Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hey, music wanderers, I'm beat Map. You're obsessively curious guide
to all things live and loud in San Diego. My
life's mission hunting down the best sounds in every corner
of this sun soaked city, from the echoing buzz of
arena shows to the late night strumming and back alley bars.
If you're like me and can't sit still when there's
a beat calling somewhere nearby, strap in. I'm about to
(00:22):
give you the inside scoop on what's popping this week.
First things first, if you only take one tip from me,
it's this, don't just skim the big banners. On any
given night, San Diego's side streets and legendary venues are
humming with talent. Tonight June thirteenth is a classic example.
At Humphrey's Concerts by the Bay, the California Honey Drops
and the Dip are bringing their soulful grooves to Shelter Island.
(00:45):
Tickets usually start around forty dollars, but balcony seats are
worth the splurge for that sunset bayview. For something fuzzier,
benches play at Music Box while Panchico's dreamy shoegaze is
taking over Soma with a crowd that's as passionate as
the band. Over at Kasba, Chuck Prophet is slinging those
rootsy rock anthems that spot never disappoints for up close
(01:06):
energy if you're plotting your week circle. June fourteenth, Ivan
Cornejo is at Pachanga Arena with his Marata Tour Parte two,
bringing that achingly emotional Mexican folk pop to the masses
for a taste of nostalgic pop. Bare Naked Ladies are
back on tour and usually deliver a show that feels
like a weird, wonderful time capsule. Elvis Costello and the
(01:28):
Impostors are coming up soon at Humphreys Too, with a
special show full of early hits performed by an ensemble
that's as much family as a band. Trust me, those
guys turn every concert into a surprise party. Looking Ahead,
peach Pit and Bristol Moroney are teaming up for a
double bill that's tailor made for indie rock lovers, and
Moondaddy and Junako at Soda Bar will give you that
(01:48):
dreamy local band on the rise magic that makes you
feel like you're part of the city's secret music history.
Don't sleep on up and comers like Anaka Rose and
Emmy Grace, who are lighting up Voodoo Room at the
House of Blues this week. Now for my favorite stomping grounds,
the Kasba still wins my heart as my venue pick
of the week. There's something raw and immediate about that
(02:08):
sweat soaked little room. Plus you're almost guaranteed to see
a future star play three feet from your face. That
being said, Humphrey's Under the Stars is my go to
when I want those. This is why I live in
San Diego. Vibes and shout out to the Rady Shell
at Jacob's Park. It's waterfront grandeur with a sound system
sent from heaven. I'm already counting down to their summer
(02:30):
season opener with the San Diego Symphony on June twenty seventh.
When I'm not chasing guitars or saxophones, I'm keeping tabs
on the local gems who keep this scene ticking. Lately,
I've been hooked on the soulful stomp of the Sodo
six playing Baba Coffee Tonight, the offbeat crooning of Sean McCole,
and the jazz wizardry of the Melissa Aldona Quartet playing
(02:52):
at the Athenaeum later this week. There's also a thriving
scene for Latin sounds and experimental pop bubbling up. You
can catch it in the way open mics here feel
like showcases. My weekly routine is not complete without a
stop by jazz vespers or an open mic night at
venues like Gonzo Ramen or Baba Coffee. There's no better
way to catch tomorrow's headliners. Today. What gets my heart
(03:14):
racing most the festival scene. While June is a warm
up month, buzz is brewing about the upcoming Radyshell Summer Festival,
and word on the street is there'll be pop up
events at North Park and Adams Avenue as we head
into July. I'm eyeing those multi stage marathons with the
glee of someone planning escape routes to catch every set.
(03:34):
For the fellow adventurers who crave off map discoveries, here's
my not so secret stash, the back patio shows at
Hanger seventy six Brewery, the spontaneous performances at Gonzo Ramen,
and the impromptu jazz jams tucked away in North Park alleys.
Sometimes you'll only hear about these an hour beforehand. But
that's where my years of digging payoff. Here's how I
(03:55):
always land those last minute gigs. I've got four text
threads with other music nerds. I check song Kick and
DUSD every morning, and I never scroll past local Facebook
events without giving them a solid look. The San Diego
Readers show calendar is also
