Speaker 2 (01:18):
Welcome back to another episode of Living Unapologetically Beyond the Uniform.
I'm your host, Renee Jones Hassan, and today we're going
to be diving deep into a conversation that's truly essential
for many of our many of us female veterans. So

(01:38):
it's about the power of mindset shifts and embracing your
identity beyond the uniform. So at first, I want to
acknowledge that you know, transitioning out of the military is
not just about changing jobs. It's about redefining your identity,
your purpose, and your perspective. And trust me, I know

(02:01):
I understand how challenging and scary that can be at times.
But what I also know is that we are incredibly resilient.
We're resourceful and capable of thriving in this new chapter.
So many of us may feel isolated or lost after

(02:24):
leaving the military, and it's actually a surprising number. Even
when I'm talking to people like other female veterans, it's
about half of them that feel this way, and they
deal with it by themselves.

Speaker 3 (02:37):
They deal with in silence, because.

Speaker 2 (02:40):
You know, many of us feel like we really cannot
relate when we come out of the service. But I
want to encourage you. You are not alone in this,
and that's what we're going to explore today. We're going
to explore how you can confidently step into your next chapter.
But first I want to give yourself permission to explore

(03:04):
and redefine who you are. Your military services. It has
served you well, but it doesn't have to limit you.
And I know many of us we come out with
you know, challenges, physical challenges, mental and emotional challenges, financial challenges,
and you know, trying to get past that can can

(03:27):
really can really bring it.

Speaker 3 (03:29):
Keep us down.

Speaker 2 (03:31):
But what I want you to do is just being in.

Speaker 3 (03:38):
Let it doesn't have to limit you. Instead, you want to.

Speaker 2 (03:40):
Let your journey in the military empower you as you
create a new stories just from a new story for yourself. Remember,
you have incredible skills that you've developed, like leadership, like
teamwork and adaptability, and those skills are not just military skills,
their lifelong skills, and they'll help you thrive.

Speaker 3 (04:01):
One of the things I do like to.

Speaker 2 (04:04):
Well, one of the things that I do get reminded
of often is that we have everything we need inside
of us. You know, we just have to tap into that.
And I want to share something that happened to me
about two nights ago. I don't know if it was
last night or the night before, but I was. I
got a DM from one of my high school friends.

(04:26):
She sent me a picture of an article that I
wrote in high school on racism, and it really you know,
I told her that she always seemed to show up
at a time where sometimes I don't believe some of
the things that I've done. But I only say that
to say that, you know, sometimes you need those reminders.

(04:49):
You need people like that to show up and remind
you of your accomplishments.

Speaker 3 (04:54):
Not so for me.

Speaker 2 (04:55):
It was a time where there are times I go
through moments of doubt of really thinking some of the
things that I have done that I'm making it up,
like doing it sounds crazy, but you just but just
to get that validation like no, you actually did this.
This is you know, you you wrote this paper and

(05:16):
you had so many people that were involved in the
process and you know, And that's another thing I want
to touch on with this mindset shift. You want to
surround yourself with people that are going to encourage you
to to to do more, to do better. You know,
if you're constantly in a group of people that's talking about,

(05:37):
you know, what's not going right for them, You're eventually
going to see everything in that way. So if you
surround yourself with people who are elevating, who are doing more,
who can encourage you to step outside of the box.

Speaker 3 (05:51):
That we know so much.

Speaker 2 (05:52):
That is the military, you know, that is ah, that
is one of the things I want to encourage you
to do because you are exact you know, I know
there's a saying that you are the sum of the
five people that you're you are around.

Speaker 3 (06:07):
And I find that to be true.

Speaker 2 (06:09):
The more I try to get into spaces where, you know,
where I may be uncomfortable, is the more elevated I
feel because it forces me to grow. So, you know,
put yourself in spaces and I talk about this before,
put yourself in spaces where you are uncomfortable, where you're

(06:29):
forced to step outside of the norm, outside of your norm,
outside of your box that you created, outside of the
box that you know in the military. Another story that
I want to share is my recent speaking engagement in Paris,
Like I had a to speak internationally. You know, that

(06:51):
was amazing for me because so much of my identity
is tied to the military. I like, I talk about
this all the time. I got in at eighteen, you know,
and retired at forty, So my whole livelihood has been
in the military, married, had children, you know, graduated from

(07:12):
everything was in the military. So to be on the
international stage, it was it was really some. It was
an experience. So you know, to step confidently out there now,
was I nervous? Yes, But I embraced the discomfort and
that even helped me to discover new strengths and the

(07:35):
potential that I had within myself. It also reinforced the
idea that stepping out of our comfort zone, even though
it may be intimidating, is where you truly grow. One
of the most one of the most transformative teaching I've encountered,
and I was just listening to another individual that was
speaking about her this morning was from Abram Hicks, and

(07:59):
she taught about you know, joy being one of the
highest emotional state. Like the closer we get to joy,
the closer we are to our true selves Abram Hicks.
She also offers this emotional guidance scale which shows emotions
ranging from joy and appreciation at the top to fear

(08:23):
and despair at the bottom. And it's amazing. It's twenty two.
It's a list of twenty two different emotions and you know,
anger is even on there. But I think she said
anger is higher than jealousy.

Speaker 3 (08:40):
You have to check it out.

Speaker 2 (08:42):
It's Abram Hicks's emotional guidance Scale. So with that, I
want to just offer five ways that you can start
shifting your mindset and moving closer to joy and being
more of your authentic self. And one is to begin
your day with intention, focus in on what brings you

(09:03):
joy like, align your activities around being joyful and for
it's like just prioritize being joyful.

Speaker 3 (09:13):
The second one is.

Speaker 2 (09:15):
You know, checking regularly to understand where your emotions are.
You know, if you're feeling frustrating or frustrated or in doubt,
try to shift that emotion, your thoughts, you know, towards optimism,
optimism and gratitude to elevate where you are. It's funny

(09:35):
because I was talking to someone on the phone, and
when I first got on the phone, they were like,
what's wrong?

Speaker 3 (09:43):
And you know, in that moment, I was a little down.

Speaker 2 (09:49):
But then as they started talking, I I my, my, my.
I shifted my emotion. And it's just that simple, honestly,
to shift your emotion. Recognize that, Okay, I'm not in
a good space right now, and or I'm feeling a
little down, and find the thing that you can that
find that one thing that can take you out of that.

(10:12):
Tony Robbins talk about talk about shifting your your What
is it, he says, But it's about shifting your vibration,
you know, elevating It includes using physical activity, different things.
It could be music, you know, whatever it is, you
can get to get you out of that you know,
emotional state, maybe an unpleasant that doubt, that fear, that frustration.

(10:37):
The other thing I want to talk about is gratitude.
You know, this is something that it's really easy, but
sometimes because of our situation, may seem like you know,
it's just it's not something you think about doing so
and it and it's just about saying, you know, thank

(10:58):
you for waking me up this morning, thank you for
you know, a roof over my head.

Speaker 3 (11:03):
You know.

Speaker 2 (11:04):
Every day, just challenge yourself to list at least three
specific things that you are genuinely grateful for and allow
yourself to feel the joy that it brings. Because gratitude,
it just promotes so much more. It promotes like those fits,
it brings in a different it brings in positive experiences

(11:27):
to you. Just being gratifude, grat being gracious, being thankful.
The other thing this, this is one thing that I
am truly working on, is the power of visualization. Like
spend spending a few minutes each day to really visualize
my ideal future and make sure it's filled with joy

(11:51):
and fulfillment. Feel the joy as if it's happening, you know,
I think Joe dispensed to talk about mind movies or
maybe it's my value that I listened to. But visualizing
you know, where you want to be and visualizing yourself
in a in a in a great place, visualizing the
feelings that you want to.

Speaker 3 (12:12):
Have in that space.

Speaker 2 (12:13):
And I used to do this when I was in
high school, not really realizing what I was doing. And
it was about when I would run track, or swim
or even play soccer. I would see myself scoring a
goal if it was soccer, I would see myself winning
a race. But I didn't even understand what I was

(12:34):
doing until you know, late right now, I'm a little
bit more aware of, you know, my surroundings, of my
own feelings. But the visual visualistization is really a powerful
tool when you use it and then.

Speaker 3 (12:52):
Pivot your thoughts.

Speaker 2 (12:54):
You know, a lot of times I think I read
a statistic where most of our thoughts are like, we
think eighty five percent of the times we're thinking something bad,
which is really this when you think about that, that's
that's just that's really profound. But when negativity creeps in,
just learn to consciously pivot towards something positive, you know,

(13:18):
make make your change your thoughts change your your the
things that you're thinking about, and it could go back
to you being you know, practicing those gratitude thoughts.

Speaker 3 (13:30):
But so just so I can go over.

Speaker 2 (13:33):
Those five things again, it's prioritize joyful alignment, use the
emotional guidance they at Scale by Abram Hicks, practice gratitude,
visualize you know the place you want to be in,
and learn to pivot your thoughts.

Speaker 3 (13:49):
So I encourage you to choose one or two of
these you know.

Speaker 2 (13:58):
Practices and commit to them daily. The commitment committing to
this is a powerful step towards growing, you know, it's
towards calling.

Speaker 3 (14:08):
And the things that you want.

Speaker 2 (14:15):
Shifting our mindset from the military is it's challenging because
there are so many things that we are not prepared
for when we leave the service. You know, we're not
prepared for the mental and emotional and financial shifts. I
was talking to one of my friends, you know, and
we were talking about the difference between a veteran and

(14:37):
a retired veteran, and I think I try to explain
this to someone before. You know, Financially, it is challenging
for many veterans because not all of us retire from
the service, which if you're a veteran, you probably exited
the service and you may or may not be compensated,
while if you're retired, you're possibly still receiving a paycheck.

(15:02):
And you know, a lot of these things we're not
prepared for. We're not prepared for the feelings that we
have when we get out, those feelings of isolation, those
feelings of loneliness, and you know, I think sometimes I've
talked about how how I experience my own my own
challenges after the pandemic with you know, going through episodes

(15:28):
of hallucinations and things like that. We're not prepared for
all of that I was even talking about. You know,
the military does offer a transition assistance program, but many
times we don't get to really go through that program effectively.
And also it is a lot of information that's that's

(15:50):
given to us. So if you have a longer timeframe
to really take advantage of that, it's good. But if
you don't, the information can seem overwhelming. But I want
my encouragement to you today, and this is something that
I'm practicing daily, is just to really shift their mindset
because I do get challenged with, you know, thoughts of

(16:15):
like what is the word. It's imposters. I do get sometimes,
I do, you know, go through those phases where you.

Speaker 3 (16:25):
Know, I'm even that comparison thing.

Speaker 2 (16:29):
And but this is why I want to remind you
also that it's important to have support, you know, as
as a coach.

Speaker 3 (16:37):
I have a coach. When I was going.

Speaker 2 (16:39):
Through my military service, I went through a lot of
mental health treatment and I remember asking my therapist once,
you know, who do you talk to? And that's when
I learned that we all need support. We're not on
this journey alone. We just have to be willing to
be vulnerable. We have to be willing to share, we

(16:59):
have to be willing to open up, and we have
to be willing to, you know, embrace being the possibilities
that are there. It's scary, it is, especially if like
all your life, you've been in one job like myself,
you know, it's it's scary to shift from that. It's
scary to come outside of all of that comfort. But

(17:23):
in the mindset, shift is pivotal if you're really trying
to be more, you know, become more to elevate. I
talked about the identity piece for me being a coach,
for me being a big one. All the things that
I want to become, a speaker, a coach, and mentor.

(17:47):
It's it's stepping into that. It's becoming who you want
to be. And it takes work. It takes My coach
talks about affirmations and not just affirmation, but it's actually
making action to become the person you want to be.

Speaker 3 (18:04):
But so.

Speaker 2 (18:08):
I hope this information was helpful. I hope that this
really touched someone today, because mindset is really really important
in moving forward, especially with the uncertainty of the of
the of our climate today, you know, especially for veterans.
There's so much, so much going on, you know, and

(18:29):
it's not just for veterans, just for the world in general,
and we have to really be able to tap into
these emotions, these higher vibrations, higher emotions to see ourselves,
you know, if you believe in God.

Speaker 3 (18:45):
I do.

Speaker 2 (18:45):
That's one of the things that gets me through as well,
you know, just really focusing on the positive. I know
it sounds like, you know, one of those things we
say every day, just just be positive, just focus on
the positive things, But it is really taking the time
to do that, taking the time to go outside to
be with nature, to take to taking the time to

(19:08):
really sit, sit with yourself and.

Speaker 3 (19:13):
Reflect.

Speaker 2 (19:14):
You know, I think sometimes we're so so much on
the go that we don't take time to slow down
to rest. And it's not necessarily about just laying down.
It's just really maybe you take a day off and
just do nothing, you know, and nothing could be you just.

Speaker 3 (19:33):
Nothing could be not work.

Speaker 2 (19:35):
Don't do anything that requires you to just be anxious
to be you know, just do things that it requires
that will bring you back to center. So, as we
wrap up today, remember that your journey from my military
individuals and females, Remember that your journey beyond the uniform.
