New York. It's huge and gross. Oh it's been yucky.

It's uh, it's sort of you know, it's it's really
been unseasonably comfortable in southern California. Overcast on the west
side this morning. You know, it's just it's like sixty
five degrees. I mean it's just like it's perfect. You.

No, it's hot and very close to you up here,
but we've been at least getting a little light clouds
in the morning.

So it's yeah, keeps a cool lot of heat.

it's it's uncomfortable walking the dog.

concrete dog park, and there's just no relief. I thought,

And it's a beach.

It's the Bay, so it's a beach on the bay
and it's a dog beach so the dogs can be
free and play in the water and swim.

And that's what we did yesterday.

a good relief.

two in New York City. And also the good news

a very cool eighteen hundred's themed to go in in
Seamy Valley, which is really going to be fun for

Yeah, so today's this episode, Season two, episode twelve.

The Talking Machine.
Speaker 6 (09:39):
Yeah. The Talking Machine is episode number thirty six in
the series, premiered on January fourteenth, nineteen seventy six. Written
by Harold Swanton, who wrote three other episodes of Little House.
If I Should Wake before I Die, one of my favorites,
The Hunters, and I'll Ride the Wind. The Talking Machine
was directed by one of our absolute favorites, Victor French. Allison,

You have a synopsis which Bally Bally doesn't justice, But
I fight. I was a Nelly and Laura again again
as per usual, both clamoring for the affectious boy at
school and what is in the water in Walnut Grove.
Speaker 7 (10:24):
Even the children are like, I must have a wifefriend.
Like they're just like a little, a little over the
top about this. It's just like out of control. Angered.
When Jason indicates a preference for Laura over Nelly attempts
to sabotage the relationship by using her new fangled talking.
Speaker 8 (10:38):
Machine No Kidd as a malicious tool for Laura's humiliation.
But in the end, Laura and Walnut Grove survived first
ever brushed with reported cruelty.
Speaker 6 (10:48):
Yeah, yeah, Now, I just want to say, at the
end of this episode, I was a little bummed and
I saw Laura carved j R. Plus l I in
a tree girl.

boit Lander did exactly the same shot for this he
did in Back to School where the track, the walking
and the tracking through the trees to the to the
j R plus Ally moment. Uh, Laura falls for every
blonde guy she meets.

At seas shadowing, older shadowing with the.

Whole older, older blonde guys.

I'm like, his voice has changed in your eight what
are you doing?

I think that's really interesting because because Melissa generally has
not been in Melissa, not Laura, but Melissa has generally
had no interest in blondes at all. So it's sort
of an interesting thing for her.
Speaker 8 (11:55):
Loa And now I checked the ages because the marvelous,
the marvelous Eric Shaite.
Speaker 7 (11:59):
Now, my mother used to joke about the Shae brothers.

Back in the days in Hollywood.

There were the Shade brother Eric Shay, Christopher Shay. I
forget how many they were, but they were the Shade Brothers.
They were all marvelous child actors and they worked all
the time. They were in everything, and between the three
of them there, IMDb just goes from here to the
end of the ear.

But they were and everything. And my mother used to
joke about it being an audition to go, oh.
Speaker 8 (12:20):
It's the Shase. As they get older, there's always another Shay.
They're breeding them in a lab, you know, in a basement.
Speaker 7 (12:27):
Just the endless Shay Brother.
Speaker 8 (12:29):
So he's one of the many Shas and is here menudo.
He's lovely Shay boys, but there's it's the boys from Brazil.
We don't know they're cloning them, but the Shame boys.
And he was sixteen when we did this, so he's
not at least he's not thirty seven, you.

This air January nineteen seventy six. I turned fourteen on
the eighteenth that year, so this was SHO. I was
only thirteen, which means Melissa Gilbert was eleven, an eleven
year older. I remember being an eleven twelve year old, yes,
getting crushes and puppyla, but like on another eleven year

old life. When I was about twelve almost thirteen, I
did have a boyfriend. He was also twelve, and it
was very sweet and like normal people.
Speaker 5 (13:20):
Sixteen is like, yeah, that's it's another universe.
Speaker 7 (13:25):
It's more than like fifteen and seventeen.
Speaker 8 (13:27):
You could kind of see them. They're both in high school.
They have something to discuss. But she's in middle school
or late elementary school.
Speaker 7 (13:35):
He's in high school. Would be learning to drive.
Speaker 5 (13:38):
Is basically she's in sixth grade. He's in tenth grader, no,
eleventh grade.
Speaker 8 (13:42):
Yeah, and even if a girl, yeah I remember eleven, Okay,
you fall for you know whoever it was that year,
Sean Cassidy, You fall for some boy who's much older. Wow,
I gotta tell you, sixteen year old boys are not
interested in eleven year old girls unless.
Speaker 7 (13:56):
There's a terribly wrong there.
Speaker 3 (13:58):
That fired for him too.
Speaker 7 (14:01):
Sixteen year boys to be like, why why are you
even speaking to me?
Speaker 6 (14:04):
But that you know, of course that's the that, of
course is the cuteness of the whole thing is that
that's just such an unlikely deal. And the way it
ends is so sweet, I think, in a very unexpected way.
Speaker 7 (14:17):
But he's like a agreeing to date her.
Speaker 6 (14:23):
It's not tip it too far here. Now I want
to talk about George Firth. George Firth was Hannibal Godfrey
in this wonderful actor writer always played flim flammers in
his career. I met George birth in the nineties when
I was doing Company in Long Beach. George of course
wrote Company.
Speaker 7 (14:43):
George Firth wrote freaking Company.
Speaker 3 (14:45):
I was not so George right, Yeah?
Speaker 6 (14:49):
Yeah, he wrote Company with Stephen Sondheim. And he was
a neighbor of mine in Beechwood Canyon. I didn't know this.
He invited. He had a bunch of cast member is over.
I mean he was George Firth was effusively complimentary about
our production of Company and was look projecting that it
should go to Broadway. He was calling Steve and he

you know all of this that he was. We went
to I was not Bobby in the show, by the way,
so it was that was Patrick Cassidy who did a
wonderful job in that. But we I went to his house.
It was like I walked around. I walked like two
blocks around the corner in Beachwood Canyon and there was
George Firth's beautiful house looking out had same view I

had looking out over the city of Los Angeles. It
was just he was a lovely, lovely guy and so funny,
clever and and in this just as he always was,
just sort of like dancing as fast as he can
to make a deal of some kind.
Speaker 3 (15:52):
Yeah, yeah, and he was in everything. He was in
what was it?
Speaker 7 (15:57):
There was the thing the Scarlett O'Hara wars as to do,
and he was George Kukor in that. I mean, yeah,
George Firth.

Was what was it? Wasn't he in Butch Cassie and Sunday?

And I think so, yeah, he was in yeh, he
was in.
Speaker 6 (16:09):
Butch Cassie, wasn't he Like he worked for the the
bank company. He's he's guarding the money and there he's
like that.

Guy in everything. And then it was so weird. It's
like and then he was writing these plays for a
friend and he wrote Company.

If he wrote company, they know him, it's sell as
a writer.

This is like and I know this episode eighty gazillion times,
and this is the first time I realized, Oh my god,
that's George Firth.

I know he's he's he's he's so terrific. I want
to talk about look so on the Nelly mean scale,
how awful are you and this? I didn't think you
were as awful as we've been talking about you being awful.
You were sort of like you weren't terrible in this thing?

how badly I've heard her when she's crying.

Ruined her life in the school. I've just destroyed her emotionally.
I have revealed I've really hurt her. She's really like
hurt by.

That nice, so manipulent glee with which I did it.

This episode, by the way, is also the first episode
where Willie is told to stand in the corner, and
it's the beginning with the running gag someone noticed the
worst time.

Also, why didn't we feel that was a bit harsh
for the comment that he said? His comment was clever
and funny. Why is he being punished or I don't
get it?

And miss By looks like things that are going out
of control in that class go.

Yeah, but at thirteen it makes a lot.

I think, well, look, it's benign infatuation. Nothing's going to happen, right,
That's the sort of the sweetness of it is this,
It's this benign thing.

And can I stand Also, Sue is so brilliant in this,
Melissa so Anderson, this is I think one of her
greatest episodes.

Eye roll at the dinner table with Jason Tanya. Jason said,
and she just like her eyes go right back into
her head. She rolls her eyes so hard she almost
hurts herself at the dinner.

And she feels like the greatest teenage I roll in
the history of Earth at the I really there were
several scenes where I had to hand it to her
that was really good.

understand where what we're actually tracking here. So we still

really starting in the mercantile. We're introducing the whole concept
of the of the talking the machine. The talking machine
is going to be the problem.

And the Olsens don't know why they would have such
a contraption, so they're not to buy it. And this
reminds me of the very first time I ever heard
about Twitter and Facebook. Why someone told me, and again
my first reaction was, why would I use that? Why
do we need to upreat people on my life? Like
who's watching this, who's reading this?

I don't get it.

I think this, like so many episodes we've talked about,
this episode is prescient projecting into the future. Now, look,
it also has the advantage of a lot of knowledge.
Where Okay, Jason's projections about where the world's going, Yes,
that's fine, but the social media that that audio thing
that can hurt people, that that was prescient and it.

I mean when when I'm skipping ahead again, but when
Nelly is recording Laura and you just see Willy doing

a guy who trash.

Anyway, so we were introduced to this talking machine that
Olson's pass on. Then we go to school where the thirsty,
thirsty girls.

I'm thirsting after this boy, Jason.

The thirsty girls. I love that girl.

It's like every week it's like, oh, look something in
pants and.

Even Laura have a similar taste in men because they
always want the same.

Jason is a little mini scientist and he is trying
to do an exp with the Benjamin Franklin experiment of
discovering electricity by flying a kite and a lightning storm.

Now another fun fact, My sister and I absolutely tried
to do.

Yeah, Benjamin Franklopsy didn't really discover electricity. Electricity. They knew
it existed since one hundred years before. They just hadn't
figured how to use it or what his thing was. Hey,
that lightning stuff, that's electricity.

That was a theory they're going is likening electricity. I
think it's electricity.
Speaker 8 (22:42):
He's like, yes, it's electricity. And he set out to
show that. So he said, I bet I could capture it.
And now the story about the key and the kite and.

Of like a little George Washington chopping down the cherry
tree thing. They're not totally sure this went down that
they think they know when happened.

he ascended this. But everyone's like, does anybody else there?

What he described was really static electricity from the lightning
storm catching the keys. Had lightning actually struck the key,
like everybody who does this in a cartoon or a
television show.

Franklin, his son would be dead. It would send you
to the hospital or kill you.

It's well as as it would have killed Laura. I
mean that she's just so like ooh, and she falls down.
But it would have been much more.

In child that size, she Doc Baker would not have
been able to She would have died.

People, A lot of people have gotten hurt very very
very badly fooling around with keys on.

I want stuff because when I was a kid and
I wanted to, of course run out in the pouring
rain with the key, my mother was like, you know,
that's insanely dangerous and that the string gets wet, and
like that's not how that works really, because you'll like die.

They had some sense, they and then I been with this.

I looked at it when how and they're going, yeah,
we're not even sure now if a bend friend really
did it, but they're going, no, you can't get wet.

He and his son were like under a shelter because
obviously they couldn't actually get wet when they're fully with electricity.
Like these two children are in the show running around
in the rain, and obviously they had to keep stuff
dry and know if it was a direct hit from
the lightning that close to them, it had been taken

But it's also when you see her crying to Paul
and she is just destroyed. She is really like her
life is ruined.

She is really severely damaged by this and trying and
he's like and even.

Says, oh, dear, sweet Nelly, like it's her, it's right exactly,
and they talk about me in the way she's crying.
I'm like, I've really done some damage.

But she's bad off.

She well, but she felt better at the end just
knowing that Jason loved her. And that's the end of
the story. And it all were and you know, and
Laura falls in love with you a blonde. The blondes
keep coming, keeping in love and uh, the happy credit story.
