Speaker 1 (00:00):
High school football. Here we go with week number seven
already and some important games this week on the docket,
including our broadcast game which features Spartan on Spartan Action
with Start coming to Lima to take on the Lima
Senior Spartans. Here to talk about that and more is
Chris Hallell from the Lineman News. Chris, how you doing
(00:22):
pretty good?
Speaker 2 (00:22):
You know, we saw some weird stuff last week. I
don't know if it's going to get much crazier than that,
but you know, you talk about the Marion Local almost loss, you,
I mean, Caleb Moyer through an interception. What else could
possibly happen at this point?
Speaker 1 (00:36):
Our pets heads are falling off. I mean, just just
don't know what's going to happen. Speaking of Marion Local,
of course, that's the big controversy from this past week.
Everybody is convinced they were the beneficiary of a blown
call on a fourth down catch not catch. I've seen
a replay of it. Not the greatest angle or the
(00:58):
best look at it, but I suppose that's one of
those things that the beholder, the person sees what they
want to see, right.
Speaker 2 (01:07):
Yeah, I think that's that's part of it. And you know,
it's not going to make for sales feel any better,
but this is just kind of you know, sometimes the
ball just bounces your way when you've been playing football
as well and as great as Marion Local has for
so long, and you know, just like you, I've seen
the replay, I've seen the screenshots and stuff. You know,
it was it a catch? You know, I don't know
(01:28):
I would I would lean probably towards the sides of
probably not, But watching it in full time, the way
the receiver comes up with the ball and stuff, it's
it is definitely not the easiest call. And I'm just
glad I wasn't the guy in the black and white
stripe jersey to make the call.
Speaker 1 (01:45):
Yeah, And of course people had to get ultra exercised
about it and treat it like it was a blown
call in the Super Bowl where we have eight extra
officials and one hundred extra cameras to review things. But
be that as it may. Marion Local certainly has shown
vulnerability this year with the two near losses, but their
winning streak now stands at seventy They have fort recovery
(02:09):
this week. Shouldn't that shouldn't be the biggest of challenges.
Pretty nondescript week in the MAC. So let's go back
to our game tonight. Lima Senior taken on Start. You
did a feature story on this in the print edition
of the newspaper on Wednesday. This is the team to
beat lim of Senior Week ten last year and ruined
their perfect season. So there's some motivation there for sure.
Speaker 2 (02:31):
Yeah, they beat him and beat him good in that
Week ten matchup, you know, and they took everything from
Lima Senior that they thought had they had in their
hands last year. You know, a perfect ten to zer season,
a t cow title was it with basically just a
run through of those conference opponents, if you will. But
you know, I was thinking about this game this morning
and just thinking about how good Lime of Senior's offense
(02:55):
was last year and how really good that line of
Senior defense is this year. But man, if you could
have just married him halfway in between played that Star
team last year, I think you got a two or
three touchdown win. But you know, a lot of credit
goes to that Start team because you know, they have
some really good athletes. You know, for a city league team,
(03:16):
you know, talk about Jonah Taal. They're they're running back.
He ran all over the line of senior defense last year.
He scored four times. He broke off a ninety three yarder.
You know, that's that's the kind of player that you
would hope that you know the game plan. You know,
he circled at the top of the scouting report and
the game plan kind of revolves around him. And you
(03:39):
know that with the way that this line of senior
defense has played this year, I would expect him to
be able to minimize at least one of those kids
in the backfield between Jonah Tall and Tyree Smith. But
you know, Bill Lawrence, when I talked to him earlier
this week, he said, look, you know, those guys are
just home run hitters. They can take it to the
(03:59):
house from anywhere around. So we're going to have to
be on our toes. You know, they had a great
defensive game plan against line of Senior last year as well,
and good and the good news for the Spartans is
they kind of looked a little bit more like themselves
on offense last week against Woodward.
Speaker 1 (04:16):
Yeah, but I mean Woodward was quite uniquely bad in
that game, and I think Alima Senior. The problem for
them is they really need to change their identity. I
think they still feel like they're supposed to just go
up and down the field and score, and it's clear
this team's not going to do that. I mean, you know,
we can talk about getting better throughout the season, and
(04:38):
I'm all for that, but this team clearly does not
have the wherewithal to be scoring forty to fifty points
a game. That is not going to be happening. So
they need to lean on their defense, and they need
to be better with the football. They need to quit
turning it over. They need to be more field position conscious.
Quit on sidekicking all the time. The defense, That's what
(05:01):
I would do. Take care of the ball and play
field position because their defense is clearly good. Their offense
is clearly not good. And I'm just not on board
that there's a whole lot of room to raise that
ceiling for the offense.
Speaker 2 (05:15):
No, you know, I couldn't agree with you more on
those points of emphasis, because you know, Jenias Hall entering
last week, had more interceptions on the season than he
did touchdowns. And you know, obviously the you know, a
little bit of lofsided game, you know, skew those numbers
up a little bit, but they they've got to be
able to just methodically move the ball down the field.
(05:35):
You know. They they got so used to scoring on
less than five plays every every drive out last year,
and you know, like you said, you know, that's just
not who they are. This year. They're they're gonna run
the ball a little bit more with Hall, He's got
something like forty carries this year. They're going to hand
it off to Montrey Davis a little bit, and they're
(05:55):
still going to hit those quick hitters. But you know,
you got to be a little bit smarter, a little
bit more strategic if you want to compete, you know,
come week ten, week eleven, you know, and even in
a game like this against a team that is going
to come in with a lot of confidence against you.
Speaker 1 (06:10):
Yeah, Start did lose to Scott a couple of weeks
ago in a low scoring game, so I think this
one could be close to the vest as well. We'll
have it tonight. Line A Senior against a Start kickoff
at seven o'clock. Let's move to the Western Buckeye League
over on our sister station one on seven five the
Big Buck Wap Connetta Football. All their games are there
and the big one this week in the league is
(06:31):
Wapawk at Shawnee. Redskins are six and oh. Shawnee five
and one, and last week a bit of a I
don't want to say a scare for Wapa Canetta, but
you mentioned finally an interception thrown and they won forty
two twenty eight at Van Wert. Did that expose some
weaknesses or just a temporary bad day?
Speaker 2 (06:53):
I think a little bit of a temporary bad day.
If I had to lean here, you know, I took
the liberty of looking at up. You know, Caleb Moyer
hasn't thrown an interception since September twenty ninth, twenty twenty
three against Kenton. That was seven hundred and twenty eight
days in between an interceptions, So you know that's that's
not gonna happen all the time. I'm not saying he's
going to be perfect the rest of the way, but
(07:14):
it's it's also not the end of the world. The
one standout part about that game, though, is the twenty
eight points from Van Wert, because while Pauk coming into
this game hadn't allowed I don't I don't believe more
than two touchdowns in any game so far this season,
and so that, you know, that's a little bit of
an alarming thing. The other alarming portion about this is
(07:37):
they're a little thin when it comes to the running
game right now. You know, Jared Mullen and Andrea Longsworth
didn't play last week, and I'm not sure when either
one of those guys are going to be back. But
that forced Caleb Moyer into carrying the ball twenty two times,
which he did a great job at. But he just
got to wonder, you know, how many how many hits
can a guy like Caleb Moyer take in the running
(07:59):
game when he's when he's kind of used to balance
balancing handing it off and probably carrying it, you know,
ten to fifteen times max the game. So that's that's
going to be something they figure out over the last
few weeks. They they got Gage Vaughn, who's a really
nice sophomore who's very capable of running the ball as well,
and you know, let's just hope that they can get
(08:20):
one of those two guys back at least that you know,
I'm not sure what their prognosis is, but I would
hate to see either one of those senior guys that
have to sit out the rest of the year, that's
for sure.
Speaker 1 (08:29):
Well, Shawnee has certainly bounced back from that season opening loss.
They have now won five games in a row. They've
scored thirty one points or more, and four of those
wins last week pulled away from defiance. I guess the
question is against a high level WBL defense like Wapa Canetta,
does Shawnee have enough offensive firepower to outscore Wapa Canetta.
(08:52):
Not that it's going to be high scoring, but you know,
when they played LCC, they scored nineteen. When they played
Elida they scored thirteen. I'm thinking they're probably going to
be in that range against a Wapakanetta defense. Can they
come up with enough offense to win this game? I
think is the real question.
Speaker 2 (09:08):
Right, do they have the ability? Yes, do they have
the execution? We'll see because you know this, this Walpawk
defense has been incredible this year. But on the defensive
side of the ball for Shawnee. You know, I was
just thinking about this earlier today, is that, you know,
if Wapawk is forced to turn Caleb Moyer into a
(09:29):
running QB like they did last week with those twenty
two carries, I mean, who better to play against a
running quarterback than a team that guards JJ Spiker in
practice every every day, right, you know, one of the
most mobile guys in the WBL. You know, they they
got to be able to contain Moyer, make him throw
(09:49):
from the pocket, and which he is also very great at.
We're not we're not talking about any deficiencies here, but
you forced Moyer to throw from the pocket. And if
I'm Shane Wireman, I look at that Saint Mary's game
tape and see what they did to force the ball
out of the hands of Caden Page. Caden Page only
had one catch in that game. The only way that
(10:11):
you get a win in this game is if you
can guard, you know, guard Caden Page, you know, neutralize
them and make more or make place to other guys
and just pray that they make a few mistakes and
if they do, you have to capitalize on them. Because
the Walpak is a team that they're very buttoned up.
(10:31):
They don't give the football away, so if they give
you an opportunity, you have to run with it.
Speaker 1 (10:37):
That's Chris Howld the Lineman News. We'll look forward to
their coverage at Limohio dot com. Chris, as always, we
appreciate you taking time to talk high school football with us.
Speaker 2 (10:47):
