Speaker 1 (00:12):
Welcome back to Mission Point Resort, Michael Patrick Shields. We
have two very special guests here at the resort, and
we're standing at the bar. It may sound like it too,
the Lilac Lounge and the Chianti restaurant. We got some piano,
we got some champagne and some delicious food. John Clement says,
you know by now is the executive chef here at
Mission Point Resort. We hear from him too when he's
(00:34):
at Augusta National. And it's interesting, Chef, because you've got
Stephen Frank next to you. Stephen Frank is the grounds
manager at Mission Point Resort from East Lansing, is correct.
And St.
Speaker 2 (00:45):
Thomas Saint Thomas Aquinas Parish.
Speaker 1 (00:49):
And this is your summer gig.
Speaker 2 (00:51):
Huh third season here at Mission Point and what a
glorious time to be here anytime? Yes?
Speaker 1 (00:58):
So did you retire? No?
Speaker 2 (01:01):
I'd spent ten years in the grounds department at Michigan
State University and four running the department at the University
of Chicago.
Speaker 1 (01:10):
Wow.
Speaker 2 (01:11):
Yeah, so this is my sliding out of the workforce gig.
Speaker 1 (01:19):
Well, that's sure as high profile. Do you make you nervous?
Speaker 2 (01:24):
No, the expectations are very high, but it's a fun
place to work, very collaborative. The benefits here are fantastic.
Where else can you look out your window and see
the straits of Mackinac every morning, take your dog out,
chase the birds off the line.
Speaker 1 (01:45):
You know, we were talking about creativity quite a bit
today because art and the scenery and the music. Of course,
we just heard from David Jasmine, and we'll hear one
more before we go. But creativity is why you do
what you do.
Speaker 2 (01:59):
It's a big part of it. The freedom to sort
of express yourself in the landscape. For instance, we're sort
of transitioning from the bulb season to the spring flower season,
and you can still get up here and see the bulbs.
You come into the front entrance off Main Street, you're
going to see stop the car tulips?
Speaker 1 (02:21):
Were there? No cars? Thank god? Are there probably be
accidents from people, you know, craning their necks at them.
How many tulips would you even have? A guest? Yes, sir.
Speaker 2 (02:29):
We put fifty thousand new ones in this last fall,
and then another fifty thousand from last season in the
far flung area, so we've got more bulbs in the
ground this year than I believe we've ever had.
Speaker 1 (02:43):
Are you growing anything that chef cooks?
Speaker 2 (02:47):
Right outside here? We have an edible garden, tibes, all
kinds of herbs, put in some strawberries last year blueberries?
Speaker 1 (02:58):
Do they make it to the plate and make it
to the plate here in Kiante? No kidding? Yes, Now
that's pressure. Now it's one thing. You got a nice
colored tulip. You're dealing with commerce here.
Speaker 2 (03:09):
All organic, all organic fertiliz either no chemical.
Speaker 1 (03:13):
And when chef comes out to inspect, you go out
there and look, you know what you're looking at. In
that case, yes, we do yese pressure. Indeed, he's not
around at that time.
Speaker 2 (03:23):
I don't want to help carry people out of the restaurant.
Speaker 1 (03:27):
And what is it they like to? What do we
eat here? That's farm to a table?
Speaker 3 (03:32):
In Kiante, almost everything that's on the table is farm
the table.
Speaker 1 (03:36):
Wow, and pea's in at risotto last night? That is correct,
and that was delicious, That is correct.
Speaker 3 (03:41):
And then at her other restaurants, about sixty percent right
here in the garden is farm the table. Or from
northern Michigan area.
Speaker 1 (03:50):
Where does the fish come from? And what do you feature.
Speaker 3 (03:53):
The most mostly the fish that we serve, you know,
of course, is white fish, walleye and perch all Northern
Michigan and staples. They come right from out here. Our
whitefish are from Lake Superior. Our perch and our walleyre
here from Lake Michigan and Lake here.
Speaker 1 (04:11):
On beautiful stuff?
Speaker 2 (04:12):
Do you ever get to dine in here one of
these days?
Speaker 4 (04:16):
See?
Speaker 1 (04:16):
It's aspirational, isn't it?
Speaker 2 (04:18):
That will be quite a bonus.
Speaker 3 (04:20):
He keeps growing the good stuff and maybe we'll let
him sneak in.
Speaker 1 (04:23):
Wait, I didn't know you were growing good stuff out here? Where?
Speaker 2 (04:25):
Is it?
Speaker 1 (04:27):
Just kidding?
Speaker 3 (04:28):
The chives and the time and the same I got you.
Speaker 2 (04:31):
It also uses lilacs during the lilac season, Oh yeah,
and the drinks and in some of the dishes.
Speaker 1 (04:37):
Well, that is very definitely the flower of the island,
isn't it? If it isn't geraniums or tulips here though,
fifty thou well, thank you very much both of you,
and congratulations on your success. When somebody leaves after dinner
and you hear them, maybe in the hallway, when they're
walking out, what do you want to hear them say?
What have you heard them say?
Speaker 3 (04:55):
What a great meal that they had, what a great
experience they had. And it's all really because I have
a eight team.
Speaker 1 (05:01):
See, it's very sweet of you. Including are we in
the ground? Oh yes, Ron Heinrix has come all the
way here to come to Keyanti. He's from downriver, as
you know by now. He's the president and CEO of
the Southern Wayne County Regional Chamber and he loves boats.
Jasmine Dancy said you were a boat nerder.
Speaker 4 (05:21):
Oh well, geez, I'm a little bit offended by that
word nerd.
Speaker 1 (05:26):
You know what maya for Rick Snyder? It's a urd. Well,
I guess I should.
Speaker 4 (05:31):
Run for governor now, huh. I better not start any rumors.
Michael Patrick, I gotta say a couple of segments ago.
We're sitting right now. We're sitting here, Sue by the way,
she had to leave. Let me trust we're sitting at
one of the most beautiful resorts in all of Michigan.
There's fifty thousand tulips outside the window. We're on the
beautiful shores of Lake Huron. And you say, if we
(05:53):
see a freighter go by, what would the music be?
The soundtrack free and you have the maestro play a
ballad about one of the most devastating, horrific, tragic ten seconds.
Speaker 1 (06:05):
Would you want to be great Lakes maritime history? And okay,
I will say I was.
Speaker 4 (06:11):
I love Gordon Lightfoot and that's one of my favorite songs,
the wrec of the m and Fitzgerald. But maybe that's
not what we should be thinking about, right.
Speaker 1 (06:20):
Uh, it's a bit macab but got your attention for sure.
Tony has a present for you that we got. We
spent all day in the kitchen baking.
Speaker 4 (06:29):
Ye. Yeah, oh my wow, that's beautiful.
Speaker 1 (06:32):
Wow.
Speaker 4 (06:33):
What is it?
Speaker 1 (06:34):
Well, there's a freighter on the front.
Speaker 2 (06:37):
Yeah, there is.
Speaker 1 (06:38):
It's gorgeous. Thank you, thank you.
Speaker 4 (06:40):

Speaker 4 (06:47):
There's a lot of great political leaders, business leaders, non
profit leaders. Uh. I don't know about you, but I
got my fisher invitations to different receptions and talked about
a lot of different policy issues which there's no shortage
and you know, things that we need to tackle as
leaders in the state of Michigan.
Speaker 1 (07:04):
Today. Well circle back, say hid everybody down river and
we are going to have the talent of David Yasmin.
I don't know if he's going to play Wreck of
the Edmond Fitzgerald for you, because it's a great sign.
But we're going to get the close out the program
with a fine talent. And maybe you like this better
look out there. Imagine you're on the freighter on a
(07:24):
deck chair, maybe, oh well, with a candor Iron City beer,
whatever the I is on the boats.
Speaker 4 (07:30):
If you're a duckhand, you better get ready for some work.
