Speaker 1 (00:00):
High school tournament basketball.

Speaker 2 (00:01):
A lot of exciting action and the here to talk
about it with us is the host of Lima Land
Hoops Saturday eight to ten every Saturday during basketball season.

Speaker 1 (00:10):
Matt Childers, Matt, good morning, Hey, good morning, Tod. Good
to be with you.

Speaker 2 (00:14):
So you were amongst the three thousand plus jammed into
the Alida Fieldhouse last night.

Speaker 3 (00:19):
I couldn't get one more person in that field You
probably could, but.

Speaker 1 (00:23):
They had been shouldn't. Yeah, it was amazing.

Speaker 3 (00:26):
It was the It was the biggest crowd that I
had seen there since, uh, probably the nineteen ninety nine
Lima Senior e lighta game where Andre Horton I think
had twenty three in the fourth quarters. A Chris Adams
Dick Heath game that was a wild boy, was amazing
game of like ninety six, ninety four, ninety six, ninety yep, yep, exactly.

Speaker 1 (00:46):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (00:46):
Matt Smith had like thirty six or thirty eight for Elaida.

Speaker 1 (00:50):
And you know the thing is it's a tournament game.
So wenton Woods.

Speaker 2 (00:54):
They had to make the trip from they're the home
Sainety suburbs. They were the home team. Yeah on the board,
wink wink. But most of the crowd, of course Lima
Senior people and Lima Land basketball fans. And you know,
I've always said nothing brings the town, this town's sports
fans out like a good Lima Senior basketball team.

Speaker 1 (01:14):
I was truly amazed at their at at Spartan Nation.
How how just?

Speaker 3 (01:20):
I mean, I thought you'd walk into that game at
about a quarter till seven, tip time seven, and the
Senior high side would be packed, the lower bowl would
be packed, and then there'd be plenty of room up time.
There was nothing at that point. It was the most
cars I've ever seen. We parked way out on a
rural road. I went with coach Segerson, Ron Williams and

(01:42):
Steve Mulka, you know, some Tiburg guys and former coaches,
and you know they called it one of the greatest
games they've ever seen in Lima history.

Speaker 1 (01:51):
Well, we knew it would be a high level game.

Speaker 2 (01:53):
They were both ranked in the top five and the
RPI for Division two and ultimately maybe Lima Senior peaked
too soon.

Speaker 1 (02:01):
They dominated early, did they not? Oh? They did.

Speaker 3 (02:04):
They got off to an incredible start. I mean it
was like a rocket launch. I mean, you had Willie
Foster with an incredible tomahawk dunk. Sean Foster followed that
up a Mariati with a layup, and then another dunk
by Foster, and you really thought this could get away
from Winton Woods because there's maybe one hundred and fifty
fans of the three thousand, and the three thousand were

(02:25):
just overwhelming. It was like an earthquake when all that transpired,
you know, and the Spartans go up twenty one to
twelve after one, and you're thinking, hey, they'll be comfortably
up in this game. It'll be like that the entire game.
But they got outscored the next three quarters. They got
outscored ten to nine, twenty one to ten, as you've
been talking about this morning, and then eighteen to sixteen

(02:48):
in the fourth quarter, which totaled sixty one to fifty six,
and they just could not get over the hump. They
shot it poorly from three, they shot three to seventeen,
but every time they got it and I kept every
score starting with six twenty four left in the game,
and they got it to fifty one forty seven, with
three thirty three left, fifty one forty nine, with three

(03:11):
fourteen left, fifty three forty nine, fifty three, fifty two,
fifty five, fifty two. They could not stop them, you know.
And it was a lot of second chances too. The
rebounds came out about even, but they they could not capitalize.
And I would just say Winton Woods, you know, I said,
I said it was the three rs. It was raucous,

(03:32):
it was ridiculous talent on the court, and it was
resilient Warriors because they came into this hostile environment and
they were resilient the entire fourth quarter and that's how
they came away with a win.

Speaker 1 (03:45):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (03:45):
One person I talked to that was that the game
thought that the pivotal aspect of the Winton Woods was
their physicality and their their strength late in the game,
especially what you're talking about the second chances. The Spartans
could just ultimately couldn't clamp down on them when they
had a chance.

Speaker 3 (04:03):
Yeah, I agree with that. I was court side, I
stood right in the end zone, and what what JAKEL.
Cotton did was remarkable with the with the intensity that
they had. He's the only guy in Lima Senior who
was underneath really you know, taking care of business. And
he had three or four guys that were just crashing

(04:24):
the boards and I mean the physicality. Denny Thompson said,
the former coach at Elia, he said, you know, we
had some great teams. You know, at Elta, we had
the Dakotas Dakota Matthias run with Reggie McAdams. He goes,
we played Dunbar in a state final and he goes,
he goes those He goes, our team in Dunbar that

(04:44):
they they would not have competed like this tonight. That's
how good the talent was on the floor. And that
may be just kind of you know, you know, a
current day you know, bias to it. Meaning sure, you
know it's like recency bias.

Speaker 1 (04:58):
You just saw.

Speaker 3 (04:58):
But man, and what Jakeel Cotton did was amazing underneath.
But you give Winton Woods a ton of credit. They
had to travel two hours up, they were in a
hostile environment. They battled, they got every single rebound that
they needed and then put back and they shot it
pretty darn well. I mean, they shot over fifty percent

(05:21):
from from two, they shot thirty six percent from three,
and then they were nine to sixteen from the free
throw line. And you know, at the end of the game,
it was fifty nine to fifty six with seconds left,
and it kind of looked like it was getting out.

Speaker 1 (05:34):
It was over.

Speaker 3 (05:35):
They were up five and a lot of people are
exiting and Lima Senior gets it back to three and
they get a steal and in the right corner. Sean
Foster has an opportunity to hit a three and he
ball fakes. He could he ball fakes and the Winton
Woods player flies right by him and he lost the
ball out of bounds. I mean, if he hits that shot,

(05:55):
that place may may have collapsed. So yeah, it was
it was spectacular. I you know, I was certainly from Lima,
you know, rooting for Lima Senior and hoping that they advanced.
It's great for you know, the Lima economy, it's great
for w I m A sports, It's great for every
it's great for everything. And uh, you know the two

(06:16):
teams they got beat by this year that I saw.
I know you saw them play Whitmer, but that length
and that physicality the the Shawnee game and then the
UH and then the winton Woods game. Those two games
were similar, albeit Winton Woods was much more physical than Shawnee.

Speaker 1 (06:35):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (06:36):
I think that's the common denominator from the Whitmer game.
They had a physicality about them that that Lima was
not able quite to match. And you know that's something
that some of their players will have to take to
heart for next year to get a little bigger and stronger.
Of course too, kel Cotton's moving on. That's gonna be
a big loss. But that is Yeah, you know again,

(06:56):
I've always said it. Nothing galvanizes town sports fans like
a good line of senior basketball team. Yeah mean, because
certainly a lot of those people in the stands go
to every line of senior game and are Spartan people. Yeah,
but I guarantee you a lot of them are like you, yeah,
just basketball guys from this town that love when the

(07:17):
Spartans are at a high level, which is a lot
of the time, but I mean when they're at a
really high level like this year's team, this town goes
nuts for the Spartan I.

Speaker 3 (07:27):
Thought one of the other keys was to your point,
who's coming back for Lime of Senior next year? And
they'll be very good. Losing Cotton is a big deal.
But they held Sean Foster, who I call aka Baby
Steph Curry.

Speaker 1 (07:40):
He looked fantastic.

Speaker 3 (07:42):
In that fourth quarter but in the third quarter and
most in the first part of the fourth he did
not score, So, you know, you hold him. I really
feel like if i'm you know, if I'm him and
he's only sophomore, right, I really feel like he needs
to get a little more selfish. And and sometimes guys
that are younger like that, you know, and the guy

(08:03):
on teams with guys they've played with their whole life.
Even though Shawn's obviously this level talent, for Wintwood's to
hold him, it was, you know, pretty much, you know,
all of eight minutes of the third and then say
three minutes of the fourth he did not score, right,
So that was a huge feather in their cap and
something that gave them momentum. They only played really five guys.
They had one other guy that played three minutes. So Matt,

(08:25):
good to talk with you, Wing. We look forward to
your show Saturday eight am. We'll have a lot to
talk about and hopefully we'll have eliighta too. But Shawnee
and LCC already set to play regional finals on Saturday,
so joined Matt and his crew Saturday morning at eight
for a Lama Land Hoops Saturday
