Speaker 1 (00:05):
Live across the Great Lake State. You are connected to
Michigan's most engaging and influential radio and television program, Michigan's
Big Show starring Michael Patrick Shields, presented by Blue Cross,
Blue Shield of Michigan and Blue Care Network.

Speaker 2 (00:19):
I'm producer and creative director Tony Cuthberts.

Speaker 1 (00:23):
Now in the shadow of the Capitol Dome and Lansing.
He's heard from the beaches of Lake Michigan, to the
halls of power and behind closed doors. Here's Michigan's Michael
Patrick Shields.

Speaker 3 (00:35):
Michael Patrick Shields is on their Good Morning World.

Speaker 1 (00:39):
Good Morning Michigan.

Speaker 4 (00:40):
I'm Kyle Malin, editor of the Meurrs newsletter, filling in
for Michael Patrick today. Tony cuthbert on the other side
of the glass, and we've been talking today about the
governor signing yesterday an eighty one billion dollar state budget.
There's no longer a any state government consternation regarding the

(01:00):
budget unless you're in the marijuana industry, and then you're
hoping a lawsuit that's got filed yesterday get some traction.
And there isn't a twenty four percent increase in the
wholesale tax. But we'll have to see how that plays out.
Join us to talk about this and talk about why
he was a no vote on the budget. As our
next guest, the Senate Republican Leader Eric Nesbitt and gubernatorial candidate.

Speaker 1 (01:25):
Good morning.

Speaker 4 (01:25):
How you doing sir, Hey.

Speaker 3 (01:27):
Good morning. Thanks for having me on, Kyle, and thanks
for covering for Michael Patrick and informing working families across
the state and on what's going on in Lansing.

Speaker 4 (01:37):
Well, I appreciate that. And we've had folks talk about
the budget so far. We had the House Minority floor
Leader John Fitzgerald on a little earlier. He talked about
why he liked the budget. But you were among the
five or six no votes in the Senate on the budget.
Why were you a no vote on it?

Speaker 3 (01:58):
Yeah? I mean I call it the good, the bad,
and the other. The good part of what was passed
is that one hundred percent of taxes from the pump
actually go to roads. Finally been fighting for that for
fifteen years. That's going to make it easier for folks
to make it here in Michigan, to have better roads
here here in the state. There's so you know, there's
some bad portions such as you know it doesn't have

(02:21):
a mandate for state employees to actually return to the office.
And then there's some ugly portions that it's going to
make it harder and harder for businesses to actually make
it here in Michigan, job creators to make it here
in Michigan, because they're not going to allow all of
Trump's job creator tax cuts to take full effect, and
that's going to be tougher for us to attract and

(02:42):
retain businesses here in the state. And as we know,
over the last seven years with Governor Whitmer, it's become
tougher and tougher to make it here in Michigan. You
see that with the high cost of living, whether it's housing,
whether it's the cost of government, whether it's the cost
of insurance and energy. You see that with our kids,
it's tougher and tougher for the making in Michigan, as

(03:04):
three out of four fourth graders aren't able to read
at grade level and the average students three quarters of
a grade level behind, just because of the COVID lockdowns.
And you see this tougher and tuffer for the next
generation to make it because the governor continues over the
last several years to pile on more and more debt
to the children, whether it's stealing from the teacher pension

(03:25):
fund last year or borrowing three and a half billion
dollars six years ago, that's going to take six and
a half billion dollars to pay back. And so my
whole philosophy is how do you make you need to
make it easier and easier to make it here in Michigan.
And I think this budget though better than some of
the past Democrat budgets because we actually have a Republican

(03:45):
House and then they eliminated about half of the phantom
employees that are in state government. There's still a lot
more work to do. They've started some eliminations and waste
front reviews a speaker Hall and House Republicans did. But
believe me that with Democrat Governor Gretchen Whitmer and a
Democrat Senate that there's still a lot of a lot

(04:07):
of opportunities to from the waste frodden abuse and actually
make sure that we're not increasing the cost on working
families across the state.

Speaker 4 (04:17):
Well, let's start with the good You mentioned that we're
going to finally have a dynamic where all of these
state taxes we pay at the pump are going to roads.
And so we do have a road funding package that's
designed to get about one point eight five billion dollars
more into the roads a year. Do you think you
know the road The Road Group said that we needed

(04:38):
three to four billion dollars, but we only got one
point eight five. Does that mean that we're going to
have to go back and raise taxes again to get
the quote unquote full funding for roads.

Speaker 3 (04:50):
Well, you saw Republicans pass a plan that included three
point one billion dollars for roads without a tax and
create because right now it's tough enough for working families
to make it in Michigan with the high cost of living,
high cost of government here here in Michigan, and unfortunately
Governor Whitmer told the legislature that if you didn't get

(05:14):
a tax increase, if there wasn't higher revenues, that she's
going to shut down the government. And it's similar to
what you're seeing out in DC right now with Chuck
Schumer saying unless you give health care to legal immigrants
and have have government funded health care for legal immigrants,
we're going to keep the government shut down. Let's get
back to basics let's make it easier for working families

(05:35):
to make it here in Michigan. Over the last six
years under Governor Whitmer, we've seen the budgets grow by
over forty percent money thirties. And it's about making sure
there's accountability. And so as I look at creating a
vision for Michigan that how do you make it easier
for one are families to make it here in Michigan

(05:57):
by lowering the cost of government, lowering the cost of venery,
lowering the cost of assurance. How do you make it
easier for job creators to make it here in Michigan
by again lowering the cost of doing business. Capital files
the path police resistance. And what this governor and the
Democrat Tripacked over the last several years have done is
put up resistor after resistor, whether it's the Green New

(06:19):
Deal that needs to be repealed, or whether it's higher
income taxes that need to be lowered, or whether it's
a repealing of right to work that says, hey, we're
closed for business. And what this governor continues to do
is say is putting a close for business side. And
if we don't shake up the status quo and Lansing.
We just continue on the status quo and that we're
going to be a smaller state with less population, less

(06:42):
educated state, and less opportunities for our next generation actually
make it here in Michigan.

Speaker 4 (06:46):
Eric Nesbit, our guest here on Michigan's Big Show starring
Michael Patrick Shields, all right, we're going to take your
Senate Minority leader hat off and put your gubernatorial candidate
hat on. We see that there is going to be
three gubernatorial debate forums coming up here. The chair of
the Michigan Republican Party said, We've got one in Sparta
on October twenty nine, one in Roseville on November fourth,

(07:09):
and one at the Great Wolf Lodge in Traverse City
on November eighteen. Do you plan on attending these debates?

Speaker 1 (07:15):
Center?

Speaker 3 (07:17):
Let me double cent. But i do know I'm going
to the first one, and I'm hoping to make it
to all three of them. I think there was a
little because it's sampoo, but I look forward to making
sure that I'm trying to make it all three of them.
That's the plan. But everyone really has felt the pain
to the Democrats and power in the state, and it
hasn't just been COVID. It hasn't been higher regulations and

(07:39):
more bureaucracy and higher taxes and higher golf government. It's
becoming tougher and tougher for families to make it here
in Michigan. Nowadays, our businesses are having trouble making it here,
Our farmers are having trouble making here with the red
tape and bureaucracy. Our families can't make it here in Michigan.
And most importantly, our kids in the next generation are
having trouble make it here in Michigan. Unfortunately, when I

(08:00):
was fortunate, when I was growing up, the number one
export was cars. Right now, are afraid our number one
export's becoming our young people again. And I believe that
next year is our last chance to save the state.
That's why I'm running for governor because I want everyone
to be able to make it in Michigan. If we
want people to be able to make it in Michigan,
we have to make Michigan work for them. And that's
why it's going to be important to make sure that

(08:20):
we have these debates around the state, that we engage
folks around the state. I've hit eighty of the eighty
three counties so far and three more counties up, hopefully
may of those the next month. But it's all about
bringing folks together to make sure that businesses and farmers
can make it here, making sure the law enforcement officials

(08:42):
that we have their back and they can make it here,
and that we make sure that our kids are able
to make it here.

Speaker 1 (08:47):
Set up.
