devastated his close friends. Bam Margra, who was the best
friend of Ryan and also the fellow Jackass star, called
it the worst moment of his life. Ryan had so
much talent, so much going for him. This just isn't fair,

Bam shared, heartbroken. This tragedy wasn't just an accident. It
was a harsh reminder of how alcohol can ruin lives
in an instant. The incredible life of Ryan was filled
with daring adventures and endless laughter, ending in one of
the most horrifying ways imaginable. It was all because of
a deadly mix of alcohol and reckless speed. Oliver Reed.

a normal afternoon, Oliver went to a bar called The
Pub with his wife, friends, and some crew members. As usual,

(01:52):

Around two thirty pm, he suddenly collapsed. His friends tried
to help by giving him CPR, but it wasn't enough.
An ambulance came quickly, but Oliver died on the way
to the hospital. His death shocked everyone who knew him.
Glenda Jackson, who acted with him in Women in Love,

(02:14):
said he was completely professional and likely passed in a
way he would have chosen. Director Michael Winner, who had
worked with Oliver for years, called him a perfect gentleman
and a kind, sensitive man behind the wild image the
media often showed. Only two days before his death, Oliver
had spoken with friends and seemed happy and sober. His

(02:36):
passing was sudden and heartbreaking, a sad ending for a
talented actor whose life was often overshadowed by his love
of drinking. Gig Young Gig Young was a Hollywood star
who seemed to have it all talent, charm, and an
Academy Award for his role in They Shoot Horses, Don't They?
But behind the scenes, alcohol was ruining his life. His

(02:58):
addiction caused a behavior, mood swings, and deep mental struggles,
making it harder for him to stay stable both personally
and professionally. As his drinking worsened, it began to affect
his career. Directors and producers found him unreliable, and his
once bright opportunities started to fade. In his personal life,
alcohol fueled his anger and instability, leading to the collapse

(03:22):
of his marriages. By the time he entered his fifth marriage,
his addiction had completely taken over. In nineteen seventy eight,
after three weeks of marriage to Kim Schmidt. The struggle
of Gig Young with alcohol and mental health reached a
horrifying end. He shot and killed Kim in their Manhattan
apartment before turning the gun on himself. His tragic death

(03:43):
was a devastating reminder of how alcohol addiction can destroy
not just a career, but a life. William Holden William Holden,
who was a renowned Hollywood actor starred in films like
Sunset Boulevard and Stalic seventeen, met a heartbreaking and tragic
end influenced by his long battle with alcohol addiction. On

(04:03):
November twelfth, nineteen eighty one. Holden, who was known for
his charm and charisma on screen, had been drinking at
his Santa Monica apartment earlier in the evening. After a
night of alcohol, he slipped and fell, striking his head
and causing a severe laceration to his forehead. Initially, Holden
was conscious but disoriented. His alcohol impairment clouded his thinking,

(04:26):
preventing him from fully comprehending the seriousness of his injury.
He stayed awake for about thirty minutes after the fall,
yet did not make a distress call, possibly due to
confusion or inability to recognize the danger he was in.
The alcohol likely numbed his pain and clouded his judgment,
leaving him unable to act effectively to seek medical help.

(04:47):
As the bleeding continued and the injury became increasingly serious,
Holden eventually lost consciousness. His body was not found until
four days later when a friend came to check on him.
By then, it was too late. He had succumbed to
internal bleeding caused by his untreated head injury. Chris Farley
What happens when addiction spirals out of control and overshadows

(05:10):
even the brightest stars. For Chris Farley, a beloved comedian
whose humor could light up any room, it was a
tragic end, one driven by alcohol and drugs. Chris Farley
was one of the funniest comedians of his time, known
for his wild antics and unforgettable characters on Saturday Night
Live and in movies like Tommy Boy and Black Sheep.

(05:31):
But behind the laughs, he was battling a serious addiction
to alcohol and drugs. His death at thirty three was
a stark reminder of the destructive power of addiction. It
all started with a four day binge that involved drinking
cocaine and other drugs. Farley's partying took him from a
club called Karma, to his apartment, and then to a

(05:51):
pub crawl. The day before his death, he skipped plans
to get a haircut and instead spent time with a
three hundred dollars per hour call girl who was there
to provide him with cocaine. She later said that he
seemed lost and was bouncing from room to room, unable
to find peace or satisfaction. On December eighteenth, nineteen ninety seven,

(06:12):
John who was the brother of Chris Farley, found him
sprawled in the entryway of his Chicago apartment. There were
no signs of foul play or drugs in the apartment,
but a toxicology report later confirmed that Farley died from
a lethal combination of morphine and cocaine a speedball. His
alcohol and drug abuse, combined with the destructive binge he

(06:33):
was on, proved fatal. John Barrymore John Barrymore, who was
a dashing leading man and a celebrated stage actor in Hollywood,
met a tragic end due to the effects of alcohol.
Born into a theatrical family, Barrymore was known as the
Great Profile for his striking, good looks and powerful presence

(06:54):
both on stage and screen. But despite his fame, his
life was marked by excess, particularly his battle with alcoholism.
His death in nineteen forty two was a direct result
of complications from his long standing battle with alcoholism. Born
into a theatrical family and once one of the most
celebrated actors of Hollywood, his life was marred by excessive

(07:16):
drinking that significantly affected his health and career. On May
twenty ninth, nineteen forty two, Barrymore was found dead in
his Hollywood apartment. The official cause of death was determined
to be cirrhosis of the liver, a condition caused by
chronic alcohol abuse. He had suffered from internal bleeding, which
led to his demise. His excessive drinking over the years,

(07:38):
combined with the seclusion that often accompanies heavy alcohol use,
contributed to his death. Verne Troyer Vern Troyer, known for
his role as many Me in the Austin Powers movies,
passed away in April twenty eighteen at the age of
forty nine. His death was ruled a fatal decision by
the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner Coroner, with alcohol intoxication

(08:01):
being a significant factor. Troyer had openly struggled with alcoholism
for much of his life. He had spent the last
three weeks of his life in a hospital in Los
Angeles due to alcohol related issues. The autopsy and additional
tests confirmed that alcohol toxicity was the cause of death,
officially listing it as fatal decision. This tragic end followed

(08:23):
years of public battles with addiction and related health issues,
including a form of dwarfism that affected his growth. In
the weeks leading up to his death, his condition had
become particularly severe, with alcohol abuse exacerbating his physical and
mental health challenges. Despite attempts to address his addiction, it
ultimately led to his untimely death. Tributes poured in from

(08:45):
fellow celebrities who remembered him as a kind and charismatic individual,
including Carmen Electra and Marley Mattlin, who described him as
having a lovely smile with a caring and big heart.
Heath Ledger Heath Ledge death in two thousand and eight
was a tragic and untimely loss that left the world
in shock. At just twenty eight years old, Ledger appeared

to have everything going for him, success, fame, and critical acclaim. However,
his personal life was plagued by struggles, particularly with substance abuse,
including alcohol. Ledger was battling severe insomnia and depression, often
sleeping just a couple of hours a night. This intense
anxiety and lack of sleep drove him to self medicate

(09:29):
with alcohol and prescription medications. On the day of his death,
Ledger was found in his New York apartment, lying unconscious
on the floor. Nearby, there were empty alcohol bottles in
various prescription medications, indicating a lethal mix that likely contributed
to his accidental overdose. The struggles of Heath Ledger with

(09:49):
alcohol and pills had worsened over time, particularly as he
dealt with the pressure of his role as the Joker
in The Dark Knight, a character who was mentally taxing
to embody. Matthew Perry. Matthew Perry, known for his iconic
role as Chandler Bing and Friends, had a life marked
by highs and lows, ultimately culminating in a tragic end.

(10:10):
At age fifty four. Parry was found dead at his
Los Angeles home, reportedly drowning in a hot tub. The
police ruled out any foul play, but it was clear
that Perry's struggles with addiction played a significant role in
his demise. In his memoir Friends, Lovers and the Big
Terrible Thing, released in twenty twenty two, Perry opened up

(10:32):
about his addiction battles. He candidly described his downward spiral,
which began with a jet ski accident in nineteen ninety
seven that left him hooked on vicodin. This addiction led
him to multiple stints in rehab, with his weight fluctuating
dramatically throughout the show's run as a result of his
substance abuse. Perry admitted that he didn't watch Friends because

(10:52):
it reminded him too much of his struggles with drinking
opiate's cocaine. It also reminded him how his appearance changed
season by season due to his addiction. His addiction eventually
led to more serious health issues. In two thousand and one,
Perry entered rehab again for a mix of vicodin, methadone, amphetamines,
and alcohol. His condition worsened over the years, culminating in pancreatitis,

(11:17):
which significantly impacted his health and appearance. Despite spending millions
on trying to get sober, Perry later estimated nine million dollars,
but he never fully escaped the grips of addiction, and
it tragically ended his life in a hot tub at
his home. David Cassidy David Cassidy, the beloved star of
the Partridge Family, had a tragic end after a long

(11:39):
struggle with alcoholism. In February twenty seventeen, during a concert
in Agora Hills, California, his health began to visibly decline.

words and forgot lyrics, and a stark contrast to the
smooth entertainer they remembered. Many suspected he had relapsed into drinking,

(12:00):
a fear that had haunted him since the early two thousands,
when he was arrested multiple times for DUI and checked
into rehab. The addiction of Cassidy became more public with
each arrest. From twenty ten to twenty fourteen, he was
arrested three times for driving under the influence, prompting him
to seek treatment at a rehab facility in South Florida.

(12:21):
He openly admitted his struggle, saying he felt hopeless and
even thought he might die if he didn't get help.
If I take another drink, I'm going to die. Physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually,
I'm dead. Cassidy confessed in an interview that I felt
this incredible sense of relief because I stopped lying to myself.
He added, acknowledging his addiction had taken over his life. However,

(12:45):
after a few clean months, his health started to decline again.
In November twenty seventeen, he died from liver failure at
age sixty seven. Although dementia was often discussed as a
contributing factor, Cassidy later admitted it was actually a temporary
conditionught on by severe alcohol poisoning. I have a liver disease,
Cassidy admitted in a phone call for a documentary, explaining

(13:08):
that his dementia like symptoms were directly related to his drinking.
I did it to myself, man, he confessed, acknowledging the
consequences of years of heavy drinking. Michael Elphick Michael Elphick

the impact it had on his life. He often said,

(14:14):
Going on the wagon has made me a bit grumpy,
but I'm a wiser man for it. His candidness about
his addiction reflected his awareness of the destructive path he
was on. Even when his life was out of control,
he managed to maintain his work commitments. He noted, even
when my life has become uncontrollable as it has at times,

(14:34):
it hasn't affected my work. I've goofed on lines, but
I've never jeopardized anybody else. Despite his efforts to get

New episodes every Monday and Friday. Your support means the world to me and I don’t take it for granted — click the follow button and leave a review to help us spread the love with On Purpose. I can’t wait for you to listen to your first or 500th episode!
