Speaker 1 (00:05):
Live across the Great Lake State. You're connected to Michigan's
most engaging and influential radio and television program, Michigan's Big
Show starring Michael Patrick Shields, presented by Blue Cross, Blue
Shield of Michigan and Blue Care Network.

Speaker 2 (00:20):
I'm producer and creative director Tony Cuthberts.

Speaker 1 (00:23):
Now in the shadow of the Capitol Dome and Lansing.
He's heard from the beaches of Lake Michigan, to the
halls of power and behind closed doors. Here's Michigan's Michael
Patrick Shields.

Speaker 2 (00:36):
Michael Patrick Shields is.

Speaker 3 (00:38):
On the air.

Speaker 4 (00:39):
Good morning world, Good morning Michigan. I'm Kyle Malin, editor
of the Murrs newsletter, filling in for Michael Patrick. Tony
Cuthbert on the other side of the glass. We were
just talking about last night's game with the Detroit Tigers
getting beat by Seattle eight to four decided. Game four
is later today in the make or Break for the Tigers.

(01:01):
Join us now on the program. William Lawrence. He's a
candidate for the seventh Congressional district. Good morning, William. I
hope you were watching the Tigers yesterday, or maybe hopefully
you weren't watching the end of that game.

Speaker 2 (01:13):
Good morning, Cale, I was following. I was out at
an event so I couldn't have the TV on. But
tough one. But I think, don't count these Tigers out.
I think we're going to get one on them today.

Speaker 4 (01:24):
See I think so too. Tony Cuthbert's Debbie Downer over here.
He's watched too much Detroit Tigers baseball today and I
think he's gone through some trauma or something. He just
wants the season to end. Yeah, I do, just because
I don't. I'm not going to go that far to
say I want it to end. But this last month
has been a slog. Kyle, it's a tough watch.

Speaker 2 (01:44):
That's not how this story ends. I think they're going
to take one today and Miz is going to have
a good outing, and we've got Scoop on the mound
coming back to Game five.

Speaker 4 (01:51):
See that's what I'm thinking right there. Yeah, I'm liking
you already, all right. William Lawrence, he's running for Congress
in the seventh congressional district that's basically land seen in
the surrounding area. Tell our listeners a little bit about yourself, William.

Speaker 2 (02:05):
Yeah, well, I was raised in East Lansing, I live
in Lansing. Now, I've been in this area most of
my life. Mid Michigan is my home, and I'm running
out to represent us in Washington, DC. And I'm focused
on good housing for all and good healthcare for everyone
who needs it, which is all of us. That's the
basic stuff we all deserve.

Speaker 4 (02:26):
Now, your background isn't housing, isn't it?

Speaker 2 (02:30):
That's right. For the last four years, I've been a
founder and coordinator of the Lansing Rent is Too Damn
High group, because you know it is. We need to
make it easier to rent or buy a home. If
you're not personally struggling with that issue, then you probably
know somebody who is. Maybe they're living in your home
because they can't afford one of their own. So we've

(02:51):
been able to win protections for a tenant in state law.
We've been able to empower tenants here in the Mid
Michigan area. We need to continue that fight here locally
and all the way to Washington, DC.

Speaker 4 (03:04):
How did you get into that particular issue on the
high cost of rent and the kind of the housing
shortage that we're seeing.

Speaker 2 (03:14):
I'm a millennial, Kyle, and especially after the pandemic set end.
I started looking around and said, man, my friends are
not able to buy home, and you know, we're not
able to invest in a community because when you're a
renter and you don't have housing security, you end up

(03:34):
moving around so much. You're here there, then you're across
town the next day, then you're back with your parents,
then who knows, and it really makes it difficult to
just to put down roots and make a house into
a home. So we believe that, you know, whether you're
a homeowner or a renter, we all deserve housing security,
which is not just some place you can afford this year,

(03:55):
but it's the confidence and knowing you're going to get
to stay there and be able to afford it next year.

Speaker 4 (04:00):
If you were elected to Congress, what would you hope
to do on that front.

Speaker 2 (04:04):
I want to see a federal tenants Bill of rights,
a federal version of what we've been fighting for here
in Lansing, which includes the right to renew your lease
so you're not at the whim of a property manager
to be able to re sign if you've been a
good tenant. It includes the right to counsel in the
viction court. Right now, we got people on the worst

(04:26):
days of their lives who have no representation and they're
going up against very expensive lawyers on the other side
from the property manager companies. And it includes the ideally
rent control, which is saying you know that your rent
next year is not going to go up by more
than a certain percentage, so that you can actually make

(04:48):
a plan around your budget and your income, like we
all need to be able to do.

Speaker 4 (04:52):
We're speaking with William Lawrence. He is running for congress
excuse me, in the seventh congressional district. William, what else
are the the issues that you're focusing on.

Speaker 2 (05:03):
Well, I'm focused on healthcare, and right now we have
these incredible cost cliff coming up with the Affordable Care Act,
and people here in the area are going to see
their premiums increase two to three or sometimes even four
times monthly, which is just insane, and so we need

(05:23):
to fix our healthcare system. I absolutely support the effort
to stop these cost cliffs that are coming up soon.
But moving forward, I support a Medicare for all system
because you know that may have worked the healthcare system
we have back when we had a lot of career
track jobs, and you hitch the healthcare to that and

(05:45):
it makes sense for a lifelong healthcare solution. But right
now you've got people working gig jobs two three, four jobs,
moving around a lot because there just isn't that job security.
And so we need to be able to assure that
people will have their health care that isn't attached to
their help to their employment. And the big theme in

(06:05):
the campaign is security. What is it that actually keeps
us safe? What is it that actually allows us to
look forward to the future, because right now, you know
too many of us don't have a future to look
forward to.

Speaker 4 (06:17):
William Lawrence, candidate for the seventh Congressional district getting back
to medicare or medicaid for Medicare for all were it
seems like we're slowly moving in that direction. But what's
the biggest turtle you think to getting to Medicare for all?

Speaker 1 (06:33):
Is that?

Speaker 4 (06:34):
Is that the insurance companies? Why why the resistance you think?

Speaker 2 (06:39):
I think you said it, Kyle. I think the insurance
companies are making way too much money, tens of billions
of dollars, and their business model is to deny us care.
I mean everyone has dealt with it, spending hours on
the phone trying to get some kind of basic treatment covered.
And that's because they've got whole staff of people whose

(07:01):
job is to find reasons to deny you care. Make sense,
because if they don't pay for it, then they get
to deliver that profit to their investors. You know, it's
not right. I've spoken to people who work in insurance
who have held some of those jobs, and they'll tell you,
you know, that's not a good job, and it does

(07:22):
some damage and it's not right. They'll tell you that's
exactly how the system works. So we got to take
this profit ince and out of the provision of insurance.

Speaker 4 (07:31):
We're talking with William Lawrence. He's running for Congress in
the seventh Congressional district as a Democrat, seat currently held
by Tom Barrett, a Republican wet. We only got about
a minute left here, but I did want to get
your take on the fact that you are running in
a very competitive primary against the former US Ambassador to
the Ukraine, Bridget Brink, former Navy Seal Matt Masdam. They

(07:53):
both have some pretty high profile and you know, well
healed political consultants on the national stage helping them out
in a very competitive district and one that the nation's watching.
What kind of attitude are you taking approaching this is
just kind of a lancing guy running against two real,

(08:14):
well funded political candidates.

Speaker 2 (08:18):
Well, I'm proud to say that I've got the most
endorsements from local elected officials here in the Mid Michigan
reason because people trust me, they know my work, and
they know that I'm somebody who builds bridges from the
streets of protests into the halls of government. So I'm
going to go in ready to represent our community at
every level and ultimately get things done, deliver the goods

(08:40):
here in mid Michigan. And of course we all are
sick and tired of the money in politics, and I'm
raising put off too to be able to compete in
this race.

Speaker 4 (08:51):
All right, well, thank you for the time today. William Lawrence.
He is running for the seventh Congressional District nomination as
a Democrat. You're listening to Michigan's big show.

medications that seldom resulted in a good outcome. The adage
