(00:02):
You're listening to Legends Library. Nowhere's your host. He's a mountaineer and
Kyle Rawlins. Hi everybody, I'mLisa, and you're listening to Legends Library.
(00:24):
We are a podcast dedicated to theLegends line of Star Wars books and
the expanded universe. Today's a bitof a different episode because you'll have noticed
so far it's just me, that'sright. My co host has been well,
he's been very, very very swampedand very busy with the final draft
of Supernatural Encounters. He's also gettingthe audio drama geared up and he's making
(00:46):
the music and the sounds and everythingfor that. So that's where Kyle's been
at. So I thought I'd justthrow together kind of a fine little episode.
So what we're going to be talkingabout today is I've been working on
the YouTube channel. If you haven'tchecked it out already, you please do.
And we've been releasing a bunch ofshorts that I've been writing and trying
to release a couple every week, and I thought, you know, why
(01:08):
not just have like a fun episodewhere I just kind of play some of
the clips and we talk about it. So the first one, actually we
were going to talk about is theGalactic Museum. And this video was inspired
when I was reading x Wing WedgesGamble by Michael Stackpole and for listens.
As you know, we are currentlycovering the x Wing series and I thought,
(01:32):
you know, what a perfect opportunityto do a short because this was
a really inspirational moment. So let'scheck out the first short that I have
on YouTube. The Galactic Museum, located on Corson is first featured in Star
Wars Tales of a Jedi The Freedomnad Uprising, written by Tom Veach under
dark Horse Comics, set in threeninety nine eight b By. It later
(01:53):
reappeared in x Wing Wedges Gambled byMichael Stackpole, released under Bantam in nineteen
ninety six, and book two ofthe series. Rogue Squadron and seven a
By undergoes a reconnaissance mission to Corressant. The Rogues are there to map out
power grids, locate shield generators, and identify weaknesses. As the rebellion plots
(02:13):
it's next step forward in the continuingjourney to overthrow the empire now under zan
Izart's rule. With the suggestion ofthe newest member of Rogue Squadron, Lieutenant
pash Kraken, alongside with Commander Antillesand former Corsack agent Ayella west Sirie,
taken an intro prospective cultural look tothose adapting to life under the Empire and
(02:35):
its propaganda efforts by attending to theGalactic Museum. So obviously that was my
first one, and you know, has a few little glitches. I accidentally
called Wedge Untillies captain at that pointwhen he's commander, so I had corrected
that. But what I really likedabout the introduction of the Galactic Museum is
well, I personally have my firstjob was actually working a museum, so
(03:00):
this really struck a chord with me. Before we kind of get into the
actual discussion of the museum, Ijust want to make note of Tom Beach,
who had passed away this year,So we're actually going to start the
show talking about Tom Beach, andthen finished the show talking about Tom Beach
as well. What I love aboutTom Beach is he was so early in
(03:20):
his ideas and you know, veryforward with lucasfilm because there was no comics
at this point. He was basicallykind of the brainchild of the comics,
and he early as nineteen eighty eight. He approached Lucasfilm with this story and
it was actually his kind of youknow, four thousand and five thousand years
before Luke and it's the story aboutyou know, the Caldramic Caldromic family and
(03:45):
all that. But of course, you know, at the time, like
other even other Star or not StarWars authors, other comic book authors were
like, why are you trying topursue Star Wars? Star Wars is dead?
You know, we got the threemovies, what else is there to
do? But of course Tom wasyou know, he had a vision and
he got he was able to doit when dark Horse finally was granted the
(04:06):
contract and they contacted him saying, hey, let's do this. So instead
of his original idea that we dosee in Tales of the Jedi and with
a little bit that we get herefrom some of these images, is they
would do the Dark you know,he made the Dark Empire and got that
contract and that really started Star Warsthe comics and you know, and it
(04:29):
led to the Tales of the Jediand so many other things. So and
when he did the Tales of theJedi at the time, Kevin J.
Anderson was working on the Jedi Academytrilogy, and they kind of brain child
or sorry, they came They cametogether and discussed xar Koon because extra Koon
was, you know, the sithfloor that Kevin J. Anderson had come
(04:53):
up with, and then through thatthem together working together, that's how you
get exar Koon into the Tales ofthe JEDII series, which is fantastic if
you haven't checked out. But thesignificance of Tom and being able to do
all this, you know in theDark Arts or sorry, the Dark Empire
comics. He also came up withwith Anakin's name, so again thanks to
(05:16):
Tom. Like, we have alot of a lot of stuff. When
I mean Anakin, I mean AnakinSolo. There's the whole you know,
Leia gives birth and then everyone's crowdingon the baby and Solo is like,
oh, that's Han Solo Junior, and Leia's immedia was saying, no,
he's Anakin after his grandfather, whichI think is is very sweet and I
(05:40):
like that Tom came up with thatconcept. So with introducing the fact that
there is a galactic museum kind oflike the National Museum of Corressant and of
the Galaxy and basically it you know, it has a collection of artifacts from
like over centuries and you have likea whole floors of flora fauna. But
(06:01):
of course when the Empire gets inand they totally just change things. They
change the Jedi exhibits, they removerelics, they put in their own propaganda.
They rise up the emperor as well. So let's watch the second one.
Rogue squadrons attending to the Galactic Museumis an opportunistic first analysis of the
(06:23):
people corressant and how they're viewing theglorification of the Empire, filled with the
exhibits such as the Sith Artifact Room, vast displays of flora, fauna and
minerals, a floora dedicated to theEmperor, and a Jedi exhibit that ennobles
Darth Vader, all within the shadowof the Imperial Palace. The museum is
(06:44):
also featured or mentioned in other events, such as in Darth plagus I,
Jedi Darth Maul, Shadow Hunter,Republic Commando, Triple Zero, Shadows of
the Empire, mar Jade by theEmperor's Hand, two X Wing Crito's Trap
and Solo command and Han Solo inthe Law Legacy so kind of going on
my experience of working museums, I'veactually worked at two different museums in my
(07:06):
lifetime, my early teens going intouniversity. The first one was the Victoria
School Museum in Carlton Place, andthat it's actually famous for part of the
exhibit Arthur Roy Brown. And ifyou guys don't know who Roy Brown is,
he is the pilot that shot downthe Red Baron in World War One.
(07:27):
So I was kind of like notnecessary curator, but I was the
the textile experts, so I hadan understanding of you know, like the
knowledge of like fashions and trends andhow to take measurements and cataloging. I
did a lot of cataloging there, like a lot a lot of like boxes
and boxes of doilies. Doilies aftera while anyways, But with the collecting
(07:53):
museum here, you know, goingback to the propaganda thing and in Wedges
Gamble, there's this one scene thatI just have to have to talk about
because I absolutely love this and we'lldefinitely mention it when we finally cover the
show, but I'll probably read thequote there again. So in the exhibits
and in the final floor you havethe Emperor, the Emperor laying in state.
(08:16):
So it's basically like this exhibit ofhow great he was and how he's
handsome and you know, gentle andkind and all these lives that people like
Zanizard and say. Postage established afterthe Emperor was killed at the Battle of
Endor. So in the final exhibitwith with Palpatine, it's him lying in
(08:39):
state and you could see like inthis dark room, and this holographic image
of Darth Vader. Yeah, thatguy right there. So it's just this
image of him talking and giving thisfalse speech and these lies that they're filling
and feeding, sorry to the peopleof Corressant as well as the rest of
(09:03):
the Empire. So the holographic imagesof Vader says this, behold my master,
and weep. He has been stolenfrom us by those who embrace hatred.
The Emperor learned that the rebels hadstolen plants to the Imperial Planetary or
Extractor and intended to use the onethey were fabricating at Endor on inhabited planets.
(09:28):
So already they're saying that it's therebels that took over the desk Star
and we're intending to like, youknow, destroy planets. And you know,
hold people, I guess, ransomand kill people and murder, because
that's what the rebels are doing.According to the Emperor, he assembled his
fleet, Palpatine, and heedless ofpersonal danger, he had me taken to
(09:52):
Endoor. He infiltrated the half completedextractor, offering these rebels his forgiveness and
a hand in friendship. They rejectedhim and attacked his fleet. My master
had no alternative but to destroy thisdeath star, himself perishing in the process,
so his citizens could live on.I was slain with him, but
(10:13):
my death did not distress me whereit came in service to my master.
So again the lies that say prestageand he's on these are put here into
this museum is that Palpatine was actuallythe one who tried to stop them and
then self sacritized and blew himself upin the dusk stark. So you know,
(10:35):
total like total disregard of what actuallyhappened, and and it's just the
lies that they're willing to spread. And what's also significant about this museum is
like they're selling like hollow laser justlike you know, at this time,
this is what like DVDs and allthis stuff was kind of coming out and
they were concerned that you know, this information was being spread to other civilians
(10:56):
and could go this message could goout across the galley. So it's it
was just like an interesting just talkabout propaganda and something I thought we should
cover. So let's move on toour next short. So the next one
is a fun one. So thisis how Salacious be Crumb met Jab of
(11:18):
the Hut. So in the storythis come for higher So it's featured in
a decade of dark Horse number twoand the penciler is Alan UNA's letter at
Clem Robbins Colorless Art Night and thecover artist is Alan mcnami and the story
was written by Ryder Windham. Thecourt jester for Jab of the Hut,
Salacious be Crumb first met the crimelord off screen and two b by in
(11:39):
this Crumb for Hire, written byRyder Windham for the second issue in a
decade of dark Horse, having Businessto double cross Han solo on quin Station,
Han and Chu we call it aday and leave after delivering spice Java's
two major domo bib for Juna andbuild a corve annoyingly load the spice aboard
the eubrucking yacht Star Jewel to returnto Tattooen. How Ever, a stray
(12:00):
Kawaki and monkey lizard NATed to Kawakstuck on the station, spies his chance
to flee on the Star Jewel. With a grumble in his belly and urge
of fine dining, the creature sniffsout Jab is thrown gallery. Jaba now
returns only to find his lunch bathedin Silasius flees his Jaba attempts to chomp
and steals the bowl, bib andbuild a line by shouting enter, and
as Buildo draws his weapon to shootthe stinking vermin, Silastious hucks the bowl,
(12:24):
covering Buildo, bib and his gun. Jab, impressed with the hysterics,
cuddles up with Silastious and offers hisnew pet a job that if Jaba
keeps laughing, you'll keep living. What a threat that is. As long
as I keep laughing, you'll keepliving, poor poor little you know,
Star Wars Space Parrot. I lovethe fact that he sniffed at the bowl,
(12:46):
and then that's what Jaba found himlike floating around in his soup and
just feel like what is this? And then you know, obviously the group
getting fallen on BUILDO. So thatwas it was just like kind of a
fun one. I thought, youknow, why not, let's just see
this. Let's talk about sole speakCrumb, who later obviously is killed by
(13:09):
the rebels Luke and Leiah. Movingon to our next short. So when
the comic Dark Times three Pass toNowhere by Randy Stradley, and there's a
really interesting kind of moment in thecomics where Vader comes to Sidius and realizes
that Cidius fully intends to continue usingslavery, and that obviously is a trigger
(13:35):
for Anakin for obvious reasons, sincehe was a slave growing up and his
mother who died a slave, well, she was sort of freed and then
died. So let's play this.In the comic Dark Times three the Path
to Nowhere arc by Randy Strideley,Wells Hearty and mc harrison, Vader is
summoned to Sidius regarding a mission toMercana in nineteen b b y Cidius since
(14:00):
his trouble within his apprentice Vader havingbeen told by Commander Ville that on New
Polmpto, slavery was implemented, Sidiusrecalls Anakin Skywalker was a slave and apologizes
for family. To explain the situationearlier slavery, he states that exists in
the outer room is wrong and itwill end in time thanks to the Empire.
However, the Empire's actions on NewPalempto and elsewhere is different. Those
(14:22):
no slaves in this case, mostlyfemales and younglings, were separatists and will
be dealt with by work and willmake a positive contribution immerciful necessity. Otherwise,
Sidius leaves, believing he a certainVader will understand later Vader's troops notice
Vader is still displeased. It's oneof those moments where you know, you
(14:43):
feel their heartbreak just a little bitmore pro Vader like, and you understand
why his falls happened. I mean, like the person that he trusted.
Obviously Sidi has turned out to notbe who he exactly thought he was.
But you know, it's it's justheartbreaking, and I love this kind of
(15:07):
you know, that's why I madeTrioch to do like the transition of like
him thinking about his past and youknow, imagining like the Chance Cube.
Well, you know, we don'tknow about there. He doesn't know about
the Chance Cube, but we knowabout the chance Cube, So I just
thought it would just kind of bean impactful kind of tie in with the
comic itself here, and I lovethe Vader is still pissed off later and
(15:28):
his troops silently in the background arelike, ah, let's just kind of
hang back here a little bit becauseVader's not happy, So stop going to
the next one now. So thisis based on Lando becoming a guard for
jab of the Huts. This isthat kind of moment where you know,
we later see him in Return ofthe Jedi and how he becomes Tamtaille Screege.
(15:54):
So it's another kind of fun comic. This is obviously in one of
the kind of like the younger stuff, so it's in Star Wars Kids twelve
magazine, and the Gamblers Quest isa kind of is also an alternative version
for this is one of the examplesof how he becomes the guard. And
then the other example is in theBounty Hunters Scoundrels Wages by March Schultz,
(16:18):
and that's the dark Horse version.Lano Calizi in Everyone's Favorite Baron, under
the guise of Tamptia Screege, initiateshis plan to win a position within Jabba's
palace in Gambler's Quest in Star WarsKids twelve by Robert Rath to rescue his
old buddy. In four a byLando risks his life to ingratiate himself as
a guard by competition, his refereeand judge is Boba Fette, with endless
(16:44):
challenges like barely making the leap ofdoom over the rancor pit, playing hollow
chest with a palace champ, aWookie who always wins, steal a helmet
from a sleeping Gamarian, a startto finish test in the Jinland's waist to
steal the eggs, and a nappingcrate dragon so Abba can have breakfast to
finally be one of three who bowsdown to Jabba to watch the others be
(17:04):
sacrificed. With a little bit ofluck, Hans rescue will be easy with
help from friends. Of course,I feel silly that I accidentally left out
Chewy in that last kind of imageshuffle there, but he's loved, of
course. I do think it's prettyfunny that, like Bobo was also the
(17:27):
judge, and you know, soit's very it's a guitarian of the characters.
It's very intimidating for Lando. Hehad to do a lot of work
to become a guard there. Youknow, Jabba obviously is used to any
kind of person coming in there tryingto get a job for either good intentions
or malicious intentions. And Jabba doesn'ttrust anyone because he was a hut and
(17:48):
that's just what they do. Somoving on to the next one. This
one's kind of another fun one.It made me laugh reading this coming for
the first time, just because it'skind of silly in the sense where it's
c three Po being mean and hisinsults are not mean, but to see
(18:11):
three Pio their means. Let's checkthat out. On an Alliance mission to
yag Duel and eight a b Y, the Imperials track down the Millennium Falcon
in both the audio and comic bookThe Mixed Up, joyed by John Whitman
and Rider Windham, giving it ablast that shocks three Po. When Han
asks him to check the computer,He responds Han needs a bowl of orchids
and a swift kick and calls Rtwo Handsome, stopping on Nar Shoudah to
(18:33):
repair a three Po who's bored ofall of them. He swears he won't
speak in the cantina, but comparesa patron's ears to a sailboat, then
taunts the smugglers into chasing R twoand him in a stolen skiff, telling
R two to fly better up awall, blasting off world with a new
set of language circuits. The actionsof three Pio attracted the imps, who
calms them. Lea gets three pojabbering that they want to be tortured and
(18:55):
enjoy a horrible death, confusing theimps enough to get away to meet the
Evans, but only after getting repaired. First of all, the whole insult
of like bowl of orchids, likewhat a what a very sweet insult.
It's just like it's the child isinnocences C three bo that we're just so
accustomed to. And then you knowit's mean that he calls are too handsome,
(19:19):
because when is he ever nice toR two? So the fact that
he's nice to R two is what'smean. Then of course these means him.
Later when you know R two's drivingthem and he's like, you know,
take a turn here, I coulddo you know, you should be
doing better driving and then drive straightup the wall, saving the day as
R two always does Leah's idea ofgetting three Bo to talk to the ams
(19:44):
to kind of confuse them. Again, I think that was kind of a
funny but yet brilliant thing for herto do. And Han, She's just
like, what why would you drussthree po of all people? And She's
like, no, no, no, like something's wrong with him. It's
going to confuse and like that's alwayskind of the best defense is to confuse
your enemies, right, Like there'sa Forest Griffin quote that I can't say
(20:08):
on here, but if you knowthe quote only because it's not an appropriate
quote, you'll know it. Andit's kind of along the lines of,
like he was getting attacked, hesaid something so confusing that these eight guys
in the alley went we're out ofhere and walked away. So it's that
kind of concept, which I thinkis really funny. So now that I
(20:30):
kind of moved away and I decidedto do a full kind of arc series.
So I liked the Extinction arc thatwe get and it's a two part
series featured in the Tales one andtwo. Let's just keep that up here,
And it starts with Marrow Jade's amission that she had kind of stumbled
(20:53):
across and gave the information to Palpatine, and Palpatine turns it around gives us
to Fader. So it's actually astory where you get Mara in a little
bit, but then it becomes Vader. So I like that. We have,
you know, another moment of MaraJade, especially sence. This is
a moment where she's working for theEmpire still versus when we see and we
love her later on when she's youknow, getting involved with Luke and then
(21:15):
i'll you know, and the motherof Luke's child. So let's take a
listen. In around zero to onebby, Palpatine calls Invader to alert him
of a surviving Jedi in the arcExtinction from the comics Tales one and two,
many years passed since Order sixty six. Palpatine reveals another pawn at his
(21:37):
disposal, Mara Jade, the Emperor'shand. Mara Jade, capable and resourceful,
encountered a man trying to escape custodyon Quad who claimed a smuggler that
whispered of the Dark Woman in theOuter Rim. Vader insists on taking the
mission to an objecting Mara Jade, who, according to him, had meager
Jedi training, not capable of thejob. Palpatine, having enough of his
(21:59):
minions, wants the Rebels hope tobe made extinct before they find the Jedi,
as signs Vader to the task toa relenting Mara, he after all,
knows something about the destruction of aJedi. You'll notice them that I
have, you know, a realthundercue. When I was recording it,
there was a thunderstorm going on,so I thought I couldn't really remove the
(22:21):
sound of thunder in the background, though, I just you know, it
was very ominous at the same moment. So the Extinction art was written by
Ron Mars and Ink Penciler's Claudio Castellini. The letter is Michael Taylor color as
Guy Major, and I love howthis comic is drawn. It's so stunning,
it's so beautiful. I think it'sa really interesting story because you get
(22:47):
this kind of Jedi who's you know, the Dark Woman who's fallen, not
necessarily fallen, but she's a selfexile Jedi who survived Order sixty six,
and Vader's task to find her,and she's super powerful, the Dark Woman,
So we will find out a littlebit more about her so this is
(23:07):
him hunting down the Jedi exile. In the comic Extinction, Vader travels to
hunt a former Jedi in his landa class shuttle to the fifth Planet,
on a world full of wondrous floraand fauna in the Cofusian System he has
sensed. Immediately, leaving the stormtroopersbehind, Vader begins his blind search.
The Dark Woman, a once Jedi, bids her friends farewell and they heed
(23:30):
her warning. As Vader gets closerand closer, the woodlands swallow up Vader,
who's naturally led to a glen tofind a lone beautiful flower, a
dying species. Startled, Vader turnedto find one of the last of its
kind, the Dark Woman. FormerJedi master and councilmember Anya Kuro now his
prey once Master to John and tellsthe respected mysterious Jedi also discovered Kiati Monday
(23:55):
as a young ling and later aNarshada found an apprentice or a sing who
later believe sold her to pirates andturned assassin, this leading to her own
exile and turned to the dark.So what's interesting about the Extinction arc is
it continues this story of the DarkWoman, who's this Jedi self exile who
(24:17):
had taken or Sing as an apprenticeand failed and put herself into that exile
during the Clone Wars. But she'slike, but she's a super powerful Jedi,
like she you know, she haddiscovered Kiati Mundy, she discovered or
saying she had the ability to bendlight around her, so she could actually
become invisible. She could control plants, and in the Extinction arc that's actually
(24:41):
the first time that's ever seen thatforceability. She could actually pass through objects,
so that's really interesting, and shecould teleport through the force. So
like, again, she's this incrediblypowerful Jedi, and it's no wonder that
she's such a threat to Palpatine andto Vader because she has these ability is
that they don't they don't necessarily haveor or are able to control. And
(25:07):
you know, like having this Jediwho survived Order sixty six just kicking around
for all these years on Confusion five, you know, it's she's content to
be hidden and secreted away. Butshe was also kind of in a way
waiting for Vader, So that's somethingwe will see when she starts talking to
him. What also is of noteabout her as a character is like she's
(25:32):
actually really brutal as an instructor. So that's why, like John Antillies,
he actually leaves the Jedi Order becauseof her training and teachings. She was
willing to teach Ashra Redhead a littlebit, and you see them kind of
fight in one of the one ofthe books I'm Sorry, one of the
comics, and like and like there'sanother quote about her, like by even
(25:56):
pl which she's you know, she'skind of relying on like the darkness and
her teaching our brutal and disturbing, and Mace Wind was like I thought she
was dead, you know, soyou know, typical Mace just to be
kind of blunt to the point. And then later she would hunt with Kiati
(26:17):
Mundy, Ashradhead and Adi Galia andthey would go to Sorry, I forgot,
I forget what world it is.You know, if I had my
co host Kyle, he could remindme. But they go to this world
and they hunt down or a thing. But of course during a four storm
and some like asteroids basically crashing down, she's able to get away. And
(26:37):
Aura is significant in this moment becauseshe had killed Asherad's father on Tatchuween,
so like she's a huge threat becauseshe's very capable killing Jedi. But this
was in thirty b by, soobviously a little bit different timeline of this
story. So continuing on with theshort Vader and comic exting at last found
(27:00):
the dark woman Anyakuro in the Cofusiansystem. Pauses to allow the ones Jedi
to monologue in comparing the near extinctflower to that of the ending of the
Jedi. Extinction is the natural order, Vader firms, weak are replaced by
the strong. She continues the lessonthat species can buy their time and bloom
when least expecting a seed, longBury can still sprout fruit. Vader reminds
(27:25):
her there's no turning from the darkside of all people. She knows that
lighting his lightsaber, the two clashwhen she calls it a cowards path.
Hero counters a worthy opponent, evencommits a move from his past. He
claims an excellent disciple should be tothe dark side, though more seductive,
not more powerful. The dark sideis, but the positive can be tenacious.
(27:49):
So you see there in the endand in the beginning of the next
video that I'm about to queue up. That's when she starts to kind of
get the plants of the world toto take down Vader. It's kind of
like that only choice she really hasin that moment, We're not really choice
like she's because she's so powerful. She knows other ways to defeat him,
(28:12):
and what she does is well whatyou're going to see next. In the
fierce battle against Vader, the onceJedi Caro, using the Force, moves
the tree's roots to class Vader tight. As Kiro laments Palpatine's loss of a
pawn, Vader still gets free, appearing like the galaxy's version of death.
(28:33):
He pounces as there's no place aJedi could run that he won't follow.
The vicious fight flows into a waterfall. Cairo disarms Vader, but in Turney
overpowers her and then flings her aside. Trapped by a tree, Vader begins
to cut with his blade, endingthe hunt with just a grasp, and
pulls the tree down to crush theDisgrace Master. With a final taunt,
she reminds him there is an escapefrom the dark side. As Vader brings
(28:56):
down his lightsaber, inspecting her emptyrobes, a blue light bays him as
Anna Curo, now turned by Corpio. Remember Skywalker, she illuminates even a
faint light shines brightest surrounded by darkness, cutting through her one last time,
Vader turns to the flower and crushesthe last of its kind, ending the
extinction arc, completing mar Jade's mission. I love that line. I think
(29:22):
it's it's such a beautiful way todescribe what Vader needs to hear at that
moment. So originally though the comicwas a bit different, so it the
context where it was. You know, she's giving a quote of the darkness.
It said, Anakin, I seeyou within you the power to release
(29:42):
yourself from the dark side, andhe goes, no, I seek no
release. Anakin no longer exists.Where they change it to do you now
see your might is nothing compared tomine? Remember Skywalker, even a faint
light shines through brightest when it issurrounded by darkness. I think that's such
a more beautiful poetic way to describeit. And you know, the whole
(30:04):
I seek no release. Yeah,I'm glad they got rid of it.
So I mean it's it changed that. That's not really clear why they change
it. There's some ideas that couldhave kind of like it follows the strong
resemblances of of episode three novel. But of course I don't know, No
(30:26):
one knows. I don't know, but I love that arc. It was
really great. Um you'll see thatI also included the plant kind of image
back in the Galactic Museum display. One thing I forgot to mention about the
Galactic Museum display this they actually blamedthe mass deaths of e Walks on the
(30:47):
Rebels as well, which so there'syou know, all these e Walks on
display looking cuter and which is reallyfunny because we all know that they're rather
vicious in comparison. Moving on tothe next short this series, it's a
two parter this short and I lovedloved, loved, loved, loved,
(31:08):
loved this ark. So this isall about Leah and Tarkan. So it's
kind of like her getting revenge onJargon twice. Let's check it out in
Star Wars Tales eleven by Jason Short, The Princess Diaries is a comic based
on Leah's adolescent journal entries on Alderonset between nine to one. Bby frustrated
(31:32):
with the primping and posturing, andshe's forced to endure by her adopted family.
She mourns the loss of her realmother, betting that her mother would
not make her behave like her rancorof nanny, Madame Vesta, let her
eat how she wants, even dancein public how she wants. Bale's very
proud young Leah caught off her hair, only to be given wigs. Dinner
parties could be a drag unless shehelped. Fun boys could only be met
(31:53):
with Winter acting as her double.Still, Leah felt like an outsider,
like a piece of her was missing. Meeting Governor Tarkin, he was unimpressed
by her charms, and Leah feltlike death stared at her. After stating
Leah needs weaning, Tarken leaves,so Leia waters her plants, and a
perfectly placed Tarkan being picked up byhis slave Akbar and driver Natasi Dalla.
(32:15):
Lea drops the water balloon to helpchange the galaxy. How funny is that
like she happens to one conveniently havewater boons in her bedroom and to live
near the you know whose bedroom issituated by the exits, so and it's
perfectly blazed. Let's just be realthe fact that Natasi Dalla is there,
(32:37):
as well being the the driver forTarken. I just like I love that
little just kind of like add inbecause we know later on that she revered
Tarkan of course said things and thingslike that. Leia of course like she's
got that typical kind of Leia attitudefrom all throughout her childhood, and I
(33:00):
love seeing it in this moment. So the Princess Diarist is actually named after
the Princess Diary movie that was kindof came I would at the same time
with Anne Hathaway if you guys rememberthat one. So writer Jason Hall,
penciler Chris Bruno, letteris Steve Detro, colorist Dave Nostelle, and obviously it's
dark Horse Comics. So let's watchpart two of Princess Diarist when Tarkan gets
(33:28):
water blooned by Leia again. Ah, she's so great. I love Leia.
I mean, who doesn't our galacticprincess at age thirteen, Princess Leia
annoyed it in another lavish court partywhile the galaxy starves overhears others ridiculing a
servant girl that asked to try anaddress using diplomacy, Leah mixed the expensive
(33:51):
dress a hand me down. Leahvolunteers and food kitchens and studies hired in
university, she'd begins training with weaponsMaster Jill's Duane under her father's foresight.
By seventeen, Leiah discovers Senator Bailis secretly part of an alliance to restore
the Republic. Leiah hates the Empirefor reasons like how they treat aliens and
women. She swears to make themall proud. When elected the youngest senator,
(34:15):
Leah tells Bail her hopeful intentions tohelp the rebellion. Once again,
meets with now Grand mof Tarkan,to whom she apologizes for the water balloon
incident, and he hopes Leah won'tbe a thorn in the Empire's side.
Tarkan states everyone gets what they deserve. He takes his leave, as does
Leiah, to water plants and anyonebelow. Tarkan soaked again, swears to
(34:35):
return to alder On very very soon. It makes you kind of think that
Targan destroys alder On because Leah dropsa water balloon on him twice, Like,
obviously that's not quite the reason, but you know, I can see
why he has no issue pulling thetrigger and destroys the whole world because he
(35:00):
got dropped a water balloon on twice. Like, I like also that there
that there's a nod to Winter inthis, and you know, we can't
forget that Winter is one of theones who helped raise Anakin, you know,
and that was something that Tom Beachhad also written about. But yeah,
(35:21):
what a great comic. I lovedthat she you know, threw a
drink on that rich girl's dress, just because like like that's what you get
for making fun of someone who doesn'thave your you know, your life opportunities
because your family's wealth and things likethat. Like, you know, it's
a very typical, kind of likepreteen thing to do, but it's also
(35:44):
just like a hilarious laya thing todo at the same time. So continuing
on with our shorts and the reviewof all the ones that I've made so
far, so in this one Wedgeand Tillies, he watches his parents die.
I found this a really heartbreaking moanin the the x Wing series of
comics, the Rogue Squadron comics, where you know, like Wedge has so
(36:07):
much tragedy in his life, likehis parents die. Uh, he had
a girlfriend who got killed and thenyou know it inspired him to become the
rebel that he that he becomes, and he's such an important character that you
know, like I thought, weneed I wanted to highlight this first of
all, um another thing with thethe x wing Roe Squadron comics, just
(36:30):
to just a little kind of expandhis universe of family where he has actually
a famous sister we find out,and that's Style Antilles, but she's known
as Winessa Starflare and Whinessa. Sheactually meets Suntra Fell on Corressant and she's
like this beautiful, you know, blonde, you know, very obviously Star
(36:53):
Wars comic book drawn kind of woman, and you know, she falls instantly
for Center Fell, and you knowhe's this kind of noble you know,
fighting for the Empire pilots, youknow, very handsome. And I actually
have a little bit of a featureof the two of them together at the
Galactic Museum, because that's an outingthat they do together. Of course,
(37:16):
you know, Whinessa or Sayal, she actually of course is the mother of
Jagged Jagged Fell, who we alllove and then who in the future becomes
the Emperor thanks Sloop Skywalker and eventuallymarries Jana Solo. So there is some
happiness for that family. But let'swatch the beginning. In the comic X
(37:37):
wing Roe Squadron Fandom Affair, Wedgeand Tillies and four Aby comes face to
limpid face with his parents, KillerLoca Hast during New Republic negotiations on Wrist
Loca and the Bone Star Pirate Woreand four Bby attack the fueling station family
business of Jagged and Zeena Antillies atGastrata Ignited fuel erupted as Booster Terre on
(37:59):
the pulsar skate takes away Wedge froma certain death. His parents heroically remain
aboard, fighting the blaze and selfsacrifice, leaving Wedge to watch flames ripped
through as they give a final goodbyeto their son, saving hundreds of lives.
Wedge, silently standing, is toldby Booster that the pirates deliberately blew
up the station. Wedge knows ofan old Z ninety five aboard and boost
(38:21):
their hands in a flight helmet. The pirate ship not far away was malfunctioning
from parasitic space cretters. Wedge statesno police are needed and doesn't miss a
shot has escaped, but the onlyvac suit aboard and here's what's name in
the calm is captured by a parasite. I'm happy that, you know,
his killer, his parents killer, gets some sort of justice by having this
(38:45):
thing live on him. I haven'tdone the next part of the series,
but if you guys don't know whathappens is he kind of has to,
you know, broker this deal withthis guy. The Roe squadron is face
thrown into this position of where they'reunable to successfully help blah blah blah blah
blah. Long story short, Wedgegets checked into like a prison cell.
(39:08):
The guy makes fun of him.In the end, Wedge does eventually kill
this guy, but I just haven'tshown it in the short. The tragedy
of this moment is the fact thatyou know, his parents' self sacrifice again
and he witnesses it and they're talkingto him throughout. I'm like, what
(39:30):
a horrific, horrific experience for achild. And then I love that Booster
Terek. Of course it's like, well there's a you know, might be
a ship over there, and letshim go to hunt down this guy.
And of course for years he thoughthe had succeeded until he comes face to
face again with him, poor Wedge. So jumping back in time, So
(39:54):
going now to the dawn of theJedi, and of course, you know
a lot of again we have tothank Tom Beach for the inclusion of like
or the creation of older timelines andthings like that. But I thought,
let's talk about the first appearance ofthe lightsaber, because it's not actually a
Jedi technology. And that's something thatyou know, I think we tend to
(40:17):
forget, is that they usurped thetechnology from somewhere else, and they got
it from the Racotton. So thisis on Tython, ten thousand years after
the Tho Your Arrival. The comicarc down of the Jedi Force Storm saw
the first use of the early lightsaber, created by the Racotton Infinite Empire,
(40:39):
A highly intelligent species of dark Sideusers dominating worlds like Tattooine, tastifying,
force sensitive forcehound Jesh travels to theDeep Core in twenty five seven UND ninety
three b by with balance disrupted,A four storm occurs on Tython. Aus
three Jedi journeyers are each scent avision of the man and armor as a
ship crashes shake Coda on her rankher butch Secnis breath a full blood,
(41:02):
Sith and Tasha Rio drawn nearer tothe first new ship in an age and
near miss, the three locate theescape pod and sense darkness outwalks death.
They mean no harm. Jess callsthem liars. With drawn blades, he
quickly slices them one by one.Tasha relies on her hands but is stopped.
Jess, too powerful to subdue,is challenged enough as Secnis grabs the
(41:22):
blade but fails to turn it onthrows it to Shay, who succeeds.
Jes, outnumbered, flees on Tythonwith a three to follow. So I
love the introduction of the Fourthhound,Jesh. He's got like that fun kind
of crazy personality of someone who's obviouslybeen in complete isolation his whole life and
(41:45):
being poisoned by Eagle. What youdo see in the series, of course,
is that you know in the endhe does kind of redeem himself,
because that is a theme of StarWars. So this the Dawn of the
Jedi. For Storm is a DarkHorse comic written by John Ostander penciler Gander
(42:07):
Sema, who is a fantastic artistInchor Dan Parsons letter at Michael Heisler,
color sweest Zeobia and the cover artist, of course is Jander Sema and the
editor is Randy Stradley. So continuingon with the second episode, the trio
are still hunting down the Forcehound Jesh, pursuing the Riccatton Foreshound Jesh. The
(42:31):
three Jedi Journeyers enter the Abyss andare met with dark side visions, but
are able to conquer them. Jeshalso ensnared sees those he's killed while real
terrors of Taython attack and he issaved by Sechno's wrath. The creature fights,
and Jesh suppose they only help tokill him. After Shakota, unable
to light the forsaber, returns itto Jesh, who leaves despite Scha's anger
(42:52):
at his expected betrayal. Secretly,he watches the creature take out Tasha Ryo.
He is confused as each Jedi protectthe fallen until Shay shows no fear
and he feels something he turns tohelp. He is the nexus of the
fourth storm that draws in Masters, now killing the creature, his anger enhances
the storm to quench its power. The Master's focus, but SHA's master is
(43:14):
killed. Shay lights the saber withanger and attacks Jesh permits her to eat
his heart. After his death, with her standing over this odd stranger,
she yields. Finally he turns tothe light. So again there's kind of
that character of like, you've you'vedefeated me, you can now eat my
heart. You've get you get thehonor, and she's like, stranger,
this is not our way. Imean, it's not really anyone saying what's
(43:40):
great about the series is, youknow, we get the lot of the
early kind of Jedi, the Jedi, And what I like about it is,
well, I have a theory. So Tython, which first appeared in
the Dearth Bain trilogy by Drew Comparison. Sorry, so Tython. The name
(44:00):
itself actually first appeared in Star WarsNew Hope Draft number two, so in
the Adventures of Star Killer as takenfrom the Journal of Wills Saga one the
Star Wars so it's in the nineteenseventy four draft, and later it was
then used by Drew Comparison in theDarth Bain trilogy. As you know,
(44:21):
that's where he has Bain has totravel into the Deep Core to track down
the Sith holocron for Abelia dar Zoo, a former Sith who was killed on
Tython, and she was the onewho had created the nano that nanovirus that
basically had techno beasts and those youknow, creatures that were still kind of
alive. I would say that Bainhas to ultimately fight and destroy in order
(44:45):
to get the Sith Holocron. SoI have this theory that I'm not sure
if anyone has put this together before, but if for listeners that know,
I'm a huge fan of Greek mythologyand there's a story that I'm just going
to quickly share and it'll kind ofmake sense in a moment. So the
Greek goddess eos So the goddess ofDawn, she mistakenly wants upon a time,
(45:09):
had a secret affair with Aries, the god of war. And as
everyone knows, Aphrodite and Aries we'rea huge item. So if you mess
with a man that Aphrodite is fondof, you're gonna get cursed. So
Achos she gets cursed and basically hasyou know, bad luck with all the
men that she meets and she loves. So she meets this mortal known as
(45:32):
Tithonus, and Tithonus, you know, he's very handsome and things like that,
and they fall madly love as soonas they meet. They actually basically
take each other's hands the second theysee each other and start walking together.
She later goes to Zeus and asksZeus for immortality for her lover because she
(45:52):
wants, you know, she's finallyhappy. She wants him to be her
husband. And while they live inthe Palace of the Sun, and of
course Zeus, being the typical Zeus, which was in one of his moods
because of Aphrodite's curse, he says, sure, I'll give Tythonis immortality,
but you'll be back to thank mesoon. And you know, a couple
(46:15):
of decades later, she's aos isback at Zeus's door because she's discovered that
Tythonis has a gray hair, andyes he had immortality, but she never
had asked for keeping his youth. So Tythonis actually ages, and she doesn't
have the heart to tell him atfirst, and he ages and ages and
(46:37):
ages and ages so much that he'sbasically like the former remnant of himself,
you know, like he's just theshell of old man, and Aos doesn't
have the heart to kill him,and she can't undo something that another god
has done, so like she can'tkill him. In the end, she
does decide to change him to agrasshopper and he's able to like hop off
(46:58):
in the night and like no Aphroditehas her last laugh basically because Aos is
single again. So the reason Ibring all this up is the geologist Albert
Apple actually named a time stratigraphic timeas the Tithonian period, so it's known
(47:19):
as the dawn of the Cretaceous period. So that's kind of his nod to
you know, Aos and to herlover that he's at the dawn of this
kind of time. So going withthat in my crazy theory that Tython being
emulated from this, from tithonus frombeing at the dawn of the Jedi and
(47:43):
in the deep Core. So that'smy crazy theory. You guys can feel
free to write me about it,talk about it a bit more if you're
more interested, and let's move on. So the next series I have on
here is The What If Infinities.I've got about seven episodes on there.
I'm not going to cover that.So the Infinity's new hope arc is something
(48:06):
that Kyle and I are actually goingto talk about another episode, So if
you want to check this out, check this out. But for the time
being, I'm going to skip overthose and I'm going to go right on
to when Kyle Kattern and his partnerfight the USO Bong In Star Wars Tales
twenty one, Kyle Katarn and hiswife Jan actually not WiFi stand corrected rescue
(48:29):
fillagers from Warrior Uzon Bong Invaders andthe Peace Brigade in around twenty eight a
by done with a successful duplicity,as the Stormtroopers were with them all along.
They round up the Vong into apoorly secured old building. Later,
John comments on his gallant cape removaland the jetty flayer he always has.
Kyle brings up Luke's son's Ben andshe notes it's the second time children are
mentioned and says no to marriage.Kyle discusses how they loved each other most
(48:52):
of their lives, she noting ifthey are to be the next mar Luke
myriach is not done out of fearof future, but of love. Then
the Colm goes off, the Vongescaped, and a rampage in the village,
Jan already in action. Kyle, rushing out, saves Lieutenant Palen,
finding a van with Jan in hand, who tosses her in a cell.
Kyle attacks and throws the lightsaber intothe cage and Jan burns the locks.
The two brawl, but Kyle andJack's a bomb in the von, kicking
(49:14):
the explosion away. The dashing Jedihis words save the day like she had
many times before, and it wasstill no to marriage. So this incident
occurred on Ord Cedra and actually isjust before the New Jedi Order Force Heredick
Remnant Forceredick two Remnants by Sean Williamsand Shane Dix. So that's number fifteen
(49:36):
of the New Jedi Order books.I love this kind of short story because
it's you get that whole people aretrying to like with the Jedi, you
know, they're they're still trying tohave relationships, and I like what Jan
says. It's like, you know, we don't want to be the next
Mara and Luke. You know,we don't want to rush into things,
not that Mara and Luke did,but she doesn't want to be like the
(49:58):
next power couple, I guess inher idea in the sense where like,
maybe because we're at war, thisis why we should get married, but
I want to do this out oflove. And then they kill some bong
and you know all that kind offun stuff. I like the story.
I'm a huge fan of Angio,so I was happy to do this short
(50:20):
and get this a little bit moreattention to. So this was written by
Nathan Pete, Butler, penciler JamesReya's Letter, Michael Heisler, Chlers Michael
Atilla, and the cover artist wasthe Burmaggio Burmijo. Sorry and our final
short today, that's right, willyou almost done? Thank you for everyone
for sticking around with me as Italk to myself. And this one is
(50:44):
actually a short that's based on theThe Tales from Moss Isley Kntina by Martha
and Tom Beach. The short storyI really like this one because it's all
about Grido, So let's check thatout. Grido's backstory was written by married
(51:05):
couple Martha and Tom Beach in theBantam book Tails from the Moss Eisley Cantina
and who have both passed away thisyear. It was adapted as a web
strip by Pablo Hidalgo in four bby. One day, playing with his younger
brother Pequiduc, Grido and covers threeships hidden in a cave near by their
village. Filled with a classic greensuit. Grido and tends the fine to
be his His mother, Nila, realizes he has seen the ships as he
(51:27):
unconsciously carved food into their shape.Neilah explains that they came from Rhodia,
two years after he was born, from fleeing an evil clan leader Navic the
Red, who waged war and theweaker Tetsa's clan. Grido's senior had been
a bounty hunter, and young Gridois intrigued. The elder was murdered with
an axe in his back. Thesurvivors fled in three ships. That night,
Grido spots Navic the Red coming tofinish the job. His calls,
(51:49):
alerting his mother. She begs himto run as the explosions rip around them.
Grido's uncle Knock organizes them and thesurvivors, Yetigan flee. With so
few of them left, they goto the moon Nash starting on his bounty
hunter path. So I really wantedto highlight this this short story because both
Martha and Tom passed away this year. So Tom passed away on Valentine's Day
(52:12):
and Martha passed away on September eleventh. They were both I'm not sure about
Martha, but I know Tom wasone of those authors that Disney had not
been paying for a while. Sothere had been a campaign for money for
Martha, but that their child, their early daughters, was set up.
So if you guys want to stilldonate to that, Like, I'm not
(52:34):
sure who would go to, butmaybe the money would go to their to
their daughter. What's fun about thisstory is kind of like like father,
like son. Grito's dad was abounty hunter and then Grito becomes a bounty
hunter himself as well. And onemore thing to note about this is I
like that this was done by Pabloas a web strip. It used to
(52:57):
be available on Star Wars dot comand of course everything had been removed,
but you can find this webstrip stillavailable. Thank you to Joe Bontier No,
so thank you so much Joe forputting it on Star Wars timeline dot
net. So you guys, ifyou want to check that out and check
out Joe's amazing, amazing, sorryarchive of everything that Disney has removed,
(53:21):
go to his website and check thatout. So thanks everyone for joining me
