Speaker 1 (00:12):
Welcome to micro Terrors, scary stories for kids where it's
always the spooky season, full of chills, thrills, and spine
tingling spooks. Micro Terrors are family friendly frights for those
(00:37):
ages eight and up, and while our stories are for
younger years, we are still talking about things that go
bump in the night, and some children may not be
able to handle what others can. Parental consent is recommended
now for tonights micro Terror Outside the Window by Scott Donnelly,
(01:07):
narrated by Darren Marler. I woke up with a start.
Even in my dream state, I knew there was a
flash of light that came from somewhere, lightning perhaps. I
sat up in bed, waiting to hear the thunder that
would inevitably follow, waiting to hear the rain start pounding outside.
(01:30):
But it never did. There was no storm on this night.
I waited another minute or two and decided that I
must have dreamed the flash of light. It didn't happen again,
so I lay back down in bed and pulled the
blankets back over me. Before I shut my eyes, I
focused on my night light in the corner of the room.
(01:53):
It started to flicker. I waited to see if it
would stop, but it just kept flickering. I tossed the
blankets off again and climbed out of bed, my bare
feet touching the cold surface of my wooden floor. The
floorboards creaked beneath my way as I crept across my
room and pushed the night light into the outlet the
rest of the way. The flickering stopped, and I returned
(02:15):
to my bed, But before I could lay back down,
the flash happened again. It came from outside my bedroom window.
It was quick, blue or purple in color, and was
accompanied by some sort of sharp sound that I couldn't
quite decipher. I hurried to my window and pulled the
curtains back. Outside, I couldn't see much. It was dark,
(02:40):
and whatever had caused the purple or blue flash had
subsided again. Under the moonlight, however, I could see the
dark outline of our swing set in the backyard, and
there was movement underneath it. I squinted, trying to see
exactly what was moving, but it was too difficult. It
(03:01):
was a swaying motion, like something was moving back and forth,
an animal. Perhaps we had been getting deer in the
yard lately.
Speaker 2 (03:12):
Or my heart dropped at this thought a prowler, some
creep wandering around and our fenced in backyard during the
midnight hours. I thought about waking up Mom and Dad,
but didn't want to sound the alarm just yet. For
all I knew, it could have been just one of
the two swings, swaying back and forth in the wind.
(03:36):
Then I heard a repetitive, rusty creaking sound, like metal
scraping against metal, and I was convinced it was just
the old swing moving back and forth. But the more
my eyes focused and adjusted to the darkness outside my window,
I couldn't help but notice that if it was the swing,
(03:57):
the other one had remained still, somehow beating the wind
at its own game. I leaned forward, pressing my face
as close to the glass as possible, trying desperately to
see what was moving out in the yard, and then
sending a shock through my system, the purple flash exploded again,
blinding me into taking a step back and rapidly blinking
(04:19):
it away. When I tried to look again, Even though
my vision was slightly twisted, there was no doubt in
my mind that I saw something dash around the backyard
and around the side of the house. It was tall
like a full grown man, and moved with incredible speed.
I backed away from the window, certain now that there
(04:41):
was something ominous and corrupt happening outside. I ran out
of my room as fast as I could and down
the hall to where Mom and Dad slept. I grabbed
the doorknob and tried to turn it, but it was stuck.
I tried yanking and pulling, but the door wouldn't budge. Mom. Dad,
I cried out, it's just as the words escaped my mouth,
(05:01):
a blinding purple light exploded within their room, spilling out
into the hallway from underneath the gap at the bottom
of the bedroom door. I screamed for them again. Then
there was a loud, thunderous boom that shook their room,
followed by the crashing of glass. I tried even harder
to push and pull the door, and finally they gave in.
(05:23):
The door flung into the room, and I stumbled in
along with it. When I gained my balance, I saw
one of the walls of their bedroom was completely gone,
ripped through or broken into. The window had been shattered.
The dry wall lay in chunks and splintered. Pieces of
shelving and picture frames were scattered everywhere I looked at
(05:43):
the bed, Mom and Dad were gone. All that was
left was the disheveled bed in which they'd been sleeping
in moments earlier. There was a horrible sound coming from outside,
like the muffled roar of an engine that kept emitting
strange tones and droning hum. There was a series of
rapidly flashing purple lights and jarring squeals. I was afraid
(06:06):
from Mom and Dad's life. I ran through the room
into the gaping hole in the wall. Outside. The wind
was furious, blowing the grass and clanging the wind chimes
around the other side of the house. Mom, Dad, I
called out again, but this time I was met with
something that made my entire body freeze up in fear.
Stepping into my view only a few feet away was
(06:29):
the tall, spindly, shadowy prowler from the backyard. Its body
was gaunt gray in color, and I could see its
bones just beneath its paper thin skin. It had a long,
narrow neck in which a large egg shaped head sat
atop its Two pure black, bulbous eyes glared at me,
and I could see my horrified reflection in them. Then
(06:53):
the other worldly creature reached out with its gangly fingers
and grabbed me. When I awoke, everything was silent. I
was laying on a cold steel floor. I opened my
eyes and rubbed away a smelly, goopy substance that had
been smeared over them. When I was able to see
a little, I couldn't tell exactly where I was. There
(07:17):
was no sound, like it had all been vacuumed out
of the space I was in. I didn't know where
my parents were, although I could feel and sense the
presence of other people around somewhere. I stood to my
feet and felt wobbly, like I'd forgotten how to walk.
I stumbled across the cold steel floor and put my
(07:39):
arms against what I thought was a black wall at first,
But the more goop that I removed from my eyes,
I realized that it wasn't a wall at all. It
was a window, and outside the window was the infinite
blackness of outer space. Thank you for listening to micro Terrors.
