Speaker 1 (00:00):
Earlier this month, Lima City Council approved a contract with
Sports Facilities to manage and oversee the new Lima Community
Aquatic Center. Originally, the idea was that the Lima YMCA
would manage the facility, but Mayor Sharita Smith says they
had to change their plans.
Speaker 2 (00:19):
So the YMCA continues to be at the table and
a strong community partner for the project. You know, the
YMCA was involved in the design, build, and determining you know,
you know, where the lifeguards will go, all of those things.
The YMCA was also involved in the process that we
undertook to pick the overall operator. The reason why we
(00:43):
kind of shifted to go to a third party operator
is because the hy has recently expanded in both Bluffton
and Kenton and just want to give a little time,
you know, operating those three facilities now before they take
on another project.
Speaker 1 (01:04):
And inmate from Lima is now facing formal charges in
connection with the Christmas Day beating death of a Ross
County Corrections officer Hrareshan Cannon of Lima has been indicted
on two counts of aggravated murder related to the killing
of officer Andrew Lansing. Authorities say Cannon brutally attacked Lancing
at the State prison north of Chillicothe, leaving him unrecognizable.
(01:28):
Cannon was locked up on a minimum eight year sentence
for assault and weapons charges at the time. An Ohio
man who was wanted in connection with a Toledo teen's
death was shot in Columbus yesterday by a police officer.
Darnell Jones was wanted by Toledo police on Monday. They
issued a warrant for Jones's arrest after his thirteen year
(01:48):
old daughter was found dead inside an abandoned home. Columbus
police SWAT team was searching for Jones. According to court records,
he pulled out a gun, fired at officers, and that's
when on one SWAT officer shot Jones. Columbus police say
a gun was recovered at the scene. BCI will investigate
the officer involved shooting. Sergeant James Fuqua with the Columbus
(02:11):
Division of Police commented about the neighborhood where the officer
involved shooting occurred.
Speaker 3 (02:17):
No one in the public was injured, but it's important
to know obviously, given this as an unusual area where
we do not see a lot of crime. We just
want to reassure the public that this is a safe,
contained situation and there's no longer a threat.
Speaker 4 (02:31):
To the public.
Speaker 1 (02:32):
Investigators are still trying to figure out why Jones went
to Columbus. With primary election season just around the corner,
secretaries of state around the country are raising concerns about
the integrity of our elections. We get more with the
on n's Tracy Townsend.
Speaker 4 (02:48):
The National Association of Secretaries of State says cyber threats
to our elections systems are constant. Most attempts are stopped
by the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency or CESA CISA,
but the Trump administration has cut ten million dollars from
that budget, citing overlapping of services and some worry election
security could be compromised under the budget cuts, but not
(03:11):
everyone agrees. Last year, Russia, China and Iran, I'll try
to interfere in US elections through misinformation campaigns.
Speaker 1 (03:18):
That's them and n's Tracy Townsend reporting and more Ohio
families appear to be choosing to attend private schools. The
Cincinnati Enquirer reports that the Ohio Department of Education is
projecting a fifteen percent rise in the use of ed
choice vouchers at private schools next school year. That number
is projected to increase another seven and a half percent
(03:41):
the following year. The governor's office says that's the reason
why the new state budget is proposing putting more funds
into the school choice voucher program. The governor cites a
change in the trend where students are being educated. At
the same time, the budget proposes reducing public school fund
by over one hundred million dollars. That's the news you
