little personality, switching up the storyline on God. Were making
the story.

Speaker 1 (00:20):
And hooks one day at the time.

Speaker 2 (00:24):
How much problems to the side, enjoy yourself, free your mind,
chicken it ki Kee.

Speaker 1 (00:40):
Hello and welcome back to another episode of Kicking It
with Kiki, Life, love and all that other ship. I
am your host, the author Kiki Chanel, Award winning author,
lifestyle blogger, owner of nineteen Lifestyle Magazine. Today, I'm joined
with the regular of the show now right Daylor and

(01:02):
we're going to talk about some great things that he
has coming in store. We're going to talk about something
a milestone that he just had. Yes, so proud of him.
He is also one of the contributing authors of nineteen
Lifestyle Magazine. So Jayleen, telling people who you are, how
you doing, Thank you for coming to Kicking it with
me today.

Speaker 3 (01:22):
I'm doing good. I'm happy to be here. So for
those of y'all don't know me, my name's Jaylen Martin.
I've been writing ever since I've been thirteen published authors
since I've been sixteen. I recently just gained my first
best selling book on Amazon.

Speaker 1 (01:38):
Congratulations, I'm so proud of you.

Speaker 3 (01:41):
Thank you, thank you.

Speaker 2 (01:44):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (01:44):
So before we get into all things Jayleen, we're going
to talk a little bit about life and love and
all that other stuff. The last time where you were
here was a few months ago. So how has life
been life in since then?

Speaker 3 (01:56):
Life has been a whirlwind. Like ever since I Talked
to Horses has been released, I received like a lot
of positive feedback. More people are wanting to engage in
equin therapy, especially when I shared like my stories and
my reasoning behind why I started doing equin therapy to
begin with. It's something people are excited about. People feels

(02:17):
that it's definitely beneficial and it's also for free, and
it's also very healing as well. So I'm just very
happy that not only my poetry but also play like
I could play like a part and people wanting to
engage in this.

Speaker 1 (02:31):
For those who may not know what equin therapy is,
let's talk about that a little bit. Explain to the
listeners what that it actually is.

Speaker 3 (02:40):
Of course, So equin therapy is a therapeutic process that
incorporates horses. So if you've heard of goat yoga, it's
kind of like that you bond with the horse and
it's it's for free, like I've been friends with the
horse that I bond with for like over a year now.

(03:00):
Bo bo Yes real good.

Speaker 1 (03:03):
Okay, yes, absolutely when it comes to life now, because
I know you are are recovering, you know, I don't
want to call you an addict, but I guess I
don't know. I mean, just just just talk about I
don't want to I don't want to offend. I don't
want to offend you in any way.

Speaker 3 (03:23):
I'm not offended. I am recovering alcoholic and it is
one of the reasons why I've started doing equin therapy
because I had a lot of unresolved trauma back from
my college days that I was still inhaled from and
when I'm what I've mainly learned from equin therapy is

(03:43):
that not only horses, but animals can be much more
loving than people. And I believe I said this the
last time, but I'll say it again, but when horses love,
they love blindly. They don't care who you are, they
just know, they just feel the energy and they resume
that same energy back.

Speaker 1 (04:02):
Right, So, how's had journey been? Have you you know,
had any setbacks? Have you have? How's how's it been
going with your sobriety?

Speaker 3 (04:10):
Very good, I've been I've been sober for two years
and I just gained my two year sobriety tip in AA.

Speaker 1 (04:18):
Absolutely congratulations, congratulations. So let's talk about Amazon bestseller? Yes, yeah,
so how do you feel? Soaked that in? Tell the listeners,
how do you feel about that? Because you were here
promoting your book when you were here the last.

Speaker 3 (04:34):
Time, yes, the book was even released.

Speaker 1 (04:37):
Yeah, so talk about that. How did that? How did
that all happen? When you found out that you're an
Amazon bestseller? How did you feel? How do you feel?

Speaker 3 (04:45):
I'm not gonna lie, there are some days where I'm
just like, Wow, I actually have like this title. So
there's some days I'm just like, is this like really real?
Like I'm still partially waiting to wake up because I've
been writing for like years, Like this is like you've
known me for a very long time, so you know
this isn't something that happened overnight. This is year's worth

(05:07):
of hard work behind me, and just it's all about
just reaching out to like the right people and putting
yourself out there. The correct way, and eventually everything else
is gonna piece itself together.

Speaker 1 (05:25):
Absolutely, let's talk about that a little bit, especially when
it comes to life and all that other shit, because
all that other shit happens. Right Absolutely, stand the course
and not giving up, always showing up for yourself even
through the midst of adversity, because life happens and adversity
will come. But talk to someone who may be listening.
Can you tell them something encouraging that will inspire them

(05:50):
to keep pushing, keep going, keep showing up, being consistent
no matter what.

Speaker 3 (05:56):
Well to anyone out there who is listening. I mean
this is gonna sound pretty basic, but just don't give
up Like this is. I've been working hard at this
since I was thirteen years old, not giving up yet.
Although I've received that Amazon bestseller title, there's still a
whole lot of work to do. Now that I've earned

(06:16):
that title, there's still more work to do. So even
when you achieve like that goal, just don't get complacent.
Find another goal, find another dream, find something that keeps
you going. Because the more work you out onto yourself,
the more you grow. So don't slow down whatever you do,
just like keep going. Like all guys snow.

Speaker 1 (06:38):
Breaks, Oh gas, no breaks, y'all. Hear to hear from
Jalen He is talking about being an Amazon best seller.
I know a lot of people take that title and
it goes to their head. How have you stayed grounded
in the midst of being of a bestseller?

Speaker 3 (06:55):
Absolutely, I have to stay grounded because regardless if it's Amazon,
I'm Bestseller, New York Times Bestseller, Today, bestseller. At the
end of the day, I'm still a person first, Like,
I absolutely cannot forget like all the sacrifices, because I've
made a lot of sacrifices just to even get to
this point. And that's something I just can't forget about.

(07:17):
And that's something that always keeps me in mind whenever
I'm working on my next project or when I'm promoting,
I always have to I always have to remember, like
even though I'm twenty four, deep down, I'm still that
thirteen year old with a dream who would do whatever
it takes to achieve that and still would do whatever
it takes to achieve more so's it's a quote. It's

(07:40):
a quote from Black It's a quote from Black Panther.
I wanted to say and when Sury says just because
something works doesn't mean it does not need to be improved.
Quote by Princess Shuri herself.

Speaker 1 (07:52):
I love that and that's one of my favorite movies.
So yeah, because I'm a nerd, you know I love it.

Speaker 3 (07:57):
Oh yes, all.

Speaker 1 (08:00):
Right, So we're gonna talk about your upcoming spoken word
country album. Tell us about that. How you got into that?

Speaker 3 (08:07):
So I've gotten to country music like a year ago,
like right after I got out of college. I've always
been to Luke colmbs fan, but like I started going,
I start going diving deeper into like the nineties country
to country today, and it's such a magical genre. Like

(08:29):
there's son I'm still learning things about. Like there's so
much about this music that so many people do not know.
I mean, people can feel about however they feel about
Beyonce's Cowboy Carter, but I hold that album to a
very high pedestal because despite how people feel about the album,

(08:50):
it wasn't until that album that a lot of people
dive deep into the roots of country music and not
only wanted to learn more, but wanted to listen to
all of this of it. And I have so many
favorite country artists. Would be here all day, but a
lot of these poems and I talk to horses, they
read like country songs. So like, after performing so many

(09:13):
like at the local clubs and bars and Lake Charles,
that's when I decided to do like a spoken word
not only a spoken word album, but a spoken word
country album. So it's my voice not reading the poems.
Anybody could read the poems, but it's me. It's me
and my raw emotion saying the poems provided by country

(09:35):
music instrumentals by my good friend Taylor Fillion, who's a
musical artist out here in Lake Charles.

Speaker 1 (09:41):
Okay, nice, Nice? So when when are you working on
it now? Is it coming out this year or is
going to come out when you finish?

Speaker 3 (09:49):
It comes out August fifteenth to all music stream platforms.

Speaker 1 (09:57):
Listen. I love because I'm that you when you wear
a baby at a book festival, and to see how
much you've grown and overcome, overcome all of the things
that that you have gone through, graduating college, you know,
become teacher, continue to write and put out things. It's

(10:19):
just amazing that you didn't quit because some of the
stuff that you talked about in your last interview, and
I'm not gonna share that you guys, go back. It's
on the platform. You can listen to it. But it
was very hard. I could tell that you went through
a hard time, a dark time, and you're sitting here
now fulfilling your dream, smiling and looking beautiful doing so.

(10:42):
I am just so have a fan in me and
I always tell you that that I'm so proud of you.
So you continue to be an inspiration because you are
and we need more people like you in this world.
I'm emotional. So we're going to talk about your fantasy
is coming out next next year. So yes, what they
can expect, what inspired you to write it?

Speaker 3 (11:04):
And it is it.

Speaker 1 (11:07):
Alikans alagans alkans. Okay, all right, that's that up. Y'all listen,
but yeah, it's okay. Tell the people about the fantasy book,
what inspired it, and what they can expect.

Speaker 3 (11:23):
So Alakans is possibly my biggest project today. This is
the start of a multi book series. Because first met me,
I was doing a sci fi trilogy. I was wrapping
that up. So I've seen this series going to either
five to six books. It is a huge world. So

(11:44):
this idea came about like when I was at MacNeice.
So this book was in the works during the COVID
era back in twenty twenty. So I was up in
like Monroe, like just debating if I even wanted to
continue it because twenty twenty was such a crazy year,
like we were in Monroe for Hurricane Laura, and did

(12:05):
Hurricane dealt to happen? And I'm just like, I'm just
I'm just I was like, I'm just so like exhausted,
plus me dealing with the pandemic. But then summer of
twenty twenty one, I have finished the book, but I
never just up and published it. I always went back
and forth, read it, fixed it up and everything to
the point I'm just like, you know what, I have

(12:25):
a finished manuscript. What I have is what I have.
This is a multibook series. Whatever ideas I don't use
for this one, I can, I can use it for
its upcoming sequels. So Ale Can tells the story of
nineteen year old Florian Casturo from a small a fictional
small town in Louisiana, who discovers that he has magical
fire abilities after a monstrous creature called a night Lane

(12:49):
and so this causes to unearth like a certain family hit.
After learning this, that's when he goes to this other
universe called Alec and he enrolls at the magical college
called Lanacea University, which is heavily inspired by my alma mater,
Mechneese State University. There's a lot of similarities between the schools,

(13:10):
and so there that's when he joined us guild. So
in this world, guilds are a substitution for fraternities and sororities.
There's the all men, there's the all male guilds, the
all female guilds. And the guild that he'll join is
a co ed guild and it's an up and coming guild,
so there's only like five members so far, and they

(13:31):
help him find out who he is and what his
passes and how he can control his abilities. Because when
when you're like when you're a college kid with bad
anxiety and fire can come out of your hands at
any times, it's a very stressful time for this young
man's life. Basically, I'm a lover for two thousand fantasy,

(13:53):
like Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Charmed the Vampire Darist. Those
are heavily inspired when I wrote this book, and I
really hope those are the readers that I could draw
in with this.

Speaker 1 (14:06):
Oh, I'm definitely getting this book because you just named
like the top shows that I love. I always go
back and watch the Bnpire Diaries. I'm watching The Angel now.
I found it on, so I'm watching that now. Oh
my goodness. Not to mean to cut you off. You
was just that was nostalgic right there for me.

Speaker 3 (14:27):
Yeah, So I basically wanted to recapture that early two
thousands fun that it had, because I mean, there's some
good fantasy shows today, but they just don't hit the
way the early two thousands to do with like Buffy
and Charmed and Supernatural, Like it's just something like extremely

(14:49):
magical that they were able to do back then, not
only creating like these characters that are strong, but also
interwoven human themes and complexity with them, and that is
what alacans are all about.

Speaker 1 (15:04):
Oh well, I love that you were inspiring me because
I started working on like a fantasy sci fi type book. Ooh,
it had to be twenty eighteen maybe, and it's called
Childhood Friends, And so you're inspired me to go back
and see it. God, yes, it's all about it's about

(15:26):
the teens. When they turn sixteen, they developed their superpowers.
Because their parents leave and so they're now left to
try to figure out what's going on. And it's about
angels and falling from the sky. I don't want to
tell too much about it, but yeah, I'm excited. My god,
you're going to go back and finish that book.

Speaker 3 (15:46):
Yeah, you got to go back and finish that Yes.

Speaker 1 (15:51):
So I want to talk about you know, we just
talked about like the importance of finishing what you start. Like,
talk to someone who may just feel like they're not
good enough for their story, or shouldn't be out there,
or they don't know where to start. What would you
say to them.

Speaker 3 (16:05):
I actually been seeing a bunch of TikTok videos and
quotes online about this. You have to finish what you started,
whether if it's writing or music. You cannot think about
the criticism or the outcome. You have to do it
for you because when you're doing it for you, like
you're gonna come up with your best work possible. Because

(16:27):
that's how it was for me. That's why it took
so long for me to like finish Alegance, because I
was always worried about, like, oh, with the readers, like this,
will they not understand this? But I have to write
this book for me before having anyone else's eyes look
at it. So to anybody out there listening, finish what
you start, but finish for you, like worry about like

(16:49):
the outcome later, but you have to finish it for you,
and you have to be proud for that final product
because regardless of what happens, that's the legacy you're leaving behind.

Speaker 1 (17:00):
Absolutely, and you have to make sure. You have to
understand that not everybody's going to support you, not everybody
like what you have to, you know, say, not everybody's
gonna like your book. I had one lady from my
very first book. She said, I love the book, I
just didn't like the ending, so she gave me a
two star review. I thought the world had ended. You
heard me, oh my, and I'm like, wait a minute.

(17:23):
But it was a reality check and it was like
people just don't understand and that those people are not
your people. Your people will come. So keep showing up,
keep doing the work, and like Jalen said, do it
for you, do it for you first and.

Speaker 3 (17:37):
Foremost people are so relentless when it comes to discouragement.
Like long story short, I had a teacher in high
school who told me I would never publish a book,
And I published my first book when I was a
junior in high school. I was around people in college
who told me that I would never get sober. I'm two.
Your sober now me is if I when I say

(18:02):
I'm gonna do something, I will do it regardless of
how long that it takes me. So that will power.
That's a muscle regards like I don't care if, like
if you're ripped or not. That's a muscle up here.
And that's that's something that those people who relentlessly put
you down wish that they had.

Speaker 1 (18:22):
Oh it's projection. A lot of people they project stuff
onto you because that's how they feel about themselves. And
a lot of people see the pretendularly you and they
don't want you to tap into that. They don't want
you to see it because they know that it's something special.
So anyone who is listening, stop the negative self talk
first and foremost, and get away from those people that

(18:43):
are dream killers. Because if they don't have what it
takes to make their dreams come true, guess what's gonna happen.
They're gonna try to deter you from making your dreams
come true. For fear that you're gonna get better than them,
You're gonna leave them behind? Are you not gonna be
that crutch that they're used to? So at the end
of the day, take a deep breath and keep pushing

(19:07):
because you are here for a reason. That gift that
God has made room for you is gonna continue to
make room for you. So keep walking, keep growing, keep creating,
and just keep believing. As long as you do that
you will be. You will go as far as you
can think or you could dream, or you believe, you
will go there.

Speaker 3 (19:27):
Absolutely. It's amazing that you bring up God into it,
because I'm gonna bring up like this little, short, little
short story that happened to me in my final semester,
right when I was like getting sober from like from
my alcoholism. One like, I was around like a group
of people that were not at my favor, and it

(19:50):
took one day when I literally, I believe Tuesday. I
still think it was God's voice to Lily told me
to leave these people. I didn't question it, I obeyed,
and ever since then, I feel like that's among many
great things God has done for me. But God whispering
that voice in my hood to tell me to leave
that place had to be one of the best things

(20:12):
to ever do, to ever do for me, because when
you leave, like a person or a group of people,
not only a window, but a door opens to you.
Like literally, when you turn your back, the door opens.
Like I'm not making this up.

Speaker 1 (20:28):
Absolutely you have to be you have to be obedient,
and you also have to have that discernment to know
that the voice that you're hearing is God and not
the end. Because that that happens, it has happened to
me and me too. I thank God that I'm able
to sit here and talk about it without getting teary
eyed are emotional about it because being in a dark

(20:49):
place once upon a time, I felt like hell to
claw myself out of that dark place. And I'm not
about anyone anyone take me back to that, you know,
I just I'm not. I just can't and I don't
care if it's friend, family, whatever, whoever. It just can't happen.

(21:10):
Like God has been too good to me. And I
can talk about God all day long because I love
him so much. And yes, and let's talk about the
mindset though, because a as a certified mindset coach. That
is something that I am passionate about. You have to
believe or to won't make that decision to actually do
it and bring it to fruition. So talk about the

(21:34):
importance of your mindset so that you can get away
from that scarcity mindset to a mindset of prosperity in
a bundance.

Speaker 2 (21:42):
Yes.

Speaker 3 (21:43):
So two years ago, summer twenty twenty three, I tell
people at my signings, I tell people in AA I
consider that the most devastating time but also the most
life changing time of my life because there was just
so much much that God was revealing to me. So
there's this quote that always passes around on Facebook and

(22:06):
I always get chills, like every time I look at it.
But it says, if God removes people from your life,
it means that he was present in a room and
heard things that you didn't and wasn't present for It's
something it says something like that, and I get chills
about it every single time because that was so true

(22:29):
for my case, because I would have people, because I
was around people who would act like they loved me
to my face. But what's plotting my demise when I
wasn't around? Because the thing is like that last semester.
I don't think I ever told you this, but I
put on my first play at McNeice. I told myself,
like when I got sober, I'm like, this is a

(22:52):
message that I need to share with people, Like I
just can't sit on this. So I put on a
play and they told me that no one was going
to go see my play, and that MacNeice all the
seats were filled. It wasn't even about people showing up
for me, but it was about people showing up for
the message because like what I go through, what many

(23:13):
go through, like it is very common, especially on a
college campus.

Speaker 1 (23:18):
Oh yeah, yeah, absolutely, well I'm glad that you did that.
I wish I would have been there to support you.
When you're walking in purpose, you have to know that
it's bigger than you. Always about inspiring somebody else to
become them their best selves. That's what I've You know,
if you're doing anything for the sake of money, you
already messed up, because when you are your purpose, money

(23:41):
will come because God go make sure that he got you,
Otherwise he wouldn't have given to pour into other people.
And so I've lost a lot of people by thinking
this way, and a lot of people don't realize that
I'm a very genuine person. So when they encounter me,
it's almost like, wait a minute, she's too good to
be true, or what does she want? Or I mean,

(24:03):
it's always something, and I just have to tell people
I am who I am, I'm who God made me.
I was not always this person, So be glad that
you getting this person and not the person that I
hated looking at that in the mirror, who didn't care
about people's feelings are anything. It was my way or
the highway. And I did not like myself when I

(24:24):
was that way. So I worked on me. I work
on me every day. It is a daily process that
you have to go through in order to become better.
When you go through a healing journey, and I know
that you notice, and we didn't talked about this before. Absolutely,
you see life through a different lens. You hit you off,

(24:45):
you just roll off your back. Now what the things
that you used to worry about are take on because
sometimes we take on other people's problems that they never
asked us to take on. Absolutely, I found myself trying
to fix everybody else's problems, realizing that I was covering
up being broken on the inside. So that was like

(25:05):
if it don't if if you ask for my advice
and I give it to you, you don't take it,
I'm washing my hands with it and to do that
with me. So I'm just learning how to mind my business,
you know, just learn how to mind my business. And
I am enjoying the ride. I get to talk and
meet to people like yourself. Have you on the podcast,

(25:26):
you know? And I'm just I'm just excited about life
and where God is taking me as well as taking you.
And I'm so again I just can't say how proud
I am enough of you, because I am so Besides
everything that you got coming up, how how are you
like spending your time before you get back into the
hustle and bustle or things beside the Ecoin therapy? What

(25:50):
do you do to just relax and enjoy life?

Speaker 3 (25:56):
Well, I think you can relate. I think you can
relate to this. But when do us writers actually relax?
When we finish one thing, we go into the next.
So I guess my definition of relaxation right now would
be working on the sequel Alicans fantasy book. This will
be my eighth book. But that's all. I'm not planned

(26:22):
like right now, I can't share too much. But that's
that's pretty much it as a right now. But even that,
that's that. I'm just blessed to still be able to
be busy and also be busy in a positive manner.

Speaker 1 (26:39):
Absolutely. And then when you when you are operating into
things that you love, you don't see it as work.

Speaker 3 (26:45):
I don't, not at all.

Speaker 1 (26:47):
It's like just another day, right, It's another day, and
this is what I'm doing. Yes, When do you sleep?
When I go to sleep, I sleep.

Speaker 3 (26:56):
Oh yeah. One thing about dream chasing, I tell people,
if you're chasing any dream, prepare to lose sleep, Like
I just I just gotta be blunted about that. If
you're when your dream, lose a lot of sleep. But
it's worth it, though, no matter how small or how
big the result.

Speaker 2 (27:16):
Yep.

Speaker 1 (27:17):
But see, I'm old, I'm old, I'm older now. I
am older now. So I get my sleep. I love sleep.
I go to bed early, and I'm not apologizing for it.
Whenever I feel like I need to go and rest,
I allow myself to rest because my mind I don't
it's constantly going. I don't turn it off. Absolutely, I

(27:39):
cannot turn off, and so some nights it's hard for
me to sleep. Some nights I don't get any sleep,
But some nights I like ten hours of sleep because
I'm going to bed by eight o'clock. Good night, right,
all right? So tell the people how they can connect
with you. How can they get I Talk to Horses
and your other books? How they how can they follow
you so they can find out all the information about

(28:02):
your upcoming album and the upcoming fantasy book.

Speaker 3 (28:06):
So my Instagram and TikTok Candle is the exact same
stallion of stories. I have my own author website now
that is titled Jalenjmartin dot com. And if reading when,
like if anybody out there wants to learn more about
upcoming things, I have my official author newsletter, Thrivee on
my author newsletter and as far as that I Talk

(28:28):
To Horses album, it'll be available on all music platforms
August fifteenth. The actual book is available on Amazon. There's
print book and eat.

Speaker 1 (28:38):
Book, and listeners don't be alarmed. All of this information
will be in the show notes so you can get
it and support and follow and get to know Jalen
Moore as he shares his story and his journey with us.
So before we get off, are there any words of encouragement,
of parting, words of inspiration that you would like to

(28:58):
share with the listeners.

Speaker 3 (29:00):
Don't be afraid of hard work. There's gonna be there's
I've had many days like recently where it just feels
like very hard. Like when it comes to sacrifices, there
is no limit. God will have you sacrifice as much
as He needs you to in order to get to
His plan, not your plan, his plan. So if you

(29:21):
just feel like, oh, I'm just sacrificing too much, trust me,
you have not sacrificed enough. So my so before I close,
I would just say, don't fear sacrifice. It will be
worth it in the end. Trust me.
