Mushaftaki sıralamada 9. iniş sırasına göre 113. sûre olan Tevbe sûresi, son iki âyet hariç Medine döneminde, Peygamber Efendimizin irtihaline yakın bir zamanda inmiştir. 129 âyetten oluşan sûre, adını Allah’ın kullarının tövbesini kabul edeceğini bildirdiği 104. âyetten almıştır. İlk âyette geçen “berâet” kelimesinden dolayı sûreye “Berâe” adı da verilmiştir. Başında besmele olmayan tek sûredir. Sûrenin başına besmelenin yazılmamış oluşunu bazı bilginler, onun bir önceki sûrenin devamı mahiyetinde oluşu ile açıklamışlardır.
