Speaker 1 (00:00):
From the WYMA Sports desk. After two games where the
red starting pitchers went a total of two and a
third innings, Cincinnati needed a strong start last night from
the newly acquired Zach Latel, and the veteran provided it.
He went seven innings, allowing just three hits in one
run as the Reds posted a five to one win
at Wrigley over the Cubs. Cincinnati broke a one to

(00:22):
one tie with four of the seventh, three of them
coming on a home run by Spencer Steer. After the game,
Reds manager Terry Francona commented on the good effort from
starting pitchers, Zach Lttel.

Speaker 2 (00:35):
That's pretty good. I mean, I mean, you know, first
two guys get on, you got some really dangerous guys
coming up, gets out of that, and then I mean
it was kind of fastball split and man, I mean
just you know, he doesn't I think he walked two,
which is probably more than he usually does. But he
got us deep into the game, put up zeros. You know,

(00:55):
he gave up the one solo con That was really
exciting to watch.

Speaker 1 (01:00):
The Reds manager also talked about Spencer Steer finding his
groove at the plate well what I.

Speaker 2 (01:06):
Would say is, if you take his first fifty to
sixty at bats away, his numbers aren't down. And he
did that because he's a team guy. He probably shouldn't
have been playing. So he's the guy he is right
now and good for us.

Speaker 1 (01:21):
The win puts the Reds a season high six games
over five hundred at sixty and fifty four. They remained
three games behind San Diego for the third and final
National League wild card spot. The Reds and Cubs wrap
up the series at two twenty today, Cincinnati looking for
a sweep as they run out Andrew Abbott against the
Cubs Kid Horton. We'll have the game with the pregame

(01:43):
at one point fifty. Of course, part of the problem
for Reds starting pitching the high referenced earlier was Nick
Flodolo's early exit from Monday Nights game. He left with
a blister. Unfortunately that has landed him on the disabled list.
In New York work another nice win for the Guardians
as they edged the Mets of three to two go

(02:05):
ahead hit off the bat of Stephen Kwan a seventh
inning single. Meanwhile, the Guardian's bullpen had to cover the
last four innings Logan Allen allowed two runs over five innings,
but then four relievers combined to blank the Mets. In fact,
no hit them over the last four innings and none
of them issue a walk either. The last reliever was

(02:27):
Cade Smith here in his fourth save with a perfect ninth,
and afterward he talked about the bullpen's collective effort.

Speaker 3 (02:34):
It's huge knowing that we had a bullpen full of
guys who are willing to step up and go ahead
and compete and leave it all, you know, on the
field between lines when their name is called like that
is a huge, huge part of that culture down in
the bullpen, that everybody's ready to go to pull their
own weight and to contribute as best we can.

Speaker 1 (02:48):
Cleveland looks for the sweep this afternoon as they send
out Gavin Williams against David Peterson, and don't look now.
The Guardians have put themselves into the wild card chase
in the American League. They're just a game and a
half behind the Yankees for the third wild card spot,
with just the Rangers between them and the Pinstripers. Of course,

(03:10):
the Tigers continue atop the American League Central by a
wide margin, even though they have been scuffling of late. Yesterday,
they fell at home to the Twins six to three.
The Tigers have alternated wins and losses over their last
six games, but still own a seven game lead over
Cleveland atop the AL Central. Elsewhere, Kansas City fell to
