Speaker 1 (00:00):
So last night I tweeted this, which three NBA teams
do you feel are stuck in no men's land? We
got over a thousand responses, and I'm gonna try my
very best to talk about the teams that I saw
more than any other one. But y'all know the NBA,
it is so very fast changing. Things are always always moving.
Teams that we see today July whatever, July fourteenth, twenty
(00:21):
twenty five as being in no man's land being a
team with the bleakest future, next year around the same
time we may have a whole different perspective. And if
you don't believe me, this exact question was asked over
on NBA Reddit four years ago and the number one
most upvoted thing was the Indiana Pacers. And as you know,
three years after this, they made the Conference finals, and
four years after this they made the NBA Finals. In
(00:43):
this timeframe, Sabonas still played for the team, and as
you saw, Kevin Pritchard and the Indiana Pacers made a
couple great trades, including bringing into Avery Saliburton, and now
nobody will look at them as in no man's land
after being in the NBA Finals. Another example, same posts
Houston is up there. The Rockets trade and most of
their assets to building my Harden than trading Harden for
a fraction of the assets. I could see them not
(01:03):
making the playoffs again for a decade. And as you know,
the Houston Rockas made it this year as a two seed,
and now they have Kevin Durant. Now this right here,
this quote slash, this opinion was pretty widely believed throughout basketball.
You trade one of your franchise goats and didn't get
anything in return. But again, good management, decent ownership group,
and just like that, we look at the Houston Rockets
as one of the teams that could potentially do the
(01:25):
thing this year. But maybe you're thinking that four years
ago that's too long. What about just last season? The
same exact question was asked this time around, the most
up voted thing was the Atlanta Hawks.
Speaker 2 (01:37):
The Hawks were.
Speaker 1 (01:37):
Number one, and based on the twenty twenty five offseason,
there's nobody that thinks that the Atlanta Hawk future is believed.
There's nobody that believes that they're stuck in no man's land.
With the addition of Zachary Reached, I say, first overall,
pick them traded for Porzingis, Nikia, Alexanda Walker, Jaylen Johnson blossoming,
and Trey Young still being Trey Young. That is a
really competent team that should be way out of no
man's land. The last example, one of the other top
(02:00):
voted thing was the Detroit Pistons, And as y'all know,
the Detroit Pistons just made the postseason and was really
competitive against the Knicks, and people believe that that young
Cores is good enough to could potentially take the next jump.
Speaker 2 (02:12):
So again, things are shifting. But there are a few teams.
Speaker 1 (02:19):
That were brought up a lot four years ago on
an initial right at post one year ago, and damn it,
they were brought up a ton this time around on
my post, the first one being the Chicago Bulls. Yeah, yep,
and just strolling through Chicago.
Speaker 2 (02:36):
Bulls, Bulls, Bulls, Bulls Bulls.
Speaker 1 (02:39):
I think that's what we got to start off, my
Chicago Bulls being one of the teams stuck in no
man slam, and I cannot agree more. I feel like
we've had this conversation, me and you throughout the course
of this channel's existence every year at least once, but
let's do it again.
Speaker 2 (02:53):
One thing I do appreciate.
Speaker 1 (02:55):
Is that I've seen a lot of clips over the
last week of people that have bigger voices in NBA
media having conversations about the Bulls, whether it be Bill
Simmons talking about the ownership group or Zach Lowe who's
back to podcasts and him talking about the Bulls and
not that any of it matters. Hell, I've been making
hit pieces about the Bulls for a decade now and
nothing has ever really changed. But it is great to
(03:15):
see other people noticing that, Hey, the Bulls are one
of the biggest markets in basketball, and nobody cares about
winning other than the fans. And as Bulls fans were
always trying to grasp for the thing that can save us,
where I was trying to grasp for the thing to
make us excited again. Right, Monus Buzzella Chicago's very own.
I mean before the twenty twenty four to twenty twenty
five seas or twenty twenty three twenty twenty four season,
(03:36):
Modus Buzzelli's was looked at as the top pick in
the draft. He has a terrible year in G League
and he falls all the way to us at number eleven.
Cool rookie season starts off pretty light, and then he.
Speaker 2 (03:45):
Starts to be in the starting lineup.
Speaker 1 (03:47):
Then he haves it's like fourteen points as a starter,
or he's driving, he's defending, he's doing cool stuff, and
now we're like, yeah, man him, Caleb Williams, Pete Crow, Armstrong,
Connor Bodar, I guess Coachon Montgomery.
Speaker 2 (04:02):
For the White Sox.
Speaker 1 (04:04):
These guys have to save our franchises. And that's just
unrealistic expectations for the kid. I ain't gonna lie to you.
I got all the love of the world from out
as bizealous, but I don't know if he's gonna be
good enough to save the franchise, because the franchise has
to be saved from the very top, because if you
have a.
Speaker 2 (04:18):
Bad owner, there's not much you can really do.
Speaker 1 (04:22):
Bad owners hire bad gms and bad basketball operations people,
and those people go in with the idea to make
the owner happy. Some owners don't want to pay the
luxury taxt. Some owners just want to sell tickets and
guests when Chicago's always gonna sell tickets. And I think
I mean this when I say that as long as
the Ryansdore family owns the Chicago Bulls. Then Bulls fans
(04:44):
will never get that glory that they got in the nineties,
and a lot of us weren't really around to really
live through the greatness that was the Jordan era. All
we know is really disappointment. So yeah, man, it's bleak.
It always starts to own the ship. But let's even
talk about the roster construction and the people that are
making the basketball decisions, because that's where it even gets worse.
(05:07):
You have a bad owner and then you also have
a general manager that doesn't do well at valuing assets.
Then boy, you win for some trouble doash Getty as
it today, is still a free agent, which I do appreciate,
by the way. I would like to keep Josh Getty
on the team, but there's no reason to pay somebody
thirty million dollars if he doesn't have a market to
get paid thirty million dollars. I hope that the Boys
learned that lesson with Patrick Williams, who they paid early,
didn't even let him hit free agency, and now he's trapped. Well,
(05:30):
you can argue that he's always been drafted. Either way,
he hasn't been very good. Josh Giddy's game lock reads
so very interesting. Before the trade that line, he has
months where he's shooting forty percent from the field, thirty
percent from three and only averaging ten points. It was
a really, really tough stretch. And then post All Star
things started to look pretty good. After about twenty points
(05:51):
per game, eight rebounds to assists. This month he shot
fifty three percent from three. Let's be realistic. We know
that that's not realistic. Then we continue to see him
be great or for his own standard, great as a stretch,
but you know, really good for what he could potentially do.
Twenty points per game, seven or nine assists, about ten rebounds,
and you know, the shooting splits are better than what
(06:11):
they've ever really been, and he closes out the season
really good. And there's basically amongst Bulls fandom there's a
couple of different perspectives on Josh Gitty. Perspective. A from
some fans says, hey, man, there's no coincidence that once
we traded away some of the.
Speaker 2 (06:27):
Other ball handlers, the zach Lavine's and.
Speaker 1 (06:30):
So on and so forth, that Josh Gitty, when he
had the ball in his hands, he put up these stats,
and the Bulls were really competent and at least fun.
So what he did and the second half of the
season is probably a better indication of him really progressing
because we gave him the keys, if you will. The
other side of Bulls fandom is like, hey man, March
basketball doesn't really exist. We should never pay somebody based
(06:52):
on what they did in March because it.
Speaker 2 (06:54):
Doesn't really exist.
Speaker 1 (06:56):
And even if it does, even if this is Josh Gitty, right,
he's gonna average next season, let's be nineteen eight and eight.
Speaker 2 (07:03):
What is the cost of that?
Speaker 1 (07:04):
And I don't mean the financial cost of that, I
mean more of My biggest complaint with Josh Skitty as
a basketball player is that obviously the things that he's
good at, he's really good at. I got it tip
my cap to the fact that he turned himself into
at least an ok three point shooter. All of them
are off the catch. He very really took shots off
the dribble, by the way, But he you know, some
(07:25):
of the things that he really struggled at last year
in OKCE. He came to Chicago and he rounded out
some of those games. You got to get from respect
for that. But he's not so dynamic of an on
ball player to make you feel like he deserves to
have the ball all the time. But an encounter to
that is that the only way to really get Josh
Kitty to be really good is if he does have
(07:45):
the ball all the time. Right, So the best version
of him needs the ball. But that best version is
still not that amazing. So where are we at with him?
I've talked about this when we were doing like the
Draft show. There were a couple bigger point guards in
this year's draft, like a Yaeger. He pronounced it on
TV the other day, Yet Yeager Yemen something like that,
Yeger Yemmen.
Speaker 2 (08:06):
Who.
Speaker 1 (08:06):
Of course, he's a rookie, so I'm not trying to
put no pressure on him. But the reason why that
archetype is really tough to really translate to the NBN
twenty twenty five is that no matter how good of
a pass you are, or no no matter how good
of a you just overall facilitator you are, if you're
not a threat off the dribble, then it just won't
materialize anything great. Josh Getty is a phenomenal passer in
(08:29):
the half court and in the full court, but if
other teams are not respecting his jumper or he can't
shoot off the dribble, then he won't be a toppying
point guard. And at the end of the day, if
you want the ball in somebody hands as much as
Josh Getty needs the ball in his hands, you want
him to be.
Speaker 2 (08:43):
A top end player.
Speaker 1 (08:44):
Maybe he's developing at this offseason, but I can only
go on what he's doing right now this season. According
to Synergy, these are off the dribble jump shots from
Josh Getty. He shot thirty percent on those shots. Thirty percent,
and you can see all the blue in this shot
chart from the three point he shot thirty four percent
and twenty four percent in this mit rain slash close area.
(09:04):
That's just never going to be good enough as a
lead ball handled. And listen, I'm not trying to make
this all about Josh Giddy, but really what happens with
Josh Gilly as a player and his development, It's like
one of the most important things with the Chicago Bulls.
But outside of him, we still have to figure out
what's going on with Kobe White. Right so last year
of his contract. He's played so great here in Chicago,
but do you want to pay him so and so
(09:25):
amount of money, and do you trust that the front
office will pay him a good amount of money based
on his production? This front office hasn't been the best
at paying people what they're worth and also valuing an
asset for what it is. Kobe White's one of my
three favorite players in all the basketball I got no
choice but to have love for my boy CW. But
I also do recognize that, like for the future of
(09:46):
the franchise, maybe last season would have been a great
time to potentially trade him away because he had an
extra year on his contract and he was having like
a career year. And what the Bulls have done over
the last couple of seasons is basically wait until a
player was on the last year of their deal with
they hold nearly zero value, and then you trade them
away for one the one kind of deal. So it's
very grim and I got no choice but the route enough, Bulls.
(10:07):
Let's go to the next thing. I guess we can
go Bulls West with the Sacramento Kings. Hey, listen, if
there's any silver line into the Sacramento Kings going into
this season, because y'all know I'm an optimistic guy. Shout
out team enjoyed basketball. I'm an optimistic guy for every
team except for my own. Nee Clifford is a real
basketball player. I don't know exactly what that looks like.
I saw people giving j Doug comps on the timeline
Yesterdam like, yeah, this is true sumer League stuff. But
(10:28):
I do believe Nee Clifford is a real guy. But
based on all of the decisions they've made recently and
all of the rumors that we've seen around them, it
just nobody knows exactly what the hell they're trying to do.
Right from the moment they decided it's a trade for
Zach Lavine, the question.
Speaker 2 (10:44):
Was, oh, oh, okay, now what.
Speaker 1 (10:46):
And I think I did them somewhat of a disservice
when we made that video about their trade with dearon
Fox and in real time, I kind of just completely
forgot about the lever the lack of leverage that they
had when your your guy requestioned. The trade basically has
one destination, and it is to the San Antonio Spurs.
You have no choice but to kind of accept the
assets that are given to you and the player that
(11:07):
was with Zach Levine. But given the fact that Zach
Lavine and the Martin Roseen literally played together for three
seasons before that. It makes no sense to me that
even if Dan or Fox wanted to go to the
San Antonio Spurs, that.
Speaker 2 (11:18):
We would just do what the Bulls just did.
Speaker 1 (11:21):
If there's one team I never want to replicate, it's
the goddamn Bulls and the King's like, you know what,
European center, zach Lavine, zach Lavine, de Martin Rosen, a
Kobe White type of player in Malik Monk, a four
man or wing that looks good and in.
Speaker 2 (11:37):
Other games he looks terrible.
Speaker 1 (11:38):
Patrick Williams and Key Murray and granted Keigy Murray's leagues
ahead of Patrick Williams will getting wrong. But it really
turned into the sacra of the Chicago Bulls Bulls West
and now you get the rumors about them potentially trying
to pop off the Martin rose and even if that
means they traded away Malik Monk, Malik Monk at the
Detroit Pistons connection and then you got Devin.
Speaker 2 (11:57):
Carter and trade talks.
Speaker 1 (11:59):
He just look great and some of the I'm sure
they probably downe and now he just hit like a
thirty ball against the Bulls, but there's there has not
been a decision that the Kings have made over the
last year that I'm like that's the right one other
than the Clifford draft, which based on where they got him,
I think that's an absolute steal. And then you got
the fact that Demntas Sabonus, who's already extended this year,
he's forty two million dollars, next year's forty five million dollars,
and he's forty eight million dollars after that.
Speaker 2 (12:20):
I've been very open about this. I'm not the huge
to Mantsaabonus fan.
Speaker 1 (12:23):
I respect him as a player, I respect his game,
but I'm thinking about trying to be able to contender.
I just don't know how much I like de montsa
Bonus as my five man. I feel like that's is
that okay? I think that's okay, right, And I especially
don't like him if he's gonna be used as his
hub with the pieces that are around them.
Speaker 2 (12:38):
So yeah, no man's land.
Speaker 1 (12:40):
Feels like the perfect way to describe the Sacramento Kings
right now, Like I did this segment on my podcast,
but they have so much money into these players that,
like you don't even really think about, right, Zach Levine
is technically on his last year, but he's got a
player option for about fifty million. Why the hell would
he say no to that? You already talked about the
de Montsa bonus thing. The Marti Ross contract is actually
not a bad contract whatsoever. Twenty four million dollars for
(13:02):
the Martin rows and feels like a steal based on
his production. Malik Monk is extended, Dennis Shrewd that just
brought in for forty five million dollars. You gotta pay
Keith and Murray who's about to hear restrict the free agency?
Devin Carr, Like, they just have so much money tied
into certain players and it's like, where do you go
from here?
Speaker 2 (13:19):
And I just don't know the answer to that, just
don't know the answer to We got ja. I'm saying Miami, Miami,
and Miami.
Speaker 1 (13:25):
That's got one point two k likes that might be
the most like to be seeing on this post.
Speaker 2 (13:29):
So let's talk about the Miami.
Speaker 1 (13:31):
I will say I like the trade that they just
did recently, Like it doesn't put them into contention, but
getting Norman Powell for basically nothing is a win, even
if Norman Pal's year last year was unsustainable, which it
might be at the age of thirty two. He's so
much better than any of the option that you had
right there, and the fact that you gave up Kevin
Love and what slow mode. You didn't even give up
the there was a second round pick in the trade.
I thought they the ones that gave him the second
(13:52):
They didn't give the SCD round pick. So they got
a guy who just was like a borderline All Star
before he dealt with his injury, So that is a win.
You do believe that they're missing certain type of players
on the team though, like and maybe Davion Mitchell is
this guy. Maybe Kaspar Jakashonis can turn into this guy.
I don't know, but Bam just had basically his worst
season since he was a rookie, and I'm hoping that's
(14:14):
more just having a down year versus him being this player.
Like there are a lot of things and like the
analytics that I just really don't like about BAM's last season.
Speaker 2 (14:22):
The lack of getting to the.
Speaker 1 (14:23):
Ram, the more mid range jump shots, the more flow
to range jumpers, instead of him being this dog get
into the basket like he was in the first couple
years of his career, but also he just didn't really
play too much with a true point. And again, Davion
kind of shows flash of this and maybe it will
end up being him, but the Norman palat of this
and definitely don't make me feel like bam on thea
Biyo is about to get set up more. Miami's also
in his worst spot that there's been so many rumors
(14:45):
about them potentially getting Tyler Hero this big ass contract,
And something that we did on the show is like, bro,
what is your team if bam Adebayo's making more than
fifty million dollars annually and Tyler Hero is too. Both
of them are five basketball players. Hell, bam Minbajo is
a great defensive player in the offense. Again, last year
wasn't so good, but he's been good enough to give
(15:05):
you twenty and elite defense almost on a nightly basis
before last season. But that said, both of these guys
are better. It's like number twos and number threes versus
being number ones. You paying them one hundred million dollars
annually together, then where could you even go? The reason
why Miami Miami gets the benefit of the dow compared
to these other teams, because we've seen Miami be in
similar situations where you felt like, oh man, old man
(15:27):
pat Riley and lost his fastball and the boom just
like that.
Speaker 2 (15:30):
They're a good team again, right.
Speaker 1 (15:31):
The Kings and the Bulls don't get that level of
respect from us to believe that they can flip it
on the switch, while Miami kind of does. Now, some
of the things that have happened in Miami have been
like fools gold obviously not fools gold, that's the wrong word,
have been like, I don't know. I think it's kind
of tricked the front office to coach the staff to
think that they are closer than what they are. Right
when you become the eight seed and make it to
(15:52):
the NBA Finals and like you were there, right, But
there is no way in our minds as NBA fans
that we thought that that Miami he team would be
able to replicate doing some of those things. They couldn't
be a team that clas to do the regular season
and said, hey, postseason is here, especially since Jimmy not there.
Postseasons here, we could get back on their thing. And
they probably felt like they were closer to contention and
closer to a championship than what their roster showed. And
(16:15):
now that Jimmy Butler's out the door. But even that said,
I still do like a lot of the players in
their team. Like again, BAM down season, I still a
BAM fan. I think Tyler Herro is just just an
all star. He's a He's a very particular archetype that
we've seen. I mean, he's a little he's above. He's
on a different tier of some of those players. But
like this archetype of two guard, you know, you know,
(16:38):
they costplam as a one. Occasionally, these two guards score
first average to below average playmakers. Teams are kind of
just storing them dudes around right now. Nobody wants this
type of player. The Jalen Greens, the Norman Pals, the
Jordan Pools, all of these dudes just got traded this offseason,
right And Tyler Herrow again is on a different tier
to some of those dudes. But the archetype is still
(16:59):
the archetype. And if other teams are throwing this archetype away,
and we're about to give this archetype fifty million dollars
owned by Sons at three point five likes on the
on the three teams that we mentioned, Oh my god,
everybody's in the same boat.
Speaker 2 (17:12):
Talking about the Raptors did come up a decent amount,
and some of the other names. I'm gonna give them
the benefit of the doubt.
Speaker 1 (17:18):
Like Charlotte got mentioned a good amount of times, the
Wizards got mentioned a good amount of times. I'm giving
them the benefit of the doubt. Maybe they don't deserve it.
But like with the new ownership groups and the new
general managing, I kind of like some of the stuff
that the Charlotte Hornets have done. Now will that mean
that they're about to go into another rebuild within their rebuild?
Speaker 2 (17:34):
Maybe?
Speaker 1 (17:35):
But sometimes you got the flush the deck when the
previous regime just wasn't doing it the right way. What
does that mean for LaMelo Ball? I don't really know
the Washington Wizards. I also just really like a lot
of the deals they've done. They've kind of you know,
they have a ton of young players and a few
good amount of like veterans in that locker room between
Chris Middleton, Season McCallum, and Marcus Smart. They just traded
away Kelly Olennock, But I don't know how they balance
(17:57):
that rotation, by the way, but I feel more optim
missing about what the Wizards can be in the near
future versus some of these other teams. Right I think
they are rebuilding, but we have a direction for that team,
and as some of those young guys on that roster
are really intriguing to me, Like Trey Johnson's maybe my
favorite player from the twenty twenty five draft class. You
gotta be a number two, but I think that out
(18:17):
of all the young players they have on the roster,
he's the one with the upside to make you think
he can be an All Star. And there's a couple
of guys on the team with a lot of upside,
but he's the one that makes me like, I'm watching
me so smooth, so butter he plays at his own
tempo that I'm like, Man, if there's anybody on this
young team that can be an All Star one day,
Trey Johnson kind of could be that. Obviously, Alex sarr
is blocking every shot in existence. So like, I'm giving
(18:37):
them more of a benefit of the doubt than some
of these other teams because at least with their new regime,
they have a direction. They've brought in second round picks
in a first round pick that ended up being Will
Riley for just taking on bad contracts, and the next
year they're gonna have, like I don't forget the number
one hundred million dollars in cap space to do the
same thing, take on bad contracts, get first round draft capitol,
and just keep doing this until they draft the players
(18:59):
that they think are good enough to help them do
the thing. There's also another direction for them that I
don't know if many people are talking about that with
that one hundred something million, I forget the exact number
of million dollars that they might have an open cap
space next season, they may try to do the same
shit that the Houston Rockets did. Instead of using that,
like I mentioned, to bring in bass salary, they may
overpay for some like really good dudes like what frev
(19:21):
and Vliet was or Dylan Brooks ended up being. And
that's not even I didn't even think about that actually
hurt that on the podcast or shout out to I
think it might have been Robed ma Hooney, shout out
to Rob Mahoney. That was not even a thing that
I saw in my brain. So like, yeah, so that's
a possibility as well so again giving them the benefit
of doubt.
Speaker 2 (19:37):
Yeah, I'll entit there, in it there.
Speaker 1 (19:39):
I think those are the three teams that are most
in no man's land. The Suns came up a little bit, yeah,
but who else
