Speaker 1 (00:00):
Buckeyes are back on the field this week and they
are in Seattle to take on the Washington Huskies. We're
going to talk about that with Mark Coons from BCSN
of course, formerly here a Limo with TV forty four
and WOSN. Mark. Good to have you back. Good to
have the Buckeyes back after a week off. I'm sure
they think it was somewhat beneficial. I don't know about

(00:22):
this early and off week, but a chance for Ohio
State to recalibrate after three wins to begin the season.

Speaker 2 (00:30):
Yeah, they are eager to get back into it. And
you know it's interesting they've got to go all the
way out to the West coast and play Washington first
Big Ten game, first road game. And you know, there's
certainly been a narrative last season. So far this season
with the expanded Big Ten, the so called traditional Big
Ten teams have struggled when they've gone out west to

(00:52):
play USC, UCLA, Oregon, and Washington out on the West Coast.
I think it's something like three to thirteen in the
regular season in those matchups. So Ohio State they actually
are changing how they're doing things a little bit this week.
I do you remember last year they went up to Oregon,
lost to the Ducks. In the regular season, they flew
out on Friday, played Saturday. That's not what they're doing

(01:14):
this year. They flew out Thursday, have all day Friday
to acclimate, and then they play Saturday this year. So
Ryan dasaid he talked to NFL teams, talked to some
other sports teams about acclimating with multiple time zone transitions,
and that's what they decided to do. And you know,
television giving them a little bit of a breakdown on
the back end as well, because the following week Minnesota,

(01:34):
that's a night game, so you do have a few
more hours to prepare and get the bodies reacclimated to
the East coast after you get back from Washington this week.

Speaker 1 (01:43):
Yeah, it's always a bit of more of art than science.
I think of how to travel to the West coast
or multiple time zones, and you know, some people like
to do it one way, others like to do it another.
But of course, when you lose on the West Coast
do you think about changing things. So if Oregon didn't

(02:05):
bastardize the rules last year and steal a time out,
they probably would have gone on Friday as normal. But
that's how things work. When you're a coach, you're a
bit superstitious. They don't like to admit that, but you
know well.

Speaker 2 (02:18):
And Ryan Day also said they also are relying on
the experience they had last year with the not so
much the roads full, but for the Cotton Bowl in
the National Championship Game, where it's it's a similar type
of setting, a similar type of travel schedule where you're
giving yourself a day or two at the new place
to get ready. So they are relying on that experience

(02:38):
from last year as well. So it's not quite fully
just over changing the change. But this worked for us
as well. So we'll see if they lay in ag
and lose to Washington, they'll do something different next year.

Speaker 1 (02:50):
Well, that's where all that money goes. That all of
you buy either you know, souvenirs or concessions or ticket
prices or Buckeye clubs or whatever they are, and you
buy memorabilia and you donate and all of that. That's
where all your money goes. So they can go a
day early when they go out to the West Coast
and other things. So let's talk about the game Washington

(03:14):
three and oh so nothing to complain about there you see,
Davis really doesn't count. Then wins over Colorado State Washington State.
Nothing special there. But this team has scored what one
hundred and seventy points or so in three games, so
it looks like offensively, at least to this point, they
have been prolific.

Speaker 2 (03:34):
They have not punted it this month.

Speaker 1 (03:37):
Well there you go.

Speaker 2 (03:37):
They have their last twenty one possessions, not counting end
of game and end of half situations, they have scored
the last twenty one straight possessions. Nineteen of those have
been touchdown, so they have been scoring points, lots of
points that It's a very dynamic offense led by Demon
Williams and Junior the quarterback to the reigning Big Ten
Player of the Week. Had a huge game against Washington State,

(04:00):
which is a big game out there, the Apple Cup game,
and it was at Washington State and they really blue
open the game, blew away the Cougars in the fourth
quarter of that game, scoring twenty eight points in the
fourth quarter is a is a thirty one eight game,
I think going in the fourth quarter, man of winning
fifty four to twenty eight. So they really came on

(04:21):
strong in that fourth quarter of that offense is prolific.
They've got a solid running back in Coleman Boston, an
excellent receiver, so they've got the talent there. And let's
not forget this is a Washington team that two years
ago played for the national championship. Different head coach, obviously
a lot of different players, but it is a strong
program and Seattle is not an easy place to win.
It's one of the better environments in the old Pac twelve.

(04:43):
It's still a lowed environment there in Seattle, and it's
not going to be an easy task for Io State
and they're taking it very seriously, as they should, no
doubt about it.

Speaker 1 (04:53):
We're talking with Mark Coons talking Buckeye football. They are
at Washington tomorrow. Of course, we'll have it for you
right here at two o'clock, kickoff at three point thirty.
As for Washington, defensively, maybe not as impressive, but they
are holding their three opponents well under one hundred yards
rushing on the season. Admittedly not three very strong programs,

(05:16):
but their defense, I guess the strength of it is,
at least to this point, stopping the run.

Speaker 2 (05:23):
Right, They're a manda man defense, and it'll be interest
to see if they continue to do that against Ohio State.
If you're going to put a secondary one on one,
a dB one on one on Jeremiah Smith, Carnell Tate,
et cetera. If they do that, certainly not something'll have
as they could exploit. Buckeys aren't necessarily expecting them to

(05:44):
stay man demand because for that reason right there, And
we'll see if bo Jackson can build upon what he
did last time out. And Ryan Day is also very
pleased with what he saw from James Peoples in the
win over Ohio, So Ohio State feeling pretty good about
the rushing attack. Certainly, we've talked in the past the

(06:05):
short yard situations, the issues they've had, particularly in the
red zone, and how that a lot of different factors
going into that, but that's something Ohio State is going
to want to clean up. But it'll basically see if
they can run the ball against Washington, if Washington tries
to really take away the pass game.

Speaker 1 (06:20):
Now, you mentioned red zone efficiency, that is maybe one
of the anxieties that the Buckeyes have. What else do
you sense or what have they said that they needed
to work on here during the off week.

Speaker 2 (06:36):
I think one of the interesting points Ryan Day made
earlier this week was he was essentially asked about style points. Now,
if you've been paying attention to the line, the betting line,
it's been going down. I think Ohio State began like
an eleven a half point favorite, and now they're down
to seven and a half on some of the lines.
And all of a sudden, if Ohio State goes out

(06:57):
to Washington only wins by ten points, oh oh no,
the sky is falling. And Ryan Day is quick the
back off that saying the number one thing is to
win the game. And yes, style points are a factor
still in college football, but they're most concerned about winning
the game and playing up to their own standard. That's
been one of the cliches we've been hearing more and

(07:17):
more from college football coaches of late, playing a faceless
Opponent's not about who we're playing, about how we are playing,
the how, not the who is how, Sharon Moore puts
it up in Ann Arbor. So I think that's one
of the things that Ohio State is very much looking at,
is their own standard. What they have done during this
off week, what they have done to get ready for
this next challenging stretch of football, because three of their

(07:39):
next four games are on the road. Now, granted they
might not necessarily be very tough with punch. Washington is
solid home from Minnesota, then they go to Illinois, go
to Wisconsin, and we know the struggles the badger they've
had this yere is Luke fickle and certainly Illinois exposed
this past weekend by Indiana. But still three road games
in your next four games. That's something Ohio State's very
much looking as a challenge coming up in the next month.

Speaker 1 (08:02):
Yeah, and I think mark the Buckeyes thus far, the
defense has certainly been the more impressive unit, so I
would think this past week they're trying to tweak up
the offense a little bit, maybe get it more closer
to full speed here right, I would agree.

Speaker 2 (08:19):
And going back to the defense, I think one of
the interesting matchups in this game with Washington. The Washington
offensive line isn't necessarily solid. They do take a couple
of sacks the game. You put in what Matt Patricia
has done the last couple of weeks with Ohio State defense,
the way he has schemed things up, that might make
for a long day for Demon Williams. And he's a

(08:41):
very mobile quarterback, very quick to accelerate. You're probably going
to have maybe like an RVL Reefs spying on him.
And we've seen the athleticism of arvel Reefs the first
month of the season. But I think that's gonna be
really interesting to see how Matt Patricia schemes up against
a very mobile quarterback this week.

Speaker 1 (08:58):
And tomorrow and Seattle Stadium, Washington will have it for you.
Kick off at three point thirty here on your home
with the Buckeyes. Mark Coons. Always great to visit with
you at Taco with you football. We'll check in again
next week.

Speaker 2 (09:11):
Alrighty sounds good, Tod. Thank you,

Cardiac Cowboys

Cardiac Cowboys

The heart was always off-limits to surgeons. Cutting into it spelled instant death for the patient. That is, until a ragtag group of doctors scattered across the Midwest and Texas decided to throw out the rule book. Working in makeshift laboratories and home garages, using medical devices made from scavenged machine parts and beer tubes, these men and women invented the field of open heart surgery. Odds are, someone you know is alive because of them. So why has history left them behind? Presented by Chris Pine, CARDIAC COWBOYS tells the gripping true story behind the birth of heart surgery, and the young, Greatest Generation doctors who made it happen. For years, they competed and feuded, racing to be the first, the best, and the most prolific. Some appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, operated on kings and advised presidents. Others ended up disgraced, penniless, and convicted of felonies. Together, they ignited a revolution in medicine, and changed the world.
