Moonstar a Sailor moon podcast is presentedby the Vintage Anime Video Network. Visit
us at www dot Vintage Anime Videodot com. A recommendation from a cat
is oh, what an amusing younglady, Charles. In this instance,
(00:24):
I think we can make an exception. But oh, thank you. It'll
be nice to have such a vivaciousyoung lady in my seminar. But there
is one condition. A condition youmean, I'm clumsy and not too good
at table manners or any manners actually, but hey, outdoor sports. Hey,
I'm an au, so if Idon't have to run, well,
(00:49):
no real lady likes to run.Charles, get the discus. Yes,
here you are what the Count's greatlyenjoys the discus throw. So if you
want to in the seminar, youmust demonstrate your skill level for her.
Hey, no problem this, Iam good at ye. Bravo excellent.
(01:21):
You've just been accepted into the PrincessSeminar. Good morning, girls, I'm
going to talk to you this morningabout the way you look. Now.
I've heard it said that we womenattach too much importance to our appearance,
but that isn't true. After all, the way we look exerts so much
(01:42):
influence on the way we feel andon the way other people feel about us,
that it really is very important. When I talk about good appearance or
good grooming or looking your best, you probably think immediately of clothes or hairstyle,
make up. Well, I realizethat those things are especially interesting to
(02:04):
you, and they are important, and I am going to talk about them,
but please remember that they are justreally the trimmings, just like the
icing on the cake. If theicing is very good, but that's fine.
But if the cake itself isn't good, you'd soon lose interest in the
icing. So let's start with thecake and come back to the kimmings later.
(02:53):
Welcome back to Moonstar, a SailorMoon podcast. I'm one of your
hosts Alex, and today Chris andI will be discussing the third third episode
of the nineties English dub of SailorMoon aka the Deep dub title Little Mismanners.
The clip you heard at the beginningof today's episode features Mary Stu Vessant,
I hope Steve Vessant, I hopeI'm saying that right, giving some
(03:16):
homespun advice to a group of highschool girls on how to look prettier following
some basic rules. You give youthe whole video on YouTube link in today's
episode description. I just thought thatwas a great way to show how things
like this sort of both changed andstayed the same in different ways over time,
(03:38):
and it was to me I lovedI've always been fascinated by this world,
as you'll hear later, so Ithought some you guys enjoyed that share
with us. Are you fascinated bythe world of Good Manners or is it
sort of annoying or frustrating for you? I kind of somehow managed to fall
on both sides. You'll see bythe end of the episode what I mean.
But I did want to take abrief moment at the beginning to remind
(04:01):
everybody about the clips at the veryend of the show that feature the battle
scenes. I think I've said thisbefore in the intros, but they are
there to serve a purpose for thoseof us who love sailor Moon the way
that I know all of you dowho are listening. We sometimes draw strength
from the show in one way oranother, whether you're connecting to a specific
(04:26):
character who makes you feel more seenin your life, or maybe several characters
in different ways. Maybe it's themusic that keeps you coming back and makes
you feel, you know, likeyou can handle anything. The colors,
the animation, the story, whateverit is. We're all here for a
big enough reason, right for megetting to see our heroes every week channel
(04:51):
their higher selves, which is howTerry Hawks describe transforming in an interview before
each episode. That's what's kind ofa has been my favorite aspect of it,
and I just feel that there that'ssort of that's what it's meant to
teach us, is that like anyonecan channel their higher self, anyone can
(05:13):
kind of draw power from somewhere evenwhen you don't think you can. And
sometimes it just takes putting on likethe right song even you know what I
mean, to get those get thatfeeling back, to start that fire again
inside, you know. So that'swhy I put those clips at the end
of the show, and I justwanted to encourage you guys who maybe don't
(05:36):
listen all the way to the end, to remember that they're there and give
those give those a go for somefun that happens after the disclaimer at the
end if you don't know, andfor anybody who might want or need it
right now. Here is an extramoon healing activation, and the way it
works is you just join in withwhatever you feel needs healing in your heart
(06:00):
right now, whatever that is,and remember to shout it like you mean
it, because that is it's away of release. It's we're taking a
lot of this is taking a lotof actual things that are sort of like
scientifically good for your mental health andjust putting it through the medium of sailor
Moon. And I think those ofus here would appreciate that. So here
(06:21):
we go. You know what todo. I'll see you in the episode
and do a little i don't know, like a little chat together healing activation.
All right, the universe and ourlisteners at home have to scream along
if they're on the bus or whatever. They just got to do it.
(06:43):
Okay. So before we get intothe episode, though we haven't recorded in
(07:28):
a couple of weeks, why don'tyou catch everybody up on what's been going
on with you? Uh, nothingtoo much different, just more drag shows
that I've been going to. Whatusual next tattoo is in two weeks or
yeah, thirteen days? Okay, but what are you getting this time?
(07:50):
It's the neck up, so prettymuch just the face of a Leir who
is the protagonist of the most recentcom Soul Fire Emblem game. Oh cool,
where are you getting that? Onthe opposite side of my left arm,
so like the flip side of wherethe Huka tattoo is. I'm assuming
(08:11):
you're building like an anime or awell, just a sleeve in general.
Oh right, No, man,it's not. That's not the plan.
But I mean maybe that'll end uphappening. I don't know. I just
it just seems like the natural trajectoryor however you say that word from where
you're going. That's cool, thoughpeople can see you have another one.
(08:31):
You were just talking about. What'sthe other tattoo? The two other ones
I have are the yeah, theicon of Hwuka from episode one sixteen when
the frame is a it's a it'sa still frame of when her and Setsuna
and Mietcha do are standing in theflower garden watching the picnic that Usagi,
(08:54):
Mamaru, Chibusa and Hotaru are having. And then my other my right arm
is Sella from Firearmblem like most ofmy lower right arm, and these are
on your Instagram too, both ofthem. If anyone's interested in looking.
I love anime tattoos. I've seenall kinds, the ones that I mean,
(09:18):
listen, put whatever you want onyour body. But have you ever
seen the people who get like sailormoon as King of the Hill. But
it's like and stuff. I don'tquite I don't get it like I would
not. But if that brings themjoy, by all means do it.
But yeah, I just I'm stillblank. Although I do have a scar
in the shape of Florida from whenI fell down and like I was,
(09:43):
my parents put me in sports whenI was a kid. I think is
like a way to try to butchme up a little bit. And I
was in basketball and I fell whenwe were practicing outside on like this cement
gravel, and I remember I sawthe bone through my knee and I just
was thinking, I think this shouldhurt more. And then they put stuff
(10:05):
on it and then it like kindof healed. I still have a scar.
It's never gone away, but itis in the shape of Florida.
And I always thought that was funny. And you had a birthday since we
talked, Happy belated birthday on theshow. Oh thanks, Yeah, that
was just this past weekend. Itwas the fifth. So this past Saturday,
What did you do this weekend?I just went. I just spent
(10:28):
the weekend and or Friday night throughSunday morning and just in Minneapolis doing stuff
that I normally do. I justsaw hung out with like two or three
people that I'm friends with, andyeah, it was it was fine.
It was good, low key birthday. I kind of love that, though.
(10:54):
Did you at least have a greattime? I wouldn't say. I
mean it was it was good.Yeah, it wasn't like amazing or anything,
but I didn't really think it itwould be. I was as glad
that I got to be in thecity and hang out with stay with somebody.
Yeah, that's always nice. Didyou get anything for yourself? Do
you do that? Uh? Wellno, I didn't really do that this
(11:18):
time, because I mean for along time now, I just get like
money for my birthday from like familyand like anybody like my Yeah, so
nothing specific. I think in mytwenties that was probably the case too for
me, And then in my thirties, at some point I realized the importance
of like the ceremony of gifting myselfan item on my birthday, So I
(11:43):
always get myself something, and it'susually something really dumb, like this last
year. Do you know what theCracker Barrel is? Yeah, it's for
those who don't. It's a southernrestaurant. It's on most interstates, I
think throughout the country. Actually,I think that is it in Minnesota.
Two Yeah, then there's like ahour that there's at least one, like
in the montro area. I've neverbeen to one, though, Yeah,
(12:07):
and I absolutely love it for alot of reasons. There's a store built
into it, a that sells likeliterally sort of everything except groceries, but
they do have food. It's weird, but you can buy like if you
want to get some candles or somecandy that looks like it was made in
like nineteen twenty, you know. But I go there for my birthday and
(12:28):
necessarily just got myself like a bottleof their special syrup. Like it's nothing
crazy, you know, But it'slike, I don't know, it's worth
it to celebrate yourself a little bit. I think, yeah, for sure,
because think about it, like you'restill here and it's largely because of
you, Right, you should celebratethat. Right. Well, I hope
(12:48):
you had a good birthday. Nonetheless, do we have any birthday episodes in
Sailor Moon? We do? Really, I don't even know one or is
it two the top of my head. Sailor Moon, remember her episode is
technically her birthday. I think that'sthe only one though, unless I'm missing
(13:09):
one. Well that's a fun that'sa fun little detail. What about your
interview is what's going on with those? I still haven't had anything planned,
but I think the well, Imean, I've already talked to people because
the next Genchin Impact update is nextFriday, and I've already talked to one
(13:30):
person that plays a new character that'scoming out that I haven't interviewed yet,
so I know that I'll be doinghim probably, like like I don't.
I don't think it'll be on thatweekend, but probably the week after so,
and then I'll probably do another sequelwith because there's three new characters coming
out of this update, and I'vealready interviewed one of them, and I'll
(13:52):
probably do a sequel with him ifI can. So which one is he?
So if anyone wants to hear thefirst one, so they're ready,
So the one that I've already interviewedout of the three new characters is on
Damon Mills, who plays Lenny inDenschen Impact. Now. I interviewed him
back in like late spring. Yeah, it's a it's a whole new region
of Denshian Impact. So anytime thatthat happens, there's a ton of characters
(14:16):
that are introduced that once and likewith each update two that comes out every
month or every other month. Nice. So if anyone wants to check out
him, say his name once more, Damon Mills, Damon Mills on Chris's
YouTube channel. To go and watchthat old or the old but the first
interview and then when he does thefollow up, you'll kind of just get
(14:39):
to pick up, you know, from where you left off. I think
that would be a great idea. All right, Well, good luck on
those I don't know if there's muchto update over here. I've just kind
of been not feeling good. Iguess the people want it. By the
time this comes out, this willbe old news. But we will have
taken a break because I got sickin the beginning of August and this time
(15:00):
of year is kind of tough forme in general for just several reasons.
So I just thinking about it,and I'm gonna look at my schedule and
block out some breaks for us thatwe're gonna follow, kind of like a
school schedule, you know what Imean. And I'm gonna give us like
a winter break, a spring break, and a summer break. They're not
gonna be massive, but it's thatway I will have time to kind of
(15:24):
recalibrate, because, yeah, thispulls creative energy from me, and anyone
who's creative knows that sometimes you haveto like recharge this. I'm sure yours
do too, But you kind ofcan't tell the person like, hey,
I'm gonna not interview you because mycreative energy is low today, you know.
But we can sort of pause theshow so that the episode quality doesn't
(15:46):
dip, you know, just becausewe're trying to I don't know what meet
an imaginary deadline that doesn't exist,So I'll work that out and let you
know what that is. All right, Are you ready to get into the
episode? Yeah? Today, onSailor Moon, I decide it's time to
(16:06):
acquire the manners of a princess andbecome the star pupil at a finishing school.
Well not quite, but I soondiscover the matron of this finishing school
is more interested in finishing off herstudents, and we Sailor Scouts have got
to stop her. We'll be rightback, Okay. This week's deep title
(16:27):
is little Miss Manners, which Ithink is a cute title for the actual
content of the episode. What isit called in Japanese? Let's become a
Princess? Usagi's bizarre training. That'spretty cute too, Actually, I like
both of them this week. Andhow do we open our episode? It's
(16:51):
a typical scenario for the show ofUsagi being late to school and then she
runs into Nauru, and then asthey're standing outside of the school gate,
there's a limousine that drives up andthen three very pretty more classy visibly not
(17:14):
like not from here foreigner girls comeout and then enter the school past them,
and then Nauru is saying to Usagithat they're from this royal academy or
something in England and they're just beingsent over here like that as an exchange
program kind of thing. Wait, they're from England, I think so in
(17:37):
the Japanese, because in the Englishthey're just a couple of their classmates who
are attending The quote Princess Seminar atthe Rose Finishing School. Oh don't you
know? No, it's the RoseFinishing School and those girls are taking the
Princess Seminar. Oh yeah, CountessRose, right, that elegant woman.
(18:00):
Oh she's open a finishing school.Yeah, she's related to royalty, I
hear. And she's gonna make overthose girls so that they'll act just like
princesses. Isn't that cool? Okay? Yeah, I think it's just the
Samon, but they don't they don'tmention anything about foreigners though at all.
I think it's the Salamon Japanese. Then actually, oh really, yeah,
(18:23):
okay, where do you think youthought the England thing came from? I
don't know. I think I wasmaybe thinking of one of the episodes that's
in like the next season or thethird season. I think it's I think
it's season two maybe, or maybeit's season three where maybe I was just
like, wait a second, doesthat mean technically they went to England in
(18:45):
the spisode, because that's where theywould have to have been. Yeah,
uh yeah, but it's that Ithink the deep version is probably accurate.
It's this finishing school run by Countessfor those who don't know what a finishing
school is. How would you describethat? They don't exist anymore, I
(19:06):
don't think really. But it's basicallyjust girls being taught how to serve teat
where forks go, and how toget like a wealthy or not like not
like a wealthy man to marry, but like a quote unquote proper man's things
like that. Yeah, it's veryold school etiquette, specifically for women or
(19:30):
young women, and it's all abouthow to be proper. There's also,
though, and I think this isstill sort of a culture in the South
when it comes to things like beautypageants and stuff. But there's like debutants
that's a very Southern thing. Idon't know if you've ever heard of that,
and like a debutant ball. Andpart of that is going to finishing
(19:51):
school too, where they learn allof these things. And the whole reason
I even know about that is FortuneFemster is a comedian and she talks about
how Yeah she talks about how shegrew up where like her mom was rich,
but then they lost all their money, but her mom still tried to
make her do rich people things. So she was like the only poor kid
at the finishing school and like allthat kind of stuff. But yeah,
(20:15):
that's what that is. And it'sfunny because I know it's like outdated today,
but like this doesn't really make sense, you know what I mean?
Yeah, but the idea of onehas always sort of been charming to me
in the in the terms of likewhat an interesting thought that is, Like
(20:37):
what that must be like it kindof seems like fun. I don't know,
what do you think. I don'treally I don't think it probably is
an actuality. I think it's justmaybe what the media and fictional properties have
made it out to seem like. Not only that, but I am just
coming off of watching this episode, which really does make it seem fun.
(21:00):
And this is like a child's show, you know what I mean, Like
it's not not as realistic, soyou're probably right. In reality, it's
probably not that great. If anyonelistening has ever really been to one and
has a real experience, please shareit though. And I don't care how
far in the future you're listening tothis comment wherever. I want to know
what it's really like. But themusic they use in the dream sequence here,
(21:26):
because she after this whole thing, she falls asleep and we see her
in tuxedo mask dancing in all ofthat stuff. I just really loved the
music they chose for this moment, and I thought the way Miss h bursts
into her dream to wake her upwas really cute. Moonstar a Seila Moon
(21:47):
podcast will return after these messages andnow more moonster a sail the Moon put
cost all the Grimala wish I couldbe a real princess resenting Princess Serena.
(22:18):
Ah, she's lovely, so elegant, to refined, exactly what you imagine
a princess should be. May Ihave the pleasure of having this dance?
Selena? Did you do your homework? Silence? How dare you speak to
(22:41):
a princess like that? Oh?Pardon me, your Highness, forgive me?
Please not wake up? PLEASEA.I just really loved the music they
chose for this moment, and it'sjust little details like that that make this
one of my favorite episodes in seasonone. I know there were some cuts
(23:02):
here, though. What is thescene like at school in the Japanese because
it's cut up in deep a little? You mean during that same scene?
M m oh, yeah so sheyeah, so when when her teacher comes
into her dream, she says, you know, you can't basically says that
you can't tell princess what to do, and then she ends up saying that
(23:22):
in real life too without realizing it. And then she gets scolded for that
and for not doing her homework, and then Haruna sends her out to stand
in the hallway as a punishment, which in the English version they cut out
that detail of why she's in thehallway, like you can still put it
(23:45):
together, but they make a pointof never saying that that's what that is,
like that that's a punishment of herstanding in the hallway, and that's
a through line in the first twoseasons. For some reason, I think
it was like, it's because wedon't do that here, yeah, probably,
yeah, And and I guess theywere just like, we don't want
(24:07):
kids being confused, or maybe theythink it's too harsh or whatever. But
I always thought that was kind ofodd that they chose to cut that out.
I don't know after that part, but what do her and the Luna
talk about in the hallway? Oh, which is a brief little thing of
Then it pops up and Usagi saysthat she decided that she wants to act
(24:30):
more like a princess, and Lunathinks that it's for a different reason,
but then Nusagi says that it's justbecause she wants to she wants to be
able to dance formally with a tuxedomask. I think it's even more cut
down in the dec and it's alot of kind of like giggly bouncy deliveries
(24:52):
like so you can barely catch whatshe's saying. It's but it's essentially the
same idea. And then after thatwe cut to the Negaverse for the first
time in the episode. And thisis where I need to ask you who
animated this? That's a eto really, because there were some really unfortunate frames
in this episode. I'm shocked thatI'm I'm floored that it's her. Actually,
(25:15):
I was expecting it to be theworst animator. I'm not even joking,
that's funny, that's insane. Isent you one of the frames.
I think that's the ugliest frame I'veever seen of tuxedo matter. Yeah,
it's weird. We'll get there later. But I noticed it first here during
the Negaverse scene, and I thinkwhat it is is that her style is
(25:40):
so much more detailed than what we'reused to, and she hasn't quite landed
her sweet spot yet at this point, because this is early on in her
animating the show for sure. Yeah, so we're kind of getting some symptoms
of that of like an early artistdeveloping, which I I'm not mad at
it, you know what I meanWhen I say it's like an ugly frame,
(26:03):
I think it's funny and I likeand it's like we also that allows
us to see her growth as anartist, you know, Yeah, but
I am really shocked that is her, Like, Wow, what did you
notice it at all? I meanI did, I did. I did
remember this episode. But I doknow, I do know what you mean
(26:26):
because the episodes that she did inseasons one and two weren't, uh you
know, weren't or weren't remotely closeto what she's recognized for now. I
don't think that. It wasn't untilI would say this, the scene that
(26:48):
she that she animated in the firstmovie, when I am seeing the memory
of her past, I wouldn't sayit was probably It wasn't until then that
her style became like inmately recognizable aswho she was. I get what you're
saying. Yeah, she's still finddefinitely finding herself in season one. And
it's funny because didn't she do therat episode with the with zoyside and the
(27:11):
cats. Yeah, and that one, animation wise, I think is spectacular.
So it's it's odd, like butyou know what, like we we've
said this many times, progress isn'tlinear, so peaks and valleys it makes
sense. Mm hmm Okay. That'sthat actually has a way more interesting answer
than it could have been, sothat's good for the show. I guess
(27:33):
what actually happens during this scene thoughwith the negaverse, since we haven't talked
about that. Queen Beryl asks Mamruor well ending me on to team up
with Kunzaid and then he just likeflat out refuses, and then they just
say that they'll do their own They'llboth do their own thing. Yeah,
It's it's pretty short, and thebasic idea we're supposed to get is that
(27:56):
Darien or Tuxedo doesn't want any helpor doesn't want to work with anybody else.
He's solo character, I think. And after that, we see Luna
talking to Quote Headquarters and is thisthe first time we've seen her contact headquarters
since Venus arrived, I think,so, yeah, because of that being
(28:19):
known now, then it ends upbeing revealed that she's been talking to Artemis
the whole time. Yeah, andLuna is not pleased, which I thought
was such a cute and funny wayof them dropping, like because story wise
they had to drop that, youknow, yeah, and this was a
(28:40):
way of explaining it really well ofwhy it was stopping. It kind of
like explains what it was the wholetime all at once, and it gives
you some comedy. So I thoughtit was a really smart way of doing
that for sure. What's the nextthing we see with Sagi and Luna.
It cuts to Usagi Luna is stickingaround the Rose mansion and they're up in
(29:04):
a tree and then yeah, they'reseeing a lot of girls sitting around with
the head countess reading poetry. Andthen Usagi gets excited from seeing dessert inside,
and then one of the butlers seesthem. They followed the tree and
(29:25):
then when one question, Nusagi justsays that she wants to join she wants
to join the seminar, and thenUsagi says that or he says that they
need one of the members. That'sa part of it. To introduce her,
and then Usagi says that like aLuna, Luna is her introductee.
(29:48):
It's sort of similar. The introductionthing was actually like a recommendation, and
she's like, oh, let mehave my cat recommend me. Even funnier
to me than an introduction. Butyeah, and I love the moment of
her being in the tree. Thiswas where I was getting confused with the
(30:10):
animation though, because these moments outsideof the Nega verse, and then that
weird moment later later with the battle, and then there's like one or two
other things I noticed there were somereally great animation moments like here, like
with the and I think the detailsthat were put into like the spread on
the table with you know, withall the girls sitting around it and everything
(30:33):
that took some time and effort. So I can definitely see her touches in
there now that I know it's her, and it explains why it sort of
peeked and then hit. And Iguess those bad ones were just some like
clunky moments. I guess I don'tknow, But how does she have essentially
have to prove that she is becausethe Countess approaches her right and is like,
(30:59):
I'll let I'll make an exception, but on one condition. What's the
condition Edward brings out or the butler, that's what he's called in Japanese.
He brings out a frisbee. Andthen the Countess tells Usagi that some that
the women have to be the girlshave the begind of throwing a frisbee to
(31:22):
join the seminar. And then shewas able to pass that because Usagi said
that everything that the girls are learningin there, besides that she's bad at
all of them. Right, Andit's funny because they changed it to a
discuss even though it is clearly afrisbee. I think they made that choice
because they wanted to heighten the likefanciness in all aspects, and I thought
(31:48):
that was a good choice. Andalso the episode is sort of silly enough
without having to hear them say theword frisbee, which is like a silly
word, right, Yeah, Idon't know. I actually like that change
for some reason. And also I'vealways loved like the animation of her throwing
(32:08):
it and going into and cutting allthe girl's bows off and stuff. I
thought that was a great touch. This was like an interesting detail where we
get to see her power as asailor Moon having an effect on her human
life in a way. Right, can you think of any other examples of
(32:29):
that. I don't think it happensin season three, and I don't think
it happens in season four. I'mtrying to think of if there's anything else
we really see like that, becauseI'm making a parallel right now, because
you know, we started recording theCar Captors show. Yeah, and in
(32:50):
Car Captors Sokara the protagonist, right, that's main character. She has this
staff that she kind of twirls likea baton, and at school she is
a like an athletic baton twirling likethat's part of her ability. And I
kind of thought that was interesting howthey tied those two things together. So
I was curious if there was anymore of that in Sailor Moon, but
(33:15):
I guess not. So this isthis is sort of a unique moment for
that. After this cool thing withthe frisbee or the discus, we cut
to another scout meeting or a sailorsoldier meeting or guardian whatever you prefer.
And this one is minus Serena again, which has happened more than once.
(33:35):
Now, what are they discussing herewhat Usagi is doing, and Artemis says
that that Usagi is doing it totrain to become a princess, like for
the for to be able to notuse the silver crystal, and then all
the other girls just agree that theyshould go join her, and then that's
(33:57):
what happens. It's the basically thesame, but it's a little more nineties
flare because they're getting all jazzed aboutit, and they end it with like,
we're going to crash the seminar.I think they might even said totally
crash the seminar, which is likecrash a party kind of lingo thing,
and I appreciate that aspect of it. It was a pretty lighthearted meeting,
was there. Did Ray kind ofacts a little frustrated with her for a
(34:22):
second, but that's about it.Was there anything more to it? And
the other one no, not really. Yeah, it was pretty non eventful.
We get to see Kunzite and theCountess talking and they're discussing something.
What are they talking? They're likethe requirement of the discus? Why did
they choose that? Because he knowsthat one of Sailor Moon's attacks is moon
(34:45):
Tiara action and that whoever uses thatwould be have to be really good at
throwing her frisbee. So that's howhe knows. Yeah, And I actually
thought that was fairly sound logic, and as a kid, I was very
pressed by it. As an adult, I'm mildly pressed by it still.
I think there there are easier waysthey could have done this by now,
(35:07):
but for the show, like thesake of the show, I think this
is a really clever way. Ithink it's a lot smarter than the hair
thing, right, and like scanningand anyway, I'm still like stuck on
how they scan one piece of hairwrong anyway, but it's a little smarter.
(35:28):
So they're leveling up. And wecut to a dinner scene which it's
like the first of several tests thatshe fails, right, is she like
slurping the soup and making like whathow does she fail the dinner? Okay,
so it's the same in that sense. They did for some reason,
they freeze on this one frame andkind of wiggle it around in the deep
(35:50):
one and they extend like the slurpingsounds even longer, and it kind of
was uncomfortable to the point where Iwas like, I don't need all that.
I don't know why they did that. I'm assuming they cut something and
they were like filling time with it, or they just thought it was funny.
I don't know, but I waslike, that was a little much.
(36:12):
But then they all end up inthese pink dresses, which I kind
of thought were horribly ugly. Whatdid you think of them? I didn't
think they were. I didn't reallyhave a thought about them specifically. I
guess they just I think it's becausethey for some reason felt maybe it's the
color, which is very peptobysmal, combined with the fact that there wasn't a
(36:35):
whole lot of detail. It justfelt like pink slapped on them and they
it was like they were all big. I don't know. There was just
like something about the design of thedresses that was not working for me.
And I made another note about theanimation, because that's that's one of the
things. I was like, Idon't know who animated this, because it's
like good and then that happens,But anyway, now I know, so
(36:57):
it's another eto blip for me.I'm sure other people might like them.
But and then we go to thedance class. Moon Star, a sailor
Moon Podcast will return after these messagesand now more Moon Stars the Moon Podcast.
(37:29):
Stand up straight, young ladies, gracefully now one two three, one
two three with the music. Thisis our last class and the Princess seminar.
Those whose shoulders I touch shall graduate? Is terrible. I'll never how's
(37:58):
a consery? Now? Ray,you guys are all here. We had
to see what this was all about? Yeaes serena. What is the way?
This is like the final test? And some of them are going to
graduate and some do not. Howdo we know who graduates? It's basically
just who can dance properly or formally, I guess. And then Amy and
(38:24):
Makoto are doing it right, andthen Musagi Mi Naco and Ray or m
m And the way that they findout they graduate is if she walks over
and touches their shoulder, which thatdetail always stuck out to me. Did
that ever? Did you ever noticethat? I didn't really notice it,
(38:45):
I guess until this time. Idon't know why that always stuck out to
me, But right now thinking aboutit, it's kind of I think that's
like another etiquette thing, because ifyou're trying to get someone's attention, without
drawing attention. Lightly tapping someone onthe shoulder like is like a lot less
(39:06):
than like being like hey, whatwhen you're like in mixed company, or
I think it's something to do withetiquette, because they made a big deal
about it. I felt like thatbeing the gesture she used. I don't
know, but what is graduation here? Technically? Well, the girls that
are past they get escorted to anotherroom. Amy and Makoto noticed that all
(39:29):
the statues in there look like realgirls. And then it's pretty much immediately
after that that the Countess turns intoa monster and then starts spraying other girls
with wax and making them turn intowax. Mm hmm. And this was
where I put that they stepped upthe animation again, because I thought that
(39:50):
the wax statues of the girls werepretty well done, Like I immediately knew
it was supposed to be wax beforeI knew what the monster was the first
time I saw the episode. Andbecause it's like also Madam Sow's like wax,
you know what I mean, thatkind of thing, but also the
monster, like the transformation from humanto monster was really cool, and the
(40:13):
monster design itself is one of myfavorites from season one. Can you describe
what the monster looks like? Yeah, it's they have like light purple skin
and they're covered in They're wearing anoutfit that's made out of clam clam shells,
and they have shells in their handsthat's spray wax, and they have
(40:37):
shells like decorating their hair as Ihad peace. And she has this sort
of like sheer dress that comes downover everything too, which like has almost
a sparkle effect animated onto it.It's it's an honestly, like I could
see this outfit on like a runwaysomewhere, probably in the drag format,
(41:00):
you know, But I just thinkthe design is incredible and I'm gonna I
actually, I'm not even joking.I did not make this connection until I
watched this episode today. But doyou know why they chose the theme of
the clamshells? No? Guess not? Okay, because this is where we
(41:22):
get smart, right and in hishistorically, one of the signs of a
wealthy woman was wearing real pearls.Yes, clams make pearls. Okay,
thirty years later, I got it. You didn't. I don't feel so
bad because you didn't know, butI literally was like, why clams,
(41:46):
and then it came to me andI was like, Oh, that's kind
of smart, and that's that's oneof those nuances that I don't think kids
were really meant to get, youknow, and if you do get it,
it's kind of like a little treat. So that just adds adds an
additional level of me enjoying this monster. The deep name for her is Polite
(42:07):
Society, and that's the monster's name. Inganted, I am Polite Society.
I'm so pleased to make your acquaintance, which also I think is so great
for a monster name. It's can'tbe It's just I don't know, it's
this monster is just fun. Andthere's even some fun in the battle later
(42:30):
with some of the dialogue and stuff. But how does the monster attack?
By the way, how does howdoes her attacks work? She just sprays
wax jets from her hands and thenit just immediately turns anybody it touches fully
into wax m M. It's apretty I mean, like seems fairly effective.
(42:53):
She's got a whole round people,so essentially, because she's already turned
Amy and Lita or Makoto to statues, how does our battle end up unfolding?
Well, the other girls, Usagi, Ray and Minako notice that nobody
(43:15):
else, like it's too quiet andsomething's going on. And then the monster
just shows up and says that oneof them has to be Sailor Moon.
And then when she tries to attackthe other girls, Lunin Artibus jumps on
the monster and then they transform, and then Ray and Minoco's attacks don't work
(43:39):
against against it. Yeah, andI have to give Luna and artemists because
every time they do that, Ilove them more. It's one of my
favorite things is when they get involvedin the battles. Yeah, and yeah,
the both the Fire and the CrescentBeam get waxed, which again,
like we haven't seen her power failat all yet as long as she's able,
(44:02):
you know, to actually pay attentionand use it. After that happens,
we get a typical tuxedo rose andwait what oh yeah, that's right.
So right before that, though, this is just another animation or a
detail thing. But as she's likewalking towards them to attack, she lifts
(44:23):
up that sheer dress, you knowwhat I mean, and like it's kind
of walking in a certain way, suggesting she is heels on and that was
another detail that about her monster thatI just thought was really great because they
didn't have to have that. Theframes that are in there are very short,
but it adds. It's telling youmore. It gives the most character,
you know. But yeah, thentuxedo mask shows up and what is
(44:46):
this whole thing about? Because it'sthe it's one of the first times it
doesn't go as planned, right oras usual, I should say, Yeah,
it's it's kind of it's more ofa comedic thing as it turns out,
because Mamaru as ending me on,says that she won't attack the soldiers
(45:10):
if Fusagi gives the silver crystal, and then the monster says out loud that
that's not what Kunzait wants to do. And then Kunzit shows up and what
do they say? They start fightingessentially right, Yeah, like they they
start bickering between the three of them, and the monster is really confused.
(45:32):
And then yeah, which I haveto say that part with her getting confused
is again like, at least inthe English, the way that the voice
actress did it was it was cuteand funny, you know, like she's
just like such a pleasure to finallymeet you young ladies, intend to wax.
Please take this up like just so, like politely perturbed, you know.
(45:58):
And then that essentially, what isthe What is the drink that Sailor
Moon tries to offer her when they'rebickering. It's just coffee. In the
Japanese they changed it to coco becauseGod forbid kids think about coffee, Like,
I guess coffee is too strong forthe children, so it had to
be hot coco. And she correctsthe way that she offers it, right,
(46:23):
So it's like an etiquette correction. And why is that significant? Uh?
Well, because it disrects the Itcatches the monster off guard enough so
that she can use her attack andchange her back into normal. It seemed
to me like the way they playedit off in the Deck is that Sailor
Moon wasn't sure that she was actuallythe human because she didn't see her turn
(46:45):
into the monster. All she knewis that a monster appeared, which if
you're following the timeline, that makessense. So her offering her the drink
and then getting the etiquette correction waslike, I know who you are.
You're the polite society lady or theCountess Rose lady, I'm gonna use my
healing on you, poor thing. You seem very tired. All about a
(47:06):
cup of cocoa to buck you up. Well, thank you, but better
to say, would you like somecocoa? And it obviously works on the
monster and then she tries to dowhat after that, she tries to do
the same thing with Mamaru as well, but then he just goes away too
fast and says that he'll return later, and then all the girls in the
(47:30):
manner turned back to normal, andthen the episode ends in I don't know,
kind of a generic way for SailorMoon, it's just a saggy being
late for school again, and thenLuna. She runs into Luna and says
that she'll try to be more likea princess, and then she the toast
(47:51):
in her mouth falls out of hermouth and then that's how it ends.
Yeah, that's a cute moment. And by the way, the ugliest frame
in the episode occurs during the exchangewith Tuxedo Mask and Sailor Moon when she's
first realizing he's like not on theirside. And I already posted it on
(48:14):
the Facebook today, so you guyswill have seen it weeks ago. It's
the post I made about being sick. But it's it. It is.
I'm gonna just read what I wroteabout it knowing that it's eto because she's
going to get plenty of praise throughoutthe process of this show, and I'm
just saying the reason I think alot of people like the show is that
(48:36):
I don't hold I give a realopinion. But I really wrote. I
glanced up while writing my notes andcaught this frame, and I had to
pause to write this down to writeabout how bad it looks. His head
sort of seems like a partially deflatedballoon or something. The shadows and shapes
are all off. It's just atrocious. I have to post this frame.
(48:58):
That is the effect it had onme. I completely almost missed it,
and I just looked up and sawit and was like, what in the
hell is that? And then I'llbe honest, looking at the frame by
itself, without it moving on ascreen, it's a little less bad than
it seemed in the moment, soI have to give her credit for that,
(49:19):
but it's still not good. Yeah, it is. It is probably
the whole the worst tuxedo mask everlooks in the show. If you ask
me. Yeah, so, butyou know what, it's fitting that the
absolute best artist from the show alsowins that prize. I know, I
think I think it gives her morecharacter as an artist, honestly. Anything
(49:45):
about this episode, oh, Imean we talked about the ending already.
I liked her running to school. It's just a reminder. I think that
even though she's had all this growth, she's still the same character we met
at the beginning. I think that'swhat that's meant to be. Oh,
I'm surprised you didn't talk about thisthough. That shot of her looking up
(50:06):
at the crescent moon with her hairblowing in the wind. That's one of
the most memorable scenes from the showto me, because I think they use
it a lot, don't they. It's like in an ending or something or
I don't know. Oh, yeah, you're right, Yeah, there's that.
Well, I'll try to post thescreenshots of that's when we do the
episodes or when we share this episode, so you guys can find it all
(50:29):
right. Oh and then there's alsoI've seen a lot of cells of the
sequence, the part where Usaki isall shocked and then her face, her
face is like part of her faceis drawn white, and then it's that
is the frame that what you're talkingabout is right before the ugly frame?
Yeah, it's that litment, butyeah, no, it's what they do
(50:52):
a similar motif in is it CrystalClear Destiny? I think with those like
freeze frame back and forth kind ofyou I'm talking about in the dramatic moment.
Yeah, I think it's the samesame style. Does that style have
a name? I don't think so, Maman, maybe it does. I
really enjoyed that frame of Sailor Moonthough. Yeah, I'm not surprised people
(51:14):
are after I do those sales gofor a lot? I don't remember.
I just know that I've seen them, Like I've seen multiple cells from that
same exact sequence come up before theywere like all from the same cellar.
And yeah, right, well that'scool. I would love to see more
from this episode. One other animationmoment I wanted to highlight before we get
(51:37):
into the rating is when everyone's turningback to normal, we see Sailor Moon
standing up in the window right beforethat iconic moment I mentioned, And I
love that, Like, to me, there's something about like the added detail
of in any video game or animationseeing through a window and being able to
(52:00):
see something important on the other sideof it is always fun to me.
I don't know why. For somereason. An example I'm thinking of is
in Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time, when you can like look through a
window to see Gannon on the otherside. I don't know why that just
popped into my head, but it'sanother example of that. But yeah,
I enjoy moments like that, andI thought it was animated well in that
(52:22):
instance. Rate the episode first threeand a half, I guess, okay,
tell us why. I think. The only reason why I'm not giving
it higher even though it's Eto,is because, like we mentioned the there
are some ugly shots and sequences artwise, and the plot of the episode
(52:47):
just it's not super interesting to meas much as other episodes that she's done,
like I Love When, I LoveWhen. Eto was in charge of
episodes that have to do with Japanesehistory or traditions, like the the te
episode and one in season three, and then the Sword Training episode and super
(53:10):
s and then also also the Shrinethe Shrine episode and Super S as well
where Ray gets flamed Sniper. Ijust think those are more way more interesting
in terms of episodes that she's beenin that she's been in charge of animating.
Okay, I can see that forsure, And be honest, I'm
(53:30):
gonna give this episode five stars becauseI just think I connect to it in
different ways that you probably don't,which is how it should be. That's
how art works to me. Ijust find again, like the idea of
a finishing school sort of charming oneof the uh we we mentioned drag here
(53:51):
a lot. I'm just I thinkpeople who also find finishing schools charming will
want to see this video. Lookup Money Exchange and the Vivian to Charms
School, I think is what it'scalled. They essentially see these two drag
queens go through what Serena did today, and it is astoundingly hilarious. And
I just I think there's something funnyabout inherently charming, and funny about someone
(54:15):
who wants to be well mannered andjust can't despite their best effort. I
enjoy that quality in a person alot. I loved the connection we get
from Sailor Moon to real life withher tr throw, especially knowing that this
is probably the only instance that thathappens where we see such a connection between
(54:37):
her real life self and her Iguess magical self. And honestly, I
like that there were some bad framesin it more knowing that it's eto because
I and it gives me a reallygood frame of reference for how she grows
as an artist. And had Inot learned that, I think I would
(54:58):
have taken a star off for theanimation. But knowing that, it's almost
like if she didn't take those risksand see, and I'm sure she probably
got feedback on probably some of theframes I mentioned at some point where they
were like, hey, we lovewhat you're doing, but a little less
of this or careful about that orwhatever, And that's how you get better.
So that's why I'm not gonna knockher for that, because without those
(55:22):
big swings, you can't have bigaccomplishments, you know. Yeah and yeah.
So that's my reason for five stars. So three point five and a
five. Let us know how y'allwould rate this episode. Wherever you want
to comment, and let's get intothe Sailor says, there's a lot more
to good manners than knowing how towalk properly or eat politely or dance well,
(55:46):
you know, really good manners areabout how you treat other people,
and that means with respect and consideration. If you see someone struggling with a
grocery bag or a parcel, offeredhelp. That's what the Sailor's Scouts would
do, and so should you.I think you can probably guess it's all
(56:07):
about manners, yeah, but ratherthan about following like etiquette, it's more
about being kind in life in general, treating other people with respect, even
if you don't know them. Andthey give an example of if you see
someone struggling with groceries or something likethat, you should help them out.
Let's discuss this a little bit andit'll start with the example. I think
(56:30):
that example is outdated in terms ofsafety. I would not encourage a kid
to go up to any stranger whoseems struggling that's an adult and help them
unless it was literally like you thinkit's an actual emergency and they need nine
to one to one assistants or youknow what I'm saying, like I don't.
In almost all cases, I thinkit's safe to say adults do not
(56:52):
need help from children, you know, you know, just for everyone's safety.
But I think there are times andyou do want to encourage people to
act, and you just have tobe a little smarter about it. Right,
What would be a good example whenyou might encourage even a kid to
get involved in something. I guessjust maybe depending on what it is,
(57:15):
like depending on the severity of it, if you see someone just I don't
know, like like if you're inpublic and you all of a sudden see
someone pass out or look like they'reabout to be incapacitated medical emergencies, Yeah,
something like that. I think that'sreally the only, yeah, safe
(57:35):
instance where it could be depending onthe age of the kid. And this
is another one of those instances whereI honestly have to say, like screw
politeness when it comes to certain things. Like I've been approached before at gas
stations by people asking me for allkinds of things, And I had a
guy call me an asshole one timewhen I wouldn't give him my cash money.
Yeah, and it's like, listen, dude, that's just to go
(58:00):
homeless people. Well, no,it wasn't even a homeless guy. It
was like a dude who was askedhe had like a full family in a
car, he just needed gas money. And it's like, why am I
suddenly responsible for you, you know. And the thing is this, people
will look at you and assume whatyou have based on all kinds of things.
You know. But people in thisday and age, sometimes, and
(58:23):
I've said it before, will usesocial niceties and norms and the idea of
people being polite to get others todo things, or to manipulate other people
into giving them things that they maybeshouldn't. Right. Yeah, And it's
tough because if you want, ifyou see yourself as a kind and good
person, you want to be niceright in all instances. But if someone
(58:47):
is making you uncomfortable, I saythat all goes out the window and you
just walk away. In my opinion, like if you are a kid or
just alone anywhere out walking and someoneapproaches you asking for directions in a vehicle
(59:08):
and you're not in a vehicle, you know what I'm saying, Just any
time when you might be in avulnerable state, I think those are situations
where manners and all of that cancompletely go out the window. When you're
in a safe space, I thinkthose things should still be in place,
Like if you're just shopping in agrocery store or something in public around a
(59:32):
whole bunch of other people. Youcan be a little more relaxed, right,
Yeah, but don't let anyone makeyou do something you don't want to
do just because you're afraid of beingrude, you know. I think that's
the more important message to push withthis kind of thing. What about you?
Anything else? I sum it up? Yeah, that was it.
(59:55):
It's kind of an interesting one.I think as we go orward, we're
going to see what is and isn'tconsidered rude sort of slowly start to change.
And I've always been someone because I'veyou know, I'm like, I
don't know, neurodiverge, and I'llsay, and I've never quite understood why
some people view rudeness as like theworst possible crime. Do you know what
(01:00:21):
I'm saying? Yeah, Like,I grew up around people who this one
friend of mine, her mom openlyhated another friend of mine and would talk
about this kid to other kids andhow horrible she was often. And I
remember asking one time, why youdon't like this person so much? And
her answer was, well, Itook her to a fancy steak restaurant one
(01:00:43):
time, and she asked them forbarbecue sauce. That was it. That's
all it took for this lady tolabel this person as rude, which then
meant it was okay for this adultto like terrorize this twelve year old,
you know what I'm saying. Soto me, I don't really think someone
(01:01:06):
being rude is like the worst thingin the world, because we don't know
why they're being rude, and youdon't know what. Like, I think
most of the time it's not onpurpose. Probably, I think it's just
like a misunderstanding nine times out often or just not. Now, as
we move into the future, weknow a lot more people are neurodivergent,
a lot of people miss social cues. To this day, I still don't
(01:01:29):
get why that was wrong. Doyou know why that was wrong for her
to ask for barbecue sauce? No? I guess I don't really get that
either. Maybe we just are notthe fancy, steak type of people.
I'm sure someone out there could tellus why that maybe was cringe or something.
I don't know if anyone would justifyhating a child over it, honestly,
(01:01:52):
but yeah, that was just oneof those things that was to me,
I was like, oh, wow, people really have a strong reaction
to this and I'm just not likethat. So, uh, there was
one more thing I think I wantedto go over about this. What was
it on? I guess it wasn'tthat important. It felt like something important.
(01:02:15):
Oh well, we'll let it gothere. I think we have plenty
on The sailor says, is thereanything else you want to add? All
right, I'll get back to aboutthe scheduling then via Instagram and keep me
updated about your job, don't youarch we're going to do the CCS thing.
Oh yeah, thank you, Solet's do that then, Card Captors.
