with Michael Patrick Shields through the AT and T Microphones.
La Pacha sia kon tutti voi all are welcome in
medias dot virtus. The truth is in the middle and
politics is our family business, and we take the work seriously.
We do not take ourselves seriously. And that's why when
we had Susie Avery on the air just a couple
(01:45):
of minutes ago, we just decided to tell her we
loved her. And this is a new bit that I'm
starting right now. Tony Cuthbert, do you think it's schmaltzy
just to call someone out of the blue every day
and say nothing more than a I just called the
I love you Stevie wonderstyle.
Speaker 3 (02:02):
I don't think it is unless we get a line
of people reacting like Suzie Avery.
Speaker 2 (02:07):
Suzie Avery, when I told her, hey, I just called
to say I love you, here's what she said. That's it.
Speaker 3 (02:15):
I mean, that is such you are still not It's
such a bogus thing.
Speaker 2 (02:22):
I mean it from the bottom of my heart. Susie.
She react like that, she didn't believe me, and you
know she was the chair of the Michigan Republican Party.
Coming up a little later, we'll have the Republican National
Committee Chair Ron McDaniel, and we're only going to do
it once a day. Kyle Malin, the editor of Murr's
News m i r Snews dot com, is on our
(02:44):
line right now, and since we already did it once today,
we're not going to do it to you. Do you
think it's schmaltzy? And what did you think of Suzie
Avery's response?
Speaker 3 (02:54):
It sounded a lot like Susie Avery kind of steers
away from affection a little bit, isn't What was cynical
appreciated that what was cynical.
Speaker 2 (03:06):
Nonetheless, well, do you think you know it's it's a
week when we're celebrating radio, particularly on Friday, we're going
to dedicate the entire program to saluting radio because it
was the anniversary of the passing of J. P. McCarthy.
But do you think that's a small sy bit to
call someone every day and say, hey, I just called
to say I love you.
Speaker 3 (03:26):
I don't know, maybe maybe it's just something that we
should all do you know, Maybe maybe maybe it's something
that we all we all got to think about, especially
when people pass, you know, it kind of gets you
a little introspective, you know, So I don't know, I
give it a drive.
Speaker 4 (03:44):
Thank you.
Speaker 2 (03:45):
Speaking of people passing and J P. McCarthy, there were
many times that I called Jerry crandall to get him
on the line to speak to J. P. McCarthy, because
he was the lottery commissioner. And we now learn in
reading it in Murr's News, in fact, your public had
that he died at the age of eighty six.
Speaker 3 (04:03):
Yeah, you know, that was really sad because Jerry Crandall
was a regular at Murr's when I started in two
thousand and one many people don't maybe don't realize, but
Jerry was our first administration reporter after he retired from
state government, and then after he was done reporting, he
(04:25):
stuck on as an advisor for US. So I learned
quite a bit from Jerry over the years. And it
was a great manor. And it was said to have
to report on Friday that he had died.
Speaker 2 (04:40):
You right in Murr's News that you spoke to his
daughter Don Crandall, and she talked about that work that
he had done for Merz and that he'd done in
the state government, and that he said to her, Don,
none of that was work. That was fun.
Speaker 3 (04:53):
Yeah, I could hear Jerry say that. You know, he
really enjoys his career.
Speaker 2 (04:58):
You know.
Speaker 3 (04:58):
He started off as a TV reporter at Channel two,
and he talked to us before about reporting during the
Detroit riots and how challenging that was. And then he
was press secretary for Dick Headley when he ran for
governor in eighty two. He liked telling stories about that
Jack Lausman in eighty four, and then was a communications
(05:20):
director for the Republicans for the Senate and the House,
and then in between those stints he was the Lottery
Commission and chief of staff for John Engler when England
was the Majority leader. So he had a very long
career in communications, and you know, I had a lot
of knowledge to share on both ends as a reporter
(05:43):
and as someone who was helping public policy and having
to work with media.
Speaker 2 (05:49):
Well, I do love you and I appreciate sometimes when
you'll see that a guest is coming on, you might
send me a message at say, hey, MPs, you may
consider asking acts And sometimes I don't see it in time,
and then I'm really frustrated because your questions are always
better than mine. But with Ronald McDaniel coming up, what
would be the question for the former Republican National Committee
(06:09):
Chair who I was at that event in Traverse City
with the Republicans this weekend, and as you know, she's
the CEO and now of the Michigan Forward Network. What's
the question for her?
Speaker 3 (06:21):
You know, I'm thinking a head to the macdonc conference
in September. I would ask her what kind of help
or guidance she would give Jim Runstead to, you know,
help pull that event off. You know that that event's
kind of shrunken popularity, and you know with the former
chair Christina Caromo. She darnear killed it. You know, I
(06:44):
would ask if it's still relevant in two thousand and
twenty five as far as raising money, you know, you know,
and also in the years past, they've had some real
big names folks running for president, and I know nobody's
really running for president right now in twenty twenty five,
but you know, it's still still seems a little weak
on the firepower department. So yeah, I would just ask
(07:07):
her if that conference is still relevant, and you know,
if maybe they should be looking at something else or
or partnering with the group that she's working on right
now with the Devauge.
Speaker 2 (07:16):
Family, consider it, asks Kyle Malin, editor m Irsnews dot com.
Thank you very much. We could not have a show
without his publication that deep dives on Michigan politics and
greats like Jerry.
