Speaker 1 (00:02):
It's the best way to start your NFL Sunday welcoming
over to back to Sunday Morning Slams. Your host Matt
Watson joined alongside Mason, Pat and Kyle. How we doing tonight, gents,
I'd better I know no intro video testing something out.
Let me know in the comments if you miss it,
because I do. So tonight, Yeah, tonight, we're gonna be

(00:23):
talking about the NFC North and who we think is
going to be the division champ this year and so
last year, just a little bit of a recap, the
Detroit Lions went fifteen and two in route to a
division title. They beat the Minnesota Vikings, who went fourteen
and three in the final week of the season to
win the division, as the Green Bay Packers finished third

(00:44):
also made the playoffs with three teams in the playoffs
from the NFC North. Last year on the Chicago Bears
finished five and twelve in Caleb Williams's rookie season. As
we all know, all three of the North teams lost
in their first round matchup in the playoffs. Packers lost
the Eagles, the Lions lost to the Commanders, and the
Vikings lost to the Rams. The Vikings moves off of
Sam Donald and are going with JJ McCarthy, who they

(01:07):
drafted last year and missed the entire season due to
the torn ecl So Sam Donald's now a Seahawk, the
Vikings practically a rookie quarterback taking over. Jordan Love remains
in Green Bay, Caleb Williams in year two for the Bears,
and of course Jared Goff in Detroit for the Lions.
So we're gonna be talking about tonight and you know,
to kick things off, we'rena see it. Will the Detroit

(01:29):
Lions repeat as division champs? So Kyle, I'm gonna start
with you tonight. The Lions practically ran rough shot over
the league last year, but we're losing guys towards the
end of the season, kind of slowed their momentum. Do
you think the Lions will repeat his division champs in
the North.

Speaker 2 (01:44):
The Lions are an interesting team because last year at
the end of the season, it was basically like like
that eighteen year old dog that you don't really know
how it's still alive, but it just keeps going and
you're like, how is this even possible? Because they had
like twenty three dudes on injured re injury reserve by
Week eighteen, but they still want a bunch of games,

(02:06):
So like, ideally they'll have better injury luck this year
because a lot of those injuries were just freak accidents,
like when agent Aiden Hutchinson just collided with another teammate's
leg and.

Speaker 3 (02:16):
His leg just exploded.

Speaker 2 (02:18):
Like that's not something you'll see often, So like, hopefully
they have better or a positive injury regression, or they'll
have less overall injuries. But then you pair that with
the fact that they lost both coordinators, and depending on
how you view Ben Jonson and Aaron Glenn, that could
be a pretty big deal because last time we saw
this happen was with the Eagles, and the Eagles after

(02:38):
that were not the best.

Speaker 3 (02:40):
So it's tough to know specifically.

Speaker 2 (02:44):
Like I think Jumior Gibbs and David Montgomery are just
a crazy one two punch. I think Gibbs could be
top three running back in the league, maybe top two
honestly in that system. He could probably have the best
running back season this year, even over saquon the end.
But I don't know, man, it's just losing both coordinators

(03:05):
and they're in a crazy division right three teams made
the playoffs last season, Bears got better. Packers, they were
one of the youngest teams in the league, so they'll
obviously get a little better, and you have the Vikings,
so it's tough. I think there's a lot of variables.
But I do think with the positive injury regression and
the crazy offensive weapons, we will see the Lions repeat.

Speaker 1 (03:28):
Okay, okay, so Kyle's gonna stick with the Lions. Mason
will throw it over to you. So, you know, Kyle
highlighted the loss of both coordinators for Detroit, but then
you know obviously mentioned that the injuries could be in
their favor in a sense this year. Do you kind
of think of the same way with the you know,
with the Lions that they say healthy that it's their
division to lose, or do you feel as though another
one of the teams can kind of compete with them

(03:50):
this year?

Speaker 4 (03:51):
Yeah, I think that pretty much covers it.

Speaker 5 (03:53):
Like the the coordinators are just going to be what's
gonna cause the Lions to regress? Now they now, even
with all the injuries last year, they still won fifteen games,
So do I think it's that much of a regression
that they're going to lose the division probably not. Also,
I know it's a tough division and a lot of
these teams are probably going to be good, but there's

(04:15):
also just a lot of question marks. I guess the
most sure thing this year would be the Packers, But
the Bears, I mean, did not look that great last year,
and obviously the new head coach and Caleb Wims coming
in the year two, you would expect them to take
a step forward, But are they really I don't know
how many games the Bears won last year, five and
twelve last year, so five wins, So are they really

(04:36):
going to take that leap and take the division crown?

Speaker 4 (04:39):
I do not think so.

Speaker 5 (04:40):
And the Vikings, I mean, I see some people crowning
JJ McCarthy is like God's greatest gift already when he
hasn't thrown an NFL pass, So that's a huge question
mark for them as well. So I could see the
Vikings taking a step back. So I guess in total,
I think the Lions are still going to win the division,

(05:01):
but I do.

Speaker 4 (05:02):
Still see them taking a step back this year.

Speaker 5 (05:04):
I think probably eleven wins is enough to win this
division this.

Speaker 4 (05:08):
Year, and unless.

Speaker 5 (05:11):
I don't know another they're crazy like Vikings out of nowhere,
But I think that'll be enough to get it done,
and I think the Lions can reach that point pretty easily.

Speaker 1 (05:20):
Yeah, it's interesting what you said about the Vikings because
a lot of people are giving JJ McCarthy a lot
of hype for a guy who hasn't played a game
in the NFL yet. Obviously, last year's quarterback class was
very highly thought of and it kind of turned out
that way as the season progressed. The thing with the
Vikings for me is that you just have one of
the best seasons in your franchise of history. You will

(05:40):
win away from the division title and you would have
had a first round by Obviously, that changes the landscape
of the playoffs. And because of that, like maybe if
they beat Detroit, they find themselves in NATATY Championship game,
like they were really just one game away. They ended
up obviously, you know, they played the Rams in Arizona

(06:00):
to the Wildfires, so they had a weird situation there
and I still think they were the better team and
they just ended up losing. But you let go of
Sam Donald, who really became the guy that everybody expected
Sam Donald to be when he was getting drafted. When
the Jets took him, I believe it was third overall
in that year's draft. Everybody expected Sam Donald to be,
you know, the best quarterback in that class. Obviously Baker

(06:22):
goes number one of the Browns. You know, I believe
it's the same year. But yeah, that was the Josh
Allen draft too, right, and then Lamar went late in
the first round. No, there was five quarterback or its
five quarterbacks. It was Baker, Donald, Lamar was.

Speaker 3 (06:38):
At that class was in that class.

Speaker 1 (06:40):
Too, Josh Rosen. I'm trying to I thought that Josh.

Speaker 2 (06:44):
Allen, Josh Rosen, what a blast from the past. I
was a big Josh Rosen guy.

Speaker 1 (06:51):
Oh man, But like Donald finally broke out. He finally
was the quarterback everybody had hoped he would be when
he was coming out of college. And I just think that,
you know, Kevin O'Connell's done a great job with the Vikings,
regardless of who he's had under center. I would have
just stuck with Donald. I mean, you just won fourteen
games last year, you went to the playoffs. I would
try and build on that. I know you drafted JJ

(07:12):
McCarthy to be the future, but you're hoping that he
matches the season that Donald just had. You just saw
the guy, you know, perform. He let him walk out
the door for I mean for nothing at that point.
So and he stays in the conference going to the Seahawks.
So I don't know, I feel as though they made
a mistake letting Sam Donald walk and McCarthy could turn
out to be a really great quarterback. But you know,

(07:34):
in his final year at Michigan, he was known for
handing the ball off like the whole Maines just ran
over everybody. It wasn't like he was lighting up the
world passing. You know. This wasn't like Joe Burrow when
he was coming out of the draft. McCarthy was known
for being a system quarterback. And while I think he's
in a good system with the Vikings, you know, I
just would have gone with Donald. I think there's more
potential there. So Pat, I'll throw it over to you.

(07:55):
Do you think the Lions are gonna repeat? Is the
VIN champs? And what kind of obstacles you see them
come their way this season?

Speaker 6 (08:02):
Yeah? I think this one's tough. I really honestly, when
I look at the NFC North, I see a two
horse race you know, I'll start by talking about the Vikings.
JJ McCarthy, Yeah, a talented college player at Michigan, but
kind of lack that deep ball accuracy that you're kind
of looking for, especially when you're talking about like j Jettas,

(08:24):
like he's gonna burn guys down the field, and you
want somebody that has the chemistry and the ability to
launch the ball and get it to Justin Jefferson especially.
I mean, they have Jordan Ddison. He's gonna be suspended
the first few games of the season, but those are
two guys who can go deep. And you want a
quarterback who's confident throwing in the league and throwing the
ball deep, and I just don't see a lot of

(08:45):
that in JJ McCarthy's game. With that being said, I
think it's just gonna be a learning year for him.
You're learning an NFL offense, you're learning an NFL playbook,
you're reading defenses. So I don't think the Vikings are
going to do horrible, but I don't think that gonna
win the division. I certainly don't think the Bears are
gonna win the division with Kayleb Williams. I mean, the Bears,

(09:06):
it's the tale as old as time, the Bears being bad.
Uh in today's modern, modern game, modern age, you know,
they've I mean, there's nobody really on the team on
the roster that stands out outside of like DJ Moore
DeAndre Swift who just feels like I actually know all
of mine's a chas is there? Never mind, let me
let me take that back. There's some players that stick out,

(09:30):
but uh, oh case keenums. By the way, I just
learned that Alami Day is a key is my bad.
So there's just nobody on their roster that sticks out
as like this is star power. And then we get
to the Green Bay Packers and you see a wide
receiver corps that's already been devastated by injuries through the
first couple of weeks of training camp, and so it's like,

(09:50):
can they keep that young core healthy. They've got some
dynamic players there, and I think they're gonna be fun
to watch. But in my eyes, when when you look
at the Packers is kind of the air offense versus
when you look at the Lions, it's that ground and
pound like kind of was talking about with two of
the best running backs in the league. So I have
I have the Packers and the Lions fighting for it.

(10:12):
But I ultimately think the Lions are gonna come come
out on the top. You know, they have an experienced
quarterback and Jerry Goff. They just have a deadly running
back corps, and then they have a great receiving corps
Maros Saint Brown, Jamison Williams, Samuel Corda who had a
great season last season. So I do have the Lions
taking this one. But I think you're gonna see some

(10:33):
good things out of the Green Bay Packers if they
can stay healthy.

Speaker 1 (10:36):
Yeah, so I would agree with that because I honestly
think the Packers are gonna win the division this year.
I think they're gonna upset the Lions in that sense.
The thing with Green Bay so last year they start
the season against the Eagles in Brazil. Weird way to
start the year, and on like the last play of
the game, Jordan Love gets injured and he ended up
missing the next couple of weeks. The Packers did win

(10:57):
those games. Yeah, Milik Willis came in and played well,
But I don't think that Jordan Love ever got settled
last year. I think I think after that, I mean,
he had a solid year but I just think that
he was turning the ball over a little bit more
than I feel like he did the year prior, and
I just don't think he took the next step like
a lot of people were expecting. So, you know, not

(11:18):
going wood. You know, if he remains healthier on the year,
I think that allow him to get in more of
a groove and allow him to play better. Another thing
with the Packers last year is they went they had
one win in the division, they split with the Bears,
lost both games with the Vikings, in both games to
the Lions. I just don't see that happening again. It's tough, yeah,
I mean, and obviously the Vikings and the Lions were

(11:39):
great teams, so it's not like they were losing, you know,
bad teams in that regard.

Speaker 4 (11:46):
They have six losses. That means they only lost one
game out of division.

Speaker 2 (11:49):
So if they were one and five in the division
and then they only lost to the Eagles outside of
the division.

Speaker 4 (11:54):
That is die a Bolla call.

Speaker 1 (11:57):
Yeah, so you gotta take the division probably gonna regress,
so you should pick up a couple wins there and
then obviously we're not gonna sweep the rest of your
schedule at that point. But I just think the Packers
are a really solid team, and I like the weapons
they have. The drafted Matthew Golden from Texas in the
first round, a wide receiver, first time they've taken a
receiver in the first round. I think, like ever, to
add to the core that they already had, which they

(12:19):
had a lot of number two guys in my opinion,
last year they didn't have a true number one, but
they had a lot of complimentary wide receivers. So I
think they envisioned Golden being in number one wide out
and the rest of the guys kind of, you know,
following suit. So it'll be interesting, say, like Pap did
mention that, like all the wide receivers are injured right
now in preseason, so we'll see who rolls out in
Week one. But you know, I think I'm gonna go

(12:40):
with the Green Bay Packers. And another thing too, I
do think that the Packers have the best quarterback in
the division. I do think that Jordan Love is the
most talented, and he might not be the most accomplished
because that'll be golf, but I do think Jordan Love
is the best quarterback in the division. What do you
guys think about that.

Speaker 2 (12:57):
I think it's gonna be Caleb Williams. I'm bas few
so much Bears propaganda. I think, all right, well, I
think there's some Bears haters in here and think, oh
the old Bears. Caleb Williams did not have a bad
season last year. He had thirty five hundred yards, twenty
passing touchdowns, only six picks. Now you might say that

(13:18):
isn't the best, that's kind of average, but I counter
with he didn't even have a coach to go over
a film with him. They just gave him the things
and said, all right, good luck, pal. So the Bears
did nothing to oversee his development. That organization was running
like a disaster. So now we get Ben Johnson in there,
who's a known architect of offense, so he's really going

(13:41):
to get the most out of Caleb Williams. So then, okay,
we have Caleb Williams and we have Ben Johnson. Now
what else did we do? They added Joe Toney in
the interior All Pro offensive guard when he's not playing
tackle going against the goat, and Holden Smith when he's
actually inside playing his regular position.

Speaker 3 (13:59):
He's good.

Speaker 2 (14:00):
And they overhauled the other two positions inside, and they
also have dorn Out right on the tackle, so their
O line will be a lot better. And then we
look at their weapons. Not only do they have Luther Burden,
who they just drafted, they also have Colston Lovelin to
go along with rom Adonza, who was in Shane Waldron
prison last year. When you look at JSN year one
to year two, after he left the Waldron offense, he exploded,

(14:23):
so I think Rome Dunsa is gonna do the same thing.
So then you have crazy weapons almost on Detroit level.
Wide receiver running back wise, not at all. DeAndre Swift,
he's serviceable, but he's nowhere near Jamir Gibbs Kyle Mnongai
though Ruckers legend.

Speaker 3 (14:39):
Are you he might be the best one out.

Speaker 2 (14:41):
Of anyone Ben Johnson's ever had it, But other than
him running backs nothing the write home about. And then
their defense is going to be average, which is fine.
So I think the Bears could surprise a lot of people.
And if I depict someone upset the lines, it would
be the Bears.

Speaker 1 (14:58):
Okay, who finishes last.

Speaker 4 (15:01):
The Bears do have the third hardest schedule projected.

Speaker 3 (15:05):
Are you serious?

Speaker 6 (15:06):
Even with the N because they're playing in like a
gauntlet of a division.

Speaker 2 (15:10):
Oh yeah, that's the NFC East and then the fucking
that might change.

Speaker 4 (15:14):
The Lions do have the second though, so you.

Speaker 1 (15:16):
Know, I guess who has the hardest is that? Is it?
Green Bay?

Speaker 6 (15:21):
Uh?

Speaker 4 (15:21):
Looks like the Giants.

Speaker 2 (15:24):
Giants got screwed, dude, because they play does don't doesn't?

Speaker 3 (15:29):
Doesn't the NFC East play the NFC North?

Speaker 4 (15:32):
Uh?

Speaker 1 (15:35):
I know they played the West, the West, I think
the North.

Speaker 2 (15:39):
Yeah, So so they get the two best divisions. So
Giants are eating good.

Speaker 3 (15:43):
They they're getting danger which you have the Danger which
coming in New York. Yeah. But who finishes last? I
don't know, man.

Speaker 2 (15:53):
I mean, whoever finishes last is probably gonna be like
freaking ten and six. It's hard to tell, but I
would say the Packers at nine and seven.

Speaker 1 (16:06):
Wow, so you're gonna go Lions, Bears, Vikings Packers.

Speaker 3 (16:11):
Yeah, yep.

Speaker 2 (16:12):
I'm big Caleb Williams guy. I think he gets a
lot of ship for no reason. Well, there's obviously some reasons,
but I think he's overheted. I think he's overheted. I
think he had a decent rookie season all things, probably.

Speaker 5 (16:28):
A little over shadowed by Jade Daniels too, exactly the Bears.

Speaker 4 (16:32):
Yeah, when you.

Speaker 2 (16:33):
Have a bunch of god rookies taking the field like
Bo Nicks and Jason Daniels, it's got hard when you
have above average season a bunch.

Speaker 4 (16:40):
Of slop around you too.

Speaker 5 (16:42):
At least those are all guys are on competent esque teams.

Speaker 1 (16:45):
Yeah, led all rookies and touchdowns just exactly Daniels.

Speaker 2 (16:51):
They're lighting it up. Caleb Williams is dealing with a
freaking nineteen eighties Corolla with no wheels. So like, but
Nick's got the best defense in the league, right, So like,
I don't know, I think the Bears can have a
big season.

Speaker 6 (17:10):
Every other.

Speaker 4 (17:13):
But I do agree. I just don't know if it's
as much of a jump to take the division.

Speaker 2 (17:18):
I don't know about division, but I think they're not
going to be scrubs anymore.

Speaker 1 (17:22):
So do you guys think that the Bears can make
the playoffs? Is that your line the playoffs division?

Speaker 5 (17:29):
That would be to me, that would be like every
one in that division have to make the playoffs.

Speaker 6 (17:35):
So you think they're Do you think they're finishing fourth Mason?
That would that would realistic?

Speaker 5 (17:44):
That all of those teams have ten wins. I mean,
like I I know the division is gonna beat up
on it. They're gonna have to beat up on each other.
But like to me, those all seem like the Bears
would be the biggest stretch. I guess, but like I
I mean, if everything goes well for the Bears, they
could win ten games, and I think all the other
teams are more than capable of winning ten games.

Speaker 3 (18:03):
Yeah, because this is gonna be determined by injuries. Which
teams get bad?

Speaker 5 (18:07):
What was the what was the worst team last year
with the seven game like normally nine wins is like
that last seed, right, depending on depending on the year.

Speaker 2 (18:16):
Yeah, I mean last year it was like eleven so
oh really Yeah, Packers were the seventh seed with like
eleven wins. Yeah, Commies went twelve and five, and then the.

Speaker 1 (18:27):
And the Broncos were the seventh seed and they were
ten and seven. So you have to get at least
ten wins.

Speaker 6 (18:32):
Now, the Broncos won ten games last year, Yes, sir, geez,
everybody was winning ten games. Never mind, maybe the Bears
can do it this year. I didn't realize that.

Speaker 1 (18:47):
Yeah, Like we're trailing ten to seven. To Buffalo at
the half to say.

Speaker 6 (18:52):
I do think that I think that the Vikings are
gonna be the worst. Actually, well, I don't know. The
Bears might be worse than the Vikings, but I really
do think that things are not going to have a
good season this year.

Speaker 1 (19:02):
I agree McCarthy.

Speaker 5 (19:03):
I do think the year with JJ, the gap year
with JJ McCarthy is kind of taken away.

Speaker 4 (19:08):
Like I feel like I see so many people talking about.

Speaker 3 (19:10):
How great J. J.

Speaker 5 (19:11):
McCarthy is going to be, and like it took Matt
reiterating that he literally just handed the ball off Initigan
for me to be like, McCarthy gonna be good.

Speaker 2 (19:19):
Yeah, I'm not a big jam but so I really
have no idea what the fuck I'm talking about in terms.

Speaker 1 (19:26):
Of I mean, like, I'm not going to see him.
Pretend like I watch every weekend of college football, but
I don't know. I remember in that national championship run,
I wasn't very I was not a big going in
the first round.

Speaker 6 (19:37):
Was just maybe Donovan Edwards right.

Speaker 1 (19:42):
Edwards, another guy. So it was his junior year. In
fifteen games, he threw for two hundred or two ninety
one yards.

Speaker 6 (19:51):
Williams beat that and he was on the big stats.

Speaker 1 (19:55):
He threw college twenty two touchdowns, four interceptions, and then
let me just let's see.

Speaker 6 (20:01):
I want to know. I want to know his deep
ball percentage.

Speaker 1 (20:05):
Four reference Joe Burrow and his senior year through sixty
touchdown passes, six interceptions for five thousand, six and seven
one yards.

Speaker 4 (20:13):
That's that. That's the that's the.

Speaker 6 (20:15):
What about Jamis? Pull the Jamis stats up.

Speaker 1 (20:19):
Let's see Jamis in college?

Speaker 6 (20:22):
Yeah, what was the West Virginias.

Speaker 1 (20:24):
James Is Florida, Florida college football pod. Jamis Winston through
for thirty nine hundred yards, twenty five touchdowns, eighteen interceptions
even in college.

Speaker 3 (20:38):
I love that. Yeah, last last gun slinger we've ever seen.

Speaker 1 (20:44):
For thirty season. Eat the w that's what they'll call it.
But okay, so yeah, I mean he's getting what I
want to know. He's that The Browns Broncos Monday night
football game is the greatest is the greatest example of
a Jamis Winston led football team, because the Browns were

(21:04):
bawling that night. I think Jerry Judy had like two
hundred yards.

Speaker 4 (21:08):
I remember that he had like forty fantasy points for
me that week. I was like what the hell's going on?

Speaker 1 (21:13):
But at the end, in fact, let me let me
pull his stats from that game, because I mean that
was one I think that was like the best, one
of the best prime time games of the year year.

Speaker 3 (21:26):
That was electric. He just kept going, he kept getting yards.

Speaker 1 (21:31):
Let's see, let's check out this boxer with the Broncos
won that game for reference forty one to thirty two.
Jamis had four hundred and ninety seven passing yards, four touchdowns,
three picks.

Speaker 4 (21:42):
In the snow too right, wasn't it snowing for some
of it?

Speaker 1 (21:45):
I think it did snow a little bit.

Speaker 6 (21:47):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (21:47):
Bro, he's gonna be electric on the Giants. If he
plays Milake Nighbors, is gonna have three hundred fucking yards.

Speaker 1 (21:53):
Yeah. No, that's gonna be a fun team to watch.
Russ Jamis, Tommy Devido is still there and they have
Jackson really still quarterbacks. He might go to the practice squad,
but yeah, they did bring him back.

Speaker 6 (22:07):
So Matt, you were you were right earlier, by the way,
Baker Darnold Allen Rosen Lamar twenty eighteen NFL.

Speaker 3 (22:15):
Draft, What a crazy what at QB?

Speaker 6 (22:19):
What is Josh Rosen?

Speaker 1 (22:20):
Josh Roseen updated his LinkedIn last time I checked. So
that's how things are gone for He's.

Speaker 2 (22:25):
Not even dude, he's he's I don't even think he
made it through his rookie contract.

Speaker 6 (22:29):
Dude. His middle name was his middle name was Ballinger.
He's destined to be great.

Speaker 1 (22:35):
And he was destined to be great. Yeah, Carlins dumped
him after like one season for Kyle Oh he's.

Speaker 6 (22:41):
At Wharton now, never mind, I remember that.

Speaker 3 (22:43):
Now.

Speaker 1 (22:44):
Good for Josh Rosen. I hope you're doing. If you're
listening to podcast episode, best of luck to you.

Speaker 6 (22:50):
