Speaker 1 (00:00):
The basketball tournament wrapped up yesterday and Carmen's Crew won
it for a second time. And a part of Carmen's Crew.
You don't have to be a former Buck guy. Apparently
former b G falcon Scott Thomas was on the team.
He joins us from the airport. They're about to fly home.
Scott feeling pretty good. Huh oh. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (00:19):
It was a great, great win, great experience. Anytime you
have a chance to play to win a championship, it's
very meaningful and we came out on top.

Speaker 1 (00:28):
Now, for folks who may not know the connection, you're
a Central Ohio guy, so you've probably played with a
lot of these guys over the years and know them.
Talk about how you got hooked up to be on
the team.

Speaker 2 (00:40):
Yeah. I go back and we play open gyms when
I was playing overseas to get some summer runs in
and just develop some friendships with some guys. And Leon Rodgers,
our head coach, and Jared Sullinger I've known for a
long time, and you know, they had asked me to
play and I just worked out this year that we
were able to to win a championship.

Speaker 1 (01:01):
So are you still playing professionally overseas then, and this
just kind of fits in with your schedule.

Speaker 2 (01:07):
Yeah. No, I'm actually retired from overseas. I am an
assistant principal at Bucket Valley East Elementary School, So this
just fits into my summer schedule where I'm able to
have a little two week break and play some games.

Speaker 1 (01:21):
When was the last year of your professional days? Has
that been very long?

Speaker 2 (01:26):
I think twenty eighteen was my last year.

Speaker 1 (01:28):
Okay, so obviously you've been still running for the last
five or six years and playing hoops right.

Speaker 2 (01:34):
Yeah, absolutely, you know, I still play as much as
I can. Gives me a reason to get up and
go work out, and also having this tournament coming on
right now, it kind of gives you a little motivation
easier to get in the gym when you know you're
going to play for something.

Speaker 1 (01:49):
Now, for folks who didn't get to watch a lot
of the tournament, how was your playing time? How did
that break down? And how many guys are on the team.

Speaker 2 (01:58):
We had twelve guys. I probably played about fifteen minutes
a game. We had a bunch of pros. Everybody had
a huge part in our in our championship. We talked
about it yesterday. One of our strengths is our depths,
and they seemed like every game has a different story
and they were kind of different unsung heroes in each

(02:21):
each game that you know, led to us ended up
winning the championship.

Speaker 1 (02:25):
We're talking with Scott Thomas, the Bowling Green grad and
a member of Carmen's crew. They just won the basketball tournament. Uh,
you got to qualify for that thing and then play
in the bracket. Take us through what you had to
do as a team to get into it, and then
how many games did it take to win it?

Speaker 2 (02:44):
Yeah, So since Carmen Crue had won it before, they
were automatic, Uh, kind of an automatic bid. And with that,
you know, you get seeded accordingly, and we were a
three seed this year and we were able to play
six games. It's just like into double a tournament. There's
sixty four teams and survive in advance and you play

(03:04):
and just keep advancing to the championship.

Speaker 1 (03:07):
It's nice to have that exemption, right as a former champion.
So that worked out well. And I guess, as you
when did you guys feel like you really started to
hit your stride during this tournament or did you really
have it going.

Speaker 2 (03:18):
From the jew we got. We had a lot of guys.
Only half our team were palling Buckeyes. We had a
couple of guys from East Tennessee, we had a guy
from ut Texas and obviously myself so and Jeff Gibbs
is forty four. I played at Otterbyn University, so we
had a mix of guys. But we came together probably
about two weeks prior to our first game, and you

(03:40):
could see right from the start we had we had
the pieces. I think after the dating game we started
really playing well and we played Team Takeover at Louisville
and then we played the Kentucky alumni team. Los Familia
are able to beat those two and those are I
think two of our best wins. We didn't have our
best game last night, but we were able to hold

(04:00):
on enough to get the win.

Speaker 1 (04:02):
And you guys split the million dollar first prize.

Speaker 2 (04:05):
Correct, Yeah, that's right, all of our We're a team.
Some teams do it differently where they have different amounts
for different players, but our team, you know, our mottos
were all the same and everybody got the same cut.

Speaker 1 (04:17):
Scott, before I let you go take me through yesterday's
championship game and how you felt you contributed and how
it played out. You guys got the close win at
the end with Jared hitting the winning shot.

Speaker 2 (04:28):
Yeah, you know, I played a lot early. I played
about twelve minutes in the first half. The second half,
you know, we had some rotations that were working, and
so I didn't get in until actually the eelam ending,
which is basically whatever the four minutes, whatever the time is,
you have to get eight more points. And I got

(04:48):
stubbed in to play defense because they had a lot
of wings and a lot of forwards, so they subbed
me in for defense, and I was fortunate enough to
be on the court when Jared hit the shot.

Speaker 1 (05:00):
Well, that game was played at Directional University in Philadelphia.
Scott Thomas, the Bowling Green grad literally about to get
on a plane, fly back to home in a southern
of central Ohio and return to being an assistant principal.
What school is it again.

Speaker 2 (05:15):
Buckeye Valley East Elementary School, just downtown Ashley, Ohio.

Speaker 1 (05:19):
That's your home school district. So that's great you're back
there as an administrator and you're a TBT champion. Now, Scott,
we appreciate your time, safe travels back home.

Speaker 2 (05:29):
Congratulations Yeah, thanks, dott I appreciate it.
