halls of power and behind closed doors. Here's Michigan's Michael
Patrick Shields.

I want a kinder and gentler nation.
Speaker 4 (00:40):
I have a super bowler wordscare herming, but not everybody
has a superpower s means him wars.
Speaker 5 (00:49):
Michael Patrick Shields is on the air.
Speaker 3 (00:52):
Good morning world.
Speaker 6 (00:53):
For beautiful eyes, look for the good in others, for
beautiful lips, seek only words of kindness, and for poise.
Speaker 7 (01:03):
Walk with the knowledge that you are never alone.
Speaker 6 (01:06):
Those are the words of Audrey Hepburn, and this morning
the words of Michael Patrick Shields. A very pleasant Monday
to you from the.
Speaker 7 (01:16):
End of the road at the top of the world.
Speaker 6 (01:18):
With a tail well calculated to keep you in suspense.
One bite, everyone knows the rules. Another one with Michael
Patrick Shields and it's a whopper thanks to Tony Cuthbert
and the orchestra. He's rounded up the unusual suspects that
will be with us today, including Nick Clark, who manages
the poker room at fire Keeper's Casino. Are you bluffing?
(01:43):
Are you going all in? These are poker phrases that
you use every day in business and life. What do
they really mean? How can you make money playing poker?
What's a dead man's hand? Remember all that seven cards?
And we are also going to be joined by a
man who completed the Detroit Marathon, Clayton Molinari. You might
(02:06):
recognize the last name, the son of Claude Mullinary. What's
it like to go twenty six point whatever miles? And
how do you train for something like that? And what
was it like to run through the city of Detroit
not being chased, just trying to have a little fun, folks.
John you Bacon has written about a lot of different things.
(02:26):
He's usually equated to the University of Michigan at sports
and Jim Harbaugh and all the rest of that. This time,
in advance of November, he's released The Gales of November
the untold story of the Edmen Fitzgerald. Now that's the
ship that sank in the seventies, and every year on
November tenth, we sort of commemorated on this program and
(02:48):
wonder what can possibly be new about it? What part
of the story is still untold? Well, he went deep dive,
pardon the pun, on the Arthur Anderson ship for a
couple of weeks. It's it like to be on a freighter.
What happened to the Edmund Fitzgerald all those years ago?
John you Bacon on this program later today, The.
Speaker 3 (03:14):
Legend lives on from the Chibun, the big big big
get Chagoumi.
Speaker 6 (03:21):
Debbie Stabanaw, remember her United States Senator will return to
the radio stage with us. We have plenty of things
to ask her about, uh and some of them have
to do with what's going on without her in Washington.
Some of them have to do with Michigan, et cetera,
and so forth. We'll reconnect with Debbie Stabanaw. It's been
(03:41):
a while. It's been a while.
Speaker 7 (03:45):
Senator Government.
Speaker 8 (03:47):
This jo's apology the ploy Senator.
Speaker 9 (03:50):
Sator, we're both part of the same hypocrisy family.
Speaker 10 (03:55):
Senator, you can have my ns and I don't feel
like my offer is this nothing?
Speaker 6 (04:00):
Remember, she would say, why do you always have to
play the Godfather before I come? Ah, she was a
good sport about it. I remember having dinner with her
and Ken Della for one time at Mackinaw Island during
the policy conference, and she told me she was a
fan of that Kevin Spacey Washington TV show remember on
(04:20):
Netflix that was so popular and I always forget the
name of it.
Speaker 7 (04:23):
That's the House of Cards.
Speaker 6 (04:26):
Yeah, that was It's kind of referring back to the
poker room at.
Speaker 7 (04:31):
Fire Keepers there with the House of Cards. Ah. Okay.
Speaker 6 (04:36):
We lost a friend in northern Michigan where we're heard
on WMKT, and he was a very big supporter of
Ernest Hemingway.
Speaker 7 (04:44):
Chris Struble has passed away.
Speaker 6 (04:47):
Suddenly, it would seem to me, and we're going to
talk to Diana Stamfler about his legacy. She's with promote Michigan.
And that's what Chris Strubel did, reminding everybody that when
you talk about Ernest Hemingway and Key West and Pamplona
and oh Oak Park, Illinois and all the other places
(05:08):
Cuba for which Hemingway was famous. It was Walloon Lake first,
and the very first short story Hemingway ever wrote was
called Up in Michigan. And now the late Chris Struble
will be remembered on this program as he should be
and remembered all the time, lived in Potoski and just
loved the legacy of Hemingway and celebrated it every single year.
(05:30):
Speaking of Cuba, Felix Sharp Cavaliero will be with us.
He received an award in Detroit, the Cuban American who
is a sort of a political analyst for us on
this program and was close with the Archer administration and
the other candidates now running, some of them for the
mayor of Detroit. And things are getting tougher and tougher
in Cuba. We hear, we'll hear from him. One of
(05:53):
the most unusual situations, well the couple again this weekend,
having to do with our airplanes in the skies. One
of them is that a mystery object hit a United's Airlines.
Speaker 7 (06:07):
Windshield. Now, okay, you might say bird strike.
Speaker 6 (06:09):
No, this was at thirty six thousand feet. What on Earth,
well above Earth, could hit a commercial aircraft at thirty
six thousand feet.
Speaker 7 (06:21):
There are no birds up there.
Speaker 6 (06:23):
Anyway, it broke through the window and they had the
land and the blood all over. The pilot had to
it was a scene, man, What could it be? Lieutenant
Colonel Allen Bullet Campbell, retired from the Air Force, has
written a book called My Life Above the Clouds, and
he was a captain with Delta Airlines for thirty seven years.
(06:44):
We'll speculate what.
Speaker 7 (06:46):
That might have been.
Speaker 6 (06:48):
Oh, you might say, maybe it was a meteor. But
the odds of a meteor hitting a commercial aircraft are
like infinitesimal. You have a better chance of winning the
Mega Millions or Powerball lottery.
Speaker 7 (07:03):
Than it would be of a meteor. Now I gotta
ask you, I have to ask what could it be?
Speaker 6 (07:18):
Anyway? Tonight's powerball is three hundred and four million dollars.
You can play it at your Michigan Lottery retailer or
online at Michigan Lottery dot com. The drawings are Monday,
Wednesday and Saturday. You can also play at Meyer, where
you get more of the things you want most, more
local produce, more home decor, more free prescriptions more important
(07:38):
than you get them all for less admire Why would
you pay more three hundred and four million dollars. You
can play on the Michigan Lottery app and of course
at Michigan Lottery dot com. Oh, there was another weird
thing in Chicago at O'Hara Airport to United Airlines. Aircraft
hit each other. This keeps seems to happen. Now these
(08:00):
are these are not like it's not going steaming down
the runway. It's just kind of taxiing. And so the
wings bumped into each other. And you know that takes
two aircraft out of the system.
Speaker 7 (08:10):
How can it be?
Speaker 6 (08:13):
We are gonna ask Bullet Campbell how we can have
these bumps and collision. I know there are hair is
a very busy airport, but still, come on, we be
better than that, can't we Welcome back on a Monday.
Speaker 7 (08:28):
It's Michael Patrick Shield Monday. It'll be a ride come Monday.
Speaker 10 (08:36):
I'll be.
Speaker 11 (08:43):
Can I just want you back by my side.
Speaker 6 (08:51):
And you back off my side.
Speaker 11 (09:00):
You're a ride at fire Keepers.

Speaker 4 (11:02):
Taylor Swift is taking up the top spots on the
Billboard Hot one hundred chart. That's thanks to her latest album,
The Life of a Showgirl. Every entry from one to
twelve is occupied by a song off the album. The
Fate of Ophelia is in the lead, marking Swift's thirteenth
career Hot one hundred number one. This is the first
time in the chart's history that the top twelve songs
(11:24):
are dominated by a single album. This is also the
third time Swift songs have taken up the entire top
ten of a week's chart. And Broadway continues to face
a possible strike as a contract between musicians and Broadway
producers remains out of reach. Larry Kofski reports.
Speaker 14 (11:40):
Things were looking brighter on Saturday on word that a
tentative settlement had been reached with actors, but The New
York Times reports there's still no agreement with musicians who've
been working since the end of August on an expired contract.
The paper says their union hopes to meet again with
producers this week. The musicians are seeking improvements in pay
and benefits. A strike would be the first major walkout
(12:02):
on Broadway since two thousand and seven. I'm Larry Kofski
in DC News Radio.
Speaker 4 (12:12):
Brandy is explaining her abrupt exit from the stage during
her performance with Monica on Saturday night. In a post
on Instagram, she explained that her early exit from the
Chicago show was because of a medical concern. That's entertainment.
I'm Jaqueline Carl.
Speaker 6 (12:48):
Oh my sweet lord, oh my granny. It's Michael Patrick,
Shields and own. There was so much that went on
this weekend in the news business. It used to be
the weekends were quiet.
Speaker 7 (13:00):
Not so anymore.
Speaker 6 (13:02):
We had these no Kings rallies, and you know, I
see reports where they say yet, oh, millions turned out.
I'd never know what to believe anymore. Maybe it was millions,
Maybe it was old footage. I'm really kind of tired
of artificial intelligence creating videos that aren't real too. I
saw one this weekend of a Japanese reporter in the
(13:24):
locker room with the Dodgers after they clinched the National
League pennant, with the champagne being poured all around, and
it looked like a funny video. And then I said, hmm,
wait a minute, what kind of champagne were they pouring?
So I screenshoted it Tony Cuthbert and I zoomed in
because I wanted to tell Matt Rhoades what sort of
champagne they use in the locker room for a celebration
like that. Yeah, And a label was all blurry, so
(13:47):
it was fake, you know, there was no label on
the champagne anyway.
Speaker 15 (13:52):
I think by the way Major League Baseball has an
official champagne sponsor that they use for each and every celebration.
Speaker 7 (13:57):
Yeah, you can't have sure Sure.
Speaker 6 (14:00):
The maps that clean up the floor of the champagne
after it's over, or sponsored by somebody to We gotta
squeeze every penny out of everything that we possibly can.
Speaker 7 (14:10):
But our man in Ireland, who.
Speaker 6 (14:13):
Likes to wax about such things, is upset about artificial intelligence,
and so he's better to echo my frustration than anyone.
Speaker 16 (14:22):
I hate AI I and I hate it more and
more every day. This new thing where people can make
whatever our video they want with AI.
Speaker 3 (14:30):
We need to be put on a stop to this.
Speaker 16 (14:32):
Oh, everybody can be creative, It's amazing. Everybody isn't supposed
to be created off. The best thing most people can
do with their creative day is cap it to themselves.
We have this powerful technology, and what are we doing
with that?
Speaker 17 (14:45):
Oh?
Speaker 16 (14:45):
Here's the video off the Queen wrestling and Hulkrgan and
the hell and this hell match. Here's Michael Jackson stealing
somebody's Kentucky Fried chicken and then moon walking away with us.
Have you ever wanted to say, Freddie Mercury order a
burger and then complain that they've we need to stop
put it back in the box. This thing is not
going to keep us around when it's smarter than us.
(15:07):
The best thing about most people's ideas is that they
don't happen. Let's not make it easier. Most people's dreams
do not come true, and that's for the best. Let's
just go back to two thousand and one. Follow me,
I'm delicious, Okay.
Speaker 6 (15:25):
Lancing had a No King's rally where we're heard on WJIM,
and if the picture is accurate, it looked like a
pretty good turnout.
Speaker 7 (15:31):
On the Capitol Line, somebody.
Speaker 6 (15:34):
Held up a sign that said, I can't tell if
he's ignoring the Constitution or just can't read cursive. So
was that a creative one?
Speaker 7 (15:42):
I guess it was creative one.
Speaker 6 (15:45):
There were other places too, of course it had the
No King's Rally. Usually, if an Atlanta is involved in
a game, Tony Cuthbert, whether it's baseball or football, I'm
not watching it because for some reason Atlanta bores me.
But last night the night game, well, you could watch
four NFL games in a row. Yesterday What a day?
Speaker 7 (16:03):
Huh?
Speaker 15 (16:04):
No, boy, Well, I could do without the morning game.
But everything else perfectly fine.
Speaker 6 (16:08):
Well, it wasn't much of a game. Matthew Stafford and
the Rams just totally destroyed Jacksonville in London. And then
if you went all the way to the last game
Atlanta was at San Francisco, and after the game was over,
I guess it was National running Backs Day whatever that means. Wow,
the woman reporter on the sideline put these big I
(16:30):
don't even know the color.
Speaker 7 (16:31):
It's like a.
Speaker 6 (16:32):
Violet purple colored vlure velvet coat on the three running backs.
And they got a big chain too with a metal
on it. And I saw the pictures of this. It
was really campy, and I said, hmmm, that might be
a good outfit for Mackinaw Island next month.
Speaker 7 (16:49):
No, no, no, did you see it? Did you see these coats?
Speaker 18 (16:55):
No?
Speaker 7 (16:55):
I was long.
Speaker 6 (16:56):
I want to send it to you right now and
then you just give me the thumbs up or thumbs down.
We'll post it on our Michigan Big Show page and
you say, should MPs where this to the Mackinac conference
next year? Stay tuned for that. By the way, Mike McDaniel,
I'm going to talk about the Dolphins for just a
minute here. I know that the owner there, the guy
(17:17):
who supports the University of Michigan, Stephen Ross, said he's
going to stick with him as the Dolphins coach. But
they lost thirty one to six to the Cleveland Browns
and the Dolphins are one in six now. And Mike
McDaniel gripped the lecter after and he said worrying about
his job would be a disservice to the organization. He said,
(17:39):
if I'm thinking about my job, I'm not doing my job.
I'm coaching. They'll get everything they can from me, and
I refuse to spend time thinking about my job security.
Speaker 7 (17:50):
Well, he said, the players were frustrated.
Speaker 6 (17:53):
Eleven penalties, a bunch of turnovers, three interceptions from Tua,
and a fumble by the kick returner. He said, we
did everything we could to lose these games, and we'll
watch the tape and if we have to change our
style of play, that's what we'll do.
Speaker 7 (18:09):
But not such a.
Speaker 6 (18:11):
Good time for the Fins. And everybody likes Mike McDaniel.
He's amusing and everything, and you wanted nice guys to
do well. It's rough for the Dolphins. For what it's worth.
Speaker 15 (18:23):
The word on the street is the reason they might
not make a move. Also is because there's nobody on
the staff that's outside of him that's qualified if he
even is to be a head coach. So usually you
would just move up an offense or defensive coordinator. But
apparently they don't see too fondly of those guys either.
Speaker 6 (18:38):
Well that never really makes sense to me because they're
the ones that are putting the team on the field.
So right, if you take the top guy out the
second guy, you know, I mean.
Speaker 7 (18:46):
What's the point.
Speaker 6 (18:48):
So it could be a very measured actually a response
by Steven Ross and you know, plan for next year
and figure out who you're gonna get. By the way,
you ought to probably get a new quarterback too. Oh yeah,
in that situation, probably a wholesale changed down there. There
was a this is too good, not good to be true,
(19:08):
but to the truth is stranger than fiction. In California,
they were going to close part of Interstate five for
a demonstration of the Marines two hundred and fiftieth anniversary
because they were going to shoot some kind of rockets
that were going to go over the freeway and they
didn't want people on the freeway when they were doing
this demonstration, Like it's like a military firework show. Gavin Newsom,
(19:29):
the governor, was all upset, like, how can you shoot
over a public area like that? And sure enough, a
motorcycle that was part of vp jd Vance's security detail
was hit by shrapnel after one hundred and fifty five
millimeters shell exploded over I five on Saturday.
Speaker 7 (19:46):
During the celebration. If I told you that, you'd think
I was lying. But it is the truth. The truth
is in the middle with Michael Patrick Shields.
Speaker 19 (20:00):
Thousands of people in the UK have filed a joint
legal claim estimated at over a billion dollars against Johnson
and Johnson.
Speaker 3 (20:07):
The lawsuit claims the US pharmaceutical giant sold baby powder
it knew was contaminated with cancer causing asbestos. The claim
involves over three thousand people who developed various forms of
cancer and other diseases. The suit is based on internal
Johnson and Johnson memos and scientific reports. The company has
long fought thousands of similar cases in the US. It
agreed last year to pay seven hundred million dollars to
(20:29):
resolve claims that it misled customers.
Speaker 19 (20:32):
I'm Mark Meefield, California is about to become the first
state in the US requiring restaurants with twenty or more
locations to list major food allergens on their menus ingredients
like milk, eggs, shellfish, and tree nuts if present in
a menu item. The nonprofit group Food Allergy Research and
Education beliefs the log is a significant step toward protecting
(20:53):
people with food allergies. Health Update. I'm Sarah Lee Kessler.
Speaker 15 (21:00):
Michigan's Big Show starring Michael Patrick Shields.
Speaker 6 (21:03):
Congressman Tom Barrett, the Republican from Charlotte.
Speaker 5 (21:06):
Only Enough.
Speaker 20 (21:07):
Nancy Pelosi's office is a couple of doors down for mine,
so I usually tell people who come visit that they
ought to stop buy and get their daily stock trading
tips from.
Speaker 21 (21:15):
Her on their way through the buildings.
Speaker 20 (21:17):
But she hasn't invited me in for coffee so far.
But I wouldn't say we're close.
Speaker 7 (21:24):
Tony Cuppert, I thought you get a kick out of this.
Speaker 6 (21:25):
I went to visit my son Harrison at his office
in the law office at which he works on Friday
because it was his birthday and for whatever reason, it
was like a casual Friday, so the Dodgers were going
to play in the What it turned out to be
the pennant winning championship game later that day, So some
people wearing Dodger jerseys and Harrison was wearing a Red
(21:47):
Wings jersey.
Speaker 7 (21:48):
Good for him and he hung attorney.
Speaker 6 (21:51):
The woman who works down the hall from him came
in and said, Oh.
Speaker 7 (21:55):
That shirt is so cool. I saw it in Ferris
Bueller's day off.
Speaker 15 (22:00):
Well there's a connection there, I guess, And.
Speaker 6 (22:02):
That's all she knew it as, and he had to
explain to her that it was actually a Red Wings
hockey jersey, a sweater, as they say in hockey.
Speaker 7 (22:11):
It's only been around for one hundred years.
Speaker 15 (22:13):
Yeah, we're celebrating the centennial.
Speaker 2 (22:15):
Late to the party.
Speaker 7 (22:16):
Maybe she is Bueler, Eueler, Bueler.
Speaker 6 (22:22):
We were just talking about airplanes a minute ago. Nicole
Noel Williams, the CEO of Capitol Region International Airport at
fly Lansing dot com, has some ideas for travel for

you'll be at Eastern Michigan University. Where your future doesn't
start after college. It starts the day you step on campus.

internships that turn into job offers and professors who bring

the real world into the classroom. So by the time
you graduate, you're not just ready, you're already working. Eastern
grads get hired, and that's the future you're looking for.

Speaker 23 (23:42):
On Monday, NBC News Radio, I'm Mark Mayfield.
Speaker 3 (24:05):
President Trump is warning Colombia to immediately stop production of
illegal drugs. In a post on truth Social on Sunday,
Trump called Columbian President Gustavo Petro an illegal drug dealer
who strongly encourages the massive production of drugs. Trump want
to say, if Petro doesn't take immediate action to halt it,
the US will do it for him, he added, and
it won't be done nicely. The President also noted that
(24:26):
as of today, the US will no longer make any
large scale payments or subsidies to Columbia, calling it a
ripoff of America. President Trump says imposing an additional one
hundred percent tarify on China may not be sustainable for
the economy. The President made the comment during an interview
with Fox's Sunday Morning Futures.
Speaker 18 (24:43):
That's what the number is.
Speaker 24 (24:45):
It's probably not you know, it could stand, but they
forced me to do that.
Speaker 3 (24:52):
This comes as President Trump is still on track to
meet with Chinese President Xijin Ping in the next few weeks,
despite the recent trade friction between the world's too larges economies.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessen said last week there was substantial
communication between the two countries and he believes that a
meeting with the two leaders will still happen. Speaker of
the House Mike Johnson is slamming Democrats and Aid the
(25:12):
ongoing government shutdown. Tammy true Hel reports.
Speaker 25 (25:15):
Appearing on ABC's This Week, Johnson said lawmakers on the
other side of the aisle need to start being serious
about negotiating an end to the matter.
Speaker 26 (25:22):
I refuse to allow us to come back and engage
in anything until the government's reopened. When the Democrats do
the right thing for the people. They're playing politics, and
we have to use every ounce of leverage. We have
to make sure they do the right thing.
Speaker 25 (25:33):
His comments come as the shutdown is now the third
longest funding laps in modern history. The government shutdown is
set to enter another week with no clear end in
sight after senators failed for the tenth time to resolve
the impass in votes on Thursday.
Speaker 27 (25:46):
I'm Tammy Trhio.
Speaker 3 (25:47):
Ad Vice President jd Vance will visit Israel this week
to discuss transitioning into the second phase of President Trump's
Gaza Peace Plan. You're listening to the latest from NBC
News Radio. Meta is ending the Messengers standalone desktop app
for Windows and Mac computers, as first reported by Apple Insider.
The company says that on December fifteenth, users will have
(26:07):
to go to Facebook's website to access Messenger. Meta says
you might want to activate secure storage and set up
a pin so you can save your chant history. Google
is among the tech giants trying to move away from
China's supply chains. Sources tell Nike Asia that Google wants
more production in Thailand. Microsoft and Amazon Web Services are
also looking to move away from China as trade tensions
(26:29):
remain red hot between Washington and Beijing and packsos. PayPal's
blockchain partner, accidentally miitted three hundred trillion dollars worth of
paypals stable coin on Wednesday, described as a technical error,
The coins were burned off and the problem fixed in
about twenty minutes. Stable Coins are digital currency tying to
a fixed asset, in this case, the US dollar. There
aren't enough dollars in the world to back three hundred

Lieutenant Colonel Allen Bullet.
Speaker 6 (27:18):
Campbell probably spent more time in the sky than on ground,
and he's written a book called My Life Above the Clouds,
My Life Above the Clouds, which you can get wherever
books are sold in an Amazon dot com. He flew
twenty one point five years with the United States Air
Force and the Florida Air National Guard, and then thirty
seven years with Delta Airlines. And I tell you what,
(27:43):
on this program, if you can get an aviation expert,
there's so much to talk about constantly, but read about
it in his book, My Life Above the Clouds, or
turn up your radio right now. Thank you for being here,
and thank you for your service to our country.
Speaker 28 (27:57):
It was my pleasure and I appreciate that. Thank you.
Speaker 6 (28:00):
I've got so many things to ask you about. One
is that two United Airlines passenger jets collided on the
tarmac at O'Hare Airport in Chicago on Friday. They were
taxiing and the horizontal stabilizer of one jet hit the
other jet. Nobody was hurt or anything, but you know,
you might say, I thought that story was last week.
(28:21):
It seems to be happening very frequently. Is that something
new or why do you think that's happening?
Speaker 28 (28:27):
Well, it is something new to me, and I have
no idea why it's happening. I'm about as stunned as
anybody on the planet, because you know, you're on a line.
Everybody's got their little line. All the wing spans are
measured and that sort of thing. So I don't know
if somebody sneaks a little left or a little right.
It's just one of those very odd things that should
never happen. And I don't know. There's a lot more flying,
(28:49):
there's a lot more airplanes, so maybe there's more possibility.
Speaker 6 (28:53):
Thirty seven years with Delta Airlines, did you ever bump
into another aircraft?
Speaker 28 (28:58):
Absolutely? Never, you know, And that's just part of the
beauty of my life. I never had a flat tire,
I never lost an engine, I never had a fire.
I mean, it's thirty seven of the most safest years
you'll ever imagine.
Speaker 6 (29:11):
Secret Service uncovered a hunting stand in a tree with
a direct line of sight to Air Force One in
Palm Beach, the President's aircraft. There were no individuals at
the scene, and so they're sort of investigating the scene
and what the capabilities would be. Is that something that
could be perilous to an aircraft like Air Force one?
(29:32):
Somebody with a hunting stand in a tree.
Speaker 28 (29:36):
You know, I read that story and it's like Twilight Zone.
It's just crazy stuff. And I kind of wondered why
the Secret Service or somebody didn't just kind of sneak
and watch and see whoever gets up in that thing
and catches them. They're going to check fingerprints, you know,
they're going to dessert that thing the world over. But
that is just spooky. I have no idea what's going
(29:57):
on with that. And you know that the president's doing
a great but he's got to put up with extra
security because of this nonsense. I don't know. It's just stunning.
Speaker 6 (30:06):
Can someone take a pot shot in an aircraft next
to an airport if they want to? Can you damage
a commercial aircraft with a with a shotgun or you know,
any kind of pistol or anything.
Speaker 28 (30:18):
Yeah, I hate to admit that, but that's certainly possible.
You know a lot of the airports you go to
down in South Florida and all you know, the highway
goes right by the airport, Interstate highways over you know,
high rise kind of highways. So yeah, that's that's certainly possible.
People can do that all the time, and that it
doesn't happen more often, I guess it is just a
real plus don't. I don't know what else to say.
(30:40):
It is a risk.
Speaker 6 (30:42):
I'm sorry to hear that answer. Now, this one is
really spooky. A United Airlines pilot was forced to make
an emergency landing a mystery object smash the windshield of
a Boeing seven thirty seven. The unusual part is it
was wasn't a bird strike.
Speaker 7 (31:01):
It was at thirty six.
Speaker 6 (31:03):
Thousand feet and the pilot's worms were bleeding, and there
were glass cuts and the dashboard. What could you possibly
hit at thirty six thousand feet.
Speaker 28 (31:14):
That's the mystery of the day. I have no idea.
I would think it was a windshield, you know, explosion,
They crack and things like that. They had a couple
with the Pete hagg Seth and Marco Rubio, and that's
not uncommon. People have that happen. I never did. But
that something hit it from the outside, that's going to
be under investigation. I don't know if that's been proven yet.
(31:35):
But thirty six thousand feet is incredible. There's nothing up
there but airliners, so you know, unless it's things from Mars.
I mean, you know, they got all these stories about
UFOs and things. Maybe they finally found one.
Speaker 7 (31:49):
The hard way.
Speaker 6 (31:51):
There was talk about space debris or a meteor, but
the FAA said the odds of hitting space debris are
one trillion to one.
Speaker 28 (32:01):
Right. That couldn't agree more with that, And that's just
you know, that's just one of the risks you take
when you fly. If you don't worry about stuff like that,
or you go crazy, and you know, you better chance
to win in the lottery than have something like that happen.
So I don't know if they'll ever find out what
that was, but you know, meteors and debris and stuff
does come in. Usually it burns up in the atmosphere,
(32:23):
but maybe that's one that kind of made it a
little more solid through the atmosphere. In daytime, they wouldn't
have seen it. You know, at night they might have
seen a streak, but at daytime they probably wouldn't have.
Speaker 6 (32:33):
Not much you can do with a commercial airline aer
I'm guessing to avoid hitting something when you see it
at that speed and that height is.
Speaker 28 (32:40):
There absolutely nothing. You'd never see it in the first place,
and even if you saw it, you can't move fast
enough to get out of this way. There's no way.
Speaker 6 (32:51):
Well, I'm worried about this it's, you know, on its own,
it's it's an incident. But when you start to add
it on, you begin to wonder if suddenly we're getting
closer and closer to you know, meeting them, if you
know what I mean.
Speaker 28 (33:08):
Well, you know, I've just got to go back to
my positive attitude. Because I flew for thirty seven years
and never had a flat tire, You're going to get
much more risk going down the interstate or riding your
bicycle or walking the neighborhood than you are on a
commercial airplane. And so that's my initial spin on every
story I do. I raced boats, I did aerobatics, I
(33:28):
did all kinds of things hugely more dangerous. Flying commercial
airplanes is just nothing autopilot speak talk visit, visit, visit,
and then land. It's just the safest thing on the planet.
And I'm not exaggerating that. That's statistically, that's the truth.
Speaker 6 (33:45):
You never saw on what you would consider to be
an unidentified flying object in thirty seven years up there
at Delta.
Speaker 28 (33:51):
Absolutely not. And I flew like you leave Johannesburg, South Africa,
and it's literally all night long back to Atlanta. If
there were something up there, you'd see it. I mean,
you got somebody in the cockpit, you know, twenty four
to seven obviously, and so if there was an event,
somebody would see it and notice it. And never, never, never.
And so when I hear about the Navy and they
(34:13):
chase something down they have it on radar, that is unusual.
And if there's a record of that, I'd like to
read it. I'd like to hear more about it.
Speaker 6 (34:20):
We'd like to hear more about you and your book,
My Life Above the Clouds, and you can get it.
It's Lieutenant Colonel Alan Bullet Campbell, who was in the
US Air Force too. I took that flight from Johannesburg
to Kennedy Airport one time.
Speaker 7 (34:35):
That is a long, long, long trip.
Speaker 6 (34:38):
How do you manage that as a pilot, Because it
looks to me like your seat is the least comfortable
in the house.
Speaker 28 (34:45):
Well, you know it's not. It's a nice comfortable seat.
And you're only on duty for four hours. Then you
go on the break, you go upstairs and go to sleep.
Then you go back on duty for four hours and
you eat. You're in one of those breaks, and so
you know you've got two different crews and so it's
just well maintained. Everybody. You learn how to wake up.
(35:05):
I keep saying that in my book and talks that
it's amazing that you can sleep for four hours, wake up,
throw some water in your face, drink a cup of coffee,
and just go right back to the cockpit totally alert,
and then go back four hours later and go sleep again.
And that's just something humans can adjust to, or at
least I could. It worked great for me.
Speaker 6 (35:26):
You're not human, You're quite an interesting fellow. And we're
going to read about it in my book, My Life
Above the Clouds. And I'm sure you make it sound easy,
but I'm sure there are moments in that book of
unusual situations and peculiar things in the skies. And we
won't even talk about the flight attendants. After all, he
(35:46):
was in the United States Air Force. His book is
My Life Above the Clouds, and Lieutenant Colonel Allen Bullet
Campbell calms everybody down.
Speaker 7 (35:55):
And we sure appreciate that.

When it comes to healthcare costs, we often focus on
one thing, our insurance premiums.
Speaker 7 (37:05):
But what if we're only seeing part of the picture.
Speaker 6 (37:07):
The truth is our health insurance costs reside downstream at
the end of the cost equation. But to really understand
what's driving up costs. We need to look upstream to
the healthcare system itself. Upstream, there are costs like the
price is charged by hospitals and doctors, and the cost
of prescription drugs, healthcare administration, and technology. These costs flow
(37:29):
downstream directly into your health insurance premium. That's why Blue
Cross Blue Shield of Michigan is advocating for a system
wide solution to address the rising cost of healthcare. Blue
Cross knows that healthcare is personal, needs to work for everyone,
and affordability matters, and that starts with shedding light on
the entire cost equation from upstream costs to downstream premiums.

Oakland dot Edu. That's Oakland University. Kamala Harris had another
meltdown on stage. It was just a week ago that
one of the protesters got to her and she got
up and yelled out, I am not the President of
the United States, and a very very similar response. So
I wonder if this is something that she's rolling out
and hear seeing to show her toughness, or does she
(40:02):
just get so upset when she's promoting her book and
somebody dares to protest from the crowd. It happened again.
And by the way, I'm playing this because Felix Sharp
Cavaliero warned Democrats about Kamala Harris long ago, and yet
she lingers here it is soon enough.
Speaker 11 (40:20):
And you know, I sometimes think about, you know what,
I am not president of the United States.
Speaker 31 (40:26):
You want to go to the White House and tom
to him, then go on and do that.
Speaker 7 (40:37):
She stood up and said it too.
Speaker 6 (40:39):
Felix, you know a lot about politics and the theater
of politics. Does that sound like something that she's rehearsed
and she's doing at her events, or a natural reaction
or a meltdown? What do you make of that?
Speaker 5 (40:52):
Well, Michael Patrick, she sounded pretty well in control of
her actions thererier it might be the start of her
campaign for the presidency in the next cycle.
Speaker 6 (41:04):
You think, maybe, am I being cynical or do they
sit in an office and say, all right, you got
to show some teeth. So somebody says anything, you stand
up and yell out that it's not your fault.
Speaker 7 (41:15):
You're not the president.
Speaker 5 (41:17):
I believe that this is Kamala Harris coming out of
Joe Biden's shadow. Finally, now that she's revealing what actually
happened behind closed doors, it.
Speaker 6 (41:29):
Must hurt a little bit to say those words, I
am not the president of the United States. When you're
going around telling everybody that it was the closest election
in history and that you're the most qualified candidate ever
to run. That's some schedule one gas lighting, isn't it.
Speaker 5 (41:45):
Well. She certainly has processed her pain and clearly she's
prepared to move forward. And I believe that that kam
Law is potentially preparing for another run.
Speaker 6 (42:00):
And if the Democrats came to you, as they often do,
for advice, what would you say to that?
Speaker 5 (42:06):
Michael Patrick long long ago stop coming to me for advice,
But I would suggest to them that it's time to
let the future begin.
Speaker 6 (42:16):
I see you received an award last week, and one
that you sort of shared not only with yourself, but
you dedicated to your family.
Speaker 5 (42:28):
Absolutely, my parents, Louis and Orlilah Sharp, who and my
father in nineteen sixty four, after working at Guantanamo Naval
Base in guy Maneta, Cuba, journey to the United States,
and then we followed a couple of years later and
the rest of his history. The Sharp family, we planted
(42:48):
our stake in the metropolitan Detroit area in Michigan and
now all over the world. And I'm grateful to them
for having given us the opportunity to live the American dream.
Speaker 7 (42:59):
The awards specifically.
Speaker 5 (43:00):
Was fiftieth anniversary the Global Michigan Hispanic Latino Commission Legacy
leader for the State of Michigan. So I'm humbly accept
and grateful.
Speaker 6 (43:16):
Thank you very much for sharing that with us too.
And you shared Havana with me and a couple of
my friends not too long ago. And I've been a
number of times, and one of the things that I
used to tell people is there is no crime because
if you're a tourist in Havana, they value you being there.
They value the money that you're bringing. And so Cubans
(43:38):
no better than to mess with anybody bringing money because
the government will take you away. They're very strict on crime.
But from what I'm reading now, the US Embassy has
issued an alert about increase crime in Havana and Cuba countrywide.
Speaker 5 (43:57):
That is a fact since the pandemic has seen a
change as needs have increased. Their significant water shortages in Cuba,
there are food shortages, there is no medicine, and the
currency has changed now whether the United States dollars the
primary currency rather than the Cuban pace or anything else.
(44:19):
So people are struggling and that struggle. As we know,
poverty and struggle generates crime, and that is the case
in Cuba these days. It's not the place where you
could walk at two three o'clock in the morning. Ten
years ago, it was rate at one of the safest
places to visit in the world. Cuba has changed, and
the United States Embassy has issued several alerts. In addition
(44:42):
to the fact that there are several diseases that are
now mosquito borne diseases that are infected the island as
well as all the Caribbean, and so there are several
alerts in place, and Americans need to travel carefully to
the Caribbean, to Cuba and actually across the world.
Speaker 6 (45:02):
Michael Patrick, I'm not sure if I should say their names,
but about fifteen years ago I was definitely up at
three am in Havana with people that you would know
who might be listening to this program at this moment,
and you know, having a mohedo and talking about the world,
and we felt perfectly safe. We were with Cubans, was quiet.
(45:26):
But you're saying that doesn't happen. Now we're looking at
an increase in pickpocketing, per snatching, petty crime, and even
armed robbery and homicide.
Speaker 5 (45:38):
That is a fact. It's no different in traveling. With
all due respect to Rome, which is the pickpocketing capital
of the world. Cupa has now, Cuba has now. It
was a protected society for so long, for sixty years,
but you know, capitalism has arrived to the island, and
(45:58):
when you create the have and the have nots, you know,
it creates problems.

Morning, world wow those are the names of three very
fascinating and. Historic Detroiters, dick perton the radio host FOR whom,
i worked that was. His voice and then we heard
the Voice Of, dennis archer the former Mayor, of detroit
And Then Coleman, young junior who was a, state legislator
and of course his father was the Mayor of detroit for.
(01:01:13):
Many years and we have somebody who is being celebrated
right Now in detroit on our radio STAGE r AT
And t line. Right now and this is on the
same weekend That Sho hey o'tani And the dodgers advanced
To The world series with a performance By Sho hey
o'tani that. Was astonishing three, home runs six, innings pitched
(01:01:37):
all in. One game the same, guy strikeouts, home runs all.
Speaker 7 (01:01:41):
Of it you just can't.

Finished The detroit marathon.

In two hundred and.
Speaker 6 (01:01:51):
Sixth place now you, might say wait, a minute two
hundred and six have you finished. A marathon it's Like Climbing.
Mount everest there were two nine and twenty four In The,
detroit marathon twenty six point, two miles and he did
it in three hours and twenty. Three minutes and he's
on our radio stage or right this, very moment because
(01:02:12):
we celebrate an achievement. Like This, clayton molinari thank you
for being here on the morning after a very very.
Speaker 7 (01:02:19):
Long day.
Speaker 44 (01:02:21):
Thank you for. Having me it was a the winds
were a little, bit tricky but. It was it was a,
beautiful day and, you know it.
Speaker 10 (01:02:30):
Was great thank you for having.
Speaker 6 (01:02:31):
Me up you understate it when you say the winds
were a little, bit tricky Because what i'm reading Is
This Detroit Free, press marathon which, you know goes through
the Streets of detroit and windsor had rain and gusty
winds challenging the runners throughout the forty eighth annual running of.
This RACE and i guess twenty six thousand registered participants were.
(01:02:53):
All involved when you add, up everybody some, of them
of course. Don't finish but when that air horn went
off at four And third streets In Downtown de troy
and those, soggy conditions how did you?
Speaker 7 (01:03:04):
Endure that?
Speaker 45 (01:03:07):
It was it was.
Speaker 44 (01:03:08):
Very interesting, you know it rained its hardest in. The
beginning it was definitely the windiest on that street going
up towards. THE bridge i was joking with the guy
next to me when we. Were running it was almost
like a hat cemetery because there's probably about six or
six to eight hats just lining the streets by the
time we got about a quarter. Mile in so it
(01:03:29):
was pretty funny. Seeing that but the main thing is
with the whole the whole day is, the volunteers like
really coming out there and, you know working through the.
ROUGH weather, i mean those volunteers did a great JOB
and i couldn't be more thankful. To them none of
us could have finished without them.
Speaker 6 (01:03:47):
Today, yesterday well now it's funny that you mentioned that because,
Your mother kelly posted what really moved her about you
completing that marathon was that after you went through all
that and you went through the twenty. Six miles you
went and physically thanked the volunteers who had been standing
in the rain for hours. And hours and she writes
(01:04:08):
that that small gesture says everything about the kind of person, you,
are humble kind and full.
Speaker 7 (01:04:14):
Of gratitude are you? Blushing?
Speaker 44 (01:04:15):
Yet oh she's my, biggest supporter and, you know on
that day it was amazing seeing her run across. The
CITY and i, Don't know she's just an amazing Woman
and i'm so happy to have her as my mother in.
Speaker 6 (01:04:30):
My life your father completed his own sort of marathon.
Speaker 7 (01:04:35):
Recently too was it five k for fifty?
Speaker 17 (01:04:37):
Straight days five k?
Speaker 28 (01:04:41):
Straight days.
Speaker 44 (01:04:41):
That's, correct yeah he was going through a he's going
through a, health hardship and once he was, through that
while he, was recovering he took on that journey and
that has been my main inspiration this summer. Seeing him
anytime it was an, LONG run i thought, to myself,
(01:05:01):
it's like my dad's out there fighting for his life
and still getting active and still being the active person
he wants.
Speaker 5 (01:05:07):
To be what's?
Speaker 10 (01:05:08):
My excuse so that was a it was.
Speaker 21 (01:05:11):
A great inspiration.
Speaker 17 (01:05:12):
To me he is.
Speaker 6 (01:05:15):
Did you practice On THE detroit i mean it's kind
of hard to run maybe city streets when they're not
closed off for. A marathon but how how close had
you come to running the twenty six point two before
you actually did it in?
Speaker 7 (01:05:27):
THE race.
Speaker 44 (01:05:29):
I WAS since i, LIVED downtown i was lucky enough
to every single morning be able to wake up and run.
The streets so the The, Kwinder cut i'm always running, down
THERE but i was able to do twenty miles Back.
In September and i've basically used All the American And adjusted,
american COURSE so i was pretty familiar with Running Through
(01:05:49):
indian village and through the through, the CITY so i
was a little bit more familiar with the with the
course than.
Speaker 6 (01:05:56):
Some, people hey young people love living Down, town detroit.
Don't they oh.
Speaker 44 (01:06:02):
It's amazing it's a great city and.
Speaker 28 (01:06:06):
Running.
Speaker 44 (01:06:07):
Through it honestly was seeing the amount, of SUPPORT which
i was. SO surprised i thought it would be, pretty
quiet But the Detroit faithful detroit locals really came out,
to SUPPORT so i was very thankful. For them it
was A beautiful it was a beautiful day for, those running,
for SURE but i mean it was.
Speaker 6 (01:06:27):
Really, Special well i've walked In The turkey trot a bunch.
Of times, THAT'S like i think six miles by the
time you're done.
Speaker 7 (01:06:35):
With it it doesn't.
Speaker 6 (01:06:37):
Really COMPARE but i get the idea that it's very
festive to go through our city and have people cheering
and people, in costumes and, you know people go about
it in. Different, ways you according to, your mother had
a lot of training, and perseverance and then there are
people involved in the marathon who just are enjoying. The
scene was it like that even with the weather the way,
(01:06:58):
It was.
Speaker 44 (01:07:00):
Oh, my goodness the people with. THE costumes i saw
a guy with a banana costume on it said.
Speaker 28 (01:07:04):
Just, steal OUT and i, was, like oh that's that's.
Speaker 44 (01:07:06):
So funny, you know everyone with the signs. And costumes
that really made it a, you know going, through it
you know you're feeling really bad and you look up
and you see a funny costume, like that it kind
of makes your day a little. Bit better it makes
the run a little bit feel a little, bit shorter
makes makes you feel like you're running a little. Bit
QUICKER so i definitely.
Speaker 6 (01:07:24):
Appreciate that when you Run, into canada do you have
to show a passport?
Speaker 7 (01:07:28):
Or Anything so we.
Speaker 44 (01:07:30):
Actually showed our passports when we got, our BID but
i ran with my. Passport CARD so i guess if
there was a problem where someone would have to, identify
you you would have to present a passport or some
form of enhanced, driver's LICENSE so i carried around my.
Passport card it's.
Speaker 28 (01:07:48):
Very interesting.
Speaker 44 (01:07:52):
My girlfriend Is, from windsor So i've i've crossed the
tunnel and bridged multiple multiple times over the last year and,
a half AND so i, WAS like i NEVER thought
i would run.
Speaker 28 (01:08:01):
Over it so doing that was.
Speaker 6 (01:08:03):
Very interesting which did you prefer the tunnel or the
bridge in terms?
Speaker 7 (01:08:07):
OF running.
Speaker 44 (01:08:10):
I think on a normal with, NORMAL conditions i would
have liked the. Bridge more but with the wind on,
THE uphill i DEFINITELY think i.
Speaker 7 (01:08:17):
Would have liked.
Speaker 28 (01:08:17):
THE tunnel i think the tunnel.
Speaker 6 (01:08:18):
Was better you knew you were going to finish or
is it something where what mile marker do you get
to when, you, Say.
Speaker 7 (01:08:24):
Yep i've got it?
Speaker 44 (01:08:28):
Twenty?
Speaker 28 (01:08:28):
Six?
Speaker 44 (01:08:30):
OH really i think at TWENTY six i, Was like
i'm going, To finish but at like twenty four, twenty
five with the wind coming Down, ON jefferson i always, feel, like,
UH oh i might have to, stop SOON but i
would just. Pulled through, you know at MILE fifteen i,
started STRUGGLING but i. Think that, you know once you
get in, twenty six, it's, like well there's no there's
a doubt about. To finish so that's when it kind
(01:08:51):
of hits you that you're.
Speaker 6 (01:08:52):
Gonna finish The flying molinari family and This Is clayton
molinari who Finished The detroit.

Ernest, hemingway said live the full life of, the mind
exhilarated by new ideas and toxic by the romance of.
The unusual And the american, literary giant who spent most
of his Youth In northern Michigan At, walloom lake viewed
death as a finality that provided a stark reality against
(01:13:16):
which to measure a. Person's life and he believed that
people are defined by how they face, this certainty and
that living in proximity to death was the way to
live life to.
Speaker 7 (01:13:28):
Its fullest he often wrote.
Speaker 6 (01:13:30):
About, it unfortunately we're talking about it this Morning Because
chris struble has. Passed Away chris Struble, from pataski who
frequented this program to Talk About, papa hemingway and he
Talked To papa hemingway about anyone who, would listen and
he furthered his legacy through tours and. Special events and
(01:13:55):
It was, september ninth twenty twenty four time we Spoke
With chris druble on the one hundred and twenty fifth
Anniversary of Hemingway At, walloon lake.
Speaker 21 (01:14:06):
Twenty three of those most. Influential summers what we think
of the great Things, of, hemingway, hunting fishing the love of,
the outdoors and most importantly that sense of adventure off
stemmed From. Northern michigan his first visit was one hundred
and twenty five. Years ago, and then of course he
was married twenty five percent of. His marriages the, first One,
the hadley would have Happened in september also of nineteen,
(01:14:26):
twenty one so we got two milestones that.
Speaker 6 (01:14:28):
Were Celebrating diana stanfler were morning. This morning she is
the President Of promote michigan and She Knew chris druble
very well and in fact introduced him to us in the.
First place i'm sorry about.
Speaker 48 (01:14:40):
The, news yes it's been a rough time. Of It,
Mike cohn i'm glad that we have those interviews to
keep his story To Keep chris's boys, out there To
keep he was such a wonderful Storyteller of Hemingway And
northern michigan and so many. Other THINGS and i met
(01:15:01):
him about ten years ago interviewing him for an Article
For Michigan. Blue magazine and we set an hour aside
for the interview at his Store Is Arlington jewelry store In.
Downtown potowski and five HOURS later i walked out of
that store because. We connected we Talked, about hemingway we talked,
about history we talked about the people we knew, in
(01:15:23):
common and all of the beautiful Things About northern michigan
And The. Upper peninsula and it created. This friendship it
brought me Into the. HEMINGWAY society, I mean i got this, Assignment, going,
OKAY yeah i know a little Bit. About hemingway but
he had an infectious smile and infectious laugh and an
(01:15:43):
infectious Love of hemingway that brought so many people into.
THAT fold.
Speaker 6 (01:15:49):
I don't even know how old, he was because he
spoke with such vigor About Young, ernest hemingway and he
reminded us all that it was a Very young hemingway
who wrote his very first short story called Up in
michigan In The walloo, lake area talking about Places like
mancellona and. So forth but how old was he and?
Speaker 7 (01:16:11):
What happened.
Speaker 48 (01:16:13):
Chris was, fifty eight and he. He struggled he was,
a brilliant, sensitive soul Much, like Hemingway and chris lost
his mom a few years ago and he could never write.
(01:16:33):
That ship he just could not, correct himself and depression
started to, creep in and in recent weeks it. Overcame
him there were several of us actively communicating, with him
(01:16:54):
and he promised us he wouldn't, hurt himself but something
at the end forced him to. Do so and so the,
mental illness the depression got the better of him at,
the end and he took his. Own LIFE and i
know that's going to be a shock to a lot.
(01:17:15):
Of people it was a shock. TO us i had
talked to him just days prior and set text messages,
of encouragement, you know these Words from hemingway to try
to let him know, that yes things, are dark but
there will. Be light there are people who, Love you
(01:17:36):
we're here to. Support YOU and i don't know there
WERE just i don't know that if there was anything
more we could. Have done and it breaks my heart
to know that he felt that there was no. Other,
answer unfortunately does it.
Speaker 7 (01:18:01):
Anger you a?
Speaker 6 (01:18:02):
Little bit the irony is not, the word but the
fact that that's The way hemingway and so many people
in that family met.
Speaker 7 (01:18:13):
Their, DEMISE.
Speaker 48 (01:18:16):
Yes, i mean, of course full of a lot of.
DIFFERENT emotions i am angry because he. Promised me he
promised me he would not, do this because we feared
it based on, some conversations and we fled out asked
him and he kept, ASSURING me i, LOVE life i love.
MY life i will not. Do anything and so it
(01:18:41):
was a shock but probably not a surprise to us when.
It HAPPENED but i also think the parallels between His and,
HEMINGWAY'S life i think in the back of his mind
probably played a role. In that, You know hemyway chastised
(01:19:03):
his father For doing he called him a coward for.
Doing it clarence had had recently, BEEN nagnosed, i believe
with diabetes and he didn't want to base all of that.
That Stuff and ernest was so angry with his father for,
doing that angry at his mother for her role and
(01:19:24):
her strong handedness in, the family and he struggled, with
that for he would never go out the way his,
dad did and yet. He DID but.
Speaker 17 (01:19:37):
I.
Speaker 48 (01:19:37):
FEEL bad I know chris is.
Speaker 10 (01:19:38):
At peace he's.
Speaker 48 (01:19:40):

Speaker 49 (01:21:57):
Are everywhere most of the time we don't too much,
about them and the number is growing now because there
are right now at least thirty major tunnel projects underway in,
the country totaling about fifty. Billion dollars so those are
being built, under cities, you know, through mountains underwater used,
for traffic, drinking water, storm waters so those. Are needed they're.

Speaker 6 (01:28:39):
With you we've been having a conversation about the affordability.
Of healthcare it's something that was talked about through the
entire oh legislative and congressional Career Of debbie stabinaw and
we'll be talking about it for. A while it, sounds,
like now how do we solve a national?
Speaker 17 (01:28:55):
Affordability, crisis well it's important for all, of us, to
consumers to understand that each one of us is part
of a, bigger system and, that system unfortunately for many,
of us is very.
Speaker 50 (01:29:07):
Expensive one and so we've talked to YOU and i
have talked on your show before about escalating healthcare costs
that are driving downstream health insurance. Premiums higher but we
all have a role to play. In that we've been,
talking about, for example how preventive care services and using
those preventive care services as individuals can enable us to lead,
(01:29:30):
our best most, healthy lives and that's important in a
system that is so expensive for us to use it
less by being, healthier people that's the whole, point anyway
that's the goal that we all, aspire to is to
be as healthy. As possible and so for all of
those free preventive care services that are involved in your health,
insurance plans free, wellness visits. Free vaccinations take advantage of
(01:29:53):
those services and also services such As Blue Cross, coordinated
care which we to all of. Our members that's twenty
four hour support around the clock for their. Health needs
if you, need advice call the Nurse At blue cross
will be happy to walk you through it and guide
you through your. Healthcare journey these are all steps that
all of us can take to, lead better more healthy
(01:30:15):
lives and cost less in the. Healthcare system by.
Speaker 6 (01:30:19):
Its, very name preventative care sounds like something that prevents problems,
from happening but if they, are happening it can also
help it from.
Speaker 50 (01:30:29):
Getting, worse absolutely and it's, so important as we've talked,
about before if you have a health condition that's serious,
and severe to identify that as early. As possible that
is when treatment is. Most successful and so the importance
of your regular, wellness visit even if you're not, feeling
(01:30:49):
sick going in to meet with your doctor for, that
checkup for, that screening if you have a family history,
of cancer, for example getting that annual, screening test getting your,
labs done looking inside. Your body you know what your numbers,
look like so your doctor can counsel you on what's
happening and what you can do about it to. Live
healthier and again that annual. Wellness visit if you're not,
(01:31:14):
feeling sick it's still important to go and make sure
that you're seeing your doctor once, a year to have,
that conversation to get those, tests on to make sure you're.
On track all of these things are things that we
as individuals can do to help not, only ourselves but
also keep the healthcare system more affordable for all.
Speaker 6 (01:31:34):
Of us you have provoked me to schedule my physical
when we get done with, THIS call i mean very
good putting, It off so thank you.
Speaker 7 (01:31:42):
Very much is that an example of?
Speaker 50 (01:31:44):
Self advocacy it is self advocacy. Really is it's making
sure that you are are advocating for your own. Best
interests so a good example of that is when you're
maybe in, the hospital right and you get prescribed a
test or a procedure in, the hospital it's okay for
(01:32:06):
you as a patient to ask your doctor or nurse
is that test? Really necessary you can also ask how
much will that test cost me an out of? Pocket
expense be your own advocate for how. You're feeling when
you're in and talking with, your doctor you need to
make sure that you're communicating clearly to your doctor about
(01:32:27):
everything that, you're feeling no matter, how minor so he
or she can help counsel you and maybe look into
something that they otherwise would not have had an inclinaian to.
Look into this is how we as patients can advocate
for ourselves in the medical process and come out of
that process feeling.
Speaker 6 (01:32:46):
Our best and you don't think the doctors would take offense.
To that in, other words they're prepared for these types.
Speaker 17 (01:32:52):
Of.
Speaker 50 (01:32:52):
Conversations absolutely they are, your partners. Your advocates your physician
is there to, help you and they can only help
you as much as they have the information that you can.
Provide them and so talk to your doctor about your,
Family history talk to your doctor about how you're, feeling
emotionally not. Just physically talk to your doctor about the
(01:33:14):
drugs that, you're taking perhaps prescribed by other positions that you've.
Met with make sure that they have complete information and
then they can work on your.
Speaker 6 (01:33:22):
Behalf better multiply that conversation you have by millions, of
times and you start to realize how you can actually
have an impact on, you know you don't want to
go through an unnecessary test if you don't, need it
and you don't want to take a medicine that maybe
is redundant or that you don't. Necessarily need so examine
your own health and be your. Own advocate and there

The, Airwaves Well, michael patrick how. Are you it's wonderful
to be back, with you particularly talking about, you KNOW
something i care so. Much about EVEN though i retired
From the Senate, IN december i wanted to stay involved.
In Healthcare so i'm just DOING what i can to
(01:40:40):
address what obviously is a very big deal for all.
Of US and i have, to say, you know my
mom at ninety eight a, year ago, Passed away god,
bless her and home health and hospice were. Absolutely CRITICAL
and i know every family has a story to tell
or a friend or family member that has a story
(01:41:00):
to tell about the importance of. Home health so they're
now suggesting for next year the largest Cut in medicare
home health ever and it doesn't make.
Speaker 7 (01:41:10):
Any, sense well you're.
Speaker 6 (01:41:12):
Not the type of person that runs to a microphone and,
a camera so when, you speak it's important to you
why is that cut coming and what can be done.
Speaker 7 (01:41:21):
About, it.
Speaker 55 (01:41:23):
Well first, of all there's a range, of cuts as,
you know being proposed or that are actually starting to
happen on healthcare that are very concerning. To me people
Who in michigan vibe insurance off of the marketplace exchanges
are going to see their costs. Go up Others on
medicaid and. So on in the area of, home health
(01:41:46):
there is just a, continuing effort and this is predominantly in,
this administration but has happened before in others where they
feel somehow that they can and cut rates on home
health care and it won't affect other parts of, health care,
you know and we know that that home health is
(01:42:07):
the least expensive way to, get care and you don't
save me money when you. Cut THAT so i wrote
this because there is actually an opportunity now to save
money the, right WAY and i am urging this administration to.
Do that OUT in la on the other side of,
the country there's this big fraud effort that they. Have
(01:42:29):
tackled state and federal folks doing a good job around
this ring basically of criminals that are putting in false
claims for hospice and home health and so on and
builking billions of dollars out of. The system and they're
actually taking, them on which is a, great thing but
they should be doing more, of that and they could
(01:42:51):
save more money by taking on fraud in the system
than by going after the, good folks, you know like
visiting nurses and the, you know the folks that do home.
Health care So what i'm doing is speaking out, in,
saying look you got an Example In los angeles where. There's,
fraud okay focus, On that focus on, other areas but
(01:43:12):
don't cut what is one of the most important pieces
of health care for families and individuals that actually. Saves money,
you know you don't spend more money if somebody's. At
home you're spending less money if somebody's. At home And
so i'm trying to get them to rethink how they
look at.
Speaker 6 (01:43:31):
All this your mother must have, been very very proud.
Speaker 28 (01:43:35):
Of, you.
Speaker 54 (01:43:37):
Well she.
Speaker 55 (01:43:38):
Was amazing she was my number one, role model and
she was, a nurse, You Know. MICHAEL patrika i actually
got interested in healthcare because mom was director of Nursing,
in claire small rural HOSPITAL where i. Grew up grew
up around, the HOSPITAL and i was always in awe
of the doctors and the nurses, and everybody and, you
(01:43:59):
know how much do they care? About people and that
really was what drew me. Into HEALTHCARE and i ended
up on the, policy side, you know not, a PROVIDER
but i don't care if it's, mental health healthcare above,
the neck or healthcare below. The neck, you know this
is something that everybody. Cares about everybody wants to make
(01:44:19):
sure they can afford and have. Quality care and it
takes a it takes, you know it takes a community to.
Do that you can't do that. By yourself there has
to be systems that. MAKE sense.
Speaker 6 (01:44:33):
I saw a video this Weekend of senator McConnell falling
down when he was walking Through. The capitol We Saw,
joe biden, the president sort of have very serious issues
now and even when he was In The, white house
and we have very advanced Members of Congress Like bernie sanders.
And such you decided not to stay, long past, you
(01:44:56):
know toward. The end does it see examples of people
that maybe are, you know staying?
Speaker 7 (01:45:04):
Too long, you know.
Speaker 55 (01:45:07):
IT does, i mean everybody has to make their. Own
CHOICE but i always wanted to Serve and i've loved
being in. THE center i love being in public Service,
in MICHIGAN, and i as, YOU know, i mean through
this will, BE bad i could still. BE there i
also am still using, my voice so Even though, I've
(01:45:27):
retired i'm still using. My VOICE but i do think,
that unfortunately this system creates incentives that are not always
in the, best interest because the longer, you're there the
more seniority you get the more you have an opportunity

our health insurance costs reside downstream.

Cost equation but to really understand what's driving, up costs
we need to look upstream to the healthcare. System, itself
upstream there are costs like the price is charged by hospitals,
and doctors and the cost of, prescription drugs, healthcare administration.
And technology these costs flow down directly into your health.

Thank you very much i'm told that you spent a
lot of time on The inland seas of Michigan Researching,
on the arthur anderson the boat that ostensibly could have
saved anybody if it could have gotten there.
Speaker 7 (02:02:26):
Just a little sooner?
Speaker 17 (02:02:27):
Is?
Speaker 7 (02:02:27):
That, WHAT happened uh.
Speaker 57 (02:02:29):
Yeah I Was on the arthur anderson Last Summer and
the wilfrid sykes last summer as. Well as this fall
and if you get a chance to get, one of
these ships file. Me to do it that's an. Experience like,
no other. But Basically excuse me the Anderson Was chasing
the amphis Jerald, That night. On monday november tenth they're.
About an hour, behind at One point if it's gerald's,
(02:02:52):
long and short radar. Both get knocked Out The lighthouse
at whitefish point that you're Trying To get to. Pat
lee went, out the radio beacon which tells you. Where
you are from that, lighthouse also Went out so the.
Fitzgeral was sailing blind so they waited An hour for the,
anderson to catch up but in that hour. The Ship. Was,
lost so anderson honestly, a ship like that, when it
(02:03:15):
goes down you hope to find maybe a couple, guys
in a raft but the. ODDS aren't very good I.
Speaker 7 (02:03:22):
Wonder why the anderson didn't. Meet the. Same fate.
Speaker 57 (02:03:26):
Few reasons one is, it was built differently so the flexibility. The,
ship was different two it may be when we talked about,
this in the book that mctorty might have gone. Over
six fathom's shoal that's a little patch in The Northeast
corner Of Lake, superior near cairbo island this little one
(02:03:46):
by three. Mile spit, of land the, lake as you
know it's otherwise, thirteen hundred feet. Deep but not there
so if it, went over that shoal then it. Might
have bottomed out so those are the two. Main Reasons
right There.
Speaker 6 (02:04:00):
The gales of November Is The book the Untold Story.
Of the edmund fitzgerald what? Is the untold part.
Speaker 57 (02:04:08):
About ninety? Five percent of, IT to be honest i
did not know FOUR years. AGO when i started, i
asked my wife my other books take me about a.
Year or two years this One TOOK me four and,
i asked my wife why's it? Taking me, so long.
She goes that's easy. HE didn't KNOW anything. I thought
i did i've sailed port here ON. The mack and
i i've been. IN all the lakes I Grew, up
on lake michigan and you think you know these things.
(02:04:29):
AND you really, don't i, didn't know For example that
the atlantic for shippers is not As Dangerous, as the
gray lakes and the guys who sailed in bows say,
it's not. Even close for example but the REAL untold
part is i managed to track down six former crew
members on The. End of, his gerald of course all
twenty nine that night went, down with the ship but
these six had served on the ship months and, a
(02:04:52):
FEW years beforehand so i was very. LUCKY to Find Them,
i found rick barthooley the Last Survivor of the arthur,
anderson from that night who could tell us as close
as we can get what it was like on that
night on the lakes That. Night for THE fitzgerald and
then i got to half half of the twenty nine
families who spoke to a reporter. For the first time
(02:05:12):
so that's a lot.
Speaker 36 (02:05:13):
Of.
Speaker 57 (02:05:13):
Untold right there.
Speaker 6 (02:05:16):
Wow everybody thinks when, you write a book You sit
in northern michigan in your house and you look out
the window. And you type away look at that kind
of research and effort and reporting that you had to
do in order. To write this tone the man Who
Was on the arthur anderson did did he say?
Speaker 7 (02:05:34):
THAT he was scared i asked, Him.
Speaker 57 (02:05:37):
That Exact, question patrick. Michael patrick that, is and he paused.
And he said concerned these guys are. Hard to get
to and it's kind, OF like, the pilots i mean
very much like the pilots on our, planes when, you're,
going you know bouncing but down one hundred feet and
the pilot's signed with that, languid, voice and says, hello
(02:05:58):
ladies and gentlemen, there's a pilot here and we're. Experienced a,
Little turbulence well okay and that's what. These guys are
like but he did say that more concerned than he.
Ever had been before and it was the worst storm
in his forty years in the seas. That he ever
saw it was the, storm. Of the century truly and
to answer your earlier question, with a bit more as one,
of my experts said by being one Hour, ahead of the,
(02:06:19):
anderson Through dumb luck the fitzgerald ended up going to,
the exact wrong place at, the exact wrong time where
the epicenter of the storm was one hundred mile per
hour winds and waves that were probably forty to fifty and.
Even sixty feet high and this thing's only eleven feet.
Out of the water so that's.
Speaker 6 (02:06:37):
What, you're up against, Well in the song, captain, mc
sarley says fellas it's too, rough to feed you, and
then he says it's been. Nice to know you do
you think Those sailors on the fitzgerald had any idea
that they were going?
Speaker 7 (02:06:51):
To, meet, their demise well actually.
Speaker 57 (02:06:53):
As the cook who says, that in the song but
doesn't matter as far, As the demise goes i've asked
that question and clearly if, we can only guess but the,
strong hunch is. No they did not because mc story
the Best Captain. Of the great lakes he's. Sixty three
years old he's about to retire after this, run in
(02:07:14):
three days and so are. Five of his lieutenants if
he had ten seconds TO, get out an sos he
would have done.
Speaker 21 (02:07:20):
So with his.
Speaker 57 (02:07:21):
Coordinates. He didn't do so, the lifeboats were secure the.
Life rafts were secure we only know of one crewman who.
Wore a life jacket. All these tell, us at the
end when it came was. Almost certainly very quick have
you ever.
Speaker 7 (02:07:35):
Been in a big?
Speaker 6 (02:07:36):
Storm on a boat, not like that man.
Speaker 57 (02:07:40):
And not, EVEN close in fact i got An invitation
of the syke to come back This fall because in
november you will get a storm and you. Will GET
some waves but i was writing a book. With MY
lame alibi but i should HAVE done it. If I
could so but. I'll tell you what IF You're on
the ss Badger going From A MUSKEGAN, to grand rap Toai,
(02:08:01):
maybe it's the badgers. Maybe's the other one if at five,
feet or more waves they don't go out because land
lovers like you and. Me will lose it we. Can't
handle five, footers and these, are you know again, thirty
forty fifty footers so and these guys. Almost never get
sick so it's a different breed of person who takes these,
trips on a.
Speaker 7 (02:08:21):
Lake on a lake. Not even an ocean it's. A, very.
Speaker 6 (02:08:25):

says earth only has ten percent.
Speaker 58 (02:16:33):
Of Its lifespan left if earth has been around for
four and, a half billion years which is what, the
Fossil record suggests then earth only has about ten percent
more life in it before it gets so hot. That
life is impossible.

And you're going to be the guy to put us
closer to where we need to Be.

It's about creating a Self sustaining city on mars with
the fundamental folk in the road Of destiny being that
mars is sufficiently self sustaining and can grow by itself
if The resupply shifts from earth stopped, coming for any
reason whether that is because civilization died with. A bang
(02:17:23):
or whimper but if if the resupply Ships are necessary,
for mars to survive then we have. Not created life
insurance we've, not created life. Insurance but life collectively so
that's that's the key point in the future where destiny
of life as we know it, will forever Be affected

Shaming see that poker face is one of those phrases
that comes from the game that has sort of went
into pop culture and it has. Meaning beyond the game poker.
Has its own language and to try, To Sort through
that nick clark is with us the poker Shift Manager
(02:27:42):
at fire Keepers Casino With. Me Michael, patrick shields fire,
keepers as you know is on nine ninety four right where.
Sixty nine crosses in they have all. Sorts of other
games but the poker room kind of an intriguing, place
WITH intriguing people and i mean POKER even. Is on
tv now it's like a and you see, some people
very serious you see some people.
Speaker 7 (02:28:04):
A little more casual you see.
Speaker 6 (02:28:06):
Poker going ON there and so I Want to ask
nick clark about some of these phrases that have sort
of made their.
Speaker 7 (02:28:11):
Way into the lexicon thank you for being here and. Welcome,
to the program?
Speaker 17 (02:28:16):
Hello how are you what is the what does?
Speaker 7 (02:28:18):
It mean to.
Speaker 10 (02:28:19):
Bluff, to bluff, would be you know when, you're betting
without anything when you you don't, have a good hand
but you're betting that, your opponent will fold betting that
they don't have, a good hand also.
Speaker 6 (02:28:35):
So you kind of trick them into thinking you've got something. When, you,
Really don't right right.
Speaker 7 (02:28:42):
What is?
Speaker 6 (02:28:43):
Meant by all in because we, hear that in business we,
hear it in poker we. Hear it in relationships, when
you're all?
Speaker 7 (02:28:50):
In? What is, that.
Speaker 10 (02:28:52):
Well in poker you only have a set of mountain.
In front of you you, can't pull you know more
money out of your pocket when you when you, Run
out at chips so all in would be one when
you're betting all of your chips that you, have on
the table whatever is. In front, of you.
Speaker 6 (02:29:07):
It's dramatic isn't it you push them all out there
and it's it's do or, die, At, that, stage right.
Speaker 10 (02:29:12):
Yes yes very dramatic speaking.
Speaker 6 (02:29:16):
Of do or die this is an. Old phrase from
poker but dead man's hand.
Speaker 10 (02:29:23):
That ace eight is known as, the dead man's hand
the hand That they say wild bill was holding when
he was Shot and dead would.
Speaker 6 (02:29:34):
So if you, get aces and eights you've got. The
dead man's hand you can win with, that, though still.
Speaker 10 (02:29:39):
Right yeah depending.
Speaker 5 (02:29:41):
On what's out there.
Speaker 7 (02:29:45):
That's.
Speaker 6 (02:29:45):
The trick of it you don't know until you see.
Maybe sometimes the flop?
Speaker 7 (02:29:50):
What is The.
Speaker 10 (02:29:51):
Flop So, in texas hold them the dealer puts. Out
five community cards those are the. Cards that everybody shares
the first three cards of that of those five cards.
Are called the flop that's the, first street of betting
(02:30:11):
and that's.
Speaker 7 (02:30:12):
Followed by the? River? Is that right.
Speaker 10 (02:30:15):
Nope the flop is, followed by the turn which. Is
the fourth card there would be another street, of betting
after that and then the river is the final.
Speaker 7 (02:30:23):
CARD of the board i wonder why. It's, called the.
Speaker 10 (02:30:27):
River honestly to, TELL you the. Truth i don't know
i've never. LOOKED that one up. I.
Speaker 6 (02:30:34):
Know It's Fun though texas hold them is the game
really that is mainly Played at the.
Speaker 7 (02:30:39):
Fire keeper's casino? Room?
Speaker 21 (02:30:41):
Is that right.
Speaker 10 (02:30:42):
Yeah, for The Most Part. It's texas hold them we
also play A Game. Called Pot limit omaha So Omaha Is,
basically texas hold them except for you get four cards
in your, hand instead of two and you have to
use two cards out of your hand and three. Cards
on the board.
Speaker 6 (02:31:01):
When you Talk, about texas and, omaha what you know
we see poker In a. Lot of western movies is
that why those, games aren't named?
Speaker 7 (02:31:08):
That, do you, think.
Speaker 10 (02:31:11):
Yeah you know poker Originated Out, in the old west
and a lot of those you know poker players are
original poker players that invented the games and stuff. ARE
from those areas.
Speaker 6 (02:31:25):
I THINK the first time i ever saw poker in
a Movie Was in a Dean Martin Movie. Called seven
cards stud but that's, not played in casinos or at Least,
not at? Fire keepers is?
Speaker 7 (02:31:34):
It or is it.
Speaker 10 (02:31:37):
Occasionally we do get A Game. Of seven cards stud
it's not a regular game that doesn't happen every day,
or even, every week but yeah occasionally we. Do get
a game.
Speaker 6 (02:31:48):
What is meant by the bad beat or? The, bad Beat.
Speaker 10 (02:31:51):
Jackpot actually fire keepers no longer runs, A, bad beat,
Jackpot no but no but what a bad beat is
is most places, will set a qualifier so something that
would be really hard. To get beat, with usually it's,
quads so you know, four of a kind but some
(02:32:14):
places it, could be you know, just A full house Like,
Aces full of kings so if you, have one of
those you know. You have, that hand or better let's
Say the room's qualifiers. Aces FULL of kings if i
have aces full of KINGS or better and i, STILL
lose the hand i would win. The bad beat jackpot?
Speaker 6 (02:32:33):
What would you say and. OF course it's not i.
Mean it depends greatly but what is a decent hand
where you should stay in with and maybe, the opposite
you know? When should you fold.
Speaker 10 (02:32:47):
It all depends. On what you're playing there's there's. Different
variations of poker we, have live cash games which is
in every chip is worth. A set dollar mountain you
can sit down, and play one hand or you could
play for two days. If you wanted to, or we
have tournaments which tournament chips are. Not cash value chips
(02:33:12):
you can't go up to the window. And cash them
out you're trying to play, down to the end and
whoever has all the chips at the. End is gonna
win so it's more. Of A situational thing but i
mean there are. Obviously stronger starting hands most people, like
to you know wait for like an ace ten or you,
(02:33:32):
know an, ace jack ace queen ace king or possibly
a PAIR.
Speaker 6 (02:33:38):
What is and i understand This, is Coming In November.
The black Chip Bounty.
Speaker 10 (02:33:45):
So the black chip bounty is a poker. Tournament that
we run it's a three. Hundred Dollars buy In it's
saturday and november. First, at twelve o'clock again that's a three,
hundred dollars buy in and, it's a bounty tournament so
every time, you knock somebody out you. Would get their
bounty every time you take, all of their chips you,
would get their bounty and their bounty is, Worth one
(02:34:06):
hundred dollars so every time, you knock somebody out you're.
Getting one hundred dollars and then, there's also you know
a prize pool at the end for the top twelve.
Percent of our, field so you know if we, get
one hundred players we're paying twelve players a price that
players start with, twenty five thousand chips and the blinds go,
(02:34:29):
up every thirty minutes so, when you, sit down you
know it's one, price to play poker and, then in
thirty minutes the blinds go up and, the price, gets more,
you know gets higher and then every thirty minutes that
continues to happen till eventually it forces everybody to get those.
Chips in the pot, because in a tournament you're trying
to play down and see who gets all the. Chips
(02:34:51):
at the end.
Speaker 6 (02:34:53):
