Speaker 1 (00:10):
All right, this is our old friend Larry Santos from Detroit,
and he was a performer, but he was very famous
for singing jingles. As you're hearing him sing right here
(00:30):
for Budweiser, I miss him. I wonder what he's up
to these days. But I mean he's sang for McDonald's
and wind Song and lots of other big companies, car companies,
to beer, et cetera. And you might remember, if you
go all the way back to nineteen eighty five, the
year I graduated high school, Larry Santos singing this jingle
(00:53):
for the world wide giant company called Whirlpool from right
here in Michigan.
Speaker 2 (00:58):
Good days go by your work never seems to. That's
why Whirlpool refrigerators are designed to make your world a
little easier. Our most advanced model has a new monitoring
and control system you can program from maximum cooling and
our famous no fingerprint doors, Whirlpool quality appliances.
Speaker 3 (01:23):
Les easy.
Speaker 1 (01:28):
Jeff Fedegg was the chair and CEO of the Whirlpool Corporation,
and he is on our AT and T line right
now with a big list of credentials now including founder
of a golf course. Thank you for being here and
welcome to the program.
Speaker 3 (01:44):
Well, that's pleasure to be here, Michael.
Speaker 1 (01:47):
You have a big day today. You're gonna unwrap yet
more development at Harbor Shores in Saint Joe Benton Harbor,
where we're heard on the radio of course on WSJM.
So happy birthday. What's the project?
Speaker 3 (02:00):
Well, Michael, is an exciting day here. We're going to
have our what we're calling our soft opening for our
new golf course here at Harbor Shores. We call it
the Weak Course. It's a short course, chipping putt, it's
a par three. Someonould call it a miniature golf course,
but it's really designed to make golf both accessible and
(02:24):
affordable for everyone. So we're very excited to add that
as a great amenity to our Harbor Shores resort.
Speaker 1 (02:32):
I don't want to embarrass you, but where did the
funding for that come from?
Speaker 3 (02:37):
All private donations? You know, we have a great community,
very supportive of doing things to develop the community, companies, individuals, foundations.
We've been able to raise one hundred percent of the
monies locally.
Speaker 1 (02:57):
The Fedeg Family Foundation was a big part of that.
Is the part that I meant and I know you'll
be modest about that, but thank you for that.
Speaker 3 (03:06):
Well, it's it's our pleasure. We believe in this community
and we believe in you know, golf is a vehicle
to helping kids, families, friends, really have an enjoyable time
in our area.
Speaker 1 (03:19):
So this is a way that golf can be accessible
to those who maybe don't want to strap up for
eighteen holes, maybe don't have the time, the money, or
the patients were around like that, or the skill for
that matter, to be able to play and feel the
green grass and enjoy themselves with their family of all ages.
Speaker 3 (03:38):
Right, that sure is I mean, you know, a golf's
great sport for those who take it seriously. It's I
would I would say, you know, it does take you know,
four plus hours play around the golf. It's although we
think Harbor Sorees for example, is a great value, it's
not inexpensive in it. It's it's a championship course. We've
(04:01):
had six major golf championships here and it's a true
test of golf, and it's I would say it can
be hard at times for a golfer. And you know
the weak courses, every bit is great designed and maintained
as the big course, but you know it's a what
(04:24):
we call it chipp and putt course. I mean the
holes range from twenty yards to eighty yards of the maximum.
If you want, you can use a putter and putt
around the entire course. It probably takes less than forty
five minutes to play nine holes. We've got it's set
up so there's two t's, an upt and a back
(04:44):
tee for you know, whatever level of difficulty you want
to try on this. But the thing I would say is,
I mean this is a great design. Colin Montgomery, who's
a champion here at Harbor Shores from Scotland, has designed
it and is very passionate putting his mark here and
(05:05):
bringing a little bit of Scotland here to southwest Michigan.
We've got a fifteen thousand square foot putting and green
which is a great place just to come out and putt. So,
you know, we think this is for non golfers, for kids,
for families, for friends, or for excellent golfers who just
want to come out here in practice. So it really
is something for everyone. Again, you can play golf for
(05:28):
half an hour, you can play all day here.
Speaker 1 (05:31):
Are there any Jeff fedig design elements. Did you collaborate
at all with montienca Hey money? How about you know
something here?
Speaker 3 (05:40):
Well, he and I had to get to walk the
course a little bit and shared a few notes back
and forth, and I would say that he actually happened
to agree with the out a couple of points, and
we extended a couple of agrees. We put what we
call it pro tier on a couple of the greens.
(06:03):
But all in all, this is a This is a
Colin Montgomery design. And you know he's a he's one
of the best European champions ever. And you know from
being from Scotland, this is he grew up with these
kind of little courses in every village is and he
really understands what it takes to bring a community together.
(06:24):
And that's what really this is designed for.
Speaker 1 (06:27):
Business leaders from Michigan has been talking lately about innovation,
how it's central to Michigan's story, turning big ideas into
lasting impact. And you certainly have done that at Harbor
Shores in your time. Of course, as the CEO and
chairman of the Whirlpool Corporation, I know that Pebble Beach
and Pinehurst have built we courses like this, so why
(06:49):
not Harbor Shores and congratulations on that. How much will
it cost to play?
Speaker 3 (06:56):
You know, there's a lot of different programming we're doing there,
but in essence, we just put out in the rates today.
In fact, it'll be thirty dollars to play nine holes
and putt. If you want to play it another nine
it's an extra ten dollars. If you want to play
all day, it's fifty dollars. You know, we got it
set up so kids twelve and underplay free with their
(07:19):
parent or pay an adult. Teams pay about half prize,
So we've got something for everyone here, and we really
think it's just going to offer a great value for kids,
families and friends to really have an enjoyable day or
evening of entertainment.
Speaker 1 (07:40):
Why is it like Jeff Fedegg to retire from a
worldwide job like chairman and CEO of the Whirlpool Corporation.
Speaker 3 (07:50):
Well, I mean, you know, I had it was very
fortunate to have a great almost forty year career at
a great company with great people, and I enjoyed every
minute of it, and you know, it's just been a
very positive part of my life. But since retiring I
tell you I'm not really retired. I just choose to
do other things right now. And you know, now I'm
(08:14):
you know, I basically work half the time and half
the time I get to work on great projects like
the week Horse. So it's a really good balance in
my life. I've got kids and seven grand kids, and
I can't wait to play golf with them on the
week Horse.
Speaker 1 (08:31):
Well, you'll open the place today and make some special
remarks and hopefully there'll be a hole in one out
there today and maybe you'll be even the one to
get it. So we wish you good luck and congratulations,
and thank you for the constant contribution to Pure Michigan
and in this case to Harbor Shores and especially to
Saint Joe Benton Harbor, and to the world, making the
(08:53):
world a little easier and making golf a little easier.
Whirlpool makes it easier for you.
Speaker 4 (09:00):
