Sûre, özellikle kadın haklarından, onların hukûkî ve sosyal konumlarından bahsettiği için bu adı almıştır. Sûrenin, hicretten sonra 5 veya 6. yılda Müreysî Gazvesi’nde indiği bilinen teyemmüm âyetini ihtiva etmesi, ağırlıklı olarak bu yıllarda indiğini düşündürmektedir.
