Little Poe works very yes, colddown killed my mother my father too.

(08:07):
My father was very sweet and kind. He played the according and sang,
and he used to say to mewhen he had a hangover, which was
most of the time. Go awaitsomeplace I'll go and sing and dance and
act and be happy. So youfollowed his advice, except I'm nobody,
but I'll be ready when my chancecomes. I think they've bee in Hollywood.

(08:28):
Not so fast, baby, whatyou needed a couple of years in
the start. We've got a lotto learn. If I haven't time for
all that, Bill, I wantto get there quickly. And when I
am a big starme the interviewers askme, how did this great success come
to you? All? Got chesscogner, I'll tell them it came from Bill
Dunnaghan, who once said, givesthe kid a breaker. Well, I

(08:48):

look look up there. Other stars. Yes, you'll see over there where
the tree shaped class is. Nowjust do the right of it, see
the right one. Yeah, it'smine my star. My father told me
that star appeared for the first timethe night I was born. Who could

(09:54):
be? It's every night to remindyou of where I'm going, very silly.
I won't see you again for along time. Maybe will you accept
a Christmas present from a strange lady? My stuff there? I gave you
half? Yes, because has thisfor you? Why didn't I say something

(10:22):
to you him? But no,not a word, not even where can
I write you? Where will yoube? Oh? No, old clamb
out just walking along with his heartjumping and never a wound. And now
I'm in nicolas Funo parlor and youin a box in the corner of the
room. But it can't end likethis, baby, It can't end with
Dunnig and the dummy just staring ata box. Indeed, that didn't take

(10:43):
long, did it. Me andfather Spince, he got everything worked out
fine, and I got hold ofa singer too. Now let's see,
I figured a blanket of roses witha coffin and maybe a nice three.
It's a sort of personal tribute fromyou. Oh yeah, and the section
of the church almost forgot that.Oh that's bad. You wouldn't want to
forget any charges. Huh. Anddonation of Father Spinsky's church. Let's figure

(11:07):
out a total of three hundred andfifty bucks. Three fifty Well, that's
a lot more of that. Thatain't much for the service at Saint Leo's.
Saint Leo, Sir, biggest churchin town. But that's the wrong
church. I wanted Saint Michael's.I just took for granted. That's all
broken down. Burn. Oh no, you don't want your friend buried from
Saint Michael. Look, mister orlofwhere is Saint Michael's. Go on,

(11:30):
take a look at it. Iain't worried down the street till your left
across from the hotel. Just remember, Father Paul, ain't got anything to
offer. You'll be back. Sothat's why I'm here, Father Paul.

(11:50):
She wanted to be buried from yourchurch. Now, how much do you
charge? I better tell you first. She wanted a few extras. I'm
very proud that this guy wanted tobe buried from Saint Michael's. Mister Dunnigan,
please put your money away. ButI'm sorry, father, I came
in here like a sorehead. It'sjust that, well, it's a pleasure

(12:11):
to run into a human being again. You ever hear of poverty, father?
Oh? Yeah, poverty is anold friend of Saint Michael. Well,
I'm down to my last three hundreddollars. I just thought i'd better
warn you, and I've got afavorite to ask. Could we have her
brought here. I hate the thoughtof Allga being left in all Off's place.
Of course he belongs here. She'lllike that. I mean, she

(12:33):
would have liked that. I keeptalking about her as if she were still
alive. Well, it's just Imean, I know what you mean.
Let me phone orl Off, andthen you must tell me about Augur.
I can see you must have lovedher very much. Nick Arloff's a stupid

(12:54):
and greedy man, But she'll behere, thank your father. Now about
about Augur, Well, i'd mether only twice before I took a job
in Hollywood. His personal drum beatfor the great Marcus Harris. Marcus Harris,
Marcus Harris is one of the greatestmotion picture producers in America. At
the moment, he was giving givenbirth to a three million dollar epic called

(13:16):
Joan of Arc. The start ofthe picture was a girl named Anna Clovener,
but Miss Claudner proved quite a problem. She was troubled from the minute
she walked into the studio. Thenone morning in Paris is off, I
you superport. I will not putmy foot on that set again, leaving
mister Harris miss clove him. He'sa director, He's an idiot. He

(13:37):
wants me to be here before I'mawake, he says, I must he
hears. I have played Joan inEurope chege Joe Shiller's Joan. What have
I to learn from him? Fromany of you? Come on and I
don't act like this. You're agreat artist, then I want to be
treated like a great artist. Andlet's go to your dressing room. Let's
see if we can't talk this over. So now you give Georgia too.

(14:01):
What do you know about art?A bush? God said les, What
you bless and what you still are? No ignorance hasn't can be border us
to Anna club. Now wait aminute, we don't talk like that in
America. No, all you talkingAmerica is money money mine. Oh time,
I'm silly. Fight quick, youcan quit eye. I'm sorry you

(14:22):
don't like me, miss crude. Now that's all right. I'm sorry you
don't like America. But that isn'tall right. It's too bad you couldn't
see something nice in such a wonderfulplace. Wonderful for fools, maybe for
mary grads, for gravers. Iam anatist. You're come, Marcus,
she'll be back. I don't wanther back. I like this country.

(14:46):
I won't work with anyone who doesn'tlike it. Well, you can get
somebody else to play the partner, and there's no one else available who can
play you on the arch. It'stoo bad clone has a Greek talent.
Well, let's walk over to thesett and give them the bad news.
And that's it, ladies and gentlemen, we are forced to give up the
picture. I'm sorry this has happened. Maybe we'll have better luck next time.

(15:09):
That's it, boys, wrap itup, real deal? Holy,
I am I dreaming? Hello deal? Oh don't tell me you're in picture
I was I just lost my job. I was standing for an o'clock.
Now you're working here too. Yeah. Look, let's get out of here
where we can talk. So astand there, huh. Not much of

(15:33):
a job for a foolish young ladywho dreamed of being a star. You
know what, It makes me happyjust to look at you. Say where
can I meet you that night?Let me Christina for you. I've got
a sort of apartment and I've beendying to have a guest. No,
guess, no, I'm glad. What's the address? Fourteen sixty one Curson
Avenue. It's over the garage.Fourteen sixty one will be hard if I

(15:54):
get there about seven o'clock. Seventyis fine? Oh they'll how good to
see you again? My coffee deal? Oh no thanks. Just tell me
the rest of it, baby,Oh, there isn't any rest of it.

(16:14):
I kept making the rounds of thestudios, and sometimes they said come
back, and sometimes they said dohope come back. But whatever they said,
it always ended the same way. Now, a job for a new
young movie star. Bill, you'renot listening. Yeah, I'm listening,
baby, I'm listening to a lotof things. Auga can you act?
But you know I can act?How do I know? Because I told

(16:34):
you? Oh that's right, Soyou did, and I'm much better now.
I spend all my spare time readingplace, learning parts. And yeah,
you're better looking than she is too. You're younger, you're pretty.
Bill. Are you talking easy?Baby? I'm incubating, will you?
You don't mean Joan of Barr, never mind? I mean auga. Do
you know any scenes from the script? Well, Bill, I I know

(16:56):
the whole script. I don't wantthe whole script. I want one scene,
one big scene. No, yes, Now, we've got to work
fast. It's one of those things. Yes, Bill, Okay, you're
right. The camera's growing action. It's a scene where John comes into the
court room. They brought her upfrom the dungeon. She sees all the
great English Christocrats, all the greatdoctors of theology. They're here to make

(17:22):
her confess that she has lied andbless seemed. Then the bishop asked her
if she considers herself in a stateof grace, and she replies, if
I am not, I hope Godwill you put me there? And if
I am, I hope he'll keepme there. They want the truth.

(17:42):
They tell her and they ask whendid Satan first command you to slay the
English? And Joan answers the processof my saints commanded me to fight for
France. So I went into battlesand I led the battles. And what
were the English doing on the soulof why didn't they keep their blood at
home where friend thoughts could not spillit? No, So whatever you do

(18:07):
to me, I will not saywhat is not the truth. And the
truth is I'm a person girl, and I love my mother and father and
my brothers, and I would havestayed at home. God spoke to me.
So he's angel Michael, and hetold me to go out into the
world and help my people. Iwent and I fought, And if I

(18:33):
should escape from here, I willcontinue to fight for them. And if
I do not escape, and youwill burn me for what I've done,
I will kneel in the fire andgive God my thanks for his kindness to
me and my people. Okay, okay, baby, where where is the

(18:56):
fort? What was it all right? Yeah? Yeah, yeah, it
was all right. Hello, misterHarris pleased, it's Bill Dunagan calling.
Yeah, will you please? Idon't know, Tello, Marcus. This
Bill Dunagan, Marcus, hang onto your hat by all right, all
right, hang on to your pajamas. Then, Marcus, you don't have
to shelve the picture. I foundanother anacloth and a plus. She's young,

(19:18):
he's beautiful, she's can't she act? Can hype? It's biddle can
Joel, Louis Pike and Bob gota pitch. I'm telling you, Marcus,
she's great. You've got to giveher a screen test first thing in
the morning. Just give me you'reokay, and I'll set everything up.
Yeah. Sure, sure, I'vegot to tie it up. I give
you my follow what a bonny?Yeah fine, I'll see them on.
Relax, baby, I'm going toexplode. You're going to bed. It's

(19:41):
like the time you came into thetheater. I couldn't see it first,
just a voice that said, givethe kid a break. I don't know
why I deserve anybody like you.Yeah, I've got to get hold of
Dolan and talk him into drinking thetest. We don't want a shot by
some stooge. I won't see himnow, and you're going to get some
sweep. How can I ever repayyou, Bill by knocking him dead?
Baby. Tomorrow's the big days, biggest Now, poor Pills, good night,

(20:04):
good night. I don't worry aboutanything. I'll see you on the
barricades at dawn, Babby. Inthe moments, we'll continue with that two
of the Miracle of the Bells.Meanwhile, greetings to Libby Collins, our

(20:26):
Hollywood reporter, fresh from the GreenGrass of Wyoming. Mister Keilly, you
mean, of course the picture ofthat name, Libby mm hm. Twentieth
century Fox is New Western and wasn'tI surprised to see little Peggy Cummings in
the role of a hard riding outdoorgirl. She's so dainty and feminine.
Green Grass of Wyoming is certainly fullof action. Those harness races had me
on the edge of my chair, especially the one with Charles Colburn at the

(20:48):
Ring. You can always count onCharles to give a rare performance. And
I think the studio has a fineand young Bob Arthur. Oh, he's
most appealing. It's Piggy Commings, sweethearts. I understand. Peggy made a
great hit when the company was onlocation. She was entertained by the governor
and interceded by all the papers. She's very lovely with her blonde hair and
fresh fair skin. How about thatJohn Kennedy. Yeah, she's one of

(21:11):
the Hollywood's purtious and now wonder everyonefell in love with her. Besides lebby
lux girls always make a hit.Yes, Beggy Cummins is an ardent Lucks
girl. She told me that duringthe war days in England she used to
cherish every sliver of Luck soap. Those Luck Soap facials are wonderful for the
skin, she said, I didn'twant to neglect my complexion care a single
day. Screen stars just can't takechances with complexion guilty, and neither should

(21:36):
any woman. Luck's facials are soeasy and quick and they really work.
Test by skin specialists prove it.In actually three out of four cases,
skin became lovelier in a short time. Lock Soap agrees with delicate skin.
It's as fine as soap as moneycan buy. Fastidious women love the Luck
Soap perfume too. It's such adelicate fragrance. Another reason why fragrant white

(21:59):
lucks so oile. It's help isHollywood's own beauty solp. Back now to
mister William Keeley, tout the miracleof the Bell starring Fred McMurray as Bill
Dunnighan Vallet as Alga and Frank Sinatraas Father Paul in the shabby old Rectorday

(22:26):
of Saint Michael's Church. The mildlittle Priest, Father Paul listens attentively as
Bill Dunnigan's press agent continues the storyof Alga Trascovna. Well, father,
the screen test was great. Algawas wonderful, and when we started shooting
she was even better. Everyone wasraving about her, nor gags either real
raves. I tell you, father, you've never seen a dream come true

(22:48):
like this one. It sounds wonderful. Well that should be. Mister Parla
callaen. Where do you want topark? Which you carried into the please?
I got it on credit for yes, yes, you may keep the
lumber of mister Roloff. That don'tpay me. There's a next to charge
five bucks here five bucks now beatit. You'll gott to hear from Father

(23:11):
Spinsky. That's up. I'm alwayshappy to hear from Father Spinsky. Mister
Donnegan, it's time for evening devotionswith you. Care to come with me
in church or I don't know fatherhim, or please come and see her
there, well for a minute, and you haven't finished telling me about it.
Tomorrow maybe good, And if you'dlike, I'll show you the cemetery

(23:34):
this way, mister Dnneghan. Youknow some people object to our cemetery being
way up here in the hills, mister Dunnaghan. But at least this is
one place where the cold dust doesn'tlow, and where the flowers are always
clean. I asked a friend ifshe had ever heard of Algoson Scrodn of

(24:00):
the movie actors. She said shehadn't. I told her she was very
famous. No, father, theywouldn't let her become famous, But why
not? What happened? Well, after two weeks of shooting, Marcus Harris
trippled her salary. That's how goodshe was. But she never changed.
There's quite a thing, you know, father, to jump from nowhere in
the stardom. And all the timeshe was getting thinner and more tired.

(24:22):
I figured she was just working toohard. Until one day in her dressing
room, Oh what a day.I've never worked so hard in all my
life. Though it's a regular slavedriver, but I love him for it.
Oh, I feel a light asthere. Clara, does she have
a fever? She's awfully hot, mister Danagan, or it would be true

(24:45):
under those lights all day. Let'shave a wonderful party been when the picture's
over. Yeah, yeah, we'lldo that, baby, Poor serious vill
he doesn't know how gay life canbe. How what what miss? Please?
Medicin Jens? What the medicine isat? Are just something doctor Jennings

(25:07):
gave me, Doctor Jennings, I'vebeen using my voice so much lately,
all those long speeches. But justthink, Bill, only three more days
and the picture will be finished.Yeah, well, I got to go
and see Harry said, be careful, babe, you you look so tired.
You've frightened me. She doesn't knowwh I've come here, Doctor Jennings.

(25:36):
Tell me how sick is she?She is very sick. She's developed
tuberculosis. Tuberculosis, I see.She needs what we called surgical arrests.
Should have had it long ago,if we could send her to a sanatorium.
I've tried desperately to persuade her,but she's a termined to finish this
picture. Eventh it kills her.I know, I know, but she

(25:59):
will get one. There's always achance, no more than that. Thanks
for telling me, doctor and inspite of her illness. Mister Dunegan,
she finished the picture. Yes,father Paul, she finished it. I

(26:21):
was in an addressing room just beforethey shot the final scene. I did
my best to persuade her to postPAULA just one more shot beer, then
it's finished, for you're not well. I talked to Marcus. He said,
we can shoot it tomorrow, thenext day or next week. Please
is so important to me. Please, We're ready, Mistress Goldner colle colloge

(26:41):
Bill, I want you to bethere. Sure, sure, yes.
This was the last shot for thePaul with aug that Joan changed to the
steak, the fire leaping up aroundher, and the mob booting and jeering
until Jones for the Last World.Ow you quite here. I pardon you

(27:08):
for what you do. I'm youngand I do not know much of life.
But I know that this little placein which I stand is not the
world. There are places I've neverseen where men and women are full of
sweetness and hope. I speak tothem out of the pain that comes.

(27:33):
Dreamer, dreamer of God and goodness, believe in truth and justice, for
the world is yours. I willnot die. I will not die.
When the fire burns me. Mysoul will remain to seek the glory of

(27:53):
God. I will remain as alight, a light all those the dark
Jesus. A few hours later,at Harris's office, I've decided not to

(28:15):
release the picture. Gentlemen, sometimemaybe we can remake it when we can
find the proper person play the partygame. Marcus, you can't do that.
I'm not going to release it.That you were a dead girl in
it, and that's final. ButAlga died to make it. She gave
up her wife to act in it. Where's your heart, Marcus? Do
it for her? I'm sorry, but I can't. If all had been
a girl in the public at Nomeand loved, I might be willing to

(28:37):
take a chance. But this waywe gambled and lost. That's all,
gentlemen. Well, I'm sorry. She was a fine girl. I'm going
to take her own, Marcus backto Pennsylvania. That's what she wanted.
I won't be coming back. You'llbe back. It's tough, but it

(29:00):
will pass. Everything does I don'tthink so. It can't end like this,
not for her. Those bells, father church bells, Yes, they
ring every day at noon all overthe world. Yes, I never listened

(29:22):
bells. I knew there was somethingi'd forgotten. All go wanted your bells
rung at their funeral. I almostforgot her last request. I'll tell the
thanks to father. How many churchesare there in cold Town? Why we
have five churches? Do they allhave bells? Well? Yes, fine
bells, mister Dunnaghan, you're notthinking. I'm thinking of a lot of
things. Five churches, Okay.I want all the bells to start ringing

all the other poor said people ofCold Town. You better not talk,

Why I kept on until this happened. It's because all those poor people,
the people I came from, havehopes and dreams that never get a chance.

(34:44):
They just work and die, andall the nice things inside of them

okay, you'll tell them. I'llbe right down. And I don't think
you realize, mister Dunagan, whata stereral this is created. Oh I
think I have an idea, FatherSpenscy, why they tell me? The
entire nation has heard about the billsand newspapers radio anyway, as far as

(36:30):
cold is concerned, it seems everyonewants to attend services from miss Truskovnor.
And that's fine, father, Andit's o the Saint Michael's Church couldn't possibly
accommodate them all the well or themorning, Father Paul, Well, the
most unusual thing has happened. Imean, just a little while ago,
over one hundred people they came toview the coffin, and they stayed for
mass, all of them in mychurch exactly, Father Paul. I was

(36:52):
just telling mister Dunaghan, your littlechurch will be batly over text and the
sighteeas are flooding the town already.Mister Dunaghan, I'm sure you will.
It would be far wise to moveall of Traskovna to Saint Leo's Church and
let us conduct the service. Perhapsit would be better bill No, Father
Paul augu is going to be buriedfrom Saint Michael's. I had hope not

(37:13):
to be falsty to this position, mister Dunagan. I came here to be
of service, however, and misterAlmost's suggestion, I were John Bank regarding
the chick you gave me for ringingthe bills of Saint Leo's. They tell
me that check is worthless. Well, if you will just give me a
little time, it will be covered. I shall phone your bank at noon.
If the money is not in youraccount, our bells will stop ringing
and I shall inform my fellow pastorsof your syndol the day mister Danagan.

(37:38):
Well, noon, he said threehours. You know bells Saint Leos is
a very fine church, and FatherSpinsky is really a very good man.
Me run out and Saint Michael's nofather, father? How much is the
fair of manacook? Right? Tencents? Well? Daughter, color out
of covert then, huh, butI don't understand that. Look, father,

(37:58):
don't make it too difficult. Well, I'm putting the fight on you
for a buck. Oh oh ofcourse, yeah, thanks. Oh will
that be in a well, notquite. I need about four thousand more,
but I may be able to pickit up. Nneco. I'll see
you later. Yeah, she's comingin now, said Donegan. Yep,

(38:20):
yep, it's in Hollywood. Orwhat's you say? What does you say?
Uh? Have stamps five thousand dollarsas requested? Catch you down?
Didn't he? I expected it?What else to say? Uh? Money
is settlement in pull for your unexpiredcontract. Never mind about saving pictures.
My decisions still stands signed Harris.Oh thanks, or if there should be

(38:40):
any other wires, you can callme at the Coldtown Hotel. Yes,
sir, going there now, areright from the bank. I've got a
little session coming up with some newspaperreporters. Yeah, so Harris can't telling
the money. Huh Yeah, buthe's still not sold on releasing the picture.
I need something, big, boys. I've got to get him boiling
over. If we only get somenew angle and your papers. The bells
are still ringing. No, butthat's no longer news breaks. We've got

(39:04):
to cook up some fresh headlines.Voice, you can all come down of
what's the matter of that? Ihave just seen? Watson was what the
president of coal mice, that's all, biggest man in town. I'm the
maddest. The mine is not working. You're all steamed up over the bells.
Well, Wasston can't stop the bells, can't he? I think he
can't poorly. Must be somebody moreimportant than Watson. Well, the governor
maybe, and there's always the presidentof the governor. That's it. Any
of you boys know him. Idon't know the governor again, but I

(39:27):
know a secredary. My wife,Scott grab a phone, then put a
call in for him. If thegovernment governor should issue a proclamation, even
Wasson would have to shut up.I thought you'd like to see the newspapers,
Harris, take a look at thisheadlines too, and Sylvenia government issues
proclamation all denominations to observe Starr's funeral. Here's the gloves nationwide morning accorded Alga

(39:53):
and you know what the journal turnnever mind, never mind. I have
never seen a campaign like this. And all my born days and two bandits
home for nothing, for nothing.I just this minute hung up the phone.
Genevieve James is available if she wantsto do Joan of arc Well that
is news, isn't it. Youknow? Donand I was almost hoping we
could go ahead as Donegan wanted, but naturally this changes everything. We'll remake

(40:15):
the picture with Genevieve James. I'llget a telegram off to Donegan right away.
And what's that telegram though? FromHollywood, isn't it? Yeah,
yeah, it's from Hollywood. Barcushappens. Uh no, no, no,

(40:35):
it's not a studio. They wantto hire me. They I think
I'm pretty good. Yeah, wellI'm gonna get some sleep up. Well,
I think I'll go for a walk. Good night, boys, and
thanks for a swell fie anytime.Well, baby, the bells were still

(41:00):
rings. Your star up, they'restill shining. But I didn't do so
good. Baby, They're going toremake the picture, so you can quit
shining to small dice. I'd letyou down, way down. It was

(41:27):
now for station identification. This isCBS, the Columbia Broadcasting System, w
j R and w j R fM Detroit. In a moment, we'll

(41:52):
bring you Act three of the Miracleof the Bells. Our guest tonight,
paramount starlet Jean Ruth is just twentyyears old and already an accomplished tactics and
dancer. I understand, Geane, you've spent almost as many years in the
theater as you have birthdays. Yes, mister Keating. Both of my parents
and didn't show business nearly all theirlives, so I was literally raised in

(42:14):
theater and now you're well on yourway to a movie career. Does the
picture business come up to your expectations. It's even more fascinating than i'd hoped
for, Tate. Last Wednesday Night'spremiere at the Emperor Walls. It was
such fun seeing all those famous starsand the picture. I got a special
thrill out of that because I sawso much of the actual filming, and

(42:35):
besides bing Crosby has one of hismost romantic roles in The Emperor Waltz.
Wasn't he terrific? I love thosescenes where he's sang Joan Fontaine. Well,
evidently Joan loved them too, becauseevery time being sang to her,
she literally wil died into his arms. I saw you, mister kiddie,
at the premiere. You were applaudinglike mad. I had a wonderful time,
all right. Remember that scene whereBing and Jon are in the canoe.

(42:59):
Oh that was that's beautiful and intechnical Joan looked simply dazzling. That
brilliant sunlight was a test friendly star'scomplexion. But of course, since Joan
is a lux girl, we needn'tsay another word, right except business to
Kennedy. John Fontaine told me thatLuck spoilet soap is her daily complexion care.
She recommends Luck soap facials for anygirl who wants her skin to be

(43:22):
lovelier, and I certainly agree withher. Well, you're in good company.
Nine out of ten famous stars knowthat those beauty facials really work.
My mother told me that she mademe realize years ago how important it is
for an actress to have really niceskin. That's why I'm devoted to my
Lux soap care. I'm sure acamera close ups will never bother you,

(43:42):
Miss Jean Ruth, Thank you andthe best of luck. And here's a
smart tit for women everywhere. Dailybeauty facials with fragrant white lux toilet soap
make skin lovelier. Try this finewhite soap. You'll enjoy its rich,
creamy lather. It's now look atflower like perfume. Here's your producer,

(44:04):
mister Kelly. Our curtain rises onthe third act of the Miracle of the
Bell, starring Fred McMurray as Bell, Dunnigan Valet as Olga, and Frank
Sinatra as Father Paul Marcus Harris, the producer has decided to remake Joan of

(44:30):
Arc and Bill Dunnigan's frantic efforts tobring Alga before the world have failed.
But in Coldtown the bells still ringout, and in the humble little church
of Saint Michael, the funeral serviceis about to begin. Neverthefore has the
church been the cross an outside greatcrown struggle to get in. Then suddenly

(44:54):
within the church, strange sound isheard, a rumble, almost like a
dan earthquake, transfixt the people starebefore them for the holy statues around the
order are moving, the statue ofSaint Michael, the statue of Mary Areturney.
Until now they faced the coffin.I'll get trescoot now the movie.

(45:17):
The statues. Look at them, their move The statues are turning. But
you're returning, Todd Bird looking atthe coffin. He excuse me, excuse
me, please, you're you're thesex nager. Where is he? Where

(45:37):
is Father Paul? He went downthere, mister Dinigan, down to the
basement. Father Paul part Paul.I hear that, Father PAULA. I
saw it. I was in theback of the church when it happened.
I saw the statues turn. Yes, I know, Bill, That's why
I came down here. Look,Father Paul, I started this thing.

(45:59):
I started the bells ringing. Thereis a gag to get them to release
Auga's picture. But I didn't dothat upstairs, so I help me.
I have nothing to do with it. I know, Bill, I know
there's statues turned by themselves. Theyturned and looked at Olga. Look,
Bill, look at this post. You see the ground is broken around this
post. What the ground, Bill, It's broken, and all the way
across to the base of the otherpost. The statues are directly above these

(46:21):
posts, and the posts support thestatue's Bill, are you trying to knock
out the miracle? There wasn't anymiracle, you see. There are a
lot of old mind shafts under here, and the earth isn't too solid,
and the movement of the two postsmade the statues turn. Bill, that's
it, huh. Yes. Irushed down here because I was worried about
the flooring of the church. Allthose people up there. Our floor isn't

(46:44):
used to such crowds. What areyou going to do? Father Paul?
Wait, I'm going to tell themthe truth? You know the truth?
Yes, Bill, Father wait,I must tell him. Bill. It's
my duty. It's your duty totake the light out of their faces as
upon it. I saw them whenit happened. I saw those poor bitter
faces shining as if someone had turneda light on inside them, and I

(47:07):
heard them praying and giving thanks. And now you're going up and tell him
it was nothing but a couple ofbasement pillars and a piece of broken ground
there. You don't seem to understand, Like, look, father, I'm
not thinking of putting over a movienow. Whoever turned those statues wasn't trying
to sell a picture for Marcus Harris. I tell you, Father, God
was trying to say, life's allright, It's not as bad as it

(47:30):
seems. And I'm up here watchingand trying to help. And even if
he didn't say it, Father, can't you see it's in their hearts now?
It'll go out all over the world. And if God doesn't speak like
that out of heaven, he'll bespeaking out of people's hearts. And what's
the difference where he speaks from Yourjob isn't to hide his word, is

(47:52):
it? No vill it? Itisn't to hide his words. The Saints
came to Joan of Arc because shewanted to help someone. The people of
France all go wanted to help someonejust as much the people of Cold Town
give her a chance. Father Paul, Come with me, Bill, we'll
go up. Now, My dearfriends, something strange and wonderful has happened.

(48:30):
The faces of the Blessed Virgin andSaint Michael have have turned to look
on one eyes among us in thecoffin. I will not speak of what
made the statues turn. Others willtell you the answer to that. Later,
I speak to you of no othermiracle than the miracle of the Alga
Trakis of the world of those wholive and dream only to bring Heaven into

(48:52):
our lives, even if it isno more than a smile of fellowship or
a moment of beauty. Alga diefor this, for the beauty and the
tired and lonely hearts of the people. Let us pray for his nominee.
But she had Philly experienced, misterHarris, But something tremendous has happened.

(49:25):
The hormodernous paper reporters off there andthey want to happen. What are you
talking about? A miracle, misterhart miror in coal Town? A miracle
has happened to Augurtris Colt and Iwon't hear such bunkets sacrilegious. And if
Dunninggan thinks it isn't Dune again, two huge statues at the altar turned to
look at olgun her Coffin, Whatdo you mean it isn't done again?
Do you think for one moment theAlmighty is interested in selling my movies?

(49:45):
And you believe it. The wholecountry believes it, mister Harrod, This
time Donegan's gone a little too far. When a press agent starts pulling the
people about religion, improve with him, but the statues turned mocass. Hundreds
of people saw them turn. Thenhe paid somebody to have them. Don't
you believe in miracles, Marcus, you just made a picture about one Joan
of Mark. Yes, I believein miracles. I was brought up to

(50:07):
believe in God and in miracles. But I won't stand for presagient miracles.
Report us. I'm fine, I'lltell them Bill dunnag is the biggest faker
in I I've turned on your radio, mister Harris. Can you listen in
for just a moment. They're talkingabout it on the radio. Turn it
up, bity, all right,Marcus, listen, distinguished correspondent Laul Hunter
here in coal Town to report onthis amazing happening. The whole country is

(50:30):
asking did a miracle happen in coalTown? But here nobody asked that question.
Every man, woman and child believesthat the grace of God has touched
them. To them, a miraclehas happened, something so wondrous that it
has torn the bitterness and the doubtsin the hearts of the people and brought
them back to God. Whether thisis a miracle or not is up to

(50:52):
the church authorities to decide. ButI do know this. When our guest
Raskovna was brought home, a wonderfulthing happened. Everyone here is convinced that
somehow divine Providence is blessing calls houseand the people in it. What a

(51:15):
day this has been, Bill,What a wonderful day. Look at those
telegrams at my desk. How amI ever going to answer them all?
Tomorrow? There'll be more. Youdon't ask them about Paul. You get
a secretary, She answers, Ohno, no, they were written to
me. Look we have being givena new organ by mister Watson. Others
are giving us a new room, stained glass windows. And look, Bill,
all this money for the poor andthe world has come to Saint Michael's

(51:37):
to pray. I must thank you, Bill, thank me. There's not
a little funny coming from you.You mean you still believe in the miracle.
I've been standing in the church mostof the day. Father, I
have tried to plant one line ofnewspaper copy. Do you remember when I
told you how I couldn't tell allof what I felt? Well, this
is the second time in my lifethat I've been dumb. I can't tell

(51:59):
the world of That's why I knowit's real, because I'm no good at
selling anything that's real. Well,I guess I'm through here through. Oh
no, Bill, No, Bill, You're just beginning, Marcus L I'm
happy to see Hello Marcus. Hello, doll father. This is mister Harris,
mister Dolan, straight from Hollow Yes, special Plain, I'm very glad
to know your father. Bill.I'm a man who knows me. He's

(52:21):
like you, will you Bill fonthe poll set Michael Walter and a couple
of statues. I've decided to releasethe picture as quickly as possible. Brother,
Thank you Marcus. We're gonna putall of the Tress Grovener in pictures
in every city in the country. And I'll tell you what she's going to
do. I'm just going to builda hospital for coal Town, the best
that money can buy, a clinicfor her people of the study of this

(52:43):
disease from which he died, sothat someday there will be no such disease
and people won't be dying from it. Because all the press Coodner died for
them worked and died for them. This is a great thing you're doing.
In Harris, It's beyond anything anyof his dreams. Maybe I I don't
know how old this started, butin my religion, when something happens that
makes the world a little better thanit was before, we know that God

(53:07):
has had something to do with it, and we don't ask questions in my
religion too, Mister Harris and Bell, when they see me, they know
it's their hard speaking, and whenthey see my name shining, we know

(53:31):
the theaters it'll be something of theirshining. I'm so happy Bill I did
my job. I can't imagine abetter Memorial Day tribute to our audience than

(54:06):
the miracle of the bells. Ourthanks go now to the stars. We
made tonight's play such an unforgettable event. Fled McMurray, Vallet and Frank Sinatra.
Fraid you just get back in timefrom the Chicago for meire the picture.
That's right. Frank and I bothwere there, and I understand the
sellout, Yes, mister Keilly, which was mighty gratifying since the proceeds went
to the National Cancer Drives. Andwhere were you Valet during all this working

(54:30):
at the studio but I wish Icould have been there. Well, at
least we had to for the radioRanier. And it's a great pleasure having
you back so soon again on locks. Well, it's a pleasure for me,
mister Kelly. I love radio, and i'd say radio loves you,
and so do I. God,Leada, you've been in this country such
a short time. How did youlearn to speak English so well? Oh?

(54:50):
I had a good voice coach,and I got to movies a lot.
For the movies. Uh, Iwish I could have studied English that
way. Say no, you don'twatch out a leader. You're gonna have
a lot of English students play hockey. Well, I'm sure, Vallet,
many actresses could learn a lot byseeing your excellent performance in the role of
Missus Paradine in David O. Selzni'sproduction The Paradine Case. That was a

(55:10):
thrilling picture you made with Gregory Pecki, and I like those typical Alfred Hitchcock
touches. You all ought to beproud of it. You're I'm not surprised,
Vallet, at the success of yourAmerican pictures after your many many screen
hits in Italy. But tell medo the screen stars of Italy depend on
lucks hoope as they do in thiscountry. Well, every interest now is
how important a good self is tothere complexion? Mister Keeley, mister Kelly,
