Speaker 1 (00:00):
High school football is coming up before you know it,
and our high school football previews, we're going to start
at the top the pre eminent football program in the
state of Ohio. That would be Mary Local head coach
Tim Goodwin with us. Tim, thanks for taking some time.
Speaker 2 (00:15):
Always a pleasure. Todd.
Speaker 1 (00:16):
Well, last we were seeing the Flyers. You were wrapping
up yet another state championship, running the winning streak to
sixty four. And now you start anew and your program
usually you have double digit seniors playing every year, so
there's a big turnover and usually another large group of
seniors you're counting on. Who are some of these seniors
(00:38):
that are going to move up, even that haven't even
played a lot before. But what's this senior class bring
to the table.
Speaker 2 (00:45):
Yeah, we lost an awful lot, way more than usual.
You know, we only have three starters back total, so
it's a total you know, rebuild in terms of the
lineup and so forth. We have fourteen seniors, you know,
not a lot of them obviously, you know varsity, you
know ball much, but you know they've been in the
program and they're good kids and they worked hard. So
(01:09):
you know, we're obviously gonna be a little rusty or
a little floppy there at the beginning. But yeah, you know,
we we have I guess a couple to answer your question,
a couple of returners. Oliver Hillsman's back at tight end,
Cam Eiffert's back at full back. Both of those guys,
(01:30):
you know, well, well, well we'll have a good year,
so you know we're looking for them to be leaders. Well.
Speaker 1 (01:37):
Of course, last year your quarterback was a senior but
had some injury problems at least momentarily, so you had
somebody else playing quarterback, but that was also a senior,
wasn't it.
Speaker 2 (01:48):
Yeah, correct, Yeah, we replaced the senior with the senior.
So this year our quarterback is a sophomore, Brennan Hess.
His older brother was Kate who is our quarterback in
twenty two here, So good athletic lineage there, but he's
a sophomore and he's going to do sophomore.
Speaker 1 (02:05):
Things well indeed, but when you look at your program,
then what do you think is the key to grooming
your next quarterback? I mean, what do you think are
the things that you guys do that has him at
least ready to start as a sophomore, And they obviously
will be growing pains. But what is your philosophy, I
guess with grooming the next quarterback.
Speaker 2 (02:26):
Yeah, just idea and I'm really and target them and
getting them ready. I got two guys that work with
our quarterbacks. Both played for US, both were state champions,
both played college football. Adam Burkey does a lot with
our quarterbacks, runs a little quarterback school for US, you know,
in the off season. And Chad Otdie who's an eye
(02:46):
doctor here, but he was a state champion flyer. He
was actually like the national defensive back of the year
in D three when he was in college. So both
great guys. So I just let them. You know, I'm
just an old offensive lineman, Todd, I don't know how
to play quarterback. My philosophy has lets the quarterbacks coach
(03:07):
to quarterback.
Speaker 1 (03:08):
Well, you know, it's interesting as we talk with Tim
Goodwin from Marion Local, how you build a coaching staff.
I'm sure your philosophy has sort of changed over the
twenty five plus years you've been the head coach there,
but when you try to put together your staff, now
there's a lot of continuity, of course, but you have
i'm sure now very specific things that these guys do
for you, and it's sort of like a well oiled
(03:30):
machine now.
Speaker 2 (03:32):
It really is. And I tell people, really, it's my
greatest accomplishment really is building the staff that I have
right now. And you know, I must not be too
hard to work with because they keep coming back. So
you know, I got great guys in a lot of
different spots. And you know, obviously I'm coordinating and all
that stuff, but those guys are definitely in charge of
(03:54):
their positions.
Speaker 1 (03:55):
We're talking with Marian local coach Tim Goodwin as we
get ready to talk high school football for twenty twenty five.
And you know, for you guys, it's usually kind of
tough to make out your non league schedule. I mean,
you've had to go to Indiana and such, and I
think you're doing that again right for week one, South Adams,
isn't it.
Speaker 2 (04:15):
Yeah, but South Adams is actually coming here, So that's
a breath of fresh here. We actually get the host
a non league game, but yeah, they're coming here. Then
we go up to Convoy Creuss few week two, so
we got two you know, good fairly local South Adams
isn't too far from us, you know, non league games.
Then we jump right into the league schedule with really
(04:36):
the favorite in Saint Henry.
Speaker 1 (04:38):
Well, and you mentioned the difficulty scheduling week one, especially
for you guys over the years it sort of has rotated.
How much of a source of frustration has that been
for you with something like that that you've got to
constantly tend to here seemingly.
Speaker 2 (04:53):
Yeah, it's frustrating, but it's out of our control, you know,
So I try not to let my self get too
frustrated with it. But it's just it's just Northwest Ohio
is better than anywhere else, Todd, if I could say it,
like the people treat you better, you know, you know,
the officials, you know, there's some skin in the game
(05:14):
because you're going to run into them again, you know,
and just the way the way that our side of
the state does things. It's just it's home and people
just treat you right, you know. And when you get
outside of our area you see some strange things and
some not not cool things. So I would just rather stay,
(05:36):
you know, in West Central or at least Northwestern District,
you know, and player non league games.
Speaker 1 (05:41):
Well, Tim, The other I guess change to talk about
is where we're going with twelve teams per region. Now
for the playoffs, and of course the sixteen team field
was panned by the Coaches Association and many others, and you,
of course were at the forefront of that, with the
teams choosing not to play you in the opening round.
And I guess from your perspective, do you think the
(06:03):
twelve teams per region is more fair and representative and
inclusive enough to be the system that we'll stick with here?
Speaker 2 (06:11):
Yeah, I mean, who knows. I don't know. I really
have mixed feelings about the whole thing, you know, because
until last year, I liked the the sixteen because, you know,
for us, I know it's not for everyone. I mean,
it was a great week of a program building for
us and we got the you know, it was basically
(06:32):
for us a JV game under the lights, you know,
with a crowd, and we just coached the heck out
of those kids out there on the field. So I
loved them. But then last year, no one kind of
wanted to play, so that was definitely a strange scenario
for sure.
Speaker 1 (06:49):
Well, Tim is camp is underway now with your flyers
down there and Maria Stein, what are your I guess
goals in a big picture, since as the head coach,
with all those guys to replaced and a senior class
that's kind of been waiting their turn, what are some
of the overarching goals for camp here?
Speaker 2 (07:07):
Yeah, definitely, we just have to sort through personnel and
you know, find our best players and then you know,
if we have to shuffle the deck and move some
people around to get our best players on the field.
But you know, you we do all these days with
shorts and helmets, you know, and some kids look okay,
(07:28):
you know, and other kids look really good, and then
when you put pads on, everything's different and some kids
really rise and some kids kind of fade off. So
you know, we're just in that process. We want to
find the kids that can carry their paths and are
confident and you know, want to play physical. Marrying Local Football.
Speaker 1 (07:46):
Well, it's been good enough to win four straight championships
and Marrying Local would love to make it a fifth.
Here later in the season, Tim Goodwin, head coach at
Marrying Local Camp, is underway. The season beckons good luck
Speaker 2 (07:59):
All right, thanks all outsid
