(00:11):
Welcome to Level Select, a showabout games and game development. I'm your
host Fred Wood, and I'm yourhost Mike Devir. Oh boy, Mike,
how you do I'm doing okay.I've mentioned over the past couple of
weeks that I've been working on atabletop o repug and that we've been doing
some playtesting, and yeah, Ihad my first combat playtest earlier this week

(00:32):
and it went literally without a hitch. That's fantastic. Yeah. I've got
some like minor numerical stuff that Ineed to adjust and little things to implement,
but like, no major catastrophes,no major failures, no major learning
curve situations with the players. Everythingwent well and we did a full combat

(00:58):
encounter that took about you know, there's like four party members, seven enemies,
which in Dungeons and Dragons is likean hour and a half time generally,
we did in forty minutes. Thegame moves fast, and I think
with a bit of tweaking, Ican get it moving even quicker, which
is what I want, because Idon't like when combat and tabletop RPGs takes

(01:19):
forever. I think that like leadsto situations where you know, people are
on their phones or they're checking out. You know, it's like you keep
it snappy and engaging, then they'regoing to be thinking and thinking more tactically,
planning things around what their other partymembers are doing, and just generally
trying to work together as a unitrather than I need to wait for my

(01:42):
turn to do my big thing thatdoes eight hundred damn you know, like
right, yeah, At one point, one of the party members like,
I'm going to run up and grapplethis guy who's been using a bow against
us, so that way our otherranged guy can get like a bonus to
shooting them because now they're a stationarytarget being held in place, which I
thought was really cool and like verycreative and just one of those things that

(02:05):
if a game encourages, you knowpeople are going to do that. So
that went really well. I'm workingon the next steps for the play test,
which are going to be combat withmagic involved, which is putting me
back in that position where I'm alittle scared that that's where everything falls apart,
and then leveling up in character advancementand then doing combat with higher level

(02:28):
characters, because this initial one wasdone with a bunch of level one characters.
And then a bunch of goblins, and so I want to start mixing
and matching, you know, certainthings like Okay, what do a bunch
of level five characters look like againsta solo big enemy, would you know?
And doing those kinds of things justso that way I can have as
many use cases as possible to youknow, help me make this game as

(02:51):
good as it can be before Igo to Kickstarter and I demand people give
me tens of thousands of their dollarsfor it. The idea of shorter,
shorter, more engaged battles is appealingto me because I can think of some
like D and D sessions that Ihad over the pandemic where it was like,
okay, well we've been playing forthree hours. I think I've gone
twice, yeah, in our teamof three people. So yeah. The

(03:15):
big thing I want is I don'twant people to hear role for an initiative
and then go, oh yeah. It's like you've got your players that combat
is their favorite part of D andD. Yeah, and then those people
are pumped, but the other onesaren't. It'd be great to have a
balance between all of that, right, And that's kind of what I'm striving
for especially considering that I'm building thisgame to be a bit more dungeon crawling

(03:39):
focused, so having combat be quick, be engaging, and having options for
players to engage with combat in interestingways. I think it's neat because this
isn't unique to D and D.But I really dislike in tabletop games where
it's like, oh, I'm goingto try to trip this person, and
then it's like you don't have thetripping attack ability so you can do that,

(04:00):
Like okay, but like, what'sstopping me from trying? Right?
Like, yeah, I might notbe as successful, but come on,
whatever, you never kicked your legout of your friend in high school before.
I didn't because I'm not a jerk, That's fair. My friends were
and me a j yeah right,you know, you know it's like it's
it's stuff like that. It's like, yeah, you're not good at it,

(04:23):
but like you still tried because youwere a dumb kid. Yeah,
you know. So it's like,Okay, if a dumb kid can do
that, why can't my marginally moretrained, infinitely more physically capable adventurer right,
who's level two? You know, like that sort of stuff. So
it's it's encouraging that sort of thingwithout like punishing players for thinking outside of

(04:46):
the box, which I think happensin some games, not all unintentionally,
by just buy their core design. So yeah, that's been going. I'm
really excited. Um, and theneventually it's just putting art and getting some
formatting done and then yeah, goingto market. How about you? What
have you been up to. Letme tell you about COVID. Oh no,

(05:10):
you're sick of it. I'm sickof it. My wife's sick with
it. I might have it soon. Yeah. No, it's been a
rough week. Oh no, sheis thankful worse Yeah, uh, she
has not had a fever in threedays. Still got a cough. I
have been quarantining in my own house, which is not great because we're both
in the same house quarantining so becauseI walk around right and like, you

(05:34):
also work from there, so there'sthat whole complication of like you don't get
to leave your house as often asmany people right now, you get to
leave your house even less. Andit's like she's been really sick, so
she needs food and water and things. So it's just been like, Okay,
let me focus on doing the dayjob and then also taking care of

(05:55):
the wife who's sick while also tryingnot to get sick myself. So yeah,
it's bad, but I'm alive andsoshi and so far so good.
I'm going to take a COVID testlater today to see if I can go
have a beer, but realistically Iprobably shouldn't, so I probably won't.
Um, Instead, I'll just keepplaying the COVID test or the beer I

(06:16):
probably probably shouldn't have. Shouldn't goout and have beers. I mean,
you can just go out and beirresponsible and not take the COVID test.
Yep, No, I'm not gonnado that. That's good. But yeah,
it's so weird sleeping in separate rooms. I'm sleeping in the guest room,
which hasn't been totally made up,So I just I haven't slept well
and I've been anxious, and thenlike seven magical robed men that we didn't

(06:42):
elect took away bodily autonomy from fiftypercent of the population today. So it's
just been like, it's been aweird one. It's bad recording. It's
just a weird, bad, badday. Yeah. Um, but you
know what hasn't been bad, Mike, I was gonna say video games,
but now that I think I was, I was gonna say, it's like,
Man, if we had sponsors, what a transition. Now I want
to sponsor this podcast. You'll getglowing transitions like that. Yeah, for

(07:05):
real. Um, I also partof type of video game. Forgot about
that with pathfinding, which is somethingthat I haven't messed with before, and
that that stuff is scary. Butthat said, I'm going to transition right
back over to our commercial break andthen we'll we'll just we'll come back.
We'll talk about some video games.Sorry, everyone, and Michael Devir,

(07:30):
We're gonna talk about some video games. What have you been playing? You've
used my full name, and nowI feel like I'm being judged because you're
reading the document. So I mayhave talked recently on this show about a
certain sequel to a certain video game. Darsels three. Nah. It was
released around the same time as Darselsone and Skyrim. It's a It's an

(07:53):
open world fantasy rpug developed by Capcomwith a direct lead of Hideaki Eats No
of mccry fame, and also StreetFighter Alpha and a bunch of other things.
Rival Schools, um I Tripped andfell back into playing Dragon's Dogma.
I'm not even gonna pretend like Iplayed anything new this week. Um,
I had some friends that have beenchecking it out. I'm not disappointed and

(08:16):
I'm not surprised, but yeah, you're the tambra of your voice says otherwise.
No, it's cool. We've justgot this, uh this podcast where
we get to talk about new andexciting things. And you were playing a
game from two thousand and ten, twenty eleven, twenty twelve. All right,
two thousand and twelve. Yea,man, that game is good and

(08:39):
bad at the same time. Itis the best Justiny game on the concept
of Dragon's Dogma. What is thething that Okay, So, Dragon's Dogma
is an RPG with a terrible plotline, a world that is generic fantasy.
Right, you're doing the most Rember, No, stay with me here,
all right. That has one ofthe best care creators I've ever played,

(09:01):
Okai companion system that is I thinkunparalleled in any game ever, and
some of the most fun and engagingcombat with general party play and also the
best way to interact with big monstersin any game that I have ever played.
Okay, I like more so thansay, a shout out the clauses

(09:22):
yes, because you're actually like afunctional combat person and not like a man
desperately desperately trying to find his wayaround the humongous body while also just sucking
at everything other than firing a bowfrom horseback. Okay, that game.
Like what that game does well,I think it does better than any game

(09:43):
in existence. There is something aboutclimbing along a chimera's back and systematically dismantling
each individual body part so that waythe chimera can't do certain things. So
like that's the tutorial. Enemy isa chimera and it's you know, drag
body, goat head, snake tail, and the snake tail has poison tacks,

(10:03):
the goat head cast spells, andthen the kind of the lion head
is just doing all your big meatymelee attacks. Dragon's Dogma has a thing
like Shadow of the Colosses where youcan skidder up, climb on bodies and
you know, hit individual body parts. Hitting those individual body parts affect the
enemy. So like one of thebig ones that I only just found out

(10:26):
recently is that if you kill thelion first, the goat takes over and
starts moving the body around like agoat. Uh. You know, you
kill the goat head, it can'tcast spells anymore. You kill the snake
tail gets cut off, it can'tpoison to you anymore. And every major
enemy has stuff like this. You'refighting a cyclops. Shoot it in the
eyes. That's going to do stuff, you know, start attacking around it's

(10:48):
maybe it's got a helmet on.This is a very common thing that you
encounter in the game. You climbup the cyclops, you jump in its
space, and you start banging atit, and then as it's going to
grab at you, you jump offand it instead knocks its own helmet off.
You know. Oh, you're flyingin a on a griffin's back.
Okay, break the griffin's wings, break its wings, ground it, you
know. And the game is justfull of that, on top of having

(11:11):
ponds that will have their own likecombinations of different AI parameters that will govern
how they act or the yeah, and you can have one that you create
and then two more that you summonin, and those pawns will have their
own various AI parameters that give themlittle personalities and little things that will determine
how useful they are in support, how useful they are in combat, and

(11:35):
various little things in between, andas those pawns fight certain enemy types,
they get more efficient at fighting thoseenemies, Like it's wild how intensely intelligent
that that system is. And thenyou can set up like combo attacks,
like I'm playing a character that wieldsa big great sword, and I can
use my great sword form a rampthat then one of my pawns can run

(11:58):
up and do like a leaping doubledagger attack. That sounds cool as hell.
It's rad. The game's incredible,Like it doesn't matter that the visuals
are like the most generic fantasy inthe world. It doesn't matter that the
plot line is the most bone headedstupid like might as well not be their
thing possible. When you're playing thegame and after you get past the initial

(12:20):
like tutorial area hump, the gameis just unlike anything and it's so fun
and you can see the pieces whereyou're like, oh, man, with
a sequel, this game could begood, this game could be well,
like I'm kidding, I'm kidding,I'm sorry. It's like I always see
it described as like the best sevenout of ten or like the best eight

(12:41):
out of ten game, and it'slike, I think that's fair. I
love that game. That game islike Top ten for me, but like
looking at it without my rose coloredgoggles on, like, yeah, the
game scott problems. But it's alsogot a character creator system where like if
you make a little short boy,you can crawl into holes that you're boy
can't crawl into. And if youmake a big boy, that big boy

(13:03):
is going to have a harder timegetting knocked off of monsters because you're able
to apply your mass into keeping yourselfbraced while attacking them better and stuff like
that. So there's just like allthese little microsystems or like oh, you're
playing a short boy and you're inlike knee high water while your lantern went
out. It's just a nice littleattention to detail. There's like weird attentions

(13:24):
to detail and like stuff like that. I don't know, it's a game
that, like, it's a gamethat I think that if you are into
game design in any capacity, thatyou should check out because there are so
many systems in there that just workthat like once you start seeing you like
once you kind of start like youknow, turning into Neo and seeing the
code of all the little microsystems andall the things that are interacting. Like,

(13:46):
for example, you can pick upjust about any human sized enemy in
the game. Okay, you canalso pick up your allies, which means
it's not an invalid strategy to grabone of your dudes, throw them at
an enemy, knock that edit down, and then run up and do a
big jumping special attack man sounding topick up your enemy, hurdle your enemy

(14:07):
into the air while like your sniperbuddy just starts rating arrows down and air
juggling them. And also, thisgame is like always on sale. It's
like constantly on sale. It's stilllike two dollars right now. It's like
dirt cheap, like between five totwelve bucks. Like check it out.
It is a master class in thegame designers clearly didn't have enough time to

(14:31):
do everything, but they had enoughtime to get the stuff that was important
in there. Um so, Iknow you can share your pawn between characters.
Can you do active co op multiplayer? Unfortunately no, that is I
will say the one major critical flawof the game is that there is no
multiplayer in Everyone that has played thatgame has gone Man, if this game

(14:54):
had multiplayer would be perfect, yeah, because all of its flaws aside.
If you could do all of thisridiculousness with up to three of your buddies,
yeah, oh I bet that wouldalso just crumble under networking conditions.
There was an MMO, yeah, where you could do all of that stuff.
Oh dang, I didn't realize more. I thought that the MMO was

(15:15):
like a really stripped down version. No, they had more classes in the
MMO. They added like a fullmetal alchemist class in the MOMO. It's
wild. So like for me,it's like the prospect of the of the
second one having just like, ohyeah, we can just have a lobby
of me and my homies. Thatdoes sound very appealing. So yeah,
I'm playing Dragon's Dagma. I'll havea new game next week. I'm sorry
everyone, I don't believe you,but I hope that it's true. What

(15:39):
have you been playing? Okay, one of the two games you have on
here. I know it's technically new, but come on, yeah, okay,
fine of those games are thirty yearsold. Yeah, thirty one,
um as of the other day.Actually, we'll start with that one,
just since you're calling it back inthe corner with my knife down. Yeah,
okay, So, Sonic Origins cameout yesterday to reactions recording it is

(16:07):
a collection of Sonic that Jog one, two three, and Sonic CD.
Also Sonic three has Sonic and Knucklesattached to it as a single complete game.
Right. Um, these games havebeen remastered a couple of different times,
Sonic one and two have been rereleased an infinite number of times,
and this is the first time thatwe've gotten a full remaster recreation of Sonic

(16:30):
three Knuckles. Uh So, thebig glaring emission in this is that back
in the day, there was somereally good music and Sonic three and Sonic
and Knuckles that was not properly creditedat the time, but people kind of
dug in and realized after some time, and was just confirmed yesterday by the
creator of Sonic that jog Yuji Nakathat Michael Jackson made that music. This

(16:55):
is not surprising. It's not likea rumor anymore. It's like hard right.
Yeah. Yesterday, Eugenaka tweeted, wait, they took out Michael Jackson's
music, so, which is tosay they took out Michael Jackson's music from
Sonic three, Knuckles and Sonic Originsfor unexplained reasons. Yeah, weird.

(17:15):
One could easily assume that it iscontractual obligations or writes managements something back in
the day, So back when Sonicthree came out was the beginnings of the
trials against Michael Jackson for alleged childabuse. Yes, I believe that everything,

(17:37):
everything I could possibly say is justassumption. There have been a lot
of people saying these things on theInternet without actual evidence. But one could
assume that Sega didn't want to beassociated with Jackson while releasing their children's video
game while this was going on.And so that's why when Sonic three and
Sonic and Knuckles came out, BradBuckster was the only one that was UH

(18:00):
credited. Who was somebody from MichaelJackson's production team. Yeah, um,
so that music is not in thisgame, and instead what they have is
Jensenoe, who did a bunch ofreally phenomenal music in the Sonic Adventure generation
and after UH did some arrangements ofthe original Sonic three music that didn't make

(18:21):
it into Okay, I'm like,I'm all over the place. This is
why I can't see you can't seemy expression, but it's like it's increasingly
more concerned. Okay, so therethere's so much about Sonic the hedgehock threes
music, and that isn't even thegame. So what can I say?
Because I mean that soundtrack is likelegendary. Yeah, it's fantastic. The

(18:45):
way back in the day, theydid a Sonic three and Knuckles collection for
PC, like for Windows ninety five, and it had different music. It
had these these different arrangements that werereally strange, especially after hearing the Michael
Jackson music and the Genesis version ofthe game. I believe it was earlier

(19:06):
this year or last year somebody founda prototype version of Sonic three for the
Sega Genesis which predated Michael Jackson's musicand had the music that was in the
PC version of the game. Sothat was the original Sonic, that JUG
three music, Yeah, was intendedfor the game. Michael Jackson's music was
way better. Michael Jackson and histeam that music was so much better.

(19:26):
So the music that is in SonicOrigins the twenty twenty two thirty one year
anniversary collection is a rearranged version ofthat original Sonic that JUG three music.
I haven't heard it in game.I've only heard it as posted on the
internet. It's not great. It'sfine, no, but like it's especially

(19:48):
if you're a long running fan ofsome of these games, or even if
you're just you know, a youngerfan that just like maybe I played them
emulated and you just want to havean official version on hand. That stinks.
Yeah, especially considering like how influentialsome of that music is on like
modern indies and that sort of stuff. Yeah, for sure. That said,

(20:08):
the game is mostly really good.I have only finished Sonic that Jog
one in my little bit of playthrough last night, but it was great.
It's a giant wide screen version ofSonic the Hedgehog with a controller.
It's that Android version. But there'sbeen some stuff about how the way that
it was adapted into this package hasintroduced some bugs. The developers who handled

(20:33):
the Sonic three and Knuckles re releasecame out last night very publicly and they're
like, hey, the version thatwe handed in wasn't perfect, but whatever
they did to integrate this with therest of the package introduced a lot of
bugs that we did not do becausethis is this is not what we would
have done, and they're like,we want to fix this, but our

(20:55):
part of this contract is done.Hopefully Sega wants to work with us as
we want to work with them,So there's there's all of that. The
menu treatment is cute and fun. It's like these. I bought the Digital
Deluxe version, which has the premiumversions of the menus for the games,
so I don't know what happens inthe non for Yeah, I know you've

(21:15):
got a very crumpy look on yourface. What but they're really cute three
D renders, not three D renders, but actual like three D. It's
three D models. It's a threeD menu. Yeah, that shows all
of the different islands, So theisland for Sonic one, the island for
Sonic two, the island for Sonicthree, The options menu I think is

(21:37):
the Sonic Spinball Island, and thenthe museum is the Sonic three D Blast
Island. It's really cute. Howmuch is this packaging? So it's forty
dollars. It's forty dollars for thosefour games, which I think is kind
of reasonable because they also add incutscenes between each game, scenes that were

(22:00):
animated by Tyson Hessan Gosh. Idon't remember the studio. The full fun
cut scenes that you can play astory mode of all four games and just
go from game to game to gamethat has these nice little interstitials that connect
to them. Yeah, there's there'sa lot of really cool stuff. And
to have a modern, current genconsole support for these widescreen versions of Sonic

(22:25):
and Sonic two and Sonic three,Sonic CD, Sonic and Knuckles, it's
great. I am happy to payforty dollars for it. You could also
pay forty five dollars for the DigitalDeluxe Edition, which throws on some more
bells and whistles, and I figureI'm in for forty bucks. Somebody as
we'll be in. Yeah. Yeah, what else have you been playing?
The other game that I've been playingthis week is a lot more new and

(22:48):
a lot more fresh, and itis Neon White. Yeah. Neon White
just released on at least PC andSwitch. I think it might also be
on other platforms. I'm not sure. Yeah, I actually don't, because
I'm gonna be picking it up onPC probably later today. Yeah you should.
So here's the thing. Neon Whitekicks ass. It is so fresh
and so good, easily the secondbest video game I've played this year.

(23:11):
It is a difficult game to describe. So it is a speed runner game,
but you also don't have to playit as a speed runner. You
can just play it through level bylevel. If you're playing the game in
first person, you move very fast, and you have two button abilities.
You can attack with a left clickor the right click. And the things
that you're picking up are these cardsand these cars are guns, and the

(23:33):
guns will either shoot or they willgive you a movement ability. So the
first gun you get is just anormal pistol. Left click to shoot with
a pistol, right click to geta double jump in mid air. And
if you have three of these, then you can use that double jump multiple
times in the air, or youcould get a horizontal dash or a fireball,
all sorts of different things. Andso what you're doing in each of

(23:56):
these stages is killing all of thedemons and then making your way to the
exit. And it is so fastand so frentic or frenetic, frenetic.
I don't even know how, andI'm so tired, Mike, but I
want to talk to you about JohnWhite because I'm excited about it. It
is fast and if you die, you're right back in it. You just
start the level over, you canpress the F key on the keyboard and

(24:18):
it will automatically jump right back intothe beginning of the stage. Nice And
once you have beaten each level, you can unlock a present in each stage,
and the presents are hidden in differentways in different parts of the stage
that require you to go way outsideof what you would normally do to complete
each of these stages. They're allvery cool little puzzles, like movement puzzles.

(24:41):
The other part of this game isit's a visual novel. What I
think a lot of people are probablynot gonna love the story. Okay,
I am eating it up. It'sa bunch of little archetypes of these sinners
who are competing to get a spotin heaven. The main character is voiced
by Steve Blue Him who is SpikeSpiegel of Cowboy Bebop and hundreds of other

(25:03):
characters. Right, But I mean, you hear the voice, you think,
oh, yeah, this is SpecSpiegel, and like they go for
that. Yeah, he is notas cool and suave as Spec spiegl is.
He's actually kind of a big dweeb. But then again, I guess
Spike is too. In a lotof ways, this game is fantastic,
and I wish that I could bemore eloquent about my thoughts about it,

(25:26):
but my brain is not everywhere thatit needs to be. Right now,
there is a demo on Steam.I would recommend trying that. I can
almost guarantee that if it clicks withyou, then you should just go buy
the game because it's cool. Great. Also, the soundtrack is phenomenal.
It's sort of like, because I'veseen videos and trailers for the game,
sort of sort of seems like oneof those games where the soundtrack has to

(25:48):
be good. Oh sure. Becauseso each chapter of the game is split
up there called missions, and oneach mission you've got like ten small stages
that you're making a way through. Those those bits where you quickly go through,
kill all the enemies and then getto the end, the same music
track will play on a loop throughoutthat entire mission. Interesting, Okay,

(26:11):
it doesn't. It doesn't like repeatevery time you die. It just continues
playing, and so it never getsgreating and it never gets obnoxious. And
even when I'm trying to play thesame stage over and over again for twenty
minutes, trying to get my timedown, like I'm still not annoyed by
any of the music, which Ithink is high praise. Yeah, that's

(26:33):
great. Um, yeah, socool as hell. I believe it's twenty
five dollars and check it out.Cool. Um. I'm almost almost almost
almost done with Thirteen Sentinels Ages Room. I thought I was going to beat
it last night, and then there'sa lot more to it, and it
had it had a really great metanarrative twist that I'm like, oh,

(26:56):
okay, all right, is thisthe reason everybody loves it? And then
I kept going, I'm like,I was this the reason people love this?
And I'm just saying like, oh, this is actually just very good,
just a good video. Yeah,it's not one single moment, it's
the combined aspect of everything. Right. Also, I want to try Yaki
Soba pon uh. It's just asandwich with Yaki sob in it, I

(27:18):
guess. But they talk about theytalk about it a lot in the game.
So yeah, did you play anythingelse or really just Dragon's Dogma?
I? Um, oh boy,no, all right, I played my
game like that's you know that counts. Yeah? Yeah, yeah. So

(27:40):
but I've just I've mostly just beenso nose to the Grindstone on developing that
and that I've that's where my freetime goes. So well, uh,
speaking of free time, Yeah no, that's not a good translation. Have
another break and then we'll answer somequestions. Yeah, be right back.
I was to say welcome back, but they haven't gone anywhere. Yeah,

(28:02):
but now we can just roll withthis. So so we we not last
week, but a week before, because we forgot because there were so many
things going on. Last week.We issued a question for the audience,
not from but for the audience, which was what handheld system do you think
you've spent the most time on andwhat game occupied it the most. We
had talked about the PSP a lotabout the PSP. Yeah, do you

(28:29):
want to take this first one fromisaac Ja? Yeah? Yeah, I
would be happy too. So isaacJa writes in GBA for my early teens,
and the game that sticks out inmy mind is star X. It's
the closest thing to star Fox onthe go at the time. I never
beat it because it was a verylong game and had passwords for saves,
but I enjoyed it. Oh doyou remember that era passwords? Yeah?

(28:51):
I don't miss it, do notmiss it? Anyways, continuing VPSP for
my late teens in college days, gear solid portable opts because I loved the
Soldier collecting, loved it enough topick up portable ops plus, which is
why I wasn't as huge on thisaspect in peace Walker. I was already
burning out on this by then. Then they had the system in place for

(29:11):
MGS five two. Yeah, theyreally like they they found that system,
like Kajuma found that system and wentflag in the ground. Sorry, pardon
my way, Legia did it.It's like flag in the ground. I
will not be leaving from here.So the Soldier Kidnapping simulator aspect of portable
ops, not portable ops of peaceWalker and five were the thing that got

(29:33):
me to keep coming back to thatgame. So I am going to reveal
myself here. I never played theportable ops portable OPS games. I didn't
like them, that's fair. Yeah, and I was. They were also
not by Kajima. Oh they're not. No, they like it was Kajuma
Productions, but he didn't specifically directthat game. Yeah, yeah, it's
like, but I came. Icame to peace Walker pretty late, Sam,

(29:56):
and then I played you know, ground Zeros and Phantom Pain. I
played both, I want to sayday one, um yeah, and that
soldier system was pretty great. Yeahit was like Pokemon, but it was
dudes, human beings. Yeah.Um but I can definitely see after four
games of it that you would justbe yapped. Portal Ops Plus was this

(30:18):
weird one that was like just multiplayerU it was. It was a much
less expensive expansion for portable ops thatwas just multiplayer, like ninety nine percent.
Sure. It also added like abunch of the characters from four into
it. Oh heck, yeah,I can play as Can I play as
Drebin's money? No, I don'tthink you could even play as Drebin Johnny

(30:42):
that bought rights in Game Boy Colorwas his choice, and it was Pokemon
Crystal spent so much time playing withfamily members. I like, so,
I'd never really played a ton ofGame Boy Color or any of the Pokemon
games after Red and Blue. Butman, Pokemon Red and Blue I poured
a lot of hours into trading withwith like schoolmates and friends like that was

(31:08):
That game did occupy me for avery long time. I so, I
actually I owned Pokemon Red and Iowned Pokemon Yellow, and I remember playing
those games, but a very specificallyweird thing happened the same year I got
Pokemon Red that I like kind ofmissed the boat on Pokemon entirely, because

(31:34):
that same year I got Links Awakening, or at least Awakening Dax I believe.
Yeah, Yeah, yeah, yeah, the GBC one and I discovered
Gundam. We're not I'm sorry,Macross, Oh, same thing. Nope,
I'm not. We're not having thisconversation right now. So I completely

(31:56):
like missed the Pokemon training. It'slike I remember playing Pokemon Red and poke
them on Yellow. I do notremember if I like traded with people or
if I played with people. Likethese social aspects of that game are a
mystery to me, and I nevergot the fever the way that a lot
of people have for that franchise. That's probably for the best. It seems
like it has been. It's kindof like being a Sonic fan, where

(32:19):
like they just keep doing things thatreally upset and disappoint and yet you keep
buying it. The next one comesin from T who echoes almost exactly what
you just said, which is again, favorite handheld was the game Bloy Color,
and the game they played the mostwas Links Awakening presumably DX, because
that was the game Blay Color oneI probably played for four years as a

(32:43):
kid before I learned how to usethe magic mushroom to change the guy back
from a tanuki. So confusing asa kid. Yeah, some of the
parts of that game are genuinely verychallenging. Yeah, that game is of
TuS the eighth dungeon before you getthe Magic wand is super weird parts of
the trading game. I replayed thatgame a little bit before they announced the

(33:05):
Switch remake, just to go throughit and the Oracle titles again, because
I think those three games comprise probablymy three favorites. Eld the titles.
Yeah, yeah, there's just someesoteric stuff in all of those games.
I love them, but like thereis just some weird shenanigans going on,
especially if you're like a little kid. Yeah, I appreciate the tree that

(33:29):
has the phone in it that youcan talk to to figure out what you're
supposed to do next. Yep,they really so. I played that game.
I have fond memories of sitting inthe car wash in my dad's astro
van playing Links Away Awakening on mybig gray brick of a game boy yeah,

(33:49):
and then just a few years ago, like laying on the couch for
two days and finishing Links Awakening onSwitch just within two days, I think,
because if you know what you're doing, it's not a very long game.
It's really not. And you canalso through that game if you're yeah,
yeah, if you can move quickthrough it. Yeah, and having
more buttons to do more things makesthat game a lot less frustrating. Yeah,

(34:13):
I kind of want to go backand play the game Boy or the
Gameboy Color version. I guess GameboyColor versions incredible and time the fact that
I'm kind of bummed out that Idon't think they kept this in the Switch
version. The game Boy Color versionhad a tie in with the game Boy
printer right for taking pictures. Yeah, specifically there's a couple that you can

(34:35):
take on the little date that youcan go on with Marin. I think
you can do some photography stuff andthen like it shows a little image and
you can take a screenshot of itwith the switch. Okay, on the
switch. Okay, But do theynot? I thought they took out the
little rat guy though, the littlerat photographer guy, I don't remember.
I never ad a dampe, soyou could create your own versions, and

(34:57):
I don't think anybody ever did that, but it's a cool game. Yeah,
sneep, Yeah, different question thisweek. Yeah for the audience,
how about you go ahead? Yeah? Yea. The question that we have
for everyone listening and we'd love tohear your thoughts on, is what video
game would adapt best to a movieor streaming series. Generally, you'll you'll

(35:17):
hear me say that this is abad idea and that you shouldn't do that
because video games are good for differentreasons than movies and TV series to good
for example, but if Wire wouldmake a terrible video game, sure,
one of the best TV series ofall time. I bet you could make
a good Wire video game. No, I bet it would be a visual

(35:39):
novel though, to add best,Yeah, Fred, what would you think?
Gosh, I don't know series Foryears, I would have said the
answer, or the opposite answer wasSonic the Hedgehog. I would have never
wanted to see a live action Sonicmovie, and they prove me wrong.
So, and they're already doing it. But they're already making a Duke NUKEMB

(36:00):
three D movie. So, ora Duke NUKEMB movie hopefully based off of
the Seminal class at Duke nukembe threeD hopefully because otherwise why even do it?
Gosh, I don't, I don'tknow. Uh, definitely not Halo.
I'm like going through the list oflike my favorite franchises and it's like,

(36:20):
yeah, they did such a badjob with Halo. Um Steinsgate already
got a live action UM play aseries which was surprisingly good. Same for
Near Um. I was like,Near has two plays that are like so
critical to parts of Automatic Yeah, yep, uh, you know what could

(36:40):
be cool this Survivor series, Likereally dramatic take on risk of rain.
Risk of Rain could make it cool. Okay, maybe that's just a single
horror movie. Yeah yeah, whatabout you? So for me, the
perfect adaptation from video games to movieor streaming or TV series already exists.

(37:04):
And it's the nineteen ninety five MortalKombat movie. Oh sure, yeah,
Like and I Will Fight and Dieon the Hill that that movie is not
just good in like a campy shlockyway, which it is, but that's
just a fun nineties action movie.Like I adore that movie without irony or
or joke. I mean, thatfirst movie was great. It's so fun.

(37:29):
Yeah, And I will say theTV series I believe Mortal Kombat Conquest
I believe it was called, hassome good moments. It's sort of like
a Mortal Kombat TV series by wayof like Zena or Inventions of Hercules,
which also, like when it wascanceled, has the bleakest ending of an
adapted media I think I've ever seen, because the villains just win, and

(37:53):
not in a like triumphant fighting waylike no. The heroes go out like
chumps, and the series ends withShaocan mocking Raiden Dang like it's brutal um.
But it's also just like it's likeagain, it isn't a great series,
no, but it's fun. Andthat's usually all I'm looking for for
these things, because it's like theonly other option I would really go to,

(38:15):
And it's like they keep almost gettingthere but then never quite doing it
well enough is I just want?I just want a series of Resident Evil
movies. Don't screw with the gameplot lines. Don't try to interconnect or
interweve interweve stuff I caught myself good, don't try to like sprinkle in your

(38:37):
authorial intense like no, just adaptthe games residue Evils one, two,
and three are all. You canboil those games down two hour and a
half two hour zombie action films.I mean you could do that with four.
Two, You could do that withfour. You can skip to seven.
Yeah, but like those first threegames are four games are rock solid

(39:01):
for those kinds of adaptations, andthey keep almost getting there for me.
Um, Like I saw Welcome toRaccoon City not long ago, and it's
charming, it's fine, But thefact that they're trying to jam RI one
in RI two together it seems unnecessary. It's unnecessary, Like all you need
to do for an r E onemovie stars agents get stranded at at the

(39:24):
not the Western Mansion. What isman's name? Yeah, the mansion that
I cannot remember the name of theowner of. And just what's going on
with Umbrella Corp? Okay, coolsequel while that's happening, what's going on?
You know? Weeks later, Leon, Scott Kennedy and Claire Redfield looking
for her now lost brother. Likeit's so easy to interview these things.

(39:45):
Do it as a streaming series?Have season two be resonable to three beautiful?
Yeah? Um, And that's reallyit I'm pretty anti adaptations of video
games, So the ones that Ikeep thinking of, like every time I'm
like, you know, that wouldbe fun, I'm like, oh,
they're already doing that. Like I'mlike, oh, a Destiny one.

(40:07):
I'm like, oh, well, they're already working on some sort of like
expanded universe destiny thing. And that'swhat I typically want from an adaptation is
either you're like, just tell theexact story as it is, or tell
a different story in the universe.Don't focus on the characters, don't rewrite
things, just like do a funside story. Right, An airport for

(40:30):
aliens currently run by dogs would probablybe a really excellent one. Yeah.
Yeah, honestly, that just likebig flat JPEGs of dogs trying to help
a very confused person as they lookfor their wife. And I guess that
seem means like an animated Monkey Island. Yeah, sure, you know,
yeah, maybe like a Weird Dayof the Tentacle animated miniseries. Yeah,

(40:53):
I would like that. I wouldlike that very much. I go not
to animated movie. Maybe. Yeah. I guess he could just take everything
that Tim Shaefer's in and turn itinto a fun cartoon series like a Brutal
Legend animated series with well, weshould stop coming up with great answers,
so that way the people please writeit. You can write in with your

time I'd say something dumb, andI know my brain's just not in it.
Today, you can write into maila level select dot cool. You

mush. Yeah, how about yougo for this one? Mike. Sure,
I will do that in one sec. I have to use the bathroom
so bad. All right, Mike, do you want to take this last

(42:00):
question for the show? Yeah?So our last question today comes from front
of the show, Mark Lentz, who writes in it is known you talk
about Duke Newcombe three D a lotand frankly, we are growing tired of
it. I know We're sorry. You know one day, we'll have nothing
left to say about Duke Ncombe threeD. Mark continues. Then that said,

(42:20):
if you could lay out an excruciatingdetail why Duke Newcombe three D is
the best game, that would begreat. So. It has really great
networking, it has really great multiplayer, the map design is unparalleled. It's
got a huge range of different funguns that do all sorts of different things
right. It is a prime exampleof why the Build engine continues to be
one of the best video game enginesever created, and why it is still

(42:45):
and I actually mean this one withouthyperbole, still being used today, Yeah,
by independent developers across the world tomake games. Yeah. It is
a surprisingly tongue in cheek and campyexperience that, while being very dated by
modern standards, has an irreverent tonethat I think genuinely set the stage for

(43:07):
a lot of games to come afterit. You know, gave us the
Duke as kind of we know himin totality, I guess it would be
the first time that mister Newcombe wasa full fledged and well rounded human being
with his narrow interests. Yeah, and while every other game on the market

(43:28):
was calling a death match, hecalled a duke match. Which is just
some good clever tongue and jeekness. And wouldn't you rather be duking it out
with your friends than death ing itout with them? It's true, I'd
rather duke with anyone than die.Right, Duke don't die, Duke don't
die. And I guess that alsoDuke don't die. Bam see Duke Newcombe

(43:51):
three d Always bet on Duke, something that you always bet on exactly,
always bet on Duke. I thinkthat brings us to the end of this
week's episode. Again, heartfelt apologiesjust all around. This is not not
my finest hour and we're about tohit it. Thank you, guys,

you were like, oh, whereis it going with this? And I
don't know that's the problem. Pleasesave me. Yeah. Hey, this

(44:36):
show is partly a reason for Fredand I to talk to one another.
Largely it is a way for usto share things about game development that we
find interesting, or just games thatwe're playing that we love with y'all.
Something we've been doing a lot ofthat latter part lately. You know,
down the line, we'll probably havemore to talk about our individual projects.
I know you guys are going toget very tired of me talking about my
