Speaker 4 (01:45):
I'm doing fine. I can't complain at this moment. I
just I had a spraying ankle, and I just I
didn't even know I had a spraying ankle. And what's
crazy is that I ain't gonna be able to play
drums until it heals. Doctors or there's no drums for real. Yeah, huh,

(02:19):
that's messing with a lot of stuff. Man, I know,
but God is able, that's all I gotta say.

Speaker 3 (02:27):
Man, Yes he is, Yes he is, Yes he is.
He is truly able. Yeah, thank God for Bishop being understanding.
And do you have a person that you really can
depend on? That's a good question. No, do you need

(02:56):
me to come and take a flight over there? Bro a.

Speaker 4 (03:01):
Hey, if you if you if you want to go,
go for what you know?

Speaker 5 (03:05):
Man, my brother say if you want to go with
for what you what you know? Uh, basically send me
the songs.

Speaker 3 (03:19):
And the service is starting at one time, bro eleven
eleven okay, okay, and you have you have you have
two services?

Speaker 4 (03:31):
Right, I'll be missing out. No, I just I just
have one service, okay, but cool, but usually there is
there is somebody that does come in for me though.

Speaker 3 (03:47):
Okay, that's cool, and I'm just messing with you. Just
give me a hard time, bro.

Speaker 4 (03:52):
Man, Hey, we're we're brothers. I guess that's that's how
it's supposed to go, right exactly.

Speaker 3 (03:58):
That's what I'm saying is if you need somebody, if
you need me to come over there, just to uh
step in, I'll be right there.

Speaker 4 (04:07):
Yeah, they're not just that they're not ready for you. Man,
that you don't think so, you don't think so they're
not ready. All right, Okay, all right, I got there.
Not alright.

Speaker 3 (04:20):
I'm rather I do stuff I do.

Speaker 4 (04:22):
My musical presentation, you know, has evolved since I've connected
with the right musicians.

Speaker 3 (04:32):
That's good. That is really good. So every so every
musical piece at church.

Speaker 4 (04:41):
Uh, sometimes I play as the record, but then again
it's it's all right to go outside of.

Speaker 3 (04:50):
Your comfort zone. That's that's really good. That's really good.
That's really that's really good. So one one thing I'm
getting we getting ready to get at it right now.
Be shunning at light on this particular person. You know,
that particular person is really known for that.

Speaker 4 (05:11):
I must say, you know, uh, he's a class act
of his own, no further introduction. I mean, you want
to dive intoward how you want.

Speaker 3 (05:25):
To go, Let's go, let's go, let's go. What you
what you got to say about the young man. I
love him dearly. I watch him almost every day. I would, uh,
that's going on for Mike Brell. Uh he's uh md

(05:47):
out of this world. He's loan everywhere.

Speaker 4 (05:55):
Yeah, and everybody loves him.

Speaker 3 (05:59):
Yes, sir, sir.

Speaker 4 (06:02):
One thing I could truly bro I could truly say
about Mike Burrell is even though he's no stranger to
music in general, but he's really a chameleon.

Speaker 3 (06:20):
Like he knows he knows.

Speaker 4 (06:24):
How to play his part without either having to go
overboard or go under it's just right there in the middle.

Speaker 3 (06:37):
Sure, you're right, you're right, right.

Speaker 4 (06:48):
Right. What blew my mind was Mike Barrell played bass.
That what what I was like. I ran, I ran
a couple of laughs because this dude can play bass.
I thought he was just a keyboard player orion player.
But this dude plays bass. Have you heard him play

(07:08):
bass before? Yes, yes, sir, Yes, sir. He's no joke,
makes you want to play, makes you want to hop
on the set when he hops on bass.

Speaker 3 (07:25):
And you know what, what what I like about Mike
Burrell he got a swag that that's out of this world.
He could dress like crazy man.

Speaker 4 (07:40):
Now now that now that's that, like he's a he's
a man of the scholar in his own riot.

Speaker 3 (07:49):
Yes, I yes, I yes, I yes. I he could
sing yeah, I'm noticing that. Haven't you noticed that too? Listen?

Speaker 4 (07:59):
I thought he just play instruments. But what literally blew
me away was when uh I follow him on Instagram
and during the during the pandemic, he would he had recorded,
he did a rehearsal and he was singing my life,
my life is in your hands and his uh, his

(08:25):
composition on that piece, even though Kurt Franklin, God's Property
did that song, but the way Mike Barrell did it, I.

Speaker 3 (08:35):
Was like, where's the rest of it at?

Speaker 4 (08:38):
Uh?

Speaker 3 (08:38):
Huh?

Speaker 4 (08:40):
See Mike Barrell be teasing us folks with this kind
of stuff. You see, it's called ghost notes.

Speaker 3 (08:48):
Man. He puts those ghost notes in there that uh,
you know, not expecting. I'm like, okay, what's next, Mike?
He makes it fit. I'm like wow, wow wow, and
and and and and the way he coordinates himself with this, Uh,

(09:12):
this band is ridiculous. Anytime he plays with the band,
any band that he's he's with.

Speaker 4 (09:20):
Uh.

Speaker 3 (09:21):
The far as the praise team band, the choir band.
He's just he's right there. You know, it's like ridiculous.
I noticed him when when he was out here at
the Stellar Awards, you know, you know gm W a

(09:45):
stellarwards one time when he was at Second Baptist and
that's when I was like, I need to people follow
this young man. He's ridiculous. Wow, he's ridiculous. I'm like, man, Mike,

(10:05):
come on, what's next?

Speaker 4 (10:06):
Bro? His contribution to music in general is you know,
he's pretty much setting a trend. He said, he's set
in a trend for the upcoming newer generation.

Speaker 3 (10:24):
You know, yes, uh yes, sir, it's sir.

Speaker 4 (10:27):
Just like how David Blakely set a new trend for
the upcoming generation after him. That's what Mike Burrell is doing.

Speaker 3 (10:38):
You're right. I watched his NORD session. Matter of fact,
I was watching this NORD session last yesterday with North
Session twenty five, Mike Barrell with Bennett Pether. We're gonna
talk about him next week. But it's ridiculous. It's like

(11:04):
out of this world. It's you know, you know, it's like.

Speaker 4 (11:11):
Anytime they did Mike Burrell have been in together.

Speaker 3 (11:16):
Uh huh.

Speaker 4 (11:17):
It's going to be a musical problem every time. It's
going to be a good musical problem every single time
with them to get together. H you're right.

Speaker 3 (11:39):
I have I heard him play live? Yes, I was.
I was actually literally here and they was doing that
Nord session in uh Anaheim and I was able to
catch it live when they was doing it live.

Speaker 4 (11:58):
Oh wow, there was life changing for you. Make you
want to say, can I play? You're having those moments?

Speaker 3 (12:11):
I know I do. I ain't gonna why, Yeah, you're right,
You're right, you're right now. Well playing with FM two,
Oh my goodness, both of them there, It's like it's like, Mike,

(12:32):
can't you just calm down just a little bit for us?
He's like, no, I got some more. I got some
more for you guys. Bro, I got some more for
you guys. I'm just like listening and got my my
eyes on the video because you know, because he can
everything that you've done, right, Yeah, yeah, so all that.

Speaker 4 (13:00):
You're go ahead, go ahead, bro, you you first. Now
I'm saying I'm listening. Uh So, what makes Mike Mike
is he studies his craft. Right, You always tell us
that to study your craft, he even says and sewod

(13:24):
Timothy two in fifteen to study to show thyself approved.
And that's it, back with me. What Mike is doing.
He's studying and he's still studying to show himself approved.
Matter of fact, he really doesn't have to show us

(13:46):
that he's approved.

Speaker 3 (13:47):
He's already approved. M I know he got uh West Coast,
uh West La. You know, own and popping all the time,
you know.

Speaker 4 (14:03):
Right they they love them out there, you know, yeah,
and the MIDI.

Speaker 3 (14:16):
You're right yeah, So, uh, Mike, we love you, bro.
You know, Mike, I just can't have a I just
can't wait to have another set. I mean, I just
can't wait to have a set with you or just
shake hands with you or take a picture with you. Broke,

(14:37):
you know, because you've been just that person and you
are making uh footprints in this this world that uh
we love. So keep on doing your business, bro. And
so now we're going to uh top ten on tonight. Bro.
So God, I got some excellent top ten some tonight,

(15:03):
and I'm gonna start with another number number ten, Bishop
Bishop Walter Hawkins. What is this? Have you heard that song?
My brother? You heard that song? Bop?

Speaker 4 (15:16):
I heard it. I know it's way before my time.
But it's it's a staple, it's a classic. The the
elderly people love that song, especially in the Baptist community.
What is this that they go in on that one?

Speaker 3 (15:35):
Yes, yes, you're right about that. Shout out to my
shore David Blakeley on that because I know he was
on that one. He's on anything that was Walter Howkins done.
David was on it.

Speaker 4 (15:47):
Man. We can't forget it about Uncle David Blakey, Joel
s Kevin Bond, you know those who else are we
missing and part that was part of that band.

Speaker 3 (16:04):
Yeah, that's basically who I'm. I'm I'm that's basically that's
all you you made them. That's all we need to know.

Speaker 4 (16:14):
Like that, and the reason being because without without Blake Lee,
Smith and Bond, I seen personally, gospel music wouldn't like
the sound of the choir as far as the band
is concerned, it wouldn't be what it is today if

(16:36):
it wasn't for Joel Smith, David Blakelee, and Kevin Bond.
You know, wood shedding, wood shedding material. M hm. That
that we as musicians to twenty first century musicians, you know,
just enjoy.

Speaker 3 (16:59):
So yeah, yeah, you're right number nine. Uh, check this out,
my brother. I'm coming out with the choirs. But okay,
ring on with the choirs. We love choirs. Yes, I
got the H Mason Mass Choir.

Speaker 4 (17:19):
You heard that song Chard Christ Yes, h Mason uh
Mass Choir.

Speaker 3 (17:27):
Uh you heard that song purified.

Speaker 4 (17:31):
Purified?

Speaker 3 (17:32):
Yes? Oh my goodness. David is on that main keys
and he is rocking that keys and I'm like, okay, David, David, David.
I'm like, come on, David.

Speaker 6 (17:51):
I'm like, oh my goodness, Oh my goodness. Steve is
back there. You know what I'm talking about. He's on
the main he's on the I think he's on the
uh B three.

Speaker 3 (18:03):
Steve is on yeah, Steve on the B three on
this one, and I think it's uh Stephen Junior is
on the drums on that uh on this on that one.
When they was when they recorded that one, I'm like,
it was it's who wow. And every time I see

(18:27):
David around here, I'm like, David, can you play that
song for me?

Speaker 4 (18:32):
He probably laughed at you, like come on now.

Speaker 3 (18:37):
I was like, David, can you play that song for it?
And he's like he looks at me and he's like, Okay,
I'm gonna see what I can do. And because it's
like the song, you know, it's has it's you know,
it's not just a regular song. It's a song to where.

Speaker 7 (18:57):
All of the the uh the parts of the choir, soprano, altos, tenors,
space has a part in a section and they all
sing in their own section.

Speaker 3 (19:16):
And it's making the song Richard. Yes, I'm actually I'm acting.
Everybody that's listening to this this this live on today,
please go listen to that song on YouTube or either
go purchase the song from uh the Church of got

(19:41):
in prize albums. It's called c H Mass Choir Purified.
Listen to it and purchase it. It's gonna be u
uh uh song that you would never get. You will
love that song the next one. I'm the eight choir master,

(20:08):
choir master Ricky Dillon in New g Or.

Speaker 4 (20:12):
Now now where now we're in Chicago, Okay, all right,
all the.

Speaker 3 (20:16):
Way in Chicago. We went to Chicago. Yes, talking about Chicago.
The song is called when I think, oh my, that
song it just like I was telling you last week, Uh,

(20:38):
it just goes all the way through my veins because
you just think about where Jesus and our Lord to
figure brought you from you know, right, you came from

(20:59):
a long way, you know, like say for instance, and
you know you know you're thanking God for just just
you know, just coming, you know, like safe. For instance,
I had back surgeries. I had only I was only

(21:21):
supposed to have one back surgeries, but I ended up
with two, and then the second one. The doctor was
gonna sit there and say, the doctor sit there, say
you was I was faking it? How was I faking it?
I could sit there and show you pictures that I
wasn't faking it. I couldn't walk, and I lost all

(21:44):
my limbs. I lost everything. But if but wasn't for
our Lord, and saying Jesus Christ that no man, you
know what I'm saying, I'm like in tears right now.
If it wasn't for him, if it wasn't for his blood,

(22:05):
that ship on that cross right now, when I wasn't
be here because I coded so many times, I was
not supposed to be here. Let's put it like that.
I was not supposed to be here. I was dead,
they put they put too much of that medicine in me,
that I wasn't. I wasn't I wasn't coming back. Let's

(22:28):
put it like this, mm hmm. I was not supposed
to be here. So that's why that song was caught
me because I thank God that I'm still here. I'm
still able to do what I'm doing. I'm still able to,

(22:50):
uh play those drums like I'm supposed to. Yeah, you
know were you know sometimes it made, you know, like
a click or whatever. But I'm still able to, uh,
you know, play that bass drum. You know, you know,

(23:11):
otherwise I lost all my lower extrebuitis everything. Wow, this
young lady, I'm gonna try to have her on our
show pretty soon. She's number seven. I'm ann Nick Johnson.
You heard her.

Speaker 4 (23:31):
Where where she resigns?

Speaker 3 (23:33):
Where she hauls from. I think she's from the East
coast too, but I don't know what city. But she's uh,
she's an organist player, and and you're talking about an
organist player that's very in tune to God. She could

(23:54):
play anything, and it's it's like, wow, she could sing
it while she's playing it. She's another train of tree.
Let's put it like that. You understand you heard trena
tren before. Yeah, she's another tree of tree, but unique.

Speaker 4 (24:22):
Huh another powerhouse.

Speaker 3 (24:25):
Another powerhouse, another powerhouse. But this young lady and she's
she's uh, she's matter of fact right now. If you
look her up right now, she's doing something for the youth,
and and anything for the youth, I'm for it, you know,
So look her, look her up. Drumminique Johnson. She plays

(24:47):
this song, perfect piece, and then it's an organ solo.
And then you're talking about organ solo. It's ridiculous. It's like,
my goodness, and she plays some keys like this like
it's her last time. Let's put it like that. I

(25:10):
need you to listen to this. Look, listen to that
song perfle Dominate Johnson. She's from Chicago.

Speaker 4 (25:17):
Yeah, shout out to Chicago.

Speaker 3 (25:22):
Chicago, y'all, y'all doing some things now, Chicago. Yeah, you
understand what I'm saying. Yeah, we're her.

Speaker 4 (25:30):
Our friends were on Facebook and she is on or
you understand what I'm saying, yup.

Speaker 3 (25:40):
Yeah, she's ridiculous. It's like I'm like, wow, I'm gonna
get because uh, she was supposed to been on the
show when I first started it, but I guess God
seem fit to wait for her to come on Positive
Power twenty one and I'm thankful for that, you know.

(26:00):
So when when the time comes, we're gonna interview her, bro.

Speaker 4 (26:07):
And when you're ready, I'm ready, man. That is That's
what it's all about, talking to That's what I'm talking about.

Speaker 3 (26:14):
When it comes, we're gonna interview. So I'm gonna be
thankful for that when when it comes. That song is
called perfect piece, Perfect piece and number six.

Speaker 4 (26:31):
Brent Jones, Brent Jones, Okay, come through, Brent Jones.

Speaker 3 (26:37):
Brett Jones. He started in Los Angeles, but he's everywhere now.
He's he plays I he's like doing choirs, uh seminars
everywhere now, so you never know where my brother Ben
Droones is at right now. He's a phenomenal phenomenal artists.

(27:04):
I love him to death. He's ridiculous. He did a
show out he had a show out here like doing
the same thing that we're doing like right now. But
he did it for k c P. I don't know
if he's still doing it, but he did. He did
like the top ten for k c P, like their

(27:25):
gospel session. And Brent Jones ain't no joke, really not,
He's no no joke. He got Stell awards everywhere. I
know everywhere and his nerve. He's known for his music

(27:46):
and his music. He don't play around with his music.
You know when I'm talking about he knows, he knows
what he's doing. That's what That's what I like about him.
He knows and he knows what he's doing. My last
one is Saint Louis Fellowship Choir. Anything that Saint Louis

(28:11):
Fellowship Choir does, I listen to it because they have
their their style and their the that'sic about choirs. I
just love it. It's just ridiculous, my goodness.

Speaker 4 (28:32):
And not only that, their musical influence is right next
door to them Chicago.

Speaker 3 (28:38):
Yeah, you're right, you're right. You're right, You're right. So
what you got, brother?

Speaker 4 (28:47):
What do I have for number four? We're going to Minneapolis, Minnesota, Okay.
Darnell Darnell Davis and the Remnant, Okay. And what I
can truly say about Darnell Davis in the in the Remnant.
Growing up in Minneapolis, in the Church of God in

(29:10):
Christ Umbrella and community, I was around Darnell Davis, uh
Billy Steele from Sounds of Blackness Wild. I grew up
with the singers that sings with these people, even James Grier.
We can't forget about James Grier. But also also our

(29:37):
feature Mike Burrell is going on Darnell Davis Records, a
couple of them. Wow. Yeah, So that that's why. That's
why I was like, you know what, Darnell Davis, No
he's making He's making some noise in Minneapolis, Okay. And

(30:02):
a lot of people, like a lot a lot of
people don't realize gospel music in Minneapolis is very rich,
but they don't get recognition like major like other major
cities get when it comes to like doing like gospel records,

(30:27):
you know. But I must say Darnelle Davis and the Remnant,
they they're pretty much doing some good stuff. I enjoy
listening to them every single time I get a chance.
I just like, yup Minneapolis that they're here.

Speaker 3 (30:47):
And so number three.

Speaker 4 (30:53):
Snarky Puppies, Yes, Okay, well what can I say?

Speaker 3 (31:01):
I mean, you know, snarky Puppy.

Speaker 4 (31:04):
It's just, you know, I just say it's a band
that's full of creative juices, you know, big shout outs
to Spot Seawright, Larnell Lewis, Mono, Neon v Keys. I mean,

(31:25):
it's just so it's like and oh, yeah, Corey Henry,
we cannot forget about Corey Henry. That that's part of
not snarky puppy Grammy Award, not forget about that's right. Yeah.
One thing I could truly say, a lot of a

(31:47):
lot of gospel musicians are you know that's playing the secular,
that's playing mainstream. Every bit of their training comes from church.

Speaker 3 (32:00):
Ask you right?

Speaker 4 (32:01):
So that that's the breeding ground for a majority of
the African American musicians in the States and overseas is church.
That's that's the breeding ground. That's that's our boot camp.

(32:22):
I remember growing up when I started playing, I was
the youngest out of four or five drummers at my church. So,
and look where you're at now, man, Thanks be to God.

Speaker 3 (32:37):
I'll just say God's good.

Speaker 4 (32:41):
And I'm just Philip. That's all, nothing big, nothing small.
I'm just Philip.

Speaker 3 (32:45):
That's all I can say. Yeah, I gotta I got
an opportunity to uh shake mon Oniel's hand. You know
when when I went to Now I'm twenty nineteen, that
was the experience of a lifetime. I was like, what
when I seen him with that? Uh? When I seen
him with that, uh, that yellow hood yard right. I

(33:10):
was like, and he had the yellow glasses and everything.
I was like, wow, and he had the green I
think I had. He had his name on his uh hoodie.
I was like, is this really you? For real? I've
been following you for years? And he was like a
national and a normal person. Yes, that's this is me.

(33:33):
How you doing? Yeah?

Speaker 4 (33:37):
Wow, that's crazy now Larnell he's from Canada, right, uh
huh okay, all right, all right, shout out to Canada,
because Canadian musicians that they're they're no joke either, you
never they're they're they're are forced not to be reckoned with.

Speaker 3 (34:04):
And we like it and we love it.

Speaker 4 (34:08):
You know. My my favorite song from Larnell I think
is It's changed your Mind. He did it with the
xilgan Uh the Zojian Concerts series and but sputs band
ghost No was the's the band that accompanied all the

(34:30):
drummers that were Jojian artists.

Speaker 3 (34:35):
I was there. I've seen no no excuse me, I
wasn't there, but I've seen it live, man, I've seen
it live and it was ridiculous. They went around Nell.
They was like, uh, they they've pasted Latnell on this.
He couldn't even get off the drums. Just put it
like that, Wow, it couldn't even get off the drums

(34:59):
because it was like so appreciated on that situation when
I when you, when you see you, when you see it,
you got to see it. It's it's it's uh in
a situation to where.

Speaker 4 (35:16):
When they say longd lois.

Speaker 3 (35:18):
And it was like clapping. Everybody's clapping and they wondering, Okay,
what's next the music comes up, It's.

Speaker 4 (35:27):
Like it's like who we yep. Anytime anytime you hear
live horns, uh huh, and it's game over anytime you
hear it. When when the horns bring in the band
bring in as far as that intro, the first four.

Speaker 3 (35:47):
Or five bars, it's game.

Speaker 4 (35:49):
Over, right, there's there's no no need for no explanation.
You're no, no, it's game over with them horns, them
live horns go in for real.

Speaker 3 (36:03):
Oh yeah, it's game over. Yeah, you're right. So what
do I runt? You got number two and number one?

Speaker 4 (36:13):
So so number two and number one, well I like
to mention it together. Well, we're gonna do it number
two because we're going to Chicago again. Okay, Chicago man
is this week. Yeah, so Chicago, let's say, let's talk

(36:34):
about jazz. Okay, So, mister Ramsey Lewis, the late Ramsey Lewis,
may you rent some peace? Grammy Award winning jazz pianists,
Ramsey Lewis trio.

Speaker 3 (36:52):
What can I say? His music?

Speaker 4 (36:56):
You know, like his contribution to jazz as is very authentic,
Like every time anytime you hear him play like the
piano or he does like a phrase on a piano,
you know, Ramsey Lewis created that. Like it's one of

(37:22):
those sounds that you can't never forget.

Speaker 3 (37:26):
The straight.

Speaker 4 (37:28):
And his trio back then, the Ramsey Lewis trio that
was that was a force not to be reckoned with
as well too when it came to jazz.

Speaker 3 (37:41):
And one thing I can.

Speaker 4 (37:43):
Say about Ramsey Lewis, he's not also just a traditional
jazz player, but he also a smooth jazz player as well.

Speaker 3 (37:53):
Wow.

Speaker 4 (37:55):
Yeah, mat matter of fact, the number one spot I'm
about to this this particular group of musicians. Ramsey Lewis
has found this group and it's called the Urban Knights. Okay,

(38:17):
So so Urban Knights, this is gonna blow your socks off.
You're ready for it. Yes, sir, all right, I'm gonna mention.
So I'm gonna mention musicians' names, and you're gonna be floored. Okay. Uh,
Maurice Fitzgerald, Oh my goodness, Sarray Reid, Oh my god,

(38:42):
Donald Hayes, Kevin Randolph, Calvin Rogers.

Speaker 3 (38:53):
Yes, up.

Speaker 4 (38:56):
That that those were the guys the newer like the
newer sound of Urban Knights. This is the group that
Ramsey Lewis founded. Now let's take it. Now, let's take

(39:16):
a step back forth. Let's take a step back. Omar
Hakim Okay and Sonny Emory they were part of Urban Knights,
and this is Ramsey Lewis group that he founded along

(39:39):
with that band.

Speaker 3 (39:41):
That is great. That is great. That is great. Yeah, great.
So that's what this makes it.

Speaker 4 (39:55):
Huh that's what makes it. That's right, You're right, that's
what makes it. That's what makes it.

Speaker 3 (40:03):

an awesome show on tonight, bron who I like the
way we intellect I like the way we intellected, Bro.
