Speaker 1 (00:02):
Are you ready to level up?

Speaker 2 (00:03):
Do you wish to live a life of options and
not obligations? You've gone to the right place. Thank you
for stopping on by to hear knowledge nuggets from Coach
Fergie and his top tier guest to help you lean
into your ultimate human potential.

Speaker 3 (00:17):
Now let's level up with Coach Fergee. Hey, Versy Squad,
Welcome back to another powerful edition of level Up Conversations
with Coach Fergie, where we bring in high performers who
are not only chasing and attaining success, we're redefining it
through providing above and beyond service. So starting my coaching
knowledge nugget off this week talking about imposter syndrome. I
mean we all suffer from it. I mean, who am

(00:38):
I you know, to have this show right now being
blessed to speak to you? Who am I to have
in the five to nine Guy in the morning Brian
Mudd that's producing the show? Who am I to coach
professional athletes? Who am I to speak on stages to thousands?
So many people seem to attach their confidence to their abilities,
when really we should be attaching our confidence to our
intentions is to be curious and serve people, to help

(01:02):
them lean into their ultimate human potential. When you show
up with a pure heart, when your goal is to serve, lead,
make an impact, that's something that no one can take
away from you. It's solid, it's lasting because no matter
what the outcome is, if your intentions are good and
you're staying accountable to yourself, you're winning. And that kind
of confidence that's real, that's unshakable. And speaking of making

(01:23):
an impact and living a life of intentionality, that is
exactly what my guests today embodies. A man who defines
what it means to serve and protect at the highest level.
Dan Simmons is a former US Army Green Beret, a
true warrior and patriot whose career was built in some
of the toughest, most dangerous environments on this planet. But
what stands out even more is than his tactical skill

(01:44):
and battlefield experience is his heart, his unshakable love for
his country, his beautiful wife, Victorian, his family, and his
drive to protect the people he cares about. Dan Dan's
not just about missions, He's about meaning. His co founder
of Black Lag Protection Group, Dan takes that elite special
forces mindset he uses it to guard lives, combat human
trafficking and bring real security to those who need it most.

(02:07):
He's a strategist, a protector, and a man on a
mission and I can't wait for you to hear from him.
And I'm also blessed to coach him. I've been coaching
him for about a year now and the steps I
don't know if he needs me, but the steps he's
taken is just unbelievable with growing his company in him
as a human being. Dan, thank you so much for
coming on. Brother. Please introduce yourself to the squad out there.
But first, what's your favorite color? And why?

Speaker 1 (02:28):
Favorite color? Probably gotta go with red red.

Speaker 3 (02:31):
Yeah, go mode. Yeah, I feel you, brother. Now, Dan's
we're not going to go too much into the combat stuff.
He can share that for another show. But I really
wanting to talk about really is, you know, his life
of intentionality and kind of like what being a protector
is and what do you feel the way you hear
the word protector? What does that mean to you, not
just in combat but in life.

Speaker 4 (02:51):
Well, it means a lot of things. To me, I'd say,
first and foremost, it it encompasses the physical security aspect
of what I do. But you know more importantly, probably
the intentionality of what I do. Yes, I own a
security company, but really what I do for a living
is I take care of people, and I do that

(03:12):
in a variety of ways. When I was in my
military service, I was a Special Forces medic and so
I took care of people with my weapons and my medicine.
And then as I'm currently out of the military back
in the civilian world, I'm still doing that with my
abilities as a Green Beret in the security environment. You know,

(03:33):
most importantly, we're trying to build relationships of trust with
our clients, and that's really what that handshake is all about.
It's more than just having a static security guard standing
in place, but it's it's a relationship of trust. And
then you know, also I'm a coach as well. Are
really excited about that. I just there's there's so much

(03:56):
job satisfaction in helping people reach their potential on their
goals and seeing them succeed.

Speaker 3 (04:02):
Yeah, it's a beautiful thing what you do. And like
I said, you've I'm not gonna say you've come a
long way, because you've went far, but just like in
the living intentionally and seeing what you've grown into a
little bit. You know, it's it's mind blowing for people.
And I know that you know, I'll throw this out there.
You've protected the second richest man on this planet, you know,
I mean you have this is this guy is highly,

(04:23):
highly sought after. So if you're out there, squad and
you know somebody that's looking for protection, make sure you
can get a hold of me A five six one
four four zero three three zero, And I'm happy to
put you in touch with Black Fag Protection Group and Dan.
You've operated in some of the highest stakes environments. Imagine
like legit bro. You know, I've know the stories. We're
not going to dive deep into those, but what's something

(04:45):
you learned in those moments that you carry with you
today into your everyday life.

Speaker 4 (04:50):
That none of us are none of us are guaranteed tomorrow.
Sure right, if that's If there's one thing I learned
throughout my time in the military, is U you know one,
I'm crystal clear on what a man is willing to
do to another man, and I'm also very clear on
we should be living every day like it's our last,
because none of us are guaranteed tomorrow, you know, And

(05:12):
so I not only take that into my business. But
I also take that approach into how I treat people.
You know, if I don't know, I'm not entirely positive
on the impression I make on everyone that I meet.

Speaker 3 (05:24):
But you know, I squat he's imposing. He's a tat
it up man. And I'll have a picture on the
Instagram page if you want to take a look at
this handsome dude. But no, I feel you, brother, Yeah.

Speaker 4 (05:36):
I You know, if people meet me in the last
thing they ever, you know, remember about me is that
I wasn't what they expected despite my rough exterior look,
and that at the end of the day, I'm a
kind person and I legitimately do care about people's issues
and helping them find valuable solutions.

Speaker 3 (05:57):
Absolutely, you've been there for me in a couple of things.
You know, we've been there for out there. You know,
a couple of things are good, buddy, Jeremy Howard, and
so what inspired you then to come on a co flag?
It's kind of a rertoical question, but what what was
the thing that says, listen, I'm gonna You've protected this
country at the highest level and now you want to
step in and co found you know, black flag protection group,

(06:18):
and does that mission with that protection group kind of
keep that warrior spirit alive?

Speaker 1 (06:23):
It does?

Speaker 4 (06:24):
It does because you know, there's a there's a lot
of security companies out there, and there's a lot of
there's a lot of great ones out there too, And
I think what sets us apart is is really our
core values that that we founded Black Flag on. And uh,
those are loyalty, integrity, and intensity. I'm sure I'll get
some chuckles about the intensity part, but I'll explain what.

Speaker 1 (06:46):
I mean on those.

Speaker 4 (06:47):
Yeah, please, So what loyalty means to me is that
I've always got your back no matter what, sure and what.
Now that's again I talked about we have we're building
relationships of trust.

Speaker 1 (06:59):
Right.

Speaker 4 (07:00):
Part of that loyalty is you know, you're not going
to put me in a situation where I have to
do something, uh that would violate my own personal code
of conduct.

Speaker 1 (07:12):
Right.

Speaker 4 (07:13):
And also you know you're you're trusting me with the
things that you hold most deer in your life. And
and I'm trusting you not to put you in a
situation where I have to show you the full extent
of my value.

Speaker 1 (07:27):
Ay from that, wou stay away from that?

Speaker 4 (07:30):
You know, because at the end of the day, like
I'm going to remain the same person should something go
down in an extreme case, but uh, you know, most
people are don't put themselves in a situation where they
think about how they're going to react, and so they're
they're they're not going to be the same man that
they were before. And so I've always got your back
no matter what. But also too, like I will hold

(07:52):
you accountable for your actions in public. You don't have
to worry. I'm going to have your back. But if
you put me in a situation i'm uncomfortable with, I'm
most certainly going to have a conversation with you afterwards
about it. I would expect my clients to do the
same thing with me. Absolutely, integrity, I feel like speaks
for itself, Like I will never lie to you, and

(08:13):
I expect you to never lie to me. Like the
only way that any of us can truly move forward
is with the truth. No sugarcoating, none of that right,
just just the brutal, honest truth, and then intensity we're
either all in or or all out. There's no fifty
percent seventy five percent associated with black Flag. It's either

(08:34):
we're one hundred and ten percent, or we're not doing
it at all. Sure, we're just not going to put
our name on something that we don't believe in. And
so I think, you know, having a set of strong
core values like that is really it separates us from
other companies really kind of speaks to our level of
commitment to our clients.

Speaker 3 (08:54):
Absolutely, you've, like I said, you've protected you know, Larry Elson,
you know in his family? Are you also te the
Tape Brothers And they were just here in Florida? So
how did that kind of go? Tell us a little
story about how that kind of went, because you know,
there's mixed bag in here. They came probably the best
state maybe us in Texas, probably the two states that
they could come to. But how did that like go?
What was that experience?

Speaker 1 (09:15):
Like?

Speaker 4 (09:16):
You know, I've always been a big fan of the
Tape Brothers, mostly because some of their core values aligned
very much aligned with mine. With integrity, right, They're they're
out there speaking their truth. And you know, I'm not
gonna say I agree with everything they say, but I
think in principle he's they're they're they're on the right track, right,
The only toxic, toxic masculinity out there is is weak men. Sure,

(09:39):
those that's what's toxic. And you know they were very
much face value. They treated me and my other thing
very much so yeah, very much so okay and very
down to earth people. And uh, I think they're just
not afraid to tell uh and speak what's on their mind.
And that's not okay with a lot of people. Well,

(10:00):
given the you know that a heavy wook culture that's
developed over the past few years. But absolutely, and I
won't I wouldn't work for them or with them if
they if I felt they mistreatd.

Speaker 3 (10:12):
The values and the integrity and exact and stuff like that. Absolutely.
So you have seen, you know, humanity at its worst. Okay,
we've said that a couple of times tonight. So but
there's two words that I know you hate most of all,
and it's human trafficking, right, and you have a very
big vendetta against that. I know you've went on ops
without sharing too much about going and helping out in

(10:34):
that arena, right, But how do you stay grounded and
keep your heart in place in the without really because
there's a difference between reacting and responding like you're a responder, right,
A lot of people see stuff like that, and they
reract like, how do you stay grounded when you see
that kind of stuff and been through what you've been through.

Speaker 4 (10:53):
Well, at the end of the day, you have to
take you have to operate on facts, right, and with
a topic like that, it's easy to get carried away
with your emotions and rightfully so, right, I'm a father
of four, and so you know, if it were one
of my kids, I can certainly understand and empathize and
sympathize with, you know, parents that are out there with

(11:15):
missing children. And you know, I guess it's really just
a lot of time in the military, a lot of
time downrange, right, you know, so a lot of times
things don't go the way they plan to go when
you're downrange. And you know, been been a part of
some times where we went back out the wire with

(11:37):
high emotions and anger and you know that was with
belt fed machine guns and in armored vehicles and it.

Speaker 1 (11:43):
Still didn't go that well.

Speaker 4 (11:44):
Right, So you know it if it didn't go well
in that environment, you know back home on us soil,
like it's it's it's it's not going to go any better, right,
So you just trying to keep a levelhead and being
not only a master of chaos like and being able
to create it, but also a master in the chaos
of keeping that calm.

Speaker 1 (12:06):
Uh.

Speaker 4 (12:06):
It's there's a saying and as a medic, staying cool,
calm and collected, and it's not it's it's important for
your patient, sure, so that they don't see you freaking
out right, not trying to change their their vital levels
or anything like that that would be detrimental to them.
But it's also keeping your keeping calm in that in

(12:28):
that chaos, and and and managing it properly, dealing with
just the facts, leaving leaving all subjectivity outside of it.

Speaker 3 (12:35):
It's that that's pretty raw, that's real because you can't
and again I've been in some situations too where you
can't show as the medic. You're like, you old crap dude,
like you're thinking it, but you don't show it because
you don't want their blood prejudice biking. So the blood
just keeps going out. And now I feel you with that,
So Squat, make sure you stay tuned because I got

(12:55):
some awesome I'm gonna take Dan through our leveling up
Lightning round and also a few more questions about what
kind of his purpose also myths and misconceptions about executive protection.

Speaker 1 (13:04):
So will see you in just a bit.

Speaker 3 (13:56):
Financing hey, squad we are fact we leve off conversations With.
Coachberg he brought to you By Revolution. Mortgage and you, Know,
dan can you help us maybe walk through how you
can like you've kept your, mind, calm focus and locked
in when things were at the most, chaotic and you,

(14:17):
said being a master in the, chaos how can other
men that want to be? Men you Know layman's like,
myself Maybe brian and you know other people around, here
like what can we? Do they'll kind of be a
master within our own.

Speaker 1 (14:30):
Chaos, WELL i do a lot of.

Speaker 4 (14:31):
Visualization i've been doing that pretty regularly SINCE i played
sports in high school and so AND i also have
a lot of very difficult conversations with. Myself and it's
important that you do those things and be brutally honest
with yourself about how you kind of are going to
react to certain. Things you need to play those scenarios

(14:52):
out in your head before you're involved in, them, Right
LIKE i had visualized and talked to myself through and
loads of combat, experiences especially like as a, medic because
oftentimes things are you, know.

Speaker 1 (15:06):
They they look really.

Speaker 4 (15:08):
Bad but the crazy thing is about, that, though is
is what looks the worst is probably not what's killing. Them,
sure and so you have to stay focused and, yeah
it's just you have to be have to be willing
to have those tough. Conversations you don't want to be,
uh you, know if you're if you're a married man
and you're out at a bar with your, buddies, right

(15:29):
you need to have had that conversation with yourself about
how you are not going to approach an attractive woman
in the bar or entertainment before it, happens, right, right
because when you've already left the bar with her and
you're going to do whatever you're gonna, do it's it's
it's too late to have that, conversation. Right so in
the in the environments That i've operated, in that's no.

(15:49):
Different so it's it's exactly the same type of, situation
although more, extreme, Right but it's it's you can carry
those principles out through through you, know any profession that
you that you.

Speaker 3 (16:02):
Do and visualization is. KEY i mean you AND i
go through exercises together sometimes about visualization and what we
want to manifest and and put out to the world
and be open to that reciprocation to get it back.
Right and so executive, Protection, Okay, LIKE i know you've
told me stories about you, know anybody that's a mall
cop out. There i'm not out here to like bash on,

(16:23):
you but you, Know dan's told me, some you, know
kind of funny. Stories but what what is the kind
of the misconception about the level that you bring to
executive protection versus you, know just another you know security. Company,
like what kind of things Differentiate Black flag from other security.

Speaker 4 (16:39):
Companies, WELL i think a lot of people kind of
naturally resort to your larger security companies like Like, Allied.

Speaker 1 (16:47):
Right nothing wrong with, them nothing wrong with Them Server.

Speaker 4 (16:51):
Purpose they're a massive, company they employ thousands of, people,
sure but they they don't tend to work in the
same environment that THAT i.

Speaker 1 (17:00):
Do.

Speaker 4 (17:01):
RIGHT a lot of what makes our company different is
is the people that we have.

Speaker 3 (17:08):
Got to be kind of a soft special.

Speaker 4 (17:09):
Operator, yeah, absolute and AND i think a lot of
people think they've got a certain price in mind where
they may have even want something h. Extreme but like
What Black flag brings is is tier, one tier two
level military, operators, right and you, know when you if
that's the best That america has to, Offer, right all

(17:32):
of these guys have combat, experience a lot of them
are retired, military common common the, chaos, right and that's kind, of,
uh it kind of goes with you, know the things
that we preach at at Black flag to our to
our employees is is maintaining that, uh you, know elite.

Speaker 1 (17:52):
Status there's a lot of people that want to be.

Speaker 4 (17:54):
Elite they want to be able to claim that but
they're not really they don't really have a good grasp
of exact actly what that. Means and and if you're
not performing at the highest, level if you're if you
were in a room and you are the highest, performer
you were in the wrong. Room Right, like even Where
i'm at right, Now i'm still one of the most
humble people that in the room BECAUSE i don't look

(18:17):
at anyone and think there's nothing THAT i can learn from.
THAT i even you, know in my military, CAREER i
went to ranger school like thirty five years, old AND
i got, like, yeah they're like what you, KNOW i
had multiple combat tours at that. Time you, Know i'm
getting my first look at master, sergeant you, Know AND
i GOT i GOT i got asked, like what are

(18:37):
you doing at rangers? School you, Know i'm fifteen years
into my career at the, time and you, know AND
i told the first tron AND i, said, so, well
green breads are supposed to be masters of the. Basics
AND i didn't learn patrolling in ranger. SCHOOL i learned
it in the qualification. Course so if you guys are
of the masters of this, skill Then i'm here to

(18:58):
learn like everyone. Else and he was blown away by,
that and despite the fact THAT i was the most
senior person and not by it just, age but rank
as well in that. Company you, KNOW i never got
made the class LEADER i. GOT i got to be
a gray man as long AS i could man BECAUSE i.

(19:19):
DIDN'T i, WASN'T i wasn't never really looking for a leadership.

Speaker 1 (19:24):
Position. Yeah i'm just there to do the best THAT
i can.

Speaker 3 (19:26):
Do become a better version of.

Speaker 1 (19:28):
Yourself, yeah, ways right, Right so.

Speaker 3 (19:32):
You know What i'm. Gonna i'm gonna kind of could
blast through the lightning round BECAUSE i want to get to,
it Because i'm interested in how you answer some of
These you AND i have talked about, them like probably
fifteen twenty minutes over lunches or coaching. Sessions even you
know some of, These but you got five seconds today
with no, explanations AND i promise you they can be
answered that. Way you, ready? Okay level Of. Dan so

(19:53):
what is the best leveling up advice you've ever?

Speaker 1 (19:55):
Received? Focus laser being, Focused.

Speaker 3 (19:58):
Share one of your personal habits that can beats to your.
Success time.

Speaker 1 (20:02):
Management love.

Speaker 3 (20:03):
It so there's a. Book you see me on the,
Street i'm walking Down you're you, Know fergie looks like you's.
Adultrums what book have you read that really flipped a
switch that you'd want me to read if you saw
me in that?

Speaker 1 (20:14):
Mood you are a.

Speaker 3 (20:16):
Badass yeah that's. Great you're most commonly used emoji when you,
text hang. Loose awesome nicknames growing? Up ooh really just went?
By dan didn't really have any nicknames growing. Up and
they hidden talent in our in our superpowers that nobody knows.

Speaker 1 (20:31):
About oh, WOW i don't, know, Sorry. VICTORIA i can
draw really.

Speaker 3 (20:38):
Well, yeah awesome chest checkers With monopoly. Chess go to
ice cream flavor strawberry sandwich called The Big dan special.
Operator build that. Sandwich what are we? Eating roast beef and?
Turkey love it favorite charity and our. Organization you'd like
to give your time and or money to my?

Speaker 1 (20:55):
NONPROFIT i love inspiring, life love.

Speaker 3 (20:58):
It Love? It and decade of music, sixties, seventies eighties or.

Speaker 1 (21:02):
Nineties i'm gonna have to go with, Seventies love, It
Love It.

Speaker 3 (21:06):
Now we did The lightning. ROUND i love the seventies
TWO a lot of. STORIES i knew how to tell stories,
then you. Know and they listened to an iraq a lot.
Myself you, know you listen to The eagles or you,
Know croachy and they tell the stories in, it you,
know WHICH i. Love SO i usually do the lightning round.
Later BUT i want to kind of leave the flour
to you to tell us about the we got. About

(21:28):
can you do it in about four, minutes kind of
The Shine Your? Boots BECAUSE i know you're authoring a
book coming, out AND i know THAT i was there
when you were on stage telling the story just BEFORE
i even knew, you and you asked me to coach.

Speaker 1 (21:40):
You, yeah, yeah, YEAH i was.

Speaker 3 (21:42):
SQUAT i was losing, it, Dude so to here a little,
BIT i know you got to condense it.

Speaker 4 (21:47):
Today but, yeah so author in a book right now
Called shine Your Own, BOOTS A Greenberry's pursuit Of.

Speaker 1 (21:54):
Excellence AND.

Speaker 4 (21:57):
I don't want it to be like another military book
out there WHERE i just tell a bunch of cool
stories and, like hey look at, me blah blah, blah
that's not that's not really. Me and a lot of
the STUFF i can't talk about. Anyway SO i wanted
to be able to give back to the community and
particularly guys that are transitioning out of the military And
so essentially the structure of the book is going to

(22:20):
be what'll be my life from as a child through
my military career up until. Now But i'm gonna break
that down into different mindsets and the different mindsets THAT
i had at different points in my life and how
they either served me or didn't serve. Me and, so you,
know for for, instance you, know having having that warrior

(22:42):
mindset when you know you're just deploying every six, months,
Right that's that's an important mindset to have because it
keeps you, alive, yeah, right but it's not it's not
too productive back in The states when you you, know
when you've been home for two and a half for
years and now you've got time to think about all
that that same mindset that's not going to serve you
in the same. Way and a lot of the coping

(23:03):
mechanisms that you, use you, know throughout your career and
at different points in your life aren't aren't always going
to work in every. Situation AND i found myself in
that that same situation WHEN i got back from my
last combat tour and just had at a really difficult
time cutting that switch. Off and you, know up until,
THEN i had prided myself over the years about the

(23:25):
MOMENT i step off that, plane that switch goes, off
and husband and father and there's a lot of guys
that are really struggling in the, community and so especially with,
transition you.

Speaker 3 (23:35):
Know, yeah survivors, remorse you get a lot of some of.

Speaker 4 (23:38):
That, yeah and a lot of and a lot of,
guys you, know they they they lack purpose when they get.
Out AND i fell in that same trap for a little,
while and, UNFORTUNATELY i have some great people that surround,
me AND i was able to get through. That so you, know,
ultimately like if if my book helps one guy, go holy,
crap there's there's somebody out there THAT i went through

(24:00):
the same Thing i'm going through right, now and it
helps them get through, it then it's a win for.

Speaker 2 (24:04):
Me.

Speaker 3 (24:05):
Right and there was a certain person that you kind
of lost on that, tour was.

Speaker 1 (24:09):
There Not, yeah, well not on that, tour but in your.

Speaker 3 (24:12):
Past. Sure.

Speaker 4 (24:13):
Yeah the Name shine Your Own boots comes from my
best Friend Sean, thomas who died back in twenty. SEVENTEEN
i was at his funeral with my daughters and my
wife up up At Arlington National cemetery and it was
JUST i mean It's, february so it's just unloading snow

(24:35):
on us up, there and not like you, know it's
