Speaker 1 (00:08):
Hey, Mercy Squad, welcome back to a powerful edition of
Lovelock Conversations with Coach Berg where we bring in high
performers who are not just chasing and attaining success, but
redefining it through providing above and beyond service. So we're
going to launch every one of our shows really with
a kind of a coaching knowledge that I get that
I kind of worked with with possibility client during the
week or something I just kind of came up with
(00:29):
or actually learn, And I'm going to regurgitate right out
to you squad out there. But ourca Lucus the Greek
ancient Greek poet that said, we don't rise to the
level of our expectations, we fall to the level of
our training. It's time to get real, squad. I'm talking
about goals and more importantly, standards.
Speaker 2 (00:46):
Goals.
Speaker 1 (00:46):
Yeah, they sound sexy, big dreams, big visions. I'm all
for it. Living a life of options and not obligations
cannot be attained without setting big, scary goals.
Speaker 2 (00:55):
But here's the truth, peeps.
Speaker 1 (00:56):
You don't rise to your goals, you drop to level
of your daily standard. The way you wake up, how
you handle the tough days, how you show up when
no one's watching. That's what builds the life you want.
So what I'm saying is, if you're not where you
want to be, it's not a goal problem, it's a
standard problem. So don't just set bigger goals, set stronger standards,
and then stick to them like your future and life
(01:17):
depends on it, because frankly speaking, it does. And a
real quick example is someone wants to drop some pounds,
drop some weight, get healthy. Doctor gave them a little
death sentence or something. You know, like, you can set
the goal to drop the weight, but if you're not
reading the labels and watching what you put in your mouth,
doing the exercise, hiring the right people around you, having
the right squad, those are your standards. If their standards
(01:37):
aren't on point, you're not going to reach the goals.
And speaking of standards, today's guest has some of the
highest standards that I've ever known. He's a true force,
a titan in the mortgage industry here in Palm Beach.
I'm talking about my good friend Steve Austin from Revolution
Mortgage and a quick caveat.
Speaker 2 (01:53):
He's also the.
Speaker 1 (01:54):
Sponsor of our show. Some very very blessed for that
So beyond the boardroom and loan applications, there's a man
of character, a devoted husband to his wife, Gabby, for
daddy to his fur baby Sly and body. See if
someone who's built a life around values, vision and perseverance.
And I'm also blessed to have him trust me to
coach him with his mindset work that he does in life.
(02:16):
So we're going to dive into his wins, setbacks, the lessons,
and the heart behind it all. So let's get ready
to level up. Steve, thank you so much for coming
on and introduce yourself to the Palm Beach Squad varsity
squad out there. But first tell us the superpower that
you might have that maybe nobody knows about until now.
Speaker 3 (02:33):
I think, well, one of the superpowers that I say
people will know about is I'm kind of a movie
quote all American. If I've seen it, I can probably
remember it. So growing up, that's always been a tax
or call from him, but it's hey, what's that line
from that movie? And that's all they want. They'll hang
up after that. That was they're at a party or
something needed to just needed the info.
Speaker 2 (02:53):
I did that with you.
Speaker 1 (02:54):
A tropic thunder I was like, do what was that
line from Traffic Thunder? And you nail that wentder the
Robert Downey junior lines.
Speaker 2 (02:59):
Bro.
Speaker 3 (02:59):
Yeah, I'm still trying to figure out how to monetize it,
but it's there.
Speaker 1 (03:04):
Yeah, So let's get a little bit, you know, to
the roots. Let's take us back before the mortgage world,
before the leadership rockstar that you are. But who's the
younger Steve Austin. I know that you threw the pig
skin around, you know. I think you took Dwyer deeper
into the playoffs football factory, then Jeper deeper in the
playoffs than ever had been before.
Speaker 2 (03:24):
But let's get a little bit to the roots, man.
Speaker 3 (03:25):
Yeah, so I will give credit to the classes before me.
They did make it to the state championship. My senior year.
We lost in the third round. But you know, I
think I did my thing back in the day. So yeah,
that younger Steve was definitely sports based. Football was life.
I think any athlete down here can can probably attest
(03:49):
that we went to school school as a part of it,
but you know, football was everything. You couldn't tell us
that we weren't going to the next level, and the
next level after that, so focus was everything into that.
And yeah, college college based footbaul was life. That's kind
of the easy answer, right, Yeah.
Speaker 1 (04:06):
So you went to school in Stonybrook, right, New York,
up north and the snow and you're from South Florida.
Did you ever see snow before that?
Speaker 3 (04:14):
I had in like North Carolina when we were like
ten out there for somebody. Yeah, I don't even think
it snowed. The snow was like already there. So yeah,
New York was the real culture shock love.
Speaker 1 (04:24):
How about like parallels between you know, like I didn't
know that. I won't share too much of our coaching sessions,
but we talked a little about parallels between your athletic
days and also how to parlay that into growing the
fastest growing mortgage company in South Florida right now. It's
just it is, And so like, tell me some of
the parallels that you use from your athletic.
Speaker 2 (04:45):
Days into the you know what you're doing now.
Speaker 3 (04:47):
Yeah, the it took a long time to figure out
how to carry those skills and attributes into this professional world.
Because I don't have to tackle anybody on regular base,
I'm not getting hit. I don't have to hit anybody
you know, athletic feats don't close the mortgage. So in
that what I learned to transition was the dedication that
(05:08):
I was able to put into the sport, you know,
understanding timelines, being on a schedule, being accountable, and taking
care of your responsibilities in the sport, the world, the career.
It's helped me a lot in what this is because
in real estate mortgages there's a lot of people that
are involved in the process. I can't do everything myself
(05:32):
so much like in football back at Duir, you know,
when I was the quarterback, I couldn't throw the ball
and catch the ball. I mean maybe if I practiced
hard enough, but probably not. So I had to trust
the guys that were out there and the team with
me that we wrote this play, this is what we're running.
I know where you're going to be. You know I'm
gonna throw the ball and we have that agreement. You know,
(05:52):
trusting the team around you has been big and the
success we've built.
Speaker 1 (05:56):
It's that tough like I find myself, like you'd probably
know this, my micromanaging myself, parkraging sometimes my clients, and
because I want the best for everybody. How have you
really learned to hand that off. Like, what was the click?
Because I know with being QB one and at that
level that it's hard to hand that ball off.
Speaker 2 (06:14):
So what what really clicked for you to do it?
Speaker 4 (06:16):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (06:17):
It actually I think when I clicked more into understanding
back in that QB one mindset of this is how
you run a successful offense. This is how you run
a successful team. This is how you you know, you
score and you win championships and getting into mortgages. Especially
when you start out, it's very easy. You do everything
yourself right, You're not that busy. You handle a file
from start to finish. You can do a lot of
(06:38):
things you have time, but as you grow, you know bandwidth,
there's only so much time in a day. You can
only do so many files yourself successfully and go get
the same amount of files for the next month. So
kind of shifting back in that mindset, well, I need
to hand the ball off and then carry out the
rest of my play action or like I do have
the ball to make sure that that file or you know,
(06:59):
ball carrier is thriving in what the play actually is
the goal line. Yeah, so it actually is more natural
to pass it off and kind of lead and monitor
and you know, call the play and hey, this is
what we're running and keep people accountable. It was just
hard to shift into that, and you know, finding the
right people for the positions is always tricky.
Speaker 1 (07:18):
So when you because you were with a company when
I first met you over ten years ago, it's crazy
how long we've known each other, and you kind of
were tapped by revolution to kind of really open up
and really expand down here, Like what do you think
set you apart as a leader to break ground in
a new market like that?
Speaker 3 (07:33):
So I think for me, it's I've always been interested
in the entire picture of what the mortgage business is.
What does it really take from sales to post closing,
funding and servicing. I know there's there's more to it
than just close alone, get paid, you know, move on.
For me, I always wanted that, and candidly, anybody who
(07:53):
gets into these you know, branch manager roles, running branches,
running companies, it's because you did some amount of sales
at some point. Sure they approach you with that, and
the approach is very sexy. It's how much did you make?
Oh double it? And then you have people work under
you and you make money off of them as well.
And it sounds great and it's like sure, boom millionaire
right right overnight. It's not quite that easy. And part
(08:15):
of the responsibility of becoming that branch manager as being
that manager leader to the people that you bring under
you to lead and try to bring them along to
their own success. So I think what a lot of
branch managers do is they don't really want that compromise
of my time and my deals to somebody else. So
a lot of what I do in my day to
(08:35):
day is actually helping and supporting and growing our team
outside of just focusing on Steve Austin and what he
wants to do.
Speaker 4 (08:43):
In a day to day.
Speaker 1 (08:44):
It's kind of hard sometimes when you're like man, that
would have been onmind and it would be like a
little bit more money in my pocket. But being able
to you know, either do it for it, dump it,
or delegate it, really, you know, helps out and that
you've gotten a lot better.
Speaker 2 (08:57):
I'm going to tell you that from we working together.
Speaker 1 (09:01):
You know, so you know the mindset and the beliefs
that you had when you're younger and you're young buck
in the business and kind of going in rocking and rolling.
So what belief did you have then that you feel
like you've totally outgrown now in the market, you know
or life.
Speaker 4 (09:16):
Yeah, gosh, so much.
Speaker 3 (09:17):
I mean definitely the material has definitely gone way lower
on the priority list, where like having the sexy car
or the watches, you know, jewelry things like that. I
like nice things, but it's a it's so much less
important than it was as a younger. I'll call myself
a younger man, but I was just a kid. Yeah,
you know, and you look back in your twenties being
(09:38):
in my thirties now and like, what an idiot?
Speaker 2 (09:41):
Right?
Speaker 3 (09:42):
But you know, I think the the sales part of it,
you know, getting into this. The job is technically, you know,
as a loan originator loan officer is sales, but it's
really not that, you know, it's what we do for
people in building that no like and trust relationship of
helping somebody get through the milestone that they're trying to
accomplish in the real estate world, whether it's their first purchase,
(10:04):
their vacation home, their fifteenth investment property. These are big
things in big steps and checks that people are sending
and writing for these actions, So that just money driven
sales thing of Oh, this is a transaction, get it
in the pipeline. It's one more number. Go, Like there's
a heartbeat behind it, right, go crush commission great, Like listen,
(10:25):
we all need to make money to live. But I
understand more now, like what this is as a whole
and what the long game is of what we really
want to do and build here. So yeah, the single
transaction stuff is way down in the.
Speaker 1 (10:36):
List, and you're arguably working with the biggest investment that
they're going to have to that point in their life.
Speaker 2 (10:41):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (10:41):
You know what I'm saying is like whether it's first
time home buyers or their fifth house, right, you're doing
so there's a lot of emotion evolved. So being a
professional like yourself, you have got to remove the emotion
out from yourself yet still make them comfortable with you,
right right. What's the challenge in that?
Speaker 3 (10:57):
I think it's, you know, one of the other like
very important skills in this. I mean, I guess in
life really, but I'm fortunate to I feel like I
have it where I can kind of walk into any room,
I can associate it and relate to just about anybody.
And I think an important thing to remember in what
we do is, you know, it may be you're as
as the lender right it, maybe you're one hundredth transaction
(11:18):
of the year. But this could be the first time
these people have ever bought a house. Sure, so right
me looking at the market or understanding all the programs
and processes because I do it day in and day out,
it's still their first time. So I have to meet
them where they're at with their level of understanding with it.
Do they need me to hold their hand every day?
Do we need to break this down completely? Is this
(11:40):
their tenth one and they just want to know, Like,
just text me a thumbs up. I don't need to
hear the stuff. Send the stuff like we're good, Like,
I'm going to meet you where you're at. Want to
go high level, talk about the market you want to
we're starting from the bottom base it.
Speaker 4 (11:52):
We can do that too.
Speaker 1 (11:53):
You have your doctors or engineers. I want to read
everything in there or the other people, like, just send
it to me.
Speaker 2 (11:58):
I'll sign it.
Speaker 1 (11:59):
You just to have to find about their flavor and
what they're comfortable, right right, yeah, yeah.
Speaker 3 (12:02):
Now you should still point out with the important those people.
I agree, it's nice when they want to sign it,
but hey, like just FYI, here's the important stuff.
Speaker 1 (12:10):
Right and squad, I mean what I really kind of
the takeaways I've gotten with this really you know, with
his skills and dedication understanding timelines, but there's a person
that's on the other side of the table front. So
he's found out ways to kind of delegate it, dump
it if it needs be, defer it, or absolutely do it.
And that's one thing that I really really really respect
about Steve. Also that it's a long game for him
(12:32):
and that like I like to affectually call it a
you know, instead of dedicate, it's a dedicate. It's like
an overnight success that took ten years. I like to
call it dedicate. And that's what we're going to dig
into a little bit more right when we get back
here to level off conversations with coach.
Speaker 5 (12:52):

IF i didn't really kind of talk into life's values
and standards with my good Friend Steve austin here From Revolution.
Speaker 2 (13:55):
Mortgage, again he's our.
Speaker 1 (13:56):
Sponsor of the, Show so big thank you gratitude To
steve as we kind of shift. Gears your, Wife gabby
plays a huge role in your. Life, yeah so how
is your relationship with her shaped the man you are,
today especially in your, career because, dude come, on, like
you go out sometimes you're out till nine ten at
night entertaining, clients closing, deals and she's very. Understandable i'm
(14:19):
squad out, There i'm blessed and, No gabby as. Well
she's and she's a fantastic, photographer so'll hire. Her but
he was, like how does she, uh how does she
kind of keep you grounded and with the.
Speaker 3 (14:28):
Support, yeah it's, gosh there's probably not enough time to
go over everything that it. Is but you, know we've
been together for for a long time, now and you,
know we started dating WHEN i was getting into, this
and she could attest there's days WHERE i was, like
you know, what like this ain't like there's got to
be something ELSE i can, do Like i'm not gonna
make it in, this and always the support and understanding
(14:52):
of pushing. Through you know you can do. It you
have the skills like just keep, like just keep, trying
like one more, week you, know give it another, shot
one more, month keep. Going and as from a growth,
aspect because YOU i mean you kind of hit it
on the. Head we're we're in this world of it's
very easy to blend business into your regular life because
(15:12):
most of the clients we work with work nine to,
Five so it's a bit unrealistic to always think you
can just work nine to.
Speaker 1 (15:18):
Five THAT i love that they do, it like our
Producer brian mother just works five to.
Speaker 4 (15:24):
Nine it's a.
Speaker 3 (15:27):
Good way to be so understanding and you know she's
she's done a great job of helping me become a more,
present grounded man as a whole THAT i can more
consciously catch. Myself And i'm, like, ah it's it's a
little easy to the phone, rings react to, it pick it,
up even if you're in the middle of a, conversation like,
right the world's on, FIRE i gotta take this. Call,
(15:49):
right wait another? Minute like that that email can get
responded back to in an. Hour it doesn't everything doesn't
require or drop everything and do. It you, know enjoy
the moments that you're. In focus on the moments that you're,
in and on both. Sides when When i'm, home be,
home When i'm When i'm, working be, working and keep
that focus on each and you, know the support that
(16:09):
she's given me and understanding that and you, know giving
me the little nudget of like, hey by the, way
like we were just in the middle of talking and
you answer the phone up to growing up.
Speaker 4 (16:21):
To be not defensive about. It this is how we make.
Speaker 1 (16:25):
Money the Young steve might have been, like, dude, chill you,
know but not understanding.
Speaker 4 (16:29):
That and you, go, oh wait a, second maybe it
is me.
Speaker 1 (16:32):
When the sun rises and such of the lady you
kind of, like you, know to dig into. It so
if she was sitting right, here right, now right what
would she? Say is the one thing people don't see
About Steve austin but they absolutely.
Speaker 4 (16:44):
Should probably probably a bit more of the emotional sensitive.
Speaker 3 (16:49):
Side, sure you, KNOW I gabby being a, photographer you, know, artist,
creative creative. Mindset my mother is an, artist so LIKE
i have that side of.
Speaker 2 (17:00):
Me, sure you.
Speaker 3 (17:01):
Know my dad's a business, owner was a you, know,
athlete always kind of in that, sphere AND i was
just kind of like leaned in more to the business sports.
Side having a laser rocket arm. Helps but you know
THAT i do have that creative side and kind of you,
know softer, side, sure and can talk you, know at
a deeper. Level it doesn't need to be just about,
(17:23):
business you, know life and growth.
Speaker 1 (17:24):
Communications, Key, yeah it's and also some of the expectations
with your clients also, knowing, hey this is how Fast
i'll get back to. You you, know WHEN i during these,
times it's, LIKE i, mean, obviously if there's a closing,
tomorrow sure you. Jump but if it's, not then you
kind of, like you, know relax into your.
Speaker 3 (17:41):
Life, yeah we manage expectations up front as much as
we can and, really it's like you're communications and. Key
you kill them with. Communication, sure and when you're on
top of informing everybody with what's going, on they don't
really have any.
Speaker 4 (17:54):
Questions.
Speaker 2 (17:55):
Right so you've seen the Movie back to The FUTURE i.
Speaker 1 (17:58):
HAVE i think it's forty years old, TOMORROW i, think
or maybe It's April april twenty six or something like.
That so itways back to the. Future let's get that
glory With marty. McFly let's go back to the double,
dudes the twenty two year Old. Steve what can acknowledge
that not to change, anything because your journey's been pretty, awesome,
right but to maybe sharpen that learning curve or blast
through maybe just a little bit.
Speaker 4 (18:17):
Quicker, Boy that that guy was SOMETHING.
Speaker 3 (18:21):
I think it would be, to you, know let the
guard down a little bit of the difference of the
cockiness and confidence in who you, are who you're trying
to be to, people and you know what people are
saying about you when you're not. Around, sure that kid
was definitely more cocky THAN i, mean he. Didn't he
(18:43):
didn't lack, confidence that's for. Sure and part of, it you,
KNOW i grew up a you, know a five seven
white guy In South, florida but at a pretty high
level down, Here SO i had to have that chip
on my shoulder to a bit so kind of helping
nudge him to that like and like it's, okay, man
transition that a little bit be, confident but like you
could dial down the cockiness a, little.
Speaker 1 (19:04):
Let me you, know full. Discusion when we first, met
you're a full.
Speaker 4 (19:07):
Send kind of right out of college kind of like,
YEAH i.
Speaker 1 (19:09):
Was, like, man this little, dude what the? Hell but
then we built a really good. Friendship, yeah, absolutely you,
know and like you've saved my butt on deals before
And i've helped you out and it's just like a fantastic.
Speaker 2 (19:20):
Relationship i'm blessed to know your.
Speaker 4 (19:21):
Brother so, likewise how do you.
Speaker 1 (19:23):
Want that dashream, member that little line in between your
incarnation date and your expiration, date your life date and
your death? Date, right hopefully it's way way down the, road,
right but that, dash how do you want to?
Speaker 3 (19:32):
REMEMBER i wanted to be remembered as somebody, dependable and
that's somebody that you you knew what you were getting
when you you got introduced to me or we. Connected,
yeah there was NO i don't put on a different
show for anyone. Else you, Know i'm not going to
pretend to like something you like just to forge your.
(19:54):
Relationship AND i think it's okay to have, differences and you,
KNOW i want to be that person that it was a,
Guest like what a good?
Speaker 1 (20:02):
Guy but, like what do you think people might misunderstand
the most about?
Speaker 4 (20:07):
You that's a that's a good.
Speaker 3 (20:09):
ONE i mean maybe, honestly the like partially the competitive,
drive Like I'm I'M i have a lot of competitive
drive and like ambition for WHAT i want to. Do
BUT i think the the growth aspect of HOW i
want to grow and like the the people THAT i
want to bring with me to the top is IS
(20:29):
i feel like everybody looks at this maybe maybe thinking
like it's a little bit more individual. Based obviously this
is the industry that's very can be very individual and
solo accolade, based BUT i look way more at everything
as a whole and you, know bringing THE i want
to bring as many people along with me BECAUSE i
know what this industry can do for others AND i
(20:53):
want to be a resource to help people get get
to those milestones and you, know really change their.
Speaker 1 (20:58):
Lives, YEAH i mean you're going to slide across home
plate metaphorically bumped and, bruise but you're bringing a lot
of good to the people that are out there and.
Squad that's one thing THAT i knew about know About
steve is that he lives that plus equals minus lifestyle
that each Day steve is waking up and like looking
for someone to, emulate looking to learn something. New that's
the plus the equals is what him AND i do
(21:18):
quite a bit where we just kind of wrap and
bounce ideas off each, other and then the minus is
sending that elevator down to the people that you want
to bring with, you, RIGHT i mean that's that's. Important
that's the way you build, legacy. Correct, yeah, Yeah and it's
really we talked about it the other. Day you, know
it's the J.
Speaker 4 (21:34):
Colen you know what what good? Is first? Class if
the homies can't sit?
Speaker 1 (21:37):
Exactly, so what are three Things steve can't live without
and don't go?
Speaker 3 (21:43):
Water, Food, yeah nothing like, That LIKE i want to,
HEAR i definitely can't live without the love and support
of the right the core supporting. Cast you, know it
starts With, gabby you, know being that that rock at
home but you, know also the core base of friends and.
Family you, Know i'm fortunate to have a really strong
(22:04):
core of of close people That i've.
Speaker 1 (22:07):
Been invited out to a few of your events And i'm, like,
dude he's.
Speaker 4 (22:10):
Liked and a lot of people Like.
Speaker 3 (22:12):
Steve, YEAH i don't THINK i could do it without
that fitness huge. Thing you, Know it's been such a
core aspect of my life for so long that IF i,
go you, know you go to three days without working,
Out you're JUST i just.
Speaker 4 (22:23):
Feel worse saying.
Speaker 3 (22:25):
No you, know movement and fitness is always going to
be one and, uh finding finding enjoyment outside of of the.
Work so right, now currently that that enjoyment is is,
golf which you, Know, CANDILY i haven't been doing much
of it because we're in grind season right. Now but
it's also it's wildly expensive to golf down here this.
Time but you, know having that that joy in, life
(22:48):
BECAUSE i think it's important to, remember like the work
