Speaker 1 (00:00):
It's banned practice night. We normally meet up at about
seven p m. At Neil's house. Neil is our bass player,
and his mom and dad let us practice there. He's
kind of a mamma's boy, which is probably why his
parents like us to come here so they can keep
an eye on him. Incidentally, his dad is our self
(00:21):
appointed manager. He gets us gigs and he'll drive us
to them. The drummer is Andy, but he doesn't come
every week because of the noise he makes. We've only
been playing for a couple of years. Except for Andy,
he's only been playing for seven months. We're getting better,
but it seems to be an uphill struggle most of
the time. To night will be a little different, though
(00:45):
we're not actually practicing. The power will be off because
all the miners have gone on strike, so now we
have power cuts nearly every day. We were going to
cancel it, but Neil rang and told us to go
around anyway. His parents will be out, and his girlfriend,
Kimberly wants us to have a candlelit seance. She will
(01:08):
bring some cakes make it more enjoyable. To be honest,
I really didn't fancy it, but there was nothing better
out there, most of the pubs will be closed. I
go onto the bus and went upstairs so I could
have a smoke. One of our mates was already up there,
Dan Taylor. I sat next to him and offered him
a cigarette, which he declined. I'm pleased to say I
(01:31):
only have three left to last me until tomorrow. I
asked him where he was going, and he told me
he was going to Neil Butterworths. He'd been invited to
a seance. Well. I laughed out loud and told him
I had been invited also. We wondered what it would
be like. We had discussed it further until it was
time to get off the bus. Seems we had a
(01:52):
lot more questions than answers. Neil greeted us at the
door and invited us to go in. There was only
him and Kimberly there. Dan asked if anyone else was coming.
Neil said he'd invited three more people. Two declined and
one accepted, but gave back word. Twenty minutes later. The
dining table was to be our venue for the evening.
(02:16):
Kimberly had got it looking nice. The table was covered
with a white tablecloth, very lacy and pretty around the
outside of the table were cards with the letters of
the alphabet, plus cards numbered zero to nine. There was
also a yes and a no card near the center
of the table. Also in the center of the table
(02:37):
was a small, upturned sherry glass. Is this a Ouiji board?
Asked Dan, I thought we'd be invited to a proper seance. Well,
Kimberly replies, this will be a proper seance. We will
contact real spirits. Plus I will write down what they say,
so you should be able to check the dates and
(02:58):
places for authenticity. And the correct name, by the way,
is a Ouija board. Sorry, I wasn't trying to be
rude or disparaging, Kimberly, I always thought the ouija was
a parlor game, trying to frighten people just for laughs,
with something pushing the pointer or glass in our case,
(03:18):
just spelling out scary messages. Well, she replies to Dan
that she can assure him none of them there will
be pushing or moving that glass. They can put their
finger on the glass individually to make sure that no
one's cheating. And then we were all ready to get going.
We sat down at the table, one on each side,
(03:39):
Kimberly at the head. She turned the glass upside down,
put her index finger on it, and then told us
to place our index fingers lightly on top of hers.
And then she inquired, is there anybody there? Well, there
was no response. She asked again, please make your presence
(03:59):
known to us. The glass started to move slowly. At first,
it moved to yes, and Kimberly asks what their name is,
and the glass spells out a L B E RT Albert. Well.
I watched very closely as the glass moved to see
(04:21):
who was moving it, but it was impossible to tell
with all the four fingers on it at one time.
Dan was absolutely skeptical. He wanted to know who was
exactly moving that glass. Well, Kimberly tells him that, hey, okay,
you put your finger on the glass first and see
if you notice anyone moving it. So Dan did that.
(04:42):
Now his finger was the one touching the glass, so
he does that, and Kimberly starts asking more questions, like
how old is Albert? What year had he been born? Well,
to my amazement, the glass seemed to move noticeably quicker
as it spells out seventeen eighty two. I asked if
(05:03):
I could put my finger on the glass, and so
I do. Albert was asked where he had been born,
and then the glass spelled out Dulwich du l w
I c h. I had noticed no one trying to
move that glass, so asked if Dan and I could
try on our own, and Dan goes first. He asks
(05:26):
when Albert died, and he gets this immediate answer, eighteen
fifty one. Now it was my turn. I put my
finger on the glass and ask how old were you
when you died? Well, nothing happened, So then I ask
are you still there? Well, the glass immediately shoots over
to yes, and then I quickly pulled my finger off
(05:47):
the glass. It felt spooky. I knew that wasn't me.
The glass moved all by itself. Lauren kind of has
a chuckle over this, but then I'm suddenly getting scared
by this whole thing, and I don't want to do
it anymore. Kimberly goes into the kitchen to make some
tea and then brought out some little iced fancies. There
(06:07):
were eight in the box, so we all had a
couple each with a nice cup of tea. While we're
drinking our tea, Dan asked me why I asked, so
shocked when I was the only person holding the glass
and it moved, and I told him that I was
just very surprised that this glass moved by itself, and
I just thought this was a game, that one of
(06:29):
the four of us was actually moving the glass and
taking turns or something. Then the glass moved very quickly
by itself. I felt frightened to think that this was
an actual spirit, this was somebody's ghost. I felt another
chill come over me just when I was telling him
that we cleared our plates and cups away, brushed the
(06:51):
crumbs off the table, and sat back down again. Does
anyone want to change places? Kimberly asks us, and then
she all wanted to know if everyone was okay with
her being our spokesperson. All I wanted to do was
sit out for around. But Dan and Neil they started
laughing at me, saying I was being a baby, saying
(07:12):
spirits can't hurt you. Living people don't even need to
worry about that. So yeah, I fell into the peer
pressure and I joined in again, but I still had
mixed feelings. I was very anxious about whether I was
doing something evil, Like I had this feeling come over
me that what I was doing was very wrong and
it felt very scary. Nobody made it apparent that any
(07:35):
changes were needed, so we just resume a new session
as it was. Kimberly thanks our previous visitors and then
says goodbye to them. She continued by inviting new visitors
to our seance, and it didn't take long for another
spirit to make its presence known. This time it was
(07:56):
a woman. She was called Elizabeth, but had always been
known as Bess. She was born in Stroud in eighteen
twenty one, died in a railway crash in eighteen forty
three near Dudley in Birmingham. Kimberly wrote down all the
information that she had been told by this spirit and
then thanked her and then told her to leave. Well,
(08:19):
by this time, I'm starting to get a little more comfortable.
It was sort of like watching the teleprinter in the
football results on a Saturday afternoon, with everything being spelled
out one letter at a time. Neil wanted a break.
He had to use the bathroom, so Dan and I
teased him about going upstairs all by himself. There might
be spirits lurking up there. When he returned, we started
(08:43):
another session with Kimberly asking the questions again. It seemed
to be working all right, so we didn't feel the
need to change it. This time, we got a French person, Jean.
She'd been born in fourteen twelve in France. Kimberly asked
her what her father's name was, and she spelled out
Jock jac Ques. Kimberly also asked for her mother's name,
(09:08):
and the reply was Isabelle romy. Kimberly made sure she
wrote all of these names and dates down so that
we could look them up later if we wanted to
learn more about them. Kimberly then asked how old she
was when she died, and the answer was nineteen. Kimberly
was quite shocked at this point and paused for a
(09:28):
few minutes since she was just thinking, and she asks
this spirit, are you the person who became known as
Joan of Arc and the answer was yes. Kimberly still
seemed quite shocked. She looked like she didn't even believe
what she was reading. Plus she looked like she was
(09:48):
starting to get a little angry. She wanted the spirit
to prove it. We all sat wondering what was going on.
The glass moved three times around the table when all
of us go of the glass. Then the glass, with
nobody touching it, spelled out a very chilling message that said,
like her, you will burn well. Kimberly asks when, and
(10:12):
then it spells out three, two and one. And then
suddenly Kimberly lets out a very loud cry, and she's shouting,
I'm burning, I'm burning well. Neil grabs her, puts his
arms around her to comfort her. After a couple of
seconds he lets go and he's saying, she's really burning.
(10:34):
Somebody gets some water. Dan rushes into the kitchen, grabs
a cup of cold water and throws it onto Kimberly.
It takes a minute or two for her to feel better,
for that burning sensation to stop. She starts yelling, what
did you do that for? We all looked at her,
totally astonished. I mean, of course well. In the days
(10:56):
immediately after all of this happened, Dan researched the names
and dates that Kimberly had written down. They all seemed
to corroborate that it was indeed Joan of Arc. She
had been burnt at the stake for hearsay in the
thirtieth of May in fourteen thirty one. She was only
(11:16):
nineteen years old. The end. Thank you for being here,
Thank you for listening. We all have the questions. That's
why we stay curious.
