Inoltre la difficoltà a controllare l'acqua e il modo imprevedibile con cui il colore si diffonde attraverso di essa, complicano ulteriormente le cose.
Sebbene questi ostacoli possano spaventare il principiante, va detto che gli acquerelli sono un medium molto versatile.
Infatti sono adatti a creare schizzi rapidi en plein air o in viaggio, così come a riprodurre scene di urban sketching, ricorrendo anche a tecniche miste.
Si può inoltre scegliere di dipingere con velature trasparenti, così come a macchia, oppure optare per una pittura rapida e leggera, come per dipinti più densi e strutturati.
