Speaker 1 (00:02):
Are you ready to level up?
Speaker 2 (00:03):
Do you wish to live a life of options and
not obligations? You've gone to the right place. Thank you
for stopping on by to hear knowledge nuggets from Coach
Fergie and his top tier guest to help you lean
into your ultimate human potential. Now let's level up with
Coach Fergie.
Speaker 3 (00:20):
Hey Varsity Squad, Welcome back to another powerful edition of
Lovelock Conversations with Coach Fergie with the time to Shine
Today Coaching. I'm your host, Scott Fergson, blessed to be
your gap coach, specialize in performance mental conditioning, working with
business leaders, entrepreneurs, entertainers, athletes, CE suite and students to
help them bridge their success gap to live a life
of options and not obligations. On this platform, we are
stoked to bring you high performers who are not just
(00:41):
chasing and attaining success or be defining it through providing
above and beyond service Squad. This week, we're gonna dive
into some luxury, but I'm gonna give it a little
quick coaching knowledge nugget and let's get real. Luxury isn't
just about shiny things. It's about intention. Every space, every
habit every choice you make. You're designing your life. Here's
the truth. Success doesn't happen by accident. Nobody stumbles into
(01:01):
a world class home, and nobody stumbles into a world
class life. Just like the best renovations in Palm Beach
start with blueprint. Your success starts with a clear vision
and the courage to follow through. My clients know I
lean into standards. Hard goals are just byproducts of your standards.
Just as the gas I'm about to introduced to you
knows that the goal is to nail their client's vision.
With that the standards must be locked in. To do so,
(01:23):
you must always live in alignment with yourself. Luxury, real
luxury is when outside world matches the inside discipline. It's
when your environment reflects the standard you set for yourself. So,
as we dive into today's conversation, I want you to
ask yourself, am I building myself like a cheap flip?
Speaker 1 (01:39):
Or am I investing the time, the care and the
discipline to make it timeless?
Speaker 3 (01:43):
And today we're bringing on a man who defines what
luxury living looks like in Palm Beach. Jonathan Scurry is
the founder and lead designer a Palm Club Design Group,
a design inspired renovation firm that takes homes from ordinary
to extraordinary. With over twenty years of experience and full
scale renovations, high end remodels, and stunning into your your transformations,
John has become the go to visionary for clients who
(02:03):
expect nothing less than excellence. He resides in Palm Beach
with his wife and four children, blending in a worldly
perspective with the elegance and sophistication that defines this region.
His work isn't just about building beautiful spaces, It's about
creating lifestyle experiences that match the prestige and energy of
Palm Beach itself. And I got him right here in
the studio, the legend himself, mister John and John. So,
(02:25):
before we kind of go get into the design world
and stuff, you know, when you're not sketching blueprints or
running projects, where we most likely to find you relaxing
in Palm Beach.
Speaker 4 (02:35):
I have a busy family of four kids. Yeah, so
you'll probably find me running around from sporting event to
school event to keeping up with these kids. Yeah, we've
got eight, ten, twelve, and thirteen.
Speaker 1 (02:50):
Oh gotcha busy. That's very busy.
Speaker 3 (02:53):
So you describe kind of Palm Club as offering a
concierge experience from concept to completion. So what does mean
to you in the context of renovation and how do
you translate that into a client's experience.
Speaker 4 (03:05):
Sure, so, for the majority of our high network clients,
luxury to them comes in the form of time and
time that they are able to take for themselves, not
worrying about the details of their design or renovation. And
Palm Club Design Group is a team of experts that
(03:27):
we have assembled over the years, from designers to contractors
to logistics coordinators that really allow our clients the luxury
of being able to hire us for the project. Sure,
come in for a design presentation and then jet off
to one of their second homes on the other side
(03:48):
of the world, and we will do the heavy lifting
for them actually start to finish turnkey. We've had so
many clients come back and see their house for the
first time after they bought it, never being in the
in the headache of construction, the headache of design, the
headache of material selections.
Speaker 3 (04:06):
We're just the look on their face, right, Yeah, that's
what you kind of strive for. So, you know, Palm
Beach is synonymous with sophistication and style. You know, how
do you balance the regions classic elegance with individual personality
of each homeowner.
Speaker 4 (04:20):
That's a good question. So many of our clients have
unique eclectic style. That's going unique and eclectic style, and
as a on the design side of the business, it's
always trying to figure out that balance between, you know,
(04:40):
what is the right move for the structure of the
house and the aesthetics of the house, but also balancing
the overall aesthetic that the husband wants and the wife wants.
Ninety five percent of our job is I say, it's
marital counseling, and you would think that the majority of
husbands don't have an opinion about what they want the
(05:00):
house to look like and the process, right, That's just
not the case. We find ninety percent of the husband's
are more opinionated than the wise when it comes to
what's happening in the house. So it's just that fine
balance of what people are looking for aesthetically and also
helping them implement that into the home.
Speaker 1 (05:17):
Love it and Squad if you heard that out there.
Speaker 3 (05:20):
He actually does this thing that very few people out
there do and he listens, and you know, being a
coach and whatnot, I'm always listening. I have two years
in one mouth for a reason. But I can just
actually see John leaning in and what I call listening
with his neck, like really listening in and taking the details.
Speaker 1 (05:35):
Down to make sure you have everything right. And I
got that right? You got it? Love that man. So
you're a native of South Africa? Correct?
Speaker 4 (05:42):
That's my business partner, John Hill. Oh my god, So
there's too John. John's very confusing. You get a dynamic
duo of John's.
Speaker 3 (05:48):
Does he ever bring any of his kind of roots
and global perspective into the company you have? Having that
background with the.
Speaker 4 (05:55):
John is more of the logistics for the design and
implementation side of the business, Okay, I'm more of the
visionary and people person going out there and meeting the
folks and bringing the clients in and walking these job sites.
I would say my lead role in the business is
meeting these clients on site when they purchased a home
that they plan on renovating or tearing down and building
(06:17):
sure and just meeting them on site that first time
and really bringing together the vision of what they want
to see. And I really think that Our process is
so unique in the industry because and I used to
be this person candidly where I would go on to
(06:37):
site as a designer, sure, and I would keep my
opinions to myself. I would, you know, really hold back
on the vision because I thought, you know, they haven't
retained me yet. Sure, so I'm kind of giving away
my intellectual property. But I just realized that that was
not my personality. That's not how I do business, That's
not how you know, the nature of my personality is.
(07:00):
I'm a visionary. I love just going onto site for
that very first time and dreaming with the client, right
and that often includes me giving away the farm. I'm
telling you everything. I'm telling you what walls I would
take down, you know, what side of the house I
would blow off. To make an addition, there's a neighborhood
(07:21):
actually in Jupiter that it's pretty funny. The original developer,
I feel like, put the kitchens in the wrong place
in every single one of the models. We've done several
houses in that neighborhood now, and it's shocking for our
clients when I come into the neighborhood and right off
the bat, I'm like, we need to take that kitchen,
We're gonna absolutely eliminate it where it is. We're gonna
flip it to the other side of the house. And
(07:42):
just seeing the shock on their face when on that
very first walk through you're giving them the dream you.
Speaker 3 (07:48):
Noticed in like people like the kitchen like off the
garage because if they come in the garage they can
drop their groceries or whatnot thing because I see a
lot of them down here that are built.
Speaker 1 (07:58):
You're going to walk across the lit room to even
get into the kitchen, right you do.
Speaker 4 (08:03):
We're designing more and more kind of twofold kitchens where
there is a secondary kitchen right off of the garage
with what we call like a costco door where from
the garage you're not having to open a big door
going in and out of the house. You can open
a little door that allows our clients to load their
groceries straight in through this little door into a butler's
(08:26):
kitchen or a butler's pantry, and that typically is a
transition somewhere off of a mudroom and then you walk
into the big, beautiful show kitchen that's the heart of
the home and the heart of the entertaining.
Speaker 3 (08:38):
Gotcha and so you specialize in custom chemetry, we do
within that, and so the kind of light white glove
material delivery. Can you share kind of a standout project
where you push craftsmanship to the next level, like something
just really stands out that the you wowed yourself even.
Speaker 1 (08:54):
Share mom it.
Speaker 4 (08:55):
We actually have a client that absolutely hearts we love
them to death, but they had a kitchen designed that
was probably a three hundred to three hundred and fifty
thousand dollars kitchen and their budget was one hundred to
one hundred and fifty and really beautiful custom design that
(09:17):
they already had in hand from a kitchen company that
they have been previously working with, and just this past
company over designed for their budget.
Speaker 1 (09:26):
Right, Well, it's something you picked up from another it's something.
Speaker 4 (09:29):
We picked up from another company. They had they had
been sold a dream that they couldn't afford. Sure, we
had the task of coming in there and reimagining that space,
giving them as close to what they were expecting for
the budget that they were given, and worked with our
custom cabinet makers to find where we could tweak this
(09:51):
design to really give them ninety eight percent of what
they were looking for on a budget. That was significantly less.
This kitchen turned out absolutely remarkable, is unbelievable the attention
to detail and craftsmanship that went into this kitchen, that
it was a great success story.
Speaker 1 (10:08):
You know, if you're kind of in a discovery time
where you're in there being empathetic through their eyes or
kind of listen.
Speaker 3 (10:13):
To what you're saying it, is there any good question
that you wish they would ask you, but never.
Speaker 4 (10:18):
Do not Necessarily, I'm a talker. I'm long winded, and
I like to draw as much information out from clients
as possible. Sure, and I have a lot of questions
that I asked throughout the process and at the end
of the process that helps us fine tune what we
do and help us get better for the next job.
(10:40):
And one of my most famous questions that I asked
my clients at at the start of construction, halfway through construction,
and at the very end, I asked them what their
favorite thing is that we're doing so far?
Speaker 1 (10:53):
Love it?
Speaker 4 (10:54):
What they wish they would have done differently, and if
they could change something, what would that be. This is midstream, right,
this is at the beginning, midstream and the end. And
the reason I asked that is a lot of times
you will find, you know, when clients first start the process,
they're they're dreaming the space for the first time, and
you know, I'm I'm spitball in new ideas with them,
(11:15):
and we are coming up with a lot of really
creative things on the fly, and they may think of
additional items as they go. For sure, I always say
that design is a journey, not a destination. We're not
trying to get to the end. We're trying to make
the beginning, the middle, and the end a success story
all along the way. And I like asking those questions
(11:35):
because a lot of times a client may have an
idea that's an easy one for me to implement, and
you know, we can make those adjustments at the beginning,
we can make those adjustments in the middle and just
try to stir up that.
Speaker 3 (11:48):
That's the ones that it's a little too late where
you have to put on the different hat and just
kind of put your foot down in a sense.
Speaker 4 (11:54):
Right, Yeah, for sure, and you know there is there
are times where you know a client makes a decision
and they want to backtrack on a decision where it
is too late without dramatically changing something. And design is
a domino effect. You change one thing and forty seven
other things are going to have to.
Speaker 1 (12:11):
Change too of it. Yeah, yeah, for sure?
Speaker 4 (12:14):
Which is you know, when you have that umbrella like
Palm Club has, where we've got the designers, we've got
the logistics coordinators, we've got the project managers, and we've
got the contractors all under one umbrella. Asking those hard
questions at the beginning and at the middle allow us
as a group to collectively determine is this a change
that we can make midstream right now? And what are
(12:35):
those effects that it will have?
Speaker 1 (12:36):
Right?
Speaker 4 (12:37):
Whereas if you're if you're just a designer, it's very
easy to say I actually decided I want to take
out that wall without thinking about the downstream trickle effect
that you're going to have. And you know that that
really is that the leading factor that sets Palm Club
apart from any other construction or design firm, right, is
just having that.
Speaker 3 (12:57):
All Encrement Varsity squad in play for sure, right and squad.
Talking about varsity squad, I'm going to have my good
buddy Steve Austin, I'm blessed from Dynamic Mortgage Team drop
us a little mortgage update on the market and when
we come back, we're going to dig into a little
bit of the design trends, materials use, and how he
ensures his projects feel livable. My good friend John Scurty

Speaker 3 (15:07):
Hey, Steve, thank you so much for the market update.
It's holiday weekend, so everybody kind of be safe out there.
Things are really just kind of coming back around here
in Palm Beach County, and you know, luxury can be intimidating.
So how do you make the process approachable for families
who want elegance without losing the suns of their home.
Speaker 4 (15:25):
Sure, so that's actually a really interesting thing. That's an
interesting market shift that's happening with Pinterest and Instagram. We're
finding more and more that luxury market being so accessible
online to the average consumer that their expectation is for
their house to look like that as well. Right, So
(15:46):
we're being met with more and more folks who are
wanting to implement these luxury aesthetics, luxury finishes and in
an everyday fashion. I myself a my great example of that.
I would love to have high end luxury finishes, marbles,
(16:06):
white oat, carbo floors, you know, just really really beautiful
finishes in my own home, but have to think of
creative ways to implement that for a busy family. Right So,
that's an interesting shift we're seeing happen right in design
and construction right now? Is that that luxury shifting toward
every day attainability.
Speaker 3 (16:25):
And making it accessible to the client. I mean, can
they just call you at any time to get updates
or is it you guys have scheduled times?
Speaker 1 (16:34):
Because I know I'm building a place right now on
the farms.
Speaker 3 (16:36):
Sure, and it's like, you know, I'm doing high end,
I'm doing some luxury and it's share that they have
me on a strict schedule.
Speaker 1 (16:42):
That's how I like it. How are you with you?
For sure?
Speaker 4 (16:44):
We're really methodical, okay. And that's what my business colleague
and business partner, John Hill brings to the team is
his methodical pursuit through the logistics of the projects. And
you know, we have really strict schedules that we adhere
to and hold our construction team to really high standards
(17:06):
and just our process. We are able to succeed in
the speed of our projects and through the fit and
finish of our projects because of our methodical live scheduling
and process. And you know, we find ourselves. We have
this conversation all the time. We find ourselves. We have
(17:29):
found ourselves in the past making exceptions to our process.
And our process is so methodical, right, every single time
we make an exception to our process, something goes around,
something goes sideways. And most of the time, you know,
it's one small exception that we make and then all
of a sudden, we're chasing forty seven things.
Speaker 1 (17:50):
Now that we have to fix.
Speaker 4 (17:52):
So we've really worked as a firm over the last
six to twelve months to not alter our process. And
we ask our clients when you're bringing us on, you're
bringing on experts through the process, trust us through the process.
Design is a process, construction is a process, and in
order for that to be as successful as we would
like for it to be, you have to trust that process.
Speaker 1 (18:13):
Right.
Speaker 3 (18:13):
And you know what I've I'm blessed to coach a
lot of professional athletes, you know, go to their houses
and whatnot. Actually a billionaire char hollow chat, I'll see
you in a few hours here in South Carolina. And
with I go into the place, okay, and some of
the rooms just feel like they're not livable. Okay, you
(18:36):
know what I'm saying. It's sure their whole thing is
to be opulents and be like woohoo, but still make
it feel livable. What do you guys do there at
Palm Beach Design Group to make that happen?
Speaker 1 (18:48):
Sure?
Speaker 4 (18:49):
So we actually have three professional athletes right now that
we're working with actively on their homes, and we're blessed
all all three of these folks want that livable, comfortable,
luxury That's kind of our tagline is implementing those LUs
finishes and those lux features in a very livable, comfortable way.
(19:11):
We also want that wow factor for our clients when
we walk in or when they walk into their new homes.
That's what lands us new projects, is that wow factor
that you can't get without working with a designer. But
our clients also want that to be livable. They want
it to be workable with their kids. They want the
materials to be hardwaring and just feel like a space
(19:34):
that you can entertain in, not like a venue that
you've rented for a party.
Speaker 1 (19:38):
Right.
Speaker 3 (19:38):
And yeah, So I've just noticed like sometimes they'll have
like the designer, I don't know if it would be
the interior designer, they'll throw like throw rugs or you know,
just kind of things different places, Like after the yeah,
I just close up everything. Do you guys give the
owner's tips on how to keep the place looking the
way that you built it? I mean obviously you're gonna
put their own flavor on it, right, sure, Yeah, you
(20:00):
have anything that you kind.
Speaker 1 (20:01):
Of put out there to them in a way. Yeah,
we have.
Speaker 4 (20:05):
Part of our methodical process is we actually have this
really cool online link that we send the clients that
we call it our Fulfillment Guide and our Installation Guide,
and that is a live document that we start at
the very beginning as we're inputting all the materials and
all the selections into our computer system that we have
(20:28):
built from scratch. It as the process goes on and
as we sign off on the design finishes and construction starts.
This live document allows not only the clients to see
when material is arriving, if it's been delivered, so on
and so forth, but there's also an installation guide for
our contractors so they can see in this live document,
(20:49):
but also there are the instructions and care guide. So
that's part of that process of beginning to end where
we try to streamline and be methodical in that process
so that live doctor and stays live as long as
we leave it up. So instead of leaving a big
thick binder for our clients to always thumb through and
flip back through, it's this live almost like a high
(21:10):
end Excel spreadsheet. It's got the pictures of every material
we've selected, a description of it, and then a live
link to the install guide and a live link to the.
Speaker 1 (21:19):
Partner or cereal or whatever.
Speaker 4 (21:21):
And then that way, you know, three years down the road,
if a faucet is loose and they need to get
somebody in to have a look at it and repair it,
they can go right back to their live link and
that repair man who's out, we'll be able to pull
up the original install guide that we put on there
for easy repair, easy maintenance, easy care.
Speaker 1 (21:39):
Sure.
Speaker 3 (21:39):
And you guys are like soup the knots, right, I mean,
we are people here Palm Club Design Group. They're like
design interior designer, you know, kind of something like that.
Like tell us a little bit that you guys do
a lot more than that, from you know, implementation vision
all the way through to probably coming back a year
after to make sure you take care of anything that
the client wants, you know, taking care of us, right,
(22:00):
So tell me a little bit about that for sure.
Speaker 4 (22:02):
So you know, there there are several levels of design
and decorating when it comes to a house, but we
always strive to take that to the nth degree, take
that as far as we can to make the processes
easy for our clients. And we have assembled expert drafts
people in the office, designers in the office, logistics coordinators.
(22:25):
So our process starts on that very first walk through
where I'm working with the client to envision their dream
home through this renovation that we're going to do, and
then we start bringing on our contractors are trusted, embedded
contractors that we have partnered with to do.
Speaker 1 (22:40):
The show up on time.
Speaker 4 (22:41):
They do and that is our expectation. And we've spent
years and years and years assembling who we feel is
the right team for our clients, and they know our
expectations going into it. These contractors enjoy working with us
and partnering with us. They're not dealing with the end
user and sometimes the indecision of a home owner. We're
kind of carrying that burden for the contractor, but through
(23:05):
that vision, through that quotation process of what is that
vision going to cost me? We actually are unique because
we don't design before the pricing. We will envision the
process with you and will envision the design, and then
we get our contractor in immediately to quote that for you.
And that's what's so different is these clients, before they
(23:27):
are committed to a particular design, they already know what
the renovation is going to costs. We create those parameters
right from the beginning, and.
Speaker 3 (23:35):
That leads correct.
Speaker 4 (23:39):
I hear so many clients come to us because they've
worked with a previous designer and you know, maybe they
have a million dollar budget to renovate their home, but
the designer designed something that's three or four million dollars.
So we take that guesswork out of it, We take
that stress out of it and get the contract locked
in and then we start designing based on the dream
(24:00):
and the contract. Love it and from that point it's
it should be clear saying.
Speaker 3 (24:05):
Right and squad that you don't hear too much of
that the pricing up front. Again, me being in the
business in twenty seven years now, it's like you do
you get a lot of headaches from builders that will
kind of flip the script on you with the price
at the end. So that is very very very nice
to hear, and so kind of as we wrap this
up a little bit, you know someone is leading this
(24:27):
this team and raising a family of for you know
how your roles as designer, leader and father kind of
inform one another, meaning like how do you like I
don't believe in balance. I think balance is junk. I
believe in harmony. You know, different things are harmonic in life. Right,
hence my book coming out Harmonic Hustle. You appad there.
So with that being said, like, how do you keep
(24:48):
everything in harmony with with what you're doing?
Speaker 4 (24:50):
You said your book is harmonic hustle, Yes, sir, that is.
That's a great way to describe my life through family
and through business. But and you know there is, with
four kids and owning a construction company, life is chaos
on both sides. Construction is chaos, Raising four kids is chaos.
(25:12):
It's all about controlling the chaos, and we do that
through through our tried and true systems and methods. And
you know, four kids you have to implement some of
those same methods that you have controlling a huge team
and clients. Yeah, for sure, for sure. So just controlling
(25:33):
the chaos would be a great way to sum up
my parenting and business style.
Speaker 3 (25:38):
So when it's all said and done, how does John
one is dash remember that little line in between your
incarnation date and your expiration date, your life date and
death date. Hopefully just wait on the line, brother, But
sure so does he want to remember?
Speaker 4 (25:52):
I just want to be remembered as a nice and
honest person. And that's also not something you see in
our industry a lot, and that's what you know, I
really want to bring to all aspects of my life.
It's just honesty, integrity and just just being a nice
person there uplifting everybody around me and really creating that
(26:16):
that team atmosphere helping each other.
Speaker 3 (26:22):
You know, because here in Florida it's you know, it's
kind of a sunny place for shady people. Love it
that you are kind of like separating yourself from that.
And so how can we find you?
Speaker 4 (26:33):
Sure, give us a follow on Instagram Pump Club Design
