(00:00):
On the afternoon of Saturday, November10, 2000, Sarah Kufferkey, just
22 years old, went out tohave fun with some friends. Unfortunately,
Sarah never came home because she waskilled by someone who just finished her parole
before she started. I recommend thatyou sign up so that you can help
me reach the 100, 000 subscribers, a goal that I have and that

(00:22):
I hope to meet by the endof this year and I know that with
your help you can achieve it.Now, let' s just add a
little reguapine and see how it allstarted. Sarah Louis Cafferki was born on
June 20, 1990, in Victoria, Australia, daughter of Adrian Kefferke and
noel Dickson. Sarah was an onlychild. She grew up in the suburban

(00:47):
backush Marshe community among family and friends. When Sarah is nine months old,
her family moved to Queensland for herfather' s work, but about two
years later, her parents separated andshe and her mother, who mused on
back to pakus Marsh. Sarah graduatedfrom Coemady Elementary School began high school in
Marsh Backush Grammar and stayed until shecompleted the tenth year. Sara had asthma

(01:10):
since she was very young. Althoughsome of her attacks ended in hospitalization,
she was not diagnosed until she wasfifteen. These constant hospitalizations caused him to
lose his day of school, sohis senior year ended up studying from home.
At the age of sixteen. ApproximatelySarah began using alcohol and illicit drugs.
She received help in relation to herasthma and, as such, the

(01:33):
help was extended to cover her druguse. According to her mother, Sara
was a human being, beautiful, fun and loving who was loved by all
the privileged to be part of herlife. In September of the two thousand
eleven, Sara began a relationship withChristopher Stuwart. The relationship was intermittent and
the couple had many problems that causedthem to end and return. According to

(01:55):
her mother, the relationship began well, but after two months, she began
to have messages of tex where hewas vermally abusive and did not allow Sara
to go out with her friends. At that time, Sarah confessed to her
mother that she was consuming, buttold her that she had it under control
and her mother believed her because Idon' t see any different behavior in
her. By the middle of thetwo thousand twelve, Sara separated from her

(02:16):
partner and her mother said she founda taste for life again. She entered
a full detox program on the one- week program and expressed the desire to
want to change her life, buther past with her controlling boyfriend would come
back to torment her. Her formerpartner sent her friend Steven James Humter,
forty- six years old, toscare Sarah away while she was working.

(02:38):
But instead of scaring her the wayshe was supposed to be, they became
friends. His relationship became a platonicfriendship. During the following months, Sara
visited her at home and often leftparties. He told her that he was
going to be fine with him andthat her ex- boyfriend wouldn' t
bother her. Sara knew Steven hada criminal record, but she didn'

(03:00):
t care. They didn' thave a love relationship, it was just
a friendship. Sara saw Steven asa father figure. Sala began to consume
again, but this time if shewas determined to stop the drugs, so
she re- registered at the detoxclinic to re- carry her life.
In November of the same year.Little did she know that this was about

(03:21):
to end by the time of theevents. Sara worked at a hotel bar
in Melson and studied criminal justice, but on November 8th, two thousand twelve,
she was fired and informed that shecould return to work as long as
she ordered her life and that ishow, having all this context, we
are going to catch up on thefacts. Sara left her mother' s
house and on the evening of November9, 2000, she met her ex

(03:45):
- boyfriend that night to talk aboutthe breakup of her relationship. She left
it on good terms around ten o' clock at night. According to text
messages, Sarah and Steve Humpter hadstayed at their home, The Backus Marsh.
On Saturday, November 10th, twothousand twelve, Sara was caught by
security cameras collecting alcohol from a localsupermarket before going home, where they drank
and consumed. After that day,his trail was lost. November 12th.

(04:11):
Not knowing anything about Sara, hermother starts to worry and call her friends.
One of them Alexandra Ivan told herthat the last time she had seen
Sarah was November 9. This friendtexted Hunter and asked him if he knew
where Sara was, but he repliedthat she had two days trying to contact
her. That afternoon, noel Tixsoncontacted local police and made an official report

(04:32):
of his daughter' s disappearance. The police began interviewing all those who saw
Sara before her disappearance and almost immediatelydismissed her ex- boyfriend. They then
left a message to Stephen Hunter andasked him to contact them urgently. Hours
later, the authorities managed to communicatewith him on the phone and he commented
that he had been with Zara inhis apartment on the afternoon of November 10,

(04:57):
but that was about five o'clock in the afternoon. Leaving the
cha keys to Sara and when shecame back two days later, Sarah was
gone. He also mentioned that bythat time he was living in paint Creok.
The next few days, the officersknocked at his door, but they
were only able to report that theyfound a dog in distress alone on the
property. They looked inside through thewindows, but they saw nothing strange.

(05:18):
Officers of the homicide brigade would laterinterview the children in the neighborhood, who
reported having heard screams in the house. Next door, the officers didn'
t see Sara' s silver astrain the garage, but according to Hunter,
it was there on 16 November.Sarah' s car is found in
Mary Burnom, forty- nine kilometersfrom Backus Marsh. Finally, the detectives

(05:40):
of the Domicides Brigade went to Hunter' s unit on Saturday, November 17,
with a search warrant and noticed thatsomeone had tried to clean the floors
and walls. The crime scene examinersfound blood marches on the living room sofa,
a leather jacket, a pair ofgym dumbbells in the garage, two
bar stools in the garage, akitchen knife under a wooden closet in the
bedroom and a beak in the livingroom. That same day, in parallel,

(06:06):
the police went to Steven Hunter's other unit in paint Cook,
where officers raked a smell of decayinto a green container with wheels. Inside
the garage. They also found bloodstains on the ground and on a stairway
near the container, empty bags ofquick cements and an acid container. The
wheeled container was removed the next dayand taken to the Victorian Institute of Forensic

(06:28):
Medicine, where a CT scan revealedthe body of an adult at the bottom
of the container enclosed in lime andconcrete, it was the body of Sarah
caffer Keie, only twenty- twoyears old. A post- mortem examination
revealed that Sara had been stabbed nineteentimes in the head, neck, chest,
and abdomen. The body managed tobe identified by his dental record.

(06:53):
Quickly, the detectives launched a nationwidesearch for Hunter and also found another property
that Hunter rented to the house. He had called the rape dungeon on his
Facebook page. Finally, Steven Hunterwas arrested on Tuesday, November 20,
and when the police asked him ifhe knew why he was under arrest,
Hunter answered yes. Murder. Hestated that he remembered hitting Sarah or a

(07:15):
hammer, but not the knife attack. Police also questioned two other men on
allegations that they were involved in theremoval of Sarah' s body and the
burning of evidence. The investigators recoveredimages from security cameras where items such as
lime and acid cement were purchased, and were informed of a bonfire in which
Sarah' s belongings were thrown. Some of those who were being investigated as

(07:38):
potential accomplices knew Sara if anything happened, Ali knows where she is and where
she lives. It was one ofSadakafferki' s last comments to his mother
in the weeks before his death.Ali was Sara' s best friend and
he was Steven James Humpter, akiller with a victor. Death has felt
of Sarah left a bitter taste inthose living in backush Marsh, who considered

(08:01):
themselves people of the countryside. Itis unlikely that many of them knew the
real Steven Hunter or his terrifying past. Steven Jane Hunter was a killer with
an angry drug addiction, who wason probation for kidnapping a man and holding
him hostage when he met Sarah atthe age of 22. Steven was a
decent, hardworking young man. Hetrained a women' s football team and

(08:24):
had three jobs to support his partnerand young son and struggling to pay for
the mobile home they had just bought. Steven slept just over two hours a
night, so he used alcohol drugsto stay awake, so he has a
temper he couldn' t control.Jack Lee Mathews, better known as Jacke,
was an extroverted, lively young womanwho worked alongside him. Apparently,

(08:46):
Hunter tried to kiss him in awarehouse while changing a light and invited him
to have a drink and surf offerthat he already refused. Jack and told
his friends that he wasn' tinterested in dating a man with a child,
but Steven kept inviting her out anddidn' t take no for an
answer. Hunter told his male colleaguesabout the warehouse incident and said now that
I will not stop until I finallyget it on the evening of April nine,

(09:11):
nine hundred and eighty- six,as he left work and Hunter was
seen running through the door minutes laterwhen he returned to work, and that
night, his horse was wet andhe had changed his clothes the body of
jacky went against the back seat ofa burned car that had been left on
a bridge across the river Mary Burnomin Kaylor. The police talked to Hunter

(09:33):
several times about Jackie' s murder, peru he was cold and undisturbed.
In his interview at the end withthe police he declared that I will not
confess. We can play games allnight despite this statement. Finally, Hunter
collapsed and among sobs said I amnot a human being, I am a
dog. I want to go tojail. For 20 years after talking to
his wife, Hunter told the investigatorshis version of the truth. He said

(09:56):
he forgot the key inside his carat the supermarket, so Jackiso offered to
take him home to pick up theother keys. But, according to Hunter,
she drove to a station and kisseduntil he got angry and told him
to take him back. He claimedhe slapped her. She pulled out a
knife and somehow, Jacki ended upin the back seat repeatedly stabbed and bled

(10:20):
to death. I just stabbed herI went crazy and stabbed her and a
few more times. I should havetaken her to the hospital the first time,
but I was really scared. Huntersaid he went home just to find
out that his wife had visitors,so he had to raise his blood outside
and cover himself with a blanket beforeentering and changing confessor who had killed someone
and his wife then took him backto work and got rid of his clothes.

(10:43):
Bloody by him, Hunter recruited afriend to help him get rid of
Jackie' s body and the evidencehe had left in his car. They
sprayed the car with Querozen and sethim on fire and the friend took Hunter
back to work satisfied that he couldnot be linked to murder. Hunter went
on with his life and his work, but the others he had involved in

(11:05):
his crime urged him to confess and, when he refused, eased his consciences
By admitting his involvement to the police, Hunters clearly innocent of Jackye' s
murder, but the jury had noproblem accepting Hunter' s guilt and was
convicted of murder in a thousand ninehundred and eighty- eight and sentenced to
sixteen years in prison with a non- parole period of thirteen years. Somehow

(11:28):
he managed to escape from prison inFebruary of a thousand nine hundred and ninety
and received only an additional sentence ofthree months for doing so. He was
released in December 2000 as soon ashe met the requirements. After that,
he continued his criminal streak, includingkidnapping assault and torture, and was again
imprisoned for four years and six months. Somehow, his sentence was reduced by

(11:50):
six months and he was released onparole in October of two thousand and seven.
By the end of October two thousandtwelve, his probation period for those
crimes ended exactly eleven days before hemurdered Sarah. As I mentioned earlier,
Sara knew he had a criminal record, but she didn' t know the

(12:11):
motive behind it, as Steven Hunterlied about them. Almost a year later,
on August 11, in two thousandthirteen, Steven James Humpter, forty
- seven years old, pleaded guiltyto killing 22- year- old Saddah
kuffer Kee. The Victoria Supreme Courtheard, as it told the police,
that it wanted to be locked upuntil it died for the murder of Sarah

(12:31):
Noel Dickson sat in court for theguilty plea hearing with a picture of her
daughter. As the details of hismurder were exposed, the court heard that
Hunter and Kffer Keye have a friendshipbased on parties and drug use. He
saw himself as a father figure.According to Steven Hunter, what happened was
the following. He claimed he wascleaning his flat when he found a used

(12:54):
syringe belonging to his ex- partner. She made a derogatory comment about the
drug addicts that Sara mistakenly believed wasaddressed to her, so both began to
argue. Sara turned her back whilestanding near the kitchen bench. When he
turned around, Hunter lost his balanceand fell to the tile floor. When
he got up, Sarah hit himagain. Hunter claimed he lost his temper

(13:18):
and broke himself by attacking the roomwith a hammer and a knife. He
was much bigger and stronger than Saraand easily dominated her before stabbing her nineteen
times. Sara probably lost consciousness anddied shortly afterwards. Hontes left his unit
with Sarah' s body, stilllying in the kitchen. The next day

she sent a text message to Sarah' s phone at 10 (13:35):
00 a

m and 7 (13:39):
00 a m. Then Hunter drove to the house at
Point Hook before sending the Sara anothermessage saying hello it' s me calling
me. When you want to catchus up at 1: 30 in the
afternoon, Hunter sent one last textmessage to Sarah saying I need my keys,
call me. The police said thetexting was an attempt by Hunter n
in uer what he had done.Hunter returned to his unit. On Monday

(14:03):
he wrapped Sad' s body ina bag and put it in the trunk
of his drive to a friend's house around seven o' clock at
night and told his friend that hehad a body in the car and that
he had to get rid of it. Hunter asked his friend if his family
still had a property in the field, because he wanted to bury the body
there. Hunter told his friend thathe needed to do something fast, as
the body was starting to smell bad. They headed to a store and Hunter

(14:24):
asked his friend if he could borrowhis boat to get rid of the body.
Hunter then bought a 20- litrecontainer of hydrochloric acid, three quick
cement bags, a lime bag anda black plastic roll. They went back
to the parking lot where Hunter toldhis friend not to open the car.
There' s a body there.Hunter begged his friend to help him,

(14:45):
but his friend refused. Then hedrove to Point Cruk and pulled the living
room body out of the trunk andtook it to the carajo. He placed
the body a green container with wheelsand emptied the bags, concrete in the
container over Sarah' s top andmixed it with water. Then he returned
to Backush. Marsh took Sarah's car and left it at Mary Burnom,

(15:05):
where it was later found. Hunterended his story by telling the police
that they had been friends and gotalong well and again asked to be locked
up until they died. Defense lawyerTing Marge said Silvia is his client and
accepts that he will receive a strongsentence. I must not grant you a
period without parole. Marsh said hiscrime is up to other extremely depraved murders

(15:26):
and his early plea of guilt hassaved Keffer Kid' s family from the
uncertainty of a distressing trial. Thecourt heard that Hunter had a difficult and
terrible upbringing, characterized by abuse andfamily violence. March said he has no
friends or family support and said allhis friends are prisoners. For his part,

(15:50):
Noel Dickson told the Tribunal that hisonly daughter was his world and that
every fortnight he remembered that his daughterwas put in a wheeled container to be
discarded. Along with the base,I could now never tell her about her
future, her career, her loves, her wedding, her children. Let
me tell you Sara wasn' ttrash. I couldn' t say goodbye

(16:11):
to her, hug her for thelast time, kiss her and tell her
that I love her mentioned Sarah's father, Adrian caffer Ki, said
her daughter was kidnapped pointlessly and cruelly. I present it to you with knowledge
of your past and ask you howand why Sara was studying social justice and
it is ironic that justice was theonly thing that failed you. He said

(16:33):
Finally, on August 21, StevenHunter was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment
without parole. The judge said thatthe way Hunter had treated Sarah' s
body had been an aggravating factor inher criminality. He said he had shown
total disrespect for Sara as a personoutside the courthouse. Noel Tixson praised the
judge' s courageous decision to imprisonHunter for life and said that the result

(16:56):
had restored some faith in the ss or justice that justice had been done
for Sar' s family and friends. Sara was a beautiful young woman with
a lot to live for. Shewas brilliant, fun and loving. Sarah
was loved by everyone she met andwe' ll all miss her. Steven
James Homter will die in prison asrequested. We will continue to fight for

(17:18):
change in the probation system, becauseparole is a privilege, not a right.
He said despite asking to die inprison just a month later, he
filed an appeal against his life imprisonment, but it was denied. In December
of the same year. By Marchtwo thousand fourteen applied for leave to appeal
to the High Court, saying thatthe Court of Appeal was wrong to say

(17:41):
that he should never be released. His lawyers argued before the High Court that
the indefinite sentence imposed was excessive.Again, by August of the same year,
two thousand and fourteen lost their attemptto reduce their life imprisonment and they
no longer have any avenues of appeal. Sara' s mother said there were
cries of joy from family and friendsin the courtroom when the decision was made.

(18:03):
I' m so relieved that allthis is over and he can never
hurt another young man. He addedthat the appeal was a waste of time
and money and that the appeals systemneeded a review. Two months before Sarah
' s murder, one of Australia' s most infamous and heinous crimes took
place. Hull Mark was brutally attackedand killed by another person who was also

(18:26):
on parole, a case he canfind here on the channel and so on,
after the details surrounding Sara' smurder were exposed. The issue of
people on parole attacking again and gettingaway with it was causing outrage, as
there was no trial. When Hunterpleaded guilty, there was no way to
check why Hunter got out of jailafter his first murder. But an investigation

(18:48):
into Satah' s murder in twothousand and sixteen left it all exposed.
Noel Dix Son, who campaigned forthe investigation and reform of the parole system,
said he had fado obvious in thesystem. For me, for all
these victims who have suffered terribly fromthese flaws and flaws. We will never
recover our loved ones, but allwe can do is wait and pray for

(19:11):
the Government to resolve this justice system. A coroner found out that Hunter was
not properly supervised during his probation period. Victorian coroner Ian Grey determined that Hunter
represented a real risk to the Communitywhen his probation period ended in two thousand
twelve, ten before the events. But the Parole Board for Adults was not

(19:33):
aware of a report that made itclear that Hunter needed substantial additional intervention,
which allowed him to play the NueralSystem. Tickson wants the Government to adopt
the forensic recommendations that serious violent offendersbe subject to supervisory orders such as serious
sex offenders. The Minister of Corrections, Steve Harberg, said that changes had

(19:55):
been made to the probation system andthat the Government would consider whether more was
needed. The motive for Hunter's first murder was merely sexual. But
in Sara' s case it isnot entirely clear, since her accounts of
an alleged discussion are not very credibleto the authorities, but unfortunately it is
something we will never know, unlesshe decides to tell the truth himself.
