(00:03):
Welcome to the nerd Polty. Welcometo the Maker's Method podcast here on the
Nerd Party Network. I'm your host, Darren Moser aka Doctor sci Fi,
and I'm joining in as always byDerek Young of Van's Props. And as

(00:25):
I say, was it speaking ofour our podcast demise is greatly exaggerated?
No, we are back. Wejust took a two month hiatus for the
most massive con crunch I've ever experienced. Oh boy, same here, So
yes, I know. Our lastepisode was April sixth. At the time

(00:49):
of this recording, has been abouttwo months to the day since we last
published. So thank you for bearingwith us. May hit us like a
dump truck full of costume bricks.I guess maybe that's the thing. But
yeah, oh man, I we'regoing to be getting into the cosplay,
the convention Star Wars celebration that weboth attended, all of the fun things.

(01:15):
Yeah, there's a lot to catchup. Normally when Derek and I
podcast, we have a little prechat, just kind of you know,
as friends catching up a little, but we've been very silent as we're like,
everything is going to be gold.Keep it in the save it for
the podcast. Derek it's right. It was intentionally awkward. But you're doing

(01:37):
well. I see you're rocking yourVan Oaks brand, so I would remember
where to subscribe. That's very good, very good. Yes, yes,
all is well over here, andI'm alive. I'm healthy. I survived
celebration along with tackling number of projectsalong the way, while building a costume

(02:04):
for my first cause play at aconvention after not going to conventions for three
years. It sounds like a recipefor fun or sleep deprivation whole time.
I mean, it was that weird, maniacal laughter that some people might think
you should be put away for.But so joker laughter, Okay, got

(02:29):
it, got it? Yeah, yeah, doing my best, doing my
best. Well, you know,we were talking about con crunch, and
so maybe because I definitely want toget to celebration and all the fun and
the joys that that experience was.But I feel like we need to kind
of lead into that with the previousweeks. And I don't know about for

(02:52):
you, but I am still reallybad at judging how long something is going
to take in my projects. I'mworst when I have my list, when
I have my trusty list, andI'm like, oh, it's just these
eight things one, two, three, four, five, six, seven,
eight, and I know the sequence. And once I know the sequence,

(03:13):
I feel like it is now doable. But man, sometimes that step
two can just kick you in thebutt. Yeah. I think for me,
I've gotten a little bit better attime management just from doing the weekly
videos. So I kind of know, Okay, I can kind of take

(03:35):
my time maybe on a Monday anda Tuesday, but by Wednesday, if
I'm not at full speed moving forward, it's going to lead to problems.
And I think coming into a conventionwith a bunch of unknowns, I kind
of almost put all the other stuffon the back burner and really spent the

(03:58):
bulk of my time thinking about orworking on stuff for my costume or for
missus Van Oak's costume, which that'sright, you had two costumes, which
I managed to leave part of iton my work bench. Oh no,

(04:18):
and so she didn't even get towear her entire costume, which in the
end worked out. Okay. Imean, there's always wonder con you know.
It's not like the you had tothrow it in the trash. You
can always take it to another connow. Actually, I ended up putting
all the stuff that I made, for the most part for sale up on

(04:41):
Instagram, and so it for themost part has all gone on to other
people who will put it to gooduse, you know, And that's that's
definitely a way to do it,especially when you don't have a lot of
space or you don't have an emptycloset like Jen Marcum to to fill with,
you know, all sorts of cosplay. It reminds me of, you

(05:01):
know, the years when all Iwas really making were VBS props at our
church every year, and you reallyhad to get used to the lifespan of
those things you made. It waslike, this was going to last for
a week and it's going to bebeautiful and enjoyed by children, and then
it is literally going to get thrownin the trash because it is not going

(05:24):
anywhere else. So that's that istotally a valid way of making you know,
you don't have to keep your fiveyear old droids around, you know,
continually working on the project. Itcould be just for one amazing weekend.
Yeah. Well, and for me, as someone who is making things
at a schedule, probably a bitmore advanced than the average person who's doing

(05:48):
this for a hobby, I'm constantlylooking for ways to sort of liquidate those
things that I'm making because space isalways at a premium. You know.
We we joke and say, youknow, if you're not using the last
six inches of your desk or youfrom a maker, but that is a
reality for a lot of us,myself included. And so anytime that I

(06:12):
can give something away or sell somethingwhich then can get you know, worked
into a new project, it's justsort of like the name of the game.
I would have to imagine it's thesame for other people who do content
creation as makers, where you justyou got to find a way. It's

(06:33):
got to go somewhere unless you reallylike it well. And any other thing.
For us too was like we don'tWe're not in the Five First or
the Rebel Legion or any of thecostuming groups. We did this specially for
celebration, and who knows when theopportunity to go full costume for us again

(06:54):
will be. So you know,I could plaind parts of my armor because
I felt like, should I everdecide that I want to do a full
Shore Trooper, you know, I'mlike a third of the way there.
Um, you know, my wifeon the other hand, she's she's not

(07:14):
interested in it to that degree, and so I knew that those things could
could be rehomed. No, thatthat's a very good point, you know,
And exactly, there's no there's nostandard, there's no rule that you
have to keep everything you make orlook at all those people who make commissions.

(07:34):
You know, commissioning is great becauseyou get to you get the joy
of making, but you don't haveto keep the object. You know,
it gets to go. It hasa permanent built in home that it's going
to go live in. But youget the fun and the and the process.
Now sometimes that's bitter sweet because youor you want to make two because
you enjoy it so much. Butyeah, rehoming, that's great. That's

(07:57):
awesome. And I'm sure they're youknow, you're helping other makers or other
cosplayers because man, they didn't haveto make that peace or that grieve or
poncho or whatever. Yeah, youknow, they now they can you've kicked
started their next costume. Yeah.I think I kind of fell into a
really interesting sweet spot because there's reallya big push now as theme parks and

(08:22):
things have reopened, and particularly asit relates to Galaxy's edge of people taking
their Disney bounding. They're costuming casualcostuming to another level that goes beyond just
like something that sort of looks like, you know, a character or whether

(08:46):
let's say it was you know,Han solo, you do a vest and
a pair of brown pants or somethinglike that. There are people now they're
like really going full steaming. Youhave some Karelian striping down the leg now
and yeah, and you know youmight have some kind of like Ammo pouches,
and you know you might wear aponcho or any of those things,

(09:09):
ponchos and capes. That's where it'sa very popular, very popular. And
so you know, being able tofind people that were interested in the stuff
that we had built, particularly forthese costumes, and knowing that the likelihood
of them showing up on people thenext time we go to Disneyland, you

(09:30):
know, very possible, but alsowould be super awesome to see it in
person, to see like how somebody'staken the things that we made for our
purpose and then made it their ownexactly. Yeah. So for me,
my big push was finishing K twoand yeah, it was pretty much every

(09:50):
weekend for the last two months leadingup to the kan. I was working
on him in some capacity, Andit's funny that a thing I always felt
I would get caught in was likethe three D printing. Like if I
didn't three D print all the piecesin time, you know that something that
has a finite, a specific amountof time is going to be spent printing,

(10:13):
and you can't really rush it.So if you don't design it and
print it, then you're kind ofstuck. And I was really trying to
incorporate these new three D printed linkagedriven fingers for his hands so they could
grasp and close, and that endedup not happening that it was getting close.

(10:35):
I had the fingers all printed,I had all the hardware, and
initially it was designed where each fingerwas kind of a module and the palm
part of the finger was meant toslot into kind of a larger bracket and
then that would give you the entirehand. And so I thought, okay,

(10:56):
well, I haven't printed any ofthese palm pieces because I needed to
figure out the McCanns. And thatalways is a sticking point too in my
builds when I'm still engineering stuff, because that takes a long time. And
i'd i'd like to iterate and prototypeand make it nice and functional, and
that doesn't work really well in acrunch environment. So I thought, I'll

(11:18):
just print all those palm pieces inone big piece and I'll put them both
on my bed and it'll print outin about sixteen hours and boom, boom
boom. And so I did it, and I'm like, that's the last
piece I need for his palm.I'm all set. And then I go
to put it together and I'm like, oh, well, by not doing

(11:39):
this as a modular system, andall of the pieces in the palm are
now fused together, I cannot putany of the screws into it except for
the ones on the end because thereis literally no way to get a screwdriver
into the middle ones. Because Iwasn't thinking order of operations of like.

(12:00):
And so I just sat there fora second and looked at it and said,
well, that is not happening, and scooped all that up and put
it in a little box off tothe side and pulled out K two two
point five's old hands that I hadnot gotten rid of and put them on
K two and that became the handsthat and you know what, at the
end of the day, nobody walkedup to me and said, now,

(12:22):
wait, wait a minute, doctorsci Fi. Your seven foot two robot
was supposed to have functioning fingers andit doesn't. So I'm I'm disappointed.
No, did that, that didnot That did not happen. But you
know, there there was definitely thatpart of the dash of what can I
not remake and pull off of thisold droid and throw on the new one.

(12:45):
Um so yeah, there are definitelyparts of him that were staying over
from the previous But again, nowit's so funny because after the con,
you know, that kind of tensionjust kind of operates and it's like,
oh, now it's back to afun project of I can take my time
and I can you know, Idon't have any pressing deadlines on this,

(13:09):
and I still have upgrades I wantto do, but they're enjoyable again.
Sure. Yeah, when you removethe feeling of doom from any from any
project, it immediately becomes more enjoyable. Or when you're on the other side

(13:31):
of it, right, either youfinished or you or you were able to
make peace and move on. Yeah, it may not be the original outcome
you wanted, but it's serviceable.Yeah. Yeah, it's like the old
adage don't let perfect be the enemyof done or finished. Yeah, and

(13:52):
that sometimes you just have to becool with it. Yeah. I definitely
did that. And like I said, when I was, when there were
still parts in like the last weekendbefore the con that I'm engineering, that
should have been a red flag oflike again my brain tells me, yeah,
Darren, but it's it's just theseeight steps, like you need to

(14:16):
engineer this part and then this partand then this part and then it all
comes together. And I'm like, yeah, passed there, and that was
dumb. That is that is notgonna work that way, and you know,
and there was definitely a part ofme, oh man, when I
was when we were getting really closethat I'm like, remember about two months
ago when you had a fully functionalK two that was done and it was

(14:37):
just there and the only thing youreally needed to redo was like the harness
if you wanted to maybe, butyou wanted to completely rebuild him sip of
theseus style like remember that pass there, And I'm like, yes, I
do. And again it all workedout. He got done, he got
there. I know. This kindof shifts into our celebration time. But

(15:00):
um, so I made the rookiemistake of don't we don't wear a cosplay
for the very first time at theconvention. You're premiering that at Don't Don't
do It, Don't Do It orAKA your K Twoso puppet cosplay. I
mean, it's basically the same thing. Oh my gosh, the shakedown cruise

(15:22):
on this thing was atrocious. I'mI get him in the car and I'm
like, I don't know how totransport him. I don't know how to
to like get him places. He'svery fragile. His hip joints are popping
out because they're press fit and they'renot holding everything. And it's literally the

(15:43):
first time I'm putting this whole thingon him, Like this was this was
dumb. This was not a goodidea. Now, I want to give
a big shout out to my friendTim and Lynn and his family because they
were my saviors for celebration. Theyhelped me so much. I'm gonna be
mentioning his name a bund this podcast. But the first way they helped me
was getting K two into the droidroom and they helped me take him in

(16:10):
the back of their rented minivan,so it's all empty. It's just everything's
clapsed down to nothing. And weget and we pull up and I put
him on and I'm taking baby stepsbecause he's his feet are catching, you
know, like it's like, oh, yeah, if I had tried this
on, I would have realized, like, the flippers are too flippy,
and this part is too stiff, and this part is too and and his

(16:33):
neck is leaning. He's everything isIt's just oh, it's very sad.
I'm like, I just need toget in the room, like it's the
walk of shame before the con, just getting from the curb into the building.
And then I'm like, once he'sthere, I can do some quick
fixes and could. Basically this wasK two's story. I got him in

(16:55):
Thursday into the con, and hedidn't come out for a walk until Sat
to day. It took me thatlong to just kind of patch him on
the fly and get him in astate where he was comfortable and walkable.
But honestly, the big driving forceleading up to the con is there were
people. You know, we hada row one meet up plan with a

(17:18):
bunch of Cause players, and Ihad a lot of friends who were saying,
oh, we're looking forward to seeingK two. I built this whole
imperial console for him to stand atand which looked amazing, by the way,
which is where all my time went. That's where all my time went
was building that, the hours ofthat, which I mean, I love
it and it turned out amazing. But you know that did help me push

(17:41):
through at the very end of like, Okay, I need to find a
way to make sure he's done.I not bringing him as not an option.
I've never brought him to a celebration. It's his it's where are they're
meant to be. So yeah,it there were two sleepless nights in the
week leading up to celebration where Idid not sleep that I worked through the

(18:03):
night. I don't recommend that. It's not fun, but yeah it it
was rough. It was really reallyrough. So so future Darren's going to
learn a lesson from that, andwe're not and we're gonna make sure we
get all of our upgrades for thenext time done. I was smart with
Beady. I finished Beady last Novemberbecause I'm like, I want him done

(18:27):
and in a tested state, andhe was a workhorse. He did great,
but I've talked for like twenty minutes, so popular, Oh, yes,
we'll get to the beady chapter.But I feel like I want a
need to let you talk a bitafter the K two saga. Well,
so current day, Derek took pastday Darren's advice, and I tried on

(18:51):
everything on Friday now for Saturday.Okay, So that, yeah, that's
a context is Saturday was the dayyou guys were going to the to the
con for one day, so theday before that's brilliant. Twenty four full
hours to make changes. Well, and here's the thing. I had fully

(19:11):
resigned to the fact that if somethingwas uncomfortable, I was just not going
to wear it. It's gone. It's while the weather was very nice for
the most part, um walking theshow floor was a little stuffy, um

(19:36):
and I had like what Thursday Ithink it was, had gone to a
local army surplus store and it justpicked up like a cadet cap to wear
because I was trying to solve forsome other problems that it ended up not
even being an issue. But soI had this cap and even though it's

(20:00):
very thin material, it didn't breatheat all, and wearing it, I
could just feel the sweat like beatingup on my forehead, and I thought,
like, I'm just not going todo this. It's a hat.
It's fine. I'm glad you madeup character that nobody's going to be like,

(20:23):
well, it's like wearing a tiepilot without the helmet. Let's say.
No, it's nothing like that. It's totally optional. So you know,
in that case, I had justgiven myself the permission to say if
something was, you know, uncomfortableto any degree, the car was not

(20:44):
far away, we could ditch it. No one would be any the wiser,
And ended up finding that the hatwas the only thing, and that
was something that was like never reallya part of the overall theme of it.
Right, So for anybody that's beenfollowing me on Instagram, they saw

(21:07):
that I was trying to build sortof the bas off the concept of the
well for the reason that I waswearing the hat. Oh oh, I
should give it a little context. So I had built the shore Trooper jaw
piece, which was going to bea mask cover, just so that it

(21:30):
all kind of felt more Star Warsee whatever, Right, But the only
type of strapping that I could findthat actually kept the mask cover in place
was the type that you would geton a respirator, right, which just
looked super weird. Yeah, it'sa lot zone and was sort of uncomfortable

(21:55):
or I could see it becoming uncomfortable, and so I thought, well,
you know, maybe if I geta hat, then like the crown portion
of the respirator strap will be onthe hat rather than directly on my head,
so it won't look so strange, won't like or it's covered by the
hat, it's blends in a littlemore kind of give me some options there.
And in the end I ditched themask cover altogether because it just wasn't

(22:21):
going to be comfortable, and sothen the hat was kind of pointless anyhow.
So yeah, no, that makessense. Yeah, I'm looking at
the picture on your Instagram. Unfortunatelywe did not cross paths on Saturday to
see but you know what finding peoplein a con is. I'm surprised how
many people I knew I actually raninto. Like it was actually really pleasant

(22:42):
throughout the four days. But yeah, any sort of planning besides one of
the parties has to literally stay inone spot for like an hour, and
then the other person has to bethe finder, like that's the only way
it works, and it barely worksat that. Well, and you had
four days and you were able tosee people, but one day nearly impossible.

(23:07):
Yeah, unless you have a predeterminedplan, there's there's nothing that's going
to happen. And I just sortof assumed, like I kind of knew
who was going to be there andhad general ideas of what they would be
wearing. So I figured, oh, well, like I've seen all of
these people's work, it's it's hardto miss K two us. So right,

(23:30):
he's seven foot two. Yeah, you know, General Grievous Puppet.
Yeah, I saw that guy seventeentimes. Yeah, I think that was
I think there's two of them.I think Jeremy was one of them.
Yeah. Well, And that's thething though, is it's like we're all
moving around, so like I couldbe by the fountain and you're by the
fan stage, and then I goinside and then you go outside, and

(23:52):
we completely miss each other. Likethere's it's too big of an area to
just run into people by chance.Like it happen, but it's rare.
Yeah, all right, So okay, so leading leading up to the con,
I'm not counting all the nights thatI didn't sleep. I already told
you it was two where I'm gonnatell you which ones. But my family
we turned it into a fun Disneylandslash con adventure vacation. So we did

(24:21):
all day Disneyland on Tuesday, whichmeant for me it was not a bill
day. But I had a greattime. It's really the first time in
the last several years that we've beenable to all go for my son,
Like he doesn't even remember the lasttime. He was barely three, so
so all intensive purposes the first timefor him. Great time, lots of

(24:44):
fun. We had multi day ticketsfor them, so we didn't have to
jam everything into that day, Likeif it doesn't happen, it doesn't happen.
So that was really nice. Youknow, did the parade, the
light the Electrical Light Parade, andjust saw a couple of the Droid builders
are walking around, you know, that happened. Was a nice running into
them, and I knew a lotof other friends from out of town who

(25:08):
were coming into town, you know, and we're also doing Disneyland that day.
But but that was just a familyday. It was as time just
for that we could check into ourhotel and just stay there in Anaheim for
the week. Nice. Yeah,we ended up kind of making a longer
weekend out of it than we hadintended initially. I'm a fan of driving,

(25:34):
so the idea of just like drivingfrom the San Fernando Valley to Orange
County and back and then doing itagain the following day is, you know,
not a problem, it's just time. It's just time and unfortunately expensive
gas these days. But in theend we decided to stay down in the

(25:59):
area and so we were able toshoot out Friday night and stay over so
that Saturday it wasn't a super longcommute and then waiting in a long line
to get into the parking structure andthen waiting in another line to get through
security and etc. Etc. Sowhile it was not nearly as fun as

(26:22):
Disneyland, we did have sort ofa mini maker meetup Alliteration three on the
board and got to hang out withsome of our favorite YouTube guys who also
are part of the Star Wars RoomBuilders group. So we got to hang
out with Brian and Dennis and Ronand Cameron, which was a lot of

(26:51):
fun, and it was that wasreally interesting to meet people who you interact
with on a pretty regular basis onlineand then to meet them in person.
Um, you know, I rememberdoing this in the early days of the
Internet, where it was like itwas either going to be the person that

(27:12):
they said they were or you weregetting to them right, because that's how
old I am. But all ofthese guys, I felt like like they're
genuine. They're genuine for sure. And I had such a good time hanging
out with all of you, eventhough I was the lone weird guy staying

(27:37):
outside. You know, it wasthe weather was nice. Yeah, my
family and my young wings also gotto come to Brian's bruise and barbecues.
And this was, like you said, Friday night. So this was the
night of the Disneyland After Dark event, which I actually had a ticket purchased
secondhand initially, and I was like, you know what, this barbecue actually

(28:00):
sounds like a lot of fun.Like it sounds like way more fun than
jamming elbows with I mean, yeah, Star Wars is always fun and Disneyland's
always fun, but this is aunique opportunity to just hang with cool people.
And didn't regret that to sit infor a moment that was a lot
of fun to be hosted by friendsand just yeah and just chat and just

(28:22):
say. I mean, we hadto go put the young things down at
an earlier hour, so unfortunately couldn'tstay as long. But for the time
we were there, the food isdelicious and the company was great. Yeah,
yeah, and yeah, so interestingand I'm really glad that we were
able to do it because the followingday, when I was at the convention,

(28:45):
I saw Dennis and no one elseright, and it was really making
an effort to be like, Okay, I know what everybody's dressed as today.
I ran into Brian, but Idon't think I saw I saw him
in but I didn't see anybody elsefrom that night. So yeah, but
yeah, well, and like yousaid, it's smart to have your hotel

(29:07):
room because then you have the latenight Friday event and then you don't have
to drive all the way home andbe Daisy fresh on Saturday. Yeah.
Although I will say this as afirst timer for doing costumes at a convention,
getting dressed in the parking structure anexperience. Oh yes, parking lot

(29:30):
changes, which is funny. Whowas it I remember I was. I
came across a cause player and whomust be a local because he remembered me
from years ago at a Wonder conand he was like this random Han Solo

(29:52):
that helped me in the parking lotput on L three and like and because
yeah, I can't put it onby myself. It's it's very difficult to
do. And so but he rememberedthat, and I was like, of
all the chances of running across thisperson again, you know, of course
at a Star Wars convention. Sothat was a fun, you know,

(30:14):
re meeting. But yeah, sofor me, So Tuesday was Disneyland and
then Wednesday was Droid set up day, so that was loading in Katwo's dock
because Kate, remember Katuo's not doneat this point Wednesday, so so K
two's literally the last thing I puton. Is I'm like, well,

(30:36):
crap, if I'm putting the dockin the room, I can't do anything
to it. It's got to bedone. And it is done, but
it doesn't have the K two dockpart yet, so I have to figure
that out in like the wee hoursof the morning. And it was literally
like a like a vertical piece ofwood and it fit together fine, but
I had to like make a littlekind of pock for it to slide into

(31:00):
and bolt that on because I'm like, I can't do it once it's there,
so that so I finish that.So so my friend Trevor from Canada
who was down here, helped mebecause again with the drop off, you
have to like have a second personwho's always in the car, and there's
like rules and fortunately we've worked itout with like the teamsters and all that.

(31:22):
We're basically it's this I remember exactlywhat they call it, but it's
like we have a window of timewhere we're allowed to bring our own stuff
in because you know, basically theydon't want to touch our droids and we
don't want them touching our droids. So it all works out. So so
they worked out because Trevor had roomin his truck for me to put the
pieces of the console in so thatwe are all riding together and there's more

(31:47):
multiple of us, and I wasable to get it upstairs, get it
plugged in. You know, atthis point, we're just putting the room
together, like literally, it's youknow, it's we're hanging lights and putting
up the pipe and drape and everything's got to be done and assembled,
but it was a great first timeof seeing and interacting with the other droid
builders. My last celebration in twentyfifteen was I had just joined the five

(32:10):
oh first the year before, soit was a lot of five oh first
heavy and this one was definitely droidbuilder heavy. This was the crew I
was rolling with most of the time. And yeah, again that same interaction
of people I'd been chatting with everyother Saturday at drinks and droids now in
life, which was great, youknow again, genuine people, fun people.

(32:36):
So pretty much I worked there untiltwo, which was when we were
able to get our vaccination wristbands, and then I'm like, okay, I
gotta go home and finish Gay twobye, and drove home and pretty much
did not sleep that night finishing himuntil about like six seven thirty ish.

(32:57):
Basically I started to hit that pointwhere if I don't leave now, traffic
is going to be a problem becauseit's still a Thursday. So I'm like,
okay, throw him in the car, and and I was half of
the time driving down Anaheim, soif the verse thirty minutes, I had
the windows all completely down to airdry, so he doesn't because I'm like
I don't want to put him inthe room and then he streaks of paint

(33:20):
and plasty dip and fortunately it worked. But you know, I'm just like,
Okay, it's gonna be a longday. But but yeah, but
that rolled us into Thursday, sofirst day of the con for me.
Yeah, and you know, I'mlooking at my calendar is the only way
I can remember all the things thathappened because there's so much. But I

(33:43):
found that worked great for a con, and this can apply to any con.
It's okay to put everything on yourcalendar, but when the day comes,
like pick two things that you definitelywant to do, and everything else
is gravy because it's just it's toomuch. You cannot do it all,
you cannot see at all. Timeto get places becomes a factor. It's

(34:05):
like, oh yeah, well I'mgonna chill at the five first diorama and
then I'm gonna go over to thedroid rooms. It's gonna take you like
twenty minutes to get there, Likeyou got to factor that in. It's
not just a hop skip and you'rethere. Yeah. Yeah, that is
definitely something that this is kind ofhow we travel in general. Like if

(34:29):
we're going out of the States orwhatever. It's like you kind of know,
all right, there's a finite amountof time. What are the must
sees and what are the nice tosees. Yeah, everything becomes a hierarchy
real fast when you're like, okay, well, because like so the only

(34:49):
so for at celebration the way theyworked the first of the day panel.
So the first panel was it wasa lottery system and you punched in their
app and that was a good wayof doing it, so we didn't have
to camp out or anything like that, which they didn't allow. But so
I did get into the Lucasfilm Showcase, but it was like eleven to twelve
thirty and I'm like, I justwant to hang out in the droid room.

(35:12):
I don't really want to be ina panel, and I'm not a
big panel part. I ended upgoing to no panels. There was like
one other panel on Sunday. Iwanted to try, but by the time
I got to the line, I'mlike, that's just hours. I don't
want to spend in a line.So I didn't go any panels a celebration.
I don't regret except for that one. But but yeah, but I
you know, took out. Basically, my routine each day was take beat

(35:37):
out for like two hours on thecon floor and then go take a little
break and do lunch, and thentake them a little bit out in the
afternoon, and yeah, just dothat. Like that was pretty much my
day. And I picked one thingto collect and that was the Ohio Star

(35:59):
Wars Collector Club where is it.They had a puzzle patch, which if
you don't know what puzzle patches are, they're basically like a giant patch that's
been cut up into pieces and thegoal is to gather every single piece and
then you make like a large object. So this was seventeen pieces and it

(36:20):
makes like the old Star Wars VaderKenner cases with all the figures in it.
So that was my thing. I'mlike, okay, the only way
is to go buy their booth likeall the time and check for different people
who had different patches. But I'mlike, I can't collect anything else.
I just got one thing that I'mtrying for. And I'm also walking around

(36:42):
with one hand, you know, strapped to a droid half the time.
So but it was fun. Iremember I walked around with Trevor. He
had his R six that was drivingaround and and man, okay, let's
let's talk about bad one for asecond. To say that bead One was
popular is like an understatement. Hewas very popular. It was amazing.

(37:10):
Pretty much every encounter went like this, Like I'd be walking along and you
get kind of used to that sideeye, like that person is interested in
what I'm holding in my hands,and I'm like, I'm not in a
hurry anywhere, so peel over andjust walk right up to them. And
then they see Beady moving. They'relike, oh my gosh, he's adorable.
He's the cutest thing I've seen.And they're like that, can I

(37:31):
take a picture? And then Imove them some more and they're like can
I take a video? Because nowthat I see it moving, I don't
want just a picture, which againis totally fine. And yeah, it
was so fun just interacting with people. Everybody knew who he was, it
seemed or thought it was cool.I had some amazing interactions with like kids

(37:53):
where I'm like sitting on the floorhaving this like Jedi padawan moment. They're
just looking at him and kind ofjust trying to see how it I'm disappeared
at this point, like I'm doingmy job where they do not see a
puppet, they see an a livecreature on my arm. And it was

(38:14):
like that the whole weekend. Itwas so much fun to take out Beatie
one every day. Well into yourcredit. You do a great job puppeteering
him. Thank you. Yeah.I would had practiced, you know,
it's I laugh. Like people sawsome of the videos back in November when
I first finished him, They're like, oh, it looks so great,
and I'm like, I'm not doinganything. I'm literally just twiddling my fingers

(38:36):
and it looks like he does stufflike I have not practiced yet, I
have not connected. And so forthis I dialed in a lot of the
sounds and the music cues, andI had three main sounds I used.
I had a kind of like chirp, which was the look over here chirp,
and that was you know, it'sa little like dude, And basically

(38:57):
that was as I'm walking so andI would just hit that I'm going so
people would be like what is that? That made sound over there and you
know, kind of draw the attention. And then there was a second one,
which was like a hard to describeterms without saying them, but it
was like a d like a littlelike happy noise. And what I would
do is I would make him kindof stand up, so he'd be a

(39:20):
little crouched a bit, and thenI would play that sound as he kind
of stood up, and people likemelted at that. Like that. I
was like first time I did itand people had a reaction, I'm like,
Okay, that is that move andsound combination of that emotion. And
the third one is the head scratch. So I'd often say, oh,
he loves head scratches, and they'dgive him a little and then they're like

(39:43):
that worked out well because it's givingpeople permission to touch him, but in
a specific spot because they want to, but they don't want to ask,
so they give him a little scratchon the head. And I would make
his ears twitch and his head kindof wobble back and forth and this kind
of like blah blah blah blah blahblah sound, and again they just go
crazy because he's adorable. So Iwould just go through those three sounds pretty

(40:07):
much every single time, and justthat was bringing it to life and just
and I'm just walking around and he'sjust you know, in the cradle of
my arm, and I'm always movinghim, always, even if it's just
a little ear flip or I'm makinghis head look back and forth like you
just start to You're ignoring him,but not ignoring him, Like I'm not

(40:28):
looking at him. I'm just walkingwhere I'm going. But if you were
to look at me from ten feetaway, it looks like something is alive
in my arms. That's the goal, is to convey the Yeah, well,
I mean that's the that's the signof good puppeteering, right, is
that it looks effortless. Yeah.Sadly, even after we've talked about him

(40:51):
all this time, the only waythat I've seen him was at the Frise
pect multiple videos, I didn't evenget to see him, and like you
didn't see about the barbecue. Barbecue, Oh, I had him out for
a moment. But yeah, somethingI remember what something popped off. But
but so you know, now thatwe're a week out from from celebration,

(41:15):
not quite a week out, twoweeks out, two weeks out now,
the conversations between Darren and I aresort of like, Hey, did you
see that You're in this video? How about this video? Yes, we're
in a lot of videos like, yeah, like I saw one this morning.

(41:37):
So the cooks um Levi and Toryand Brian are amazing costumers and they
they actually just moved out of state, but they were back for the convention.
And so she's the one actually inmy first collector card with K two,
she's the young Journey. So that'sposed I call it the Uncle K

(41:58):
two shot. Now, this wasfive years ago, so she's like twice
as tall now, and she hada really cool young Asoka causplay and so
like the short kind of head tailsand the dual lightsabers and the makeup and
all of that. And there's avideo that Tory shot and I found Tory
and we were chatting and I wasshowing her bad One and Brian had seen

(42:22):
bad One before and so we're chattingand she's like, oh, well,
Levi's over there, like let mecall her over, and she's like Levi,
LEVI, like come over. Andso the video is Levi kind of
like walking up, but she's notliterally looking where she's going. She's kind
of still distracted. And that sheturns and she sees BD and you see
her face light up and she's likebed and then the next shot is her

(42:44):
with I put him on her armand he's just kind of doing his thing.
That video, in about a weekhit a million views on TikTok.
It's crazy, which I'm like,oh, but now not on my channel.
I wish it was on my channel. But well yeah, but on
the oh what is it night Sisters? No, um, night watch the

(43:07):
night Watch Sisters. I think it'stheir channel name, but which A I
don't, I don't care. It'sI love the fact that, uh,
it's just it was that. Again, it's social media. It's that right
spice of length and when it hitand whatever. But but yeah, but
that was an awesome momentum. Andagain there were just moments like that throughout

(43:30):
the entire weekend. But yes, there's been a lot of videos where I'm
just like thumbing through. I havelike tags like bad One and certain things
that I'm subscribed to in my socialsbecause I do, you know, I
like the characters. So I'm oftenalthough I will say, right after celebration
or during celebration, I'm searching, you know, I'm like, oh,
hey, I wonder if anyone's posted, you know, any videos of my

(43:52):
bad One. All of it isjust posts of the Jedi Survivor trailer all
all of it, like no costumestuff, nothing, And I'm like,
oh, well, I guess thatis kind of saturating the discussion right now
a little bit. But yes,so but yeah, So that that was

(44:15):
Thursday was we had the Droid Buildersdinner at Boogi Debeppo, which was really
fun and again just we had likehundred people there just from all over the
world and just having some good oldspaghetti. But yeah, but that was
just a fun day. I spentI think actually I think I spent the
first hour two hours just in thedroid room, and so as people came

(44:37):
through, I just stood by Ktwo and bad and just talked about him.
And yeah, we actually had tolike I had to move a little
bit to a certain corner to havemy K two talks because it was becoming
a choke point of like everybody wantsto stop and talk. It's like the
first turn. And so we're like, because the way the droid room was

(44:58):
set up is kind of like amaking room of corridor, so it's like
one way in, one way out, so you don't so I couldn't stop
the flow. But but yeah, that was, you know, the first
first night and then I finally sleptfor the first time in a couple of
nights that night in my in myhotel bed, um and uh. And

(45:21):
that led us into Friday, whichI'm mostly just still talking because I know
you weren't there on Friday unless there'ssomething else you wanted to mention. The
live broadcast, which was cool.So how was the live broadcast? Because
I wish I had been at thelive stage more like, I felt like
they kind of had a schedule, but I didn't know what the schedule was.
I wish i'd been there when theydid the jfo jed A Survivor trailer

(45:45):
drop. But what was that like? Like, did you feel like it
was kind of a valid not avalid but a suitable way to kind of
be there but not be there toa degree. Okay, it's interesting to
think about it now, having bothbeen there in person and watched three days

(46:07):
of the broadcast. But you know, for people who aren't attending, it's
as close as you're going to get. And I feel like they do a
good job, mainly because they're notjust particularly this year, they didn't just

(46:29):
keep all of the good interviews tothe larger stage. They had pretty much
everybody come through and do five orten minutes. I think there's one day
where like all of a sudden, like Hayden walks out like totally unexpected,
and people just lose their minds.Like it was all about energy at that

(46:50):
stage. Yeah, which you know, I feel like having the what do
they have six hosts this here insteadof like the two with sort of correspondent
hosts, right, usually it's thetwo from the Star Wars show and then
but this had a larger group.Yeah. And they had also built it

(47:14):
where kind of cornering that stage wereall of the fan booths for all the
costume clubs, which were all dressedin the same kind of Navarro style.
So and that's how they kind ofpitched it to us. They're like,
oh we can We'll cut the cameraover and have a guy standing over there
and they'll be part of the show. Yeah, which, oddly enough,

(47:36):
I never got to see any ofthat because I didn't realize it was there,
because that sort of area kind offelt underutilized, and they was set
up. They had kind of cordonedoff the live broadcast area mainly, I

(47:57):
think so that they could contain insuch a way to make it feel full
on. Yeah, it was definitely. Yeah, it was definitely like a
well you saw it in person,so it was actually kind of like a
corner. It was that it wasa cornered off area with a stage in
the middle. Yeah, but soyeah, I ended up missing out on
being able to see all of thefan built like photo ops and all those

(48:21):
sorts of things, which was frustratingto realize that on Sunday and then pretty
much every day since that, likea new videos dropping or whatever, and
I'm able to kind of see otherpeople's perspectives of you know, the things
that you just couldn't see because youcan't be everywhere at once, right,
Yeah, that that is the thatis the name of the game and celebration.

(48:44):
You cannot do it all. Imean it's any any convention generally speaking,
um, but one that is thisattended definitely challenging, but not even
and not even attendance wise, juststuff to do, Like there's panel Like
That's why I talk to people likewhat kind of con do you want to

(49:05):
go to? Do you? Areyou a panel person? Are you a
shopper person? Are you a cosplayperson? Are you, you know,
an exclusive person like those can becompletely different con experiences and we just named
four like yeah, yeah, ora combination. Honestly, for me,
like, while it is enjoyable tosee all of the things available for sale

(49:30):
and sort of go down artists Rowand see all that sort of stuff,
the part that was most enjoyable forme was seeing all the costuming. Yeah,
that was my favorite. Two.You know, just walking in the
creativity Oh my gosh much just it'sexploded to assume every interaction you had with

(49:51):
people in bed one Like I itwas just sort of like, oh my
god, look over there, that'semphas nest or oh there's like the old
school Gamorian guards or like yeah, and you just see the stuff that is
done to such a level. Andeven though like a lot of these people
are the types of makers that Ifollow on social media and stuff like that,

(50:15):
and you see their work and youknow, we've talked about this at
length about you know, Instagram andstuff like that. As like people's highlight
reels. There were so many reallyfantastic costumes, oh amazing costumes that like
held up even under the slightly overcastday where everything was just totally flat you

(50:42):
know, yeah, like and thestuff was just really inspiring knowing that these
are all being made by people likeyou and I, who you know,
don't do this for a living. It's just a passion. And to know
that like all of them sort ofcame together in one location to see all

(51:06):
that stuff in person was just likereally out of control. So I could
have almost gone without being on theshow floor at least for the merchandise and
stuff, because I just don't careto see all that. Like if they
could figure out a way to sella ticket that was just for looking at
people in costume, that would bethe ticket I would buy. Yeah,

(51:30):
I mean, which I think beforeusually the nowadays like inside the plazas,
inside the ticketed area, but beforeit was like inside the building was so
a lot of you would have causeplayers who would come who didn't have tickets,
and they would literally just hang outat the fountain and kind of the
outside area was that no ticket causeplayarea. But it doesn't quite work that

(51:52):
way nowadays. But yeah, no, you know, for good reason,
they had a lot of stuff goingon in that little entry they did.
They did some food trucks and allsorts of stuff that you know, really
did need to sort of be behindsecurity and all that. Yeah, So
on Friday was one of the cosplaymeetups that I was a part of.

(52:16):
So I had been in a coupleof groups on online and Discord and Facebook,
and we had a Jedi Fallen Ordercosplay meetup and definitely one of the
top five highlights of the con forme. So this was I mean,
it's Jedi Fallen Order, it's avideo game. It's like a video game

(52:36):
from like two years ago. Andwe had like thirty five costumers out there.
We had a bunch of cows,we had a bunch of mirror INDs
and trillas. We had one likesouped up biker scout who had all the
extra things on from the game. And we had one Malacos, which is
it's always fun when there's one ofone character. So he's kind of like

(52:58):
a mini bos that you play, you know, during the game, and
you fight him. But it wasjust so much fun. And I mean,
did I know that Bad One isgoing to be an incredible start,
but he'd be fun. Of course, these are people who love JFO and
it's Bad One, so that wassuper fun. But there were other Bad

(53:19):
One there two there were other threeD printed ones. The guy from Princess
and the Scoundrel podcast has he andI had been chatting a bit and he
made a bad one that was onhis back that he had made a device
where it could swing from shoulder toshoulder and peek over the shoulders with like
a pole system and that was reallyreally clever. So yeah, it was.

(53:43):
It was a lot of fun though, just seeing those people, and
we had a photographer there that wasscheduled and they you know, were they
did like group photo and then allthe individual like clusters of the different types
of people and that was just alot of fun. And we did that
right in front of It's a commongathering place. Organized chaos at its best,

(54:05):
but h but a lot of funum. And then yeah, and
then like we said, we rolledhim too barbecuan bruise in the evening.
Oh and I did one other thingon Friday was I did see Daniel Logan
again, who I had built previouslya IG eighty eight statue for. He
was there at one of the Ithink it's the lunch Box booth and I

(54:29):
was able to get a little ticketto have him signed something and just say
hi, and I had my batone with me, and which is it's
good to see him again. He'sa nice actor and always always kind of
the fans nice. But yeah, but that rolls us into Saturday, your
your day of reckoning. Reckoning maybe, but um but what was kind of

(54:51):
what I thought was going to happen. But what was it like? Was
were you just kind of walking thefloor or just trying to find people or
just taking it all in? Likewhat was your experience there? I was
just taking it all in. Ikind of thought about it early on that
I didn't want to spend a lotof time taking pictures of things, like

(55:13):
I just wanted to be present.Yeah, and everyone else is going to
take pictures and post them anyway.Yeah, but such a highly documented event
that the likelihood of me being ableto find better pictures than I could take
of the things I was interested invery likely. Although I will say I
do have a little regret about nottaking pictures of a few things in the

(55:40):
Mandalorian, mainly because they would becool to three D model if they didn't
already, and you need the coverageto really do that. It would have
been smart of me going in thereonce I had seen one thing and thought,

(56:01):
oh that would I'd be kind offun to try to three D model
to have then taken out my cameraand take more pictures. But that's kind
of a it's a whole other story. But yeah, so you know we
got there. As I said earlier, I changed into my sort of shore

(56:24):
trooper deserter turned rebel costume in theparking garage, which was exciting. Thankfully,
I was not the only person gettingchanged in the parking curage. I
bet not. You turn around, you're like, oh, look, there's
a giant Gomorian. Of course thereis. And you know, getting into

(56:52):
the main sort of colonnade area aroundthe fountain and all that, like going
through the lines and whatnot very easy. Everybody was super nice, and you
know immediately you're just like hit withall of this visual stimuli where you're just

(57:12):
like, oh my god, lookat that person. Oh that's you know,
a cool alternative way to do thatthing, or you know, because
everybody's like remixing stuff or the levelof costuming is just at a beyond what
you would expect from a fan.Well, and this is two years of
pent up cosplay energy that has beendelayed since twenty twenty. So these are

(57:35):
all the people who were ready intwenty twenty and the people who have had
two more years to add to thesort of a yes and a no situation
here because Okay, I've asked peopleabout this, because you've had more time,
were you more prepared? And theresounding answer is no. A lot
of people who are like in adepression about not being able to get out

(57:59):
and see their friends and go toevents and whatnot, that they just weren't
working on whatever their character was,and so then they still kind of had
the crunch of it all at theend. That's true. So it was
sort of a mixed bag. ButI'll tell you what people were dressed to
impress. And you know, afterhanging out by the fountains sort of the

(58:22):
main area before you walk into theshow floor, you know, we were
probably out there for half an hourforty five minutes, and then we decided
to finally go inside and then youjust like hit with all the craziness that
honestly, any convention kind of brings. There's just like an energy that you

(58:44):
kind of have to be prepared for. Unfortunately, the signage, oh gosh
for the event was really terrible.Yeah, there was a map on the
app, but it was yeah itwell, and let me talk about the
droid room for a second, soI would say, and the very big

(59:07):
On Thursday, one out of fivepeople I would talk to even knew we
had a droid room, and bythe end of the con two out of
five people knew about it. Oneof those people was already had already seen
it, and one of those peoplewas planning on seeing it, and the
other three had no idea. Itwas like, can we just put a
big old sign at the bottom ofthe escalator saying droids and an arrow up?

(59:30):
And then at the top, likea big sign that says droids and
an arrow in. Like it wasI love signage, and I love like
the logistics of that and the flow, and it's like it was just not
there at all. Had it notbeen for the set dressing that they did
outside the room, we would writeright past it, right, that's true.

(59:53):
We had the cargo boxes outside.I'm glad you did because it was
an awesome room. Yeah. Findingthings very challenging. We probably spend an
hour just trying to find the Mandalorianexhibit, yeah, which is in a
whole other building, basically the wholeof the building, and we walked past
it like four times. But theonly signage they had for it was at

(01:00:16):
a height that when the people thatwere taking tickets and managing the lines and
whatnot, we're standing there, Oh, they were blocking them. Yeah,
it's and so you just walked rightpast it. I mean, I get
it's not distealing for them to havelike a big sign above that says the

(01:00:37):
Mandalorian experience. I mean, Iget that it's a it's a convention center.
Everything's temporary, everything goes up andcomes down. But leger it.
Yeah, it's like, come on, people, we need to They didn't
even have the little dot on theirmaps that said like you are here.
That dot is helpful extremely. So, you know, we spent a bunch

(01:01:00):
of time just trying to find things, which is unfortunate, especially now knowing
how many things that I didn't getto see in person because we were just
spending all this other time just sortof walking in circles. Almost. Yeah,
it's yeah. I mean I'll stillsee pictures now of like, oh,

(01:01:20):
they had these certain costumes on displayand I'm like, where is that.
I'm like, oh, it's literallylike in the middle of the exhibition
hall, and I'm like, butI never saw it. I either walked
right by it or just didn't didn'tsee it. Well, one last thing
with costumes, So Saturday was alsothe costume contest, which was really cool.
I didn't go to it and Ididn't enter it, mostly because it

(01:01:44):
just it takes a lot of yourday and and I was doing what I
loved. I'm interacting with people andhaving fun. That was my main jam.
And Saturday was the day I tookKTU out. We had a Rogue
one cosplay meetup, which was alsoa black We had tons of Cassians and
Gins and cronics and death Troopers andthat was really really cool. They weren't

(01:02:07):
there because I don't think they knewabout it, but I saw a bunch
of what was it stardust tech workers, like those kind of polyester jumpsuit.
There's like a hole. There's likeeight of them, and I guess like
just these eight friends were like,we're gonna do this costume as a group
costume, and they made them alland they looked amazing, and they had

(01:02:28):
little things they'd hand out, likea little patch that had like a blown
up earth on it or something andlike oops, you know, or something
said on it and I'm like,oh, that would have been great,
and you know again just that wasthe other nice thing about having the meetups
on like Friday afternoon and Saturday afternoonis it gives you a couple of days

(01:02:49):
ahead of time that literally anytime I'dsee a cow, I'd be like,
hey, do you know that thismeetup is happening at this time at the
Fountain, Like, oh no,I didn't know that. Or usually usually
on the day of you start toget the answer of oh yes, like
eight people have told me that, and I'm like, good because it's literally
word of mouth like to find thesethings. But that meetup was also really

(01:03:09):
fun. And now we didn't havean official photographer for that. We just
had some friends. And so becauseI had a speaker in K two,
apparently I was in charge because that'sall you need, I guess is allowed
speaker. But I had seen howwe had run it the day before for
the Jedi Fallen Order one, soI'm like, Okay, we're gonna do

(01:03:30):
the exact same way. So I'mlike, okay, if you are a
rogue one cause player, please stayingin a group in there, but he
stood in a group and we tooka picture, and he had a kid
a good mantra which I followed wasyou say like, okay, three two
one, go, and then youwait for a while and then you say

(01:03:51):
like three two one, relax becauseyou have to kind of say that so
everybody knows it's okay to relax andtake a breath before the next picture.
And then it was like, okay, all the cows come up, and
then it's like all the gins andthen all the K two's and that was
just me. But but that wasagain a lot of fun. And so

(01:04:11):
I didn't actually go to the Legionphoto. The five or first Legion photos
usually a big group photo, andthat got moved to one o'clock and I
just started to look at my calendarand I'm like, well, if I'm
doing the Legion photo, I'm doingit in my officer because that was the
costume I had brought. But thatmeans at some point, okay, if
they take the photo at one presumablyif they do, I didn't know if

(01:04:33):
they actually did, but you know, things are often late. I have
to get back to my hotel, change out of that, get get into
something else, like an actual Tshirt, because I'm gonna wear K two,
so not my droid shirt with allthe pins and patches. I just
wore my red Millennium Falcon shirt becausethere's also red Millennial Falcon shirt meat up

(01:04:55):
that I was trying to go to. But yeah, but i'd have to
go to my hotel, change intothat, then get back into the droid
room suit up as K two,and then get down to the fountain at
by two thirty and I'm like,it's not happening. I'm just like,
there's no way. So I justsaid, you know what, you can't
even tell if I'm in the fivefirst photo. It's so big, it's

(01:05:17):
it's not worth it. And Ididn't regret not going to that. You
got to just make your choices sometimes. Yeah, look, I mean it's
highly documented that you were in attendance. That is true. I didn't wear
my officer once, but I hada lot of fun. I mostly wore
my droid shirt and that just wasa lot of fun to wear. And

(01:05:40):
then yeah, and then Saturday nightat seven sharp, that'll be important in
a moment, we took the droidphoto, so we got all the droids
and loaded them all on the serviceelevator and went all the way down and
then did a nice little parade allthe way over to the other side.
And of course I'm in the walkingk two, so I'm exhausted by the
time. I'm like, I'm like, can I just the escalators right there?

(01:06:03):
I'll just go right down and I'llbe there. And I'm like They're
like, well, but we don'twant but it's after five or it's after
whatever, so we don't want tohave people stop you. And I'm like,
okay, So I'm literally walking.I mean, you know where the
droid room is. It's basically likethe north end of the building. So
I walked to the south end ofthe building, take the elevator down,

(01:06:24):
and then walk back to the north. Like I took the long way,
the really long way. And myfriend Tim was helpful and he I said,
well, do you want to puppetbad because I want him to be
in the picture, but I cannotdo both at the same time. So
he puppeted bed and kind of croucheddown and put him up, you know,
muppet style. So we get there, we're about to take the photo,

(01:06:46):
but like we're almost posed and ithits seven and seven is when the
floor closes. So guess what happensat seven? They turn off the lights.
Oh, they turn off the mainlights, so it's just the dim
lights. Great for your picture ofdroids. Yeah, So, I mean
we have a picture. It's alittle dim, a little bit of definition

(01:07:11):
lost. But you know, nexttime, we know, take the picture
at six fifty five, not atseven, Like literally like three minutes later.
We were ready, like it wasthat close. And we didn't think
we had to rush because we didn'tthink they were gonna turn the lights off
at seven. But but that wasgreat. That was a lot of fun.
I mean, I don't know ifyou've seen the picture, but there's
like there's a ton of droids init. It's a it's a huge photo.

(01:07:34):
Yeah and uh and yeah. Andwe had the in person drinks and
droids, which is a really coolmoment. So we'd been doing that every
other Saturday for two years where wejust have a zoom call and we're chatting
with other droid builders. So thisis our chance to kind of have an
in person meeting of that. Andwe did a little fun raising and raised

(01:07:57):
a torch to one of our fallencomrades who passed this last year, and
it's just a really nice time, you know again, those those people.
That's what I went to the CONFOwas seeing people. I didn't do a
single panel. I didn't do asingle you know, or barely bought anything
at any store, but because that'swhat it was all about. And yeah,

(01:08:19):
and that leads us to Sunday, and I know where episodes dragging a
little bit, but we're hitting allthese days. So this is what you're
getting, listeners, this is whatyou're getting. Let me throw in one
last thing that happened on Saturday.Yeah, wrap up your Saturday funny.
So, after waiting in the standbyline to see the Mandalorian exhibit, we

(01:08:42):
get in there and it was wonderful, great to see all of these props
up close and personal, but likeeverybody was just it was phones out,
people with gimbals trying to you know, get all you know, all there
not experiencing but document experiencing documenting andkind of being rude about it if I'm

(01:09:05):
being perfectly honest, And of courseyou know, I'm already like I'm not
going to take pictures of this stuffbecause clearly this is annoying me, and
I don't want to. I don'twant to be that guy that I'm annoyed
by. But so we're walking theroom and we're getting to see stuff,

(01:09:26):
and there's definitely some big draws thereand whatnot, and we're kind of at
the end where we feel like, well, you know, we've probably seen
everything to the best of our ability, given how crowded it is, and
you know how many people are takingpictures and whatnot. And then out of
the corner of my eye, Isee a bunch of people start to rush

(01:09:46):
towards one side of the exhibit room. Always a good sign, always a
good sign. Only to see thatit's John Favreau. Of course, so
on favrows there and he's here tocheck everything out, and you know,
like not like, yeah, Ihaven't seen it before, dude, it's

(01:10:08):
like you made half the stuff.I live in Los Angeles. It's not
uncommon you see John for breakfast everyday. Yeah, it's totally totally.
He taps me gently on my shoulderto wake me at that point. Um,
so we kind of my wife andI like look at each other and
I'm like, now is our chancebecause everybody's gone to try and get a

(01:10:30):
picture and enjoy the exam. Wecan go see the things in the exhibit.
That's funny. So we were ableto sort of double back and catch
the things that we weren't able tosee um and take a few photos.
Nice. Yeah, I mean Idid. I did want to bring Bad
in there and look at all thepuppetry, you know, see Bad seventy

(01:10:53):
two. But again it was thesame one, like that's going to be
such a documented room. I Ididn't really feel like I was. It
wasn't worth the two to three hoursof time it would take me to line
and visit and leave that space. And I'm like, I just not on
Saturday. There's too much else goingon and I want to talk about about

(01:11:15):
swag for a little bit. SoI was following some of the swag groups,
which is basically like giving away freestuff. I had a bunch of
stuff I'd lasered up and putting alittle hip pouch, which I wore like
every single day and was the bestpurchase I made for this entire con.
But I got some cool like coins. I got this awesome coin that's like
the yava and metal and it's gotlike the death star. On the other

(01:11:40):
side, someone gave me this likethree D printed it looks like a game
Boy cartridge, but I guess it'slike he's like, I give this costumes
I like, and I'm like, cool, but my favorite piece of free
swag and these mostly just like littletrinkets and patches. But somebody when I'm
walking with K two, unfortunately,I was walking with Tim Um, good

(01:12:01):
old Tim, who was being myhandler and just taking pictures in video because
again I can't really do any ofthat stuff. And that was cool because
Tim was from out of town.I think it's from Delaware, and he
didn't bring a droid, but youknow, obviously hanging with the droid builders
and was And I've been in thatrole too, where it's like I want
to be a support, I wantto help, and you know, I
don't have a droid here, butI can help you. And he was

(01:12:25):
like, I said, a huge, huge help the entire weekend. But
so I'm walking with K two andthis guy's like, hey, dude,
like I love K twos So Imade this K two cereal box here have
one, and it says K twos os um and it's it's it's literally
like on the card stock, likeyou could fold this into a I owed

(01:12:47):
in a frame right now, butyou could fold this into a box.
And I was like, thank you, and it's it's like I love this,
this is this is going on mywall. It was so kind and
clever, and I mean, Iwish I'd been able to have been out
with Ka two a little more.He just took so much time to fix
during the con. But but really, I mean, beating one was so

(01:13:11):
easy. He's so much easier. That's why I went out with him every
single day and Katwo only came outon Saturday. Yeah, but but and
then um oh yeah. And thenfor a second we were talking or I
was talking about the costume contests thatday, and I know a couple of
my friends who entered it. Butthe winner, which I'm so glad she
won because she totally deserved it.This this woman designed a Gianosen drone like

(01:13:39):
the Bug, and it was thisbeautiful costume and all you know, articulate
and covered. I think it waslike mostly foam and paper mache. And
she had kind of those hoof shoeswhere it's like you're walking on the toes
and it looked amazing and It's oneof those things like when that walks into
the room, you're like, oh, that that that's gonna win. Like
that is it's creative, it's unique, it's it looks just like the character.

(01:14:04):
Yeah, and I mean, youknow, there were Lowbots and a
bunch of other cool things. AndI mean costume contests are hard because you're
not really competing on your own merits. You're kind of competing about who you're
competing against, which can be reallytricky. But all that to say,
you know, she won, andI'm really glad you did. I think

(01:14:25):
everyone kind of like was like, yeah, like we we all agree like
that that is the best and hand yeah, and again, some costume
contests are great. A lot ofpeople like those, and Star Wars costumes
are also great to do. Butbut man, can you imagine if like
you just took a random sampling ofthat haul anytime during the con and put

(01:14:47):
them on stage like they're all mastercaliber like everything, Like how do you
judge that? I don't even know, So that's why I avoided it this
year. But again just my ownpersonal preference. But well, like you
said, it is such a hugechunk of your day. It is yeah,

(01:15:08):
they try to streamline it, butit's like you have check in and
then like once you're in, you'rein, and it's like you know,
and i'd meet ups and other funthings to do. So let's see.
So, okay, last day Sunday, Sunday took a little turn. My
daughter ended up getting the flu.So her version of concred from just I

(01:15:29):
mean, three days of Disneyland, and I mean we're not surprised at all.
But we went to Kaiser and shewas fine. You know, they
tested her. It wasn't COVID,which is nice because anything could be COVID
nowadays it's like, can't just bethe flu? Maybe it is, But
so that was my whole morning tojust make sure that that was all running

(01:15:50):
fine and tag teaming it with thewife and then yeah, and then so
I was there in the afternoon justto get those last few five hours of
walking the floor some more and tryingto run into people and just yeah,
it's taking it all in and justhaving a good time and then it's time

(01:16:12):
to break it down. And thenand man, you want to talk about
fast, I guess I guess theNAM show is what was happening next?
Like three days later, so theywere putting up those banners like super fast.
Um. And this is the last, you know piece where Tim's family
saved my butt because literally Saturday afternoon, I'm still putting together the plan of
how I'm getting all my stuff home. I do not have a plan.

(01:16:35):
The plan is my wife takes thekids home after checkout in the hotel and
I have no car and no wayof home. And so I'm like,
hey, buddy, Tim, whoI know has a spacious minivan and maybe
no commitments on Sunday, could youdo me a favor? And again,
his family was super sweet, youknow, because dealing with all of that

(01:16:56):
and check out and all that craziness. But yeah, we broke everything down.
I got everything onto a cart anduh you know, said our goodbyes
and shoved K two us so unceresmoniouslyinto a minivan and gently placed the Imperial
console in the uh you know, because that stuff has to look nice.

(01:17:17):
And they drove me home and itwas all over. And then fortunately the
next day was holiday, so Ididn't have work and I could sleep and
recoup. But man, I feellike I've missed half the stories because there
was just so so many fun things. But I've often said that the twenty
fifteen celebration when it was last outhere in California is literally what I held

(01:17:39):
all cons too. Like that isthe con I judge all cons by,
and this has usurped it by far. It was so much fun seeing people,
and I'm really hoping it comes backhere to California quickly, even if
it's a you know, four yearsinstead of seven, I think that would

(01:18:00):
be nice. I'm guessing because it'sgoing to London next year, I'm guessing
it's going to go like every otherEurope America. That's just a guess.
But my guess is going to belike London next year, and then maybe
Florida, and then maybe Europe again, and then maybe California. So like
the America, one might bounce betweenthe coasts. I don't know, it

(01:18:21):
could really do anything. We don'treally know. They always announced the next
con at the end of the previousone, but I don't know. Maybe
this will get me to travel toFlorida, but traveling to droids is hard.
But BT one is small, sowe'll see. My best guess is
that because they have such a stackedslate of New Star Wars shows coming out

(01:18:47):
that they will do the convention morefrequently than they have in years past.
I think one of the reasons theyhad it they were going to have it
to remember in twenty twenty, andthat was a big shock because usually it
was every two years and it hadbeen in nineteen and I think the reasoning

(01:19:08):
was this all pre COVID, sowe didn't know. But I think the
point was they wanted it in twentybecause twenty one was D twenty three,
their Disney convention, and I thinktheir goal was to try to set it
up on an every other year schedule, so it was always D twenty three
celebration, D twenty three celebration. So I'm assuming they're still gonna go for
that from what i've From what Iknow, this was Reid Pop's last contracted

(01:19:32):
convention unless they renew it and havethem hired on again. I don't know
if it's going to be internally Disneynow after this, but we will see.
I mean, they're definitely not stoppingbecause they announced London next year,
so yeah, but I don't youknow, Yeah, I could think you

(01:19:53):
said, yeah, the focus thisyear, very high, very strong on
I mean little bit on the anniversaryof Clone Wars, but it wasn't really
an anniversary kind of year. Itwas more of a Disney plus like what
is in the pipeline right now?I mean, heck, we had the
premiere of Kenobi. I mean therewas no doubt that that was timed for

(01:20:14):
this this that weekend specifically. Yeah. Yeah, so yeah, we're still
getting a lot of great Star Warsgot a lot of great announcements, and
it's I want to go back. It's it's just something about hanging out with
a bunch of people who just loveStar Wars and just chilling like is great.

(01:20:35):
It was so much fun. Yeah, I'm with you on that.
For me, you know, becauseI didn't really get to actually hang out
with anyone. It was just mywife and I for the whole time.
It was more the feeling of like, this is how I expected Galaxy's Edge

(01:20:59):
to feel. This is a worldI'm entering. It feels like a world
because everything tend to the people arein costume. Yeah, and you know,
it's all varying degrees of costuming, but like everybody there is sort of
playing a part. It's like howWizarding World does it? Like Wizarding World.
Not everybody's in costume, but likeanybody could be in costume. Yeah,

(01:21:26):
and that to me is very interesting. And just knowing that, like
even after four days, the likelihoodof you seeing everything it's like zero percent.
That's not happening. Yeah, So, you know, the last two
weeks have sort of been in thatpost high feeling of like, wow,

(01:21:49):
this is really happening. All ofthese amazing things are in one place.
It's eye candy overload. I knowI can't see everything. I'm going to
do my best to take in asmuch as I can. But then,
thankfully for you know, YouTube andInstagram, TikTok and all that, being

(01:22:10):
able to kind of relive through someoneelse's lens and see the things that you
didn't get a chance to see,and to hear other people's takes on what
they thought the weekend was like, which is also really interesting. Yeah,
I'm glad I didn't try to socialmedia it, Like I mean, yeah,

(01:22:32):
do I wish I'd had a wayor a handler to help take pictures
of people with bad Yeah, becauseI'm I can't at all because I'm strapped
up. But you know, butthat didn't diminish the experience, you know,
it just was a different kind ofexperience. And you know, I
took a photo at the Lego boothwith bead and the Lego bat that was

(01:22:54):
in the little case when they announcedthat, and that was really cool.
That was one of, you know, the best interactions, you know,
because I mean I go over tothe Lego booth and of course it's kids
like kids, right If adults loveBeati, kids love Beady and this little
boy like, literally I can probablycount on one hand the times I've seen

(01:23:14):
a person in real life actually havetheir jaw drop. And this little boy's
jaw like hit the floor and he'slike, you know, because he plays
the game, he knows the character, and here it is real that has
walked around the corner and it isso much fun, so much fun.
Yeah, so Beadi's definitely coming tothe next con with whatever else I build

(01:23:39):
between now and then who who knows, or or whatever else you rebuild rebuild.
Yes, So, what were likeyour big takeaways from from the weekend
as far as the things that youmade to display the stuff that you had
prepared, Like, Yeah, forme, I felt like I bit off

(01:24:01):
just the right amount of costuming thatwasn't uncomfortable to wear and wasn't you know,
clunky. Um. Yeah, Idefinitely banged my shins on some things,
mainly each other. But you know, as far as like knowing how

(01:24:26):
much I thought I could get donein a certain amount of time, given
that I'm sort of pulled in differentdirections, and to do it to a
degree that I was pleased with.I felt like I did a good job
estimating how much time it was goingto take me to accomplish what I want
to accomplished. Now. Of course, the poncho I didn't really have much

(01:24:47):
to do with. You bought it. Yeah, Well, I mean well
I bought a poncho and then youmodified it, Yeah, modified the crow
out of it and made it awesome. I spent some time dirtying it up
and whatnot, rolling around the parkingmark there got totally um. But you

(01:25:12):
know, outside of that, Ifelt like, you know, good job
me for once and being able tosay like, this is what's what I'm
going to do, this is whatneeds to be done, this is when
it needs to be done by andactually sticking to that. You, on
the other hand, had taken onadditional projects that I don't necessarily think we're

(01:25:34):
part of the original scope as youwere starting off, because that's true.
For talking about the control panel forK two, Well, the console will
pop up at the last minute.Well, the console was a necessity because
I needed somewhere to dock him becausehe's not self supporting. He needs somewhere

(01:25:57):
to stand, and I could justhave like a stand, but I'm like,
no, why do that when youcan build an entire bureau console?
And uh no. The things thatadded onto my build list were I actually
ended up fabricating like ten honorary Memberof the Legion plaques for the Rebel Legion

(01:26:19):
and like twenty name badges like theweek before on my laser and I'm happy
to do it, and that wasthat was a fun project to do.
But I'm glad I did it whenI did it, because anytime after that
would have been like nope, Igot no, I got no more time
to run to run that. Yeah. No, the the console was always

(01:26:40):
in the cards. It just ImperialClean is a very different kind of build
because it has to look new andgood and clean, and it was all
vinyl wrap and it's all you know, I'm constantly like dusting it like I
had my clean space. Like, once I finished a piece completely, I
moved it into another room so itdidn't get dust on it. It's not

(01:27:04):
like, oh well that part gota little torn up, but just to
add a little weathering. No,Brian's weathering techniques do not work with Imperial
clean. It does not does notlook good. So yeah, but I'm
really happy with how it turned out. It was. I mean, I
built it strong enough so I coulduse it just as a photo op if
I wanted to in the future. It doesn't have to beat K two's doc,

(01:27:28):
but it has a little beady onesdoc. It's a dual doc,
so they could both sit there. But yeah, so that I don't really
view it as an extra add on. It was more of a necessity,
which again I fully realized now tooka lot of fabrication time away from K
two that I probably should have beenspending on him. But I think,

(01:27:51):
um, yeah, it was youknow, yeah, they're definitely. I
mean there's some things I missed.Would it have been nice to have gone
to the Mando experience, Yeah, like that would have been l or there
was the blast Point podcast panel onSunday that I really wanted to go to.

(01:28:12):
That was the only panel I reallycared about. And by the time
I got to the line, likeit was around the corner, I'm just
like, no, it's not happening. I did have a nice conversation with
people that were like fifty people backin line, and I chat with them
for probably a good twenty minutes, and I'm like, you know what,
I think this is God really well, if they offer to let me join
them in line, I will probablytake them up on it. And they

(01:28:33):
didn't, and I was totally finewith that, and I wasn't expecting it,
but I was like, if thathappens out of this conversation, I'm
wearing a blast Points T shirt. But but no, And again I knew
I could. I mean, Ilistened to the blast Points podcast all the
time, so I wasn't missing missingbut that would have been fun. But

(01:28:53):
I think if I were to doit again, I would some of the
days like I would partner up withanother draw would builder and they would like
drive their R six or R twoand I would have bed one and those
were really fun. I kind ofwanted more of a con buddy that I
could roll with more of the time. I mean, rolling solo is the

(01:29:14):
most flexibility. You can literally dowhatever you want and go wherever you want.
But I think that joy of experiencingit with someone or even just having
someone to take pictures is often anice added bonus. So I would I
would probably try to schedule more ofthat next next time doing it again.

(01:29:35):
You know, while I'm able torun solo with like BD, you know,
that would just be a different wayto enjoy the convention. Yeah,
but besides that, you know, yeah, I mean so many great memories
everybody, Like there was a moment, you know, we kind of joke

(01:29:55):
about the droid hierarchy where it's like, you know, our two's up here,
and then it's like this character andthis character and Wally is like the
trump card, like the ace becausewhen Wally rolls in, like that's the
show stealer. But there was amoment where like R two's right there,
and I walked by and like Rtwo faded, Like BED was more popular

(01:30:17):
than R two for a moment. And part of that, I'm sure is
like it's new and different and interestingand unique, and you know R two
is beloved for sure by definitely alarger group but but I was like,
that's interesting to see bed usurp Rtwo for a moment in time. But

(01:30:40):
but yeah, I don't know ifI do too much different though, because
it was you nothing really broke well. I mean, I wouldn't have my
first time walking with K two bewalking into the con That was that,
you know, that was literally Ihad no choice, but um, but
once I got am most ordered out, he was fine. On Saturday,

(01:31:00):
the harness was way more comfortable.I was able to go a long time
with him, and the camera systemworked fine. All the upgrades worked great.
I wasn't able to finish every upgradeI wanted, but in his head
is still a pain in the butt. But it's sad when I'm looking at
like two hundred dollars in servos sittingon a shelf that didn't get used,

(01:31:21):
and like, I could I couldhave used that money for something else.
But you know, I will eventuallyput it in. It's it's not lost,
it's just delayed. But a futureDarren can get his act together and
get everything done in a proper timebefore next celebration, because who knows,

(01:31:45):
with my luck, they'll say okayat the end of Star Wars celebration.
So I's gonna say Florida. Atthe end of London, They'll be like,
Okay, where's it going next?Back to California's like, oh no,
no, I only of one yearwhen I thought I had like three.
But yeah, so I don't know. Maybe I'll start twitch streaming or

(01:32:06):
doing more regular evenings to just progress, take a bite at a time and
just get through it all. Butyeah, but I mean definitely the convention
I now compare all others too,and it's again, it's a convention that's
all about Star Wars. It's aconvention the size of a comic con that

(01:32:29):
has one property. I mean,that's that's amazing. That's it's so much
fun. Yeah, it's hard togo wrong, it really is. And
I mean, unless you're not intoStar Wars. Yeah, yeah, they
don't go to the Star Wars convention. You are listening to the wrong episode.
But you know, and the cosplay, like you said, it was
so good and everybody's so kind andasking questions and being like can I take

(01:32:55):
your picture or like you know, can you know? And just I don't
know. It was like we're alljust relishing in the glow of a job
well done, like all the hardwork is paid off. This is that
part of a build where like you'rejust getting the accolades and you're just getting

(01:33:16):
the acknowledgement and the wow, thatlooks really impressive and wow, like I
can't believe you built that, andit's you know, it's hard to stay
humble for those four days. I'mnot gonna lie, But there's nothing wrong
in taking that part of the buildcycle and letting it be its natural.
Course, that is part of thebuild circle. Is the is the praise

(01:33:40):
once you've actually finished it, youknow, as long as you don't act
like a jerk and let it allgo to your head, like, it's
totally fine. But like I wassaying with the Consplay contest winner, like
yeah, like, of course sheshould get accolades. Of course she should
be praised because she did an amazingwork. So why would we not praise
that. And when you bring yourbest work forward and people recognize it,

(01:34:03):
that's that's natural, that's healthy.Yeah, but yeah, so they'll definitely
But yeah, fun rolling with thedroid builders. There's always a lot of
fun with them. And but yeah, rolling with a con buddy or even
just having a maybe like a daywhere I just pick a spot and park

(01:34:27):
it and it's like, hey,I'm gonna for the next three hours,
I'm K two and I are gonnabe here, Come and say hi.
Like I had plans to do thatand make up like social media banners and
things I could post and whatnot andbe like, hey, Kto's gonna be
here, but it just all it'shard. You almost need like a team
or like a social media manager sometimes. And I just said, you know

(01:34:50):
what, my phone battery is gonnadie if I just stay on social all
day. So I'm just gonna putthat off until the evenings and after the
con on and just like you, like you guys in the Mando experience,
it just be in the moment andjust enjoy it. Because yeah, pictures
are great, and I took aton of pictures, but there's been so

(01:35:12):
many albums, like full albums onFacebook now where you can just be like
I like that picture, and Ilike that picture, and you just put
them in your own album and nowyou can remember the event as if as
if you took all of those.Yeah. I think one other thing that
was really neat for me was seeingthings that I've just been seeing the process

(01:35:34):
of online in person, so like, yes, I've been watching Michael McMaster
building a probe droid that's life size. Oh my gosh, the probe thing
comes humming up behind you. Yeah, you don't realize just how intimidating that
thing. It's hue it the reason, do you know the reason why?
It was on the floor the entiretime. It would not fit in the

(01:35:56):
droid room. It could go upthe s it could go up the elevator,
but it was too tall to fitthrough the doors. It was not
too wide, but it was likeI think it was like eight and a
half feet tall and the doors oreight feet so it could not fit.
So they're like, well, we'regonna stay on the main floor the entire
time, and which is totally fine. Well, and honestly, the droid

(01:36:18):
room was full. It was somuch to see. And I don't know
where I heard the number one sixtyeight thrown out a number of droids we
had there, and I didn't countmyself, but I would not be surprised
if there was that many. Therewas a lot of druids. Yeah,

(01:36:38):
well, yeah, we could keeptalking. We could keep talking for hours
and I feel like, you know, we're as I'm looking at the counter
now, one hour thirty seven minutesinto this podcast. I feel like that
makes up for us not having podcasts. It's like a double episode. It
is. It is. We'll beback next week with our regularly scheduled programming

(01:37:03):
where we talk about making things, just about enjoying looking at things that other
people have made. No, that'strue, but like I said, this
is part of the process. Theit's done and you get to show it
off is a fun part that oftenwe don't talk about. It's usually the
workbench part that we talk about. All six inches of it's I'm looking at

(01:37:27):
my desk and it's still still justthose last six inches. It's all I
got. I'm grabbing a ruler rightnow to see what where I'm at here.
I have my keyboard and sometimes I'llmove that, but like it's literally
like fourteen by six, Like thisis the workable space on my entire desk,
and I have a Lego set herejust sitting here. I don't need

(01:37:47):
a Lego set here, but hey, why not? It's just I guess
it doesn't matter. Now we canall put our rooms back together. It's
been two weeks and still getting pieceback because you want to talk about con
crunch floor. Eventually you reach apoint where you're like, it's just going
on the floor. I don't evencare. It's just trash can. Ha,

(01:38:10):
The entire floor is a trash can. Doesn't even the future Darren's problem.
He's going to clean this up.Present Darren is crunching and not sleeping.
So all right, well, yeah, it was awesome chatting about this.
I'm glad we both got to experienceit. And yeah, and maybe

(01:38:30):
a Wonder Con we'll hit up.I Wonder Con is another really good one.
The same convention center happens earlier inthe year, but now that you're
a seasoned cosplay congoer will have tohave to get you out there a little
more if it's hither up for it? All right, Well, Derek,
if someone wanted to check out yourfew pictures of the mandaroom, where would

(01:38:56):
they go? The limited number ofphotos that I took and have shared can
be found on Instagram at van OaksProps. And I'm also putting out videos
every weekend over on YouTube at vanOaks Props. And how about you,
Darren, Well, if they wantto see bed one appear. They just
have to go on social media andhe's anywhere on the internet areas. But

(01:39:25):
they can go to doctor sci Fidot com. I still have not put
together a compilation from Celebration. Ido plan on doing that, but I'll
definitely also put a link to thiswebsite to this episode, because this is
what I've been wanting to record asa nice chat with a friend about some
of those stories, because it's hardto tell all of them, but these

(01:39:45):
are the these are the main onesof my time at Celebration. But yeah,
but they can go to doctor sciFi dot com Dr sci Fi and
you can listen to this and manyother great shows here on the Nerdy Party
Network each week. Even if youskip two months, it's still worth checking
out every single week from a varietyof shows. But thanks again for listening.

(01:40:09):
As we've chatted about this convention.Like Derek said, we'll be back
to our regularly makred schedule next week. But time to you rested up from
con crunch, so it's time tokeep making
