Welcome to KIDS FIRST! Coming Attractions — your VIP pass to the silver screen, packed with authentic, kid-powered insights! Today, our reporters Isabelle V. and Hadley B. are here to share their thoughts on the short film, The Short Game. If you think golf is a snoozefest, this film will definitely change your mind. In fact, you don’t even have to love golf to enjoy it—you just have to care about people. We love that the story is shown through the eyes of a teenager filming a documentary.

The film's message is to treat others with kindness, as there's always more to a person than what you see on the surface. Be forewarned, however, that it does contain some mild profanity, as well as depictions of death and bullying.

The Short Game is available in theaters on August 29, 2025.

The Short Game is a heartfelt sports film about a teenage golfer named Jeremy Avery (Ben Kriger), who’s chasing his dreams of getting a college scholarship while also taking care of his autistic younger brother, Ethan (Owen Himfar). At first, Jeremy sees Ethan as a burden, but he soon realizes that his brother has a unique and special talent for golf. As the pressure mounts and the family struggles to strive, the brothers’ bond grows closer and closer as they find their strength in each other. Their new connection leads to a big turning point at the Amateur All-State High School Championship, where everything they've learned is put to the test.

Hi, I'm happy reporting for kids script.

Speaker 3 (00:42):
Hi I'm Isabella reporting for Kids First and today I'll
be reviewing the film The Short Game. The Short Game
is a heartwarming film with great representation and an amazing cast,
with a great message along with great carec to development
from the protagonist and his relationship with his brother.

Speaker 2 (00:56):
The storyline Ball is the Texas high schools name Jeremy,
a prey played by Dan Kreiger who really wants to
evolve squash, but his plans are held back due to
having to take care of his autistic rather Ethan, plighted
by Owen Schubart.

Speaker 3 (01:08):
Jeremy dismisses Ethan's abilities and believes he's getting in the way,
leading him having to choose between his brother and Golf.
The character development in this film was outstanding, especially for Jeremy.
It feels completely realistic for the situation he was in,
and I found myself easily understanding and liking his character.

Speaker 2 (01:23):
The relationship between Jeremy and his brother Ethan is really
important to the storyline. Initially, Jeremy gets upset because he
has to care for his brother, but then Jeremy and
his friend Tommy played by Tylon Loughton, figure out a
way to involve Ethan and the game.

Speaker 3 (01:40):
The cinematography in this film by Greg Matthews is beautiful
and I love that it's shown through a teenager filming
a documentary. It's so unique and adds to the realism
of the story. Another technical aspect I enjoyed was the
music composed by Brandon ma It adds so much emotion
to the story. The story itself is also wonderfully written
and shows a great portrayal of autism and how people
view it.

Speaker 2 (02:00):
One of the things that I love in this film
is the golf course setting, especially the sunset. Community is important.
I like how all the characters support the high school tournament.
The film's message is that you don't need anything to
do what you love. You just need to believe.

Speaker 3 (02:15):
The message of the Short Game is to be kind
to others because there's always more to a person be one.
There is mild profanity along with depictions of death and bullying.

Speaker 2 (02:23):
I give The Short Game five out of five stars,
and I recommend it for kids ages eight to twelve
plus adults.

Speaker 3 (02:30):
I give The Short Game five and five stars and
recommend it to ages twelve to eighteen plus adults.
