Tona I'm ready forbidow Crystal alert SinaMan, I was so preoccupied I didn't
(01:36):
even hear it go on. Ican't believe we wasted our whole evening waiting
for Cilly Andrew. Is he goingto get a piece of my mind?
Just transform? Welcome back to Moonstar. The hyatus is finally over. I
(02:05):
know, it was kind of awonky long time, and we kept wanting
to come back, and then wehad other stuff come up, you know,
how life goes. But inadvertently Irealized I'm kind of accidentally giving you
a more realistic experience of the waypeople had to experience this show back in
the day, you know, becauseyou caught random episodes here and there,
(02:27):
or there would be you know, the whole summer between when they would release
new episodes and these random breaks forholidays and stuff like that, along with
for sailor moon you know, later, straight up stop dubbing it. Save
our Sailors came along and we hadthat whole pop tart thing that I loved
a reference. I just find thatso funny. But yeah, so we're
back in time for June, officiallyin time for summer. We have a
(02:52):
great summer planned yeah, I don'twant to say too much. Today we're
going to cry to day, We'regoing to cover Oh, I gotta go
back to the script. So hi, I'm Alex one of your hosts.
You knew that. And this weekon Moon Star, a Sailor Moon Podcast,
Chris and I get back to ourweekly format, covering episode twenty five
(03:13):
of the original deep dub titled TooMany Girlfriends. This episode, along with
the following three, were some ofthe last episodes that I saw if Sailor
Moon as a kid. And ifyou want to find out how that happens,
stay tuned. Let's just get intothe episode I'll see in the outra.
(03:36):
So it's been an interesting week. The last thing people will have heard
from us would be the one yearspecial, which for me, it's been
a full year. For you,it's only been a little under a full
year because you kind of showed uppretty quickly. I think I only made
it like five or six episodes inbecause the first, I want to say,
(03:59):
one of the first ones we didtogether was what do you remember what
it was? I think it Idon't remember if it was. I think
it was like five or episode fiveor six. Maybe it was the Chinchilla
episode, wasn't it I think it? Or it was the one right before
that, I think the first time. So how does it feel? We
didn't really talk about it last week, but how does it feel having done
(04:20):
this that long? It doesn't feellike it's spun out? It doesn't it
feel? It feels really quick tome too. But I think in that
short amount of time, because in'tthe grand scheme of things. I guess
the year isn't that long. Ifeel like we've made a lot of progress
and I'm really proud of like wherewe are versus where we started from.
(04:44):
I also wanted to mention you hadgotten feedback before from I think Susan Roman
and probably other people, Oh youshould have a radio show and you're like,
no, I don't want to doall that. Well you kind of
do have one now, so yeah, never say never. Um would you
have you? Has your thought onthat changed at all? Would you ever
(05:04):
do like a mainstream gig on radioor voice? Uh? Probably not just
I don't know, Like I thinkby now, I would just do what
I do myself, like not relatedright, not so much a radio thing.
You're happy, happy in your laneright now. That's fair enough.
(05:25):
Uh so tell me about your week. What happened this week? I was
good. It was mostly um.Wednesday through Friday night, I was in
the city, um because Wednesday wasthe My Friends, the next series of
like monthly shows that they do,and that's the one that I sent you
(05:48):
like two clips of. Yet thosewere great. UM. I love the
Monster one because I've seen that video. But yeah, so as soon as
she I was like, is thisokay? Yeah, I know what this
is, um, and then goinginto Lady Gaga Monster was of course the
appropriate choice. What are the performersnames? Do you know? Yeah?
(06:13):
But the ones I sent you, yeah, the one that was an actual
woman was Sigourney Beaver, who wasa finalist on Dragula the last season.
Which one did she do? Theshe did the Papa Natar song, Yeah,
yes, yes. And then theother one that was doing the Monster
(06:34):
video was a lunum Muse who's oneof the one of the best. Um,
she's only my he's only my age, and but he's been doing drag
for a long time. Is oneof the best and most well known queens
in this in the city here.I mean, I wouldn't be shocked if
we saw some of these people.Well not the Dragula one. Maybe they
(06:57):
would I don't know, but someof the other ones pop up on something
like drag Race or Dragula in thefuture. What do you think? What
direction do you think they would go? Say their name again, the one
who did the monster Luna Muse.Yeah, would they do drag Race or
Dragula? Do you think? Probablydrag Race because they don't. I mean
the only like horror slash darker thingthat they do is my Friends show.
(07:24):
Um like they were just on Friday. I wasn't there, but um Friday,
like early evening they were. Theywere part of a drag show at
them All America that Sashavalore was alsodoing. Oh wow, she's really well
known for because she did nightgowns inNew York City for a long time before
(07:44):
she was on the show, andthat was a really big It's like a
competition in the I don't know,in the nightclub. I guess they probably
do something similar over there. Well, that's exciting. Do you have plans
to see more drag this week?I don't know. In the next thing
I would go to at I meanthe one that I went to on Friday
after Wednesday was um, one ofmy other like the other main drag performer
(08:09):
that I'm friends with, that littleSteer that also does justin shows on the
CIA. That was their first timeposting austral since they've moved here because they
moved here from Boston last fall. That was that was really cool too.
It was like it was sci fitheme. I would like that. I
love sci fi. I like wheneverit goes alien. I don't know.
(08:31):
They had someone who was supposed tobe like their whole thing was they were
an alien on the last season ofDrag Race and then they got sent home
first and I was kind of bummedout because I was like, this would
have been interesting to see. Butalso I think they were like maybe a
little green, you know. Yeah, and they might end up coming back
in the future, so we'll see. That's enough about drag stuff. Did
(08:54):
you do any interviews this past week. No, I'm I'm sure probably the
next ones I do will be thenext because the next there's there's only one
more upcoming Gunson character in the nextupdate. Um, it's a female character
that will probably I'm sure there whoevervoices them will be announced like in the
(09:15):
next couple of weeks and then myfavorite later this week. Um, it's
always the first week of May ismy favorite. My it's my personal favorite
update for Fire Emblem Heroes, whichis the fire Emblem Mobile game that every
Fire Emblem character across every single gamethat's been released so far as part of
and um, the first week ofMay is always the fallen slash like the
(09:41):
fall fallen means like evil slash possessedversions of of the characters. So,
um, every May there's like,I don't know, four or five characters
that get evil slash like or evilor possessed versions of their characters. So
(10:01):
I'm I'm I'm hoping that they aren'tall going to be like characters that I've
already like, people that I've alreadyinterviewed when that gets revealed later this week.
I never thought about that. Butyou are kind of dependent on like
what the new content is feeding intowho you're going to talk to. Yeah,
so it's a little less of likeyou choosing and more of the content
(10:24):
picks for you. But I guesshow do you feel about that? Well,
I mean, that's definitely how itis in the case of like Gensen
and Firearm them but not so muchlike you know, obviously I've done plenty
of voice actors that aren't part ofeither franchise yet, so true, that's
true. Well, I hope thosego well whenever it does come up.
(10:46):
And I had a friend asking meif you have any plans to dig more
into the card captors voice actors orif or if I could nudge you in
that direction. So I'm guessing,I guess I'm guessing you mean like from
the original like censored cast. Well, yes, but also any of the
(11:09):
any of it would really be finebecause I think here I like that we
also have, like for the SailorMoon ones, we have these dub interviews
and we have the old ones becauseI think it's you know, both have
their merit. So yeah, it'swell, now that you say that,
that just makes me like, haveit epiphany kind of because I've I've done
(11:33):
the woman that plays Soccara in thein the Texas dubs of stuff, um,
like the woman that like in thein the Clear Card series and the
sub Assa series. Um, I'vedone the woman that did Soccera for just
one of the movies. So I'vedone all but all but one, like
(11:54):
Incarnation of SOCCERA. I've done oneincarnation of Yuki, one incarnation of shah
Roon, one of Poya. I'vedone one of the main villains from Clear
Card. I've done I've done theoriginal series of Carol, like the one
that was censored. I've done theClear Card Tomo Yo. Yeah, I've
(12:16):
done like a bunch of people inthe franchise already, I guess see.
So yeah, any first of all, I know, I know you don't
mind if I use any of that, but anything from that, like even
when coming back to Sailor Moon like, I would find it fascinating. Have
you interviewed Jupiter the viz dab Jupiter. Yeah, I'm going to find it
(12:37):
really fascinating when we get there andI start putting those out to compare her
approach and her experience of everything likebeing sailor Jupiter being associated with her to
Susan romans, because they're gonna haveto totally I would think, maybe not
completely different, but they're going toconnect to the character in different ways.
Yeah. And when you're a fanof the show, at least in my
(13:01):
opinion, whatever iteration you prefer,I'm always fascinated by new information, period
right, Bass is where I comefrom with it, So whatever a version,
I'm getting something interesting about. I'mkind of happy there. Which speaking
of, I got a few thingsthat are kind of exciting for us this
week that we're going to do episodeson later. One is an official I
(13:26):
think it was called Poju's World, and it's a collector's magazine from the nineties
that focuses on trading cards and theyhad an entire volume that was the Sailor
Moon collectible card game. So Ihave that and we're going to do an
episode about that. And then Igot one of the Old and America volumes.
I actually have two that I foundbecause we were talking recently. Remember
(13:48):
I think I said, oh,I don't know if we had anything like
Na Kayoshi. Yeah, And thenI did some research and of course we
did. I just didn't know aboutit, which is kind of how the
world is. So that's sort ofa correction for me, and it'll be
fun to dig into that because it'ssomething I didn't know existed, yeah until
recently. Also, I have myeye on something else I'm not going to
(14:11):
talk about yet, but it wouldin my opinion, be four hour show,
specifically like one of the single coolestthings I could possibly get for us,
And I'm just going to say thatoff are, I'm going to tell
you this is getting cut out itemobtained. That means you get to hear
this super secret segment after all.But it's I'm trying to get It's a
(14:39):
deek. I don't know. It'slike the show. It's like the binder
they sent to stores that were sellingSailor Moon stuff in the nineties and it
has like a whole like organized thingin it where it's like you can get
these transparencies of the backgrounds. Thisis like the description of the characters and
so all like laminated and stuff.Oh yeah, and for our show focusing
(15:03):
on the deep Dub, I can'tthink of like a better place for that
to go because, you know, first I'm going to scan it all and
I think that's like Sailor Moon historythat deserves to be shared with everybody.
So I'm gonna, you know, put that out. But then I would
really be so sad if that endedup in some dusty collector's shelf that no
one ever got to hear anything aboutit or seeing it, you know what
I mean. Yeah, And itjust kind of got sucked away into the
(15:26):
ether. But I'm not even gonnalie. That's why I did the garage
sale this weekend because I was like, I know this thing is going to
be expensive, and I'm like,I'm doing that. I'm like hauling ass
on deliveries and stuff because I'm like, I'm gonna get that. I don't
care how much it costs. I'mgonna make this freaking happen for us because
(15:48):
it is I mean, honestly,I'll just send you the pictures of it.
But it is so cool anyway,So that's exciting for some cool stuff
here. And then oh, Iguess I'll talk about the garage a little.
Yeah. So I had my wholelittle you know, Sailor Moon set
up and everything there, and thisis the second year I've done it like
(16:10):
that, and both times it kindof goes the same way because I have
my other you know, miscellaneous itemsout and people come over because of the
Sailor Moon stuff, and like Ieven I put my old TV out and
I rut screen the show all day, like I just haven't playing in the
background for people to walk up orwhatever. And it all the thing is
(16:33):
like no one ever buys the SailorMoon videos because at a garage sale,
everyone wants something for like a dollar, and I'm not selling you a collectible
item for a dollar just because youcan't research the voe like the value,
you know what I mean. Butanyway, the thing is though they bring
people over and then it always inevitablystarts these like great conversations. Oh.
I used to watch that show withmy kids in nineteen ninety six. I
(16:53):
haven't seen that for twenty years.Oh my god, you know what I
mean, Kids who I've never heardof it before discovering it when they walk
by and stuff, and then theybuy other things, you know, which
is great. But I just lovedthat and it kind of highlighted something for
me, which is a big reasonwhy I did this show. But I've
(17:14):
noticed over the years, anytime I'veleaned into Sailor Moon, it's always brought
me like positivity in really random ways. Yeah, and it always just kind
of elevates my life. But Idon't really know why that is, like,
but it's just there's something about itthat kind of like for a lot
(17:36):
of people, it almost disarms them, And I think it's something that is
whatever version you prefer I don't knowa lot of people that just openly are
like it's trash and it's awful, like it's sort of a universally beloved thing
for people who do know of it. I don't know, but it just
(17:56):
it brought a lot of positivity andI got to talk with some other cool
people. Like a lady came upto me who was similar in my age.
She's a kid, and you know, the kid was obsessed with the
toys and stuff. But we weretalking about the show and other things,
and I told her how we dothe podcast, and we just get into
(18:18):
this conversation about how like people areso hard on themselves about the most menial
things, and that's why. Idon't know. It was like somehow Sailor
Moon led into this whole other conversation, and then we were talking about how
you don't actually have to fold herlaundry. We just think you have to
fold it anyway. So it devolvedinto this weird thing where but at the
end of it, she's like,I feel like I was supposed to come
(18:38):
here and talk to you today becauseI feel so much better about all of
these like random little things that cameup all because she saw the Sailor Moon
thing, and it brought them over, you know what I mean. So
little moments like that tend to happento me a lot with Sailor Moon,
and I had a nice one thisweek. And I made enough from the
(19:02):
garage sale to put a big dentinto that thing I'm trying to get for
everybody here. So I'm hopeful tooabout that. Yeah, and I hope
we got a few new listeners too. You know, people seemed excited that
this is going on. I thinkthat's all I have for my week this
(19:22):
week. Do you have anything else? At the beginning of the show,
No, I think I'm press oneverything. Okay, there was something else
I was going to tell you aboutMartha and Hank. I'll tell you about
them next week. Okay, theylive in my backyard anyway. Today on
Sailor Moon, I find out newsabout Andrew that sends me into the depths
(19:44):
of despair, but not for long. Zoy Sites monsters are back and they're
after the Rainbow crystals. Can theSailor Scouts to vanquish the evil forces of
the Negaverse? Stay right there andfind out. The episode this week is
too many girlfriends? What is theJapanese title Total Chaos, Messy Love Rectangle.
(20:10):
Why is it a rectangles? Makotoosakik I've never heard anything but triangle.
I didn't even think that's so funnyto me. M And I just
like the word MESSI being in atitle, I mean, too many girlfriends
is fine. I like the Japanesetitle better here. Yeah, because it
(20:33):
got an audibum reaction. We're alsobecause of this episode, we're starting a
new tape officially. So this isthe one called Green Eyed Monsters, And
this is the first VHS tape thatfeatures, at least in the adv release,
that features any kind of villain onthe cover. Do you know wish
one I'm talking about. No,So the background is like a dark green
(20:56):
and they have art of Zoisite onthe front of this one. Yeah,
and Zoisite is actually the only generalto be featured on the cover of any
of the tapes or DVDs. Theonly other villain we see is Queen Beryl.
You know, she's obviously at theend. So I just thought that
(21:18):
was kind of interesting. And I'mgoing to insert this later, but it's
also available on the DVD introducing SailorVenus, which is Volume five of the
North American DVD release. One thingthough, because you know, I was
working really hard on that website, putting like all the details on each individual
video and DVD onto it. Andsomething I noticed when I was doing that,
(21:41):
because I was typing out the descriptions, is when they switched over to
the DVD release because it was fewervolumes, they took on a lot of
the ones where it would like skipthe VHS on the back, they would
use the skipped VHS title as likethe lead into the description for the DVD
(22:03):
itself, and I just thought thatwas really cute for some reason. I
don't know why. In my headas a creative person, I imagine the
same team worked on both, andthey probably put a lot of effort in
onto the VHS volumes, like artisticallythat we're being dropped, so it was
sort of their way of like carryingsome of it through, like a little
(22:26):
nod to the work they put inbefore. I don't know, that's just
me guessing, though. How doyou what was the like how did you
first experience this episode? Do youremember? Yeah? It was another one
would have been later on, likewhen I was like watching stuff on a
computer, and whatever. Okay,I think a lot is a lot of
Season one, likes a lot ofthe show like that for you in general,
(22:49):
not a lot more I mean moreso like the earlier seasons because I
had been experienced a lot of ituntil I went back. Besides, you
know, stuff that was on TVor stuff that I owned. I want
to say I might be wrong, but I want to say you at least
got to see some of S orsuper S on TV. Am I right,
(23:11):
yeah, I'll go at it.Okay, that gives me a better
reference. So for me, thiswas one that I kind of have a
weird story about. I managed tosomehow see most of season one, most
of season two, all of seasonthree, all of season four without ever
meeting like without ever seeing this tape. I don't know how. And so
(23:33):
I was talking to one of myfriends about the show at one point and
she mentioned Rita, who we meetthis week, and I was like,
yeah, yeah, yeah, wellyou know the other there's another name for
her. But I was like, who is Rita? And then it was
this whole thing where and I waslike, wait a second, this character
has a girlfriend and her name's Ritaand she was a monster. What and
(23:53):
it turned into this whole deal. And I remember I had to like track
this VHS down at a Blockbuster, and that's the first time I ended up
seeing it was from lacing it.But it was a whole thing because I
had never met this character before andit's and this tape also has, in
my opinion, one of the bestepisodes of the show on it, which
(24:15):
we'll get too later. So whenI did discover it, I was like,
oh, I'm kind of obsessed withthese four episodes. But anyway,
so yeah, I have a littlea little bit of a fun connection to
this one already. What is thevery first thing we see in this episode
(24:36):
the sky switching from like normal torainy, after there's a radio voice off
screen saying, with the chance ofrain is only ten percent, and then
Maccolto is running without an umbrella andcomplaining about it. Tiny holl folks out
there. It's Wally the weather Man. I always get it right, funny
(24:59):
and cleared people. It's gonna he'sJess great. I'm gonna be totally so
that stupid weatherman never gets it right. Yeah, And they call him Wally
the Weatherman in the English one,and he's like, I always get it
right, and then they make alittle joke he never gets it right,
(25:19):
because that was like a big Idon't know, I remember jokes like that
being made a lot on TV inthe nineties about how like weather people are
always wrong. And I made alittle note that this was another example of
like, it's a very small detail, but it's that offscreen world building thing
that they do sometimes where we neversee him, but at least in the
(25:41):
English, now we know Wally theWeatherman exists and he's never right, but
he says he's always right, soit's like, okay, cool, And
we get to see this moment withLida or Makodo in the rain where she
kind of falls down and has thosegiant eyes. That's become kind of like
a GIF or a jiff moment.Yeah, which brings me to the animator
(26:03):
because this is another episode. Ihad a hard time placing this one.
And let me guess first, andI'm going to go into forms of level
because I can't remember anyone his name. I'm gonna say this was like not
the top queen but the one rightbelow her. Am I right? And
(26:26):
I don't know, I wouldn't saythat it was um We've talked about him
a lot on this season because heonly worked on season one. U Kyoshi
Matsumoto he did besides this episode,he did Mars's debut, and he does
the last episode he did. He'dloved the last two episodes he did the
season one We're thirty six and fortytwo. But he's not the worst one,
(26:48):
though, is he? No,that's not ondo oh ando, I
can't, I don't want. Ican't remember his name, so he's stwhere
in the middle, right would Yeah, he's fine because there were The thing
that I noted about this is thatsome of the goofy moments in it I
really liked, and then some ofthem were like just a tad too crazy
for my taste. Yeah, likeregarding the style of Sailor Moon. But
(27:14):
it though like too much would goaway very quickly. Yeah, And I
thought overall, there were some reallycool choices made during this one. Say
the animator's name one more time,Kyoshi Matsumoto, Okay, who does lead
a run into here in the rain? Yeah? Or Andrew in the English?
(27:34):
And a note I made here isLeada's face is extremely expressive, Like
they cut to all these different expressions, and there's one where she kind of
has her mouth open and one likefang tooth, you know what I mean?
Yeah, and I thought both therange in the animation here and the
range in Susan's performance was fantastic. Why don't you watch were your Dolly?
(28:02):
Sorry? Leda? Sorry isn't goodenough? Funny? That sounds like Andrew,
I'm so sorry, Andrew. Here, let me help you. Don't
be sorry, Lada. It wasmy fault. I missed you, Leda.
I haven't seen you at the arcadelately. I'm on my way over
there right now. If you'd liketo come with me, I'd really like
(28:25):
it if you would. What beautifulEisy. I can give you free tokens
too. Oh wow, he reallylikes earth to Leda. Okay here,
let me help you. I really, I don't know. I just thought
this moment was really fun. Doesthis stick out to you in any way?
Yeah? It's I mean, it'sa it's a nice little I like
(28:47):
every moment in sailor Moon where there'ssome kind of romantic interaction. Then there's
that one of the memorable jazz tracksthat plays behind it, and then there's
um either a flower background or itends up turning into like a watercolor still
frame. That's that's that's more inthe later part of the show. Yeah,
(29:12):
I know what you mean, andI think what you're referring to here
because I was just it's like,um, I think they use They tend
to do more of that white flashbackground for that here. Yeah, like
we talked about before, and thenyeah, later it goes very watercolor.
It's kind of like it'll fade intoa still moment, right, and then
(29:32):
they usually throw some rose petals orsomething across the screen. I love moments
like that too. And as youjust said, Sailor Moon is also the
best of jazz. So what dowe have during this little jazz moment with
Leda in her fantasy? What's goingon here? That's another thing that's typical
(29:53):
to her character, or just thinkingthat Matoki looks like her Sumpie from her
previous school, that dump turft. So they changed it up a little okay
in the English because I thought itwas probably just that, but in this
one it was actually coming off asif she was reading Andrew as liking her,
inviting her on a date to thearcade. He mentions giving her free
(30:15):
tokens, which I thought was funny, and then in reality they just end
up walking together and start talking aboutsomething. What are they talking about here?
They're talking about I think it's thesame in English that like where he
(30:37):
lives and what his favorite foods are, or like she asked him to write
it down for her, and thenin the Japanese it's that he likes like
rice. I don't know what kindof rice, but just rice with like
rice with beef. No, it'sit's less like direct and direct, because
(30:57):
to me, that's kind of dryconversation. Honestly, Yeah, it's a
little bit more like, oh,well, they're generally talking about cooking,
and Leda is just very like enthusiasticabout how much she loves it. And
then Andrews just kind of being abig dope and he's like, I can't
go toast, which I thought waslike the funniest way to say it.
(31:18):
And I actually don't remember that muchabout Andrew's character when I am not,
like, you know, deeply entrenchedin the show, but like I haven't
paid that much attention to him either, but his how would you describe the
state of his home when we seeit, it's just like a I don't
know, a messy apartment. Yeah, and then what is his personality generally?
(31:42):
Like, he's nice and easy goingand doesn't really get bothered by very
much stuff. Would you say he'skind of like lightly goofy too. That's
probably more in the English, notreally in the Japanese. I would say,
there's like it's not intentionally funny, but there's sort of an undertone of
(32:02):
him being like a lovable He's oneof those people who like means well but
struggles to take care of himself.Does that make sense? That's how he
comes off to me. Yeah, and not in a negative way, but
in just a like, well,he's on his own in this apartment.
He's probably we don't know what's hisage. I think he's like around the
(32:22):
same age as Mamaru. So he'syoung then, and let's be real,
all of us at a very youngage, or unless you're extremely blessed with
cleaning abilities, struggle with that atsome point or another, you know.
So, I don't know. Ithink he's just supposed to be like a
(32:43):
messy bachelor, but he comes offa little more heightened to me. That
just might be my read on him. So they talk about this cooking and
something else I notice, which isprobably should have been obvious. But whatever.
A lot of Lida's or Sailor Jupiter'sepisodes where they do character building with
(33:04):
her also involve rain or storms.Do you notice that? Yeah? And
it's it's not even like really thatrelevant to the plot. Usually they're just
kind of there, which I like, I think that's a cool detail.
Had you noticed that before? Notrelated until now? I guess yeah.
(33:28):
I felt like when I wrote thatdown, I was like, oh,
this should be so obvious, becausedo you know the planet Jupiter as storms
and then her powers and everything. But I guess it's just something I didn't
think about. I don't know.I know I've already named the English name.
But who was our character of theweek? Raka Rica or Rita Blake
(33:49):
in the English version? Does shehave a Japanese last name? Ye Anishimura?
I guess Blake. They took theend of the sound from break or
whatever. I don't know anyway,So who is she Matulki's girlfriend? And
what is her like? How wouldyou describe her? She's not sure looking
(34:15):
for her age. She comes offas like, well, obviously she's really
intelligent because she wants to go toAfrica to study our life was created on
Earth and science of human developments andall that stuff. They label her a
research student at the University for Biology. They mentioned that in the Japanese at
(34:40):
all. Yeah, it's the samething, okay, It just her character
lightly reminds me of the human likeLudo, like her little backstory because because
it's not really ever shown in theshow, but if you read about her,
it's like she's I think she's shea doctor actually, or she's like
(35:00):
on the way to become a doctoror something. I don't know. She's
very into higher education, but shekind of reminds me of her a little
bit. And what is Zoice sites? Oh wait, this is after that?
So we meet Rita. There youare, Rita. I was just
thinking about you. You're too goodto me. You know, a girl
could get awfully spoiled around you. Then you got the flowers I sent you.
(35:23):
They're beautiful. Guess what I gotus reservations tonight at that Italian place
you like? Oh, Andrew,I'm sorry I won't be able to go.
Why not? They're not making youwork overtime again, are they?
No? I've been promoted you haveRita. That's terrific. You got to
go to Africa with doctor Bennett likeyou've always wanted. He's the best unlucky.
(35:51):
But it's two years. Hey,love birds, Daria, You've got
to quit sneaking up like that.Oh look at the time, I've got
to go. I'll give you acall when I get home, Okay,
Andrew by Darien. Why is shesignificant in this episode besides just being like
(36:12):
a rainbow crystal holder. Well,I mean she does. I don't know,
it's probably not what you were goingto say, but she is like
one of the only side characters thatdoesn't come very much that actually has another
episode dedicated to her in a secondtime. I wasn't going to say that,
but that is true. She is. But I was sort of thinking
(36:35):
that she kind of serves as acatalyst to give us more of this child
like romance with the girls that highlightstheir age more and the whole thing where
it's like without them having a rivalto react to, then they couldn't tell
that story. Yeah, no,so she kind of fills that missing role
(36:55):
in a good way to where theybring her back later and I think they
I think that it's like a differentdynamic when she comes back later for sure.
When we cut over to the negaverse, what's going on home in Crystal,
It's time to retrieve another rainbow Crystalshow us the next target, reatly,
(37:24):
the research student from the School ofBiology. Too bad, we have
to destroy such a beauty. Howcan you say that of a human malachite?
You told me I was the ultimateexample of perfect beauty. Sh don't
be mad, Queen Beryl will seeyour anger as we mose, so I
sang, go away. You knowthere's no one more important to me in
(37:45):
all the Negaverse. I'm so lucky. Now it's time to collect what's rightfully
ours. Zooside comes outre looking atwho the blue crystal is in and then
that's actually one of my favorite likemoments in season one. That's wrong nice
enough of he Kinsite says how beautiful, but what she is? And then
(38:09):
Zoocyte says that, like all youthink that she's more attractive than me,
And then Kwin's immediately materializes a pinkrose and gives it to Zoocyte and says
that you're you know, nobody matcheshow beauty, how beautiful you are,
and they like embraced a little bit, and that's the scene. Yeah,
(38:30):
it's a really interesting moment that Idon't It's something that like, as a
kid, it was the first timeI realized they were together because I just
hadn't been picking up on it,you know, up until that point.
And so I was kind of like, this episode gave me a lot of
like, oh moments, and thatwas one of them. And I love
(38:54):
the flower thing. I thought thatwas so cool. It highlights Zoeysite's character
lot which is steeped in jealousy,I think, and insecurity, and I
think Zoisite speaks to the part ofa lot of us that just wants to
be validated sometimes. Yeah, no, And I think a lot of the
(39:15):
time the generals are or the villainsare meant to do that where they take
sort of a human quality that weall sort of struggle with and then amplify
that, like, oh, ifit really gets out of control, it
can kind of look like this, right. And jealousy is a very it's
I think since at some point inevery single human's life we're jealous of someone
(39:37):
for something, just period, like, and whether it's big or small,
we all have felt it in someway. Maybe that's why we connect to
her easily. I don't know. After this scene with them, we see
Darien and Andrew having kind of likethis guy chat, which we don't get
much of after the first season, maybe a little in the second season.
(39:59):
What are they talking about here?So what you're so down about, Andrew?
Rita's gonna leave for Africa. Thatbug research project with doctor Bennett came
through today, Bummer. I guessthat means you guys are gonna have to
break up. We could still havea long distance relationship, or maybe y'all
go to Africa and study entomology too. But you hate bugs. I think
(40:20):
I could learn to like them forher. I thought that you wanted to
become a surgeon. Well not ifit means giving up Rita. You know,
I've never known anybody like her. She's great, won't work long distance.
Haven't you ever been totally gone onsomeone me? Come on? Get
real? Yeah? Well you meetthis person who's just totally special, and
(40:42):
everything clicks and you know this isforever forever. You've got to be getting
me. I can barely stay interestedfor five minutes. No way. Yeah.
What about Serena's friend Ray? Nah? I know she's got some silly
schoolgirl crush on me, but we'rejust pals nothing more. She told me
you've been going to karate together.Beat him on three times. But you're
right about the age thing. Ithink if Serena and her friends kind of
(41:04):
like little sisters waital He finds outSerena and Lida both have the most mongous
crushes on. They're talking about Racaand what she is deciding on about going
to Africa or just staying here becauseshe is like so in love with with
(41:28):
Matoki. And then Matoki says thathe ran into Makoto, and then Makoto
wants to come over again with her. No, I don't know if we
got to the part yet where likeMakoto is on their round. We didn't
get to the part where Makoto Nasagiwere talking. But no, that's next,
I think, yeah, and thenMatoki says he really he like reminds
(41:49):
Mamaru that they're all just middle schoolgirls, and then he has a little
he like from he remembers to himselfthat Ray is only a middle school and
then and then, uh, that'spretty much it all. Then, but
Tookey says that people he views themall as like little sisters, not really
as romantic interests. How what Ineed to know? Do we know what
Momoor's age is here? He's eitherlike a freshman or sophomore in college.
(42:14):
Okay, I'm gonna say something controversialyet, brave. I don't condone that
type of relationship. But I didgrow up in an era where I was
watching a lot of that happened aroundme with friends, do you know what
I mean? So, I that'sthe reason why having it in a show
like this, I don't. Ithink a lot of people if they don't
(42:35):
know the show and they like that'sa detail they hear, they automatically want
to jump on the like you know, oh my god, like that whole
thing, and like have a reactiveanswer to it. To me, it
highlights something that was very common atthe time, something that straight up probably
should be addressed, do you knowwhat I mean, Like in culture at
(42:58):
some point, whether we do ornot, I don't know. That's kind
of like two above my pay grade. But it's just it doesn't I think
they did a good job of nothaving it come off predatory. Yeah,
Sailor Moon, and it could have, like it really could have. It
makes I think it makes it easierthat they're like young college age and it's
(43:22):
not like they're thirty or old,you know what I mean, Because like
sometimes I look at Darien and I'mlike, are you forty or like eighteen?
Like I can't tell. So itdoes kind of help a little.
But no, their discussion in theother one, they didn't touch on it
at all, I think because theydidn't want to highlight that, right,
(43:43):
and it was more of them talkingabout how Andrew would be willing to give
up his dreams, of which Ican't remember what they are, and then
he would do that for her,and then Darien's like, you can't give
up your dreams for this lady. And then something happens in andrew Rings of
Ray, and that's when we seeDarien being like all funny about it,
(44:05):
and I think in the Japanese whenhe's remembering Ray's age, they have him
saying in his mind, oh waittill Andrew finds out that Serena and Leda
have huge crushes on it. Yeah. So yeah, that was a scene
that I mean, it depends onwhat your audience is. I don't think
I would have highlighted it either toanother audience, because the thought behind that
(44:27):
being we don't want them to watchthis and then be like, oh yeah,
let me at fourteen. I thinkit's cool to pursue college boys,
you know what I mean? Yeah, I mean if if Sailor Moon had
been on, if the first seasonand second season had been made when Cartoon
Network was already existed, I thinkthey probably would have it. Yeah.
(44:50):
I think they probably would have leftthat same Oh you cut out? Are
you still there? Yeah? Okay, Yeah, I think so too.
And I think that we see someof that we'll get into more later with
s and supers and as much asdub and even some of the like choices
they do change with it, Ikind of like some of them. I
(45:12):
don't think that it would have workedgoing further into the series because the series
just kind of gets more and moremature as we go, right, So
it is it sort of happened atthe right time when the licensing switched over
if you ask me anyway back tothis episode, so we have this guy
talk with Andrew and Darien that's kindof different in whichever version you're watching,
(45:37):
and what happens after that. Oh, I think this is where we cut
to we know, we go toLeda barging into Andrew's place after that somehow.
Oh yeah, the little clip whereshe goes in there when he's not
home, and then sere's the photoof them and well in the English one,
it was when they went there togetherand it was like a huge mess
(45:59):
and and she starts cleaning everything andI put because they might have put this
out of order, I don't know. But she had this tie around her
forehead with some Japanese text on itfor cleaning. Do you know what that
is? Yeah? The headband theheadbands does kami kase, which I know
what that means about having to lookit up. It's Japanese for whirlwind.
(46:21):
Is that like a thing like whenyou clean you tie your hair up or
something like that. I don't think. I don't know if it's a thing
over there. I think that's justlike a gag thing they did is like
to herself as a whirlwind cleaning uphis stuff. Because sometimes I watch the
show and I like use it asa reference point for culture I'm not part
(46:42):
of, you know, and likebecause specifically I'm thinking about I know you've
seen Spirited Away, Yeah, StudioGhibli Ghibli yeah, you guys choose.
But there's that scene where they're doingthe cleaning in it and they kind of
like have to tie their clothing acertain way, and then it's like I
remember her running and pushing the thingacross the floor and think and I remember
(47:05):
watching that and thinking like, ohmy gosh, this is how you have
to clean a floor like that that'smade out of that kind of wood and
blah blah blah. Anyway, Uh, I was just curious if that was
like a real significant thing, butit sounds like it was just a joke,
right, I think, so,yeah, Okay, who is it,
Hey, Andrew, it's Lida readyto cook up a storm? Hold
(47:30):
on, be right there. Iwas just on my way to Mark.
Not so fast. Let's see whatyou need. Sorry, the place is
kind of a mess. People alwayssay that when company comes over, and
it's never true, except in thiscase. Yeah, I think there's some
(47:54):
left excellent. You get busy cleaningthat mountain of dishes. I just can't
anything. Now, let's go sowe see this like cleaning moment happened and
this is yeah, I see. Now, as you said, Leta finds
(48:15):
out about Rita here and then whathappens after that. Then it goes to
uh Makoto and Usagi at school, and Usaki just jokes that's like, oh
you you must be like you looklike someone broke your heart, and then
Mkoto gets angry right away, andthen then right after that, asked who
(48:39):
it is that she's talking about, and then she says that it's uh Matoki,
and then Musaki is all shocked anddisappointed because she is she's interested in
him too. Yeah, and thishow how is the tone of this scene?
It's pretty that's pretty comical, andsister early like, I I really
(49:00):
do. I like. I likethat scene at the end of it where
Makoto's eyes are all sparkling and saysthat, oh well, even though she
essentially says that even though he hasa girlfriend, that both of us can
still try and asking him out anyway, because you know, they don't have
anything to lose. And in theJapanese it says, there's when they are
(49:22):
shown against that background, that reallynice background of the city, it says
that there's no tomorrow for the prettysoldiers. Oh, I didn't know that
that scene you just mentioned with hereyes would be a really cool one to
see. Production art from I thinkactually this episode in general, Yeah,
(49:43):
I'm certain ones, Yeah, yeah, I'm not sure how close it was
to the Japanese. I really lovethis moment though, just for aw cute
and affable Serena and Leta are here, specifically Susan and Terry like the English
performance. Seriously, what's wrong?I've never seen you look so miserable?
(50:05):
Andrew's in luck. He's been withher for a whole year. How come
he never mentioned her to us sowe could stop moving over him? It's
not fair. Hey, I thoughtyou were over it. He was my
first cry. But I thought youwere madly in love with tuxedo mass.
(50:31):
Would you doll it down? Okay, you can't blame her. The only
guy who's got the hots for her. He's the school dweet byster Melvin,
the Severn Belle. Now, youdon't scare me like that. And there's
one thing being the suitor Scouts taughtme. It's that you never give up,
no matter how bad things may begoing. I'll get what I want
to, Yea, So well, who exactly did you have in mind?
(51:00):
And over you? We've still gota chance. His girlfriend's going away pretty
soon, so don't give up.One of us might be able to get
it, do you think so?I guess it can't hurt to try,
will stop until we find it.Whereas somebody tell me this is a really
(51:22):
bad dream, i'd be bad. There's just like these cute moments of Serena
talking to herself. And I noticedthat some of the timing and beats on
it, while they might not soundperfectly like natural for conversation, Terry delivered
it in a way where you don'tnotice it unless you're looking for it.
(51:44):
And I was, you know whatI mean? I was like, Oh,
I see why she paused there, because the mouth, even though she
should have said that, you knowwhat I mean? Yeah, And I
really had to pay attention closely tonotice that. And I thought that Susan
does a really nice job with hertransitions from angry, too hopeful, like
all, her range of emotion withLda is truly incredible as a voice actress.
(52:08):
Um, she's I don't know ifyou'll understand this reference because it's a
little specific to me, but she'ssort of my sporty spice. Okay,
okay, okay. Let me explainthat in the sense that when I was
growing up, the Spice Girls hitreally big when I was still in an
elementary school, my scary, babyposh gingius boy, and there was a
(52:38):
lot of talk about like who isyour favorite Spice Girl and you know all
of them, right, yeah,so you have Baby, Sporty, Posh,
scary, and ginger. And whenI was a kid, like most
little like blonde children, my favoritewas baby because I was like, I'm
a baby. I look like her, you know, I want to be
(52:59):
her. Maybe I wanted her shoesso bad anyway, So as an adult
though, when I was like listeningto the Spice Girls CDs, like they
put out a Greatest Hit CD orsomething when I was in early in college,
and I got it and I waslistening really listening to the vocals and
pulling apart, like who was singingeach part? With my ear? And
I was like, why is SportySpice the most incredible vocalist? And I
(53:24):
never noticed it? She gets everysolo if you listen to their songs,
every little moment that is like oneof those like oh wow, that's a
really good like riff over the chorusor whatever, it's always her and it
is, and she has one ofthe there's something about female vocals where it's
(53:44):
like if you have a sort ofraspy quality to your voice. I don't
know why, but that just likeMiley Cyrus, like any lady who anyone
who sounds like they smoke sixteen packsa day and can also sing it hits
really well. I don't know why. So and with Susan Rowman, it's
kind of like, I think maybebecause my best friends growing up favorite character
(54:07):
was Jupiter, it was kind oflike she claimed her a little bit,
so I just never you know,I was like, oh, I'm Mercury
then, but really paying attention toher performance, she's like the sporty spice
of this cast, where she hasthe longest tension, like the longest attack
lines and they're really really memorable. And then just a lot of the cast
(54:34):
is great at doing different emotions. But I'll be honest, I think she
might equal or even be like slightlybetter than Terry. What do you think?
Yeah, I mean, I thinkin terms of the original main in
her cast for the first dub,I mean I think that it's probably because
(54:58):
they were you know, obviously,Susan never got recast and Katie didn't really
get recast for the most part.I think that both of them are the
strongest in terms of the original innercast members for the for the first dub,
yeah, I would have to agree. Sorry, I thought I had
(55:21):
to turn that off. Yeah,I don't know. I think we got
a lot of strong performances. ButI'm also curious to see if by the
time we get to like the endof our where things change over, if
we'll feel differently, you know, because who knows, I might. We
might get Emily Claire Barlow in thereand a bunch of people, and I
might start changing my tune. Soafter this great moment where they end it
(55:44):
by saying we're love Scouts and weget this sort of like Sailor Scout asque
animation, but they're not transformed.Yeah, Darien shows up again, and
I noticed his voice sounds kind ofodd to me. Here I think I
see him alone head, I thoughtI smelled a rat. Andrew's not working
(56:05):
today, guys, He's busy helpinghis girlfriend pack for Africa. Face it,
he just isn't interested. God fallin a sewer or someplace. Okay,
before I get mad, I'm onlytrying to save you two from complete
and total humiliation. Believe me.It's not a pretty psych Oh why would
you care? Yeah, why meatballhead? He and Rita are really tight,
(56:28):
so you should leave him alone. How many times do I have to
tell you my name is Serena notMeatballhead? Or is your brain too small
to grasp that I know your namein the English one? I don't know.
It's like strained or overly controlled.I just I can feel there's like
something off about it. I don'tknow if you remember that or not.
(56:52):
But what He's there and kind oflike mocking Lida and Serena, and then
we have this moment where he makesLida angry and what happens, Oh you
mean like when they're both justressed outby themselves. Yeah, yeah, it's
a gag. But she chokes him, like asking him to tell her more
(57:14):
about Raca, and then she kindof faints in a way. And then
in the in the in the Japanese, the um the nickname that she was
calling mamru in that in the andthat whole scene was nasty guys, and
she's like, oh, nasty guy, are you okay? My nasty guy?
(57:37):
He was he being just a bigjerk or something like to that level.
Well, yeah, because I'm sureit's similar in English, because in
Japanese when he shows up, hesays to both of them that, oh,
um, you guys shouldn't even bothergoing in there and talking to him,
because he just thinks that you guysare like little little kids sisters to
(57:57):
him. It probably is similar tothat. I'm length on exactly what he
said there, but yeah, andthen for some reason though the choking thing,
like I remember it, but whenI watch it, I don't know
if it's the English editing. Itseems to come out of nowhere a little
really Leda, You're gonna make foolsyourselves, but we're love Scouts and we
won't give up until our mission isaccomplished. And one of us states and
(58:22):
oh, brother, I wonder ifI was this wigged out when I was
in junior high school out to me. And then at the end when she
like drops him and he faints, she's like, oop, sorry, Like
it's so weird. I just Idon't know. I find that whole moment
kind of strange. Um. Butanyway, after we see Leda choking out
(58:45):
Darien, she goes further into cretemode, and what happens she goes to
the college that Raka is studying atand then sees her leaving, and then
instead of telling Raka to go togo to Africa and not and not prioritize
(59:09):
Matoki, she says the she endsup saying the opposite and says, like
to do what you're most passionate about, and like don't let her like she
no, she says, like makeyour make your choice between your passions or
your or your love life. Ithink it was probably I mean, she
basically says she goes in with theintention of trying to break them up by
(59:34):
encouraging her to go to Africa, and then after she does her little speech
like go to Africa, don't letany man stop you, she then encourages
them like maybe it'll work out longdistance. And then she's like, oh,
I'm so bad at this romantic sabotage. Yeah stuff. And it was
kind of funny because it's one ofthose moments I remember every and every time
I watch it, I kind offeel like this. I always feel a
(59:54):
little bit gross when I know they'retrying to break up Andrew and a girl
friend, because that kind of behaviorto me just like makes my stomach turn
frankly, like, I don't knowhow else to say it, because people,
First, people put a lot ofwork into relationships. And second,
(01:00:14):
nobody knows exactly the details and theagreements made in a relationship except for the
two people in it. And weall have different sets of morals, right,
So, Like, when you goaround and you see the situation and
maybe you want somebody from a relationshipfor yourself, or maybe you think,
oh, I know so and sowhatever, like, and you want to
(01:00:36):
break them up because you don't likesomeone or whatever your reasoning is. To
me, you're just inviting like aworld of terrible karmic interaction onto yourself.
Yeah, because think about it.If it works and you do end us
say your goal is to get withthat person, and you do end up
with them, what if they findout what you did? Yeah, you
(01:00:59):
know what I mean. Do youthink they're going to care about you as
much or even you know, orlike you then have to live with that.
I don't know, like that wholeand it's something that was a trope
a lot in the past. Idon't see it as much, I don't
think anymore. I don't know.Yeah, but I'm glad that I think
in both versions. It kind oflike it starts out that way and then
(01:01:22):
pivots nicely, because if it didn'tpivot, I don't think I would like
this episode. But Leda, ofcourse she's too nice, she's too kind,
and she probably could feel I wouldimagine if her character is real,
she would sort of feel in themoment, this isn't the right thing,
and then you know, swoop inwith the encouragement. Oh sure, but
(01:01:43):
what made you want to become abiologist? Leader? Oh, Andrew was
telling me all about your trip toAfrica and it sounded meat. Yeah,
it will be if I decide togo, But I'm not sure it's worth
losing Andrew over it. I knowit's really a once in a lifetime opportunity,
but I don't want him to meetanyone else. You can't miss out
(01:02:04):
on an opportunity like this. Noway, I'd go to Africa in a
minute, especially if it meant fulfillingmy greatest dream. And who knows,
maybe you and Andrew will just pickup where you left off. I'm not
too good at this romantic sabotage stuff. We cut to Andrew's apartment, and
what's different about it? That's completelyclean. Yeah, and what does Serena
(01:02:29):
immediately see coffee cup that is notempty and then she'd like picks it up
and smells it or whatever. Yeah, they made it less creepy in the
English in the sense that she waslike, Oh, it's the coffee cup
I gave him for Christmas. Andthen she picks up and she's like,
(01:02:50):
I wonder if he thinks about mewhen he uses it to kind of explain
why she's holding it, so she'snot just like randomly smelling his coffee,
although I could tell that's what shewas doing. I thought that was kind
of key. And then we havethis cooking scene and I think this is
something that got partially cut from theEnglish, but hold on, there was
there was something that did. Maybeit's about what you were going to say,
(01:03:13):
but yeah, there is something thatgot cut out of the English.
Yeah, tell me what it is. Um Like, right before Usagi and
Mkoto actually go into his apartment,um Usagi has a fantasy about um Matoki
asking her to marry him, andthen she says that, oh, I'm
not like, I'm not emotionally readyfor that, and then when she closes
(01:03:37):
her eyes into vision, she likecloses her eyes in real life, and
then when it when it goes backto reality, she's leaning up to kiss
Koto and Makoto's like, stop beingweird. Oh yeah, that's not in
this episode at all. I didn'tthink it would be in the English one.
They I think they there's a lota little like I don't know what
(01:04:00):
she would call that ambiguous. Yeah, like it's like it's joky flirty between
girl friends. Yeah, And Ithink they do cut a lot of that
out, probably in the first twoseasons. No, I thought there was
a thing that happened where she cutsher finger. Oh that is Yeah,
it's just a little tiny thing atthe end where she's like, oh,
(01:04:23):
I cut my finger and you see, just for like a second, you
see her finger bloody. But thatwas because of the Susan was talking about
it in our interview that, youknow, the Canadian stuff was so strict
that if if there was anything likethat remotely, it had to be cut
out. That's why I wanted tohighlight it though, because I think sometimes
when people hear stuff, even likein an interview, because she was saying,
(01:04:43):
oh, if there's like a scenewith a kid riding a bicycle without
a helmet. Yeah, I thinkpeople hear that and they'd be like,
yesh or that's like exaggerating that.Literally, it was like two frames of
red color, right and you whenyou cut your finger, you bleed,
and I think children know that, you know, And it was like,
but that is how strict these lawswere. And so the fact that we
(01:05:05):
got the show at all is stillkind of blows my mind today because like,
they really had to do a lotto get this to come over here
for us, And I think themore I learn about that, the more
it makes me appreciate it even more, because I'm like, I don't think
(01:05:25):
they wanted to make most of thesechanges. No, they kind of just
had to like a period and theywhat are they going to do? Fight
the Canadian government over it? Likedo you know what I'm saying? Like,
I think sometimes we look at historyand our expectations need to be adjusted
to like the climate of the timea little. But anyway, where in
(01:05:48):
this after this coal cutout finger scene, who calls Andrew and why Riga calls
him from a phone booth in thecity says that she, at least as
of now, she decided that sheisn't going to go to Africa anymore.
And one thing I didn't mentioned beforeher Rica is another interesting voice actress situation
(01:06:13):
in both languages. In Japanese, she's voiced by Rica Fukami, who is
Venus's voice actress, and then inthe viz ridub she's voiced by Eric Amendez,
who is who later became a sailorUranus. Oh see, to any
voice actress who are listening, ifyou ever land apart, that's like smaller
(01:06:36):
on a show, go in andlike go balls out because you never know.
I'm I mean, I'm sure thathappens in a lot where I know.
I used to watch Glee, whichdid not age well by the way,
good luck if you watch it today, But there were some I remember
watching that, and there were characterson the show who would like really catch
(01:06:56):
your eye from the background, andthen the next season they were like a
main character, you know what Imean. So I'm just saying even small
parts, even small opportunities, canturn into some like big stuff. You
know. So Rica cancels going toAfrica, and Andrew wants to go find
her because she's out in the rainor whatever, and he leaves, leaving
(01:07:21):
the two girls in his apartment aloneand he's gone for a while. What
happens after he's been gone? TheyOh, no, the moon Stick starts
reacting and then Luna tells both themthe transform, and then they do,
and then it cuts to a great, a great little scene which is probably
(01:07:43):
my entire scene, favorite scene inthe whole episode, where zoa Site is
standing in front of Raka and Matokiand they're surrounded by fire and yes,
yeah that's a It's this really coolpan like really brief but cool pan shot
of Zoasite that's drawn really well, and then Matoki just fries punching Zooste and
(01:08:11):
then Zoosite easily uses a blast toknock him away and then obviously makes break
a transform into the monster and thenshe Raka is containing the blue rainbow crystal.
H This is one of my favoritebattle scenes from this arc. Yeah,
(01:08:35):
maybe from season one because, likeyou were saying, the when we
cut to Zoysite with the fire andeverything, that is I think one of
the coolest just scenes for Zoysite periodrelation wise, and there that I think
they recognize how cool that was becauseit's used in the like today on Sailor
Moon, like that you know howthey do the intro. They pulled from
(01:08:57):
that right away. They wanted peopleto see that, and I thought,
like, we'll kind of dissect thebattle a little bit here. But one
of the reasons I like it somuch is the monster had several different techniques
that were utilized and they made sensefor her character. Yeah, and the
scouts who participated, like everything theydid had a purpose. So let's kind
(01:09:23):
of go through what happens here.We see this moment with zoysite aunt Andrew
trying to defend Brita from Zoisite byhimself, and of course he don't.
He can't because you know, outof the way. Whimp, it's your
girlfriend on after not you now move, don't say I didn't warn you.
(01:09:57):
Now where Oyster? What do youwant? Rita? We're on the same
side. You just don't remember, but soon enough you will. You'll see
what's happening. Why are you afterme? Because you've got something I need?
The rainbow crystal. Oh did youworried? As a Nega mons careful
(01:10:34):
sailors, She's dangerous and unpredictable andshe gets the blue crystal. Like you
were saying, can you describe themonster that Rita turns into yeah, it's
um, it's a woman obviously thathas h it's They kind of look similar
(01:10:56):
to an alien. They have anentirely green, almost in the green body
and a completely barren head besides atuft of like white blonde and then pink
hair at the bottom, and thenof one big monocle eyeglass, and then
(01:11:18):
all the techniques that we see themuse are related to science and you know,
cells and stuff like that. Yeah, Tuxedo Mask shows up after we
get to see this monster, andhe's there to go after the crystals,
so he kind of has his thinggoing on with Zoisite. We see a
(01:11:41):
brief moment of Jupiter and Moon kindof talking about him, and I think,
I don't know if it's the same, but Jupiter saying, I thought
you were in love with Andrew. Now you like Tuxedo Mask. You can't
you can't go after everyone, right, So that little thing happens, and
then we could get to this themonster's first attack, which in the English
they call it leeches, these littlelike things that kind of glob onto their
(01:12:06):
sailor Moon's legs. Leeches. Sheneeds to brush up on her biology,
and she says they're gonna just totallysuck her dry and destroy her. Is
that what they call them in theJapanese? They're not really called anything,
(01:12:29):
but I mean it's clear. It'sclear that it's some kind of amba type
of thing. And then the monstersays, in a scientific way, roasts
Usagi, saying that she only isa like a she only has one cell
in her brain, and then Lunahas to explain what that means. I
kind of like that. Okay, that's kind of funny. Um, I
(01:12:53):
think I think it wasn't supposed tobe leeches. I think it was supposed
to literally be like like, Idon't know, answer seals something. Yeah,
it just looked like a blob ofscience. Um how did those get
taken care of? I'm gonna blastthis broad all the way back to the
Negro verse, Gredo, this willbe sucked up my power. Blast She's
(01:13:33):
got your power. If I zapher again, it'll make her even stronger.
How does that happen? I don'tJupiter? It was so weird.
Jupiter uses her thunder crash and itlike zaps those way. But then what
happens after that? Then the monstergets out of a big glass beaker and
pretty much absorbs the attack inside thebeaker and then sends it back to them,
(01:13:55):
and then they offer they dodge, but there's still a bunch of lightning
in the beaker and then they don'tknow how they're gonna get past that that
and they're kind of staying, well, if I do my attack again,
she's just going to absorb it.Yeah, And who shows up after that?
Mercury and Mars And what happens.First Mercury uses the bubble spray attack
(01:14:17):
and then Ray uses the fire soultto destroy the beaker, and then they're
they're all surrounding break up, andthen that's when Usaki uses the healing escalation
HM. And I think that sometimesif you're not paying attention, the bubbles
(01:14:38):
do kind of come off, likewhat was the point of that? But
in this situation, it's like bythrowing the fog in first, the monster
didn't know what was going on,couldn't see them, and that opens up
the opportunity to destroy her weapon, which was preventing them from week you know,
doing anything. And it's just likea really a smart tactical move there.
(01:14:59):
And try if I think it's stupid, I'll tell you because I'm very
specific about her bubbles, but Ireally like the use of them here.
I thought I was expecting Mars tojust hit her with fire. So I
also liked that she got rid ofthe weapon. I thought that was a
smarter move than just straight damage. And then we get our moon healing activation.
Zoysite tricks Tuxedo and ends up gettingthe crystal. Here, you're not
(01:15:24):
getting that crystal. You win thistime. I'm no match for the Great
Tuxedo Mask, so Love, Ican't believe you felt, But that's the
Great Tuxedo mask done in by azone. Next time we meet, I'll
be ready for you, Zoysite Andrew. And then we see what I thought
(01:15:46):
was like. I would say itwas cool but also kind of still so
I would have like medium feelings aboutit when she leaves with the Terry Blossoms,
do you know what I mean?Yeah, like it could have been
cool, but it was still coolbecause I always like that. So and
after this drama and everything, wecut over to the conclusion of Rica her
(01:16:13):
story or Rita's story. What's goingon here? They're in the airport together,
her in Matoki, and then they'rejust saying that um, you know,
typical couple stuff when one of somebodyis going on a trip for a
long time. Um, you know, I'll I'll write you immediately and um,
(01:16:34):
I'll talk to you soon. Andthen Rica goes down an escalator to
catch the flight because you're here atbeing announced over the intercom. And then
the episode ends with Usagi and Makotolike running towards Matoki saying that oh like
(01:16:55):
jokingly saying that they can still havea chance, and that's it. It
ends on a still frame of aToki with a big cartoonish like to your
sweat drop, like watching both ofthem a frolic around in the airport.
It goes yeah, it goes kindof goofy with the animation like last second
again, And at this point inthe English it kind of comes off ambiguous
(01:17:20):
to me, like with Andrew andRita, like will she come back?
Will they stay together? We don'treally know, but we're hoping for the
best. Rita flight four zero twoto better will be Africa. Well,
(01:17:42):
I guess you'd better go. It'slast call. I know I'll miss you
so much. I'll miss you toolight Each day, all passengers on flight
four zero two should now be atthe gate. This is Andrew will be
in my heart you and mine.Wow, that's the most romantic thing I've
(01:18:08):
ever seen. Yep, and nowthat it's over, we should invite him
out for a milkshake. You're stillI don't know what I can flirt here
just getting a date with Taxedo massline. Is that kind of how they
you feel like they left it?I think, well, I think in
(01:18:30):
Japanese it's pretty cemented that they're gonnastay together. Yeah, okay, yeah,
I think they were a little lessdirect about it. But that's yeah,
that's the end of the episode.M and then we get the Sailor
says, for Nda, it wasreally a blow finding out Andrew had a
girlfriend. Life's full of blows, but the trick is knowing how to get
(01:18:51):
over them. Yet it really helpedtalking to my friends, but the best
help can come from counselors or believeit or not, your parents. Talking
all helps me. But lots ofkids get depressed and climb up. They
feel like there's no one who canpossibly understand them. If you're feeling that
way, please reach out for help, don't try to solve it alone.
(01:19:12):
Sailor Moon says, which is aboutgetting over life's little setbacks. And they
use the example of finding out aguy you like has a girlfriend, and
when stuff happens it gets you down, you should talk it out, don't
clam up, ask for a counselorif you need help, talk to your
parents. But they kind of arejust emphasizing, like, if you're feeling
(01:19:34):
depressed, ask for help, talkabout it, that kind of thing.
So I think let's let's talk aboutthat a little in the context of this
show. For this rating. Ithink that's a pretty good Sailor says,
actually, how do you feel?Yeah? I agree. I think it's
a digestible message that kids could probablyget. And it's something that I work
(01:20:00):
on a lot with teaching, whereevery now and then you'll get someone who
comes in and every little like wrongnote, every little oh, the finger
slightly hits the thing wrong, it'slike I have to start over. Oh,
and like all of that is somuch extraneous energy. You don't really
have to do that because it you'dmade like the small in terms of mistakes,
(01:20:25):
I can't think of a smaller mistakethan hitting a wrong note in a
music class, you know what Imean, Like, it's it's going to
happen. You can't avoid it.So it's just one of those things where
the sooner you can learn how tolet that stuff kind of just pass over
you, you can you acknowledge themistake, you see, what do I
learn from it? And then youjust learn it and let it go,
(01:20:45):
like you know, there's no reasonto sit there and kind of like rehash
at a billion times. And inmy experience, if you're not learning something,
the world has a funny way oflike shoving the message in your face
stronger and stronger until finally get it. You know, Yeah, I don't
know. Let's talk about that alittle. Let's just expand on that if
(01:21:06):
you can, well, I guessyeah, just in a context in general,
it's something that you get to dealwith. You don't really let it
bother you as much when you getolder, but it's more of a problem
and it'll affect you more when you'rea kid and a teenager. I guess
(01:21:27):
that. I mean my experience isit's just something that you naturally become less
bothered by as you get older, and you just naturally learn how to help
with things like that on your own. Are you referencing context of the show,
like maybe a romantic rejection or something. Yeah, okay, yeah,
going well, I was pretty muchdone. Okay, No, I agree.
(01:21:50):
I think dealing with romantic rejection ingeneral gets a lot easier the older
you get. Um. I thinkwhen you're young, there's something about being
young where we buy into this weirdidea that like, even though we're on
a planet with billions of people, somehow I'm the one most disgusting thing,
(01:22:13):
and you know what I mean,Like, somehow I'm the unleveled one,
like girl, No, there areso many people out there going through so
many unique, both great and terriblethings that like, when it comes to
that, it's just kind of aboutfinding like people who click, and if
someone doesn't click with you, youreally get to a place where you're like
(01:22:33):
it is not personal at all.The less personal it is when something doesn't
work out, the better because whowants to spend all that time and energy,
like you know, thinking about anX or whatever and like wasting like
who needs all that? So yeah, I agree with you. I think
the older it gets, the easierall of that kind of stuff becomes.
(01:22:56):
And it kind of ties into whatI was talking about at the beginning of
the show about laundry and just littletasks around the house. If you're someone
who struggles with something called executive dysfunction, which is like the process where starting
the task is the hardest thing slash, that is why your home sometimes ends
up messy, disorganized, etc.It kind of comes back to this idea
(01:23:23):
of like, you can't beat yourselfup for that, because that just compounds
the problem. Yeah, you're notgoing to take any steps forward while you're
sitting there telling yourself you're lazy, you're stupid, you're not doing enough whatever.
That's a waste of your time. The answer is to like or the
trick anyway. One of the tricksI use is it's like I've discovered I
(01:23:44):
can clean anything for ten minutes.I have ten minutes of you know what
I mean, Like I can doten minutes. So I'll send a timer
for ten minutes, and I tellmyself I can stop when the timer goes
off, and sometimes I do,and then a lot of the time I
just keep going because I'm like, well, I'm already doing it, you
know YEA little hacks like that area good way to kind of remove some
(01:24:05):
of what I would consider like mentalclutter. Yeah, you know, like
beating yourself up for anything is kindof mental clutter. So I don't know.
I hope that helps. Do youhave any tools for dealing with things
you just don't want to do,or that you know you maybe want to
do but you can't get started on. Oh not really. I just i'd
(01:24:30):
kind of just go ahead and makemyself do it, honestly. Now,
Yeah, did it take time todevelop that muscle? Yeah, I would.
I would think. So it's anotherthing that just naturally happens as you
get older, I guess true.Yeah, Yeah, I think so,
because things just in general become less, Things just bother you less as you
get older. Yeah, and youkind of learn what to put your energy
(01:24:54):
into and what's not really worth it, you know. So yeah, I
I think that's a good wrap upon the Sailor says, what are you
some final thoughts on this episode beforewe read it? I like it.
It's one of the standouts from thefirst season for me for sure. Yeah,
(01:25:17):
this was one of like I saidbefore, it was sort of a
randomly lost episode for me for somereason. So when I did finally see
it, I also was kind oflike, oh, I missed something kind
of good. Yeah, and Inever got to see this one on TV,
but I did get to see itfrom Blockbuster on videos, so you
know, you do what you can, and I saw it. That's the
(01:25:38):
other thing, is I The firsttime I watched this show, it was
grossly out of order because it wasn'tavailable in order. I mean, now
you can just watch it from startto finish. So yeah, I think
that's it. M how many moreepisodes do we have for the Rainbow Crystals?
(01:26:00):
That's just like six, maybe fivesomething like that. No, that's
too many because we're on Blue already, right, although I guess do consider
it part of the Rainbow Crystal arcafter the first initial like, yeah,
I guess it is, because there'smore to it, right, Yeah,
yeah, maybe maybe you're right, maybe there are six more. I think
(01:26:23):
we see our last Rainbow Crystal targetafter the two episodes from now, does
that sound right? Yeah? Okay, so I mean we're getting there,
all right. I'll see you nextweek. Okay, Right, that's it
(01:26:44):
for this week's episode of Moonstar,A Sailor Moon Podcast. Chris and I
somehow still forgot to give our ratingfor this one, even though I said,
hey, before we rate it.I don't know how we do that,
but fortunately with the power of editing, I get to tell you now.
So Chris gave this week's episode athree point five and I gave or
(01:27:04):
give this week's episode four out offive stars. I can't really speak for
Chris on the matter, but forme, I really just enjoyed this episode
a lot. I think it's verystrong all around. You guys heard my
sort of unique experience to finding it. That might color my judgment here,
I'm not really sure. But otherthan that, I think we get a
(01:27:26):
lot of important character development with Lidafor Super Jupiter. I think the deep
dub specifically had a lot of standoutvoice acting moments, as I tried to
highlight by including them in the episodethis week when we would talk about it,
and I thought the battle overall,I thought the battle overall was done
pretty great considering it's just a regularquote Monster of the week and usually those
(01:27:53):
can go either way. Yeah, four stars for me. Sound off wherever
