(00:02):
You're listening to Legends Library. Nowhere's your host. He's a mountaineer and
Kyle Rawlins. Hi, everybody.I'm Lisa, and I'm Kyle, and
(00:24):
I'm Catherine, and you are watchingand listening to Legends Library. We are
a podcast dedicated to the Legends lineof the Star Wars books and the expanded
universe. Today's episode, we haveI guess Katherine back on the show,
and we're here to talk more aboutLegends con and you know, we're coming
down to the wire and it's justweeks away. Guys, I'm I'm excited
(00:46):
obviously, but today we're here forkind of a special reason again, and
it's to talk about a kickstarter thatwe've started. So if Katherine as our
executive director, if you could talka little bit more about that with us.
Yeah, well let's kick off myvisuals too. Catherine's always prepared with
(01:07):
a lovely yes. So, asLisa said, we are getting really close.
Um, September ninth and tenth,it'll be here before we know it.
Last time I was on and wewere that was December. I'm pretty
sure, um two, that's true. Yes, Yes, the last time
(01:27):
we like extensively talked about the convention. Yeah, um yeah, so so
much has changed since then, UM, and everything is just chruggling along really
smoothly. Overall. We're having alot of great guests. UM. The
planning of various events that are goingto be happening are it's all going very
well. Ticket sales are going well. UM. But we are doing a
(01:52):
kickstarter because we are a first yearevent, so funding is you know,
not it's hard to start that off. And we have more guests interested.
UM, We've we've had actually peoplecoming to us, yeah, coming,
dusting that they want to come,um, and we want to say yes
(02:13):
to them, but that's not fullyin the budget for us. UM the
way is as much as we wouldlike. So UM. That is a
large part of the reason that we'redoing this kickstarter. UM. Another really
important reason for the kickstarter is thatthe ticket sales service that we use um
it it holds on to twenty percentof our sales until after the event.
(02:38):
UM, which is you know, each ticket service has its own little quirks
and stuff, and this is justit's one and different something else. It
would have been some other thing, you know, that would have been just
as obnoxious and terrible um. Butbecause of that, you know, it's
it's good to have money now ratherthan after the convention, because all of
(02:59):
the bills are do before the conventionfor the most part, like the twenty
percent that's coming in after is notgoing to help us. Every everything that'll
that'll feed most likely that will bedonated straight to the Peter Mayhey found Nation,
which is one of our other updatesis that we have a charitable partner
now. Yeah. Yeah, Soone of the guidelines that we received from
(03:21):
Lucasfiom Fan Relations for Star War Warsfan events is that all proceeds have to
go to our charitable costs, andwe have chosen the Peter Mahey Foundation.
It was founded by the Lanes toPeter and Ange Mayhew. I've worked with
them before through the costume club things. They've always they help us out with
stuff, and we help them outa lot with various charitable causes. They're
(03:43):
a really great organization. They Ijokingly refer to them as like Garia charitable
work because they really what they dobest is coming in when somebody's having a
crisis, typically within the Star Warsfan community, who is just like out
of options, desperate and come inand are able to financially solve the issue
(04:10):
of you know, their kid needsthis surgery or their kid needs this um
medical device and they just can't affordit, because that's the state of our
healthcare system. And it's really importantto like, it was important to Peter
and Angie because Peter with his giantism, like that's that is a very significant
(04:30):
medical problem that requires a lot ofsupport, and so it is it was
something that was very personal to them, and Angie just passed away like while
we were in the process of workingthis out with the Peter May Foundation,
and it really it's such a lossto our community. She was such a
bright spark and so loving and givingand just any time that somebody needed something,
(04:56):
she would do her very best tomake it happen. But the foundation
is continuing like without her, likeif this will not be the end of
it, um the family that shebuilt around it, And I don't mean
you know, like legal you knowmembers of the family, which is like
the people that she took under herwing who are still working, you know
(05:18):
for still volunteers for the organization, like they will keep it going and they
will continue doing that work. Soit's really, I'm really happy that we're
able to donate our proceeds to them, But before we get to that point,
we have to have a convention. Before we have a convention, we
have to finish funding the convention.Yeah, and the Kickstarter would help us
(05:38):
a lot with that. UM.One of the one of the big payments
that is coming due for us isas July fourteenth, we owe the venue
ten thousand dollars and we're like,we're almost there in terms of having that
money ready to spend, but thethree thousand would be really nice just to
(06:00):
have offer and all of that.Like the three thousand dollars our goal for
Kickstarter UM, and it kickstarters allor nothing. So we're we have a
little bit over a thousand dollars umsocials now of recording UM. And if
we don't reach three thousand in thenext ten days as at the time of
(06:24):
recording and munchure exactly when those areposted, UM, we don't get anything
and nobody gets charged. So it'snot like the money just you know,
goes to Kickstarter, like if theyyour card won't get charged it, but
we won't get anything either. UM. So yeah, so guys, yeah,
that's why we're coming to you listenersand watchers. We just need that
little bit of extra help right now, um, to keep Legends going and
(06:46):
to to help us get going. So yeah, yeah, again you mentioned
the stress on yes are the eventis it is definitely catching traction, but
to be able to say yes tonew guests, which I don't want to
even get people excited for until wecan, but this would be the funding
that we would be like, allright, well it's in the bank,
we're ready, we're set to go, and we can draw up that contract
(07:11):
exactly. Yeah, it's it's exactlythat. And even if you can't make
it to Legends Con, I'd reallyencourage you to consider donating because for one
reason, we are planning to recordall of the panels and we will post
them online, so you will havesome benefits yourself personally, but also just
if you if you believe in thefandom, if you want the fandom to
(07:35):
have a place to continue to growand new things to be created and new
people to come in and feel welcomed, and just for there to be a
space like this, like there hasn'tbeen a in person space for Legends fans
like Celebration. I go to celebration, you know, every time that I
(07:58):
can, and it's great, butit really like the the amount of things
they're they're like specifically for Legends hasreally decreased, um, which you know
understandably like the we won't go intoit. It's very Jedi to like erase
things, so you know, excuseme, all right, we're not going
(08:18):
to get into that either. No, that that would be the Sith.
But okay, no, there builtover a dark side temple. Okay,
okay, okay, we don't needto start this yet. Yeah, but
anyways, um, yeah, sowe we have we have a fantastic list
(08:41):
of guests all yes, we do, and more to come. We have
one more that I'm like, oh, can we say it yet? Like,
no, we can't say it yet. It has the contract has not
been signed yet. We don't saythings until contracts are signed. Yeah.
Uh um yeah, but we wehave two really big names so far.
(09:03):
Um, this this third one thatLisa is wanting to say that will be
like on the same par as hisother two, which are Matthew Stover and
Randy Stradley. Um, I amso excited to meet them. Um.
I've worked with Matthew Stover before.I've interviewed him on line at one point.
Um, I'm really excited to meethim in person. Random. Um,
(09:26):
he reached out to us, whichwas fantastic. Um it's he as
you know, co founder of darkHorse Comics. I love all of like
the everything that stark Horse did, like that is some of my favorite part
parts of the Big spand universe.Um. So really excited for the two
of them. Um, I'm excitedfor everyone. They're all like yeah,
(09:52):
yeah, yeah, Well we'll doa little bit of a chat afterwards.
But for listeners, the graphic onscreen right now, so we have Abel
Fena, Karina Batchko, Baddie Stover, Randi Stralie, Barbara Hambley, and
Sean Stewart. We are missing CraigMiller, who we just announced as well.
Yes, yes, the graphic hasnot been updated in the last week.
But who was Craig Miller for forall the listeners, Yes, so,
(10:16):
Craig Miller is the original director offan Relations at Lucasfilm. Um,
and so I have been talking tolike the third or fourth iteration of him
in um Pete Wilmer who is currentlyin charge. Who is the one who
you know gave us these guidelines andtold us how to you know, be
able to do a Star Wars fanevent without getting a season desist, which
(10:39):
I really appreciate. UM. I'veworked through before partit on events that I've
done within the costume organizations. UM. So Craig Miller was the original director
for Fan relations UM. He wrotethe band of Tracks columns for like the
first two years that that was anassistance. He ran the Star Wars fan
(11:03):
club thing, and what I findfascinating personally is he is the one who
got the archive going for Star Warsdesigns. UM. If you're not familiar
with what a design is or azine, it's pronounced both ways. I've
heard this is a little bit ofa pre internet fandom thing, but they
(11:24):
still definitely are around today. Itis like a fan made magazine basically.
That's where the shortened design or zinecomes from. UM. It would have
people writing both like fiction, nonfiction, art, speculation of future movies.
(11:45):
It's just a really like fascinating likeeach is a very fascinat like to
me is a really interesting piece offandom history, and he got things going
to start an archive of these atLucasfilm UM. And then around like the
time of the Prequels, like asthe popularity like shot upwards, it became
(12:07):
overwhelming UM, and the archive movedaround a little bit. It's currently at
the University of Iowa. In therethey have a special collections of that's terenally
fanzines UM, and that is sponsoredby the Organization for Transformative Works UM,
which is like the main source ofjust hosting a place for transformative works UM
(12:31):
like fanzines UM. So it's youknow, I I'm curious to talk to
Craig about you know, like ifif he ever thought that, you know,
this thing that he was starting wouldend up as part of a you
know, university library collection UM.But it's something that I'm passionate about of
like, you know, preserving fandomhistory UM, because I just really believe
(12:54):
that what fans create is something that'sreally special. So I want to go.
Yeah, it's unique to our brand, in particular because George was so
passionate about celebrating it. Yeah.Yeah, No, it's a m I
was talking to some friends about itwhen we were you know, talking about
Craig Miller and UM. They weresaying, you know, like that would
(13:15):
be so wild like today if somelike media company was like yeah, send
us your fanzines, like just likethe absolute like chaos and like fires that
would break out. But you know, like it's something that I think is
very on brand for Lucas as well, like the museum that he's building,
the Lucas Museum that's being built rightnow in San Francisco. Um. That
(13:41):
is, it's about like narrative art, and a lot of it is sort
of that stuff that is considered morelike lowbrow m or like you know,
an important kind of stuff that greatersociety doesn't necessarily deem were worth preserving.
UM. But I just I findit fascinating. Yeah. Sometimes I want
to go out to University of Iowaand like, you know, pick through
(14:03):
their collection. They're working on digitizingit, um, but you know that's
obviously gonna take a long time.UM, but just just kind of you
know, peel back the layers andsee what the fandom was up to in
nineteen eighty one or whatever. Soyeah, yeah, but yes, talk
about the other guests as well.UM, we said, do you want
to pick one and talk about them? Well, I thought we can go
(14:26):
a little bit more about them.Um towards the end, after we talk
a bit more about the kickstarter, because I want to talk a lot about
it, wil penus and I knowtoo. All right, then we will
move on. Um. Yeah.So for our kickstarter, we have five
tiers of rewards and then we havea couple of special things as well.
(14:46):
UM. So for fifteen dollars,UM, we will send you three stickers,
um anywhere in the world. Ilike the name. Yeah, yes,
yeah, the yes. We cameup with you know, IPE friendly
um names for each of these tiers. So yeah, so in pilot fifteen
dollars three stickers, UM, Ican tell you what the stickers are even
(15:09):
um. I we're not like youknow, posting them online because of IPE
stuff. But um, one ofthem is going to be of baby Ala
Sakura and Tadawan Kumin boss um,inspired by that one comic that is just
the cutest thing to ever exist inStar Wars and like he rescues her from
the Wampa and they're just both stupidcute um. And then the second sticker
(15:37):
will be of the the art thatwe've been using frequently of Reven and Mara
back to back. UM that isbased on two of the Cause players from
our photoshoot. Um, because thatwas one of the one of the other
things we got from Lucasilma was thatthe characters should be fans in costume rather
(16:00):
than the characters themselves. Um.And so it's like, how do we
how do we indicate that, youknow, um graphically so um our art
team who was yeah, rikell Um, he of Punch, should we press
um he did the art for this, and like it's crazy to me to
(16:21):
look at this, like I lookat Lamara and I just I see Alice
the cosplayer, like your face soclear in it. So um, it's
a really great rendition. Um.And they will be a vendor at Legends
Cuts, yes they will. Yes, they make fantastic pins and they have
a couple different lines of Legends ones. They have a new Jedi Order line,
and they have a coatur line, and then they have like scattered um
(16:45):
different ones like Kyle Gatarn and umdrawn and more that I'm just not dash
render. It's a bunch like they'rethey're really they're hardcore fans and they make
quite wonderful things. Um. Butyes, so that is our lowest tier
fifteen dollars road Pilot three stickers.A third sticker UM will be one of
(17:06):
our logo stickers. UM. Atthe thirty dollar level, you'll get the
three stickers. That's Prodigal Night soreven Um you get the three stickers,
and then then also you will bereceiving a art print U. That art
print will be new Jedi Order era. So we've were kind of splitting up
the various eras through this that youget a little bit of everything on the
(17:27):
tiers um and then the next tierup is Grand Admiral Drawn obviously UM that
is fifty dollars and you would receivethe three stickers, the art print and
then also a lanyard for the conventionum that will have Legends con branding on
(17:48):
it. And then also um thereven and Mara art. So where else
are you going to get a revenand Mara lanyard um that you can set
all the time. Definitely, Yeah, it doesn't exist um for all your
collectors out there. Yeah, yes, yes, smooth first ever maybe the
time to seriously yeah um yeah um. And then the next year after fourth
(18:18):
tier sort of the order UM,Jana Solo would be the the who that's
named after that is at seventy dollars. So you get the stickers, the
print, the lanyard, um,and then I'm really excited for this pencil
pouch. Um. As of now, Arikell is doing the art for it.
Um. It's going to be coachor themed. I say as of
(18:41):
now, um because he's getting marriedreally soon. So like we think he'll
like he's yes, most likely hewill be doing it. I will not,
like for sure say that because youknow, he could get busy with
wedding things. Um, but it'sit's in progress, it should be done
like nine certain he will be theonondering the art. So it's going to
be fantastic. Um. And it'sgonna be coach our themed. So that's
(19:03):
gonna be really cool. Um,it says pencil pouch. But like it's
a saber pouch. You can useit for whatever. Um. I typically
use pouches of that size for mylightsaber parts, um for cosplay things I
need. Yeah, like and incrediblypractical. Yeah it's there. There's there's
(19:25):
a lot of little fiddly bits thatcome with lightsabers. Um and yeah,
like it's my saber parts IDs wallet, yeah coin first what yeah, yeah.
Yeah. So definitely, that's that'sgonna be really cool. Um.
And then our top tier one hundreddollars Emperor's hand mar Jaide of course she's
(19:47):
the best. Um who did thesecategories? I know with all the yeah
what what bias? Yeah, there'sthere's a lot of like side users in
here. We know, we wesplit it out. We have we have
the Grand Admiral riff frown and thenthis like a good guy though, Like
(20:11):
I mean really anyway, anyways, hundred dollars love. You get the sticks,
you get the art print, youget the lanyard, you get the
pencil pouch or lightsiper parts couch orwhatever you want to use it for a
pouch, and you'll get a Tshirt that will be exclusive to the kickstarter
(20:34):
backers and those of us who havebeen playing the convention. So really it's
like you get you get the theevent organizers shirt. Really like the number
of people who will be having thiswho are out, like there will be
more of us on the planet.Again, say that again, Catherine,
because there's how many of us onour on our panel? Um yeah yeah,
(20:56):
like there like show of us.Yeah, so so besides us,
if you all want this T shirt, this is the time collectors just saying
just yeah, there's no other wayto get it. We're all to make
an element of whatever we get from. Yeah. Yeah, yeah, so
this will be a very exclusive shirt. Um. It's the front of it
(21:18):
is our logo and the back ofit, UM it says uh coming it's
in like the opening crawl style thing. Um and yeah it says something about
like coming to your galaxy. UMSeptember nineth tenth, twenty three, Burbank,
California, something like that on theback UM based off of like the
the initial like teasers for a NewHope that it was the coming to your
(21:40):
Galaxy blah blah blah. So umit's fun um and yeah it'll it'll be
it'll really great. And then ontop of that, UM, there are
a capital of all the cart rewardsas well. UM we for people who
are it's the for if you haveif you have money to spend, UM,
for five hundred dollars, you canname one of the panel rooms at
(22:06):
our event. Um. And youknow there's some limitations on that like yeah,
family friend, Yeah, it can'tbe dirty. Um, it needs
to be in universe, so itcan't be you know, like your name's
panel room. UM, and ofcourse like it needs to um, it
can't be like um. In additionto it not being your name, it
(22:27):
also can't be like your podcast orwhatever. UM. And that comes from
one of our one of the thingsfrom Lucasfilm is that we can't have sponsorship
that is not of people who arealready like affiliated with Lucasfilm. UM.
So as much as we would loveto be able to have it be like
your podcast stage, UM, wecan't do that. But like you could
come up with you know, likeUM, I don't know, like like
(22:52):
something like the the because there arethere, each panel room is going to
be different. We have one that'sgoing to have audio visual setup, one
that's going to be the stage forthe customer contest and the fashion show and
UM performances, and then the smallerone is going to be kind of like
the community one where are like fanpanels are going to be mostly there.
(23:15):
Um. And there's also a quietroom as well, UM that is also
up for naming. UM. Soyeah, UM, like you could name
the quiet room the remove a thousandfountains if you're not like um so not
against yedi, most of them becomessith anyways, there's good if I if
(23:38):
we had the time, but wedon't because I'm busy. So yeah all
right, Um anyway, uh yeah, so if you have the money to
spend um and want to leave amark on this convention, um, you
(23:59):
know, get a say in whatwe name one of the panel rooms with
quiet rooms. Um, definitely checkthat out. That'll be a lot of
fun. So we're to contact useither way for that. Yeah, yes,
yes, there's like there's a randomamount too, so like if you
can't do fifteen, like you cananswer like, yes, what's the minimum?
(24:19):
A dollar? Yeah, it's somethinglike that, I think. Yeah,
like you can you can put harmwhen you want. Actually the minimum
is a dollar, I know becausesomebody did put somebody you can put a
dollar. There is some like fundthat goes around and gives everybody a dollar,
which is really nice with them.Yeah yeah, give it that train
too. Yeah. Um, I'veseen some misconceptions out there. Again you've
(24:40):
said it already, Catherine. Noneof this money is going to um Disney.
It's all going straight to our charityorganizations that we chose, which is
right foundation. Yeah. So,um, if there's any misconceptions about any
of this. Please do not thinkthat it's going um to this or it
is indeed go into charity. Yeah, and we're all volunteers here as well.
(25:03):
Obviously there are big fans who loveit and that's why we're doing this.
Yeah, yeah, we're not We'renot making money off of this.
Um. You know, this iscoming from just a desire to create the
space for the fandom. Um.And you know, I just I just
want to make something and enjoy it. Um. There's yeah, and everything,
(25:27):
everything will go to the Premare PeterMayhe Foundation. Um. And there's
such a great organization, Like theyreally the lives that they touch, like
they they really just they they swoopin and save the day when people have
no options left to handle like thishorrible traumatic thing that's happened in their lives.
(25:48):
So they're really great. Oh yeah, continuing on though, continuing on,
Yes, Um, so are youcan find our kickstarter Um. You
can just google Kickstarter our Legends content. It should come up, um,
but the full url will be wwwwwwdot kickstarter dot com, Slash Projects,
(26:08):
Slash Legends con Slash Event twenty twentythree. Um. Yes, Well included
in the link to the video.Boy, Yes, yeah, yes,
yeah, thank you yes, UM. And yeah those of you who are
joining us, you know visually forthis. UM. We have some of
the photos from our photoshoot which havebeen UM that was so much fun.
(26:29):
We did that in January, UMin order to get you know, images
to advertise with UM and those ofyou who follow us on our socials.
I've been seeing them since January prettymuch. UM. But it's I'm it's
really like just such a small tasteof what there is to come with the
event. Like we had we hadthirteen coss players for that UM, which
was that that was like the absolutemaximum that we could handle for like a
(26:52):
one day photoshoot kind of thing.UM, it was like we were we
were pretty much like sun up tosun down, like it as soon as
the hours hit, like usable forphotography, to the point that like you
know dusk where we got some coolyou know, like lightsaber lit shots,
but like we full time UM,and yeah, we're just there's gonna be
(27:17):
so many like really talented cosplayers coming, UM who are excited to like pull
these out. There's somebody who Ican't name, UM, but I've been
talking to, UM, somebody wholike was in the fandom doing you know,
cosplay things and whatnot before going professionally. Um, and she's um going
(27:38):
to be one of our judges forthe costume contest, and she's like,
Oh, I'm gonna like break outmy old costumes, like I'm gonna you
know, pull blah, and I'mjust like I'm so excited to see it,
you know. Um and like, you know this the work that she
did with lyricasfilm was you know obviouslylike fifteen twenty years ago, and just
like her career has you know, shot forward since then. And I'm just
(28:00):
really excited. We're going to haveso many really talented people coming out for
this. Think about that everyone too. It's an Expanded Universe fashion show.
Yeah, in particular, yeah particular. Yeah, Lisa, why don't you
talk about the Expanding Universe Fashion Show? Yeah? Um, so we've we've
officially launched it, guys, andwe're asking for anyone who has a love
of you know, designing and loveof Legends and Expanded Universe to to create
(28:26):
kind of your own fashion um andthen showcase it and potentially win a prize.
And the prizes would be like twoto fifty dollars plus swag and then
you know a pass to the party. Um, you don't have to necessarily
be the model on the show. You can you know, bring your own
model as well. But yeah,we're encouraging people just to like really show
off through a love of legend andobviously stay within spirit of the cod as
(28:49):
well. So the applications are nowopen um. You have until August seventh
to get that application put in ifyou want to call. Yeah, like
no, yeah, right, yeah, for for a second, I like
flipped that with the costume con Sorry, the plan is I'm hosting, and
(29:11):
then my plan is to I wasn'tgoing to show this in the video,
but I may as well to bringmy little guests along too. And if
anyone could see what this is,oh wow, I'm Natthew mcdeff face.
All right, it's my death Starpuppet who goes with my Darth Vader outfit
(29:36):
and I scare children in it.It's really funny. The death the Darth
Vader costumers also like it's the there'sthis very like dark joke that goes around
and just like the troop's not overuntil Vader child cry, like yeah,
it happens. Like there was alot of them they saw me on the
weekend and they would just like shiftsideways and like wouldn't keep their eyes off
(30:00):
me. They're just like, yeah, I see you, and I'm going
this way. Yeah. Yeah,Yeah, that's awesome. It's gonna be
great. M So please donate,Please help us make um this event you
know even better. Um. Themore money that we have upfront, the
(30:21):
more that we can do things withit. Like you know, a lot
of people for you know, ourticket sales are doing really well. Um,
but we know just from plastic experienceof events, people don't like buy
tickets months in advance from like themajority of people do not purchase tickets months
months in advance. And I getbecause you're not sure if you're gonna make
(30:41):
it or not, blah blah blahthose kinds of things. But for things
like bringing in guests, we haveto know, you know, like what
our budget is going to be.We can't be bringing people in, you
know, from the other side ofthe country. You know, like a
month before the event, we're like, hey, you know, like we
definitely have tons of money, let'sdo this that it doesn't it doesn't work
(31:03):
like that, or they have theirown schedules UM. So this kickstart,
we're really hoping that it completes andwe get the money from it. UM,
so we're able to bring in somemore guests who have you know,
reached out to us and want tocome, and you know, we want
to make it happen. UM.But it's it's expensive. And this um
for those of you who are lookingat this visually, UM, this slide
(31:26):
kind of breaks down like what differentdonation amounts do for us, UM And
for somebody who's coming in from outof town, it's roughly a thousand dollars
UM for airfare and three nights atthe hotel. UM. And then you
(31:47):
know we're providing them with food andetc. Um. Yeah. Yeah,
like it's the you know, we'retreating our guests as well, Like that's
really you know, we don't wedon't want to be putting people on you
know, like horrible airlines whatnot. You know, like that's that's not how
you run a good event. Youwant to you know, respect these authors
(32:07):
and artists, et cetera. UM. So to do that, though,
you know, that takes money, yeah exactly. Yeah, UM, so
please please donate, Please help us, you know, bring more people in
and you know, if we haveaccess funding, you know, like in
(32:29):
addition to just going into the charity, you know, that will also allow
us to you know, make theexperience for these authors that we love so
much better, um, buy themnice things. Um. So yeah,
um, please please donate it.Really it'll come back to the community and
it it goes to the authors thatyou care about. Yeah exactly. Yeah.
(32:53):
Um. Just a little sneak previewfor the um, those of you
who are looking at this visually.Um, we have a mostly final draft
of the exhibit. Hall um.I actually just saw. I was just
at the convention center yesterday because yeah, so for my day job, my
(33:15):
day job is I work on Marsrivers um and I needed to go to
the Getropulsion Laboratory and Pastina to getfingerprinted for updated security clearance blah blah blah.
Um and yeah for NASA yeah um, and yeah, I had to
pick somebody for like the FEDS tocontact to like interview about me or whatever.
(33:35):
And it's just like, okay, which of my Star Wars friends is
the least like for the FED,Like, well, it has to be
somebody who knows me, like inperson, like who lived near me.
Yeah. Um, so it waslike, yeah, I ended up asking.
I did actually ask, I Italked to It was um, somebody
(33:55):
else locally who was working on Legendscon. And it was after thinking about
it and deciding against somebody else locallywho works on Legends con because of the
time that he spent in Russia,I was kind of like, might just
be more problems than solutions to havethem talk to him, because if they
start looking at his background, there'sgonna be questions and so yes, But
(34:20):
anyways, I did not know becauselike obviously, like you know, this
was like my institution was paying forthis trip. Like I did not really
have time to like you know,go into the venue, but I was
coming in another burbank airport. SoI basically just like ran around the building
twice pretty much like looked in allthe windows and stuff, and it's really
it's a beautiful venue. Like it'sum exactly what it looks like you know
(34:45):
on the pictures online, which isalways good because sometimes it's not like that.
Ye, it's the like the lobbyarea. I couldn't see into the
exhibit hall, but I could seeall of the lobby area, um as
well as the courtyard that the partyis going to be in and that's gonna
be awesome. Yeah, there's likeit's very pretty there. Um they have
(35:09):
um they've like gotten the plants towind over some like u arch type things
there. So that's gonna be acool, cool place for photos in costume
or you know your Star Wars fashion, et cetera. Yeah, but yeah,
it's it's a beautiful, beautiful venue. Um, it's gonna be great.
(35:30):
The the lobbies that I could see, there's you know, definitely room
for um like you know, weknew mathematically there was room for these booths
and tables and whatnot. But stilllike it's good to you know, look
at it and be like, yes, these things will fit in that space.
Um. So yeah, it's justit's gonna be a lot of fun,
awesome. I know that a lotof fans were very curious to see
(35:52):
what the layout was going to beand what to expect. So thank you
for writing that, Catherine. Yeah. Yeah, and it's it could still
you know, like things could stillchange a little bit, um, just
based off of you know, likewhat what types of spaces you know,
like with if we get more vendorswho want one type of space, versus
another type of space. Well,we might you know, read organize things
(36:12):
to try to shuffle around to makemore of that type of booth than this
other type of booth or whatever.Um. Which speaking of which, Um,
if you make awesome Star Wars things, or you have Star Wars collectibles
to sell, or you have StarWars books and comics to sell, um,
vendor or yeah, um yeah,August first is the deadline for vendors.
(36:35):
Um. That is a pretty harddeadline because there's paperwork that we have
turned into the City of Burbank.Um. So yes, um check that
out on our website. It's it'llbe a lot of fun. You know,
this is a very niche audience.This. You know, while this
is a smaller event, Um,everybody who's coming, it's gonna be hungry
(36:57):
for any kind of like legends stuffthat you have. Um, everybody who
walks by is going to be yourtarget audience as opposed to an event that
is more generic, where you'll getmore people walking past your booth, but
they will not necessarily be interested inwhat you have to sell. Yeah.
And if you aren't a vendor, guys, but you have friends or family
that are vendors, please you know, recommend them, um, get them
(37:21):
to reach out to us, andwe can get them set up with a
booth as well. Yeah, wewant that that community involvement. Um.
I'm not really concerned about how bigyour your businesses or what have you.
It's more just like, please bethere if you actually care about this community.
Yeah, yeah, yeah. Andoutside of vendors as well, you
(37:43):
know we have we have actually whenwe go to the next side, Um
important dates yeah, um so yes, June twenty six, end of our
kickstarter campaign. Please please donate becauseagain, if we don't reach the three
thousand dollars goal, we get nothing, which also you know, your card
does get charged, you don't loseanything, but we don't get anything.
Um, so that would be ahuge bummer because that would lead to us,
(38:07):
you know, that would kind ofbe the end of the guests.
We don't make the Kickstarter not much. We have a couple to announced,
yeah yeah, but there's a couple, there's a couple who are in progress
who like you know that funding hasbeen earmarked for them already and that's cool,
you know, and like there's afew more people who are local who
(38:27):
you know, like they would beable to just you know, drive back
and forth. They wouldn't need tostay in the hotel. Um, but
that would be the end of guestscoming from outside of driving distance. Yeah.
UM, so please support that.June twenty six, thank you.
UM. After that, July firstis going to be the last day for
media badge applications. UM, we'vealready hit the like preferred deadlines or like
(38:52):
the priority deadline for that. UM. If you are a journalist or a
content creator, UM, you knowyou right for any of like the Star
Wars fan sites um Fantottracks, UtenatashiStation and rebel scum, forst dot net,
Jedi News, et cetera. UM, you can get a free badge
(39:13):
to come cover our convention. UM. And you know there's a little bit
of like pre coverage as well thatis an exchange for the badge. But
if you do that, definitely checkthat out. That's on our website.
M July seventeenth, we are closingthe applications for our fan film festival.
UM, this is gonna be alot of fun. Any any fan films
(39:34):
that feature expanding universe characters, erasor settings. The film does not have
to be completed when you submit yourapplication. Um, we're gonna be doing
a check in August first, andthen everything will be do September first.
Um, but just that we havean idea of what's you know, how
long this is going to be forour planning process. July seventeenth is the
cutoff day for that. Yeah,And what's important about this guys is you
(39:58):
don't actually have to come to thecon to have your film featured. So
if you're somewhere in Germany or inAustralia because we have listeners there, like
you know, yeah, submit yourfilm and we'll still feature it. And
you know that that'll be in thefootage that we share as well. Yes,
yeah, with your permission. We'regonna have to ask each individual film
you know, for us posting iton our own webs you know web things
(40:22):
after that. But anyways, um, yes, and then July thirty feet
is going to be when we closeour costume contest applications. UM, please
get that in. That will besuper fun. Um, it'll be it
super fun shows everybody bringing out youknow, their creations that are more obscure
(40:42):
than you know, like a mainstreamcostume contest might not really understand. Um,
that'll be a lot of fun.August first is our vendor application to
deadline, as we talked about before. August seventh is the fashion show application
deadline, um, and then Augusteighth is like the absolutely like hard deadline
for fan panel applications because after thatwe're going to be finalizing our schedule um
(41:04):
with like the professional panels that we'rewe're we're we're already talking to guests about,
you know, like pairing them upfor professional panels. Um. There's
gonna be some really fun stuff, yes, so um yeah, just please
please donate our kickstarter so that wecan do more awesome stuff that we can
bring in more guests, we canplan more cool things. Um. And
(41:28):
you know, even if you can'tmake it, just donate because you want
the fandom to have nice things.Yeah, yes, yes, all all
the Expanded Universe fans who feel it, um, there hasn't been much out
there for you, even if youcan't make it. Um. If you
want to make history happen, now'sthe time. Yeah exactly. Yea.
(41:53):
All right, Well, just wewant to go back and talk about Yes,
we've got ten minutes for guests talk, Okay, I just want to
really talk about a few of them. Obviously, able Opinia is one I'm
really excited for, and I knowKyle is excited for and does not make
that many appearances, no, Iknow say that, yeah, and of
(42:16):
course you know, and like hiswork is just so important, you know,
he's done a lot of history oflike history Mandalorian's history of Stiff talks
about Darsana. He's the reason likeZanna's name Sanna or Darsana. Um,
you know, lone Wolf and likethe tail will be one in Luke and
like I'm currently reading Skywalkers and we'regoing to be covering that pretty soon on
(42:40):
the show. Um. I actuallychatted with Abel the other day. He
messaged me apologizing how long to getback to me, and he did say
if he if anyone has question, you know, shoot him an email and
we'll discuss it on the next showwhen we we cover Skywalkers. And he's
really excited that we're recovering now aswell. And it was funny when he
(43:02):
was writing, He's like, hey, have you heard about legends cod Um,
Like maybe you know you should comeat all we can chat there And
I was like, by the way, yeah, we might know something about
that. Libre is like Lisa isa board member. Yeah, I'm a
co owner, a board member.Yeah, we've got Catherine on here several
(43:23):
times. Yeah, I'm like,we know who you are, we're following
a little bit, we know whatyou're doing. Oh yeah, um and
I was going to be incredible.Yeah, I'm so excited. Um another
another one who doesn't come out.I was just gonna say no, it
(43:44):
was exactly going to say, SeanStewart, this will be appearance, will
be his first appearance at a convention. Um, I I will say,
like in my discussions with him,he's really not sure that people are really
gonna be Like he does not realizehow pop where his book is. Yes,
(44:04):
like it's it's not because he's neverdone an event before. Um,
so everyone brings extra copies of DarkRendezvous like like yeah, Like I was
talking to some of the other likeSenny people, and I was just like,
he's gonna get Glass's mob, likethat's the term form. And it's
like it's not. It's not likeyou are, you know, like people
(44:24):
are tripping over themselves and like there'sa huge swarm, but it's just as
overwhelming because it's a steady steady streamthat never stops. Last mom is what
I call it, and like that'swhat it's gonna happen. And like it's
just like I I'm so excited forhim to get to like experience the love
this community has. UM. Soyeah, because he's just he hasn't he
(44:45):
hasn't done a convention before, andI'm so excited that you know, we
get to have this be his firstone. And looping it back around to
the Kickstarter, give us more moneythat we guess, like you know,
we're doing their meals and stuff likethat, and you know, the money
that we have the nicer of aplace that we can take them to.
UM. So yes, please pleasedonate to help make this a fantastic first
(45:08):
convention for Sean UM and you knowfor everyone else UM. And also you
know, bring bring your dark Rendezvousand you know, show up UM and
show him just how much we lovehim because he doesn't know, he doesn't.
And yeah, speaking of other guestswho do not make too many appearances,
(45:30):
UM, miss Barbara Hambley, it'sgoing to be quite the exciting uh
uh guest. In my opinion,I think that yes, she has written
some of um again cult classics herbooks are incredibly that are valuable too.
She does a lot of just reallyinteresting randomness that you know, I was
(45:51):
writing some NOES letter today and I'mlike, closet toming. You know,
she's still that character. It's likehow why you know, like stranded left.
Yeah, like she's outside of StarWars too. Like it wasn't until
I was. I was doing someresearch on her as well before we invited
her, and I was just like, whoa, like she you know,
like she's been in charge of allof these like science fiction writers. Well,
(46:15):
yes, yes she is a professor. Yeah. Um, so it's
really I'm glad. I'm glad wefound her. Um. How we managed
to get a hold of her,was I had to there was? Um
we were following, you know,we're following like all of the legends authors
yet yes, and think about likegoing being at this vintage paperback show that
was in the Los Angeles area, and so I was just like come on,
(46:37):
um, and so like I likefound her there um. Which is
also how the most recent guest Ialso had to Um, one of my
friends who's an author, had tophysically introduce me to him. You could
say, would author introduced you atleast. Yeah. Um, well,
I mean it's it's probably like it'snot a Legends author. I think it's
fine. She's Canadian. She's Canadiand K. Johnston of the Asoka novel
(47:04):
and Padme trilogy. UM, aswell as like really awesome UM like her
own original fiction and fantasy like scifi and fantasy books. Um, she's
a brand of mine. UM.And yeah, she like has been like,
you know, cheering me on fromthe sidelines of this UM and you
know, like it's not relevant toher work, but still yeah funny so
um. But yeah, she madethe introduction for somebody who is you know,
(47:29):
not online for us to be ableto contact UM. So that was
really awesome and it's gonna be great. Yeah it is. It's a person
we have covered before on the show. And I'm excited. Yes, And
I can't say more because I'm notalone. Yes, yes, I'll get
that. We'll get that contract signedthrough enough soon enough. Yeah, because
(47:52):
of the time here, we're gonnamoving along here, Yes, yes,
yes, yes, create a bunchcoat. Super excited for her as well.
Um. She did the Legacy comics, the volume two of that about Anya
Solo UM and the end of thewar. I feel I feel like she
got the short end of the stickjust because of like she published her stuff
(48:15):
and then like de canonization was likeimmediate after that, so like she didn't
really get to do she didn't getthe whole stuff. We owe her.
We owe her a great credit forat least trying to wrap it up somehow
because volume two was so short, and she she somehow found a way to
(48:36):
at least put a tail and bowon on the whole thing. Um,
it wasn't for everybody, but nobodyelse had that opportunity, and she definitely
did that for the community. SoI think that she she is one of
those people who needs a lot morecredit than she commonly gets. Absolutely if
you go to her, like herpage on Wikipedia, it's like it's nothing.
(48:57):
There's like all sentence and I'm like, really, like come on,
guys. So yeah, yeah, her team had the most pressure to perform.
She came up with bases loaded, and she she hit the ball like
you know, I'd say she hithome run. Other people might disagree,
but you know, like it's likeyeah, so much pressure, yeah,
(49:17):
and she she nailed it in umand the plan is too as well.
Guys, there will be a Womenof Legends panel, so she will be
there and Barbara will be there aswell. So we haven't I mean we
haven't. We haven't totally finalized who'son the panel yet, but I yeah,
yeah, I they'll probably agree toit. But yeah, we should
(49:40):
should get that like finalized first,um right. But yeah, yeah,
there's gonna be a lot of reallygreat panels. Um. We like I
We're probably gonna do a like CloneWars Era one, um with Matthew Stover
(50:01):
and Sean Stewart and somebody else who'sstill in the works. And I can't
even say what the other errors arebecause that would tell you what who.
Yeah, yeah, um, butit's just there's gonna be so many me
good panels. And we've also hadwe've had some um volunteering of and again
(50:23):
this is like I'm not going tolike fully say it because it hasn't been
totally set in stone yet, butthere's also been some volunteering of like these
creators wanting to give time for workshopsfor young creators or people who are trying
to break into the industry. Um. So this is a really fantastic I
was just talking to m Bryan abouthow like if like, once this is
(50:45):
set in stone, it would beworth our while to you know, like
just email the creative writing or youknow whatever departments if local universities. Because
the inch, like the day ticketis fifty dollars, like fifty dollars for
a professional writing workshops of a StarWars author. Like yeah, like that
that's absolutely nothing. Um, soyou know, might bring it in people
(51:07):
that way too, um. Butyeah, it's just there's gonna be so
many this is gonna be such awonderful fan driven event. Please donate to
help us, you know, makeit even better. And again, even
if you can't make it, pleasethink about it, just just to support
the community, support something that youbelieve in in creating these spaces. Yeah,
(51:27):
so we can bring more people likeMatthew Stover. Yes, yes,
some of the some of the mostum beloved titles, Trader, Revenge of
This that's crazy. He wrote Trader. That was his first book into Star
Wars and almost impactful book. Yes, the entire New Jedi Order. Yes,
(51:49):
he almost didn't do it like thisis this was when I when I
interviewed him online for a webson event, Like he was kind of hemming and
hauling about taking Star Wars and umone of the other authors was just like
are you crazy man the frug Yeahno, And and his his novelization of
Revenge of the Sith Is I wouldsay, probably the most favored of all
(52:15):
of the adaptations by this point.Nothing against you anybody. And there's there's
a very there's a very fun storyabout that from because George Lucas Line edited
that and there were some like thingswere rejected very late in the game.
And I will let him tell thatstory of what that led to, UM,
but which you can all see liveif you're at the conventions, like
(52:37):
the whole the whole metaphor of likethe Dragon and the Star as annakinspond to
the Dark Side that was written ina very short period of time, just
said you're wrong about the way thatyou're writing the dark Side. UM,
and yeah, so's it really,Yeah, it's a it's a great story.
(52:58):
Come see him tell. My favoritemoment is when and I put in
the newsletters when you know C threePosar two, like what he's saying is
true, Like it did the Jediaattack and like did they you know,
go after Palpatine? And then Arttwo It's like, I don't know,
Anakin doesn't talk to me anymore.I'm just like, oh, just stob
me heart like like ar two,So sad you were best friends and no
(53:22):
Anakin doesn't care like yes, soStover has that that that magic within him
to understand the verse, much likeour our final guests that we have at
least we can talk about here.Ye, mister Randy Stradley, we talked
about him earlier, but he isuh the man the legend. Yeah,
(53:43):
yeah, multiple decades of overseeing rahapstyUm one of the the I'm trying to
find those words as far as justlike a lineage, um, like yeah,
beyond the franchise, beyond the franchise, and to be able to keep
(54:05):
it together with h with del Rayand everything else for all those decades um
and really trying to well, imean found. He is the reason,
one of the central reasons that wehaven't expanded universe that is reliable that any
point of that you pick up inthe stories, well, somebody took the
care to make sure that everything matchedup to the best that they could.
(54:29):
Um, you know, so heis solely responsible for having a cohesive universe,
at least in the comic book Realmof Things. Yeah, yeah,
yeah, I will forgive him forone thing. He wrote a comic book,
Commander Cody, who I hate sooh yeah yeah no, everything was
awesome, but you know, andhe gave us. He gave us Crimson
(54:50):
and the comic. It's just Ihate Cody. But but seriously, he
um he was detrimental, um armsorry, not that tri someone work.
He was fundamental. He was imperativeforce in our community. Yes, and
the fact that he wanted to dothis, Um, we know that.
(55:10):
You know, he was not necessarilythrilled about the license turning turning over to
other competitors, but um, youknow, it's because I think he was
truly in touch with the spirit ofall that is here. So he'll He'll
have a table at some of theauthors. They you know, they want
(55:30):
to be able to walk around andstuff and not be tied down doing like
signings that set times, Randy tablethe whole time, meet all of these
legends fans who um, you know, there's so much stuff that you can
get from the internet, I'm sure, but if you want to be present
while they talk about their experiences workingwithin lucasfilam um you know you're going to
(55:53):
get insight that you can't find anywhereelse, you know. Um, so
come be a part of it.Yeah, and all all of our folks
who who were part of what welove. I mean, let's be real
too. Um, we're aging, you know, so if you want to
to come and be part of itbefore it's all over one day, yeah,
you know, before these people likereally stop doing anything. Yeah.
(56:16):
Well no, I mean when wewere when we were starting the organization of
this event, and I like wasmaking a list of where all these people
live. Like there's been people thatI have like through the course applying this,
I've scratched their name off the listbecause they die, right Yeah right,
So let's make it happen now.Yeah. Yeah, and listeners.
(56:37):
I know we have listeners in California, and we have listeners in Texas.
And I'm assuming it's not far todrive or fly. So come hang out
at party and you know, I'lldrink terrible American beer. Uh there's other
(56:58):
things you're gonna You're gonna love allthe vegan that's yeah, like Burbank has
to offer you, kay. Plusit like consider that too. Um.
I know that when people will saythat it's like it's a whole lot.
It's like I understand, but ifyou're flying in, you are at the
airport, you are at the conventionum. If you choose to, you
(57:19):
can act. You don't really haveto worry about renting a car and all
that fun stuff. It's all aboutwhat you want to do. But yeah,
one shop, Yeah, and there'sthere. The last night when I
was there, I then when Iwalked across the street and there's a bunch
of like there's the chain restaurants ofcourse, like there's the you know,
Token Dennis that has to be bya convention center, but there's a bunch
like the Japanese place that I wentto wasn't to chain. There's a Greek
(57:42):
place that's not a chain restaurant.Like there's like the Pasadena burbank Los Angeles
area, and like you're only likefifteen twenty if you do want to rent
a car, you're only like halfan hour away from like these amazing museums
and beaches and theme parks, andyou know it's there there, there,
there's so much to do. Um, just you know, come and it's
(58:04):
September in Brink is gonna be amazing, Like it's gonna be nice, warm
weather. Come from wherever you arethat it's starting to turn to fall and
just have a great little little pieceof summer and a little piece of Legends.
Yeah, a big piece of Legends. Yeah. Yeah. Two days
of nothing but Legends NonStop. Yeah, isn't that great? Guys? I
(58:25):
just think about that. If you'reif you're missing out on uh, you
know, the Disney event, becauseit's why it's overseas this year, why
not come, why not come andcelebrate it with us instead? Yeah exactly,
And I'm falling from Canada, soyou bet y? Yeah? Well
great, Well, thanks Catherine againfor coming on and talking more about this
(58:51):
and you know, bringing this hopefullyto everyone's attention and encouraging people. Um
yeah, yep, all right, thank you, well, thank you Catherine,
and thanks Kyle as well, andeveryone's like, you know, take
a look at the campaign. Letme know if you if you just want
to like spread it around or ifyou have any more interest in like the
(59:13):
fan films and things like that stuff. Great, So you can contact us
directly at Legends Library yea or umwe'll provide the links also to the convention.
Yeah yeah, Catherine. What isthe email for everyone to be in
touch for the applications as well?Legend Legends Consortium at gmail dot com.
Um, it's all over our website, so just google Legends con Legends dashco
(59:37):
