Müfessirlerin çoğunluğuna göre sûrenin tamamı Mekke döneminde inmiştir; 28 ve 29. âyetlerin Medine döneminde Bedir Savaşı’na katılan müşrikler hakkında indiğine dair rivayetler de vardır.
