first of all, if you, if I know you listen
to every second of our show intently, Jeff, I'm well
aware of this. I'm exactly right. So you wouldn't have
missed a couple of days ago exactly so you would
not have missed when I said, I think the Broncos

might have a trade for the von Vele because it
looks like he's in a logjam of different guys at
wide out. I suggested maybe they could get a fifth
Vic and Mose laughed at me, And they got a
fourth and a second.

Vick laughed. I just made fun of what the return
would be. That's all.

Did that surprise you though? Fourth and a seventh for
Devon Valley?
Speaker 5 (02:07):
It's an excellent deal, It certainly is.

I mean, you look at what the the Chiefs are
getting for sky Moore a second round pick they only
got they only got one pick, a sixth rounder. So
the Broncos have have done better. I mean that's you
almost can you know. I've had gms tell me through
the years. If you if you get the value of
the of the pick where the guy was selected or better,

you're doing pretty well. And Malee was a seventh round pick, uh,
and the Broncos got two picks for him in return. Again,
you know, sky Moore was a second round pick by
the Chiefs and I believe they're going to get a
sixth for him. So it tells you the Broncos found
a a team that really needed a wide receiver and
they were the first to sort of fit the deal.

But you could tell something was up the last couple
of days.
Speaker 4 (02:59):
Uh.

George Peyton, the general manager, has had a lot of
phone time the last couple of days, so you knew
something was cooking. And I don't think teams are done
calling the Broncos. They have surpluses at running back, corner,
defensive line. Those are all positions. I mean, the Jets
traded for two defensive linemen alone, so uh, those are

all need positions around the league. So I've had another
GM tell me from another team he thinks the Broncos
will be a popular stop here in the next few days.

Just to follow up on that. You know, they just
traded a wide out last year in Jerry Judy, and
he only got a fifth and a sixth. Was that
partly because they knew that they had to pay him
a contract on top of the picks they were giving away.
Is that why the value was less than Vylea.
Speaker 6 (03:47):
Fley's value is so big because you have contract control
for on a rookie deal. Yeah, that gives you a
lot of flexibility. And he's a proven player. I mean, look,
he was. He just got caught in number. It doesn't
mean he's not a good player. It's like they'll probably
release a corner here who could be in among the

top three or four for a lot of other teams.
So it's just that's the level they're at right now.
And sure they would have liked to have kept Veley,
but he was not going to get a lot of
playing time, I don't think. And you got to remember
his career clock's a little different. He's twenty seven already,
he'll be thirty when his rookie contract runs out, So

for him not to get playing time, that's a lot
different for another second round player or another second year
player to sort of be waiting his turn.

He really can't afford to wait his turn.

He came into the league at twenty six, so he
was just older than a lot of other rookies.

Jeff, I'm sure that teams pay attention to other teams
rosters and you know what could potentially be released down
the road and so on, and the Broncos are doing
that with all the other teams. But do you think
the Broncos shocked him or do you think that they
got a call from Mickey Loomis to say, hey, is
this guy you know? We see you have a ton
of wideouts. How does that work.

Well in this case? You know, Mickey Loomis obviously knows
Sean Payton very well. I mean they work together for
sixteen years, So some of it is just you're familiar
with you know, every team has a pro personnel department
that tracks every roster in the league, So everybody has
a good idea who has surplus, you know, who might

be releasing players with proven Resumes's that's what teams are
on the hunt for players with proven resumes who might
be available, and the Saints have a tremendous need at
wide receiver.

They're very thin there.

Vele gives them, you know, a size potential with him,
you know, six'. Five they don't have a player like
that on the. Rosters so they had a tremendous need
and obviously a comfort level with with The broncos Given
Sean payton's, Here SO i think it's pretty easy for
that one to come.

WAS i was just wondering that BECAUSE i was looking
at The saints roster earlier and it felt like they
had Pretty you're right about the size, thing they don't have,
size but it felt like they had pretty talented. Guys
they had A lave And shaheed And Brandon. Cooks LIKE
i was wondering what the purpose was on their end

Velet, yeah you can't have you, know sort of one
size fits. All if if if you're gonna have small
guys across the you, know, sideline the, sideline that's gonna
be a little tougher for you to create, matchups you,
know on the on the edges of the, field, sideline red,
zone you, know back end, line in the in the end,
zone you gotta have some some bigger, guys and they

did not have that. Presence and you, know, again you,
know if you want a good trade and you're the
team trading the, player you find that you find the
teams with the biggest need for what you have is this.

Trade, sorry, mom it's just real. Quick this trade doesn't
happen Without Pat brian playing really well in the preseason
in training, camp right Or Troy.

FRANKLIN i, mean you've got two guys really making, jumps you,
know And Pat bryan has shown he's ready to, go
but there's no issue, there and That brian is kind Of.
Veley's you, know those are the Routes vley had last.
Year those were the situations he was. IN i Think
bryant's getting those snaps And franklin's gonna get more, snaps

And mims is gonna get more.

Go and it you, know they kept six receivers last
year when they went to fifty, three but only five
of them were active for the season, openers so you
know they could go just five at receiver when they
go to fifty three this, time if they think they're

guys through waivers to the practice.

KNOW i, MEAN i know that coaches this time of,
year they're probably, just you, know there's a lot of internal.
Discussion they're probably wringing their hands about who do we

wideouts And veley is, gone but you can use it

Today, well they always want you, know your fear this
time of year mowas just that you're going to let
somebody go who you know turns out to be really
good and you can't get, back and you, Know Sean
payton obviously tells the story of the guy who got
away for, him which Was Rob, ninkovich you, know turned

into a pretty good defensive player For Super bowl winners
In New, england and The saints let him go at
the fifty three cutdown Because peyton said they didn't have
a plan for so he's very intent on not having
things like that happen. Again and you know they've they
got some injury things where they're gonna have to make a.

Call you know It's Nate atkins is gonna be ready
by the time the season, starts or he's gonna be
ready then sooner than the four weeks you would have
to put him ON. Ir you, know those types of
decisions are what they're gonna have to. Decide, uh when
the roster goes to fifty, three that that's where those
roster spots come. In you, know the guy you're trying

to protect from waivers or the injured guy you think
is gonna be back sooner than if you put him
ON ir to open the.

is one of those players they want on the roster
but he had tightrope surgery on his ankle last. Week,

do you need the roster spot for a guy like
him who may not be ready for the opener but

maybe week two or week? Three and THEN i, think you,
know running, back they have a crowd the defensive, LINE
i think that may be a spot where they keep
an extra.

let one of those guys. Go, again if you're ANOTHER

a good, defense that's gonna be somebody you're gonna take
a long look at to real in.

veley is not just the fifth string guy on the
depth chart before being. Traded he's not just a seventh

round pick from last. Year he's also twenty seven years.
Old and you flipped that for a. Pick first of,
all you got a seventh rounder, back which cancels out
where you drafted. Him second of, all you got the
fourth round. Pick and i'd point over towards Sky, moore

a second round pick for The chiefs that they just
had to trade for a. Sixth that's the kind of
value you got in, return which is quite, frankly it's
like unheard.

Know WHEN i mentioned a, FIFTH i was, like, man
if you're being really optimistic about, it you maybe could
get a, fifth probably like a sixth For Devon. VALLEY
i know he net, something he's good enough to get,

again go back last, year you Traded Jerry, judy who
was a first round, pick for a fifth and a sixth.

traded a wide out last year in Jerry Judy, and

partly because they knew that they had to pay him
a contract on top of the picks they were giving away.
