Speaker 1 (00:03):
Whoto. When I'm backing her arms, she smiles, and then
I am home again, Eli, my lady. Broadcasting from our
Hollywood studios this morning. It's Michael Patrick, Shields and Beverly Hills, California,
(00:23):
on radio stations across the state of Michigan and worldwide
at m I Bigshow dot com. And so I do
a little acting on the side, you see. And in
addition to hosting this radio show on thirteen stations across
the state of Michigan and streaming audio and podcasting at
AMI Bigshow dot com, I'm a travel writer and columnist
(00:43):
and author and a little bit of acting too. And
can you imagine my surprise when I got booked for
a Netflix project and I was told I'm going to
play a school principal and the shoot was in Burbank
at Burbank High School. So I showed up there. And
when I got to Burbank High School and walked through
(01:04):
the set looking for the holding areas and costuming and
makeup and all that, I looked at the signs on
the wall and I said, Beal City. So wait a minute,
Beal City, Michigan. And sure enough they had converted Burbank
High School into Beal City High School to recreate what
(01:26):
went on in Beal City. And it was a true story,
So it was a documentary kind of film and it's
coming out very soon. Sky Borgman is the director and
she will join us on the program. She's a very
successful director and she directed me that day and it
was a big surprise. She saw me walking in and
she says, you're our principal. When I saw your picture,
(01:48):
I said, I knew I must look like the principal
from Beal City at that time. At what time you're asking, Well,
the project was known as Beal City when we were
shooting it. The actual name of the Netflix movie that's
coming out is called Unknown Number The High School Catfish.
(02:09):
And here is the trailer for this explosive new true
crime documentary. And it happened, and it's going to be
released on August twenty ninth, And it happened in Beal City.
Close up. The people in the high school I've grown
up with since kindergarten. Basically I first met Owen in
(02:32):
seventh grade. They were just like a high school couple
in a movie. We were like best friends. But the
more friends you have, the easier it is. To be
betrayed by them, something dangerous could happen. A high school
girl in Michigan was cyberbully for more than a year,
and who turned out to be the suspect shocked everyone.
(02:56):
It was so bad to the point where I didn't
want even go to Swinmark. It was relent I mean
one in the morning, three in the morning, I would
question how I thought about myself. There's some sick messages.
They were enough to make a fifty three year old
man blush. It's crazy. I'm having a phone can become
the worst thing that happened to me. Things are about
to get so much worse. Sorry, I sorry each and
(03:22):
every day. Yeah. So it was a high school romance
that turned into a social media nightmare. Teen cyber bullying.
The shocking real story, and we're not going to tell
you because I didn't want to give it away and
have a spoiler alert. But this principle that I played
(03:43):
kind of got into an investigation find out who's doing
the bullying. And that's what you'll see. You'll see me
walking around the school. You'll see me typing at my computer.
You'll see me taking meetings in the principal's office. And
it was an intriguing experience for sure, relentless harassment from
(04:07):
an anonymous phone number months long ordeal in Beal City,
Michigan who was doing the cyber bullying. So it's called
Unknown Number. And one of the things I remember this is,
you know, I got there. They said, Okay, we're gonna
have to cut your hair a little bit to look
like the principal. And I'm like, we've got a free haircut. Perfect.
(04:30):
And this was all in the high school at Burbank,
which was a Beal City school with the they put
up signs like it's homecoming, you know, like homemade signs
Beal City. And then they said, all right, are you
going to give you a suit? Try on one of
these three suits? They had brown suits, and so I
tried on the suit and when the shoot was over,
(04:50):
they said, eh, you could just keep the suit. So
I still have. That's my souvenir from being in the
Unknown Number on Netflix and Skybo. Argman was really fun
to work with. A Girl in the Picture is one
of her other projects, and then Abducted in plain Sight
was another one of her projects. And I know when
we were shooting this, she had whatever the number one
(05:13):
project whatever, the number one movie on Netflix was. She
was directing it at the time, because I remember saying
congratulations to her on that. She liked that a lot.
Her movie whatever it was, surpassed Emily in Paris, which
was a big series at the time. So August twenty ninth,
the premiere of a called Unknown Number, The High School Catfish,
(05:38):
delving into the harrowing case of cyber bullying right in
Beal City, Michigan that put a town into chaos. It's
Michael Patrick Shields with you. I'd be curious to see that.
I wonder if I should have a watch party or
something like that. Tim maguire points out that John Engler
is from Beal City. John Engler was not doing the
cyber bullying. We can eliminate him as one of the suspects,
(06:02):
and it wasn't the principle if you were thinking that
watching him find out. Speaking of school, if you want
to ensure your future and you want to land your
first job, that's what Eastern Michigan University is built for.
It's where you'll find in demand programs that have one
hundred percent job placement, where you work with tech evolving
(06:24):
at the pace of change. This is where you shape
tomorrow and get ready to lead, not follow. Eastern Michigan
University grads get more jobs period apply today At emish
dot e DU we do an awful lot alarning on
this program because we do more listening than talking, hopefully,
even though it's a talk show. And I say that's
(06:46):
pennies from Heaven, because there's so much going on in
the world these days that's absolutely astonishing. There's not enough
time to fit it all in for the most part.
Please to be with you and looking forward to that
Netflix's debut, and you believe the coincidence of getting apart
and showing up as Burbank and having it being Beal City, Michigan.
(07:09):
It's Michael Patrick Shield's radio stations all across Michigan, including
I suppose Beal City, very probably through the Big Rapids
WBRN affiliate
