Speaker 1 (00:05):
Live across the Great Lake State. You're connected to Michigan's
most engaging and influential radio and television program, Michigan's Big
Show starring Michael Patrick Shields, presented by Blue Cross, Blue
Shield of Michigan and Blue Care Network.
Speaker 2 (00:20):
I'm producer and creative director Tony Cuthberts.
Speaker 1 (00:23):
Now in the shadow of the Capitol Dome and Lansing.
He's heard from the beaches of Lake Michigan, to the
halls of power and behind closed doors. Here's Michigan's Michael
Patrick Shields.
Speaker 3 (00:36):
The only thing I have to say, Michael, is the
last time we talked, when one of us was overseas,
you were in a pub in Ireland, and I don't
think there's a pub within about a couple thousand miles
of this place. And next time I'm going to Ireland
and calling you from the.
Speaker 4 (00:50):
Puff Don Beer.
Speaker 3 (00:53):
Seven o'clock in the morning, Scotch isn't happy hour anytime
Michael patrick Shields is on the air.
Speaker 5 (01:02):
Good morning world, Cheers from Michael patrick Shields, La Batchasia, Kontutivoi.
Everybody's welcome, And as Father Jake used to say, Salo
Diicky Bevy, here's to those who drink It's Michael Patrick
shields with you. Business leaders from Michigan is united by
an ambitious goal to make Michigan a top ten state
(01:25):
for jobs and talent and a thriving economy. And business
leaders from Michigan has talked lately about innovation, innovation being
central to Michigan's story. They say what's needed for our
state is a unified vision and collective action that draws
more talent and increases investment and creates a healthy pipeline
(01:45):
of scalable companies. And if you look in West Michigan,
you'll connect the dots here because craft Co and the
Cropper Craft Diskillery is absolutely one of those innovative companies.
And Ali Anderson is the CEO of craft Co and
the Coppercraft Distillery and cheese on our AT and T
line right now our radio stage, cheers and welcome back
(02:07):
to the program.
Speaker 4 (02:09):
Well, thank you very much, good morning, great to be here.
Jan thank you.
Speaker 5 (02:12):
I was curious to get your opinion this week because
Governor Whitmer signed a public act and one of the
bills allows distilleries and mixed spirit manufacturers to have the
same ability as wineries and breweries to use the same
space and equipment to make their products, and that passed
(02:32):
the House and the Senate unanimously. What does that mean
to your operation?
Speaker 4 (02:37):
If anything, Well, it's wonderful news for us, you know.
I think anytime you've got a unanimous bill passing, I
think that's something we can all agree on because what
does that mean. It means red tape has been cut,
and that's good for business. It's certainly good for craft Co.
And what it does for us is it allows us
(02:57):
to share our space and our equipment to lower barriers
of entry for other businesses. And what that does is
it enables innovation, does other entrepreneurs a fighting chance all
across Michigan. So we're thrilled to see it.
Speaker 5 (03:12):
Coppercraft obviously led the way as your initial product, but
craft Co has become much more than that. When we
talk about various products, can you give us sort of
a scope and a lay of the land of what's
happening there in West Michigan and how we can access
it in the various ways.
Speaker 4 (03:28):
I'm so excited for that. We are we started as Coppercraft.
I think met much of Michigan knows us as Coppercraft,
Craftsco really is encompasses several other Michigan brands.
Speaker 3 (03:38):
We have Joseph.
Speaker 4 (03:39):
Magnus at the high end, luxury end of the bourbon spectrum,
and of course we've got Coppercrafts there. We've got Flying Eights,
which is a wonderful you know, I think we're all
really price sensitive right now, all across the nation, and
so Flying Ace really is a very high quality whiskey
for a really great price. It's underd thirty dollars, so
(03:59):
it's got that. We've got organic liquors as well. And
you know we're based on the Lake Shore and Holland, Michigan,
so you can come on out. We're reopening our tap
room called the Craft Coo Social House on September sixteenth,
so people will be able to come out and explore
all of the brands. We've got really grown over the past,
you know, five six, seven, eight.
Speaker 5 (04:17):
Years really And where is that facility when it reopens.
Speaker 4 (04:24):
We are in Holland on one twentieth Avenue, so you
can't miss us, right off Waverley and we're going to
be opening soon. We've got fresh paint on the walls
and it's going to look great. Made a bunch of
new hires. So lo's of a good job creation going on.
Speaker 5 (04:39):
To wow, congratulations on that. We appreciate that some to
the good. And you know, people they like these authentic
experiences now where they can go and taste the thing
and connect with it, you know where it's being made.
That's that's important for tourism, isn't it.
Speaker 4 (04:57):
Absolutely get to know the people that are making the
product that you enjoy, discover something new and you know what,
even if you choose not to enjoy spirits, come on
out and hang out with friends.
Speaker 5 (05:08):
I asked my friend Frank Gulielmi, who's the PR director
for the Meyer Corporation, I said, you have copper craft
and craft Co products And not only did he answer me,
he went and took pictures and he said, we've got
their products all over the place. So that's one of
the locations too that you can get craft Co products.
And it looks like in the news also today Ali
(05:29):
Anderson that the City of Zealand is considering alcohol sales
on Sunday. It was twenty years ago they lifted their prohibition.
But they're like one of the only dry communities left
and so you might be able to move some product
on a Sunday in nearby Zealand. So that's good and
everything's from everything's coming up roses today, isn't it.
Speaker 4 (05:48):
I know there's a lot of things to celebrate on
a Sunday, a lot of families getting together. So I'm
all for that. Absolutely.
Speaker 5 (05:55):
Let me ask you this now, all this news about
Russia in and so some people might say, you know what,
I think my own personal protest is, I'm not going
to drink Russian vodka anymore, no more slowly or smearnov
or any of that. Does Craft Co have a vodka
product we can turn to to not only not drink
(06:15):
Russian vodka, but support Michigan too.
Speaker 4 (06:19):
Absolutely. I have to say I would raise a glass
to that any day. We do. We have two kinds
of vodka. Coppycraft Citrus Poda is really really good if
you like something just a little bit fresher, and then
we've got organic vodka with thatchers So if you if
you tend toward more of the of that kind of lifestyle,
we've got something to cover that too. And it's it's
(06:41):
all American corn as well. So yeah, there's there's no U,
no Russian vodka behind our doors. For sure.
Speaker 5 (06:50):
Well, what if somebody walked into Craft co and they
went to the bar and they said, I'd like to
have a Moscow mule, comrade, Would that be inappropriate to
drink these days?
Speaker 4 (07:01):
No, I don't think so, not at all. You know,
we might, we might chekily call it a Michigan mule.
I don't think there's anything wrong with that. Yeah, served
in the copper cup, I think that's pretty cool.
Speaker 5 (07:16):
Hey, there's a connection to copper Craft and the copper cup.
I don't even know what's in a Moscow mule, But
it's good summertime drink, I think, isn't it.
Speaker 4 (07:25):
It sure is. Yeah. If you like ginger ale and
vodka and it will twist the lime, I think that's
that's your your drink.
Speaker 5 (07:32):
Okay, we're in the dwindling days of summer before we
start talking about apple products and so forth. But if
it's not a Moscow mule, if you're too shy to
order that because you don't want to be seen to
be a comrade of Vladimir Putin, what what would be
a copper Craft drink that you would prescribe for us?
(07:53):
Maybe Labor Day weekend, something that will just hit the spot.
Speaker 4 (07:57):
Labor Day weekend. I think it's the unofficial start a fall.
So I'm going to say you kick off fall with
a nine year old copper Craft product which you actually
can't get at Meyer. It's under forty dollars. It's really
really a quality product. Lot lots of good cinnamon and
kind of fall baking spice flavors in that one. So
I think you know you put that over a rock
(08:18):
if you don't want to fuss with it, and if
you do you just want an old fashioned it's great
for that too. So Coppercraft nine year would be my
choice for sure.
Speaker 5 (08:27):
Very creative and just luscious website. How do we find
more information about craft Co and plan not only to
imvibe in the product and maybe visit the product.
Speaker 4 (08:38):
Absolutely, we'll come on out September sixteenth. I'm looking forward
to unveiling our craft Coo social house. So make the
best ways to come out and see us and talk
to us and we'll pour for you and have great time. Otherwise,
you know you can head to Meyer. Certainly had two
independent retailers all across Michigan, and I look for us
on the shelf, have a.
Speaker 5 (08:56):
Drink and talk about it. Craft co from West Michigan,
Ali Anderson with them.
Speaker 6 (09:00):
