Slaughter's my name, Luke Slaughter.Cavl's my business. It's a tough business,
it's big business. I've got abig stake in it. There's no
man west of the Rio Grand bigenough to take it from me. Luke

(00:32):
Slaughter of Tombstone. Luke Slaughter ofTombstone, Civil War cavalryman's turned Arizona cattleman
across the territory from Yuma to FortDefiance, from Flagstaff to the Wachucas,

(00:56):
and below the border through Chihuahua andSonora. His name was respected or fear,
depending on which side of the lawyou were on. Man of vision,
man of legend. Luke Slaughter ofTombstone. I came from Texas to

(01:22):
the Arizona Territory with two thousand headof scrawny longhorns, but the good grass
in the valley of the San Pedrofattened him up like butter. And when
I got a contract to deliver athousand head to the Indian Agency at San
Carlos, I signed with a clearconscience. When you sell beef to the
government, they want good beef. They always seemed to want it. Yesterday.

(01:46):
Hey, which it out? Whereare the stairs from the southeast section.
Warn and Jose went for em.You, Frankie, don't run them.
Critters ain't got to be delivered. What legs on? Well, they
won't lose much wait on the trailto Saint Carlos. No, a lot
of grass on the route. Yourpicture. Have to hustle them to make

(02:06):
it six days old, Luke,Yeah, we shall can't let him do
any sights in plus had the nextbatch, Frankie, Yeah, I wish
we had a few more hands.Fifteen hundred longhorns is a big pastle for
six men and a cook. Athousand head wichita. That's what the contract
calls for. If we delivered twoare of over three we start out with,
we're doing Martin fifty. Oh whatare you talking about? If I

(02:29):
lost one out of ten on asimple six day trail in perfect spring weather,
I wouldn't dare call myself a cattleman. You've been operating in Texas where
there ain't no mountains, no rivers, no engines, no rustlers, and
no legal acting robbers who charge youin cattle if you're set forth on their

(02:50):
greysland. There ain't no problems inTexas. Matter fact, ain't nothing in
Texas. I knew I had somereason for comad Arizona. I'm still not
losing one for three or when it'sthis? Which the names? Which at
all? And where's them? Critters? You and Jose were supposed to cut
and bring in that come with Jose? Oh why didn't you help him?

(03:13):
One? We're in a hurry. It don't take us long. Only fifty
little cattle. I told you thatcut a hundred your loaf and scallawagg there
were not a hundred left. Ithink maybe the minas visit the southeast six
and last night, Luke, I'vebeen telling you it was Ramiers picking away
at our herd. This time he'sreally hit us. And if you're asking

(03:34):
me, you'd better get out ofparty and go out for him. Now.
There isn't time. Which if wedon't hit the trail today, we
can't live up to the contract.Yeah, and now we ain't got moren
about thirteen hundred head fit for thetrail. And if you ain't to deliver
a thousand, you better take himall all right, which you know Arizona
better than I do. But I'llbet we come back with at least three

(03:55):
hundred steers with my brand on him. I bet you six months pay.
We do is a streak is aWe're gonna start him soon. Six months
pay. That's what I'll beat you, all right, I'll give you a
real bet, six months of yowages against blue streak. Here now,
Luke, if you got to losethe best horse in your string to learn

(04:15):
your toful lesson, I'm willing toteach you so her so good, Luke,
ride which town We'll make a goodtwenty miles again. Today herd looked

(04:41):
so much more than I did whenwe started yesterday. Anything happened while you
would rideing night watching, nothing muchexcept now I know Ramirez is in the
neighborhood. Why didn't you waken theboys and morever him? They need their
sleep. It better deliver these cactusboomers on schedule. But you can't let
that even Mexican keep cutting in onyour herd. Light this right now,

(05:01):
I have to which done well.If you were to ash me, I
didn't. Let's keep these credits moving. Yeah, hell on, he got

(05:25):
the coffee boiling their cookie. Surehad mister Schlorder fix your breakfast and two
jerks. If you're ready, waituntil the sun and the men get up.
But you've been riding watched since midnightfor three nights. I'm a little
tired at that. You know, this is a good night horse, but
he's no blue streak. The streak. I can catch a few winks in
the saddle and leave the watching upto him. Oh, you shouldn't have

(05:47):
betting him against what chatas pay.We ain't going to get back home with
no three hundred head. We'll seethis pony is learning. We got visitors
out there. Oh we were likegrabbed me. I'm much tanging a gun,
mister Slaughter. I'll let you knowif I need any help. Let's
go by. You're looking for something, gentlemen, who's outfits? This belongs

(06:15):
to Luke Slaughter from down below Tombstone. You boys over here, not me,
No me, neither yous trail boss. That's right, we watched you
bed the outfit down from a masa. I'd say you got something over a
thousand head. Yeah, that's right. We're delivering a thousand to San Carlos

(06:35):
government business. Don't pay, it'stoo fussy. Good good luck to you
anyhow. Thanks. Oh, bythe way, you're crossing private grays.
This is part of Wendell Miller spreadour maps, don't say so. Map
makers can't keep up with things thesedays. I don't blame you for taking

(06:57):
the short trail to San Carlos, only you understand it'll cost you a hundred
head. Well, if this isMiller's land and that's his crossing fee,
have your boys cut him out.I haven't got the time or the men
to argue last those logs, tightboys, they come loose in midstream,

(07:23):
we lose our chuck wagon. Itlooks like you'll float, all right,
mister slaughter. It's a good trick. We get the wagon across loop.
But Texas trick. We did haveone little river back there. But if
we drive down stream eleven twelve milesor critters can fort and we'd lose a
day. Curran's running too strong here. I am lazy. Longhorns will let

(07:44):
themselves wash down river and we'll losetwo days. Round them up again.
Blues trick will make them swim onereggae. You both got your top horses.
Good, follow striking me and tryto do what we do. The
rest of you head the stairs intothe river. Keep you coming to set.
We're gonna lose half of what's leftcookie ones That stubborn Luke gets something

(08:15):
into his head. Hey, lookat that gray horse swim at them stairs.
Why he's he's a hazing him likehe was on dry land. He's
running the other horses how to doit? Which it had? They got
them brainless long horns swimming across ina straight line. Maybe they do no
thing or two in Texas. Istill don't see how you done it,

(08:45):
Luke. We didn't lose worn tanhead in the river. Blue Streak knows
more about cattle than most waddies.Real thoughtful of you to rest him tonight.
You can turn them over to menice and fresh. Which it's how
you really think you're gonna win thatbed? Oh, I know it.
If we got eleven hundred heads atthis point, I'll eat them. No,

(09:07):
don't eat them. They're sold, and we'll make San Carlos by mid
afternoon tomorrow, and i'll have mea big girl a horse. Maybe what'd
you stopping for the show? Prtual? These stars millions of the pretty,
aren't they? Yeah? And mightyhelpful when you're lost tonight, I wasn't

(09:31):
thinking about that. I was justthinking about about nature. For instance,
that old owl and that coyote mighteven be talking to each other. Yeah,

(09:52):
and they might be talking apache language. I think so, sure do.
And we're going to lose another parcelof cat if we don't ride out
there and stop them and get scalpedin the middle of the night. We'll
collect from them on the way backin daylight. Well, my account was

(10:18):
one thousand head plus nineteen. Wewith the yoursmate, Slaughter, I had
it plus fifteen. Should I havethe extras to the amount of the treasury
draft or you're driving them back,I'll throw him in free. Save the
government a little money. Give yourIndians a little extra beef. His engines
got a little extra beef. Theysnuck about fifty head ride out from under
our noses last night. I doubtif they were reservation Indians. There's a

(10:41):
renegade band somewhere south in the ViperHills. They have at the cavalry from
Fort Thomas. Will dig them outfor long. I'll get the draft ready
for you, mister Slaughter. It'sfine, sir, Well, Luke,
you've done a better job than Ithought you would. Dad, I'll let
you ride Blue Streak part way.I'll ride him all the way Wichita.

(11:03):
We may be starting home without aherd, but our bet pays off on
how many we're driving when we getthere. In a moment, Luke Slaughter

(11:24):
of Tombstone returns. Never mind debate, simply join us on CBS Radio later
on today when yours truly Johnny Dollerwaits with bated breath for the return of
a missing fisherman. It's another excitinginsurance fraud case for Johnny dissolve and another
thrilling mystery for you. Join uson most of these same stations today as

(11:46):
the plot thickens for CBS Radios JohnnyDoller and now Act two of William and
Robson's production of Luke Slaughter of Tombstone. We'd made our drive to San Carlos

(12:20):
in six days and then expected toget home in three. I had some
unfinished business to take care of.Look down in the base and their boys
about fifty longhorns and six apache herdsmanbound br critters. The four of us,
we're gonna tackle the six of them. If we did, we'd have

(12:41):
at least twenty more braves pouring downfrom those WICKI ups on the far side.
Give me your guns, Wichita.Thanks. Now one and I are
going to circle behind the camp todraw those apaches away from the cattle.
When we do, you and Frankiehigh tailored inn and drive them east as
fast as they'll go. Now wecome a fur piece to pick up fifty

(13:03):
measly long horns east. We're atombstone southwest of here. But like you
saying, we've come a fur piece. When I get those stairs back,
I am to keep them that oldfour pistols loaded. One see the circle

(13:28):
and keep firing. And when theapaches come after us, well we've got
better horses. Let's go. Luke'smade a bad mistake. Frankie. We
run the cattle east till are readyto drop a word. We wind up.

(13:54):
I don't know. It ain't pleasantcountries. I'll tell you that the
Tinine country that's where tears. Whyit could be an apache behind ever molder
a loose guard our six guns andthen there's one. Now, mister Bagbee,
well well you ain't apachee. No. Captain Mark Cott, attached to

(14:15):
the cavalry at Fort Thomas, misterSlawter, suggested that you might enjoy the
company of some of my men asfar as the fort. I enjoy it.
Your chuck Wagon and Ramooda are therealready, and mister Slawter says he'll
join you as soon as he heardsthose renegade Indians back to the reservation.

(14:43):
The next order of business was thecattle baron Wendell Miller be Those men had
charged me a crossing for you ofa hundred head. He wasn't the kind
you call out the United States Cavalryfor I went to his spread alone under
the name of Link slater him.I wanted to get started in the cattle
business. I flattered him until hewas treating me like a long lost nephew.

(15:07):
Now there's a I haven't mind foryou, Link even hundred head crime,
long hauns Well, I don't knowthat I'm much of a judge yet,
but now they looked fine to me. My foreman picked him up.
The drover was gone through last week, little short of cash, I guess,
and fought got him for ten dollars. Ahead. You get him for
what I paid for him. You'vegot to build a sale. I suppose

(15:31):
that's right, young fellow. Inthe cattle business, we don't take anybody's
word. Well, no, Ididn't want it all right, that's all
right. You're a promising young man, and i'd like to see you make
a real go by that little placeyou told me about. Try to build
it up to a spread like thisone. I don't know that I can
ever do that. You can,if you're willing to take some advice,

(15:52):
I'd be grateful for it, allright, Link, this is a tough
new country. Man's got to makehis own laws. He's got to keep
his eyes and ears open and takewhat he wants. Prove you can do
that. You'll be all right. That's just what I'm gonna prove. Now.
How about that bell of sale?Of course, my boy, the
receipt for hundred head a ten dollarsahead, signed by a fellow named Luke

(16:18):
Slaughter or something like that. Isee the steers all seem to have a
lazy S brand, Mister Millern,Can I tell you something about keeping your
eyes and ears open? Now?Don't tell me that one of these credits
here is missing, honor that hebellows off key, look at the brand

(16:38):
on my horse and listen while Isay, Luke Slaughter and Link Slater,
what you heard me? And Isuppose you show me a map of your
spread, and I'll show you thatthese steers were taken off a trail five
miles west of your farthest boundary appearSlater laughter. And I don't like having

(17:00):
the name forged our foreman brought intocattle and the receipt. I'm not going
to court argue about it, likeyou advised me. I'm making my own
laws and I'm taking those steers forexactly what you paid for him. Nothing.

(17:26):
Finally, there was the business thatstarted long before the drive, the
business of Ramirez well last camp, before we hit the whole range again.
Maybe what do you mean? MaybeSendor slaughter. We'd drive it easy tomorrow
with so few cattles my college,Luke, if you could have picked up

(17:47):
one hundred and fifty more of ownbranch mrs, you would have won our
bet better, no bet. Everybody'sworked hard, and tomorrow we ought to
have some fun. Who wants togo hunting? Ah for? You just
want to put off hand and bluestreak over to me? I ain't a
gone. Me and Jose we werethe best hunters and also Anora bears,

(18:08):
DearS, pumas, eagles are patches. We hunt anything. Jose and Me
good and you're just the men Ineed for tomorrow. What we hunt for
Ramirez? Amis sure we know he'soperating around here. I think maybe not
Ramirez has moved. I bet heain't moved, for that's right. With

(18:32):
a couple of great hunters like oneand Jose, we shouldn't have any trouble
finding him. But Ramirez has manymen, we don't have so many.
I've heard that Ramrez will accept aman for men challenge. All we have
to do is get word to himsomehow that you and Jose and I want
to meet him and his two bestmen, Senor Slaughter. I would like

(18:55):
to do this, but I justremember my mother. She was very sick.
When I leave, I better gosee her. No bronto, I'm
sorry to hear that one. It'llhave to be Jose and me against Ramirez.
What about me? You said youwouldn't go hunting, Senor Slaughtered.
Oh, says little brother. Hiswife is going to have a baby,

(19:17):
so he'd better go to m two. You give us our pay, of
course, boys, it's yours,Jose, thirty gold for you one,
Frankie. These boys want their poniesout of the remoter. Jose and me,

(19:37):
we would stay if you needed usfor the cattle's book. I understand.
I hope you find your families inthe best of health. You see,
oh one, If you happen torun across Ramires, tell him I'll
be right plumb in the middle ofRio Verdi Meadow at noon tomorrow, all
alone on big gray horse. Ican't bear to watch it happened to you,

(20:12):
Luke, and go on back andwait with the herd in the check
wagon. Maybe Ramires didn't get yourmessage. Don't worry about that. He
got it, Juan thought of that. Oh oh well, which you can
either go back or wait here onthe rim riding into that basin alone,

(20:36):
Luke, ain't you Ain't you neverheard how Ramires fights? Sure, look,
I'm charging down with a big shotgunblazon and carry you the bitch before
he's in your pistol range. Youknow which it ta. The United States
Armies always testing you weapons. Boysat Fort Thomas wanted me to try out
this rifle that's skinny too for ashoot, But he's quite sure, so

(21:03):
I'm gonna aim and let Ramirez firefirst. If this rifle is no good,
I guess you'll have to take theherd in yourself. I'm as ready
as i'll ever be. Streak.I hope it doesn't keep us waiting too

(21:27):
long. A right on the dot. He's way short, this rifle better
than not be. How about himgo streak. Your first shot should break

(21:57):
my hand, Signori, you nekeshot, you break my arm? Your
neck shot? She miss, Iguess I haven't got the hang of this
rifle yet. Your pistol, she'sstill loaded. No, if I let
you go, would you take yourmen across the border and stay there?

(22:18):
I guess so. She's pretty niceand so order all right. But if
I ever hear of you setting footon United States soil again, I'm coming
after you, and you'll never goback alive. A man does not seize
a branding iron twice by the hotend, Senor. And there's one more

(22:40):
thing, ramirors a matter of severalhundred cattle with the lazy S brand.
I aim to have them back beforeyou leave. Three sixties six sixty seven,

(23:03):
three sixty eight. That would youmake a witch of town. I
quit Counten at three hund oh my, no more wages coming for six months,
and I ain't got enough cash evenbuy me a pint of tarns were
varnish. Well, you wouldn't haveexcept that you lost that bet before you

(23:25):
pay a double? What come onup, let's get those cattle to grass,
yeah, Luke. Slaughter of Tombstone, starring Sam Buffington, was written

(23:48):
