Thao è nata negli Anni 70 in Vietnam, sul delta del Mekong. La guerra sanguinosa con gli Stati Uniti era finita da poco, il Paese era poverissimo, ma i suoi ricordi d'infanzia sono felici. E andare a vivere all'estero non rientrava nei suoi piani per il futuro. Ma dopo aver studiato inglese, Thao trova lavoro in un hotel di Ho Chi Minh City, e qui conosce Pasquale, un italiano in viaggio che comincia a corteggiarla. È per amor suo che Thao arriva a Milano, una città di cui non sa niente, ma che finirà per diventare casa...
Oggi Thao è una delle cuoche del Lac, il Laboratorio di Antropologia del Cibo del quartiere Giambellino, dove tiene periodicamente corsi di cucina vietnamita.
