(00:01):
Welcome back to Moonstar, a SailorMoon podcast. Moonstar Pride twenty twenty three
continues now with special guest Rhet Collectsaka mister Rhett m y s t E
r r h E t t Y. We were just looking at some of

(00:35):
the ending stuff. Um, becausethe next section is actually your sections,
so cool. Are you ready forthat part? I am ready there.
Somebody got into our building and oh, well, if you need to step
away, no worries, but Ialready did. I checked in with everybody,
so I think the police are onthe way, so I hope it

(00:56):
doesn't get loud. But I'm inmy office and I locked the door so
no one should margin. I feel. I feel so mean, But they
were all good. Well, SailorMoon is important, yes, exactly,
all right, go ahead, Umat the sait where exactly where are we?
We're on your focus so choo somecharacters and stuff. Um well,

(01:23):
when I was reading this earlier,I was definitely you know, I feel
like it's like a it's too easyto bring up neptune and uranus, but
they really are I think like themost impactful and at least for my journey,
just because of the way that they'represented in this show is such like
a you know, everyone has acrush on Harder Cut. It's this thing

(01:45):
where they're never the butt of ajoke. They're they're not too villainous.
Everyone looks up to them, andpeople are always complimenting them and people,
I think Usaki maybe Chibiusa, likethey have said like they want that kind
of love, like they want whatthey have and it's something that I think
is is done so well that itstill holds up to this day, like

(02:09):
their relationship and it's inspiring. Ithink I think that's a great answer.
Um, I totally agree with allof that, and of some of these
questions we already talked about. Um, what was the first specific moment you
notice between your in A and Neptuneif you can remember or anything that any

(02:29):
moment that really just sticks out toyou. Um, probably the episode where
they are in the cathedral getting likeshot or whatever, and you know they're
like dying for each other. It'slike this very like maybe not Romeo and
Juliet, but kind of has thatlike sacrificial part of it and like that's

(02:52):
like love and I think they sayit in there too, and it's and
that's like a moment that stands out. And probably during my first watch of
it, I already knew what theywere in the Japanese in Japanese, so
when I watched it, I watchedthe English version on my old VHS tapes
and I thought it was I thoughtit was pretty cool. That scene is

(03:14):
really powerful for sure. Yeah,it's one of the first times we see
um they die in the show beforethat, but this is a very it's
it's because it happens with the gun. Do you remember the like, yeah,
the black thing. Yeah, itextracts the heart crystal, and there's

(03:36):
that moment when Harka like puts herchest up against it herself, you know
what I mean. Yeah, andjust it just it really does hit you
in a way where you're like, these characters are so devoted to each other
in a way that a lot ofstraight couples aren't, you know, right,
So they are there. I thinkit's a great answer. We talked

(03:59):
a little bit about this already, but just real quick about your collection.
What got you started on collecting andtaking it seriously? I visited Japan with
my fiance in twenty nineteen, andI've always kind of been a collector and
I've always been really into like toysand games and stuff like that. So
we went to a lot of hobbyshops in Tokyo and I saw all of

(04:23):
the vintage Sailor Moon stuff and Iremember thinking it was so freaking cool,
and it was definitely out of myprice range. At the time, I
was a broke server, and Iwas like, I spent all my money
to come on this trip. I'mnot going to spend more money on toys
because what am I going to dowith toys? YadA, YadA, YadA.
And then we went back home andI went to a flea market with

(04:47):
a friend after work and we sawa Sailor Moon doll and she was like,
look it, it's Sailor Moon becauseeveryone knew that I liked Sailor Moon.
And I was like, oh,I guess this is a sign I
have to get it. And II got the doll, and she just
kind of sat on my shelf fora while. And then COVID happened and
I got extra unemployment money and Idecided that she needed a friend, and

(05:11):
I got her another doll. Itwas a super Sailor Moon doll from Japan.
And I kept the collection going fromthere because I was like, Okay,
I have this one, well nowI need the other sent she and
I need to do all the Ineed to do everything, and here I
am today. Was the first doll, the nineties moon doll. Yeah,
it was an eleven point five inchSailor Moon Adventure doll, so which fans

(05:36):
are not fans, but like collectorswould call them the pretty faced dolls from
Irwin Toy. So she's tall likea Barbie and yeah, what does the
box look like? Is it theblue one? Mine didn't come in the
box, But there's actually two versions. There's a blue box version and a
yellow box version. I did notknow that they're They're the same doll,

(05:58):
but released in different years. Ithink the first one was released in two
thousand and the yellow box was twothousand and one, because I think I
have the year two thousand production specspinder and it has the like design for
the doll boxes and the requirements andstuff. So interesting. It's so freaking
interesting. We're going to do anepisode about it. Pictures. Yeah,

(06:20):
I thought you might like to seesome of that because it has like the
design for the hang tags and stuff. Yeah, and it's like, you
can use these images, you canuse these backgrounds for your adverage. It's
so interesting. Oh, I can'twait to see that, right. What
let me get through the rest ofthese questions? Okay, this is a

(06:44):
good one. What was it aboutSailor Moon that made you really just connect
to that one above other ones?Is this a question for both me and
Chris or just me? This isfor you, but I'll actually I want
to know what Chris's answer is too. I think it is it's kind of
the timing in my life where Iwas and the oddity of how I discovered

(07:05):
it. I was at a Toysr Us the first time I ever went
to a Toys r Us in twothousand and seven, and I was kind
of at an age where I feltlike I wasn't really playing with toys,
but I was like into video gamesand movies, and vhss weren't really like
a thing in two thousand and seven, like they were trying to get rid
of them. And there was thisone VHS tape under the DVD aisle that

(07:28):
I pulled out, and it wasa Sailorman Supers VHS that had Sailor Jupiter
on the cover. And I rememberlike this weird feeling because I was a
weird kid who like I knew whatI wanted and I was going to go
and get that, and I didn'tlike try new things, but there was
something really weird that I like,I grat I gravitated towards this tape and
I purchased it. Well, Itried to purchase it, and they couldn't

(07:50):
even find it in their system atToys r US. They're like, we
don't know how we have this, and they sold it to us for like
some random price or whatever, andI took it home and it was episodes
one sixty one through one sixty threeof Supers, basically when Nehellenia gets the
spider webs everywhere in the town, and I just had never I think I

(08:16):
had watched it as like a littlelittle kid, and that's why, like
I was like, why is thisso familiar? But I just like didn't
remember it, but I had.It was so magical, and I was
like, I've never seen something likethis, and also like it wasn't on
TV. I couldn't find anything elseabout it in the store, so it
was like this super mysterious thing, and I just like fell in love with

(08:39):
it, and I was also likethere was a lot of home life issues
going on, and I just Ithink I just got so attached to it
and it became like this comfort showand also like this like thing I wanted
to discover, you know, andlike learn more about. Oh. I
think it's so fascinating that you hadthat moment where it was like this tape
is there, but it's not inthe system. Yeah, and it's somehow.

(09:03):
Also, those episodes of Supers aresome of the like the animate you
know what I mean with I don'tknow. Those just always stood out to
me. I think it was likethe best way I could be entered into
this series, especially because I wasat Toys r US and I was feeling
like, oh, I'm not alittle kid, like I don't want toys,
and then I find this kind oflike mature show there, and it

(09:24):
was I felt like, Oh,I'm in the right place, Like this
is the kind of media that Iwant at this like transition in my life,
you know. Well, and itall lined up perfectly. You walked
into the store, you were lookingat a cheaper item, you didn't want
a toy, like you were saying, and then you don't usually try new
things, and for some reason youwere like something about this is like pulling

(09:46):
me in. I think I'm hugelyinto the VHS's that's one of the things
I do collect. And you probablycan agree with this. The cover art
is straight up art on all ofthem. It's immaculate. It's yeah,
that's I have a bunch of theVHS copies, and like that's why.
It's like just having that boxed artis just so beautiful to me. It's

(10:07):
yeah, they're gorgeous. And Ithink that the mystery aspect what you brought
up is another thing that's very specificabout Sailor Moon, especially if you were
a fan back in the day.And I've referenced this on the show before,
but it was like you really hadto dig to be a fan and
put it definitely, definitely, andit made it feel very special because a

(10:28):
lot of people didn't know what itwas, not the way they do now,
Chris, what about Yeah, itwas not something that I was gonna
say, just like it was somethingthat like I would go back to class
and like nobody knew what the heckI was talking about, you know,
Yeah, yeah, sorry to cutyou off, but yeah, no,
that's fine, Chris. What's yourwhat made you choose Sailor Moon or what
connects you to it above other things. I think it's different nowadays than when

(10:52):
I was a lot younger because Iwent through I went through a phase when
I was a teenager where I wasn'treally into it as much. I was
more into you know, quote unquotelike straight guy anime is like Leech and
Naruto and that ship. Um uh. But since I've been older, um,

(11:13):
and then a production art collector,UM, I know the big the
big thing with me with Sailor Moonnow like maybe above everything else, I
don't know, but um, it'sjust the the art, the art style
and being able to um you know, own that and I know read like

(11:35):
worships you could quote eto I doat least almost as much as I do.
Uh. And then just when Idiscovered, um, how not just
for Sailor Moon, but for likea sketch word for anime, how depending
on what the color of sheets isor even just a normal white colored paper,

(11:58):
that like that's the easy, easiestway to own things that are drawn
by your favorite animator for an anime. And just like getting the opportunity to
own things that she drew for, like episodes that in s and Supers when
she was at her peak. Thatjust means a lot to me, And

(12:22):
so I think since I've been older, like the artistic the artistic effort put
into it in Sailor Moon is whatmeans the most to me. But obviously
the representation aspects, and I don'tknow, it's just one of those animes
like I have a handful that Ican just watch over and over again and

(12:43):
never get sick over either. Well, I think it's interesting that you didn't,
actually neither of you and I wouldn'teither mention the LGBT representation as or
like number one reason. And yeah, well it's great that it's in there
that I think what makes it workso well that it's not the main focus,
it's not the only thing that matters. It's sort of like these are

(13:07):
just people who also happen to existin this world, and to me,
that's like my favorite kind of representation. Actually me too, I completely agree
with you on that. But yeah, and I think it's great that because
the show was so strong on itsown without any of that already, that
we would have connected to it onthese other ways. Having all of that
is kind of like the icing onthe cake or whatever. I think.

(13:30):
Are you an artist, Chris?Do you draw? Chris? Oh me,
Oh no, I don't. Idon't. I don't draw. I
mean I used to when I wasa kid and like an early teenager,
but I don't not anymore. Iwas just curious that that was your connection
to the art style, because thatis kind of I've noticed when we do

(13:50):
the show too. It's it's whereyour focus is. So I'm curious where
that comes from. Oh yeah,no, I think that. I'm sure
if I wasn't, if I didn'tget in the anime production art stuff hobby
at such an early age, Idon't think I would, you know,
view it in that kind of perspectivelike I do now whenever we do the

(14:11):
show or watching any anime period.I think it's definitely something I didn't pay
attention to as a kid. Butbecause you've been pointing it out to me,
I've been noticing it a lot more. And it's almost like a secondary
storyline of like what was going onwith the animators, what was going on
behind the scenes? Oh right, because we get we as we go through

(14:35):
each episode. It's like, wehave one episode where the animation is like
immaculate, and then the next episodethey have the baby faces, and then
the next episode it's another person, and it's kind of like, why was
bouncing around so much? And Ididn't know it. But I've always been
a big fan of Eto's art becauseI used to obsessively collect the unedited or

(14:58):
the whatever uncut version of the sus the Sailor Moon s VHS. Yeah,
and it's all her art that that'swhat they used on that, it's
the it's I think originally here.Yes, it was originally for the Japanese
LaserDisc, right. I think it'sfigured out some of the best official art
from the show. I think.Let me ask you some general fan questions

(15:20):
and both of you can answer eachone. Okay, So Raett, you
go first, choose up to threefavorite characters from the show. I feel
like my taste in characters have definitelyevolved over the years. I would probably
say that my favorite characters are SailorMoon is always my number one. I

(15:41):
identify with her the most in allaspects, and then I would say Sailor
Mars and Sailors Starfighter. Say yeah, okay, okay, give us a
little reason why. For Mars andStarfighter, I've always particularly like, I
actually every voice actress that has portrayedSailor Mars Japanese, nineties, English,

(16:07):
and then Christina V Today. Ilove their voices and I love how they've
all portrayed Sailor Mars, and Ifeel like it's always been solid in that
way. And I also just Ilike the character. I like who she
is, and I like a lotof her dialogue, and I like the
way she interacts with people. Idon't know, she's someone that I've just

(16:30):
like I've gravitated towards, you know, throughout the years. I used to
be like I think Jupiter was myfavorite, like growing up, and then
like now I really like Mars andthen Sailor Starfighter. I just love the
drama all I love the romance dramaand the fact that they're placed there,
you know, with tuxedo mask islike quote unquote dead and I just I

(16:53):
just I think I've that's like themost dramatic, kind of like messy part
of Sailor Moon and I'm here forit and I love that. I also
think Say is really cute too.I think it's like an attractive character.
I'm not gonna refute that, andI'm just saying you get to see Saya's
chest for a little bit in oneof his transformations, and when I first

(17:15):
saw that as a teenager, Iwas like, oh, hello, exactly
how was like, can we domore of this? Right? Right?
I agree with you, Chris, what about you? Number one? There's
definitely uh Hottuka or urn Us too. I don't know too maybe yeah,

(17:40):
I guess two would probably be AmiMercury and three yeah, yeah, three
would probably Fish. I'm supprised Fioriis not up there. I was surprised.
I was waiting for that one.Yeah, I don't know. It's
kind of like a it's hard,I know. Yeah, give us your
reasons. Well, is she's alwaysbeen my favorite UM sailor guardian and like

(18:04):
the reason why I have a screencapof her tattooed on one of my arms
is because that was like the firstthing I saw in media that made me
realize that I wasn't straight um anduh Amy. It's funny. I didn't
used to like her when I wasa kid, but I think since I've
been older and I've been an adultin the older I get I think I'm

(18:27):
probably the most like her um personalitywise, and h fish Eyed. I
think it's mainly because of the thegay representation. UM. But yeah,
I mean, if I could pickanother, it's probably tied between like fish
Eye and Fiori. Um, justfor the Fiori for the same reason.

(18:48):
So UM, that'd be my myreasons why for all of them. I
think those are great characters saying greatreasons. I'm like on a Fiori kick
right now, and I'm going tobecause of these conversations, probably go watch
the r movie later. UM.I just enjoy him a lot. He
doesn't make my top three. Ihave Moon, Luna, and Mercury.

(19:11):
UM. For me, Moon,it's like the same reason as rhet I
relate to her the most in personality. UM. I definitely feel like I
can be both extremely wacky and ridiculous, but when it really matters, I
can kind of come through, youknow what I mean totally, And I
love just her the way she approachespeople who might otherwise not be treated well,

(19:33):
oh like like piggyback, piggybacking, piggy back whatever, going off of
what you said, Like not justlike a personality thing, but I also
look up to her as as arole model still to this day, like
what would USANGI do? You know? Yeah, And we saw a great
example of it recently on the showwhen she meets Jupiter for the first time,

(19:56):
because there's like that whole rumor goingon around her whatever, and she
just walks up to her and it'slike, so everyone's saying you're crazy and
scary, and I have some foodand it's so charming and sweet, and
it's like, Yeah, if wecould treat each other like that more,
not always, you know, besafe, but like when it's appropriate,
I think the word would be alittle nicer. I picked Luna because I

(20:22):
love her mentorship role with usage andshe, especially watching the show as an
adult, give so much great advicethat if you pay attention to it,
you're kind of like, oh,yeah, that's like really profoundly helpful.
And it's stuff that I think.I'm grateful that it was in the nineties
version the way it was, andI think her characters delivery Jill how do

(20:45):
you say her last name for PierreFrappier, Jill Frappier is portrayaled of her.
To me, was like the perfectbalance of like firm and you want
to listen to her, but alsosweet and caring, and it was this
great combination of both. And Ifeel like I trust the character of Luna.
Every time I see her, I'mcomforted. And then Mercury, you

(21:07):
should Yeah, go ahead, youshould, um, because I know that
you haven't really heard that much ofthe new dub but yeah, I know,
and I think you would probably likethe new Luna, even though it's
totally different. But I I rememberwhen I talked to Michelle Roff, she
said that, um, when sherecorded the s movie and um, at

(21:32):
the scene at the end where Lunatransforms into a human like that it affected
her enough that she like cried recordingit. So, UM, I think
that you'd probably enjoy that if you. I could probably feel that that's a
really powerful scene to speaking of.I love that moment, and Luna's character

(21:52):
in general is fascinating, and Ilove that she has a human form.
I'm glad you brought that up.I wasn't even going to say anything about
that, but I would. Areyou guys caught up on the new stuff
or no? Like the Cosmos?Yeah? Is? I haven't been.
Do they do anything more with heras a human. Didn't they an internal

(22:12):
I think she added a human formit like the last So does movie,
so does Artemis. Okay, Diana, I'm excited to see that because I've
seen their manga human forms, butnever well other than the Yeah, okay,
so that's exciting. And then Mercury. The funny thing is like,
as much as I relate to Moon, there is kind of like a weird

(22:33):
analytical side to me that I canget the same way as her sometimes,
like you know, when she getscaught up in her head and like can't
always figure out what certain people's intentionsare and stuff like. I've had a
lot of parallels to that. PlusI love with her character, especially in
season one. She's not like thestrongest when it comes to ability, like

(22:55):
physical like attacks or whatever, andshe comes off as almost the bravest to
me because there's that moment where she'slike, Oh, I'm gonna take on
just by myself, this Doom andGloom girl with just my bubbles in a
computer. You guys, go ahead. And she knew she was going to
die, you know what I mean. There's no way she didn't know that.

(23:17):
And I remember watching that as akid, just because she was my
favorite back then too, being likeyou know what I mean, because if
you watch a Japanese version and thenthat thing happens with the computer where she
figures out that it's an illusion andshe's like, if I can break the
illusion, they can do the rest, and then she doesn't the computer.
She's like, this is the lasttime I'm going to use this. There
are just so many powerful notes inher character throughout the show like that that

(23:40):
it's hard for me not to,you know, really be connected to her.
Rhetta And I know this changes,so this doesn't have to last forever.
But what is currently your favorite seasonand why? I did just recently
establish that the third seasons is myfavorite because I just did a whole rewatch

(24:00):
of the whole series, and Ithink it stands out and of like just
the plot that's going on is likepeak sailor Moon and you get all these
new characters. It's super exciting. And for the longest time, Supers was
my favorite season because that's what Iwas introduced to with, But definitely s

(24:23):
I think is the most like impactful. And you can also see that in
terms of like merchandise and toys thatwere released, like they were really hitting
it off right there, like theyknew. I think at that point they
knew how profitable Sailor Moon was,so like the art got better in that
season, and like the music isreally good, you know. Yeah,

(24:45):
yeah, I agree with all ofthat. Is that would you say the
merchandise hit it stride at the sametime, then I think that's when it
started kicking off and we were gettingmore dolls and characters and toys. But
I think by the time Supers cameout, then it was like at its
most crazy controlled, like out ofcontrol, like toys for every single thing,
Like they even made dolls for theAmazon's quartet. Really but yeah,

(25:10):
oh no, sorry, I'm talkingabout Japan. In Japan, I would
say in America, s was nothitting its stride and it majorly flopped,
But I think in Japan it wasvery impactful. I was gonna say,
I don't remember seeing American outer dolls. Do they have them? They do,
Yeah, I have them. Sothey did release them, not to
the scale that they had all theother dolls, but they're still they're still

(25:34):
pretty easy to find. So yeah, they continued making toys and they made
a spiral Moonheart Rod toy. Likethey they had toys to go along with
the third and the fourth season, the Spiral Heart Moon Rod toy. I've
always wanted to have it. Idon't have that one. I have the
new Proplica that recently came out.I have that one, but I don't

(25:57):
have the o G unfortunately not yet. I maybe should know this answer.
But do you play with the toysor no? I don't really play with
them. I just save them upthere. I have nieces that are ones
a gonna turn five this year. When she comes over, I let her
play with the older ones because they'reall already a little bit beat up.

(26:19):
But when I was babysitting her growingup, I made her watch Sailor Moon
and she got into it. Idon't think she watches it now because her
mom doesn't care my sister, butit is a memory with us that babysitting
time with Sailor Moon time, andshe can play with the toys and stuff
like that. You never know itmight pop back up for her later,

(26:40):
I hope. So. Right,So you've never done the full spiral Heart
trans attack just once with your problemher? No, but you know I
have tried to spin it in myhand because I don't know how the hell
sailor Moon does that. Yeah, she's crazy at it. So I've definitely
tried to figure out what are thefinger movements for that, and I definitely

(27:00):
dropped it. So it's not somethingI practice normally or a lot. That
is the most talented thing she doesactually is twirling her It's magic. It's
truly magic. Well, honestly, like the funniest thing now that you're mentioning
is, remember though, when weget to stars and it's she just holds

(27:21):
it above her hand to just twirlsin the sky. They're like, oh,
yeah, we're not animating that, right, It's just I would like
to think. I'd like to thinkthat all of her ones just have their
own ability to move on their own, and she just kind of levitates it,
she guides it. I think myhead cannon. She releases it later
and she's like, actually, there'sa mechanism inside. It's a little motor

(27:41):
that twirls, right, And nowwe have to release new toys to reflect
that. Yeah, um, Chris, what is your favorite season? Also,
s I think we've said we're superass. It's yeah, it's it's
definitely us. I mean from anartistic standpoint, Um, super was the
peak of that, but I means was too by the end. But

(28:04):
yeah, just like in terms ofeverything overall, it's it's us for me
as well. I think it's veryclose. I agree with you both on
all of those points, and it'skind of tied with me right now.
My favorite currently though, is seasonone. Part of it. It's because
we're covering it on the show, but also I really love there's something about
like firsts in Sailorman specifically, andit's like the first time we see each

(28:29):
scout is always so exciting, thefirst time we get the healing, like
the rainbow crystal. It's and there'ssomething about the storytelling in season one I
think that is more unique and lessformulaic than Oh I think so too.
I think I kind of feel whenI've gone back and watched the first season
in a way, it kind offeels like a different show from the rest,

(28:49):
Like it's format and everything, andeven like kind of the way that
the characters interact is so unlike howthey do later on. It kind of
feels like a standalone show, whichI guess it kind of does because they
all die in the end and they'rereborn, so it is kind of its
own timeline of Sailor Moon. Itcould and I think the intention originally was

(29:11):
for it to end after season one, but I'm yeah sure, and so
that's why it ends the way thatit does, because it actually could just
stop there and the show would becomplete if they decided not to continue.
So that does give season one kindof a uniqueness to it, which you
have to choose one. I'm sorry, but choose one of your favorite transformation
sequences from the nineties version me first, Yeah, risk, go with you,

(29:38):
okay. Let me also let meknow if I'm cutting out a little
bit. I know people are startingto log into meetings and stuff like that,
so I might lose a little bitof my connection. Probably Moon gorgeous
meditation. It just like has alot of cool effects on screen, and

(30:00):
I like how she holds it likea sword. Fair enough, we said
transformation, but I'll include attack.Oh my god. Okay, okay,
favorite transformation. Uh, probably it'seither the first season or third season for
Moon. Oh yeah, oh mygod, I'm sorry. Yeah for Moon,
I'm lacking my specifics. That's okay. Yeah, for Moon and the

(30:21):
first season or the third season, there's they're both great. Um, Chris,
what about you pick an attack anda transformation, like for any character
or just oh okay, my favoriteattack. M hmm, I think it's

(30:41):
okavolution. Oh that's a good one, right yeah. Um. But honestly,
like any of the four final attacksin the original season. For I
mean, it's mainly because of Eto'sanimation, but um uh, and then
transformation probably it would be one ofUsaki's as well, probably the Cosmic Heart

(31:06):
season three. Yeah, yeah,I have to also do Sailor Moon season
three. Cosmic there's something so welldone about that one. Eto did that,
right, yeah, And it's it'slike the movements are perfect with it.
They all kind of make sense ina weird way, does that you
know what I mean? Like yousometimes in like the crystal transformations, it's

(31:26):
a little bit like what and thecoloring, I think is it pops really
well? There's something about the colorsthat they used in that season two.
I think the eternals are a littlebusy for me about you guys for the
new one? You mean no,I mean sorry, like Sailor Stars when

(31:47):
she gets the big wings and everything. Oh oh, too much. I
really hate the wings. I've alwaysI've always hated them. The only time
that I enjoy them is when sheis in her own house, like knocking
things off of her shell. Iwas gonna say that's my favorite like scene
from the show, because like,I always hated the wings, and I
just love that they're causing an inconveniencefor her because it's like the show poking

(32:08):
fun at how dumb they are.Yes, and then she throws the pizza
because she doesn't have a tiara anyway, That's such a good scene that kind
of does make up for it.And then my favorite attack is shinok illusion
just so pretty. I love theway you see the water drop with the
sound effects. It kind of doesthe spiral thing up around her. And

(32:30):
then specifically I love the way theyanimate it when it's not the stock footage
like and you know in the movieswhenever they do the like little very yeah.
Um, you remember in Super swhen there's like the moment with the
cannon and Mercury like clocks it inthe movie and she clucks it with her
visor and then she shino illusions thecannonball out of the sky. Yes,
I'm just like that is my utility. That's why she's my girl, because

(32:52):
she's she's there, like anyway she'sshe's there, hermione. I'll tell you,
if if I had her power,I wouldn't even think to throw water
at things. I would be like, I guess there's nothing we can do.
You guys, She's just like,no, let me just freeze it,
right, okay this one. Didyou have time to choose a favorite

(33:14):
episode? Yeah, I would saythat it would be I think it's one
sixty one. No, actually,no, just kidding. One sixty six
the final episode of Supers is myfavorite. The animation it is. I
kind of like that the villain getsaway and I the falling scene is just
so cool to me, and itis unlike all the other finales of a

(33:39):
season, and it's kind of thislike anti climactic, but like I feel
like the circus doesn't need this biglike thing. But it's mainly the art
for me. And like, becauseI had that VHS tape I found from
Toys r Us and it left offwith the final like there was two episodes
or something after that that I neversaw for the longest time, and so

(34:01):
like I was hunting for them forso long and I finally saw that last
episode on my Space someone had uploadedit there. Wow, and and the
sink was off. The audio wasalso the first time I watched it,
like it just like wasn't making sense, but it I felt very achieved when

(34:22):
I found that episode, and I'vealways been captivated by it. I think
that's a great answer. Also, fun fact, the reason you couldn't find
it that specific tape is the rarestout of all of them that has and
it's only the last two episodes onit. I have been searching for it.
And actually, so you collect theHS, right, I do?
Do you own that one? Ihave two of them. Oh. I

(34:44):
was gonna say, I know someonethat's selling it, but they're selling it
as a set, and I don'treally want to go all out and buy
the set, but I really wantthat one, so I might cave and
do it. Well, that mightbe be where are you looking? Because
I fell I collect. Like whatI do is I go to these garage
sales and stuff and I get theGoodwill and all that, and I compile
sets and then I but because thatone is so rare, I cannot sell

(35:07):
it individually because I'll never be ableto do a full set of Supers.
Wait, you would have known ifyou were talking to me about it.
I don't think you're the seller.I'm talking probably not. Then Oh,
what do you sell like on eBayor I do? But I have a
website too. I did Sailor MoonVideo dot Com. Oh cool, I'll
have to check that out. Yeah, And it's it's like I sell stuff
on it, but it's more likeI realize all of the or a lot

(35:29):
of the information about the vhs isout there was incomplete or incorrect, and
I was like, I just wantto make a website that fixes that,
and then you can also kind ofbuy stuff there if you want to.
You don't have to, So,yeah, you can get all the info
on all of it there if youwant Sailor Moon Video dot Com. Yeah
yeah, but yeah, that Ithought that. I wonder why that is

(35:50):
so rare. I guess it's thelast volume they made, so and they
probably were like, this is notselling vhss or off the shelves at this
point, We're going to DVDs.Let's just like yeah, yeah, which
is funny. Yeah, because thatvolume of the DVD from Supers is actually
the most common that some of themost common DVDs so weird. Yeah,

(36:14):
I have I have two copies ofthe DVD same same, specifically though those
let's just gush over those DVD reversiblecovers for a second. I'm so glad
they didn't. Oh no, it'sso beautiful. Do you have any of
those? Chris uh Not? Idon't think I have any anymore? Um

(36:35):
I did. The only ones Iever owned were the first volume of S
and then UM I own two ofthe Super S DVDs. But um,
I still love I still love allthe all the tapes like from S and
Super S that um I've had forlike since I was a kid, don't
There's something about him where it's justespecially with the first release of the DVD

(37:00):
that like they really put so muchback then into the presentation of things and
making it beautiful and like more sturdyand stuff. And now you get something
like even a blue right and likethe new Sailor Moon stuff when they release
it. There's something about the artand the box presentation that just doesn't click
for me. I'm right there withyou. I don't know, it feels

(37:21):
very um, I don't know.I know that they're in society in general
right now, there's kind of likea movement for like kind of minimalist kind
of this like weird modern sleekness, but like in Sailor Moon, we need
loud, we need like colors andbrightness and like interesting things. And I
particularly like it when they go darkerwith the covers, like like kind of

(37:45):
the laser disc stuff from the nineties, just like the darker colors are always
greater. And yeah, this newstuff is not clicking for me. I
agree. I think you're it's gotto be the color palette because everything now
is sort of like it's the SailorMoon characters, but then they're on that
kind of like dull white pink yes, and it's just sort of like moral

(38:06):
whatever. And I kind of like, I don't want to diss the person
reanimating some of these posters and artwork, but I feel like the poses are
an issue for me too. They'renot um they're some of like when I'm
looking at your website right now,and like looking at some of the poses
that they have in the past, they're almost like humans can't really achieve some

(38:30):
of those poses, and I feellike that's a good thing. I feel
like, that's what makes it solike whimsical. No, I totally agree
with you, and it's it's something. It's the Jupiter pose for me,
specifically at the end of her transformation, Like you know, when Jupiter at
the end of her transformation with thehands, she's kind of shaped like a
four. Yeah, And then Inever noticed that before. Oh my god,

(38:53):
she is. Yeah. I thinkI think everyone's trying to look like
they're symbol a little bit. Ohmy god, you just blew my mind.
But it is. It's awkward. Is that what you're gonna say.
It's yeah, because like I remembermy friend who was obsessed with Jupiter as
a kid, trying to do thatstuff, and she just never could,

(39:15):
you know what I mean. Iremember always looking at her like that it's
not right. Not not judge away, but you know what I'm saying,
I'm just like, and then iwould try to do like the weird Mercury
pose and I'm like, this feelsweird wearing my knees together, like right,
but that is sort of what itis. And then in the newer
stuff, they all just kind ofstand there normally, yeah, or they've
got like a hand on their hipan arm in the air kind of thing

(39:37):
like I don't know, m well, you heard it here new merchandisers step
it up and I'm just kidding.Please. I'm sure they've heard it so
many times they there's been apologies made, hasn't there? I think so.
And I think we also are inthis in a situation where it's like certain

(39:58):
companies who are not as big licenselike get a license, but then because
they don't have a big budget, the images and stuff they're allowed to work
with are extremely limited, and Ithink they're given guidelines like you can't edit
this, you can't change that exactly. So whatever the issue is, identify
it and fix it. Whoever ishow about that? That might be a

(40:20):
TOEA animation thing. I know they'reparticularly very very strict on how things can
be manipulated, so they need tobe listening to us, but I doubt
they will. Well, here's thething, they got it right before,
so they can do it again, right, they just got to totally how
to hit that. That's optimistic.I appreciate that outlook right. Well,

(40:42):
I mean it's kind of like ifyou've done something once, you can do
it again for the most part, unless it's something crazy and dangerous. But
all right, let's see, doyou have a favorite movie or special and
do you know the Supers Specials?Do you know what I'm talking about?
Yeah, of course I would saythat that S. I think the Arm
movie is the best all around. But I watch the S movie every Christmas

(41:04):
morning, and I guess that wouldjust be the one that I always go
back to. But I don't know. I think, like, logically,
I think the our movies my favorite, but like spiritually I like the S
movie. I feel that also sucha fantastic tradition. Oh yeah, great,
you have to do it. I'mgonna I'm gonna start this year.

(41:27):
I'm not even Joe. And youknow what it qualifies because there's that moment
where tuxedo mask is Santa exactly. If if any movie has a Christmas reference,
it's automatically a Christmas movie to me. If any movie has Snow,
it's a Christmas movie to me.I don't see Snow, so I'm like
magic exactly me too. Yeah, where Chris is like it's disgusting. No,

(41:51):
yeah, but we're like can wedo and play? Um? Yeah,
Chris? What about you? Ifyou have to choose a favorite movie,
You're Special. I would also bethe our movie. Yeah, I
think we've said why. Um.I would choose Amy's First Love the Super
s Special because it was one ofthose that I didn't know existed for a

(42:13):
long time, and then I thinkI saw a fandom of it, and
then I saw that she got herown unique transformation. And then they did
the mercury Acra mirage in it,which is animated by Eto. I'm pretty
sure no, but it's somebody else. The woman who did the whole special,
um Mihoshimogasa. She she also didepisodes of season five. She did

(42:36):
the episode like the made Cafe episodewhere all the scouts are dressed up and
really I never clocked that. Ithink that she's known to be good,
right, Yeah, I like itfor the fifth season. They probably had
a higher budget for that special twobecause I think it was paired with the
movie, right, So yep,she had more time to work on that.

(42:57):
I don't know why they didn't localizeOh, because her there's like some
gay stuff in it, or there'slike implied possible gay moments. That's probably
why they didn't localize it in thenineties anyway, did they ever do the
did Viz do it? Yeah,I did not know that. I'm gonna
watch that, I honest see howthey did. I don't know if it's
on the movie DVD or how itmust be because I don't own any of

(43:22):
those. Yeah, which movie isit with? Supers movies? Supers?
Yeah, yeah, that makes sense. All right. This is the last
fandom based question. Rhett. Chooseone specific scene from the show that's your
favorite and why. Well, I'dhave to go with the scene where she's
knocking shit over with her wings andthrowing the pizza. I think that whole

(43:44):
episode is just entertaining, but Iparticularly I like that goofiness of the scene
because there's so much like depressing stuffthat's going to happen afterwards. It's this
nice little moment, you know.Yeah, I think that's a great answer.
What about you, Chris? Ithink for me it would be something
that's more it's pretty emotional. Butum, there's I mean, I think

(44:06):
all of my favorite scenes overall wouldbe from like one twenty four and one
twenty five. But in m inone twenty five when she when Usagi almost
kills herself to save Hotaru, Yeah, that's just yeah, it's so it's
so intense and like amazingly done.Yeah, that part when she jumps into

(44:30):
what is it Pharaoh nineties what it'scalled? Yeah, Yeah, that's a
really intense moment. S in general, has would you say has the darkest
ending? Yeah? I think so, because all of them are pretty dark,
but that one is very Yeah,it's very mature, it is,
and I think it takes a higherlevel of understanding to get all the nuances

(44:51):
going on there the years. Ithink I would pick the episode in season
one where the Inners die because Ithink each of their moments where they go
out is like so well done. They each you really care, like,
at least I know every time Iwatch them, Diet like hits me in

(45:12):
the stomach, and it feels almostlike the most important or the most permanent,
especially the first time you see itbecause you don't know what's coming next,
and at the time, if youdidn't know there's going to be more,
it's kind of like wait what Soyeah, I think that just hits
especially well. All right, Sothis last part, I'm going to see
how it plays out, and ifit's like too much of a downer,

(45:35):
I'm not going to put it inthe episode. But I do think this
is important because this is the MoonPride special, and I was telling Chris,
you know, this is for theSailor Moon community, but in part
it's also for our community, theLGBT community, And I just kind of
wanted to take like a climate snapshot. I guess of where things are today
in twenty twenty three, and it'sJune when we're recording, so this is

(45:58):
the summer of twenty twenty three. And as we mentioned in the beginning,
all three of us are in verydifferent locations in the same country where things
are feeling extremely different for each ofus right now. Probably, So I'm
gonna start with Rhett. Can youkind of describe what the climate is for
LGBT people in California, your area. I would kind of say that it's

(46:22):
pretty similar to the rest of theworld, at least I know that I
don't see as much pushback on LGBTstuff like laws and stuff. I don't
see as much as that here. Also, I'm not involved, like I
don't have kids of my own.I'm not involved with the school systems or
anything. But my fiance's family theylive in Orange County. I live in

(46:47):
Los Angeles, County and they arepretty extremely conservative to the point where they're
not accepting of us. So it'sjust like people who are just forty minutes
away from us, US in familyare not accepting. So it is.
It's still a thing that we dealwith. And I don't think where where
I live is necessarily like a shieldto that kind of stuff, you know,

(47:13):
m And I think it's important thatpeople hear that because sometimes when you
live somewhere where it's a little lessI wouldn't say it's like drastically less safe,
but it's more a little noticeable. It's you can think about places like
la or other I guess Portland's agood example of a place you might think
of as being exceptionally safe. AndI think it's important that we recognize that

(47:37):
no matter where you are right now, this is actually affecting all of us,
because because getting getting into that mindsetof like, oh, well there
are some people in a bubble,or oh maybe if I just move there
everything will be fine, that couldbe kind of dangerous thinking. I think.
So I'm glad that you let usknow about that. Do you feel
safe out and like public to becompletely yourself? Meaning do you feel you

(48:00):
can wear what you want to wear, or do you feel you have to
edit anything when you go to thegrocery store. I do. I feel
safe. I'm not worried about howI'm presenting myself as much as I used
to, especially like I see othergay people around me, and but I
think, I don't know if thisis an internal thing or if it's still

(48:22):
a thing, but like I stillget nervous, like holding my fiance's hand
in public, you know, likehe wants to hold my hand, and
if we're walking down the street andlike another person's coming, like I'll quickly
put my hand down, and Ifeel like shit doing that. But I
mean, I've had bad experiences inthe past, and so maybe it's just
more like a trauma response. ButI don't always feel that welcome to do

(48:45):
that. But I'm not afraid tobe myself alone. You know. That's
a good thing. I think.Regarding the hand holding thing, though,
that I think is such an interestingtopic for a community because it's almost like
there's one mindset about it where you'relike, I want to be out and
proud and represent myself correctly, andI should be able to hold my fiance's

(49:08):
hand just like anybody else in public, right, But when you have had
experiences like you have and like I'vehad, you know that that's inviting that
kind of behavior sometimes and you're like, you know, you know what,
I can live without it, Andit's exactly and I don't necessarily feel like
I'm losing a lot by just likeconfined like not doing that, you know

(49:30):
what I mean. If it meansI can get through target and not have
an issue or whatever, it's notworth fighting for it. It's not that
it's not going to ruin, makeor break my day, you know.
Yeah, It's like if I'm tryingto check out and they're like, oh,
I'm not going to check you outbecause I can tell you're you know
whatever, then that's when I'm goingto have a problem with you or whatever
it is. But like that kindof stuff, that's interesting. What about

(49:53):
you, Chris, where what areyou feeling in your area? You're in
the so let's give people so rhetYou are in the western area of the
United States. Are on the Westcoast, Yes, Chris is in the
north. Chris, tell us what'sgoing on up there where I am?
Just outside of Minneapolis. Yeah,it's pretty safe, and I feel safe

(50:19):
walking around. I very often goto the Minneapolis area, and just the
last like three times I've been there, I just once I got there,
I just walked around everywhere, andI'm totally comfortable wearing like walking around wearing
crop tops there. And a lotof the area that I am walking around

(50:43):
is a lot of the people arearound my age range, and they're a
lot of them aren't straight either. And I regularly go to the main gay
club in Minneapolis. So yeah,at least um the metro area has always
here has always been liberal and veryaccepting, so I never feel unsafe.

(51:07):
It's really only unsafe in Minnesota,I think if you in the in this
kind of context, if you gomore in the rural like northern um parts
of the state. So I've yeah, I've always felt comfortable being who I
am here so far. I'm gladto hear that. It's I've been to

(51:29):
Minnesota a handful of times in mylife and it's always had really nice vibes
for me. Um. And Iknow that in the north it's supposed to
be a little more liberal in general. Um. But again, like we
were saying with Rhett, I alwayshave heard that LA is like that,
and it sounds like it's kind ofa very mixed bag there. Um yeah,

(51:49):
depend Like, like I said,it's like it's such a massive like
a few million people live here, you know, so there's different neighborhoods,
different cities that are all like justout side of the city that can be
so different. Yeah. Well,I think we're in this point. We're
definitely better off than we were aboutten to twenty, especially thirty years ago.

(52:12):
But it is work sort of hittingwhat I kind of knew was going
to happen eventually, which this isjust every community always goes through this.
Progress is never linear. So likewe've made all this progress, we've been
on a big uphill. Now thepeople who don't want us to make progress
are going to start getting really uppityand we're going to have to deal with
it. And this kind of thingalways happens in my location. I'm in
the southeast of the United States, and I'm just about as far south actually

(52:37):
as you can go geographically and stayin the country for the most part.
And it doesn't really feel good herefor LGBT people right now. For several
reasons. We've had a lot ofanti LGBT laws passed us in the last
year. They're I think six billsor something we're up recently. They're attacking

(53:01):
the way the education system is allowedto discuss things. They are there's a
lot of cult like behavior in myarea that is anti LGBT, and not
just in my local area, butin the I think in the South in
general. Right now. Unfortunately, there's stuff going on with gun violence that's

(53:24):
it sounds funny because that's like almosta separate issue, but it's not really
because in where I'm at, theyhave something called a standard ground law.
Stand your ground laws in Alex's areadefined stand your ground laws allow individuals to
use deadly force if they reasonably believethat such force is necessary to prevent imminent
death or great bodily harm to themselvesor another. Additionally, these laws authorize

(53:50):
deadly force to prevent the imminent commissionof a forcible felony. In Alex's area,
it is not a requirement for individualsto retreat to a place of safety
instead of using deadly force. Properapplication of these stand view ground laws require
proof that one the defendant reasonably believedthat deadly force was necessary to prevent imminent

(54:10):
death or great bodily harm to himselfor herself or another, or to prevent
the imminent commission of a forcible felonyto the defendant, acts sunder and according
to the circumstances set forth in redactedstatues specifics, which presumes a reasonable belief
as to the necessity of force inthe context of defending dwellings, residences,

(54:31):
or vehicles. If a defendant hasbeen charged with a violent crime and can
prove that either of those factors applyto their case, then they are immune
from prosecution for that offense. Sowhat's happening now is people are trying to
provoke other people into doing something thatcould potentially then be seen as, Oh,

(54:52):
now I'm nervous because I made youmad and you're being aggressive, so
I'm going to shoot you. Peopleare getting shot just going up to people's
houses, turning around and or driveway. You know, it's really wild.
And the reason that connects to theLGBT thing is let's say someone knows someone's
gay and it's like, I'm justlooking for a reason. Well, now
they have a really like easy wayto kind of provoke a situation where they

(55:16):
you know what, I'm saying wherethey can do whatever they want to you.
So I'm glad that in your areas. I think my area is not
the absolute worst of it in thiscountry right now by any means, but
it's up there for sure. MaybeI'm wrong, maybe it is the worst
of it, But I wanted totake this snapshot now because I want to

(55:39):
see how this sounds next year, how it compares to where we are,
and then in five years and whatever, because I almost feel like it might
just be in my mind, butI feel like our community tends to forget
the struggles we go through very veryquickly because we're not in mainstream history.

(56:01):
And I don't think that's necessarily evenour fault, Like we just aren't taught
about it in school, right.Yeah, And we've made a lot of
progress really quickly lately, but thatcan be taken away so freaking fast,
and it can get dark really fast. And I don't want to scare people,
but I think information is important. So I'm just going to make this
announcement here. I think I've toldChris you may have heard this already,

(56:23):
but the what is it? TheHuman Rights Campaign? Okay, So,
for the first time in the UnitedStates, the Human Rights Campaign declares a
state of emergency for LGBTQ plus people. This is due to what we've just
kind of been discussing in the lastsegment and just a little quote from this
article, LGBTQ plus Americans are livingin a state of emergency. The multiplying

(56:46):
threats facing millions in our community arenot just perceived, they are real,
tangible, and dangerous. And thenit says the group's president, Kelly Robinson,
said, in many cases, theyare resulting in violence against LGBTQ plus
people, for families to uproot theirlives and flee their homes in search of
safer states, and triggering a tidalwave of increased homophobia and transphobia that puts

(57:07):
the safety of each and every oneof us at risk. Alongside the emergency
declaration, the group will release adigital guidebook including health and safety resources,
a summary of state by state laws, know your rights information and resources designed
to support LGBTQ plus travelers and thoseliving in hostile states. And this announcement

(57:28):
was made just a few days intoPride month of twenty twenty three by the
HRC Human Rights Campaign. I hopethis is not why this is happening.
But some people are speculating that thishas something to do with the twenty twenty
four election, like trying to getvotes for a certain political party. I
wouldn't surprise me. Yeah, butI would say, let's do this because

(57:55):
people respect numbers. I guess thefirst number that pops into your mind zero
to ten. Zero is completely unsafe. Ten is nothing bad will happen to
you where you are. How safedo you feel in today's climate where you
are, Rhett? Did you sayon a scale of one to ten?
Yeah? Or did I make thatup? How safe? So like ten

(58:17):
being the safest? Yes, geez, I'll give it a seven. Okay,
what about you? Chris M Eightand a half. That's pretty good.
Actually, so your two areas.Honestly, I know it's not perfect,
but for people who are looking torelocate, it sounds like there's a

(58:38):
couple of ideas out there. Iwould not suggest my area. I'd give
it a three. And that's agenerous number. It's a generous number.
It's based on a personal experiences.I can't I do deliveries here to supplement
my income, and there are somany times when I'll go into a store
to pick up something and the personbehind the counter just stares daggers at me

(58:59):
and will not talk, and thenit had to wait for another employee to
interact with me. It's really bizarre. And after a certain amount of things
you start to realize like, oh, it's because of my hair and I
looked this or you know what Imean. But yeah, so there's that
kind of stuff going on, plusall the laws, and yeah, they're
safer places you could be. Idon't know. I think that shook out

(59:20):
kind of how I thought it would. Do you guys want to add anything
about that? No, not really. I mean I appreciate you doing all
this. I think looking back onall this would be important, you know,
yeah, And I want to makesure that it doesn't. I want
us to give our little authentic momentof how we really feel here where it
can't be like adjusted later for history. Do you know what I mean?

(01:01:54):
way for you guys to get readyif you haven't played the game would be
to watch his coverage of it,and then that way you kind of have
an idea what is sailing with anotherstory like, kind of what it looks
like, what the basic storyline isand all that, so people can look
forward to that. Chris, doyou want to add anything at the end
here? Just my next interview willbe my three So that's awesome. I

(01:02:24):

be specifically yet, but I justdid to this past week and I'm hoping
it'll be done relatively soon. ButI wanted to kind of be a bigger
name again, just like every otherMilestone interview I've done has been. So

(01:02:45):
I'm way more focused on quality overnumber at this point. So I'm hoping
that it will happen soon ish.But I mean, if it takes almost
a month to get a bigger nameand anime again or animate video games,
then that's fine. So just anybodywho follows us, like, look out
