Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hey, what's going on?

Speaker 2 (00:00):
Y'all?

Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome to a new episode of the Late Now Lakes
Show podcast, power by ninety Media Group. It is your
host to Ricky and I am joined by a very
very special guest today. You know her. You know, the
name just precedes itself. I've already messed it up twice.
I won't mess it up this time. Claire Delon is
joining us from the Guardian and artist from Tiny Desk. Claire,

(00:21):
thank you for joining. How are you?

Speaker 2 (00:22):
Oh my gosh, thanks for having me. I'm excited to
finally chop it up with you, not typed out on
the timeline like Live and Living Color.

Speaker 1 (00:30):
Yeah, no, for real. It's one of those online friendships
that you are just so comfortable in the DM talking Lakers,
and when you come to reality, it's like, I don't
think I've ever held a conversation with this person by
outside of texting. So yeah, no, it's cool. I appreciate
you stopping by. It's it's gonna have a good time today.
And as you guys already know, make sure you hit
that subscribe button if you want to listen to more

(00:52):
great interviews like Claire on The Late nw Lakes Show podcast.
YouTube and wherever you get your hashtag good content, Claire,
I'm just going to get right into it. I don't
know if the people behind me can see. I don't
know if you can see. It's just all white, right,
It's just a white background behind me. Yeah, I think
you know what that means in December in the Midwest.
Why don't well, why don't you tell the folks why
it is so white behind me? Outside of my house?

Speaker 2 (01:14):
Yeah, something we don't really have here in Los Angeles
called snow. I believe it's been a while since they've
seen it in person, but I do recall the joys
of scraping it off my car, which I don't miss.

Speaker 1 (01:27):
Yeah, I bet, I bet no. I I was planning
out doing my notes. I saw I notice Claire is
a Minnesota girl through and through. She did the Midwestern
or Laker fan dream, growing up in the Midwest, being
on the opposite side of every basketball argument, and then
going to the land of milk and honey into Los

(01:48):
Angeles and now is living the dream cover in the Lakers.
So I just wanted to, you know, to share that
piece of history back there with you, Claire, to bring
up the old memories I hope you will. No, absolutely, yeah,
I gotta know, because, like I said, it took me
to do the research to find out you was from Minnesota.
And one thing about folks from Minnesota that I don't

(02:09):
hear from you is the heavy Minnesota accent. So just
pull the curtain behind the scenes, tell the folks. I guess,
since the accent is in there, what is the most
Minnesota thing about you that is still true and true
to this day.

Speaker 2 (02:23):
Well, so, I'm actually originally from New York. I moved
to Minnesota in middle school, and so I think that
probably explains. I think the two accents are very both strong,
but they kind of neutralize each other. So now I
kind of just have I would say, like a generic American,
like maybe even California accent. The most Minnesota thing about me,
I mean, I guess I love Prince. That's that feels

(02:46):
very like fundamentally Minnesotan. I h yeah, I love I
love Prince. I think the most Minnesota thing about me
is probably just that I know Minneapolis is a cool city,
because I think a lot of people who either aren't
from the Midwest or haven't been there kind of just
think of it as like flyover country. But I still
do have like a lot of love and respect for

(03:07):
that town, both like as a sports town but also
as like a music and art and culture town. Even
if they don't even if they don't love me back
sometimes because of my sports takes, I still love them.

Speaker 1 (03:18):
I hear that. And I second that Minnesota is beautiful
and as long as you can survive those months right
where it will get below zero and temperature. It's not
for the week, right, but that summer, the spring, summertime,
you know, early fall in the Midwest, and especially around
bodies of water like Minnesota, land of a thousand, ten

(03:39):
thousand lakes. Yep, it you can't beat it. We interviewed
Mike Trudell a couple of years back, and he also,
you know, still shares that that love for the hometown.
And as as y'all should, does that did the la
or I guess Minnesota and New York fandom travel across
other sports? Like where where did all the sports allegiances lay?
We're Lakers throwing through, but what about football and baseball?

Speaker 2 (04:02):
So I actually didn't really get into sports until later
in life. I was definitely like an artsy kid growing
up in New York just like wasn't really into sports
at all. I didn't really get into basketball until like
my early twenties actually, so I don't really have like
a fandom per se, except for living in LA for
eight years, I've become like a huge Dodgers fan. Yeah,

(04:22):
And I would say my Dodgers fandom is the only
team that I'm like a fan of, where like my
emotions live and die with their success, and like I
feel just like, like the happiest I've ever been in
my life was Game seven of this World series. Like
that was like one of the best nights of my life.
I would say the Lakers. I don't really consider myself

(04:43):
like a fan. It's more like it almost feels like
I'm working for like a stage production of a play,
and like you get to know the people who are
doing the costumes and the makeup and everything, and so
it's like, of course you want to see them kill
it every night. Of course you want to see them
like thrat you want the actor to like nail it.
That's kind of how I feel about the Lakers. It's
like I'm just kind of in so deep with that

(05:06):
world that like I know all the characters involved. I
know the you know, like the PR team and the
athletes who play for them and everything, and I want
them to be happy and to succeed. It's less like
it's more personal and less like a fandom. Like I
don't know how I would feel if I stopped covering
the team and stopped being there, Like, I don't know

(05:26):
if I would feel like that fantom. I'm sure I'll
always feel an affinity for that team just because of
all the time I've spent and also living in LA
I just sort of root for the home team. But yeah,
it's different. My Dodgers fandom is like fandom. Like I
saw I bumped into Yamamoto in the tunnel at a
Lakers game recently, and I was like starstruck. I was like,

(05:46):
oh my god, So yeah.

Speaker 1 (05:49):
That's awesome. So it makes a lot of sense, like
you said, with your background with the arts and living
coming up in New York and you being very much
you know, having that musical background, and now you have
looked at the business of covering the Lakers as that
stage production. I think that's a really unique perspective of
how folks look at their work and their crafts appreciate

(06:11):
those insights. Let's talk about that stage production that is
the Los Angeles Lakers. I would say that they are
selling out the box office these days. The Lakers are
seventeen and six, second in the West, eight and two
in their last ten wins, like last night over Philly
with one hundred and twelve to one hundred and eight.
They're scoring almost one hundred and nineteen points a night,

(06:32):
which is I've seen a high octane, high octane excuse me,
Lakers offenses, but I don't think it's fully set in
just the volume in which they're scoring this year. I
wish I did more prep to compare it to points
per game over the previous years, but it just feels
like having just the baseline of Luka Doncic going to

(06:53):
give you thirty plus points. It's insane. Claire, So yeah,
just taking it all in, looking at how the season
and has gone so far. They swept their group in
the NBA Clup. What has been your just overall review
of this first act of this NBA season for your
Los Angeles Akers.

Speaker 2 (07:11):
I mean, I think it's gone about as well as
it possibly could have, Like knowing what we knew in
the off season, I think pretty much all of the
off season signings. I would say Marcus Smart's health notwithstanding
because that's been a little problematic, but like just his availability,
But like all of their signings from the off season
have been pretty awesome so far. Like the deandret and

(07:32):
experiment gone about as well as it possibly could have.
Jake Laarabia's turning out to be potentially looking like a
fifth starter candidate, so that's going really well. Austin made
the leap from like bonafide top three player on a
serious team to like bonifide like all NBA All Star
level player. Yeah, I mean Lebron starting to look at

(07:53):
himself again after last night, Luca's playing like an MVP candidate.
I think it's going about as well as it astlete could.
I would just say, like the concerns that I had
going into this season, like I thought they were going
to be, you know, a bonfid playoff team like not
in the play and like some media pundits had predicted.
But I knew they were going to be probably like
somewhere in like the top four. But the issues with

(08:16):
on the defensive end that I was worried about, I
think are still proving themselves out, and I personally still
believe that like to become on that Oklahoma City tier
of contender, Like, I think they do need a trade,
but they're definitely right up there with Denver Houston. Like
I think there's they're on that second tier of contenders,

(08:36):
which I would refer to as kind of like like
serious teams that have a serious chance with like serious flaws,
you know, and all of those all of those teams
have that Oklahoma City not to say they're flawless, but
their flaws are pretty inconsequential compared to their other competition
in the West.

Speaker 1 (08:56):
It's hard to not think of it as okay, see
in the field at this point, right, yes, the defending
chance defending a reigning MVP who is still you know,
showing that he is not slowing down in that regard
in SGA. Their standings in the West shows it, Their
record shows it, right, So I think it would just
be disingenuous at this point in time for this currently

(09:18):
constructed Lakers roster to say they're there, right, it's just
records difference that saying that they're on the same plane
they're not right now, and the Lakers, you know, a
game against okay see, albeit without Lebron, it did tell
there's still levels to this, right. I was saving this
for a little bit later, but I think it makes
a lot of sense as you were talking through kind
of you know, your thoughts on the gap. Is there

(09:41):
a is there smaller non earth shadowing shattering moves that
you see that the Lakers can make to close that
gap to where you feel like, hey, it's going to
be a series regardless even if OKC has the betting
line in their favor, or do you think clear that
the big rumblings every year in Lakerland which superstar is

(10:04):
going to end up in purple and gold in the
middle of the night. Where do you lay on how
far of a gap the Lakers are from? Okay see?

Speaker 2 (10:12):
I think in my you know, if I'm being totally honest,
I feel like there may be two moves away from
being on that tier just because okay see, is so
deep and Lakers currently have viewerst bench production in the
entire NBA, so not like you need to have a
deep bench in the playoffs. But to me, it's more
of like, I think, being able to go to your
bench during those eighty two games of the regular season

(10:34):
is part of what enables your superstars to have that
juice in the playoffs. And right now, the entire Big
Three are playing pretty heavy minute. So I would say
two moves to me would put them on that tier.
I think they have the best top end talent in
the league as far as like the top three, I mean,
I think that top three. I would put them against anybody.

(10:54):
You know, so I know, Jamal Murray's having a really
great season this year, and that kind of changes the
calculus for Denver, But I would still take you know, Luca,
Lebron and Austin against anyone. But yeah, I think I mean,
obviously like herb Jones is kind of the obvious target,
just because New Orleans is having a horrible disaster of
a season which was completely predictable and why everyone was

(11:16):
so confused about them trading up for that pick. But
I would say herb Jones is like the kind of
player they really need. They need like a bonafide fifth
starter to be in that RUI spot. I would say,
who can actually play both ends? Otherwise you're just I
think you're just asking too much of forty one year
old Bron to like anchor their wing defense. Night after

(11:38):
night in the regular season, So I would say DeAndre
has been like better than expected on that end to me,
But I still think they need a starting caliber wing
who can defend and shoot. And then I think they
need to improve their bench by at least one player,
like in a consolidation trade. I mean, I think Maxi
looks like he's pretty much beyond being an NBA rotation

(12:00):
at this point. I think the Gay contract is move
off able because it's expiring, I believe so. So yeah,
I would say like a consolidation trade for the bench
and then a move involving that first that they have
access to to improve that starting lineup defensively, that to
me would put them on that tier. I don't know
if the Lakers are willing to move that first this year.

(12:22):
I would hope that just seeing you know, how good
they've been at their highest and the fact that they
are second in the West right now would be enough
incentive to go for it. But I also have seen
many years of the Lakers being very hesitant to move
any draft capital to improve the roster in the regular season.
So yeah, that's kind of where I'm at with it.

(12:42):
I think there one move away from being like if
everything breaks right and two moves away from really being
on that Okay, see tier agreed.

Speaker 1 (12:53):
Makes all the sense in the world. And if we're
looking at that first round pick, and more so in
the context of changing and ownership, change of management. You know,
Mark Walter is running the show, right, So yeah, similar
to any takeover, you inherit the assets, you inherit the debt,

(13:14):
You inherit the regime that was there, unless you start
letting them go. Rob Alinka, you know, he still holds
his titles as of now of you know, deciding how
the Lakers use their assets to get better. And I
wonder and I would love your pov on it where
the speed to let's just say, excellency in lakerland, Mark Walter,

(13:38):
I'm sure with like his next stamp on acquisitions. Where
do you see that kind of playing out? Is this
a patient ramp up because they're also building their scouting department,
probably adding some new people in the front office with
Rob replacing Rob. Or are they gonna let Rob cook

(13:59):
this off seat, this trade deadline and off season to
improve the Lakers in the immediate term.

Speaker 2 (14:05):
I mean, I think they're already sort of like starting
to install alternate voices around is what I've heard, you know,
But I think it's going to be more of like
a gradual It seems like it's going to be more
of a gradual transition. I mean, I don't know this
to be true, but my sort of read on the
situation is that the sale itself was predicated on Genie

(14:26):
continuing to be involved in some degree. Rob's obviously like
Genie's kind of right hand extension of her in a
way it feels like. So I don't think there's gonna
be some like huge like table flipping transition this summer.
But I would be really surprised if Mark isn't like

(14:47):
very involved in any decisions that they make going forward.
Like I'm sure they're consulting with him on everything, and
he seems like the kind of owner who maybe isn't
super directly involved himself, but understands the importance of hiring
the right people and having the right minds in the room.
So I don't think there's gonna be any like long

(15:07):
term contracts signed this summer or anything like that without
marx like heavy involvement, or at least his his selection
of people's heavy involvement.

Speaker 1 (15:20):
Checks out to me. We're gonna take a quick break
and when we come back, I'm gonna start asking Claire
about all these great locker room questions that she asking Lebron.
I'm jealous. I'm Claire. If you've never realized how many
men are just jealous of you for being that close
to Lebron Ramon James Sr. You about to find out.
Lay Night Lake Show. We'll be right back Leaynow Lake Show,

(15:43):
We're back. I have Claire Denlon and if you'll somebody
ask her on the timeline if that's her real full name.
I don't have time to right now, but if you're
listening to this, ask her, ask her about her her name.
So let's get into it, Claire, So as you were
just giving us behind the scenes, you know, Lebron James
is one of those human beings on the planet that

(16:03):
is going to be recognizable no matter where he goes.
So he has been in the spotlight well over twenty
five years on this planet, and you know the opportunity
to be able to be in proximity, let alone speak
to him, is very unique circumstances for people. You have
been in the locker room with Lebron, you have been

(16:23):
able to ask him insightful questions, really cool questions that
it almost seems like Lebron wasn't even expecting. Question I
have for you with time I have with you any
what's the coolest moment What's the coolest most surprising part
about interacting with Lebron James so far?

Speaker 2 (16:41):
I think like the coolest part, I think those two
different things for me, Like answer wise, the coolest part
about interacting with Lebron is that I think we've come
to a place where I think he knows that I
ask questions that I've put a lot of thought and
time into and that I'm not just going to ask
him the same you know, boring stuff he gets asked
every night. And I think because of that, we've gotten

(17:02):
to a place where I can ask him something kind
of simple and it's not like a leading question, and
it's not it has no safeguards around it, for like
he has to answer it a certain way, and he
respects me enough, I think, or feels comfortable enough with
me to take that in a direction and actually like
give a long, interesting answer even if the question itself

(17:23):
isn't that involved. And I think that took like years
of kind of like rapport building, Whereas in the beginning,
I think I felt like I had to ask him
questions where you kind of, in my mind as a reporter,
like I kind of build guardrails of like there's no
easy exit for this question, like you have to say
something interesting. And now I think I can kind of
just throw him a lob and he'll say something interesting,

(17:45):
which that's really cool. The coolest moment for me was
I was in the locker room and like Austin was
giving his availability and this was during like the most
improved race last year, and Lebron was kind of just
like talking into the ether about Austin and how special
he was. And I was standing on the kind of
outskirts of the scrum in Austin's locker, So Lebron's like

(18:08):
to my right, and he's like talking about is like Austin.
He's like, he's that dude, like whatever might have used
some more colorful, colorful language than that. And I was
kind of nodding to him because I could hear him
better than I could hear Austin. Austin speaks very quietly
during his availability, and Lebron looks at me and he's like,
ain't that right, Claire? And I was just like whoa,

(18:29):
because I had never at that time, I had never
like formally introduced myself to him. And for like at
the podium they call on you so like they hear
your name that way, but in the locker room you
just kind of yell out stuff. And Lebron always talks
in the locker room, so to my knowledge, like my
name had never been spoken in front of him at all,

(18:50):
and I had never introduced myself. So I have a
few like mutuals with him, and I texted one of
them and I was like, did you tell him about me?
Like how does he know my And He's just like no,
Like he just knows his shit, you know what I mean,
Like he just knows he sees all watches all and
just like if you're doing cool work, like he'll find

(19:11):
out about it, you know. So yeah, that was really cool.
That was like a pinch me moment.

Speaker 1 (19:17):
For sure, you're killing it. Yeah, you're doing the good work.
And yeah, now you get to to put it on
I don't know your your resume or wherever you want
to put it. Lebron knows my name.

Speaker 2 (19:27):
Yeah, so it's pretty well Claire.

Speaker 1 (19:30):
I mean, this is, you know, Lebron James on Sunday night.
By the time everyone's hearing this, this is coming off
the back of twenty nine on twelve to seventeen, shooting
seven rebounds six to six, takes over the fourth quarter
ten straight points, right, hits the go ahead three. I
texted message you a few days ago, asked you, after Lebron,
you know, kind of a stinker shooting performs like, Hey,

(19:52):
any concern that starting to show that age? Claire goes, nah,
not really. Fast forward to today and this is what
we get.

Speaker 2 (19:59):
Right.

Speaker 1 (20:00):
So Lebron James obviously is still ramping up, missing a preseason,
missing training camp, this being his sixth or seventh game back.
He looked good last night. My question to you, Claire,
he continues this. Let's just say this is the norm
we get back used to with mister Lebron James. Do
you anticipate this being his last season? And if not,

(20:24):
do you anticipate there being a possibility he would play
somewhere other than the Crypto dot com arena for the
Los Angeles Lakers.

Speaker 2 (20:33):
I mean, I need to like preface this by saying
I'm not breaking any news or reporting anything. Just like
my own speculation, I think he's gonna I think he
hasn't decided yet, and I think he if I had
to guess, he's gonna decide before All Star, because I
think if he does decide to make this his last year,
he's gonna want to have some level of a retirement tour,

(20:56):
you know, and be able to give people some level
of a heads up. And I think All Star in
LA would be like a very logical place to make
that announcement, I think personally, or around that time, I think.
But I don't think he's decided yet. I genuinely think
he hasn't made up in his mind, and I think
it's determined on how many more games like last night
he can stack, you know, and and how how much

(21:19):
like himself he can feel, and on an extended timeline
as far as the I just like I know that
he doesn't want to go out sad, you know what
I mean, So he if he can keep playing at
a high level. I'm sure he wants to play as
long as possible, but I know he also doesn't want
to like have diminishing returns as far as playing in LA.
I think this summer was rough. I think the kind

(21:41):
of back and forth with the front office was not
I mean I would if that was him, I would
not have responded super kindly to that, like them not
offering him that extension, and and sort of like forecasting
to the media that they were moving in a different direction,
like you know with Leeuka. But it's going so well now,

(22:03):
so I would have said this summer like for sure,
no matter whether he retires or not, I think this
is his last season with the Lakers, but it's going
so well and the team chemistry is so good, Like
I think it's kind of dependent maybe a little bit
on like what they do this postseason, like if they
make a deep run. I think nothing matters to Lebron
more than winning, and if he feels like LA is

(22:25):
his best chance to do that, I think he's down
to kind of let Bygonzi bygones maybe and just focus
on winning. If they are a first round exit again,
I would imagine, like I could see I can't really
see him playing anywhere besides Cleveland or LA, to be honest,
I don't think he's going to play for like a
new team at this point in his career, But I
could imagine a Cleveland reunion if it doesn't go well

(22:50):
this postseason. But I haven't ruled out him retiring at
the end this year either. I don't know, Like I think,
to me, it's one more year, max, is what I
would guess, just because I know he's been super vocal
about not wanting to decline in public view, like he
doesn't want to, yeah, you know, go out as like

(23:11):
a bench player or something. So I would say, just
complete speculation, and like me just reading the tea leaves
one more season would be the most I would imagine.
And I think whether or not that one season's in
LA is completely dependent on what happens this year.

Speaker 1 (23:30):
That's my colst. Kwame has been saying the same thing.
So don't be surprised if he takes time privately to recalibrate,
figure out what he wants to do, and if he
decides he doesn't want to do it at the end
of the season, wouldn't surprise him. It sounds like it
wouldn't necessarily surprise you if he just says, all right,
that was a great run. I'm gonna go be Savannah's

(23:51):
husband for the rest of my life now, you know.
So he's at the stage and the book has been written.
All of this is the extra Cherry's on top. How
does he want to finish? It's the last check. But
Lebron's autobiography of his basketball career is already up there
with what some of the greatest stories ever told. So

(24:12):
how he wants to finish these last few pages completely
up to him, and he deserves it. Claire, let me
get you out of here on one last fun one.
Luca dotcit right like he's been unreal. Thirty one point
triple double against Philadelphia, fifteen rebounds, eleven assists. He controls
the game literally every single time he's on the court.

(24:33):
We've seen these big nights. We've gotten used to these
big nights. I've said it multiple times. I'm at the
point now where I'm just in the SMH mode. I'm
done jumping around, right, just shake my head and just
utter disbelief and just gratitude for the Dallas Mavericks for
giving us his gifts. Yeah, you know, the forty three
against the Clippers. Everything is Luca's world and we're just

(24:56):
all living in it. You are an artist. You are
seeing you perform with your group tiny deaths. I have
a question for you to get us wrapped up out here.
When you watch Luka Dancis play, what song or album
or artist does he remind you of.

Speaker 2 (25:14):
It's a great question. It's a very me question. I
love it. What song or artists? I mean, I feel
like it's a lot of it's it's got a lot
of swag, for sure, a lot of swag, a lot
of theater. No, like he really understands the kind of
theater of the moment. I don't mean this to Canoe.

(25:34):
I know, obviously Freddie Mercury and Queen is like very
like queer queer coded, which is great, but like that's
not what I mean it for in this connotation. But
I would say, like a Freddie Mercury where just like
a ton of swagger, a ton of understanding of the
theater and of the performance and of the grandeur of
it all. And and yeah, so I would go with
like a Queen like Freddie Mercury. I don't know what

(25:57):
song exactly, but maybe like we are Champions or something.
I don't know.

Speaker 1 (26:01):
The first one that jumps to my head and probably
the only one that I would answer correctly and the
game show would be Bohemian Rhapsody. Right, yeah, as well, yeah, right,
and all of that, I just imagine a lot of
you know, it's a whole bunch of stuff. Like Luca Honestly,
to me, he gets that part of theater, like Kobe
understood that part of theater. And not to say Lebron

(26:23):
doesn't understand that. It's just it seems like that part
of their game they put up there with ripping your throat,
It's like you have to know the fans have to
know it too, that you're going to lose when you
face me. Really really appreciate that about Luca's game. To
be honest, I didn't really have an answer prepared myself.
I was just really interested in yours, right, Yeah, boh

(26:46):
Evian Rhapsody is dope, I or Queen is dope, I
would say, leaning into that swagger, right, I don't. I
guess it's I'm thinking about it because he's in the
news a lot right now. But fifty understands. Fifty understands
exactly who he is. He understands every time he steps
into the building who he is perceived. He doesn't care

(27:07):
if he's the villain. In fact, he embraces it, you know,
Luca embraces it on the road and the hits. The
hits are undeniable bangers from children, the grandmothers. So yeah,
I'm going with.

Speaker 2 (27:19):
Especially because like the hit him doing an interview on
ABC News because it's one of the only channels you
can get in prison feels like a very Luca move.
It's so petty.

Speaker 1 (27:29):
I love that King Petty. So yeah, I'm here for it.
Maybe we'll do some intro music Audia with some fifty
cent But Claire, this is great. I really appreciate you
taking the time. Of course, hopefully this is not the
last time that we get you on the show. And yeah,
just everybody knows where to find you, so just any
any other tags or anything that you wanted to promote

(27:50):
that let us know.

Lakers and about the NBA at large at the Guardian.
