Episode 011 - Bridging Self-Care & Cosmetology to Psych/Mental Health Nursing

In this episode, Sharrell shares her unique background in cosmetology and how teaching self-care to her clients eventually extended to helping her classmates with advice. She describes her personal "recon work" of stepping outside her comfort zone to focus on self-development, which empowered her to support others. We explore her life jouRNey from studying psychology earlier on to figuring out how to enter healthcare; though she didn't believe she was fully qualified, she eaRNed her spot in nursing school through determination and divine intervention. Sharrell reflects on her experience as one of the few Black students in her program, the "trauma bonds" of nursing school, her plans for a DNP in psychiatric-mental health, and shares her aspirations to serve Black women in mental health. She also discusses her involvement with nursing organizations, the value of volunteering, and networking with mentors. Finally, Sharrell offers practical advice for future nurses, including getting out of your own way, staying organized, and avoiding procrastination.

ABOUT THE GUEST:  

Sharrell Page is a dedicated nursing student at Samuel Merritt University, currently in the second semester of her junior year, pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. With a diverse academic foundation that includes African American Studies and Social Science, she is preparing for a future career in nursing. Sharrell has consistently maintained a GPA of 3.5 or higher throughout her studies, most recently achieving a 3.9 GPA, earning her a spot on the Dean’s List.   She is an active member of the National Black Nurses Association (NBNA) through the California Bay Area Black Nurses Association (BABNA) chapter and is in the process of becoming a member of Chi Eta Phi Sorority Incorporated, Lambda Chi Chi Beta chapter, an organization committed to "service for humanity."   Sharrell’s professional experience spans customer service and personal wellness, with a particular focus on cosmetology and self-care, bridging her passion for healthcare and nursing. After earning her BSN, she intends to pursue a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) with a specialization in Psychiatric Mental Health. She is deeply committed to promoting holistic health, particularly for individuals within the African diaspora, and believes in the importance of addressing all aspects of well-being for true healing.   Sharrell's goal is to restore compassion to healthcare and to address healthcare disparities by ensuring that every individual feels valued and included in their care.
