Speaker 1 (00:09):
This legislation cannot bring back our daughters, but it is
the beginning of change that must occur so this tragedy
never happens again.

Speaker 2 (00:19):
That's the voice of C. C.

Speaker 3 (00:21):
Williams, her daughter killed among those that camp Mystic, who
were swept away in the horrible Texas floods that people
are still talking about and for good reason, pleading for change. Hey, everybody,
kat Dealina here on Atan the trancuitary.

Speaker 2 (00:37):
Board of talk radio. She wasn't the only one.

Speaker 3 (00:40):
We're going to let you hear from one of the
fathers of a daughter who was lost as well. When
the floodwaters roared in the direction of those poor little
girls at that camp. They weren't the only ones to
lose their lives. We all saw the tragedy in the
Texas foothills. But here's more C. C. Williams talking before

(01:03):
the Texas State Legislature about the reasons there really needs
to be change.

Speaker 1 (01:09):
My daughter was stolen from us. Seal's life ended not
because of an unavoidable act of nature, but because of
preventable failures. On just her fifth day of camp, the
beginning of what should have been a magical first summer,

(01:33):
our Seal was swept away along with other bright, beautiful girls.
She was stolen from her family, from her future, from
the world she lit up with her independence and spunk.

Speaker 3 (01:51):
Remember it was seventy one adults and thirty seven children.

Speaker 2 (01:55):
Michael McCown also lost his daughter.

Speaker 3 (01:58):
Here he shares his thought before the Texas Legislature.

Speaker 4 (02:03):
The camp had a heightened duty of care and they
fail to perform. That failure costs twenty five campers and
two young counselors their lives. No one had to die
that day. We did not send Lenny to a warzone.
We send her to camp. We trust that she would
be safe. No parents should ever again face what we
are living through now.

Speaker 3 (02:23):
Yeah, absolutely hell on Earth, and there will be changes.
I'm certain in Kirk County they've talked about it, even
from the point of view of having sirens and having
other warning systems to make sure that there are more
ways to reach people when a catastrophe like that one happens.
Hopefully never again avoiding the catastrophe of hurricanes. That's how

(02:47):
a lot of people feel that live in hurricane territory.
Just talk to the people in North Carolina. You can
hear that wind and rain That's what it was like,
especially when it comes to what's gone on with water,
and because in North Carolina that's really what we're talking about.
We're talking about all of a sudden, watching the outer

(03:10):
banks just deteriorating the conditions and so much of that
water that is washing in between homes. How many will
be lost outer Banks people have been asked to evacuate
along with visitors, so the people who live there and
those that are just vacationing tropical storm warning at this point,

(03:32):
the forecast is the heavy rain and the rough winds.
That's what they're getting hit with. On Wednesday night, I
looked at some drone footage the storm surge that hit
those homes in the outer Banks, A lot of them
was just shocking, I guess because you saw the buildings
were like at Cape Hatteras, for example, a famous hotel,

(03:53):
it's practically washing up the steps. And these are homes
that are on stilts. They're on stilts for a reason
to try to survive getting battered. Some of those hotels
won't make it. A lot of them won't make it
because they're collapsing into the weight of the water. And
of course there's the dangerous rip currents, so scary to

(04:16):
see that. In fact, coming up a little bit later
on the show, we've got more on what to do
if you're caught in that situation with and hopefully you
never find yourself in that situation where you're stuck in
a rip current, because I think too often what happens

(04:36):
is people don't understand what it means, they don't understand
that they're looking at it, they're stuck in it, They panic,
and then it leads to drowning, drowning of people who
even try to swim out and help their loved ones
who are gasping for air. So in North Carolina it
is coastal flooding. It is massive waves, waves rather strong winds,

(04:57):
and that storm surge that I've been talking about, and
they're just coming off of a high tide. So some
of the flooding issues could subside a bit when you
get to that low tide, which is starting to come
about now as that leaves my lips. I've looked at
the tide table. So the good news is that par

(05:18):
portion of it it will persist, however, with the waves,
but it'll draw back just a little bit. The next
high tide is around on the East coast is around
six forty five, depending on the location, and so they'll
start to feel more of those coastal impacts too as well. Epstein, Epstein,

(05:40):
Epstein boy constantly, that is what we hear, right, what's
going to happen to the Epstein file?

Speaker 2 (05:46):
Is it going to be released?

Speaker 3 (05:47):
And there is no new news to really report when
it comes to Epstein, except for the fact that a
judge rejected the request to release Jeffrey Epstein's Grand jelry
doc documents, saying there's no news, there's nothing there there,
it's already been reported. Not going to unseal grand jury

(06:08):
transcripts and exhibits from that investigation. Judge Berman said that
the Justice Department didn't overcome long standing president to keep
the material sealed, and said that the information contained in
the sealed materials is nothing as small relative to the
entire investigation file already in the Department of Justice's hands.

(06:31):
The Justice Department declined to comment on Berman's ruling. This
is the third federal judge to decline to release Epstein
related transcripts and evidence from the grand jury. So that's
where we're at right now, which means nothing new, nothing
new when it comes to Epstein, Epstein, Epstein, Wow, Texas redistricting,

(06:54):
there is something new there. The House passed a friendly
Geo congressional map because that was what the Democrats were
fighting right But after a day long of debate, the
House of Representatives did hit the gavel after the vote,
and it was in the favor that five districts would

(07:16):
flip read by merging Democratic seats in Houston, Austin, and
the Dallas Fort Worth areas to form new Republican leaning seats,
and by making two Rio Grande Valley districts currently held
by Dems more competitive. So this vote comes weeks after
the Democrats said that this was unorthodox to do this

(07:38):
mid decade and it was blatant gerrymandering to increase the
number of Republican congressional seats. Because of that, there is
a war going on with some other states like California
saying Okay, we're going to redistrict and I think that we're.

Speaker 2 (07:54):
Going to see this every week.

Speaker 3 (07:56):
There's going to be some other Domino if this really happens,
that's going to drop in a different direction, meaning that
what we'll see is besides California, there'll be somebody else
that will join the party, and.

Speaker 2 (08:10):
It's going to go on and on and on.

Speaker 3 (08:13):
So flip a coin when it gets to the mid terms,
if it is about looking at okay, we're going to
look at what traditionally we think is going to happen here.
It's going to be a long night from the people
who try to forecast where the votes are going. And
I think it is it is like what I call
the magic eight ball. It's going to be shake again,

(08:35):
shake and ask again later, ask again later, because it's
very very unclear at this point coming up. What do
you do when you're caught in a riptide and nail
the score? When's it coming back? Odd ends? That's what

(09:07):
we like to call this seg here on the show.
So as we dive in at the top riptides, riptimes,
rip tides. You know, we've seen too many people die
in New Jersey. A couple of people died recently on
the cruise ship. We saw what happened Carnival where there
was a guy that died snorkeling and a woman who
died while she was swimming in a pool on a

(09:30):
day where people were off the ship on excursions. So
what does riptide mean, and what do you do if
you're caught up in it. I happen to catch this
on Fox when I was flipping all.

Speaker 2 (09:43):
Over the place. I thought was a great segment.

Speaker 3 (09:45):
Wyatt Wymouth, who is with the American Lifeguard Association, talked
about what do you do if you do find yourself
in this situation, If.

Speaker 5 (09:55):
You are caught in a rip current, you got to
remember rip relax and I our for relaxed, I for
indicate help and let someone knows. Someone might have a
flotation device available like what we have behind us that
they can get out to help you and p maybe
swim parallel to get out of danger. With all those
things combined, if you do a little research and prepare

(10:16):
to go to that open water environment, that pool, or
even that resort, it's going to be a much safer day,
all right.

Speaker 2 (10:23):
I like that if you are prepared.

Speaker 3 (10:25):
I think it's easy to say it though, and I
think what happens is in the moment the shock hits
you and the idea that you're supposed to be parallel,
you have to remember that. Okay, go parallel if you
have to, So you might go out a little bit further,
but then Once you do that, you're able to come
back in and planting that in your head when you're

(10:45):
just waving around. Even if you do know how to swim,
that's the key. The key is knowing, Okay, if this
particular thing like he does, say, be prepared, if this
particular scenario happens to me.

Speaker 2 (11:00):
I have to be able.

Speaker 3 (11:02):
To do that and be calm and be able to
move down the beach. I feel like I'm constantly talking
about riptides on this show, but so many sad things
are happening. It's really been sad to see in the
last two months when I've cracked open this mic. It
seems like I'm always talking about some sad story where

(11:24):
people are caught up in a riptide where children are swimming,
and then a father swims out to try to save
the kids and ends up drowning and one of the
kids ends up drowning.

Speaker 2 (11:34):
That happened close to.

Speaker 3 (11:35):
Me, and you think, wow, if you're going to try
to survive that, it is that idea that you have
to be able to float to go to swim parallel
if it is however bad, the rip current is, however bad,
that tide takes you, because then you have a much
better chance to survival. The other thing is if you're

(11:58):
in an area where and the weather, they are telling
you look out for the riptides. First of all, a
lot of times now they're not gonna let you in
the water, but go someplace where there's lifeguards. There are
beaches that don't have lifeguards. If you're in an area
where they have lifeguards, your chances of surviving that are

(12:18):
much better. It's not one hundred percent, but the odds
are much more stacked in your favor because they're there
looking out, watching seeing the tides, pulling people back in
or rushing out with equipment to be able to grab
whoever it is.

Speaker 2 (12:35):
That's caught up in it.

Speaker 3 (12:37):
And the success rate is like ninety nine point one percent.

Speaker 2 (12:42):
I was looking up some.

Speaker 3 (12:43):
Statistics, so I'll take those statistics rather that.

Speaker 2 (12:47):
I think is the way to go.

Speaker 3 (12:49):
All right, I gotta announce this, so nail the score
is coming up again. It's this contest that we do
every week on the show during NFL season where you
get a chance to nail the score.

Speaker 2 (13:05):
Of a game of the week. Right, So.

Speaker 3 (13:10):
The first game that we have, I'm just I'm just
gonna spell it out We're gonna just give this one
to you, so you have plenty of time to look
up and decide which direction you want to go in.

Speaker 2 (13:22):
It's on.

Speaker 3 (13:24):
It's the first game of the year. It's the Eagles
and the Cowboys, and it's on Thursday, September fourth. You
have until Monday, September one to get your guesses in.
So who do you think is going to.

Speaker 2 (13:37):
Win the game?

Speaker 3 (13:37):
This is our first game of the season, the Eagles
or the Cowboys. You could win some incredible prizes and
bragging rights if you nail the score. You just have
to leave your guests this time around, So no live
calls because when you give people the chance here since
it's Labor Day weekend wrapped around that eight one three

(13:58):
four one three fifty two two thirty nine eight one
three four one three two two thirty nine, leave your
guests Eagles or the Cowboys. We'll keep reminding of you this.

Speaker 2 (14:09):
So I say, go go Eagles.

Speaker 6 (14:10):
Right, yess.

Speaker 3 (14:47):
God, yeah, it could be the Cowboys, right, who knows,
we'll see. Just because the Eagles won the Super Bowl
and this is their first meeting of the year out
of the gate with the Dallas Cowboys, it doesn't mean
that things are gonna automatically go their way. The game
is in Philadelphia, so once again, just for this first one,

(15:11):
we're not gonna do live calls. We're gonna give you
a chance to call in. So that's what a couple
of weeks basically to do that. At eight one three, four,
one three fifty two thirty nine Eagles and Cowboys. One
of the gifts is a gift certificate to a really
great place to eat. So maybe somebody nails the score
on our first one out of the gate. Like I said,

(15:33):
all right, ripoffs and ruses. So ripoffs include this crazy story,
but not so crazy about La Fitness. You know what's
so annoying when you decide I am a gym person,
I'm gonna pay whatever it is a monthly to go
to a gym and get in shape. I'm gonna just go,

(15:56):
I know it, and you know having people say that,
and unfortunately what happens is you sign up and you're
all excited, and then you find that you can't cancel
your fitness membership. It's like they're pirates.

Speaker 2 (16:14):
That's from the opencies. Yes exactly.

Speaker 3 (16:19):
It's crazy because they have clauses all over the things.
That you sign and it just automatically pushes it into
whatever the next month is, and trying to cancel it
by phone calls and whatever you think you normally could do,
you can't do. So the Federal Trade Commission is suing
the operators of La Fitness over allegations that they make

(16:42):
it exceedingly difficult for anybody to cancel the gym memberships
that they signed up for and other services offered in
their clubs, like there's like seven hundred of them nationwide.
And by doing this, I think it's a really good
thing because maybe others will look at these policies. And
I know that that's happened to my husband and I

(17:02):
was in La Fitness, it was a different one, but
they operate other clubs to La Fitness, and you got
like three point seven million members something like that nationwide.
And they specifically pointed to the FTC just unfair and
unlawful cancelation processes that they have used for years in

(17:23):
person cancelation or cancelation by mail. So that's what they say.
You call up and you just want to cancel it.
Where where can I go online? No, you must come
into the gym and cancel it. That way, or you
have to cancel by mail. You have to print out
this form on the gym's website, log in with the
credentials that some people don't even have or remember, and

(17:44):
that's the problem. So I think it's good because it
is a whoever came up with it, it was brilliant
for them to make a lot of money because it's
so hard to do it, and it should be an
easy thing to do to get rid of an unwanted subscription.

Speaker 2 (18:00):
Just like that, get rid of it. And I think people.

Speaker 3 (18:04):
More than any other thing you sign up for, I
think the gym thing is what catches people a lot
because they get all revved up in the beginning of
the year and I get it, and then they find
that all of a sudden they can't get out of
what it was that they signed and have to go

(18:27):
in person, which is crazy, or have to send something
my mail, like I said, And it.

Speaker 2 (18:33):
Leads to.

Speaker 3 (18:35):
A lot of money being pulled out of people's bank accounts.
And maybe this will help when it comes to other
things that are happening to people too as well. Hey,
coming up on the show, you're going to like this.
We're going to talk about back to school. You know,
when you're a kid and you think about back to school.
I loved it when we went to get school supplies.
You got a lunch box, you got a backpack, you

(18:59):
were able to to get new.

Speaker 2 (19:02):
Pens, big pens.

Speaker 7 (19:04):
I know.

Speaker 3 (19:05):
Joe Am Butler is going to talk about pigpens that
you can get for back to school and some of
the deals that are out there.

Speaker 2 (19:12):
We got a short seg.

Speaker 3 (19:13):
Coming up with her, and then after that we'll catch
you up on the world of the supports seven seconds,
seven million dollars riding a bull.

Speaker 2 (19:22):
That sounds good to me.

Speaker 7 (19:23):
Hang with us.

Speaker 2 (19:43):
Well, don't we all know it?

Speaker 3 (19:44):
It's back to school time and we have our favorite
here with us, Lifestyle Editor Supreme, Joe am Butler.

Speaker 2 (19:51):
She joins us some things.

Speaker 3 (19:53):
You need and need to know about right now. Joe,
welcome to the show.

Speaker 8 (19:59):
Kay, thanks for having me.

Speaker 3 (20:00):
Good to be with you.

Speaker 2 (20:01):
So where do we start.

Speaker 3 (20:02):
What's a back to school staple that we absolutely have
to have?

Speaker 8 (20:06):
Well, everyone's most beloved, you bick. What is back to
school staple? A big pen? Everyone knows the right pen
makes everything better, especially school work. Right, So we love
the big four color. You know that iconic pen. Do
you remember that one that lets you switch between blue right?

Speaker 3 (20:26):
Yes?

Speaker 8 (20:26):
I love this one and this is great for color
coding and highlighting and organizing. And it comes in shiny
and pastel too, with matching inks. So you got to
have the good pen because it's so important to you know,
boost creativity and just gets the kids into everything. So
the pen is so important. My favor is the Jelosity

(20:47):
quick dry it right, super smooth. And if you see
this one around, Kate, you better hide it because I'm
gonna steal it.

Speaker 2 (20:52):
Ah, I love it. I love it.

Speaker 8 (20:54):
It kind of reminds me of a gel manicure. It
comes in all these great colors and just great. They
have mechanical pencils too that won't break. So Bick is
just the money. It's a vibe, as my kids say,
just reliable, great stuff. So you got to get your
hands on some bic and you can find it everywhere,
you know, online or in store.

Speaker 3 (21:13):
Nice and I know you have more.

Speaker 8 (21:16):
I do want to tell you something cool that Planet
Fitness is doing. You know them, They're known, you know
for their affordable, high value fitness experience. Well, they're doing
something really cool for their members they're letting them save
money not only in fitness, but on really great brands
during back to school season. They call it Perks Fest,
so till August twenty ninth, members get exclusive deals from

(21:39):
the most amazing brands like Hello Fresh and Factor which
are great meal delivery services, Headspace which is an amazing
app for meditation and sleep, and No Bowl which has
great fitness gear, and Apple Music and Verizon, so just
really great stuff. And you know, of course they have
perks through their app all year round. Two actually, and

(22:02):
they've saved their members like more than six million dollars
this year alone, so they're really on a mission to
help you save money and help you stay well. There
are more than twenty seven Planet Fitness clubs across the country.
It's easy to join right online at Planet fitness dot com,
so definitely check them out. If you haven't, get your
kiddos to check it out because it's so important.

Speaker 3 (22:23):
Yes, to get moving. Do you have any other tips
or advice for getting us back into the school swing?

Speaker 8 (22:30):
I do if you haven't started yet, Start adjusting your
sleep routine, you know, get them to bed a little
earlier so they can get up easier. Have your outfits
laid out the night before. My son takes a shower
and wears his to bed and then just wakes up
in it and he's good to go. And you know,
get organized, do whatever you can to get organized and

(22:51):
be ready. That'll just help you mentally and physically. You know,
when you're physically organized, you're mentally organized as well, and
that helps you stay positive and focused.

Speaker 3 (23:00):
Boy, that is so true. Great tips, great stuff. Thank
you as always, Joann Bummer.

Speaker 8 (23:05):
Oh thanks for having me, Kate.

Speaker 2 (23:09):
I bet think she had a big pen.

Speaker 3 (23:10):
When you talk about Micah Parsons and Cherry Jones to
sign a new contract, the whole idea of doing.

Speaker 2 (23:19):
The uh opt in but opt out.

Speaker 3 (23:24):
Maneuver, which is now what everybody does, so they they're
not far from the camp, but they're not participating. That's
still the situation that Micah Parsons is in. We're going
to talk about that in a second. But I happened
to unearth this really interesting story. I was thinking about
deals and how much people get paid in sports, and
there's a really great bull rider, JB.

Speaker 7 (23:46):
Mooney.

Speaker 3 (23:46):
You might have heard of him if you're into the
sport at all, and he wrote a thousand bulls in
his career, making seven million dollars.

Speaker 2 (23:57):
Here's one of his famous rides.

Speaker 7 (24:00):
It's going to help him.

Speaker 2 (24:00):
Make a bull want to go to the laft. I
think we've got a new round leader.

Speaker 1 (24:20):
William J. D.

Speaker 7 (24:21):
Moody is mad. He makes the bulls pay. We done.

Speaker 2 (24:29):
What's the sacrificial lamb in round number four ninety in
a parties? Yeah, and that was just a few years ago.

Speaker 3 (24:38):
He was a professional bull rider's first seven million dollar
rider and two time world champ. He is considered to
be one of the greatest in the bull riding scene.
I remember seeing him in Vegas eighteen years in a
profession of riding bulls.

Speaker 2 (24:53):
Can you imagine that? And it was just a couple
of years ago.

Speaker 3 (24:56):
In September of twenty twenty three, he got knocked off
a bull, bucked off a bull named Arctic Assassin and
broke his neck. But here's what he's doing now, he's
his mentality. That whole winning fever that he had, he
brought it to Oklahoma. And how did he bring it
to Oklahoma? He's the coach of the Oklahoma Wildcatters, one

(25:19):
of the professional bull rider's newest additions. So just a
couple of years after retiring from bull riding at the
tender age of thirty something, he is now training others
and anybody that gets trained by him, they're pretty lucky.
The riders have to get the bull ready in a
minute or they're disqualified. You got thirty seconds. Boom, the

(25:41):
countdown goes, and then you're off, And can you hang
on for seven seconds?

Speaker 2 (25:46):
Eight seconds, nine seconds? It's crazy.

Speaker 3 (25:50):
I got introduced to bull riding when I lived in
the Great State of Texas, and I never looked back.
It's such a fun sport to go and see, I
think in person. It reminds me the two sports I
think when you see in person, you have a different
feeling if you don't know them. And one is bull riding,
and they're completely different than the other. One is to

(26:10):
go see an NHL game. If you say I'm not
a hockey fan, if you actually go and watch it,
you get much more turned into it, that's for sure,
because you can follow along. I think so the contract
dispute in Dallas. You have Jerry Jones, who's now being
featured heavily, of course, in this new Cowboys series that's

(26:30):
on Netflix. That people are eating up because either people
love to hate the Cowboys they or love to love
the Cowboys. But I think Cowboy fans are incredibly frustrated
with the situation that they're in the last couple of years,
a couple of years, a couple of decades. So the
Cowboys coach Schottenheimer is confident that the Cowboys are going

(26:54):
to have Micah Parsons for the opener, although they don't
seem to be any closer to a con tracked extension
than they were at the start of training camp. But
Brian Schottenheimer has said in the interviews that he's done.
He's going to be available for the game that we
say is our first game for Nail to score ahead
of me picking one. This is the game of the week,
the kicker the start against Philadelphia in Philly.

Speaker 2 (27:19):
Will he be there in what is it.

Speaker 3 (27:23):
Fourteen days or is it still going to be this
conversation about that he's not there. He hasn't participated in
a training camp practice in Oxnard, California when they were there,
or the past couple of days at the Star in Frisco.

Speaker 2 (27:38):
He's been part of the walkthroughs.

Speaker 3 (27:40):
And team meetings, and he did say he was dealing
with back tightness and he got treatment for that, of course,
but they have not had discussions on a new deal.
He's set to make more than twenty one million this
season on the fifth year option of his rookie deal.
This week and once the fifty three man roster is finalized,

(28:01):
the Cowboys have scheduled just a handful of practices to
focus only on the Eagles.

Speaker 2 (28:07):
So when does he need to practice?

Speaker 3 (28:10):
And what most will say is, well, he takes great
care of his body, but that's not the same thing
at all, getting reps and being with the team. There's
a very very very big, big, big big difference to
doing to doing that versus watching and being in the

(28:31):
meetings and whatnot. Theyre already u is a three game
suspension DeMarcus Robinson in the Sports Shorts suspended. According to
Kyle Shanahan, the coach, why was the forty nine er suspended?

Speaker 2 (28:48):
It's interesting, you.

Speaker 3 (28:49):
Know, they signed him in March and they knew that
that was going to happen, but we sort of forgot
about it, and there was the announcement that yep, it's
going to be the first three games that he misses.
His nickname, of course, d rod they're not going to
have them. They are thinking, Okay, we'll appeal it, but

(29:10):
we're planning for the fact that he won't be there.
Kansas City and San Francisco are going to swap their
twenty twenty seven late round picks as part of a deal,
by the way, because they're trading for Kansas City chiefs
wide out sky Moore. That was a big story during
the day and part of what's gone on with Robinson

(29:33):
as he was arrested in November in LA while he
was still a member of the Rams, pled no contest
to a misdemeanor dui. In early July, when the Niners
signed him to that two year, nine point five million
dollar contract in free agency, they knew that he would
probably have to sit out for violating the NFL's personal

(29:53):
conduct policy. So this is just the reality of that,
even with the appeal. So he's not going to be
there for the opener at Seattle. Week two is the
New Orleans Saints and Week three is the home opener
against the Arizona Cardinals, so that means it would be
Jacksonville when he would return.

Speaker 2 (30:14):
But it is a blow to their receiver corps.

Speaker 3 (30:17):
In San Francisco talking about the near missus that they've
had in the last couple of years and that this
was going to be the year that they were going
to be able to really turn that corner and close
the deal because they've had a couple of heartbreaks member
just a couple of years ago, losing to the losing
to the Kansas City Chiefs, and this is the year

(30:39):
they say that they feel like they can really challenge.
But of course there are thirty two teams that think
the very same thing that they're going to be there
in the end. I want to throw in a couple
of quickies for you as we fade out into your section.
When we go to the mail room and we checked
the morning bell, Philly slam the Mariners for their seventy

(31:02):
fourth win eleven two the final and that one, I
know we have a lot of disappointed card fans. The
Marlin snapped a two game skid, beating the Cardinals at
home six two, and the Yankees in ten beating the
Race for their sixty ninth win.

Speaker 2 (31:19):
Meet you on the flip. Yes, we are taking you
into these Zinger zone.

Speaker 9 (31:38):
So what is that?

Speaker 3 (31:39):
It's my attempt at humor. One liners usually sometimes I
can stretch the joke in a different direction. We had
actually we've in a couple of knock knock jokes. So
it is National Radio Day, can't you tune it in.

(32:05):
It's a time to celebrate the great medium that we're
in that you're listening to radio, radio, radio, and it
is an incredible, I think, just an incredible honor for
me to be in radio. I've told my story before
because I did radio and television and I just loved

(32:27):
the medium. To be able to talk to listeners and
be in that ecosystem and doing it across this great
country has just been honestly my privilege, my honor, and
the people that I've worked with and the fun that
I've had along the way, And I love that there
is a national day. And looking at social media, there

(32:48):
were so many people I worked with and other people
that I know across the country and they were all
posting pictures of them the first time they got behind
a mic or what was happening their station. So it's
celebrated every year to appreciate the role of radio in
communication and entertainment and education and talk about stations and

(33:10):
broadcasters and fup up bah bah Bah and I didn't
realize this, but it actually was established in twenty eleven
by Alice Singleton, who was a radio enthusiast. So good
for her for doing that, because it took off and
people posted the images and other people chimed in.

Speaker 2 (33:34):
And I think it's a good thing.

Speaker 3 (33:36):
And I want to shout out to all the affiliates
for carrying my show and all of you the listeners,
for supporting me throughout the years, especially here on America Tonight,
which I now have done shockingly for more than sixteen years. Wow,
it time flies. I have no idea where the time
has gone, but it has, all right. So the focus

(34:00):
is in honor of National Radio Day. The focus is radio,
of course. Imagine trying to make jokes about radio or
connected to radio. What do you call a group of
radios a soundboard? Oh, don't worry, they'll get worse. Why

(34:23):
did the radio go to school because it wanted to
increase its frequency of knowledge?

Speaker 9 (34:31):
Oh?

Speaker 10 (34:31):
Come on?

Speaker 3 (34:32):
Why don't radios make good detectives because they always broadcast
their findings?

Speaker 2 (34:41):
Exactly? All right?

Speaker 3 (34:43):
What's a radio's favorite type of music? Anything with a
good reception? Oh? Come on, you just proved my point
at the beginning of this when rying to tune.

Speaker 2 (35:00):
In the radio, right, I can't tune it in. I
can't do it. What happened to it? Okay, let me
give you some more. I have more radio jokes than
they like. I said. They they get they get worse.

Speaker 3 (35:20):
Why Why was the radio cold at the picnic because
it left its windows open? What's the radio's favorite type
of math? Frequency distribution? Why the radio break up with

(35:46):
its antenna? You can all steal this. It said they
were on different wavelengths. How do radio say goodbye? Tune
in next time? Why do radios never get lost? They

(36:11):
always stay on track. Here's another static one. Why did
the radio go to therapy? Come on, you all know
this punchline? It had too much static in its life.

(36:34):
Why was the radio always happy because it had a
lot of trouble?

Speaker 2 (36:44):
Exactly?

Speaker 5 (36:46):
All right?

Speaker 2 (36:47):
Here are a couple of good ones. Here's a couple
of good ones, I swear.

Speaker 3 (36:50):
Why he did the radio get an award for outstanding reception?
Why'd the radio go to the gym to boost its frequency?

(37:12):
What's the radio's favorite game? Catch the frequency?

Speaker 7 (37:23):
All right?

Speaker 3 (37:24):
Why was the radio always stressed because it couldn't turn
off its thoughts. Why was the radio a good boxer?

Speaker 2 (37:37):
It knew when to throw in the towel and here
we go. Oh if we only had a drum roll.
This is the last joke. Ah, a miracle. I called
for it here it is.

Speaker 3 (37:53):
Why do radios make good comedians? Because they know how
to crackle you up? Yes, thank you very much, Thank
you very much. She can tip me later. Yeah, it's
the worst, right when you can't get the reception. I

(38:16):
like to when we drive, I always listen to if
it's a cross country drive, which has been a long
time since I've done that, but I always listen to
the stations as we're driving. And there's just certain areas
that you you get that crackle where you lose stations
and then they pop back up because now there's so

(38:36):
many other things that you can plug in when you
when you're in that when you find yourself in that situation.

Speaker 2 (38:42):
But I think it's I think it's cool.

Speaker 3 (38:45):
There's something about the flavor of radio, both national and local.
And so once again, thanks to everybody who has supported
us on this show. All Right, as I said, coming up,
we have Author's Corner plus a conversation next with King
of Phillips, and she's going to talk about speaking of

(39:08):
reception and communication.

Speaker 2 (39:09):
She's going to talk about what happens. I mean, this
woman is a.

Speaker 3 (39:13):
Wild adventurer of the places that she's been. What happens
when you can't get sell service? You know, what happens
when you're in areas where you're hiking and you're lost
and you have an emergency and you're out of luck.
There is a solution. There are a couple of great solutions.

(39:33):
She even had a situation where her dog had to
be rescued. But we're going to talk to her coming
up here in a few minutes. But before we get there,
you know, there's a question in the mail bag about Hey,
I talked about vegetables and the fact that on the
show that vegetables had gone up and you can see
it when you go to the store and shot up

(39:55):
thirty eight percent is what the US Bureau of Labor
Statistics said the other day, and that was the price
of the wholesale price of vegetables in July, So the
biggest spike for a product in that category month to month.

Speaker 2 (40:10):
And that's why I.

Speaker 3 (40:11):
Think you're going to see more people that are going
to grow their own vegetables if they can, if they
have the soiler, they can create that situation. Now there's
it can be easy if you have the right climate
to grow tomatoes or peppers, or even even if if
you know there's people listening to us in places where corn,

(40:32):
you could easily do corn. I have neighbors that have
vegetable gardens, and I'm fortunate because they'll bring stuff over
to me because they'll get so much they don't want
them to go bad. And I always say to myself, Oh, that's.

Speaker 2 (40:46):
What I should be doing. Have a vegetable garden. That'd
be perfect.

Speaker 3 (40:51):
But if you look at that thirty eight percent, Wow,
it's like a fifty percent increase.

Speaker 2 (40:57):
It's crazy. That's so hot.

Speaker 3 (41:00):
I mean you have to go way back to see
any kind of a spike like that. And fresh fruits
it's kind of different. I haven't noticed anything that's different
with fresh fruit, So I look that up to think,
Am I crazy that I'm getting fruit? And I don't
even bat and I when it comes to bananas or

(41:20):
apples or kiwi or any of that stuff. But wholesale
prices of fruit is actually down. It was down six
percent in July. So it's it's just the vegetables that
have shot up so so much. All right, don't forget
about nail the score again. You got a couple of

(41:42):
weeks to get in your guess Eagles or the cowboys?

Speaker 2 (41:46):
Who wins? And what is the score. If you correctly
nail the score, you win some incredible prizes.

Speaker 3 (41:52):
It's wide open eight one three, four, one three, fifty
two thirty nine. Meet you on the flip.

Speaker 2 (42:08):
On the show office corner.

Speaker 7 (42:11):
She asked about the books they wrote. She is a
few the authors on the folks they wrote.

Speaker 3 (42:21):
I'm incredibly thrilled to bring you. P j ellis here
on author's corner this time around. She's written a book
called After You, My Dear, I Will Always follow You,
And it's so intriguing in it rapture up. It's one
of those kind of novels that it grabs you right
from the beginning and you really this is how I

(42:41):
read it. I couldn't put it down. I had the
Kindle version and I almost missed a flight and I
am so not making that up.

Speaker 2 (42:48):
So it's a big creditor.

Speaker 3 (42:50):
P J Ellis, So, PJ tell us about the book,
tell us about what made you write this?

Speaker 2 (42:58):
How'd you come up with this? You know, it's a
fascinating read.

Speaker 9 (43:03):
Well, I am what you call a panther in the
writing world, which means that I write by the seat
of my pants. So you know, when I sit down,
the curtains draw across the stage and I'm ready to
meet my characters.

Speaker 10 (43:22):
So writing is something I've always wanted to do. I
guess I've.

Speaker 9 (43:27):
Always been writing in my head but never had the
time to put it on the paper. So I'm retired
now and I have that time, and I'm really enjoying it. Hmmm.

Speaker 3 (43:39):
And the premise for this, you know Selena Morell, the
very famous fashion model, and she marries, of course, a
young and wealthy, charming, fabulous guy, and it doesn't necessarily
work out right, So tell us more about the premise
of the novel.

Speaker 10 (43:58):
Well, the cracks start to show in.

Speaker 9 (44:02):
The the husband veneer after they're married.

Speaker 10 (44:06):
They married young, and you know, Selena has made.

Speaker 9 (44:12):
A regrettable choice, and the book is about her her
bid for independence because this guy is not going to
give up.

Speaker 10 (44:22):
He is stalking her.

Speaker 9 (44:24):
He finds out where he where she lives, and destroys
her her apartments and so Finally, she she makes a
bid for independence and moves to a small town in Georgia,
which coincidentally is where I'm from. And she builds a

(44:45):
house and she has a new career in a bank and.

Speaker 5 (44:51):
There there she is.

Speaker 9 (44:53):
But Victor is still not giving up, and strange things
start to happen in her life. There are lots of
there's lots of action. There are murders, there are kidnappings.
So we have to we have to see whether whether

(45:15):
Selena can find the courage to to break free from
her past.

Speaker 3 (45:20):
Yeah, so you take us in those directions, Like you said,
you're a pantherer and it comes to you and you know,
you use they say, you write about a little bit
about what you know, So talking about being in this
small town and your town is Andersonville, Georgia, and that's
kind of like her refuge, right.

Speaker 9 (45:37):
That's correct. So she's determined to stop running. She she
has settled down and she's you know, determined not to
take it anymore. So, yes, she's living in Andrew Andersonville,
which is infamous as a prisoner of war UH camp in.

Speaker 10 (46:01):
The Civil War.

Speaker 9 (46:03):
So you know, while she is not in dire straits
like that, it's still you know, she is a prisoner
in time until she can get this aspect of her
life straightened out. It's always going to be chasing her.

Speaker 3 (46:21):
And it's so interesting because in your book, I think
there's some relatable elements, like women that get into marriages young,
because she meets Victor when she's just nineteen years old, gorgeous,
you know, walking a runway at.

Speaker 2 (46:36):
The time of your life. Yeah, and here she is,
you know, teen.

Speaker 3 (46:41):
Magazines and all these fashion spreads at a very very
young age and going to all these exotic locations. So
she gets swept up.

Speaker 10 (46:50):
In all of that, right, that's right, that's right.

Speaker 2 (46:53):
Yeah, and then it's.

Speaker 3 (46:54):
About breaking away that you know, that's where you've taken us.
How do you how do you find out something is
not what it seems? And then how do you break
away from that? Was it fun watching this all unfold?

Speaker 1 (47:05):
Oh?

Speaker 9 (47:06):
Absolutely, Yeah. That's my entertainment. That's that's my television, if
you will. Yeah. So yeah, I'm really excited to be
doing a sequel as well, and tell us.

Speaker 3 (47:19):
About the sequel, so we're not telling everyone everything. By
the way, you can get to this book on Amazon,
Barnes and Noble wherever great books are sold, you can
get a kindle version for a song or softback, so
easy and very entertaining instead of binging binge on this instead.
So what's the sequel? Where's that's going to take us?
Give us a little bit of that.

Speaker 9 (47:40):
Well, the ending to After You, My Dear is things
are kind of left in a toss up, and some
people don't really care for that, but nevertheless leave me
good reviews because they enjoyed the book.

Speaker 10 (47:58):
But yes, the sequel.

Speaker 9 (48:00):
Continues on Selena's journey with the detective she has met
in the first book, who is Carl, and they build
a life together, but they are still battling Selena's past. Yes,

(48:24):
so she still hasn't quite broken free and she meets
there are new characters, new stories.

Speaker 3 (48:36):
Yeah, and when people read this book, when they read
After You, My Dear, I will always follow you. And
then eventually you know the sequel, because like you said,
people want things to be tied up, so to speak,
or take us down that road, whatever the next road is.
What do you hope their their takeaway is from reading
your work?

Speaker 9 (48:59):
Well, I think that people read for two reasons, and
one is too to learn and to gain information and knowledge.

Speaker 10 (49:11):
The other is for entertainment, and this book is the latter.

Speaker 9 (49:16):
It's you know, it's strictly for entertainment, well not one
hundred percent. There are social issues that I think I
address in terms of the woman who has been caught
up in this bad relationship and doesn't realize it until

(49:37):
it's too late. You know, this is something we see
a lot of, and not strictly just women, and it
happens to men as well. The physical and emotional abuse
that she has had to endure. And there's another social
issue that I address in terms of a child that

(50:00):
she meets who is caught up in a porn ring
and Selena's efforts to break the child away from that.
But as I say, the book is, you know, mostly
for entertainment. There are a lot of twists and turns
and action, so I hope people will enjoy that, as

(50:23):
some of the reviewers I've gotten say that it's a
roller coaster ride, you know, but I really enjoyed it, And.

Speaker 3 (50:35):
Yeah, that's a sign of a good novel though, because
you take us up and down, you put us in
the tree and then pull us back out and absolutely
for you, like you said, now you have more time
to do this, but you've always been drawn to it.
So seeing your book out there in the world. You know,
so many people PJ talk about writing books or oh

(50:56):
they have a story and all that they they as
much as there are books out there, they'd never get
to it. What was that feeling like for you?

Speaker 2 (51:05):
Well, it took a long time.

Speaker 10 (51:07):
I will say that it was great. It was great
to have have finished it.

Speaker 9 (51:14):
And I would encourage people to always, you know, if
you have an idea, to write it down and you know,
get it on get it on paper and put it aside.
Return to it if you have to, but start because
the hardest part is starting, yeah, you know, and you

(51:37):
don't have to make a you know, a huge commitment,
you know, start with something small, but start.

Speaker 3 (51:46):
Yeah, I like that start. Did you think when you
went down this road that this was going to be
a romance novel and have those social issues in it
that I think people can relate to.

Speaker 9 (51:56):
No, No, I don't think I did. I was just like, I.

Speaker 10 (52:01):
Like thrillers.

Speaker 9 (52:03):
Yeah, I've always read you know, Patterson and Lee Child
and yes, Stephen King Cook authors like that, So.

Speaker 10 (52:14):
I think I want to write one.

Speaker 2 (52:18):
So maybe I can you know so? And you did
and you did?

Speaker 3 (52:24):
He wrote, it was an excellent one. I think the
roller coaster analogy is so good.

Speaker 10 (52:28):
Thank you.

Speaker 3 (52:29):
Yeah, get this book after you, my dear, I will
always follow you. Thank you for coming on.

Speaker 10 (52:34):
Oh, thank you for having me.

Speaker 3 (52:47):
Hey, it's Kate Delaney here as you get ready to
check out the sauce. If you're loving the show and
