Learn UK English but podcast. Goodmorning, Rachel. How are you today?
Hello, Neil, I'm doing verywell and yourself very well Rachel,
thank you great. Today we're goingto discuss the extreme temperatures happening here in
(00:25):
Spain. Yes, Rachel, that'sright. It's rather warm, isn't it.
Indeed, and we're gearing up herefor a somewhat of extreme temperatures.
Really, Rachel, do tell look. Next summer here in Spain promises to
be one of the hottest sum record. Temperatures might exceed forty degrees celsius for
(00:45):
several consecutive days. Forty degrees celsius. That's right. Some riches in Spain,
like Madrid, Seville and Cordoba aretraditionally even hotter. Wow, did
you know, Neil. Experts saythat the world is already zero point eight
degrees celsius warmer due to global warming, which we contribute to by not looking
(01:07):
after our environment. Not point eightdegrees celsius warmer. That's it amazing,
isn't it. Does this have amassive effect on the climate? Rachel?
Absolutely, because with the warmer temperaturescomes change in ocean, melting polar ice
caps, which raise the water levelsin the long run. It's quite concerning
(01:30):
not to mention the entire ecosystem isaffected, which has adapted over many years
to certain conditions. Intriguing precisely, what else have you learned while researching this
topic. Climate changes not only causetemperature spikes but also disrupt rain patterns.
Parts of Spain, like Zaragotha haveseen excessive railinfall to the point of river
(01:55):
overflow in Tharagoza. Yes, Ihave funly there closely monitoring the barriers hole
in the water. They are almostsurpassing the limit, which could leave city
centers like Madrid and Barcelona submerged.Wow. Meanwhile, here in the south
east where I am in Valencia andin the north, we're experiencing drought.
(02:17):
This is devastating for crops and animalssuffer too. It's quite a serious situation
countrywide. Goodness, Rachel. Indrier places, people have to drink lots
of water because of the almost desertlike conditions. What do you do to
prepare when it gets really hot?To be honest, I don't have air
(02:37):
condition here yet, but I dohave fans. I also try to keep
windows shut during the day to keepthe sun and heat out. When it's
really hot, I avoid using theoven to prevent heating the house even more,
and of course I drink lots ofwater. Those are brilliant strategies,
but sadly everyone can afford to dothis. There are many living in inadequate
(02:59):
conditions without fans or air cognitioning, worsening their situation. It's undeniable, a
serious issue, yes, And ontop of that, global warming is adversely
affecting agriculture, making food production morechallenging. For instance, here in Spain,
a significant producer of fruits and vegetables, drought has caused many crops to
(03:23):
die. This in turn has ledto a reduction in food supply, increasing
prices. So it also impacts theeconomy. Right Precisely, we're not just
experiencing the direct effects of climate changelike extreme heat and drought, but also
indirectly affecting our lives through the economyand resource availability. We truly need to
(03:44):
take measures to combat climate change andadapt to these new conditions, don't you
think agreed? We must do ourpart individually, like saving water, reducing
our carbon footprint, and supporting policiesand actions that come back climate change.
Only then we can address this globalchallenge and build a more sustainable future for
(04:06):
all. Well put, Rachel,we'll touch based soon. Thanks for sharing
your experience and knowledge on such acrucial topic. Not at all, Neil,
it was a pleasure chat in.Stay call this summer until next time,
