Speaker 1 (00:01):
Frommotorweek dot neg It's the MotorWeek podcast with your host Wilson, Action,
excitement and some major plot twists both good and bad.
Mandalika gives us one of the most thrilling rounds of
the season. Hello and welcome to the MotorWeek post trase
show for around eighteen of the twenty twenty five MotoGP
(00:23):
World Championship the indonesiangp at the Mandalika International Street Circuit
on the scenic shores of Lombac, Indonesia. My name is Wilson,
I'm your host, and that was one of those rounds
where you had to go and sit in the dark
room afterwards to kind of come down from everything that
just happened. What a wild turn of events. One rider,
(00:47):
one guy, Marco Bitzeki plays such a pivotal role in
both races of the weekend, on one side in the
best way possible and then on the other in the
worst way possible. On Saturday, bez puts on an amazing
display of speed and perseverance from destroying the field and
(01:09):
qualifying to a comeback of epic proportions in the sprint,
culminating in a thrilling last slap battle them one day later,
he makes just as epic of a mistake that not
only ruins his weekend, but may just ruin the rest
of Mark Marquez's unbelievable championship season, adding an unexpected epilogue
(01:33):
to one of the biggest stories in modern Moto GP history. Now,
the end result on Sunday, with those big guns out
of the way, is that we were treated to an
absolute slugfest for second and third on the podium behind
one of the most dominant performances of the entire season.
And that came from a rider that most of us
(01:54):
weren't expecting to see it from. So had all of
that end? Oh yeah, by the way, pekobag nyaya, he
went back to being terrible again. We've got a lot
to talk about, a lot to dig into here, so
let's go. Before we get started, though, I would like
to take a brief moment to invite you over to
the website if you've never checked it out before. You

Speaker 2 (02:51):
All right, so let's do it.
Speaker 1 (02:52):
Let's talk about the indonesiangp and Saturday definitely set the
stage for the unexpected, because before we even got to
the sprint race, Dukati had already flipped the script, but
not in a good way, as we saw last week's
double winner, Peco bag Naya and our new champion Mark
(03:15):
Marquez both relegated to Q one, along with both VR
forty six riders. So every single GP twenty four point
nine six' eighty three in the field were IN q,
one And Alex marquez on A gp twenty four only
narrowly made it straight INTO q two. Himself the only
writer that was confidently IN q two was for me And,
(03:36):
aldigear and that was. Foreshadowing now two of Those ducati
Riders fabio di Jan antonio And Mark marquez made it
out OF q, one But peco was a major disappointment
all the way down in seventeen after that incredibly dominant
performance less than a week ago In. Japan totally, unbelievable
(04:00):
definitely not WHAT i was. Expecting, Now mark may have
made it, through but there wasn't much more in it
than that for him because he could only muster a
good enough time to land ninth on the grid on
his final RUNNING q. Two but While ducatti was struggling A,
prillia they were on, FIRE i, mean after thrashing the
field in. Practice Marco bitzeki set a track record in
(04:23):
qualifying with the first ever lap in the one twenty
eight At, mandalika laying down a blistering one twenty eight
point eight three to, two nearly four tenths of a
second ahead Of fermi And aldigarans, second the Only ducati
in the field that really showed any speed at all
throughout the entire day On. Saturday but that wasn't the
(04:43):
end of the, surprises Because aprillia also landed a very
unlikely front row starter In Raoul fernandez on a trackhouse.
Spike Alex rinz was fourth on A, yamaha and Then
Luca marini rounded out row two For, honda just behind
THE ktm Of Pedro. Acosta so all five manufacturers were
represented on the front two rows of the, grid and
(05:05):
of those, Five aprilia was the only one with multiple
riders on the front two, rows and far and away
the person leading the field Was. Bitzeki everybody after qualifying
and practice for that, matter was already saying That bez
was going to be invincible once the lights went. Out
but we do not work on assumptions around. Here we.
(05:29):
RACE i, mean after, all on the pre race, SHOW
i assumed That mark would dominate the weekend With peco
right behind, him AND i was already very very wrong
at that. Point so with everybody else assuming That bez
was going to be the rider to beat and nobody
was going to be able to touch, him what could
he do in the actual points races On saturday And. Sunday,
(05:49):
well let's start our discussion of the racing action with
the sprint, race which was the perfect example of why
we don't just make assumptions and we all run the.
Race what an absolute thriller of a sprint that was.
AWESOME i, mean even if it was only set up
(06:09):
Because Marco bitzeki spotted the field like five or six
places at the, start it was worth. It the overwhelming
Favorite bez was terrible off the, lights got beat into
the first corner so badly he was back around seventh or.
Eighth he then fought his way back to, fourth and
he was there for a lap after lap trying to
figure out a way to get By Luca marini before
(06:31):
he finally could make a play for the. Podium and
this was very reminiscent of what we saw out Of
Mark marquez a week ago In motegi in the, sprint
where he struggled to get by The honda Of joan
mir and it took him so long that he couldn't
make a realistic play for the. Front and it looked
Like bez was on that same. Track but let's hold
(06:54):
that thought for a minute and talk about some of
the other craziness that happened in the. Sprint Because Mark
marquez made an overly optimistic move On Alex rains early
on that netted him along lap penalty that booted him
out of the. Points Pedro acosta after a great start
once again wrecked out of a podium. Position at the
time he was just a few tents off the pace and,
(07:15):
second and Then motegi Double Winter peco Bag naya was
literally dead last in the running, order so bez was
frantically struggling to make up. Spots pedro A costa was
throwing away another, Podium Mark marquez out of the mix all,
together and once everything settled, down we had the very
unlikely rookie for me And aldegar looking fantastic at the front,
(07:38):
Upstart Raoul fernandez in, second and Then Marco pitzeki once
he finally had gotten By Luca marini was about two
and a half seconds off the lead in, third and
you then kind of take a step back and survey
of the. Situation you've got a rider at the front
who's on A, ducati so you know he's going to be.
Speaker 2 (07:58):
Fast he's a.
Speaker 1 (07:59):
Rookie who has never won anything at The MOTO gp level,
yet so he's gonna be super. Motivated and then you've
Got Raoul fernandez in front Of Marco, bitzeki another rider
that has never scored a.
Speaker 2 (08:13):
Podium at the MOTOR gp.
Speaker 1 (08:14):
Level he's riding a bike that theoretically could be just
as fast As bazeki's and he's super. Motivated and so
From bitzeki's, standpoint with five and a half laps left to,
go those two riders ahead of, You fernandez not that
far in, front BUT i mean out of gears two
and a half seconds out ahead of. You that is
(08:37):
a lot of ground to make up and not a
lot of. Time and Then marco just flips the switch
and takes it to another. Level he made the pass On,
fernandez and at that point he was still over two
seconds back as they crossed the line with five to.
Go and to put that into, perspective at that, distance
(08:58):
with that many laps, left just to Catch, aldegar let
alone pass, Him bez would have to outpace The grissini
rider by a full four tenths of a second every
single lap until the. End and not only did he do,
that he did. Better, Actually bez just started reeling out
one twenty nine after one twenty, nine and even After
(09:20):
aldeger laid down one twenty nine of his, own there
was still no slowing down The aprilia freight train that
was rapidly closing in on. Him on lap, Ten Marco
pitzeki made up nearly seven tenths of a second on
for me and Now deeger and that set up an
absolutely amazing final. Lap aldiger was up by three and
(09:41):
a half tents at the line to start the final,
lap But bitzeki's corner speed was, insane and by turn
ten he had erased the gap and finally made his,
move and he, thought what an incredible. COMEBACK i guess
this is. It bez is. Won but, no, no it
was not over yet Because aldier made a very clever
outside in play from turn eleven to turn twelve to
(10:03):
try to get the lead, back which was a very
veteran move on his. Part But, bez to his, credit
was just so strong he actually Beat Aldi gerra on
the outside of turn twelve that got him the preferred.
Line and then those final few corners Where marco had
been so good all weekend, long carrying speed through those,
(10:24):
corners there was nothing that out Of garret could do
at that. Point an absolutely amazing, COMEBACK i, mean But
techi looked relieved after he crossed the line with the checker,
flag and, HONESTLY i think he should have felt, relieved,
because let's face it with a good. Launch this is
an easy wing going away For Marco. Pitzeki BUT i
(10:46):
would personally like to thank him for watching it at the,
beginning because it took what could have been a very
boring race and made it absolutely fantastic by, far in my,
opinion the most exciting sprint of the year now for
for me And. Aldeger, no he didn't win this, one
but that should not have been a disappointment for. Him
and remember we're not talking about what happened On, sunday
(11:09):
because you, know LIKE i, said had bez gotten a great,
Start aldiger was probably finishing second in the sprint, Anyway
but for me was not only the class of the
field For ducati in, general but he did a fantastic
job of trying to hold bez off at the, end
upping his, pace trying to fight back immediately after getting.
(11:30):
Passed but nobody was going to stop a charge Like
bitzeki was. Making it didn't matter if it was for
me And aldiger or any other. RIDER i don't think
anybody was gonna be able to Hold marco back in this,
Sprint so no blame. Here aldiger had one of his
best rides ever on A MOTO gp. Bike he just
ran into a buzzsaw at the. End it was a,
great great race for me And aldegaer and foreshadowing of
(11:53):
what we're going to see to finish off the. Weekend
and Then Raoul. FERNANDEZ i feel bad For raoul frnand
because here he has this incredible, race, right but there
is nobody challenging, him and so he had this very
lonely ride in third with very little camera, time and
so he didn't really get the proper amount of attention
(12:16):
that he deserved for his first ever. Podium but one
way or the, other this sprint was a very important
one For Raoul, fernandez his first podium of any sort
Of MOTO, gp LIKE i, said and for a writer
that looked on the verge of being out Of MOTO
gp completely or on his way out Of MOTO gp
Before trackhouse came in and took over that team and
then subsequently Hired David. Brivio it's a fantastic, moment a,
(12:40):
great great redemption story for him and a testament not
only to the work That aprilia have, done but What
brivio brings not just To trackhouse but to any. Organization
he's involved, with especially when dealing with talent that has unrealized,
potential AND i Think Raoul fernandez is the definition of
unrealized potential at The MOTO gp. LEVEL i, mean we
(13:04):
saw What brivio was able to do With, suzuki With
Joa meir And Alex frinz and what they've done since
parting ways With david De, brivio and SO i don't
think it's a coincidence That fernandez gets on a podium
Once brivio takes over the team and works with him
for the majority of the.
Speaker 2 (13:19):
YEAR i think it's the same type of.
Speaker 1 (13:20):
Accomplishment and, so LIKE i, said it's a testament to
the work Of prile is, done to the work that
Track house is, doing and to that combination Of david
De brivio really Inspiring Raoul fernandez to work harder and
get better at a point in His MOTO gp career
where it would be really easy to give up or
just falling it in because he's been around for four
(13:41):
years now and hasn't really done anything, significant and you
can kind of reside yourself to the fact that you're
never going to do anything significant unless you have that
mentor that comes along and, says, HEY i believe in,
you and if you work hard the WAY i tell
you to work, hard you're going to see. Results and
that's exactly what happened in the, sprint and it carried
through to the entire. Weekend it was a, great great
(14:02):
sprint For Raoul, fernandez a writer THAT i have criticized
in the past for looking like he might not be
trying very hard and assuming That MODO gp would just
kind of do what he. Wanted when he first came.
Up there was a little bit of controversy when he
arrived on the scene and he had a pretty big.
Ego it seems like he's gotten over that and has, realized, hey,
MAN i have to work as hard as everybody, else
(14:24):
or even harder than everybody else to be able to
make up that. Gap and we saw that on Display
saturday in the sprint and really across the entire weekend
because he was awesome and qualifying as. Well and then
we'll talk About sunday here in a. Minute all, Right
so that was your. Podium other WRITERS i want to
talk about want to start With Alex marquez because after
a really lackluster effort in qualifying By Alex marquez, Standards
(14:47):
he was then able to fight his way up to
fourth in the running. Order not huge in terms of
his previous sprint results this, season where we kind of
expect him to be second every single, time but it
was big in terms of the championship because after losing
points in Both motegi races To peko Bag, Nyaya alex
(15:07):
was able to grab an immediate six points back to
kick things off In, mandalika and based on the way
The peko rode On, saturday there were likely to be
more points to be had For alex On sunday as.
Well juemir did exactly WHAT i was hoping that he
would do in this. Sprint coming off that Excellent JAPANESE,
(15:29):
gp he And honda both went right back to it
In indonesia and showed similar. Speed mir finished fifth in the.
Sprint his Teammate Luca marini finished one spot and less
than a second behind him in sixth at the, line
even Though marini eventually got hit with a tire pressure
penalty after the race that dropped him down the, thirteenth
but that penalty is largely irrelevant in my, opinion because
(15:52):
both of the Factory hondas did what they needed to
do once, again showing us top six speed for the
second round in a row and making me think that
maybe they have discovered something that's propelled them to step,
forward and SO i was looking very forward to what
they were going to do On. Sunday more on that later.
Now Mark marquez started ninth in this. One he got
(16:15):
that long lap penalty after roughing Up Alex. Rinz it
was a little borderline for, me But i'm generally okay with.
It he was able to fight his way back into
the points in, seventh not that he needed, points but oddly,
enough by finishing seventh and scoring three measly points in this,
sprint those were actually enough to clinch the team championship
(16:37):
For Factory, dukati along with the triple crown For ducati in,
general which is so ironic that they were so overwhelmingly
dominant this, season Especially, mark and then The lenovo team
takes the title in his sprint, race Where mark was
nearly ten seconds back in seventh And Peco bagnaya was
dead last in the running. Order mean talk about ending
(17:02):
a championship with a whimper as opposed to a roar
that was the most anti climactic you just won the
whole thing moment in a long, TIME i think In MOTO.
Gp moving, On Miguel olivera was the Top. Yamaha he finished,
tenth just outside the, points and you know after both
he And Fabio quachrararo made it directly INTO q. TWO
(17:23):
i see this along With Alex rins for that, MATTER
i see this as a major, disappointment especially considering that
their main Rival honda was able to double down on
that Strong japanese round by Opening indonesia looking just as
good as they were a week. Ago so that was
not a good race for me For. Yamaha and speaking
of not having a good.
Speaker 2 (17:45):
Race, Oh peco, Dude Peco. BAGNYAYA i mean.
Speaker 1 (17:52):
He was not only dead last in the running, order
But Peco bagnaya was twenty nine point three to nine
seconds off the pace in a thirteen lap. Race that
means he was over two seconds slower per lap Than Marco.
Bitzeki that will be, Like i'm out there trying to
race with these.
Speaker 2 (18:13):
GUYS i, mean, yeah he.
Speaker 1 (18:15):
Did finish, fourteenth for whatever that's, worth but that's only
only because five riders wrecked out in.
Speaker 2 (18:21):
Front of, Him.
Speaker 1 (18:22):
Peco was thirteen point one six seven seconds not behind the.
Leader he was thirteen point one seconds behind the.
Speaker 2 (18:31):
Rider in front of.
Speaker 1 (18:31):
Him he was over thirteen seconds Behind Alex, rinz who
finished thirteenth in the. Race and the only Reason alex
was that slow was Because Mark marquez ran him off
the track at one. Point that's absolutely crazy how slow he.
WAS i have no clue how that, happened AND i
would love to hear What peco.
Speaker 2 (18:51):
Had to say about it after the.
Speaker 1 (18:53):
Weekend And i'll tell, you as excited AS i was
to See honda be able to maintain the pace that
they established THE, MOTAGGI i was doubly disappointed to See
bagnyaya fail so miserably at the same. Task you, KNOW i,
obviously with my, picks thought that maybe he And dukati
had legitimately hit on something last, weekend ALTHOUGH i did
(19:14):
say coming in this round would be really the confirmation
of whether it was a step back towards greatness For
bagnyaya or just kind of an. Anomaly BUT i didn't
think it was an. Anomaly. No saturday made it look
way more like the, latter and that was only the
beginning For Peco bagnaya in This INDONESIAN. Gp so to
wrap up the, Sprint bitzeki stages and epic, comeback giving
(19:36):
us a thriller of a, finish and that made me
wonder would a better start On sunday lead to A
prelia domination or could someone challenge him and Could mark
find a way to inject himself back into the podium. Battle,
well there answers to all of those, questions and the
answers were nothing LIKE i was. Expecting we'll talk about
(19:58):
The MOTIVE gp race, seconds all, Right so let's finish
our discussion of this Weekend's INDONESIAN gp by talking about
the main, Event Sunday's MOTO gp. Race and, wow what
do you?
Speaker 2 (20:17):
Say what a start to this?
Speaker 1 (20:20):
Race another port jump off the lights For Marco pitzeki
and then halfway halfway through his first lap he forces
the issue trying to make up spots by getting by
Mart marquez hits The champs rear. Wheel they both go
creaming into the gravel trap at high speed and turn.
Seven it was a very scary, wreck and not just
(20:43):
because of the speed and the violent tumbles that both riders,
sustained but also because it looked Like mark's foot may
have gotten clipped By bess's rear. Wheel turns out the
tumbling was the bigger, deal at least when it came
To Mark, marquez who came up holding his shoulder in
which was a very concerning, Moment and in the end
he's fractured a collar. Boone we'll talk about that more
(21:03):
in just a couple of. Minutes but, this this is
what happens when you make mistakes early in a race
or early in a. Weekend this was the example of
both of those things coming together in the worst possible,
way because if bez hadn't made an early mistake in this,
race a bad, start then he would not have felt
(21:23):
the pressure to try to make a risky move to
make some of those spots back up right. Away and
If mark had made a mistake early in the weekend and,
qualifying putting himself ninth instead of landing on the front
road like he normally, does, well then he's not back
there in the pac to begin with to have a
run in With Marco. Bitzeki so mistakes beget, mistakes and
(21:47):
this is a great example of what happens. There but
we did learn the, KEY i think to Making MOTO
gp races both unpredictable and. Exciting at the, front you
just take the two best rip out of the field
and let the rest of the guys fight it, out
knowing that there is something sizable on the. Line because
(22:07):
with the odds on Favorite bitzechi And Champ marquez out
of the, mix that meant two. Things, One Peco bagnaya
had a much better chance of actually scoring some, points
and two the race for the win and for the
podium was now wide. Open, okay who AM i? Kidding
peco wasn't going to score any points one way or the.
(22:29):
Other but the other part's. True that early incident absolutely
set the stage for drama at the front because in
the wake of that incident With bitzeki And, marquez you
look up at the front of the field and you
Saw Pedro, Acosta Luca marini and for me And aldegar
leading the way ahead Of Alex, Rinz Raoul fernandez And
(22:49):
Fabio quatruro in the top. Six if you had that
on Your bengo, card you need to go buy a
lottery ticket, tonight because you are luckier than me and
any of those riders winning it have been a big,
story and it was impossible to predict which of those
riders was going to be the one that could actually
pull it, off and those were already looking to be
(23:10):
our main podium contenders in the absence of a Dominating
ducati or a Dominating, bittechi but they weren't the only
ones that eventually got into the.
Speaker 2 (23:17):
Mix.
Speaker 1 (23:18):
Here the main, attraction, though was Definitely acosta Versus, aldigar
because out in, front you've got the rider dubbed the
Next Mark marquez last year when he arrived on the,
scene going up against the upstart rookie who made it
very clear early on this year that he not only
wants to Dethrone costa as the rider of the, future
(23:38):
but supplant him in that. Role and their clash came
pretty early between lap seven and lap Bait aldigar sees
the lead heading into turn, Ten acosta tried to give
it right back to, him and that led to for
me And aldigear putting his head, down gritting his, teeth
and becoming the second Youngest MOTO gp winner ever after of,
(24:01):
Course Mark. Marquez but by saying it that, Way i'm
kind of trivializing what actually happened. Here because after making
that pass On, nacosta for me And aldigaar was on
an absolutely sizzling, pace something that we have never seen
before out of him in his Brief MOTO gp. Career
he put nearly a second a lap on HIS ktm
(24:23):
rival for the next three consecutive. Laps and that wasn't.
It he just kept right on, going building a lead
so insurmountable that the main challenge simply became for him
to manage that lead all the.
Speaker 2 (24:36):
Way until the.
Speaker 1 (24:37):
End and what we were left with was a situation,
where you, know as dominant as everybody Thought Marco bateeki would,
be that's exactly how dominant for me And aldiger. Was,
instead this was by, far especially what happened On saturday
in the, Sprint this was the young rookie announcing his
(24:58):
official arrival on on the scene In MOTO. Gp he
went from scrapping back and forth with a, costa a
fact that you might think That acosta would, win having
more experience and better overall, credentials but, Instead, no for
mean absolutely hammered the. Field this was by far his
best performance in his Short MOTO gp career and one
(25:21):
of the best overall performances by any rider this. Season
he won by a staggering seven, seconds and the only
reason that he won by seven and not more is
simply because he stopped pushing like five or six laps
from the end when he had about a nine second,
lead and then he coasted across the line after he
(25:41):
came out of the final. Turn, otherwise had he ridden
the same way he was for the majority of the,
race this was easily a ten plus second. Win absolutely phenomenal.
Stuff and now Both grissini riders have won a race this.
Season now that was the story of the, race AND
i didn't see the, vote BUT I i would assume
that for me And aldigair was the rider of the.
(26:02):
Race if, not he should have. Been but that wasn't
even the tip of the iceberg when it came to
the action and the excitement in This MOTO gp, race
because While aldeger was clearing off at the, front little
did he know that there was a massive battle for
the rest of the podium that played out behind. Him
(26:23):
it was completely wild and incredibly fun and in my,
opinion some of the best overall racing that we've seen this.
Season so in second we Have Pedro acosta on THAT
ktm with more power and more straight line. Speed behind,
Him Luca marini won it second and was carrying better
corner speed on His. Honda meanwhile behind them you Have
(26:44):
Raoul fernandez trying to make something big happen again writing
that Same aprelia That bez had been so dominant with
On friday And. Saturday but some great scrapping Between acosta
And marini ended up bringing the rest of the field
up to those. Guys so When fernandez got in The,
marine he fighting for. Third then the door swung wide
open for of all, People Alex rinz on His yamaha
(27:09):
to jump into the final podium spot With Alex marquez
tagging along for. Fun it was absolutely wild. Stuff in one,
lap in a couple of, Corners marine went from second to,
eighth and we were just getting started because Then rins
makes a move On acosta with less than nine laps to,
go takes over second and does an amazing job breaking
(27:30):
so late in the term one to hold off any
kind of response From acosta and then desperately held on
for dear life on That. YAMAHA i mean he had
the back end in the air on. Breaking he was
doing everything he possibly could to not let bikes that
were technically superior get by, him and he held them
off for quite a, while but Then Alex marquez stepped
(27:53):
up and got into the fracas as, well putting all
of The alexes on the. Podium he then started his
try towards. Second Ducati alex got By Yamaha, alex at
which Point Yamaha alex did his best impression Of Luca
marini from a couple of laps before drifting from second
all the way down to. Sixth, Somehow Brad binder showed
up on the scene looking for a podium, position even
(28:15):
Though acosta had kind of built enough of a gap
over his teammate that wasn't gonna. Happen but one way
or the, other there were so many riders involved in
this fight to get one of those final two podium.
Speaker 2 (28:26):
Spots it was.
Speaker 1 (28:27):
Crazy and then when it looked like all of the
chaos had gotten sorted out with about four laps to, go,
no they still weren't. Done after getting bounced from the
podium Completely, Pedro acosta gets this late second, wind maybe
because he was on the medium ortire where the riders
around him weren't ends up passing Every alex he can
find on the, track and now he ends up in
(28:49):
second at the, line and you know when it comes
To Pedro acosta in this, race this was a loss
technically on track for, him right he finished, second and
it was also a loss in the sense of getting
just absolutely clabbered by his main rival in the young
rider ranks in the young young.
Speaker 2 (29:09):
Category.
Speaker 1 (29:10):
Right but in the, end this was still a fantastic
race for him and a fantastic learning experience for. Him he,
led he got bounced from the, lead he got booted
from the podium spots, entirely and he didn't give. Up
he fought back to the best position he had a
realistic shot of in the end beating out the second
or third best rider in the sport right, now depending
(29:31):
on your opinion Of Alex. Marquez in the, process and
After sunday stumbles In San marino And, motegi leading into this,
Round pedro one hundred percent re established his speed At.
Mandalika he was, aggressive he was, Fast he turned into
gritty performance AND i think this finished for him and FOR,
ktm especially considering that they Landed Brad bender. Fourth his
(29:53):
best race of the. Year by the, way and he
did so from an amazing fifteenth on the. GRID i
would say it was a fantastic day from the FACTORY ktm.
Squad they should hold their head high and be proud
of what they. Accomplished now For Alex, marquez he took
a somewhat surprising although not that surprising and giving his
speed this, season third in This MOTOR gp, race AND
(30:15):
i want to tell you why it was an important
weekend for, him even though it wasn't a very flashy.
One alex started, seventh he was not a contender in the,
sprint but somehow fought his way the. Fourth then he
comes back On sunday again was not a contender for
the win in this, race at least not in the first.
Half then he suddenly found, something started making, moves works
(30:37):
his way through that melee of super motivated riders to
get to the head of the trailing pack in second
and even Though acosta ended up passing him back into closing,
LAPS i really liked this race for him for similar
reasons THAT i liked the race For. Acosta the amount
of drive and motivation that he. SHOULD i, Mean alex
this year has been so used to just kind of
(30:59):
cruising around a few seconds behind his brother in second.
Place that you don't always know when push comes to
shove whether he can throw down and fight with these
guys when the real points are on the, line or
when important points are on the. Line but that's what
he did in this, race and he did that in
the sprint. Too you, know these are the weekends you
need when you're trying to do something. Big in the rider's,
(31:20):
standings he wasn't, dominant he wasn't a second place, Rider
but to finish fourth in the sprint and third To
MOTO gp maybe not too, flashy but on a weekend
where Pecobag nyaya was completely non, existent these are the
kind of efforts and the points that come with those
efforts that make a, big big difference whether or not
you're taking home first place trophies or second place trophies
(31:43):
for that matter.
Speaker 2 (31:44):
Too so it was a great.
Speaker 1 (31:45):
Race for, him AND i think a great effort in the,
championship which we'll talk about here in a couple of
minutes sor, Right so that rounds out the. Podium some
other RIDERS i want to discuss from This MOTO gp.
RACE i already mentioned that fantastic fifteenth fourth effort from Brad.
Bender you, know he's done that so many times in
his career that we shouldn't be that surprised by, It
(32:07):
AND i Suppose i'm not really, surprised but every time
he does, it it's so. Impressive now trying desperately to
pass Brad bender at the end of this race was
The honda Of Luca, marini who was legitimately in podium
contention in this. Race now he got treated rudely at one,
point dropped back to, eighth LIKE i mentioned a few moments,
ago but he battled his way back through the field
(32:29):
in the final, lapse getting all the way up to,
fifth and this performance capped an excellent weekend For. Honda
Now Joan mere unfortunately wrecked, early so we don't know
what he would have done had he stayed in the.
Race But, marini Like marini typically, does is steady and.
Reliable and the great news For honda is that steady
(32:49):
and reliable was a fifth place. Bike and just like On,
SATURDAY i think That honda accomplished exactly WHAT i was
looking for from them in This MOTOR gp, race simply
reinforcing the potential speed that we saw At, motegi And
marini continues to look really solid in the. Process he's
(33:10):
finished eighth or better in four of his last FIVE
MotoGP races now the fifth was a retirement last weekend In.
Motegi and in the last ten races where he's made
it all the way to the, end he's scored points
in none of, them and he should have scored points
in ten of. Them it's just that he had that
aforementioned tire pressure penalty in the sprint that bounced him
out of the. Points but he crossed the line in
(33:32):
points positions in the last ten races where he's made
it to the, end and almost all of those have
been an eighth place finish or. Better so he's getting,
Better marini, is And, honda more, importantly is getting. Better
AND i think That marini getting better is a function
of That honda getting. BETTER i, mean we've talked about
this many times. Before marini is so good at extracting
(33:55):
the actual performance out of the, bike and so if
he's getting better and, better that Means honda is giving
him a better and better product to work.
Speaker 2 (34:03):
With.
Speaker 1 (34:03):
Now Raoul fernandez was the best A prilia rider in
the absence Of Marco bozeki and his epic. Error, surprisingly
this sixth place result in this race By Raoul fernandez
was not the best finish of His MOTOR gp. Career
he's finished fifth a couple of, times including earlier this
year In, bruno just a couple of rounds. Back BUT
i would say this was the best overall weekend of
(34:27):
his career in the premier, class starting on the front,
row scoring the podium in the, sprint and then a
top five after battling so fiercely for a podium On
sunday with all of those other. Riders fantastic effort for
him all the way, around and Track house should be
thrilled with the performance for getting out Of Raoul.
Speaker 2 (34:45):
Fernandez right, Now.
Speaker 1 (34:47):
Fabio quachraro was the Top yamaha After Alex rinz burned
brighton second then faded quickly down to. Tenth you, know
If honda hadn't looked so, GOOD i would say That
yamaha had a pretty good. WEEK i, mean both factory
riders in the top. Ten but then you look at
the level That honda was at both in the sprint
and in the MODE gp, race and you Realize yamaha
(35:10):
is still lagging behind, overall AND i don't know what
the thought process is in not rolling out THAT v
four engine because they're allowed to they. CAN i, mean
maybe it's not A suspec. Yet maybe they know that
they would get beat. Badly maybe they know that it's
a Pecobag naya level engine right now in terms of.
Performance but if it's, not if it's better than, that
(35:33):
THEN i would give it To fabio And rims and
just let them have at, it, man because what are
they giving up by not finishing seventh and tenth or
eighth and, Tenth you, KNOW i just don't see what
they're losing out on by giving them the, Engine and
maybe they drop a couple of spots because they're not
in the mix for the top six anyway right, now
(35:55):
And honda is and So. YAMAHA i have to try
to do something to start the process of making up that.
Gap and speaking Of Peco bagnaya, speed.
Speaker 2 (36:05):
All, right let's talk About peco.
Speaker 1 (36:07):
BRIEFLY i don't want to believeror the point, Here i'm,
baffled and reading his post weekend, comments he's baffled, too
and that's not good me being. Baffled that makes, SENSE
i don't know What i'm talking. About he shouldn't be,
baffled And dukati shouldn't be. BAFFLED i mean a week
Ago peko Bag nyaya had his best round of the
(36:27):
season In. Motegi then a few days later we come
To mandalika and he has what is easily his worst
overall round in, years AND i think it's probably his
Worst MOTO gp performance. EVER i, mean seventeenth and qualifying
nearly thirty seconds off the pace in the. Sprint and
(36:51):
before he wrecked out in This MOTO gp, race he was.
Nowhere he got like destroyed by everybody off the. Lights
he was trailing some Cat chantra by a lot when
he ultimately wrecked. Out And i'm very eager to find
out If ducati Or peko or somebody can find out
what on earth was happening and how they could have
(37:12):
such a dramatic difference in performance From motegi To. MANDALIKA i,
mean those tracks are not that. Different they both start
with the LETTER.
Speaker 2 (37:24):
M you should have.
Speaker 1 (37:26):
Been better, here speaking of Subcot, chatra that's the point
that we're at now With. PECO i can't do anything
but bank stupid. Jokes speaking of Subcout, chantra he scored
points the last three rounds in a, row and its
thirteenth place finish in this race actually doubled his points
on the. Season it's not going to make a difference
in what happens next. Year he's out Of MOTOR, gp
(37:47):
but he is going to go To World, superbike WHICH
i think is a great move for. Him but it's
good to see him having some measure of success in
building at least some momentum heading into the off season
and his new series down the, road and who, knows
maybe this will encourage him to get a little bit
better results and get closer to the top ten before
the end of the. YEAR i, mean then we got
to talk About Mark. Marquez we found out immediately after
(38:10):
the race That mark fortunately doesn't have a broken, shoulder
WHICH i think would have kept him out a long,
time but he has a BROKEN i, believe right. Collarbone
now we'll wait to see what happens in a couple
of weeks.
Speaker 2 (38:23):
Time In, australia the.
Speaker 1 (38:25):
Good news here is, that you, know a collarbone injury
for A MotoGP rider is kind of run of the.
MILL i, mean they typically can recover pretty quickly from.
Those the better news here is that the championship was already,
decided so that mistake By bitzeki isn't going to Ruin mark's.
Championship but If I'm, dukati then and Maybe i'm not Du,
(38:46):
Katti i'm just gonna Warn. Dukatti if and only If
mark feels good and is medically, cleared then maybe maybe
you let him race At Phillip island to track The
it is very fast where you can have a really
high speed. Rack but if he feels even the slightest
(39:07):
bit of, discomfort To, god don't take the. Risk you've
got to shut him down from a, round maybe two.
Rounds there is nothing to gain. Here you've won. Everything
you won The Rider, championship you won The Team, championship
you won The Constructor. Championship there is no reason to
Risk Mark marquez coming back too soon if he is not.
(39:28):
Ready if everybody agrees and everybody feels, comfortable then. Okay
but don't make a mistake. Here Remember honda from years,
ago don't make that. Mistake don't risk you're number one
rider for the off season and next. Year the last
thing you want to have happened to him is have
him get a major injury instead of a minor injury
(39:49):
when you've got a rider, that despite his, age absolutely
positively could compete for another championship next. Year but don't
take my advice on. That don't take advice from a
guy who doesn't know what he's Talking. Abo look at,
history look at What honda did in the, past and
learn from their. Mistakes, okay just be cautious With. Mark all,
Right so let's wrap up the entire weekend by talking
(40:11):
about both podiums On. Saturday in the, sprint third place
went To Raoul, fernandez a breakthrough performance for him and
for Track. House you, know at the beginning of the,
YEAR i would have definitely guessed that Io gura would
have been the first rider to get a podium For
trackhouse this season as opposed To. Fernandez so, great great
job By, raoul second with the Fer me And aldegaer
and excellent, performance although it was one that didn't even
(40:34):
begin to hint of his potential For. Sunday and then
your winner in the, Sprint Marco, pitzeki a fantastic comeback
that set the stage for a wild weekend of. Racing
we move on To sunday and The MOTO gp. Race
Alex marquez finished, third a gritty performance that is really
big for him in the, championship which we'll discuss here
(40:55):
in a. Moment second with The Pedro acosta and even
grittier perform THAT i think he'll learn a lot. From
and then your winner for me and Al deegar a
breakthrough race that sets him on the path to potentially
be the Big MOTO gp star of the, future and
it definitely sets up a massive rivalry Between aldegare And
(41:18):
Pedro acosta That i'm looking very very forward to in
the coming. Years All, Right so now let's talk about
The MOTO Gp championship. Picture Mar marquez was already the
champ coming out Of, motegi which is a really good
thing seeing as he's now injured and may or may
not miss a. Race below, him, though you've Got Alex
marquez fighting for points this, weekend combined With Peco bagnyaya
(41:40):
being a wall for the entire, round that Leaves alex
up by a sizeable eighty eight points Over peco Bag
nyaya for second overall in the. Championship we've got four races,
remaining so it's not decided for. Sure alex already does
Have peco cover a little over two of those four
(42:02):
rounds in terms of point. Total you think it's like
two point three four rounds lead that he. Has Little,
marquez in my, opinion is going to finish second. Overall
there is no question in my, mind especially the way
That peco is racing right. Now it's just a matter
of When alex is going to clinch that second place
in The Rider. Championship and that's really difficult to estimate
(42:25):
because of how Inconsistent bagnalia is going to be in
any given. Round he could go out there and win
both races or finish thirty seconds behind it score zero.
Points so that makes it tough to figure out exactly.
When Although i'm going to give it a try, here
the magic number For Alex marquez After Philip island is
one hundred and, eleven and right now he's up by eighty.
(42:46):
EIGHT i think that gap is a little bit too
much to Guarantee alex is going to, cover SO i
think That sipang is the round for. HIM i think
After Sepang alex is going to wrap up second overall
in the. Championship Now Alex marquez has already won The
Independent Rider championship after his performance On, sunday that is
no surprise now for third overall in the. Standings the
(43:11):
saving grace For Peco bagnaya right now is That Marco
pitzeki had even bigger Problems sunday Than peco, did and
So peco Leaves indonesia with a twenty point lead Over
bez for. Third AND i am almost certain That pitzeki
is going to get a long lap penalty For australia
(43:31):
if it hasn't already been announced by the time you
hear this, show and so that is going to give
The ducate rider a leg up at least for one
more round to protect third in the, standings even THOUGH
i think it is only a matter of time Before
bez catches, him erases that twenty point lead and ultimately
passes him and finishes third himself in the. Championship And
poteki now also Has Pedro acosta to worry about as,
(43:54):
Well so after a Strong sunday From acosta he moves
up to fifth. Overall he's only thirty nine point to
drift Of, Marco so motivation is there for everybody from
second down to fifth to perform in the closing stage
of the, season because those spots are still up for.
Grabs we're not just talking about riders Like bez And,
(44:14):
acosta but also for you, Know Marco, bitzeki For Alex,
marquez and for six Place Franco, morbidelli who is only
himself eight points Behind, acosta And i'm sure he would
love to end the season top five in the. Championships
so there are a lot of battles Below Mark marquez
to watch over the next four. Races and If marquees
(44:37):
is either sidelined for a rounder two or is not
up to one for a round or, two that really
opens the door for those guys to make a, difference
to make podium, runs compete for, wins and that could
really mix things up and make things exciting over the
final four races of the. Season so with that being,
said what is my take On. Indonesia, well it was.
(44:59):
Awesome it was one of my favorite rounds of the entire.
Year it was, Exciting there was a lot of on track,
action it was. Chaotic we had that dramatic last slap
pass for the win in the. Sprint we had an
unexpected wreck at the beginning of The MOTO gp race
that changed the entire dynamic of what we were watching
(45:20):
on track and a variety of Non dukati riders in
an intense battle not just for the podium, spots but
potentially for the. Win and in the, end, yes A
ducati did, win but we got a breakthrough performance by
a young rider that has a, bright bright future ahead of,
him and he finished one spot ahead of another rider
(45:41):
that has a, bright bright future ahead of. Him it
was fun from start to finish AND i hope that
that level of excitement carries over Into australia and the
rest of the. Season SO i thought it was. Phenomenal
what did you think of this? Round, well you can tell.
Me all you have to do was head To facebook
Or reddit and leave your comments. There next, up, well
(46:03):
we have a couple of weeks wait until we get
to our next doubleheader that starts In. Australia before, Then
i'm going to try to get a show out talking
about some of the other news stories that are happening right.
Now but in the, meantime since we have a lot
more racing left to go and a lot more pre
and post race shows left to, GO i don't want
you to miss a single one of. Those so if
you haven't done it, YET i would highly recommend you
